Review Royal Garden Chinese Restaurant - Auckland Central

Very friendly owners of a Chinese restaurant with a good selection of meat, seafood and vegetable dishes. Never full but you may have to wait a bit when it is dinner time. Recommend to try the braised pork, deep fried tofu and roasted duck. Does takeaways and phone orders.

Classic setting, the hosts are characters 😃, really great food , big serves : a small bbq or a black bean fish could do 2 people if you got some rice as a side: needless to say we made food babies 😂😂😂, heaps of parking , good service 🖒 . Maybe with some of the dishes (e.g. whole fish ) an indication of price an size? But that's a pretty minor setback . Now that I know a whole fish is gonna be a kilo of blue cod , I'm getting that next time

Really tasty Peking duck. The chef came out to speak to us and he seemed very friendly. The surroundings don't look flash but it was an enjoyable experience nonetheless.

Been eating here for years, good family style restaurant, however with their not professionally trained staff please don't be surprised if your order got missing.

My family always go here - the food is great and the staff friendly. We have been going for years and we never have any problems.

Good food, good service for a Chinese restaurant even if she's the only person in front of house and quite a steady flow of customers and orders.

I have been going here since I was very young, and I love this place. though the prices are comparatively high, the food is much finer and in itself, already much more expensive than most Chinese restaurants. The lady isn't being rude, she simply doesn't tend to smile or laugh a lot. The barbeque pork is amazing, though not cheap, it is amazing. Their meat and fried rice, Fried noodles and quality is wonderful. Always a pleasure to be reminded of the good food in Hong Kong.

sweet chinese. classic setting , lazy Susan's for the big groups , slow to get help (not much front of house staff), but friendly staff and helpful , but once we had ordered very fast . big serves: a small bbq and rice could serve 2 . the fish and black bean was very tasty . if your not impatient it's worth the wait .

Terrible. Was expecting bad service but great food based on these reviews, which I would have been fine with. But the food was awful. Everything just tastes of salt. Everyone at our table agreed, bland dishes loaded with salt. Spring rolls were oily and dark (they don't refresh the oil). We felt sick after the meal. Hopefully not food poisoning. And to top it off, very overpriced. $200 for 5 people for very sub standard, borderline inedible food.

We had duck 2 ways and salted fish eggplant.
Service was slow but friendly.
The Pekking duck was Yum, the duck skin was nice and crisp. The highlight however was the stirfry duck. We didn't eat it with lettuce and put it on rice instead.
Restaurant looked clean.

We made the takeaway tonight. I have to admitted the flavour of their food are better than most of Chinese takeaway. But the portion of food is so small. We made a 28 bucks BBQ pork, but there were only around 15 pieces of little meats. Most of Chinese takeaway you could have more than 1k of BBQ meats.

Starting with the bad stuff. Average service and bland inside. Food was more than ok with large portions. I continue to struggle to find a good Hong Kong style Chinese restaurant in Auckland though. Need to keep looking!!!!

Very expensive for some reason. Food was nice however all of our tables dishes arrived at different times even 15minutes apart. Soft drinks served were flat.

The people running this especially the lady are very rude.. I ordered takeaway and took it home, realising they forgot a dish so had to drive all the way back. no apology from them at all. Her attitude made me loose my appetite. Lack of customer service and I will not come back here. If I could I would give them a zero rating.

Went here when we first arrived in the country. 11 years on, still go there whenever we can. Have tried MANY Chinese restaurants over the years. By far and away the best Chinese restaurant in the North Island. Great food, great service and good sign is that Chinese people eat there too. Would highly recommend to anyone wanting good quality food.

We were recommended this chinese restaurant by a friend and have been to this place 3 times now. On our third visit on Saturday 03 May 2014 which happended to be my wife's birthday , would be our last visit, because of the lack of service. The food is nice that is why we went back. But they need to do something about their service. Only a husband and wife team and 1 kitchen hand.No one greets you when you walk in as they are too busy - same issue on the 3 times we have been there. You get your food after 1 hour, the lady owner is very unfriendly. We orderd entree and only to be told that they did not have enough BBQ chicken wings to cater for our 2 plates that we ordered when we enquired where the second plate was. Our food came out one at a time with breaks and not all at once, we had to ask them twice to get us some steamed rice to go with the food, some of the other guests were getting up to help themselves with chinese tea and had to come to the front counter to get service. They need to employ another waiting staff so that they are not running around doing everything on their own like headless chooks... not going back ever again.. as we think we will be going back to our chinese resataurant in Avondale who are way better in everything that these guys lack - Wing Wah Chinese restaurant in Avondale try it out - nice food good service friendly people..sorry Royal Garden but you need to lift your game. • • •

This has to be the best Chinese Food (takeaway) that I have bought in my 20 years in New Zealand.
The quality of the dishes is very appealing, in that the vegies are freshly chopped (not frozen packet stuff), and the meat/chicken cuts are good; not fatty or grissely.
The pricing seems to be the market average.
Only thing missing from the takeaway menu is seafood. I don't understand why that is?

Freakin awesome - every time. Every restaurant has its quirky things but if you don't take yourself too seriously, you'll see this place has the best darn chanese foo anywhere on the shore!

Chilli and garlic salt and pepper prawns, lemon honey chicken and sweet and sour pork are my favs. I go there every time I have a colonoscopy and it really hits the spot.

I believe this is the best Chinese restaurant on the North Shore. The ingredients are tops....no corners cut here. The food is delicious. Our faves are Chilli Chicken, Salt and Pepper Squid, any of their prawn dishes (these are amazing prawns...not from Asia). The chicken entree in lettuce cups, likewise, is wonderful. The only downer we have found in more than 10 years is the satay stirfry dish, either beef or lamb. Can't remember. Their Peking Duck is fantastic...needs to be ordered ahead. Best shared by 6 people as an entree.

All the usuals; sweet and sour, lemon chicken etc, are hugely nicer than we have had elsewhere. No gristle ...very good meat. Their seafood dishes also are great. The seafood is very fresh indeed.

We really like spicy food and they take us at our word. Chilli chicken etc, is spiced to suit us very well indeed.

The restaurant and bathrooms are unbelievably clean.

Yes, the female owner is not overly friendly. But as you get to know her she becomes more friendly. Plus she is very busy.

The food, cooked by her husband, is outstanding in my opinion.

Royal Garden is a family favourite which we have been going to for years. Although it is priced at the upper end of Chinese cuisine, one must bear in mind that they allow B.Y.O,use superior quality ingredients to other cheaper Asian restaurants and you do not have to order one plate per person, so the larger the group the cheaper per head it becomes. We do not go there for the service, having said that we have a nice rapport with the husband and wife owners and find them to be efficient and friendly, depending how busy they are. I would recommend royal garden, if you want very good Chinese food.

Cold restaurant with no atmosphere, an especially grumpy lady/owner? Leftover meals to take home were scraped into containers in front of us. Very unprofessional. I would expect a lot more for the prices they charged.

This is our family's favourite Chinese Restaurant. We have been going for about 6 years now. I have not found any chinese restaurant to be better. The customers are mostly chinese which is a good sign. The service can be a little slow when the restaurant is packed as it is very popular. We drive from Orewa and the food is devine. Funnily enough we were there when the other reveiwer was there and remember the incident with the duck, so when I saw this review I thought I would put my experience in to give a more balanced view. These people came across as arrogant and put the owners back up and we laughed about it afterwards with her. We have never had a problem and when our daughter needed to have a gluten free diet she went over her menu very carefully with us so we could order dishes suited to our childs dietary restrictions.

This is a restaurant has made its presence over the last 11 years as one of the best chinese restaurants in Milford.

However, my last visit to this place was unfortunately marred by a very rude waitress (who is also the owner) who clearly began to hate her job. As well as ignoring us through the meal, she also kicked up a fuss about the underdone duck that was brought out of the kitchen. She told us that cooking the duck further would be "no good" and we would have to pay for it anyway. After almost 10 minutes of her saying that the fact that we did not like the dish was "cultural" and that she would also accept a dish she is not happy with in a European restaurant; something akin to "shut up and eat".

The roast duck, admittedly, was quite enjoyable after it was properly cooked (with much of a reluctance on the waitresses part).

The seafood and vegetable chilly stir fry contained sparse sea creatures, 90% celery and was very bland.

When it came to paying the bill, they very rudely and clearly made remarks to each other in Cantonese. I did not think that it was appropriate to speak a foreign language in front of unsatisfied customers.

Obviously over the years, this place has been good enough to last this long. However, given the reluctance of wait staff to serve you in a timely fashion, their argumentativeness and a sizable deterioration of food quality, I don't think that they will stand the test of time much longer.
