Review Malay Parlour - Auckland Central

Pretty little place, nice decor with friendly staff. I liked their take on Malaysian food, not authentic but nice fusion. I loved the beef n shrimp dumplings which came in a bowl with a little onion chilli sauce/gravy and fried shallots on top. Yum! The curly fries were good too. Was not a big fan of the pork belly dish though. Overall good experience. Lot of other interesting things to try next time..

Classy and comfortable little joint, with friendly service. Nice spin on classic dumplings - quite a step up. The laksa was delicious, with a very generous serving of tender chicken. Has a much more modern vibe and taste than your usual Malaysian offerings. The tofu dish was also very more-ish. Both side dishes offered great value, something I rarely experience. I’m sure I’ll be back!

Great food, fresh and light served with fresh salads and very reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend the vege laksa, which is packed full of veg, tofu and freshly grated cucumber. The tofu is fantastic as well, which is more like a salad as it comes mixed in with grated cucumber and a light sweet chilli sauce and some kind of nut or sesame seed, really delicious if you like light, fresh flavours and a mix of textures. Prices not too dissimilar from food halls but quality is far higher, great service as well. Would definitely recommend!

Awesome Pork Belly Lunch! So good I had to come back for more. Beautifully tender, falls to pieces, with salad, rice and one of those delicious grey brown Asian boiled eggs. Generous portion for only $10.

Amazing food! Totally recommend to try it, it has a nice cozy little dining area but take-away is also great. Good portions and affordable price. The lunch special is a really good deal!

This place maybe small but the food is fantastic and super consistent. The service is great and the food is awesome! I would highly recommend trying the beef kendar and a roti.

Disappointed with the food. Felt it was more Indian cuisine than Malay. Only couple items on the menu was Malaysian. Seating was also bit cramped. Overpriced for service, quantity and quality of food.

After discovering that this place has the same management as KK, I knew I had to come here.

Service: 7/10
I don’t know why but the worker that serviced us slightly struggled to understand me, but he was quite friendly, and gave us recommendations on portion sizes.
The wait time was relatively slow but there were only two people in the kitchen and a big family before us.

Food: 7/10
We ordered the pork belly rice, beef kandar rice, seafood laksa, satay chicken wrap and a roti partha.
My favourite was the pork belly; it was fatty, tender and had a sweet braised flavour; the salad was light and refreshing with a vinegar-based dressing.
The laksa didn’t really have the coconut flavour I desired.
The beef kandar was creamy but didn’t really amaze me.
The wrap is a tasty option for when you’re on the go and the roti had crispy, flakey layers.

Ambiance: 8/10
This place is a more modernised version of KK with a more chic layout. The contrasting colours of the furniture and pop music is trendy and attractive towards the younger generation.
The seating area is quite small so it’s better suited for small groups of diners.
The open kitchen allows you to see how your food is being made and also lets out delicious smells.

This little eatery is a great option for a quick, cheap meal in Ponsonby. I would recommend ordering a few sides or wraps when dining in groups as the portions aren’t big.

Overrated and not an actual Malay place. Serve dishes mainly for individuals, not suitable for sharing. The laksa I tried was not like what I tasted in other Malay places such as KK. The serve was too small while the price was expensive. Not adequate and I have to find another place for a second round food. The service was good though.

Great place for lunch such a reasonable price and very tasty. Lunch spécial for only $10 definitely a must try if you are around. Pork belly rice, Laksa, Chicken satay all good and service if great

Eat here regularly and will continue returning. Am a big fan of the roti wraps however, I ask them to make a special tofu peanut sauce version for me and they always happily oblige. Great staff and delicious food. Would highly recommend.

Came down to try this new Malay place half way down Ponsonby road where the old rubbish food truck was and has now driven away, Hey tried the special 10$ lunchtime beef satay slaw and is not bad and see pic.
A little bird told me that this place maybe a sub branch of KK Malay, enlighten us manager if yous are, i never been to KK so must try et one day eh.

Been here many times as my local and they are related to the famous KK at Epsom but this is more catered or fused with the western style offering like kumara chips and pumpkin salad but I usually go for the chicken laksa which is at the pricier end but they do have lunch specials which is cheaper and smaller portion , recommended if you live in the area or fancy some Malaysian fusion style food !

This is a nice place to go for early dinner. Its very casual with beautifully set up eating space.

Best to dine in with max 4 people if you coming in group.

Good portion...A decent amount of food selection in the menu. I would personally categories the flavour more 🤔 Asian-Fushion rather Authentic...Still equally delicious.

Friendly staff.

Worth coming here to try especially if it's your local. ☺

Visited this place on Sunday afternoon for lunch. The place look tidy and clean. The customer service was good. I ordered a vegetarian Laksa and my girlfriend ordered $10 or $11 lunch special chicken laksa (RRP $16.5). Maybe we missed something, but my girlfriend lunch special laksa is obviously much less than my full price one. We both thought the laksa were just okay, but the ingredients such as the vegetables were quite fresh.

Customer Service: 7/10

Food: 6/10

Atmosphere: 7/10

Date: October 2017

Best Malaysian in Auckland hands down! Would happily eat every day it’s the best!!
The mee goreng is amazing so is #1 on the menu, the roti canai and actually everything, total fave!
The One With A Nut Allergy...
Thank you for accommodating for my nut and peanut allergy :) it is an extra positive experience to visit a restaurant where those who serve you know the ingredients well and make an effort to re-wash the kitchen tools.

The best Pork & Shrimp Dumplings ever! I read the Takeaway Menu and it said 8 pieces, however I got 12! Perfect for a one person meal and incredibly tasty and still very hot when I got home (5mins walk away on a very cold night) Will be back!

Had dinner here on Friday. We popped in really early so we were the first ones in and got served very promptly. Food came out about 15 minutes after ordering. I got the chicken laksa and my partner had the beef kandar. The chicken laksa was generous with pieces of juicy boneless chicken. It got a little spicy towards the end because it was a big bowl of soup but I'm not great at spicy food even though I love it so some people will find this perfect. I enjoyed the chewy egg noodles and the juicy tofu curd. I tried a piece of the beef from the kandar and it was extremely chewy but I was told only a few pieces were like that and the rest was nice and soft. Overall a pleasant dining experience for what it is, service was very good.

Disappointed with Malay Parlour. I was excited at the prospect of a Malaysian place close to home, as there is a distinct lack of good Malaysian in ponsonby.

I tried three dishes. The kandar beef and satay chicken were served like a Malaysian Donburi. But the ratio of toppings to plain rice was way off. The kandar beef had 3 small pieces of dried out beef (not moist and falling apart) and a big hunk of fat. No strong flavour.

Similarly, the satay chicken was so extremely sweet as to be almost inedible. 3 big pieces of pineapple on the top - bizarre garnish.

However, the saving grace and the only reason for the rating being this high: the chicken laksa. It was rich and well flavoured, and so much chicken packed in it, you're almost making your money back on it. Well cooked too.

Overall, not a nice dining experience. The hospital waiting room chic is not improved by the odd assortment of plants. They were severely understaffed for an influx of take out orders. If I were ever to go back, it would only be for the laksa if I wasn't bothered going further than ponsonby. Avoid the other dishes.

Probably one of the best Asian takeaways on the Ponsonby strip! The beef kandar was sublime - juicey and tender with just the right amount of spices and chilli. It doesn't have a long list of choices but what they cook, they cook with pride and passion. You can dine in or simply take away. Service was good.

I totally screwed dinner tonight.

If you've ever been too heavy handed with the salt, you'll know there's no coming back from it. I cooked the first inedible meal of my life tonight. Not even my partner could muster sympathy to ease my bruised ego.

Luckily another cheap eat option has opened up not far from us.

Malay Parlour is situated where many eateries have failed before. I can't tell you how many openings I've seen squeezed between KFC and The Wok Express, lasting a few months, then sadly becoming another Auckland hospitality statistic. Malay Parlour do come with a strong backing though, sharing the same ownership as KK Malaysian Cuisine in Epsom.

This place is bound to make it on the next Metro best cheap eats list. The menu is narrow and focused. Generally a good sign of doing the simple things well.

The Beef Kandor was bangin' with flavour. Tender beef curry served on rice with a sweet and sour julienne salad to cut through the richness. The Pork Belly on rice and Asian greens, again, tender and moreish.

$15 per meal. You're not gonna tell your grand kids about it, but you are going to remember it's a place to catch punchy Asian flavour at stellar prices.

With so many eateries in Ponsonby, surprisingly there aren't a lot of Malaysian options. This new joint has filled the gap and is a quick takeaway option. We ordered a vege laksa with tofu. Slightly smaller portioned it was a great winter pick me up with plenty of flavour.

The service was pretty good and the staff were very accomodating. Although this wouldn't make for a group setting, it's convenient for a couple or a quick catch-up with a friend. Prices are reasonable ($15) and the menu has some good options. We will be back to try out the rest of the menu when we require another quick Malaysian bite.

Came here for takeaways tonight ordered a chicken curry wrap and satay beef on rice. Chicken wrap was very nice it had a nice crispy roti wrap instead of your normal pita wrap. nice flavours abit stingy on the chicken but great flavours. Beef satay was nice too except the meat was a bit on the chewy side but it had great blend of flavours complemented by a nice refreshing slaw. Beef was too mild for me as i prefer abit more chilly or spicy but it was great nonetheless. I also love that they use eco friendly plates which is a bonus. Awesome for takeaways i highly recommend this place if you want something different on ponsonby rd. Would definitely come here again. Friendly staff :) All the best for the future

Did an office shout from here today - food was amazing , fresh tasty , had a satay chicken, wrap was flakey and buttery, dumplings were juicy with a super tasty sauce , nothing was over hot in the chilli way - just a nice tingle and $80 feed four with left overs so super value .
A great addition to the ponsonby strip

I was walking by last night and thought I'd give it a try. We had the chicken curry wrap and satay chicken curry wrap. Bath came in a delicious roti with a bit of rice and salad inside. It was a bit of a malay take on a kebab and was really good. I'll be back to try out the rest of their menu.

Went today for the first time for a quick late lunch and yummmmm - very nice rendang (tender, great flavour and generous) with rice and a side salad ($15) and a very generous serving of quickly fried tofu (crispy outer and soft inner) with a sweet(ish) chilli sauce, cucumber and peanuts ($14). Great value and flavours and very fresh. Also friendly service.

The owner also owns the famous KK Malaysian in the Epsom area that is always packed (with a queue outside) the food is so good - and he has brought the great flavours and food to Ponsonby, albeit in a slightly more 'hip' environment. We ate in but they also do take away. We will be back - often I suspect! Their take away containers are also well designed and eco-friendly.
