Review Thai Tradition Restaurant - Auckland Central

We had an awesome dinner here. The place focused on single details. Napkins are folded beautifully. Glasses are placed on handmade coasters. Their menu has a variety of choices. I can not remember the total number of pages of their menu. We chose raw prawn which was tasty. Their squid tentacles salad was amazing with huge portions. Their hotpot was super nice with a lot of meat, seafood, and vegetables. The price is cheap, $36/ hot pot with 2 different flavors. Their service was excellent. They also have special dishes: whole snapper for $28.5. We are so happy with our choice. This is definitely our favorite Thai restaurant in South Auckland. Highly recommended.

Great place, awesome atmosphere, just so peaceful to dine in with friends and family. Enjoyed the friendly service and good food. Portions are good and there is plenty of parking outside. Would highly recommend this restaurant. Had the Pad Thai, Pad ped and Cashew Chicken, all of which was delicious, check out my photos. They also have plenty of space for larger groups.

If you want authentic Thai food that won't break the bank. Check out this place. Chef Don cooks up amazing Thai cuisine with a newly incorporated special Thai Street food menu.

Prawn dish - lamb dish & scallop dish All 3 meals were absolutely delicious. The dining room had great decor and the waiter was attentive. I highly recommend this place and will go back.

Family dinner made even memorable by delectable food and courteous, snappy service despite being understaffed—- kids unfamiliar with Thai cuisine were suddenly converted! Their larb and tom yum are not merely authentic but worth many repeat visits. Aroi krap!

Wow...absolutely delicious Food ...by far, the most Authentic, Traditional & Tastiest Thai food I have had in NZ. We had the Country Fish & Mussaman Beef Curry....amazing taste and very reasonably priced. The atmosphere is super and the Staff are very Warm and Welcoming. Will definitely be going back there soon. Thank you, Thai Tradition Restaurant, for the wonderful Thai Food Experience.

If you are looking an elite kind of a restaurant, then I highly recommend this restaurant. From atmosphere to food to service, this place is awesome! As the name suggests, the place offers you a traditional thai experience with top class service. The food tastes great and got quite a lot of options as well. There is ample parking space as well.

Visited Auckland Botanical Gardens and decided to fine dinner. Decided on Thai. Tried Thai Tradition Restaurant and was pleasantly surprised. Walked in and found it to be as if we were in Thailand. The found was amazing. Beautiful presentations. Pad Thai with chicken. Wait staff was friendly and dressed in traditional style. Loved it.

Good kai and well priced. Six of us ate there and did there 32 per head meal (min of four people) clean it up but couldn't have eaten much more.

Very nice place, good Curry and perfect Service. You can bring your own drink.

My "Duck Love" curry was delicious. Ate up every last drop and every last grain of rice. But don't get the idea that there wasn't enough. There was, but it was so scrumptious I couldn't resist eating it all.

Stopped in after a nice walk through the botanical gardens next door, with my date, and we were very pleased with the atmosphere, service and food. I recommend this restaurant. I will be dining or ordering from here more often.

Great place. Lovely ambience. Me and husband, we both love their pad Thai prawn and the country fish. Tom yum mild is excellent! We will keep visiting and probably order the same menu again!! Con, bit of a wait on the food and rice top ups. Cheers!

Friendly service. Quite a wait to come and take our order but the food arrived quickly. Everything tasted good. Husband had a reaction to something though. Could have been an allergy (he has nut allergies) that wasn’t listed on menu.

I wish I could give 0 but its not there. Really bad food and bad service. Never going there again. Wont even recommend to any one. Staff was not at all friendly overall bad experience.

Food was way below average, it was terrible to be very honest!!!! We went there at 9:20, wasn’t greeted, first thing the staff said was to finish before 10pm as they were closing.

As we sat down at our table, both the girls (staff) were looking at us while we were deciding, could hear them talk in their language, minutes later a group of guys came in (same nationality) looked like they were ready to go somewhere with the staff, probably why we got asked to finish before 10pm.

We ordered Prawn Satay (Entree), Spicy Girl and Drunken Chicken Fried Noodles with extra prawns, the girl instantly jumped in and said it’ll cost extra $5 in a very rude tone.

Food came after 20mins, never in my life had to eat that fast, couldn’t even take photos as both of the staff had eyes on us and time was ticking away. There was only 3 pieces of prawns in the Drunken Fried Noodles.

While we were eating, one of the staff started vacuuming and cleaning the tables, wonder how the hygienic certificate was an “A”!!!

Food came to a total of $51.60, we couldn’t have finish 80% cause we didn’t have enough time and it wasn’t worth it, when asked if we could do a spilt payment between two, the staff rolled her eyes, took the calculator that was next to her and slammed it on the desk and started calculating.

Felt sick after the food, upset stomach and chest pain unfriendly staff, poor service, dull ambience, below average food, extremely bad experience overall 👎🏽👎🏽👎🏽 0 star service!

We were still hungry as we didn’t even finish our food, so we went to McDonald’s and that was by far way better and cheaper than what we had at Thai Traditional!!!

Note to the staff and manager: Should have closed early if you have plans rather than treating customers as if we were a burden. Disgusting behaviour and attitude. Would openly love a refund!

Preferred rating is 4.5:
2 adults, 15 year old and 11 year old. Hubby and I had Prawn Pad Thai and Drunken Noodles - generous servings with plenty of prawns with flavour. Miss 15 had mild Tom Yum Soup - she loved it and ended up taking the rest home. Mr 11 had the sirloin salad - while it was nice enough the onions were in pretty large and raw, which isn’t the greatest. He didn’t expect the meat to be cold either. Overall service was a 4.5 and food a 4.5. We live down the road so see that the place is busy and not busy. Tonight was busy. We’ll be back again - definitely good value for money.

We went here for Mother’s Day Dinner, last minute booking.

We had ordered - chicken fried rice, green curry (instead we got red curry), spicy lamb and the hot sweet lady (chicken)

The chicken fried rice and the hot sweet lady was delicious but the spicy lamb had more onions than lamb which we didn’t enjoy and half of it was left uneaten. The red curry was ok had better elsewhere.

We asked one of the waitress what was the special coffee that was mentioned on the drinks menu and she didn’t know and asked other staff member even she didn’t know. Also half of the wine/port that was mentioned on the drinks menu thay didn’t have.

Very average thai restaurant.

Always found food to be good. Good portions for takeaway. Been to restaurant 2x. First time hardly anyone there and service fast. 2nd time there had been event In Botanic Gardens and they obviously didn't expect the numbers they had and it took awhile to get served. Best going there during the week when not busy. I like the place.

Got takeaways from here last night. I had 3 Buddies which had so much seafood, heaps of prawns, scallops and squid (which was chewy) but pleasantly surprised with how much I actually got! However the Naughty Chicken my partner got was so spicy he could hardly eat it, his had no chillies next to it on the menu where mine had one and his was waaay spicier than mine. The mixed entrees were nice with the standard spring roll, curry puff, money bag and prawn toast. But with only 4 pieces it was pretty small and average for the price. Not sure if we'd go here again, partner got Burger King after...

Came here after going to the night market at Totara Hospice.

As the staff were not anticipating larger than usual number of people dining this night, they were obviously caught off guard by the influx of customers. When we arrived at 8pm, the dining area was still half full of customers, while the empty tables had not been cleared yet. The cashier/waitress/mess woman and the waiter/cook? were clearly stretched beyond their limits. However, the woman didn't seem to have the urgency to move quicker, much to my disappointment.

Nonetheless, we stuck around and patiently waited for one of the smaller tables to be cleaned.

As we were really hungry, we downed the food quicker than our waiting time. Taste wise, the food was average. Price was okay, considering the portions and the complimentary unlimited rice that comes with every dish.

Thai tradition is a good midweek meal when your too tired to cook. We had one green curry and one mixed meat stirfry. The food is pipping hot and flavourful but not special or gourmet by any sense of the word. The price is quite high for the quantity and level of difficulty of the dishes. Drinks were also on the expensive side. Decor and ambience was good and the waitress attentive. Would recommend only as a quick takeaway if you are in the vicinity.
Worst ever thai i had in my life. Very dull food and nothing like Thai cuisine. Go tofu stir fry in peanut sauce "praram" and "veg stir fry with cashew nuts"

Blend food. Not spicy or hot at all like normal thai food have. No flavour... Very blend... Dont know what i was having in terms of taste. If i could give a negative score i would for this.

The food was beautiful! Very filling! The staff was really nice over the phone and nice when I walked in to pick up the food. The kids loved it aswell.

Horrible ,
Been to the restaurant a few times but it has continued to get progressively worse.
Tonight was simply nasty food and terrible service!

Won't return

Appalling service .no smile , no idea whatsoever in regards to wine list, we were still eating entree and main was delivered,
Had to try to get attention to order drinks !
Food wasn't much better, entree usual Thai fare, but mains more flavoursome at home.
You sorely need to improve in all areas Thai Tradition, shame we are locals, but won't be back.

We moved into the area and thought of trying this place for the first time.

We were the second couple there. We were sat down by this young waitress, no smile no welcome.

We ordered banquet for two, she told us it is ok to order it. Without explaining what the dishes are, she took and ordered the meal.

We were given whatever meal she wanted us to have. Green curry that we did not order, and seafood that my husband does not like or eat green curry. She does look like a college student. We kept waiting for the other two dishes to arrive which never did.

Lot more people came in and all were waiting for their food, she simply forgot us. She was the only one serving there for some time.

We had to ask for rice, when she came back I asked where was the other two dishes. Got that really angry look. She asked if we want icecream, it came with our orders. We also got charged for tea and coffee but that did not arrive either.

When I told her that we did not ask for or like like green curry she just grabbed the whole disk and left it at in the kitchen.

When we were leaving I asked why she took the meal away, after leaving it open in the sink for more than an hour, she packed it for me to bring it home.

I told her we do not eat food like that was left open for that long.

Asked for manager when she charged for for full price and would not say sorry, she said he is not there and challenged me to returned whenever I want to make a complaint.

I could really see that she just did not care about us or anyone there.

Will change my feedback when I receive an appology.

Food was good but the service was terrible. We were seated and we looked through the menu. Another couple came in 5-10 minutes after us. We were ready to order then the attendee walks directly past us to the other couple and takes their order? We try an wave her down after she was done with there order, She eventually comes back out and walks past us. At this point I'm not happy and ask excuse me can we order? Her facial expression like wait Im busy. The resturant only had 4 tables occupied so it was not a busy night at all. Dispointed as it was my first time there. I probably would not return.

Average meal. Nothing especially wrong but it was average unexciting Thai fare served by people who didn't understand our English very well and who were keen to get us out quickly because the kitchen was closing soon. We had two main, two entrees, 1 Barcardi and Coke, one warm Sigha beer and we were charged $76.00. Not really value for money.

Went out on a limb to try a new Thai restaurant. Got sexy little duck. Great value for money. I got mine takeaway but the restaurant looked nice a clean. Good atmosphere & nice staff. Meal was tasty, only little complaint is that there wasn't as much meat in the dish as my usual restaurant. Other than that great. Would go back again if I wanted to go somewhere local

Nice cosy and calm atmosphere. Great service and food came out rather quickly which was great :) we ordered the pad Thai which was delicious as well as the Tom yum which was also great! However the sweet and sour snapper was a disappointment. The sauce was rather runny and was not mild as we wanted.

My thai to go place because it's really close to me. The food is great. I love their curry puffs & tom yum soup. The atmosphere is really cosy the waiters are usually very nice, there take away time is very quick usually 15-20 minutes & they have 10% discount

Went to this thai restaurant tonight for the first time since we went and did a reveiw back in 2012 Where should i start, first of all the waitress sat us down with no friendly smile or welcome, had to call her back for our order ,only one waitress serving the resturant and seemed like a college student. We ordered two mains and they got one right one wrong 50% strike rate, but to be fair the food was very nice and spicey once we got what we orderd ,however did have to ask for more rice , Once we had eaten i went to pay the bill there was no friendly smile and "how was your meal did you enjoy" a Smile goes a long way with front line customer service instead u give the impression that we are a nuisances,
Food good PR skills poor if you want people to come back make them feel wanted ,see you in another two years when my wife convices me to try it again instead of going to our regular thai resteraunt at botany junction great food great service always accomodating.

We had a happy occasion at this restaurant - myself and three friends. The meals are a generous size and the taste is true Thai. We ordered the banquet B for four people and we were able to mix and match our selection to suit ourselves. There was more than enough food for us all and we also took some home. I recommend the steamed snapper with lemon and the Thai chicken curry is authentic and tasty. The banquet enabled us to have desert of ice cream and lychees with fresh apple and cream. The Botanic Gardens are about 200 metres away so we actually tied the meal in with a visit to the Gardens before hand - I recommend Thai Tradition Restaurant as a lovely way to finish the day after an afternoon browsing the Botanic Gardens. We will definitely do it again.

We have been to this restaurant previously and enjoyed it very much. We were there last night, 6 of us, two were overseas visitors, couldn't fault the food, although a bit pricey. The waiting staff left a lot to be desired though. They were not welcoming, just pointed to our table rather than show us to it, then we were totally ignored for the next ten minutes. The food was very slow in arriving and each dish was delivered to the table at different times, one was totally wrong and when it was pointed out the waitress stood there and it seemed like, either "eat it or wear it" type of attitude.
Once we finished our meal, that was it, no one came near the table and it was quite a long time before the table was cleared, no dessert, tea, coffee or anything else was offered. Not a good look for our overseas visitors, will not be returning.

My wife and I went for our first date here in 2006. Food, service and atmosphere was great. We have been back several times, often with friends and family and had a great evening. We have however noticed a gradual decline in the quality of service and food over the past 4 years. Prices have also increased considerably over this period. The last time we went with a group of 5, service was very slow even though there were only a few diners present. The mains were brought out at different times. Some of us were almost finished dining when the last main was delivered. Have avoided the place for the past year.

Look I have been very sceptical since this restaurant was sold and was under new management, I tried once after the ownership had changed and I wasn't at all happy with the quality of the meals. Me and my partner got a two"Tom Yum (chicken) soups" and Spicy Girl (She's hot!!). The soups were 10/10 in flavour the spicy girl I have to be fair and say I would give it 7/10 I think it was good but a little bit bland in actual flavour, but for the price you pay it feeds two people. I have to give this experience a good feedback, until next time I guess. I hope they can carry on delivering good quality food.

First time there today. I ordered takeaway over the phone. Pad thai chicken was great but for $16.00 didn't quite hit the spot. I'm a big eater and usually buy 2 servings from another thai eatery in Manukau which is just right for $10.50 each. This restaurants serving is a quart larger however I wouldn't be willing to spend $32.00 when it's cheaper elsewhere and of similar quality. Hill Rd Pad thai was delicious and of a higher standard than I've had elsewhere.

Service wise the waitress had no rapport. I'm a very humble friendly guy and she seemed intimidated. Probably my bald head and missing teeth.. lol

Will I go there again? YES. To try out there other dishes.

We visited this restaurant last night and were really disappointed. We ordered a mixed seafood meal and a squid one and the squid was overcooked in the mixed meal and borderline in the purely squid one. The flavour of the mixed seafood was really nice but the entree and the squid meal were quite bland. When we told the waitress that the squid was overcooked all we received was a smile!. It was not a cheap meal and a real disappointment . We will not be going back.

Delicious food but slow service even on a quite night

Just found this restaurant after a bad service (no service) experience at Bronco's.
Took a pot luck on a Monday night.
Great food, good service, fair price.
Our new favorite local Thai.

My wife and I have visited this restaurant twice in recent weeks. On both occasions we were accompanied by another couple. We all found the food expertly cooked and served. The authentic serving staff were helpful and prompt in dealing with our order. We plan to make further visits with other couples as part of our Christmas and New Year celebrations.
We have especially enjoyed the varied banquet menus.

Booked in at 7:00pm Saturday night. Arrived at 6:50 and seated at 7:00pm, so far so good. Shown the table and that was it until I requested service at 7:25pm. Not even a drink offered before that!!!! People left the table next to us at 7:45pm and said good luck? WE finally got one drink each and our food (food passable for food hall take aways and nothing more). NO more offer for drinks!!! Left at 8:45 and the table that had left an hour before still had the dirty dishes on it! Went to pay by the advertised AMEX and was told they didnt accept them! NOT VERY IMPRESSED with lack of service, average food and mis represented payment type. Visit the takeaways next door for a better meal and service.

I agree with the previous reviewer - this restaurant has been ruined since it changed ownership.

It used to be a good, solid but fairly unexciting local restaurant with reasonable prices.

Unfortunately, since the restaurant came under new management (mid-2009), the menu has gone dramatically downhill, the food is noticeably inferior and the service isn't quite as good. A terrible shame.
Voi-marie
this used to be my favourite place but they have just changed ownership. i would usually order via ph then collect and last time i did this they did not advise me of the change of ownership nor menu change. i didnt find out until i got home and saw my snapper dish had been replaced with some cheap fish that was as rubbery as an old boot yet they had let me pay like $26 for it. needless to say i took it all back - the other dishes were also an embarrassment to thai food altogether. do not go to this place you will only be ripped off and dissapointed.
