Review Ruang Thong Thai Canteen - Auckland Central

B.E.V Birds eye View
The portions smaller compared to other Raung Thong in Mt albert and it was more dear here BUT it was still very delicious and it was a nice location. I would recommend checking it out and having their options. We had Tom yum and sizzling beef and it was a yummy experience

Little Thai restaurant runs by humble Thai owner in the neighbourhood. It might look quiet when you pass by, but they get quite alot takeaway orders and the kitchen is quite busy during peak hour. Food was hit and miss sometimes, but overall quite good. I am not too sure if their kitchen extractor fan has broken down, our shirt smells so oily after the dinner. This restaurant is simply amazing beside serving authentic Thai cuisine. The best is the wait time is very short for your order you place. They have excellent customer service and the restaurant is always clean! Vicky is the young host, sweet and capable business owner! Price is very affordable too! Keep up the good work, Vicky!

Very reasonably priced meals. Excellent taste and large portion sizes. There is reasonable space to sit in the restaurant and the counter staff is very patient to explain the ingredients - we wanted rice noodles instead of wheat and they were happy to customise the recipe. Personally, I would rate their "medium" spice as medium-to-hot. Go for mild if you can't take the heat. ;)

Excellent customer service and I left my glasses there and went back to get it. The waiter kindly left it on the front desk for me. Very friendly! The food was really delicious. I ordered vegetarian curry noodle soup. The service speed was reasonably quick. I DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS RESTAURANT, WILL COME AGAIN IF NEARBY! Thank you for the wonderful food and service!

Authentic taste, good portion and reasonably price compared to other Thai food in Auckland.. went twice.. highly recommended

One of my favourites. Pad Thai and Pad See Ew😋😋 Nice place to visit if you want to taste authentic Thai food😊

You gotta try their Kai Soi Crispy Noodles! Back when I used to work in this vicinity, everyone ordered this meal and lead times became long. But worth the wait! Yum!

Came by for a lateish dinner. Went up to the counter to get a table and was given a table to choose, menus and water. The waitress was in the kitchen most of the time taking orders out but I was able to get my order taken when she was between orders. I had the seafood Kao Soi and fish cakes. The fish cakes were nice, especially with the dipping sauce. the Kao soi is similar to a laksa with a cake of crispy noodles on the side (with noodles in the soup). The broth was tasty and the crispy noodles gave a nice crunch. Prices were decent, around $20 for entree and meal.

Tasty food we went for lunch there very nice presentation

Me and Denny Setiawan decided to try Thailand food for weekend lunch, one of the famous Thai resto in Auckland. The food was delicious, we ordered lava pork as chef recommendation and get pork belly. Pork day - yummy.

The takeaway shop didn't stand out for me, so I initially didn't really want to eat here. My parents forced me to try it so just ordered pad thai. This is hands down the best thai food I've ever had. I don't really like thai food, but their pad thai and cashew chicken meals were amazing. I will definitely be coming back.

Wow, finally! I have been looking for a decent Thai place in Auckland CBD since I became an apartment dweller 6 years ago. The food is amazing, the price is amazing, the portion sizes are decent - this is hard to find in auckland city now, but RuangThong doesn’t disappoint! It’s a very basic table and chairs - so it’s not fancy, but finally somewhere worth handing over my cash for - especially if you want their takeaway option. 5 stars. Recommended for what it is, because it’s fantastic value considering it’s in the auckland CBD! Highly recommended.

Had ordered a few dishes today. The food was really tasty. But then we got digging in and only realised that there were hardly and meat in the food. Not even more than 5 small pieces of chicken fried rice let alone the pork in fresh chilli..... That was a scam

Please dont go to this place. It waste of money. Food is really flavorful bit the meat is approximately 2% . If you like your veggies you should go here coz I ordered 2 meat dishes and all I got was about 98% of vegetables and the rest meat. #dontwasteyourmoney
My favorite thai in auckland. Has some dishes like Khua Kling you don‘t easily find outside of thailand. For a take away a little bit higher priced as normal but the quality of the food makes good for it. Great and friendly staff too.
LuNa The TuNa
Nice local Thai place with really good price, curry's flavour which is nice and yummy. floor was a little sticky tho....so can not give 5 star.

Do I recommend this place oh yes! Best thai food I've had in my life the satay sauce omg amazing I asked for it medium ingot it medium spicy but not over the top that you feel a volcano in the morning
However I don't really like the Veges that much the carrots were little too crunchy and broccoli not the hugest fan but I like how they cooked it so it wasn't mush it was firm and deeeeeelicous
Update went back 10 out a 10 would recommend fish cake so good

Massaman curry lamb shank is yum... Thai Omelette is just the way I like it, Hot Basil vegetarian is average- maybe it’d be better with chicken or pork. Prices reasonable, friendly service, but parking can be a problem , certainly will be back !

Awesome traditional Thai place, verified and approved by my boyfriend, born and raised in Bangkok.

Absolutely love the pork belly and any of their noodles. The curry puffs are also good, my second favourite in Auckland (Tusk Thai on Domimion Road is still my number one).

Service is lovely.

Swift friendly service last night. Ordered the chilli jam fried rice and pork hock stew and they were both delicious. Crisp fresh vege and fluffy side rice in recyclable or reusable packaging. Good portions. Looking forward to trying other items on the menu.

This place is the BOMB! authentic , delicious , great service. One of my favourite Thai spots in Auckland without a doubt! Recommend the cashew seafood & prawn pad Thai!!
A very reasonable family run restaurant on city fringe. Taste are good and portions are reasonably generous. Good value for money. The only problem is parking.

Great service, prompt meals, great flavours. A must if you love Pad Thai and all Thai food. Have never had a bad experience here and would recommend to all
Try all the chef's recommend menu, freshly made authentically cooked, even have a photo of late beloved King on the wall what more do you ask from a Thai restaurant? Great find on Symond St, I'm happy to have such establishment operating in this neighbourhood. Love love love!

It’s a small Thai restaurant. Great for small
Groups, presentation of the food was very good, quantity of food was good, taste was good as well. I have visited this place many times just for the sizzling beef however this time the beef was to watery and salty , not sure if the cook had changed but overall still a nice place to eat.

Delicious flavorful food served quickly and with a smile. We had the chicken pad Thai and beef mussamaan, and both were superb. Menu is wide and includes pics of the dishes. We were asked whether we wanted mild, medium or hot, which was also good.

Khob Khun! Ready in minutes, rice included with the curries, delicious and large servings, generous servings of prawn in the tom yum goong. Stuck with the basic pad thai and green curry but will be back for more. The service was so friendly too!
Janine Crompton
Ordered the crispy pork with chilli basil stir fry today and it was disgusting - the pork was dry and tough and definately not crispy. Not going back there anymore.

Our team went to this lovely Thai place for lunch today, I personally also visited this place several times.

The price is cheap (around $14-16nzd pp), the food portion is contented, the plates look all appealing. I especially love the honey chicken dish (tastes more like sweet and sour).
We finished all our food at the end, very satisfying dining, will definitely keep coming back.

The reason that I don't rate a 5 star: the waitresses are all lovely, but I can get misunderstood sometimes. Also, the restaurant can be quite noisy since it's a small place with wooden floor and lots of customers. If you're looking for a quiet dining then perhaps it's not the best place to go.

Looking for yummy Thai food? Definitely, try this place. Highly recommend.

This was highly recommended by a friend and it live up to his word. You know immediately that this takeout is a goody when you open the lid. I was impressed with the definite fragrance of fresh keffir lime leaves!!! It just got better with each dish and would like to try other items on the menu. Thanks Vince 🙏

Great Thai takeaway, the portions are HUGE so if your hungry or hungover its perfect. Such good value for money. The pad Thai is really nice and comes with a lot of meat for only $11. I always get the chicken, hot spice (but its not too hot at all) I'd also rate the red curry really highly however other things I've tried haven't been as good, the chicken basil was really salty. The staff are always lovely and friendly and the food is prepared quickly.

I love this place!! 5🌟 I come here all the time, at least once or twice a week....beautiful food and outstanding service 😊😊😊 I love the chicken fried rice, chicken pad Thai, beef fried rice. The crushed cashews is so good as well... Just went there tonight and ordered a beef fried rice just to test it out was amazing and then brought a chicken fried rice.. Tomorrow I will probably be back up there lol...

Me and my friend went there for dinner on Monday night.

I had a seafood tom yum noodle soup (mild spicy) & my friend had a pork pad thai (not spicy).

The tom yum was quite nice, not spicy but also not enough sourness. However, good amount of filling. (3.8/5)
The pad thai was good as well, but somehow too sweet for us. (3.5/5)
Both portions were big enough, we even took away some leftovers.

Maybe next time should ask for more spicy level :)

Overall,
Food : 3.8/5
Service : 4/5
Ambience : 3.5/5 (they played nice songs)

Xoxo

I love their dishes for lunch, including the Pad Thai. The portions are huge! I always leave with leftovers. This is a regular lunch spot and I always enjoy it.

This place is one of my fav food places.
The food is really good. I am a huge fan of beef so I always have the beef red curry.
Thai food is hot so if you can't handle the heat just advise them.
The staff are friendly and caring. It feels like home.
The food prices are not that expensive wouldn't burn a hole in your pocket
BoomShankar
Well I ate vegetarian today. Ordered PadThai vegetarian. I am not a huge fan of Thai cuisine but it was not bad. But yeah the tofus they gave in the PadThai was weird. I didnot like the tofus at all. Left all the tofus from the plate.
The staff are very polite and friendly and would address your concerns with all ears and custom make your dish. The ambience was not so good for a cafe also the glasses were not too clean. May be they would be improving their interiors.

I walk past this place every day on my work today. Today I decided to try this place for lunch... they have really yummy pad thai and curry puff! Friendly and fast service too.
Jennifer King
Been there heaps of times! Always love the special recipe of tom yum noodles hot! However recently we didn't have good experiences! Not only the dish sizes got smaller, but the taste has changed as well. Not sure if they changed chef or owner! Disappointed !

Love this little restaurant, been here a few times. The staff is so lovely and friendly. The food is great too - recommend trying the Pad Thai :)

I came to this small Thai restaurant for lunch today and ordered a medium spicy Tom Yum noodle soup with prawns. The favour was all right, portion was pretty big, and price was reasonable.

this is my go to that takeaway joint, damn I love it. Really well priced, great healthy meals, friendly staff and great serving sizes. these my guys!

Went here for dinner in the weekend and my partner and I really enjoyed the food! The restaurant itself needs a little bit of a spruce up but looking past that they offer reasonably priced, well portioned dishes. We ordered the Cashew nuts tofu and Tofu and vegetables served on crispy noodles. Both were well portioned and quite tasty. Our favourite out of the two was definitely the Cashew nut tofu. We requested both our dishes to be medium (hot), but it tasted more like hot to us. Worth keeping in mind for next time!
Extremely good Thai place I've been to. Awesome taste, good quantity and quality as well. Liked their presentation a lot. Good value for money.
You will get 11$ off your next visit for every 10 visits :)

Ruang Thai is the best Thai takeaways in Auckland
Always great service and food!!
There are so many vegan option which I love
And it never takes longer than 15 mins to get my meal

I absolutely love this place. Everyone working here is very friendly, especially the lady at the cashier who would always cheerfully greet people & recognize their orders! Amazing! Food is great, love the homey but posh feel it gives out as seen in how the dishes are decorated. Keep it up!
Michelle Hwang
There is a small but warm Thai restaurant. Offers many kinds of both red and green curry dishes with lovely price. I prefer the green curry with chicken, tasty and satisfied serving size. Staff are also friendly.
Diner8Here
this is restaurant number 2 of 4 branches i believe, mind you branch number 1 is just around the corner on K road, unsure why 2 branches r so close to each other. Anyway had the gleen curry beef on rice and pretty standard dish with heaps of coco milk for a average dinner, dish came out quick smart on this Cute looking polka dot plate after 5 - 10 minutes did see some bean off cut ends towards end of meal.
i was only one there and ate in peace, basic interior decor and highlight was the polka dot plate and the pretty Thai hostess manning the counter .

A great new discovery for myself - been looking for a good Thai for a while and this one hasn't disappointed at all. Duck curry was very smooth and coconuty, just how I have expected it to be. We also tried Tom Yam soup and spring rolls and they were too well done and rolls not over-fried or oily. Will try other items next time and hopefully will be as good.

Best local Thai restaurant! Staff are lovely and food is amazing especially for the price! Would definitely recommend the sweet roti (like a pancake). The portions of dishes are a great size and taste really home made. My favourites are the chicken cashew dish and sizzling beef but the whole menu is tempting!

Favorite Thai restaurant in the neighborhood. Good service, clean restaurant, good food.

Must tries - pad see ew, Kau-Kling, and of course pad Thai.

Best part of it is the reasonable price and good portion sizes!

Probably my favourite Thai restaurant in Auckland. I must admit that I have some kind on emotional attachment with this place, since I visited in a couple of special occasions.

This restaurant is very small and the decoration is not great but somehow it reminded me to some of the restaurants I used to have lunch at when living in Chiang Mai. This is an authentic Thai restaurant, with Thai staff and the food being the real deal.

Prices are reasonable and the wait for food is not too long. Good place to have a casual dinner with friends or your partner or for a quick week-day lunch break.

I am addicted to their pad thai! I always order pad thai when i come here and there was a point when i had to have my pad thai fix from this place at least once every week. Unfortunately since i am a bit far from this place now i don't get to come here very often anymore. The only thing to note though is they get very busy during lunch so you have to wait about 20-30mins before your food arrives. If getting a takeaway I suggest you call first before heading there to save you some time.
VinZ
Best Pad Thai I've ever had in my life! one time I ate pad thai for lunch for the whole week, and it never bores me. unfortunately i moved job but i still miss my pad thai, might go there tomorrow. :)
Andrea
My partner and I always come here and we order the same thing everytime which is the beef sizzling! It's rich in flavour with plenty of meat and veges! The sauce is to die for!
Thefoodloverrr
We had tomyam kha and it was good, the sourish tomyum was good for my liking. Besides that, I had red curry, it was good but I have had better ones, if it was a little thicker, it would have been better. My friend ordered green curry, it was not too bad as well. The food is worth the price though.

After craving a Thai meal all day, I was pleasantly suprised when I stumbled across Ruang Thong on my walk home. As soon as I entered, I noticed how empty it was, which is such a shame considering how great the food is here.

I ordered the vegetarian green curry and a couple of the spring rolls. The curry was excellent! Perfect level of spiciness and so generous with the amount of veges. Also extremely impressed with the fact that rice doesn't cost extra here! The springs rolls were maybe a little over cooked as I found them close to being too crunchy but otherwise they very good.

The service was brilliant. I noticed the front of house staff member dealing with a customer who was being quite frustrating and she handled everything well. The food here is such good value, my entire meal coming to $13.50 - such a bargain in the city!
Margie Habana
Very good phad thai. The noodles are cooked just right. Not dry and not to much sauce. Some of the food got more vegetables in it even if what you ordered is actually meat.
Ron
Been once before and was surprised to find excellent Chicken Macadamia on the menu so I took 6 friends for dinner. All were impressed with the 7 dishes individually ordered and this all for less than $95. Helpful staff and prompt service from the kitchen too. No more will I be looking over Auckland for a great variety of quality food at sensible prices. Plenty of parking in the street behind.
Robert Thompson
Quite simply the best take-out Thai food in Auckland, at that price level as good as any Thai restaurant in Thailand. Nice staff who are very friendly and helpful. Excellent food., I totally rate it. Wish that there were more restaurants like this; doing good honest food at competitive prices. Keep up the good work.
Ella Duan
One of my favourite Thai places in Auckland. Extremely friendly staff. A lot of different dishes to choose from. I visit them regularly for over 2 years now. I have to say the quantity of the food has decreased gradually, but comparing their prices to other Thai places, they are still quite reasonable. Nice food every single time, no matter what I order. Many dishes come with lots of freshly cooked veggies, that's a real plus!

However, I also purchased the voucher and they wasn't as good as usual, I would be pissed if I were a new customer. It's real silly that you offers deals to attracts new customers but fail to impress them.

Yum, love food at Ruang Thong 2. Had array of dishes - pad thai noodle, chicken fried rice and beef sizzling (love its sauce) - with friends. Still can't understand if their prices are always that low for all that food. Homely, easy atmosphere; 2 year old given high chair and all the staff came out to fuss over her. She loved the attention and hoovered up the noodles. I could relax a bit, feast and laugh. So, yeah, time out to praise this excellent canteen style thai restaurant.

I called Ruan Thong Thai - Cuisine 2 to book for dinner as I was having deal voucher a day before last day. They refused to give booking saying they are fully booked and we have to call them 24 hours in advance so I requested them for takeaway which they refused. I then decided to book for next day which was last day for Deal Voucher and to my surprise they refused to give booking for next day too saying it's fully booked. The lady who answered the phone refused to help for booking and also refused takeaway even though contacted one day in advance. She was very rude and when asked about her name she bang disconnected phone. Totally disappointed...

Very confusing when reading these reviews as I think there are reviews for 2 different places here. Had booked for correct place but went to the Mercury plaza as described in some of the reviews. R.T.T. C. 2 is the one at 197 Symonds St NOT in Mercury plaza.
When finally at the right place they were busy and we were seated by a lovely gentleman who was a good friend trying to help out. Staff were attentive and pleasant. Food was full of flavour although felt the quantity of some of the mains were less than you would get in other places. However in saying that, prices were a bit cheaper too so give and take I guess. All in all a pleasant evening, thank you.
Juku
Very good to hear that they always only serve MSG free food. Even all their sauces of which they have about 6 or so were all free of MSG.

The food was very yummy and truly authentic. We had a curry and a dish with noodles which was both very nice. I was also surprised about the prices - a (vegetarian) main dish was only $10 (with meat only $11!)

Food came super fast - we were also the only ones in there as it was quite early, but I was still surprised how fast it was.
Lucy Chapman
I went last night with a deal voucher and was really pleased with the meal! The voucher gave us great value but actually looking at their menu, I think I would return as their pricing is very reasonable and gives a lot of choice. We had the starting platter and then ordered 2 prawn pad thais. We were very happy with them :) Service was good, staff are really friendly and I felt very welcome to be there. Will be returning :)
Eric Harding
Terrible, but my dog enjoyed it. Pad Thai is a subtle mix of tastes and textures and needs to be cooked to order. Food cooked several hours earlier or reheated just isn't good enough no matter how cheap it is. I guess you get what you pay for but there are cheaper ways of feeding the dog.
Dani
This restaurant is terrible. I mean, I'm not exactly a huge thai fan as it is but usually I like the entrées and the pad thai - from this place everything I had (including pad thai, spring roll, money bag, samosa, and a couple of bites of my partners meal) tasted like it had been cooked in sugary water. I left most of my pad thai and half of each of the entrées behind as it was just not worth eating.

Cosey wee place, with relaxed and friendly staff - our regular Go To for a quick, well priced, yummy meal. Never been disappointed.
