Review Blue Rose - Auckland Central

Oliver Williams
Was recommended by acquaintances, and it did not disappoint. Tried the palusami with corned beef pie and pulled pork pie. Both were delicious. If we weren't going for lunch with the family, we would have tried more. The service was good, there's delicious offerings, coffee was good too. The decor was interesting and homely. It's so nice seeing fellow Pacific Islanders running a successful restaurant/Cafe and sharing culture through food and service. Looking forward to our next visit. Vinaka!

Delicious pies in a cute coffee shop. They have several different pies in the display for you to select from. I had the palusami and the server recommended pulled pork for my other pie (she said if you like a little sweetness, pulled pork is perfect). I love that the crust of the pie is more crunchy rather than pillowy like a croissant. They also have baked goods which looked utterly delicious and a full breakfast menu and also coffee drinks. But I was here for the pies and mission accomplished. I'm satisfied.

Maybe the best place in Sandringham for pies, delicious food, coffees and THE BEST snickers shakes you'll find in Auckland. Blue Rose does some amazing pies - boil up, hangi, smoked fish. They're pretty much perfect from the pastry to the flavour, to being generous in size and yum to eat. We had breakfast there recently - had an Americano coffee and shared the Big Breakfast. One of my highlights every time I come here is the snickers shakes. Honestly, I can't think of another shake anywhere in Auckland that I love as much as these ones.

This place is a gem. You have to get in early to get a taste of the best-selling pies they make. I'm yet to try all of them! So far, I've tried the Hangi pie and pulled pork pie. Both are delicious 🤌 My partner has tried Beef bolognese pie, which he gave a double thumbs up for. I'm planning to try their big breakfast on our next visit. The hot chocolate I ordered was average. I ordered it with oat milk. However, it was served with trim milk, which I wasn't aware of. It gave me an upset stomach as I'm lactose intolerant due to my IBS. It was also quite watery from the trim milk. The place has an authentic feel to it. Outdoor seating is available. We sat out in the garden, which was warm and lovely. Staff are friendly and full of energy. Gives the place a nice vibe. Overall cleanliness - 8/10. Will keep this in the loop of our pie dates! 😇

Bought visitors from Palmerston North for the pies. They absolutely loved it. Only had hangi pies today but definitely be back to try more of their yummy pies. Great prices for great pies. Abit tight for space but food was great 😁

I ordered a lamb salad and Mango smoothie and my mum ordered a Pork belly Benny and Flat white. We both loved it!! Absolutely worth the $$ and divine. I’m not one to order salad for breakfast but this was good for a change! Thank you 😊

Came here on a cloudy Saturday around brunch time and was able to have a seat immediately. I got the lamb salad and a hangi pie. I enjoyed both but the pie was truly something special, I wish I had more room in my stomach for more pies! I also had a latte that is not pictured but it was the best latte I’ve had in Auckland so far. Cute atmosphere and my waitress was friendly!

He Kai Tino reka kei konei. Went here for my birthday. Buzzing atmosphere crowded with hungry customers. Place is filled with whanau photos which gives it that extra warm atmosphere. Still drooling thinking about the luau corn beef pie haha. Decent prices and deliciousness all round. Can't wait to try their whole menu, one dish at a time.

Blue Rose Cafe is my go to Cafe when I’m in Sandringham. Blue Rose is a Polynesian style cafe serving Polynesian inspired food. They have a great selection of Pies. My favourite is the Palusami Pie, but they also do a good Smoked Fish Pie, Luau and Cream Cheese, Hangi Pie and many more. The Koko cupcake is also a must try when you’re there. The cafe menu is definitely worth a look. My go to order is the Pork Belly Eggs Bene. Unlike other places that do a Pork Belly Eggs Bene, Blue Rose actually serve you an island sized portion of Pork Belly! Not thin slivers like other places, but a decent portion. Love it! Weekends are always busy and if you’re not early or willing to wait for a table, you’ll have to settle for takeaway, but it’s worth the the wait for a table. I normally eat in, ordering from the cafe menu, and then take away a pie and Koko Cupcake for later. I suggest you do the same. Robbie and his team do an amazing job at Blue Rose Cafe. They are always friendly and do their best to get orders out quickly, even when they are super busy, which is always. The coffee is good. The smoothies are good and the food is good. What more do you want from a cafe? Get to Blue Rose Cafe in Sandringham!

Delicious brisket pie, these have got to be the best pies in town if not the entire country, the service was awesome and they were both friendly and accomodating. A bit pricey but definitely worth if on these pies, trust me. I'll be back!

I had the most wonderful time at Blue Rose. It was recommended to me as the place to go for New Zealand pies, and it did not disappoint. I received some of the most friendly and helpful service of my life. Also, the coffee, with the coconut milk and coconut sugar, was perfection. I had the hangi pie and chocolate cupcake. Both were exceptional.

Best place to eat ! especially if you've been away from home for so long and need your Maori/Islander food fix ! Not a good place if you're trying to diet; I'll start next week. Ordered the Island plate, Hangi pie and Kalo pie. 10/10 ! Service was mean, Kai was mean, Sounds and atmosphere was mean !

Great pies, cookies are delightful. Definitely a must try!

A busy location which we wisely booked for. Excellent food with a Samoan flavour and generous portions. Eggs Benny with bacon or avo and hash Browns were a hit. The pies are great value and tasty at $8. Will be back

Price acceptable I like the pie. If you like sweets the muffin will suit you.

The Blue Rose Cafe is my go to place when I want to show off what is best about Aotearoa, Auckland, Maori, Pasifika & the best quality cafe food & drink delights. I am confident I am always guaranteed the best when I eat at the premises or order food! When my aiga gathers, Blue Rose koko Samoa chocolate cake, afghans and cupcakes are must haves! Everyone always treats you with aroha aro'a alofa and respect. Kia ora Lenny, Meitaki ma'ata Robbie! Malo Blue Rose people

The most gorgeous decor, and super-generous portions. Central Auckland doesn't have enough Polynesian influenced cafes like Blue Rose. This is THE place to come for a luau, palusami or hangi pie - and the koko samoa cake is delicious!

I had trouble finding something I could eat on the lunch menu, due to some dietary restrictions. The lovely lady at the counter devised an altered dish for me, which was tasty, served quickly, and made an awesome coffee to go with it. Lovely food and coffee! Great, friendly, helpful staff! Highly recommended!

Absolute gem in the rocks!! Loved the atmosphere and the homely feeling. Food was absolutely delicious. We had eggs benedict with smoked salmon, best hollondaise I've ever had, coffee was perfect. I wanted to take a hangi pie and wild sausage roll but was on a long trip...will be back definitely! A mix of culture and class

Staff are friendly and have great customer service. Food is yummy with reasonable prices. I had eggs bene while hubby tried the hangi pie. Atmosphere surely taps into my childhood which brought back some very found memories of my grandparents growing up in Grey Lynn. Thank you Blue Rose Cafe

Okay Robby I have to admit I haven’t been able to visit BUT heck yeah I had some of the best food ever from here the other day at work. A colleague stopped in and brought back a boil up pie, a corned beef pie and an array of the most drop dead delicious slices and donuts for us to share. OMG - awesome. Will be coming to visit soon so I can experience it all in person soon.

Robbie, Lenny & Team are just awesome! They've hosted my team and fanau in the cafe, also catered to my meetings and functions over the past two years - I don't look anywhere else. No order is too small or large, no catering drop-off venue has been too inconvenient and my last minute requests didn't phase them either! The catering menu has great options, but they are also flexible in changing things up a bit to suit my needs. Koko samoa cupcakes, smoothies and their pies are just delish - be prepared to deal with regular BRC cravings!

Came here on Tuesday and had your Palusami Pie... The most scrumptious pie I've ever had. I'll be back to try your hangi pie. The Koko Samoa cake hit the spot for me. It was moist and had the cake gods singing. Last but not least, the playlist of old skool RnB was on point. Had me walking down memory lane.

I’m here all the time. It’s my local cafe. Highly recommend the Hangi Pie and the Pork Belly Eggs Benedict

Honestly if you’re reading this do yourself a favour and get yourself one of the Hangi Pies, they are AMAZING. It was my first time visiting today, but you can 100% tell that this place is a local favourite. Watching the staff and customers interact (on a first name basis in some cases) gave such a sense of community and a real feeling of care (which is so rare these days- especially in Auckland). Hats off to Blue Rose Cafe, I will be back very soon for a sit down visit!

Was craving a big PIE!!! So went to Sandringham's Blue Rose. Got the Palusami pie, first time trying a corned beef pie actually - very tasty! Was jam packed with corned beef, and the pastry was light, not dense at all. The size is bigger than your standard pie so I would say the price of $6.50 is more than decent!

Also got the chocolate lamington for old times sake. Quite good but maybe a bit too sweet. I guess lamingtons were always gonna be on the sweet side so it's probably just me!

Would be keen to come back and try their other pies because they all sound amazing, and looks very authentic to its Polynesian roots.

Was exploring my neighbourhood and decided to pop by and try out their pies on a whim. Ended up getting a Palusami pie, a Hangi pie and a peanut caramel slice. I’m not exaggerating when I say those were the best pies and best slice I’ve ever had in my life. You can see and taste the love and care the goes into every item. They don’t cheap out either, their pies are packed to the brim with filling. It was an amazing first introduction into Polynesian flavours and this will definitely become a regular for me.

Went for breakfast and ordered the blue rose big breakfast and mix plate and they didn't fail to disappoint with the portions...only
downside was the creamy mushroom wasn't creamy & they forgot to bring our hot
drinks with our food as we stated from the
beginning but otherwise good food and price and will go again 👍

In an unimaginable time, Robbie and his team catered to my brother's funeral back in April 2019 for 300+ people.
The food was UNBELIEVABLY amazing. Fresh, delicious assortments of savory and sweet. So much food at an unbeatable price and on time delivery. Words can not express how grateful we were to have you cater for us on this day.
Thank you again and can not reccomend you and your team more. Simply OUTSTANDING!

We had a lovely breakfast this morning at Blue Rose. Nice to find a Pacifica eatery in the city for a change. The go-to of course is Palusami pie; taro leaves with corned beef was super interesting all wrapped inside a superbly flaky pastry. The Mrs loved their Hangi pie too, and followed up with Koko Samoan cupcake - mildly coconut flavored, went well with coffee. Highly recommended and must visit.

Cute little cafe on a main road. It wasnt hard to get parking infront of cafe. We ordered both the hangi and luau pie, pancakes and big breakfast plus a mocha. All were cooked well with quality ingredients. I'd say the only thing lacking is communication/service, when I got my pancakes it had no syrup and I wasnt sure if they forgotten to add it but only after I asked they told me it was with the sauce tray by the counter. How was I supposed to know? I like that samoan twist there is a consistent theme of coconut and samoan koko. Also I liked looking around the cafe and noticed that a lot of thought went into even the smallest details in the decor.

Highly recommend! Great location, nice chill vibes. Food was amazing & exceeded expectations! Awesome service, Generous serving sizes, good home cooked style food! Will leave room to try some baked goods next time ☺️

I was told that this cafe serves food with a Polynesian twist and it did not disappoint. The decor is a vintage and blue throughout. I ordered the vegetarian option luau and cream cheese. This was not only filling but delicious, everything you want in comfort food! My sister ordered the corned beef and luau (taro leaves). This was satisfying because the corned beef wasn’t greasy and it didn’t overpower the taro leaves. The pastry for both pies is soft and flakey not the annoying flakes but the melt in your mouth type! I will be returning for brunch. The service is good, friendly and the locals are regulars because they greet not only the employees but those that were dinning there by name as well. Good neighbourhood vibe👏🏽

Coffees lacked flavour, very little tomato given in toastie sandwich, famous pie came lukewarm and had to request it to be heated further. Wouldn’t recommend.

Came in for family brunch recommend by our cousin who lives close by and is a frequent! My step dad is Samoan so we always have palusami in the house and we’re so excited to learn there was a island fusion cafe in existence! With palusami pies!! Loved the the coconut yogurt! Mussel fritters were delicious! As was the palusami pie we took home! Our wait was outrageously long even for drinks, maybe because we were sat around the back outside. We thought maybe we had been forgotten about - It all arrived in the end leaving us all very satisfied! Lovely staff! Family vibe! Good prices! Huge portions! Will definitely return! Thank you!! 👍🏼✨

My work takes me everywhere but whenever I get a taste that takes me back to my childhood, I get teleported home. These guys make a Luau Pie, Luau + Corned Beef Pie and a chocolate cake made of Koko. Thanks team at Blue Rose. My only negative is I had 45mins to eat it all. Not on you, that's on me. I'll be back with my people. For now you get a 4.5 for the food and I'm giving you my additional (not to mention impossible 0.5) for taking me home and making me tear up thinking about how much my late dad would've loved your place. Respect.

After the hype & good reviews, I decided to check this place out for myself. I'm glad I did!! From the decedent chocolate icing on the Afghan, to the flaky pastry and rich flavors of the Palusami pie! From the moment I walked in, I was greeted with a smile & instantly felt comfortable. The food was delicious & to be honest, faultless. I know, I'll definitely be going back. Highly recommended. 👍👌💯

Cute little cafe. I only had a coffee there so can‘t say anything about the food, but the coffee was alright. Staff was very friendly and welcoming and loved the atmosphere.

Homely cafe, we went over there for sort of brunch, and was surprised by the massive portion, and the food exceeded our expectation :).. delicious .... staff was super friendly and kind.. made us feel so much like home.. would be going there on our Sundays :)... BTW the Almond and blueberry cake and the chocolate cake was too good...

Full of character and fresh look and feel, a gem of a place, relaxed and quaint. Will be returning for more of the lovely pies and coffee. Friendly staff also

A wonderful little cafe situated in the Sandringham area. Great vibe great atmosphere not to mention the staff and cooks are amazing aswell. Food was excellent great portion sizes and is reasonably priced well I had the eggs bene with crispy pork and it was delicious. I highly recommend eating here you will not be disappointed.

This is the loveliest little cafe I’ve come across for ages, so stylish and retro and light. The portions are massive, check out the huge pies! Really good coffee and the breakfast menu is delicious.
Rose
Really lovely cafe, no pretensions just good food and coffee. Couldn't finish our wedges - had a massive pile of delicious bacon/cheese/sour cream on top, just too much on top of all the other food we ordered! Come here with an appetite for sure.

We love the pies, palusami & hangi. Looking forward to sampling the boil up, keeps selling out.
Island plates delicious

Ducked in during the rain after an exam for lunch, and was very pleased. At first service seemed a little slow, but then the food came out and I saw why. Serving size was extremely generous. Homemade beef patty that was a inch thick with great flavor, very generous serving of chips. Staff were extremely friendly, as were the rest of the customers, and will definitely be back...

Update 7/03/17

Consistently impressed and pleased with a quality of food and standard of customer service. Staff are more than friendly and their rapport with each other also makes this a very enjoyable atmosphere to have a coffee or bite to eat. Options are varied, all done with fresh ingredients, everything made in-store from their baking options to the aioli on their chips. No hesitations in recommending it or coming back.

The food was delicious and the service was polite! I had the pancakes with banana and bacon and my partner had the big breakfast. The mushrooms were very tasty. The chai latte was great as well. The only downside was that when we arrived they hadn't cleared any tables.

Blue Rose Cafe

At the cafe there are tables and magnificent chairs and indoors and some outdoor tables as well. There are also some food you would love to come over and get. It is a takeaway/dine in so dive in. Breakfast was strawberry cupcakes with chocolate on top plus a hot chocolate with marshmallows.T he cupcake was piquant. The hot chocolate was swell and snug. But it tastes exceptional with marshmallows. Lunch was the raw fish and it was appalling. The fish was undercooked and it wasn’t healthy. Overall it was a good cafe but the raw fish let it down.

RATING

***

By Italiah and Fatima

Blue Rose is true Kiwi culture. Decor of items from our Nanas and mums kitchens in the 50s and 60s.
Service that's always friendly and cheerful. Great coffee. Tea in a pot. And home style cooking that fills uou with memories and good food.
The cakes are huge as are the Sausage rolls.
Small and intimate.
They do great catering as well.
But don't all go on Sunday morning as we won't get in. 😊

Great location for this cafe. Very warm, welcoming. We had pre booked our meal a day prior to coming to the cafe the following day, I think it was due to the cooking time of the luau and pork. Love the coffee, as I didn't eat pork, I swapped my pork for luau with a friend and I loved the luau. Taro, raw fish and potato salad was sublime. I didn't taste any dessert, my friends recommended me the pineapple pie for next time

Have passed this place on the way to my daughter's
She suggested that we go there for coffee. Doesn't look much from the outside, but gosh the atmosphere was electric. The staff were so lovely and helpful. My mochacchino was very good. We ordered two cakes and the guy very kindly cut them into 3. We will definitely be back for a meal when they reopen. Will recommend to all our friends.

Located on busy Sandringham Road, and in very close proximity to Edendale Primary school, we imagine Blue Rose is a popular haunt for mums dropping and collecting kids from school, a good location for that reason alone! Easy parking right outside and it was nice to see a full array of tables when we walked in – there are only 5 or 6 tables though. The Blue Rose wallpaper was striking and dovetailed visually into the collection of blue plates. The hallway to the outdoor courtyard also boasted plates and eclectic family artefacts on the walls, some of which were family heirlooms collected by the owner. We couldn't pinpoint whether the food aesthetic was Maori or Pacific Island in origin, so we assumed both/neither/either/all. Offering everything from taro and fry up to hangi pies, and some good ol' Kiwi tucker inbetween (read: nachos), it was hard to ascertain where they were pitching it overall. Service was laggy and eventually friendly enough. Food not mindblowing but coffee made up for it. A great local but to be honest, probably not a destination café for us.

Check out our individual comments here: husk.co.nz/lunches/blue-rose-may-2016

Fabulous cafe in Sandringham. Excellent local cafe with a Pacifica twist to some food. Thoroughly enjoyed the Hangi pie and Eggs Benny with pork belly. Good coffee. Small premises, so can be tough to get a table at peak times.

Blue Rose is a great little cafe in Sandringham that offers awesome Polynesian themed food, Polynesian styling and warm Polynesian service.

The coffee is on point and even better is it can be sweetened with coconut sugar. I didn't even no that was thing.

We ordered the Avo Eggs Benny, Pork Belly Eggs Benny and Palusami 👌🏽 Absolutely delicious. The Pork Belly Eggs Benny is one of the best versions of Eggs Benny I've had. Freakin Awesome.
l
Grabbed a Palusami Pie on the way out as there was a fresh batch ready. I was not disappointed. 👌🏽

I have already recommended this joint to friends and family and followers on other social media platforms. I will definitely be making this place my new local cafe.
Loved this Place. Nice portion sizes for the Islamd Apetite . Good Options for Beve's . I had the Avo Eggs Bene . LOVED it. Had to take home with me a Palusami Pie and Koko Samoa Keke . Good Service. Nice and polite. Meals came on time. Love the island feel too. Thanks BR Team

Visited Blue Rose one Sunday morning and it was a warm and bright distraction from the dreary weather outside. This café is distanced from the Sandringham village shops, but fits well with the area culture – welcoming, down-to-earth and individualistic. The décor is very cute with blue and white china and an old-fashioned, home-y touch, feels similar to visiting your Nana’s kitchen. I ordered the muesli which was only $9 – very reasonable for the massive bowl I received of honey-toasted oats, nuts and seeds, topped with coconut yogurt, pears and toasted shavings of coconut – also came with milk (I requested almond milk, at no extra charge :) Delicious - as was the coffee! Nice, relaxed place for a casual catch up or weekend brunch. Be aware it is on the smaller side and so could be tricky to get a table at weekends. I believe there is more seating out the back. Looking forward to my next trip to Blue Rose!!

Came here for brunch on the weekend, love little place. Was very busy when we arrived around 11am with no seats available.
I had the Blue Rose breakfast (gluten free option). It was yum - and island portions!
Only downside was we waited almost 50mins for our food - looked like they only had 1 chef in the kitchen. Overall pretty good meal.
My wife and I had breakfast here, and it was excellent. Bread was freshly baked, and came with a lovely mango salsa. Coffee was good, and my wife liked getting chocolate fish with her mochaccino. Reasonable prices and friendly service, so excellent value all round.

Been to Blue Rose 3 times with my sisters. Each time I've really enjoyed the coffee and different food on the menu. T and the team are really friendly and the pies are really good! Love this place!

Quirky little cafe in sandringham with Maori element to it. Coffee was good. Had savory muffin which was fresh and tasty. Good little spot to visit will come back for sure.

We stopped in for a quick coffee on our way to Ponsonby where we were going to go Nacho hunting and low and behold, BR has them on their menu! So we ordered a large, they were yummy, could have done w. a bit more of the delicious, sweet sauce, otherwise, we struggled to finish it off as the serving was so big. Love the island flavour @ BR too, what w. the palusami pie and Koko Samoa choc cake. The Supreme coffee's a winner too. Check out the pic of the Mother's Day spesh out front too.

Was here this morning for breakfast - was greeted straight away; ordered coffees & set up a tab as suggested by the woman who served us. After having our coffees and chatting, my friend and I realised that out breakfasts were taking quite a long time to come out - we were the only ones who ordered food, there were a few walk ins for takeaway coffee etc. Ok, they only had one cook on board but I didn't think it should've taken that long - suffice to say I had worked up an appetite! After about 25 minutes or so, our food was served with an apology & thanks for our patience. But then, I wasn't given polenta toast, nor was there hollandaise sauce:/ Instead, I was given sourdough & some blended butter mix (?)! I was hungus so I ate reserving my judgment til after; the eggs were perfectly poached, the sourdough freshly made that morning had thee best texture & the side order of chipolatas were sooo scrummy. I left satisfied, as did my friend with her scrambled egg/avocado on toast dish. Homemade condiments won me over, as did the unpretentious & welcoming decor, the family photos a nice touch too. The staff are cool which of course adds to the feel of the place - will go back & ask for 'real' hollandaise next time. :)

We drive past here all the time and finally stopped in this morning. It was quiet when we arrived but got really busy within half an hour so glad we got there when we did as they only had one chef this morning. The first big tick is that they have Supreme coffee and do it super well. We ordered the eggs benedict with ham on the bone and the mushrooms. I don't usually order eggs bene but it was pretty good and eggs were cooked well although really glad I got the hollandaise on the side as I didn't really enjoy that. Partner really loved his meal of mushrooms although I'm not sure if opting for the potato bake over toast was a good idea. Definitely will be back for coffee and a sample of their sweet treats.
