Review Malaysia & Singapore Cuisine - Auckland Central

Yen Kim
Very cheap and generous portion of food. Yummy delicious! The restaurant looks a bit old from outside but clean inside. Slow serving speed - not recommend to go if you only have 30 minutes to have your meal. Overall, satisfied.

Food is great here whenever I takeaway. Good servings and nice flavour for what u pay. Only reason I can’t give 5 stars is because they often do not answer their calls when I want to make an order.

This was my go to place for maylasian food. Portions were good and price reasonable. They no longer have shop here anyone know new if they have a new location ?
Michelle Hua
It looks like this location is now closed :( A real shame because they had my favourite laksa & hokkien noodles. Very generous with meat, and delicious too! Anyone know where they've moved to?

We came here for dinner as we missed Singapore food so much (I lived in SG for 8 years).. We ordered mee goreng, nasi goreng and mee rebus.. All taste good though not authentic but good.. Mee rebus was in tomato based, not the original spicy curry-like gravy but so far okay.. The auntie (duty manager) is nice and accommodating, place is clean and they cooked the food quick.. It comes with chinese tea too. We will come back again soon!

We ordered 3 dishes and they were beyond our expectations. Would highly recommend this place.

Ever since I started working around Mt Wgtn / Penrose, this place has always been my goto place for my comfort childhood foods. Favourite dishes are the Kway tiao and Chicken Laksa. This place is the only place I know of that does decent authentic Dried Pork like we used to have back in Malaysia.
Suzie S
I love their tea and food! Reminds me my childhood in Malaysia. My favourite Wahtanhor and fried quayteau are the must! Fried rice is good too! Thanks for the nice food and tea.
Adam Lopez
Relatively cheap, extremely delicious, and every dish I've tried always hits the spot!

Great authentic SE Asian takeaway good size potion and plenty meat no short cuts at this place and delicious

This place is a hidden gem 💎. The Chicken Soup and Chicken Laksa are on another level. Only $13 too...cant go wrong

Ordered Wantan Ho and Nasi Lemak with chicken rendang. Serving size was very generous( couldn't finish half) and tasted amazing and so authentic. Will definitely be back

Portion is above average, taste is just normal

This is such a Gem! If you want authentic Malaysian cuisine and friendly service, this is the place to come! The Uncle and Aunty are sooo cute as well! We ordered here before and the food is always consistently delicious! Highly recommended! 😁💪❤️

DELICIOUS food, takes me back home to malaysia for sure. Owners are so lovely and welcoming . Very authentic. Also best pork jerky in NZ. My go to place from now on. Can’t fault this place.
Diane Chen
Fantastic service and really tasty dishes. The dried meat is excellent, highly recommended.

Came here for char kway teow and fish head vermicelli both a let down. The char kway teow is tasteless and unauthentic, no chives only tiny little shrimp and bean sprout. The fish head vermicelli tasted odd.

Cheap price, but good food. Small restaurant, but comforting. Kuey Teow was yum. Authentic and tasted great. The others, such as roti canai, were not too bad.
Michael Chen
Fast service, big portions and good tasting. Great if you’re feeling hungry and want something decently priced and good. Really enjoyed their Singapore fried noodles.

Price quite cheap, some at $10 but taste so so. Ordered Prawn mee, char kway teow and rojak. Prawn mee quite diluted, char kway teow average and rojak, the peanut sauce is watery. Ambiance not the greatest, small eatery.
Munchies
Awesome lil restaurant in Ellerslie. Food was delicious. Sort of home style Malaysian food. Nothing fancy but cooked really well. The chicken curry yum, fried kway teow yum, rojak yum. Such good value for money. Very generous sized portions and cheap too.
The staff were very friendly and service was very fast considering it was reasonably busy.
Cant wait to return to try more off the menu.

Visited for lunch tried the mee goreng spicy. Very nice dish. Service was very fast probably around 5 minutes. Also tried the laksa which is so massive for a medium. That is probably on my list for next time
Ashleigh Hea
Generous portions, and really good flavours. We ordered the curry laksa and the Nyonya chicken. Only downside is the average service, but I can look past that. Malaysian approved!
Sime Cajot
Budget friendly quality food. I would recommend the Nasi Lemak and Nasi Goreng. The place is just small but clean and staff are very friendly.
Raspberry Beret
Great for a cheap and cheerful lunch. Basic decor, but quick and friendly service. Good food portions. Would recommend the Beef with Ginger!!!
Alice In New Zealand
I always come here for char kuey teow and hokkian noodles:) it is big portion for me even if i order normal size:) cheap price and kind staff:)

What this place lacks in atmosphere, it more than makes up for in food, service, and value... definitely 5 stars. Have been several times to dine-in and takeaway and I've always had wonderful friendly service. The vegetable/tofu laksa is delicious and is served as a massive portion that makes a meal for two. Very reasonably priced and still filled with flavour 👌🏻

We have eaten here for many years, they used to be in Albany and we now call in when we’re in Ellerslie - it’s consistently good for a quick, tasty good value lunch with lovely cheerful service - highly recommended

Been coming here for multiple years. The Roti Canadian is average but I go for their Singapore vermicelli noodles with Seafood. The ladies are pretty friendly and always bring me tea, even if I'm ordering take out. I work in the area and I come in for a seafood laksa in winter- so warming and an amazing comfort food. This place is reasonably priced.
Sarah
Ordered beef and lamb curries. Flavour was good but beef was very dry. The menu said chunky potato but all we got was meat and sauce. Not worth $18 each and will not return. Very disappointing compared to other Malaysian restaurants around.
Sindy Xian
Always good quality and budget food. Speedy service and good portion as well. Remember to order the spicy sauce made out of shrimp. Malaysian special.
Gerald Joseph
Good food and good service and very reasonably priced as well. The entree was reasonably sized and curry puffs delicious, the serving potions for mains can easily be two meals.

Tried this place on friend's recommendation.

We order both vegetarian and chicken laksa. The portion were very generous, but flavour was blend.

Customer Service: 6.5/10

Food: 5/10

Atmosphere: 5/10

Date: April 2017

Very very friendly staff .
Highly recommend
- hainanese chicken rice
- their nasi goreng
- Nasi lemak

Very clean and fresh food . Authentic and flavourful. 😋
I have tried their Nasi lemak more than 50 times . Literally. It's very close to where I used to work . So this was the best in the area.

I and my friend came for today and I am very sacring to see those look like little white worm in my Hainanse chicken rice plate. I asked the owner and he said that is something from chicken and did not charge this plate. But I am very disappointed on this sittuation I never had before. And for sure I never come back again.
Andrean
We come to this place and try their mee goreng and fried rice.
The food is below average and lack of flavour. The service is okay. Very disappointed with our experience in this place and will not come back again.
Mindy Song
My husband and I have been here twice now, the first time was great - cheap and tasty mee goreng and laksa! So we came back for more. The second time we were sorely disappointed. The crockery was dirty, the waitress was too busy to ever notice me, and our food was not authentic. Who puts tomatoes, pickled vegetables and cabbage in fish head noodle soup?? The Singapore fried vermicelli we received was also colourless and did not have any prawns (it had prawns in the picture). Probably not going to come back again.
Miss T
Delicious food at affordable prices. The service is quick and the food is tasty. They have very good lunch specials and give complimentary green tea. I enjoy the laksa (veggie option available) and their mee go reng. Nice place for casual dining. Authentic Malaysian food
Mini Khan
Great option right in Ellerslie! I'm a vegetarian and they are always happy to omit the meat in a nasi or laksa for me. Great flavours and very reasonably priced. Would recommend if need something warm and yummy to take home! As for dining in - it doesn't have the most amazing interior but with a few Tigers and good conversation I think you'd be fine.

Perfect place for a cheap and cheerful meal, whether it be with a group of friends or couples! Relatively small, this place is cute because it's run by husband and wife. The service is quick and decent.

We ordered the Char keuw teow and the Rojak. Both dishes were served within 5 minutes of ordering which was quite impressive considering we weren't their only customers. The dishes were both really tasty and well portioned. The Char keuw teow had a nice smokey flavour to it and lots of noodles. The Rojak was new to us - tofu, egg and potato smothered in peanut sauce with refreshing cucumber and beans sprouts with a kick of chilli. Sounds like a lot going on but it all worked well together with rice.

Overall, we really enjoyed our meal here. Prices are decent and affordable. Would definitely come back here for a quick lunch or dinner, luckily for its local!

Went here last night for dinner (15/5/2016). We got the chicken tom yum soup, dumplings, chicken laksa and chicken mee goreng. All our dishes were delishes and portion sizes were huge. Will definately go back again.

We ordered fish head noodles soup, Singapore stir fried noodles and dumplings.

The fish head noodles soup was bland and the noodles are tasteless as well. The fish was very fishy. The quantity was big but the quality wasn't there.

The Singapore stir fried noodles are on the sweet side, and its got only fish cakes as the main ingredient. I wouldn't say its nice but my husband said he'd give it a 8/10. But im the Singaporean between us so i think i know how it should taste like ;)

As for the dumplings, the dough was quite thick but its pretty soft so that's not very bad. The fillings are quite alright. Would give it a 6.5/10.

This is a small family-run kinda place so don't expect fancy-pancy stuff. I have a feeling we ordered the wrong dishes, we'll go back another time to try other dishes. Although it says its Malaysia-Singapore, i think its more Malaysian than Singapore kinda food. The food is cheap, the quantity is huge, so hopefully next time we'll have better experience with the food!

Such a great little takeaway option where the meals are decent and very cheap! I usually order the Char kuew teow which is $8.90 and my partner orders nasi goreng (not spicy) for $8.90. Such a yummy little spot to grab takeaways :)
RM
Husband pronounced beef randang as exceptional we had a noodles chicken and veg dish to complement. Both were very delicious- BYo advantage. Surroundings not upmarket but food well worth a visit! Will return soon. A little bit of tablecloths and candles say would create a better ambiance. We had shrimp one tons for entree- wonderful!

Great value for money and good service. I have been here many times to dine in and take away. Cannot go wrong here. Authentic food. No waiting.

I work close by and often come here for lunch. Personal favourites are: Beef rendang, Hainese Chicken Rice, and the Wa Tan Hor.

It's good value but I have to admit it was sad to see the price increase in the lunch special menu items though.
Keith
Very very cheap and big portions but not so tasty... had the curry noodles and fried kuay teow and mee goreng. All of them lacked fresh spices and vegetables and tasted rather bland. The presentation of the place and food wasn't great. But on a positive note, the fried dried pork was a treat as it isn't sold at many places in NZ.

PS In response to the last review by BeeQueUU, I did see a high chair available although looked a little grubby

As I work nearby I have from time to time grabbed some takeaway and probably ate here once. A friend introduced this place to me as it had a dish similar to Sri Mahoktas Fish pieces and vermillci soup which I use to rave about.. Malaysia and Singaporean is a little more down scale and comparable to the informal cafe -canteen set. A husband and wife team with a further waitress/dishhand. Note the single cook means the dishes didn't come out fast enough to warrant two waiting staff anyway. Two large tables for parties of 6-8. 4-5 smaller 2 to 4 person tables along the wall. Quite cramped and a little claustrophobic near the drinks cabinets.
No surprise we ordered the fish and vermillci this was flavoursome and enjoyable. 3.5/5 fish, (Ling is used), if it was fresh would have been nicer. Less memorable dishes but still ok were our chicken curry with roti. It isn't given spiciness options but it comes out medium. 3/5 Im sure if you ask they will tone it down a knotch.
The roti a little unsure but suspect they could be commercially made ones. They were fresh and is given the benefit of the doubt. 4/5
The pork dumplings, well the photo on the wall looked inviting but a very strong suspicion these are commercially manufactured and were ready frozen. 2/5 nothing to get excited about. finally we hit a bad deal breaker. The char kuay teow rice noodle with assorted meat smelt and tasted burnt. Ive done this many time myself burning rice noodles or egg noodles so it was clear. Either the previously cooked dish the pan or wok held was burnt and not thoroughly rewashed or the noodles were burnt but only the unburnt were served by adding additional noodles or washing the old save time. So the taste of burnt is softened but the smell is clear all of us agreed. 1/5.
Kind that given it was a cold night the lady offered us tea as the wait was long as it was Friday night. A surburban neighbourhood-standard, good selection, good patronage but cosy and average standards in the kitchen.
Child friendly rating : 1/5 no highchairs cramped tables, no kiddies menu.

Best roti in Auckland, delicious meals for $10-12. This is "cafe" menu, reasonably priced but compares well against even high-end Malaysian places!

Highlights:
- roti canai: delicious, rich flaky pastry -- a must try.
- chicken curry with roti
- Hainan chicken
- beef curry (rendang I assume)
- chicken laksa: beautiful fresh beansprouts, rich flavour, lemon zest

They also have a "restaurant" menu with high-end mains $22-28. These are more elaborate & look very interesting, but so far we've been absolutely happy just on the "cafe" menu.

Service is fast.

Very good/ or better.

Tucked away in Ellerslie, Malaysia and Singapore Cuisine offers a plethora of Chinese Malaysian/Singaporean dishes. Not the best Malaysian/Singaporean restaurant in Auckland - but it is reasonably cheap and quick if you're in a rush for lunch.

I've ordered the wat tan hor (flat rice noodles in egg gravy) and char koey teow - they are pretty tasty, but as I said - not the best in Auckland - just enough to do the job. Their lunch specials are worth checking out. At $8.90 a meal, it won't burn a hole in your pocket, that's for sure!

Great value for money!! Heaps food for so little price, I usually get enough leftover for lunch the next day. I would describe it as Malaysian food catering to non-Malaysian, not too sweet which is the way I like. The service was a bit slow when it first opened but now its fast and efficient, great for a quick bit or takeaway.
Kelvin Lui
I've been there three times and each time it is the same result, the food is salty unless they change I don't see a reason to go back

My husband and I decided to try the curry chicken and noodle dish, we enjoyed it. We noticed for a Tuesday night it was busy and it seems to be attracting a lot of people lately, we are keen to try some more different meals, it allows for customers to byo which is great as there is a wine shop across the road, meals are well priced affordable. We recommend to give it a try.

I've eaten at this place three times now (mainly because our favourite Malaysian place was closed that day) and at best, it's okay.

The flavours and combinations aren't entirely authentic: it's as if your aunt, who isn't a great cook, made dinner using store-bought pre-packaged sauces and seasonings which is okay...but quite different to having it authentically cooked at a hawker stall with a sweaty skilled chef efficiently working his wok over charcoal fuelled fire!!!

But if you're looking for a quick and okay tasting meal which fills the puku, their $9 (or was it $11?) specials are a bargain!

Service was okay too. The manager lady and man was friendly. I can't say the same for the aunty-looking chef/waitress though...

So, in short...it's okay :)

Perhaps it's okayness is simply because it sells itself as both Malaysian and Singaporean cuisine: What is Singaporean cuisine if not a healthier or more bland, depending on how you look at it, version of Malaysian food? Either way, not very exciting.

Some friends and I went for lunch and we tried different dishes as it's our first time there. I tried the fried noodles but found that the noodles are not as nice and 'crunchy' as the other malaysian cafes at Selera or KKs. Also on the way to pay the bill at the reception, my friend peep into the kitchen area and found that it was not clean. Definitely not going there any more nor would recommend any one as well.
Reuben Smith
I eat here quite often as it's close to work. The place is normally quite busy during the lunch rush. I've tried a few of the dishes and they are tasty and fresh and great value. Would recommend if you are in the area.
