Review Wang Wang Spring Pancake - Auckland Central

Grace Sifa
First time here after seeing a video online and didn't disappoint. I've been on Dom road many a times to try the different places and would have never come here had it not been for that video. Hole in the wall place and older interior. Server doesn't speak much English but just pointing at the menu is fine. Had hot tea and 2 dishes, shredded pork and pork mince and bean sprout along with 20 pancakes (cause 10 wasn't enough for us 2). Both were delicious and pancakes was super thin. Would love Chilli oil but I didn't ask so maybe they have this. I'll be back next time we go to Dom road.

Nice & reasonably priced Chinese pancake/dumpling dishes. The boss is really nice & accommodating, when we came in a big group, he did his best to arrange table for us

Really enjoyed the food - delicious and a new way of eating Chinese food with pancakes. Busy little shop, don't think it has a toilet, the two staff team do a commendable job getting food out quickly. It's not a flash place but I really liked it, food was great and I'd come back.

Small but lovely restaurant..they were very busy when we visited which is why it took a while for the food to be served, but it was worth waiting for! The staff's English is not great, but with the help of other customers, we got it sorted! We had pancakes, egg and chives, cabbage and glass noodles, gua ba rou (a sweet pork dish) and sour chilli potatoes. The food is North Eastern Chinese and one of my favourite regional foods! Highly recommended.

This is one of our favourite place for lunch. It is a small place and usually quite crowded. Be early and you will get your table. Though small but sitting was pretty comfortable. Service was friendly and the food was good. The servings were reasonable and the prices were affordable. If you like some simple Chinese food, this may be the place for you.

Food is always bomb here. They Cater to dietary demands and great place for big groups where you can share dishes.

A small shop that serves up a large menu. The pancake wraps are a bit glutinous so they won't break when you wrap them. They come in a set of 5 or 10. You can order a range of different dishes to use to wrap but you can also substitute the wraps for rice. The Shredded Pork in Peking Sauce seems to be a popular choice there as well as the Sweet and Sour Pork which appears on almost every table. We also got the Stir Fry Pork Belly with Potatoes, the Eggs and Chives Pancake that, and the Shanghainese Smoked Fish. All dishes were tasty though a little oily. The shop is small inside and gets very crowded at night thus becomes quite stuffy with little airflow. Customer and food service is fast and satisfactory but wait time could be a bit longer, especially during warmer months. Overall shop is clean and tidy.

I ate this dish 3 days within a week. It’s simply amazing! Better than Peking Duck! The 魚香肉絲 matched with the wrap is just sooooooo amazing... every other dish is ok... but I’m basing this review on just this one dish. Service: 4/5 Presentation: 4/5 Food Quality: 5/5 Food Quantity: 5/5 Price per person: $20-$25

One of my favorite places. Most dishes are yummy! Love to hangout with friends here

Really enjoyed the bean sprouts with pork mince. Busy little place and one to add to your stops on dominion road.

Pretty good. Flavor of dishes met 90% of my expectations since I am from China. But this is a good place for authentic Chinese food.
Astrid Chung
We have a delicious dinner here and price reasonable.

Spicy and sour shredded potato was legit, full of flavours. But this time the shredded pork in Peking sauce was a bit too salty and the stir fried veggies and eggs tasted a bit plain. Overall was tasty!

Located among a throng of Asian restaurants on Dominon Rd is this tiny eatery. It must be very popular because we went and it was super busy. So busy that we had to share our table with other random diners. That was ok though, it all makes for the experience. Customer service was lovely. Interior is quite cramped but enough space for you to move about. We ordered pancakes with two fillings, bean sprouts and I can’t remember if the meat we ordered was pork or beef🤦‍♀️ I do remember both dishes being VERY TASTY. I loved the novelty of putting my meal together and especially loved the flavour they put into the bean sprouts. Definitely recommend trying this place out!

Ive never had northern chinese food before and I was stoked with the pancakes!! We ordered the shredded pork in peking sauce and it was soooo good!! The crunchy sping onion on the side was the perfect balance. We also ordered pork and cabbage dumplings which were some of the best ive ever had.<br/>The place is nothing special with a mix match of furniture and random menu items stuck to the wall.<br/>The staff had limited english and Im not sure if it was communication issues or not but seemed quite rude.

The food is tasty with reasonable price. It also was served with big portion. Nice service, after I visited a couple of times, the staff can remember our special request. Fast deliver service, we do not have to wait long time even in peak time.

It is an affordable Chinese restaurant. Staff there are passionate with high efficiency. The food were served in large portion with reasonable price. It is enough for two persons, even we cannot finish and pack them.

This is a small dine in on Dominion Rd, can easily walk past. I absolutely recommend the shredded pork with Peking sauce as a filling for the pancake with egg & sprouts 👏🏽💯💯. So delicious and fragrant, you wrap the pancake up and enjoy that morsel of goodness😍. The other dish I recommend is the beef noodles, the broth is full of flavour and you get a decent amount of beef chunks. The noodles are good thickness and just taste fresh. Everything you want and need a noodle to be. Will be returning for this on a cold night. There a few tables, be prepared to share with others. Friendly staff, when they give recommendations, take their word.

Delicious!! We went right at opening and glad we did, there were lines outside by the time we finished. The pork with Peking sauce was next level delicious, dumplings were fantastic and crispy, spring onion pancake had lots of spring onion and the chilli beef was yum! Looking forward to going back soon 😁

This has become our go-to place since coming here a few months ago. We’ve been here three times since. Everything we’ve gotten has been delicious and affordable. The cumin potato and chicken is astounding. In our opinion 10 spring pancakes and one dish to fill the pancakes with is enough for two people. Another option to share between two people is getting a soup and the spring onion pancake or pulled pancake.

You’ll be lucky to get a seat during dinner time! Got the sweet and sour pork which was so awesome - the vinegar tastes great. pancakes and the shredded pork with Peking sauce was also 👌👌. This place gets extremely busy and it may take you time to get anyone’s attention. Saw a couple of people complaining because their takeaway order was taking too long. But that’s just how the service is in this place so be warned. That being said, 4 rating was purely on the food in this instance.

Perfect place for a comfort meal if you are craving for northern Chinese food. Their “cong you bing” also known as scallion pancake is awesome. I also really like their dishes with vegetables, such as eggplants, potatoes, capsicums etc, lots of variety. Really enjoy the part that you can roll your own thin savoury pancake with a mixture of meats and vegetables to your liking.
Munchies
This is one of the best lil spots on dominion road for spring pan cake. Glass noodles and pork, cold potato, spicy pork, sweet and sour pork fillet, crispy sweet and sour, stir fried eggs bean sprouts or the lamb and cumin are all delicious. I have not come across one disappointing dish. The dumplings are pretty awesome too when they haven’t sold out. Some dishes are pricey but don’t lack in flavour or size. Most of the menu is on the cheap eats side. <br/>The outlet is small so be sure to be early to avoid waiting at lunch and dinner time. <br/>Some staff are a lil limited in english but are always happy and friendly.

Yum food cheap eat but the wait time to be seated is a pain...........I don’t have long comment why it has to be 140 character at least???????

Great northern Chinese restaurant for a quick and delicious feed that won't break bank. They have an a huge selection of stir fried dishes ft. handmade super thin savoury pancakes! Their dumplings and soups are also very nice!

Super yum Chinese home style dishes! Been looking for authentic chinese places with vegetarian options and this is the best one yet. We will be visiting again for sure!<br/>Service was the usual.

Have been here over and over again, and the food here is so delicious so I cannot stop going here. Must try! The spring pancake and dumplings are both great to taste!👍🏻

Have seen lot of good comments on this restaurant, so come with friends this weekend.. but the taste is just so so, do not  feel like to come again,

Good value and mouth-watering food. We waited for 10 mins outside before we got a table for 4 last Thursday night. We ordered 20 x spring pancakes, stir-fried shredded potato with capsicum, shredded pork with peking sauce, Sichuan style pork belly (MUST-TRY), pork and cabbage dumpling and also wang wang vegetarian soup (YOU'LL LOVE IT). Shared between 4 of us and it was just $18 each, excluding drinks of course. We were absolutely stuffed by the time we left the restaurant hehe :)

Spring pancake is one of the traditional food comes from north of China. As a Chinese from the same region, I have to confirm this restaurant does a marvelous job. If you are not a Chinese, you must trust my taste and follow my step, giving it a try. In the restaurant, you can experience 100 percent of resemble flavor from their original place. So go ahead and try these delicious food.

Recently a few of us had lunch at Wang Wang.  It was a small restaurant.<br/>But I must say that the dishes were quite good and tasty.  The service was<br/>normal, as expected.  <br/><br/>Will definitely come again for other dishes.

Fast service, great food! <br/>Tried it for the first time the other day and it has already become one of my favourite restaurants, very underrated. The soup was delicious, plenty of flavour 👌, but the wraps were just heavenly. <br/><br/>Could definitely see myself frequenting this place. Price is very good for the quality of food you receive.

Their hot and sour soup is amazing! A perfect combination with the spring onion pancakes or egg and chive pancakes. This place serves excellent quality dishes for cheap prices. A wonderfully authentic experience.

We had a delicious vegetarian meal here, they are extremely friendly and accommodating. They gave us some great advice on what to order. The pancakes were nice and thin, just right! We love it and will definitely come back again to try out the other fillings.

It was delicious eating here. We did not mind the space as it was fast and efficient. We had pork with fungus stir fry which was had the full wok flavour. Pan fried dumplings with pork and cabbage was lovely with vinegar. We also had the chive pastry cakes which we thought needed flavour. We recommend the pork. Aubergine soup (72). My friend complained it had too much pork pieces, which is unheard off! Would like to come back to try other dishes.

This is a really nice restaurant. The food comes in generous portions at really low prices. There isn't many tables though, and the service is pretty meh.... But overall, the food is pretty good.

The food here is incredibly cheap and delicious. You wrap all the meat and veges in a thin pancake- like a burrito and then it. You can order whatever dishes you like to put in the pancake. Tasty and good value for money. However the restaurant itself is a little crowded as it's tiny so I would recommend booking.
HelenMeng2000
The restaurant is small so I recommend to make a booking otherwise there may be a long waiting time. The food however is very delicious and cheap. U wrap the fillings inside like a burrito.

I like spring pancakes. The restaurant makes authentic pancakes which are QQ der and chewy. Spicy and sour potatoes and pancakes are a match made in heaven. Just be sure to reserve a seat if you want to come. It is very hot. And be patient, they're very slow to serve.

Wang wangs ^__^<br/>Went there friday night. Amazing service, best sweet and sour pork I have ever tried. All round good vibes. Cant wait to return. <br/><br/>
Sid
The food here is really good, would fully recommend this place if you are looking for a affordable and decent meal. It isn't the flashiest place, and could improve on cleanliness. However the food is delicious. Make sure to book because they are normally very busy and there are limited table spaces.

Quiet little place located at the edge of the Asian food strip on Dominion Rd. Since it's away from the hustle and bustle, plenty of parking can be found on the side streets. We ordered the beef noodles in soup, pork and chives dumplings and egg and chives pan cake. Good sized portions and the dishes tasted great. Cost $30 all up, quite reasonable. Service was good, dishes came out without any delay. Trademark meal seems to be the pancakes, which you can order with various filling. Pretty much everyone in the restaurant was having that. We are going to try that next time 😋

Came here with colleges for a mini pre-birthday celebration. This restaurant is really full and very popular, definitely recommend booking in advance to avoid disappointment. <br/><br/>Between the five of us we ordered 15 spring pancakes (so 3 each), we also chose a dish each. That was more than enough. All the dishes were delicious and flavourful, and went wonderfully with the soft pancakes. We could not be happier. The shredded pork with Peking duck sauce was especially enjoyed by all. <br/><br/>My husband and colleagues also really enjoyed the spring onion pancakes, although I found them a little bit greasy. They were definitely generous with the amount of spring onions they put in though.<br/><br/>My only other critique of the restaurant is the location of their bathroom - to access it you have to go through the kitchen. Not very hygienic and a bit inconvenient. Hopefully this is something they will work on in the future. <br/><br/>All in all friendly service, and yummy food. Would recommend coming with a bigger group so you could older a variety of dishes to share.

This is definitely something different, if you like Peking duck, this is definitely for you! Cheap eats where you order various dishes and some spring pancakes, wrap and eat! <br/><br/>Highly recommend the pork with Peking sauce, spicy pork with fungus and mushroom, and the sweet and sour pork (super yummy and crispy!).<br/>I have also tried the sprout with potato noodle (which is a type of noodle not potato looking at all). The sprouts were overcooked for my liking though! <br/><br/>The place is small and cosy, and even though the staff looks serious and doesn't talk much, they are actually super helpful and friendly. It gets busy here too, so hope you are lucky to get a seat :)<br/><br/>So do try it!

Routine customer of this place. <br/><br/>Traditional northern China dishes served here. Bit oily, but the taste was authentic, exactly the same as what I had at home. <br/><br/>However, downgraded by the crowded dining room and bad service.
FoodieCCC
Low price but delicious spring pancakes! The spring pancakes are different from those in Beijing, so at the very bbeginning, I'm afraid that they will be awful. However, I suddenly fall in love with them after only one bite! The combination looks weird to me but tastes bloody perfect.
I_like_pickles
The owners here are so friendly!<br/>The food is very affordable here. It's a DIY meal where you order the pancakes and fillings of your choice, accompanied with salad. Similar to assembling a Peking duck wrap.<br/><br/>My suggestion would be to order one lot of pancakes, finish that, then order more.<br/>My reasoning is because the pancakes tend to stiffen when they cool, making it more difficult to wrap.
Michelle Hwang
Before the owner changed, I really like visiting there for Spring Wrap, an iconic northern Chinese food. But when I visited there agin recently, I was find that both wrap and fried dishes were not as good as before. Color, smell and taste were all not recommendable.

We just thought we would try the two sweet pancakes follow a meal out. We tried the red bean and sweet pastry pancakes. Quite nice and alot for only $8. They are quite large in size. The place was full and looked to have nice food. <br/><br/>One day we will go back to try dinner.

We came here for a late evening meal. My girlfriend was quite violently ill later on in the night with not much else to attribute to it but this meal. I wasn't sick and my meal was nice and overall it was cheap. So I'll come back to review this place again (with hopefully no injuries ). But for now. Crap rating.

Food is good. As for the service, don't get your hopes up. <br/><br/>We're fans of the potato noodles with pork mince (order these with the spring pancakes which are like crepes). Be aware that the waitress always tries to warn you against ordering this option. The first time, she insisted that white people find them disgusting and we shouldn't order them. I guess her best interests must have been blurred in translation, but she really didn't have to go through that much effort in trying to convince us against buying it - the noodles really are delicious! The only thing slightly odd might be the chewier than al dente texture - no foul tastes or foreign ingredients involved! The cold shredded potato as a side are also good, really worth it at $3 for a small dish. Try the spring onion chinese pancake for a pastry-like starter.
Cherries_inthesnow
This place is really popular with the Asian crowd. The last time I was here, there was a line outside the door with people waiting to get in.<br/><br/>Don't judge it by the ambience, as it's your typical Chinese restaurant; crowded and small.<br/>The food though: tasty, generous portions and everything I'd tried there had been fresh and cooked pretty fantastically. Not fine dining by any means, but it's comfort food done in the best way.<br/><br/>Do try the spring onion pan bread and the hot and sour soup, not too intense so would suit most palates.<br/><br/>Check it out, I guarantee you'll be pleasantly surprised. :)

The pancake was nice and thin. But the shredded pork we ordered was so salty... My body simply could not handle it. I drank more than a litre of water after the meal... And the restaurant was so hot, i felt like i was in a sauna the whole time we were eating. One of the customer dining next to our table had to step outside to get some fresh air a few times during his meal. Poor man.

I really wasn't expecting much from this tiny restaurant. But surely enough I was insanely surprised with how delicious everything was, speedy to get to the table, surprisingly filling, I simply cannot wait to come back. It's difficult to translate what we had into English but we ordered the most recommended popular items, and boy was it an absolute hit with us!

One of the smaller asian restaurants tucked away on dominion road, Wang wang spring pancake caught our eye with its name! Heading inside, this place is clean, simple and busy. Luck for us there was one free table left when we visited for dinner during the week. The staff were quick to take our order but our food would be at least 20 – 30 minutes away we were told. The menu features a lot of different pancake options and your usual Chinese dishes. We ordered the braised tofu, braised eggplant and one 'sweet pasty cake' pancake. As we've never tried a Chinese pancake before we had to give one a go! Looking more like a flat pastry piece than a traditional pancake, it was pleasantly sweet!
Essenity
What a little surprise! This restaurant is small but looks clean and bright. I had a bit of trouble finding its English name as it is in Chinese. Should have guessed it's exactly what it is in English. <br/><br/>The service is faster than what you'd expect from an establishment that has the chef doing everything from taking orders to cooking your dish. <br/><br/>Of course we ordered the pancake which was thin and a little stretchy (not teary) so that when you go to wrap the dishes, it doesn't rip and have everything fall apart. <br/><br/>We ordered three dishes - the pork and capsicum, the spicy pork belly with cabbage and the pork version of Peking duck. I can't actually remember the actual names of the dish at this moment. <br/><br/>I enjoyed the pork with capsicum up until the spicy pork belly with cabbage arrived. The flavours of that dish over shined everything else. However if you ate the dish by itself, it would be have definitely been too salty. So for sure have it with rice or how the restaurant intended it - wrap it in their spring pancake! The pork variation of Peking duck was rather dry but the presentation was nice and appealing. So the texture of that dish was a let down. <br/><br/>I would love to return and try other dishes they have to offer.

Typical northern Chinese cuisine, absolutely delicious!been here a few times before for their famous spring pancakes, reasonable price and very nice and clean!
Auckland Food Tours
Its easy to miss Wang Wang Spring Pancake as the only place their name is in english is on their health rating posted on the front window, which is an A.<br/><br/>Now is the time to go here as its Spring, and Spring is the time to eat pancakes (according to Chinese custom) <br/><br/>The pancakes are all freshly made and are delicate and light. Made from a rolled dough its quite a skill to get them so thin.<br/><br/>You can order from a selection of fillings, all are delicious. Try the braised pork in soy, not a sweet version but salty or the vegetarian options like potato and eggplant cut in slivers and served 'al dente'.<br/><br/>The servings are large and the restaurant is scrupulously clean. Go early as it gets very busy.
Jon Turner
I know it is a bad idea to rate a place when you haven't tried their 'signature dish.'<br/>Which is why I'm giving them a 2.5 rather then the 2 I would otherwise. <br/>I was going to go to another restaurant but saw this place first , metro top 100, looked really nice inside. Unfortunately we were getting takeaways, so decided against having the spring pancake which, admittedly, look delicious.<br/>Instead we got a sweet/sour pork, spicy beef, and a hot and sour soup. <br/>Every dish was a disaster. The pork was a little burnt and the sugar coating was sickening, the smell on opening the dish was offputting to say the least.<br/>The spicy beef was beef tongue - which isnt a problem, I enjoy tongue but it needs to be advertised on the menu, and also the dish was probably 60 percent onion 40 percent beef.<br/>Last was the soup, this was one of the worst soups I've had, I love me a good hot and sour soup but this was not a good one - it was tasteless and had barely any substance to it, just a watery broth.<br/>I will go back and try the spring pancake as they do look delicious but must heavily warn anyone DO NOT order off the rest of the menu unless you have seen someone else's dish.

I visited as part of another (walking) Auckland Food Tour event - this time a collection of chinese specialities on Dominion Road. I LOVE these journeys - each place we visit - the menu is largely ignored and we eat ONLY the dish or two that they are renowned for - or from their region of China. So while only a dish or two will be discussed in the reviews ..... this is the ultimate shortcut to 'best eats on a menu' .....<br/><br/>Spring Pancakes are paper thin - and a little stretchy -  and makes it very flexible and easy to fill and roll up.<br/><br/>We had a choice of fillings - the braised pork with soy sauce - which was the more familiar choice for me, so that is where I started. I shouldn't have. <br/><br/> The second dish was piled high with matchsticks of potato, eggplant and capsicum - I really didn't expect it to be as tasty as it was. I had to ask.... as there was an 'al dente' bite left in the potato but was completely cooked!  <br/><br/>The vegetables are stir-fried fast at a very high heat (so the potato keeps its crunch) and LOTS of minced fresh garlic, a little salt and a dash of soy sauce. This was a bit of a 'dark horse' dish for me - and definitely, what I will be ordering when I go back.
FlyingMonkey
I have decreased my rating from 3 to 2 and perhaps even lower. their food was quite nice and the concept was fresh too of how you wrap food in wrappings, but after eating at their restaurant, all 3 of us had stomach problems..., must be the hygiene.....makes me wonder how they cooked our food and how the ingredients were ....
