Review The Gateau House - Auckland Central

Deepak Mohanraju
Sugar, Sweet and everything nice !! That’s Gateau house - This little heaven on queen street, Auckland CBD produce some of the finest gateau that are a visual treat and tastes outstanding. We recently stopped by for dessert and thoroughly enjoyed it. Highly recommend this place. I have fond memories of this place. I had ordered a gateau for my son’s first birthday a few years back - really loved it. Thanks!!

I've been shopping for all my cakes at Gateau House for years, and it's always my go-to cake shop!! The location is very convenient and the cakes are so fluffy and delicious!! I tried many different flavours of their cake and none of them ever disappointed me. I have also recommended many of my friends to get their cake here for special ocassions :))

Definitely worth the five stars. The attention to detail is impressive, the depth of flavour is deliciously intense and the staff were helpful and professional. Only downside was lack of gluten free options.
Andrew Dale
Wonderful service, excellent chocolate slice. Very rich and tasty. Perfect coffee too. Will definitely come again.

What a treat ! I got a Latte which was perfect and piping hot. The Black Forest cake was moist and delicious with the fresh cream in the layers. I also got a Strawberry Petit which is perhaps one of the nicest things I have ever eaten.

One of my favorite dessert place in Auckland. They always have excellent presentation of tasty and beautiful sweets. I especially love their Mont Blanc which is really my love because of its crispy pastry, smooth cream and chestnut filling. But I would not recommend mocha cake since it's really average.

We had the chocolate mousse cake, baked cheesecake and a coffee cake with a latte and an iced tea for my friend. I love going here with friends because its a chill place to catch up and the desserts are so pretty! The interior is not the prettiest but the beautiful and yummy desserts are so worth it. Coffee was great as well and the strawberry mousse cake was almost too pretty to eat. Service is always nice, you order at the till by the coffee machine not by the cake cabinet. They also have outdoor seating.

A tasty cake and hot tea go well together hand in hand. This is a great location to have a catch up. The place is big with many seats out in the rear of the building with a sheltered out door area which could do with a bit of work such as some music to bring a bit of life to the place. But other than that, the service was good they refilled our tea pot with out hesitation and they were friendly, cakes are delicious and there are many to try.

Best place for birthday cakes as their cakes were not too sweet and very delicious, creamy and fluffy. Staff were super friendly. It’s our regular place to grab cakes and desserts.
Mark Burgess
There are a great selection of beautifully crafted and delicious modern Asian style desserts on offer here. The green tea tiramisu in particular was fantastic. The prices are also great too.
Ej Simply
I just love their sweet stuff. Great selection of cakes should suit everyone's taste.
Howard McGuire
Had the strawberry raspberry lychee mousse, the waiter suggested it and she was spot on. It was full of flavour bright and fresh.

That classic cake shop that a tonne of kids grew up with & knew of ‘cus that’s all everyone ate. 😝 Even though there’s so many new cake places that has appeared over the yrs, this place will always be a favourite filled with sweet childhood memories. Anyways, this post ain’t actually about their cake ‘cus I’m sure the whole country knows about them. I had this beautiful matcha cake a while ago and discovered the taste of their macarons which I definitely need more of. Ok, macarons in general are just stunning but I remember this was kinda different. The filling was deliciously creamy.

I love this place! I have been to 3 branches. The service and variety is good, great value for quality. The seating area is super cute and a great place to bring children, friends, coworkers etc

Had such a pleasant experience here every time I visit, especially most recently! We got a slice of their mango fresh cream cake (an all time fave), matched with the Paris tea and it was absolutely divine. The mango cake is fresh and tasty - nice mixture of cream and flavour without it being too much of anything.

The experience was elevated by the beautiful outdoor seating area, where the natural light shines through and makes your time there just that much better! This is not only an excellent choice for dessert, but also a great place to get away from your busy lives to just wind down.

Also worth noting the service is lovely! The lady who served us was so sweet - we ordered one slice and one pot of tea to share between two, and without us having to ask, she provided us with two sets of everything, how thoughtful! On top of that, she serviced us with a great attitude and a nice smile!

Service: 10/10
Food: 9/10
Ambiance: 10/10

Purchased some desserts today (07/03 5:30ish). The lady who served us (blonde) was very unpleasant. She went up to us and asked if we wanted something and even reiterated "DO YOU WANT SOMETHING" whilst she saw my sister and I were still having a conversation. After telling her we were still deciding, she proceeds to telling us "NO FINGERS ON THE GLASS" in a very rude manner. Love the desserts here but wont be coming back for the very fact that the staff are very grumpy.

Rating 4.0. Got there late in the day, there was still a good range of cakes available, but not much bread. Got some brioche buns, a Mont Blanc & some macarons to go. Everything was yum, especially the Mont Blanc, filled with cream but not overly sweet. Service was ok, not overly quick.

Usually visit this place for last minute cake for a celebration. They are open till a reasonably late time (around 8pm I recall) to cater for your urgent need. Otherwise they provide a quiet spot to enjoy tea/coffee with a small slice of something sweet or even a couple of macarons. There are tables out towards the back too, as well as a few tables in the front of the store. Service is good, and there is also a loyalty card to purchase cake at a discount.

Super love their Tiramisu slice!
Foodloverinauckland
My go to when I’m craving cake! My favourites are the tiramisu, kumara and mango mousse. The ambience is nice, especially the outdoor area in summer. The staff are also always friendly :)
Louise
The Gateau House deliver picture-perfect desserts that were almost too pretty to eat. I loved the strawberry mousse dessert- The sponge was very light and fluffy and the mousse was creamy and flavoured perfectly by the strawberries. I also had the pleasure of trying the lychee mousse dessert which was also impressive but I would have loved more lychee flavour in the mousse.
LilianMonaghan
Best place for birthday cakes as their cakes were not too sweet and very delicious, creamy and fluffy. Staff were super friendly. It’s our regular place to grab cakes and desserts. Recommend green tea, Kumara, vanilla and chocolate flavours.
Renie
Nice place to chill, study or have a birthday! Cakes are delicious and the outdoor area is especially nice. The mango cake is my fave!
Dani
have bought a couple of cakes from here and I must say that the Black Forest Cake is by far the best one! Love how it's covered in shredded chocolate pieces and buried under it is a really soft sponge, really enjoy every time I get it.

Got a Tiramisu Log, as it was on this Month's special. The moment I first put it in my mouth I tasted heaven. The layers of cake were so soft, almost melting in my mouth and had absorbed all the coffee infusion. The mousse was not too strong not too sweat, just perfect! Would definitely get another one sometime soon when I feel like another tiramisu!

Came here and order a cake (the blueberry one) for my friend's birthday. The blueberry yogurt cake lived up to its name. it's fruity and cheesy.
From simple to fancy, there was a wide range of selection at Queen street store. Nice and helpful staffs.
Bheiya Edubalad
The place is accessible. There's so many cakes to choose from - small, large one, they even have slices available. The prices are affordable and their cake tastes delicious! Recommended 👍
Louise
I come here quite often as its one of the most accessible and consistent places in town to get a good cake! The service is always nice and the store is always dimly lit and a nice place to go to get a little coffee and cake.

Besides the cakes (my favourite is the kumara or the Matcha Chiffon), I highly recommend their cream puffs and the cheesecake.
Asianfoodie
Visited today when the weather was nice in the early afternoon. Tried the cabinet cake slices and would strongly recommend the kumara one; it is one of the nicest cakes I've tasted and suits really well with tea.

Friendly service but can be a little slow at times.
Hope 🥰
Love this place although they are on the expensive side. Cakes are always delicious and staff are generally nice. Favourite is cookies and cream cake 🍰

The service here was absolutely amazing! We were instantly attended to by a lovely lady who had amazing customer service. She was polite and kind and took our orders with ease. She delivered our food which was of amazing quality and extremely delicious. All of our drinks arrive quickly as did our food. Will definitely be coming back here! 5/5

One of my favorite dessert place in Auckland. They always have excellent presentation of tasty and beautiful sweets. I especially love their Mont Blanc which is really my love because of its crispy pastry, smooth cream and chestnut filling. But I would not recommend mocha cake since it's really average. The price is a little expensive though.

The cream puff is very nice, but the mango slice is a bit sour to me. My mom thought it was really nice and refreshing though.
Over all the cake is very nice!
Grace
Friendly helpful service, bought a drink and a slice of cake. Both were really delicious and decently priced. Great place to have a nice catch up as there is a courtyard at the back.
The Scarfoodie
Got three cakes to try, everything looked so appetising! The staff were helpful and the service was swift.

Mini baked cheese cake 2.5/5
Texture and taste was not what I expected. I anticipated a fluffy airy mousse like cheesecake but instead was met with a dense sponge that dried out the mouth a bit. It is quite a thick sponge with an egg-y taste and was heavy to eat. It also was a bit bland, there wasn’t much of a prominent flavor and I was disappointed.

Classic cheesecake 3.5/5
Wow she thicc. This was was a thick solid block of cream when I cut through it. Tart in taste, with yogurt-y accents and a super creamy texture, it definitely tingled the tastebuds the most out of the three pieces we tried. It is improved by the caramel-y base which was slightly harder than the cake itself. Overall the most unique of the three but nothing wow.

Kumura fresh cream 3.5/5
The name jus made me crave and I had high hopes. It wasn’t as sweet as I imagined, in fact is was not that sweet at all but the taste focused around the super fresh airy cream that slathered between each sponge layer. The cream worked well against the denser sponge and together they mixed into a milky concoction, however if there was less cream the elements would not have worked and the cake would’ve been to overpowering. Personally it didn’t meet the wow threshold but it was a nice treat, a simple neat fresh cream cake.

Overall I don’t think these cakes are worth the hype, I was planing on getting the strawberry tiramisu full cake, but if the classic fresh cake didn’t even wow me, I doubt the tiramisu would be spectacular. The cakes were quite basic, and they’re decent don’t get me wrong, but they just lacked uniqueness.
Britney Burgess
The cakes here are amazing but best of all the front of house knew everything about the cakes and made sure I brought the one I would enjoy most. Staff were very friendly and I would definitely come back again :)
Teresa Lee
The Gateau House is perfect for meeting up with friends to hang out or study. The little treats are awesome and there is free wifi. Additionally, the staff are always very friendly.
Ashley Johnstone
Really good presentation of the desserts and found myself loving the chocolate delight. Well- mannered staff who were friendly and I will definitely come back again :)

Great presentation and delicious desserts! Friendly service and clean and tidy store. Prices aren’t too expensive either. Love the look of the desserts. I tried the creamy strawberry mousse which was very tasty and totally instagramable, also tried their Kumara cake which was really yum.
Ebenezer
Little desserts were aesthetically pleasing, not to mention extremely delicious. Service was also very attentive toward customers and friendly :)

I have been having decadent visits to Gateau House Queen St and previously Lorne St for a few years. I travel from the suburbs and pay for parking in town to visit here, that's how highly I have rated this branch.
All branches are not equal in terms of service, atmosphere, quality of drink, so we choose this for treats. There are always so many delicious desserts, of which I can't choose a favourite, and don't mind paying the high prices for. The coffee at this branch is usually very good, not needing a sugar.

Today's visit has earned my favourite branch a downgrade of rating. The 3 stars is simply for past good times, not for today, for which I would give a 1.
We arrived at 1030, by no means early for a cafe. The staff member was courteous and polite, no problem there. Unfortunately the coffee machine had not been cycled for long enough, if at all, and the espresso was most unpleasant. My cappuccino did not have the right froth on top, too similar to a flat white.
The nail in the coffin though was the cutlery. It seems like a small thing to complain about but it made all the difference today. Rough bamboo sporks to eat fine dining desserts with? Have they lost their minds? Please return to some sort of smooth plastic or stainless steel cutlery to serve your wares. I'm sure you can get environmentally friendly plastic if you want to cut back on washing up! I hope you take on this feedback, and I will adjust my rating if the situation improves.
Thanks
Liz
The Gateau House is one of my favourites. Their Kumara cake and Classic cheesecake is the best and not too sweet (5/5). I also recommend their cookies and cream cheese log (5/5).
Karen
Amazing desserts and always a go to for birthday cakes! A little on the pricey end but you pay for what you get. There’s a cute little garden area at the back too which is good for some coffee and a little mid day dessert!

The gateau house cakes are all around Auckland and always a favourite place of mine to order birthday cakes for my family. There is a variety of cakes often on display for last minute purchases and online order available for anything special or not in store.

A personal favourite is the kumara cake, which comes in the round shape, log cake and slices available to dine in or takeaway. It is made from fresh cream and not to sweet for a nice after meal dessert or snack.

I like how the gateau house offers seating for dine in coffees and tea now and the cabinets are always packed with goodies to choose from.

Emily
Our go to for birthday cakes. Always consistent with design, flavour, size etc etc. Gateau house is a place we can always rely on to provide delicious cake. Only one i would not recommend is the chiffon cakes (pictured). They are like regular sponge cake covered in cream. No fillings etc.
Food2belly
The cakes here are divine. Light and fluffy. My all time favourite would have to be the kumura cake but can never go wrong with any of their selection. This new black forest is very light and not heavy like traditional cheesecake shop black forest .

Who doesn’t love Gateau House. We like all their cakes with exception to Opera Cake. Nearly a must for birthdays and celebrations. Their tiramisu is delicious. $56 is the standard price for all their normal sized cake. Super rich and indulgence.

My favourite is their matcha tiramisu mouse cake and their mango mouse cake! Gave the praline mouse a try, also much loved! They are always trustworthy service for birthdays and events.

My friend and I decided to go there to study and being it was my first time there. It was great, it had a nice clean environment with wonderful customer service. The desserts were delicious and we had also ordered some of their on special bakery treats. Some parts of this place is a bit pricey but they also offer dessert that are a bit more affordable. Definitely going back!

It’s shame that my first review is this.
I always loved this place and visited often until I met a rude staff.
I and my friend came to the gateau house on sunday evening for buying cakes and waiting for ordering. While we were wating, a big group of customers walked in. Then a male staff came out to help the counter. We were in a queue to be served behind one customer who was paying at the counter. But the male staff ignored us then he started asking help for the group of customers. So I walked closer to him then he finally looked at me. After I made an order, he again talked to that group of people. His first word to them was “I am sorry”.

I didn’t understand why he said sorry to them. My order didn’t take long and also these customers were not even ready to order (Because when he asked help again, they said not ready yet). I got a feeling that he thinks we cut the line. While he was serving us, he didn’t even say a single word. no hi or bye or thank you, or smile. I worked at retail before so some parts, I understand that staff sometimes not in a good mood. But he served others with a proper customer service (smile and nice words), just not to us. I almost wanted to ask him that what I did wrong to you so you gave me this attitude.

When we even finished with payment with another male staff, he was trying to pack our cake slices with some tape but that guy stopped it. So additionally thank you for that some of our cake slice falling out from the take away container. All I wanted from this place was just buying cakes and leaving. Please don’t discriminate customers.

i tried green tea tiramisu, which was very moist and not overpowered sweet. i think it is good for gift my wife and family. friendly staff too.
Nadya Carisa
The cakes here are amazinggg. First tried it when my friend got a cake for me from this shop. Ever since then I’ve always come here to celebrate my friends’ birthdays :)
Donna
I’ve literally ordered 5 of their cakes in the last month or so and they never disappoint. The green tea and fresh cream cake, the chocolate cakes and fruit cakes all taste really good! Also, their small desserts are good too and are comparable to other places like Miann and Milse.
Ankita Langa
This place is cake heaven! The deserts and cakes in the cabinet are so pretty. Lovely decor and a very soothing ambience. Tried the cheesecake which was decadent but a little too sweet for my palette.

The cakes and mousse looked great. They have some great variety in sponge and fresh cream cakes as well and these are available in slices too. Can't to try the fresh fruit cake!

Had my best friend's birthday party on Friday night and last minute I decided to surprise her with a beautiful cake that was a reasonable price. I stumbled across the gateau house on queen street on my way to the birthday and went inside, and the lady who served me was really nice and helpful and I was able to purchase this amazing mud cake! She packed it nicely in a brown box which also came with free candles. If anyone has trouble finding a last minute cake for any special occasion, I highly recommend these guys!!! everyone loved the cake and also said it's one of the best they've tasted :)
Its Me
Very nice ! I really think they are the best place to grab a cake for a reasonable price (unless you trying to get fancied up and trying to spoil your girl) they are way way better than some of the cake shops in Auckland. They look good and taste good and no matter what you get they always pack it good ! This is my go place if I'm in town and need to get a b day cake for my friends or family. (They always seem to have some cakes ready so you could still get some decent obes without pre ordering them if you forgot about the occasion lol.. then you can still ask them to write some on the cake so it can look like you planned it lol.. but if you wanna get a specific flavour one you need to preorder)
Potatomatoes
I've bought countless cakes from this place over the years. Birthday cakes, small cakes, pistachio paris brest, cookies, bread. I've never been disappointed with the cakes.
The Poor Foodie
Correct me if I’m wrong but I realised there is barely any cake/dessert place selling slices of sponge cake (at least in cbd and central akl)
When my friend and I realised that they do have a few options for sponge cakes, we went without hesitation.
We ordered Black Forest cake and blueberry yoghurt cake.
❤️: sponge cakes were really well made and were so spongy😉 Black Forest wasn’t too sweet and blueberry yoghurt cake was really strong in blueberry taste but it somehow overshadowed the yoghurt cake a bit
Price is $6.8 per piece so it’s very cheap for dessert
😑: not sure if the fridge was too cold or what but the fruit inside blueberry cake was really frozen so it was hard for the fork to poke it
And since it was frozen, the water droplets inside the fruit were frozen too so when we ate that, the texture was quite unpleasant
The fruit inside the Black Forest was alright but the cheery on top tasted so artificial
There were some parts of the Black Forest cake being really cold also but they weren’t frozen
Was gonna give 5/5 because I love sponge cake but because of the frozen fruit I would give it a 4/5 😑
Jane Cassandra Ramos
I had the Black Forest cake on my Birthday and it was amazing but I guess it had too much cream but I still loved it!
Then I had a second cake and it was the fresh cream! Damn such a pretty decor and didn’t wanna ruin it but sadly it collapsed in the box but that’s okay it was still pretty on top. Cake was so delicious and yummy but I would suggest that buying cake here maybe adjust the cream, as they will put heaps! But over all staff are amazing and I love there cake! Happy I bought my cakes here! I’m totally obsessed! Hopefully next time it will be great 😂😘
Homayra Shafiq
Really upscale desserts here, hence the prices. I ordered the blueberry yoghurt cake for a Birthday and it was BEAUTIFUL! Seriously worth every cent. Service was superb, however choices for me were a bit limited considering the fact that a lot of cakes contained gelatine or alcohol. Would love to see more vegetarian/vegan options!
Fangzhou Zhao
Extremely disappointed with the "fresh cream" cake. it was not fresh and not made with fresh cream as stated. The cream was clearly mixed with a vegetable oil mixture. We've been buying this cake for years and it's always been good. So sad to see such a good cake reduce its quality. Will not be buying again.

Was craving for fresh cream sponge cake and tried a few places nothing good. I thought this places is western style and too sweet or heavy for me, so even with 4.4 stars I never tried. Until last week( my hubby works on Queen Street and convenient for him to pick up) . It was so so so good! Cream is so fresh and creamy, can just melt in your mouth like heavy. Cake is moist, good sweetness and well combined with cream. Best cream sponge cake in town for sure!!! After that whole cake, this week I tried the chocolate mousse. Normally I don’t like chocolate cake or mousse cake, but this one wins my heart!!! It’s just so silky and smoothy, perfect balance of sweetness and bitterness. Definitely will go back more often!
Mocha
Every cake that I have tried from here has been amazingly delicious and such a treat. Definitely worth the price! The pre packaged breads and stuff that they have is also really good for on the go.
Cato Jennigje
red bean cake or tiramisu, my favorite. Didn't know they have multiple stores. worth to give 5 points. I went to one of their other store, was very hot inside, aircon off, but I understand.
Priya Dalvi-Bhoge
Wowww My hubby surprised me with Fresh fruit cake. It was extremely delicious. Best birthday cake ever. Highly recommended for fresh cream cake. It’s awesome.
Rosanne Choy
Tonight's desserts:
TIRAMISU
Mascarpone, coffee, sponge and cocoa all complimented one and another really well when stacked together in one cake. Extremely creamy and not too dense.
MANGO MOUSSE
Consisted of sponge cake. The mango cream filling really helped enhance the mango flavour of the inner sponge cake. All worked well stacked together.
COOKIES AND CREAM
Sponge cake was not too moist. Perfect for a dessert.
Mia U
Desserts to die for. Tried the triple choc mousse - perfect combo of dark, milk and white chocolate and a great way to end a night after dinner.
Annie Wilson
This store is close to their other high st one. I like to come here for a small cake and a drink. This store has a lot of seating inside so it is also a good place to catch up with friends or get work done!
Cathy Fan
My favourite cake shop here in nz!! I buy all my birthday cakes from here, and they have the best flavours and service. Recently ordered a birthday cake for my friends 18th and a few small gateau for takeaway. I think the taste of their cakes is perfect for people who don’t like really dense and thick cakes.
Emma
Haven’t tried any of their cakes but ordered a matcha latte with almond milk and it was amazing. The flavours were delicate yet pronounced and had a subtle but not overpowering sweetness. The latte was really frothy and enjoyable to drink. The ambience of this place is lovely, I’ve come here a few times now to study in their courtyard and it’s a decent study spot if you are okay with a little ambient noise such as conversion. There’s plenty of room so you don’t feel bad about taking a table for a few hours either.
Food: 4****
Service: 4****
Atmosphere: 4****
Worth it: 4****
Price range: $4.5-$12 /person

Been here for several times. They have many outlets in the city but I always come to this cafe on Queens St coz always so quiets at the backyard.
The green tea, chocolate mousse, kumara cakes are good but the black forest is so so. Coffees are great here as normally you get high standard coffees in NZ cafes. Staffs are friendly.
Kwin Dela Torre
The desserts here are amazing! I ordered the chocolate mud cake and a chocolate mousse which both were so moist and well structured, they were very delicious and rich. The prices were good for the quality in my opinion. The service was spectacular as I asked them what they suggested as a gift for my mum. They were very friendly and took their time to help me out. The place itself had a very moody feeling to it. Lights were dimmed, would be a nice location to have a date.
JJ Jenkins
Been here for the first time just recently after walking past here to go to uni throughout the past few years. Tried the Tiramisu log cake was delicious. They have a great selection of cakes and mini cakes and mousses.
Warren Retzlaff
O for Awesome. Good coffee and even better desserts. The courtyard in the back was a nice place to sit and dine. Good service too. We wanna bring the rest of the family next time.
Kathy O'Connor
We stopped in for my Birthday treat a few months back, absolutely fabulous, tasted OMG delicious and looked so so beautiful, I really can't wait to go back.
Pinny Quinlan
Just the best chocolate moose cake that we have ever had... we go there for birthdays or speical occasions... in the city there is a back private courtyard where you can enjoy your time with your friends and whanau.
Melissa Kirsten Heng
Nice cafe with yummy cakes. I got the chocolate opera cake and it was alright. The other flavours are better. I was really pleased with the coffee as it was pretty value for money. The regular coffee was hugeee
Jeffie
We came in for a lat minute birthday cake and we got a Green Tea Chiffon Gateau, it was very delicious. The service was nice and friendly. Ambience seems nice to come in relax and have a treat.

Always one of my go to places whenever I need a last minute dessert or cake. They are consistent with quality and taste. All the desserts I've tried are super rich and creamy with great presentation.

Get the chocolate mousse cake from here every time there's a special occasion. Great service and amazing cakes. Definitely recommend trying this place out. They also have a pretty good Black Forest cake
Clairine Baharrizki
I will never stop ordering the Tiramisu cake for my birthday every year, for the rest of my life, for as long as I live in Auckland. The Tiramsu cake tastes the best compared to other dessert places I have been to and your coffee tastes amazing.

The rating on this review is for the mango fresh cream cake which is bonkers. They don't sell individual slices. But it's so good I was more than happy to pay a full 40 for the whole cake.

Extremely nice setting. Deserts very well presented. Well balanced flavours. Excellent services. Courtyard is an added bonus, a bit of a way to walk from downtown :(

The Gateau house serves their cakes with class, with reasonable price. Every birthdays Of any of my family member, i buy cakes from them.
One loyal customer here! -Joan

Me and my friends come here for birthday cakes all the time. The cakes are moist and yummy. They are very good quality. The staff are nice and friendly. The seating area is nice and clean. A little on the pricier side. Other than that would 100% recommend.
CrazyCatLady_EmmaC
Love cakes from gateau house. Favorites are the opera cake, mango moose and green tea. Make sure to call them 2 days advance to order if you want cake that is medium or larger. They provide some candles and plastic knife for free which is pretty handy.

This place has a good selection of desserts that cater for everyone. I had the tiramisu and it was pretty good. Can cost you $10 serve which is a bit expensive.
Dpizzy
This place has a good selection of desserts to choose from and all the ones I tried were pretty good. It's abit expensive
I would go back but if I didn't I wouldn't care
Alyssa Abad
Tried the green tea fresh cream & kumara fresh cream. Loved it! It's a bit expensive though but you'd definitely get your money's worth. It's perfect for special occasions or when you need to treat yourself. It would also be nice if they revamp their place to make it look as classy as their cakes & signage.

Probably the best cakery in CBD with amazing selection and big variety of "cake accessories ".always good quality and exceptional service .definitely not to be missed if you have a sweet tooth !

My cousin ordered Green Tea Fresh Cream as my birthday gift.

The best thing about the cake is it is not too sweet. Macha flavour is mild as well. This means I can have huge serving without getting sated.

Everything. Is. Perfect. You almost don't want to destroy something so perfect and pretty. Coffees are great too and I love the overhead twinkley lights!!
Liksya
Staff were very smiling and accommodating.
Each cake was crafted as art. We had chocolate mousse. It was wooow!
However, some of the cakes tastes okay, we could get from a regular cake shop with lesser price but tastes better.

I had their berry yogurt cake today! I love how this place sells their cakes in slices that way you don't have to splurge on a big cake to get your sweet fix ! Their berry yogurt slice is a killer!
Polly
The cakes are so beautifully crafted and so delicious. Very friendly staff and efficient customer service. Definitely the best cakes I have ever had.
Oksana Zhang
Been here multiple times, I always have a hard time choosing what to get!
Almost too pretty to eat, the flavours are nice and rich, I just wish they would make them bigger hahaha I have a big sweet tooth and one is never enough!
Ricky Zhou
My favorite go-to place whenever I need to order a cake for any special occasion. I even go in to get a few treats for myself or my partner. Consistant and elegantly simple. Love it!
Choco
Ordered a fresh cream cake for a birthday celebration. Loved every bite of this cake, there are fresh pieces of fruit like kiwi, cherry, orange and grape on top and inside as well. Excellent customer service. They communicated well while placing the order and while collecting it. Its great i ordered a day in advance as the fresh cream cake sells really fast.
Roshan Jonah
The range of desserts you can choose from was great. The dessert I ordered tasted great. The staff were friendly and the store has good ambience.
STRADS
After lunch, we strolled down Queen Street & went for some dessert & hot coffee at the Gateau House. We had walnut coffee slice & mango petite gateau. Both were exquisite - chocolate shavings on walnut coffee slice added a balance of flavour, while mango gateau was sweet all over, including the little cute white chocolate label on top of it. (Food - 4.5/5; Service - 4/5)

P.S. We intended to visit OKO Dessert Kitchen after lunch. We were the only intended customers. The staff at the counter was playing with her phone. After a couple of minutes, "hi" she said & continued with her phone & totally ignored us. So we left without having anything. I took a photo at the door (posted at OKO); she was still seen playing with her phone.

Had the Kumara Fresh Cream Cake, so creamy but not too sweet at all, and the texture was light and soft. My friend said this was the best cake in Auckland, lol.
The only thing I don't like is the size of the cake, too small to enjoy, you'd better have two
Arushi Thapar
The Gateau House, located in the heart of the city, serves you one of the best cakes.

Tried Blackforest, Chocolate Ganache, Chocolate Delight, Chocolate Mousse and Cookie & Cream Slice. Loved all of it.

Decent seating space and quick service

Bad Experience! I submitted an order over the website asked for a few special thing but nothing to fancy just wanted strawberries in the cake and Happy birthday written on the top, and got an email to call with payment. I call to one of the numbers and the person that picked up the phone didn't really understand english, in fact answer the phone in another language... i called a different number, someone else picked up this time someone that spoke English but when i said i just wanted strawberries i was told they are to hard to come across and expensive and that they can only do peaches, which i found the most silly answer ever since you can buy strawberries anywhere at this time of the year and they are ridiculously cheap. end of story I gave up, they made it to hard, and the price of the cakes don't reflect the level of service and flexibility they offer, i was ordering an sponge cake that costs NZD105!!!!
Deen Khan
good to grab a take away slice or a full cake. staff are varied in service depending on who you get. good idea to get the loyalty card for some sweet discounts. Also if you ask them they can tell you which cakes are halal as not all of them are so please check if you are wanting a halal treat
Bella Qian
Great place for dessert lovers. They have really good cakes and drinks! My personal favourite is the green tea tiramisu but all of the cakes I've tried has been really good! Definitely worth a visit if you have a sweet tooth. It's a cute place for dates or you can just take away and indulge at home.
Stephy_NakiGirl
Had dinner elsewhere & were looking for some dessert when we stumbled across The Gateau House. It's amongst a group of shops opposite the SkyCity Metro centre so it's easy to miss it.
The cabinets are full of some delicious looking desserts - very similar to Milse or Miann. They also have some Korean type breads in baskets & a good range of treats. All food can be taken away.
Service was very good & the cafe was clean & tidy.
We chose a few desserts to try as it was so hard to decide. All were well balanced, tasty & fresh - not dry like some can be.
Will definitely visit again when next in town.
I_like_pickles
Always lovely to walk into any of the gateau houses to look at all the cakes on display.

Nice for a small treat, a dessert after dinner or for a celebration cake.

The cakes are always beautifully made and taste just as good they look
Elle
Trusty place to get a great cake last minute! The service is always great and there is a huge variety of cakes! The kumara gateau is a must try as it is their specialty cake! Delicious!
Natalie Dolan
Went to the Gateau House on Queen Street for neither the first nor last time last Tuesday night, and am pleased to say that I remain consistently impressed. Got myself the chocolate praline mousse while my partner got the chocolate ganache slice of cake, and while mine was easily the winner, his was pretty good too. Definitely a win for the amount we spent (under $13 for both). The ambiance inside is pretty great as well, with the House being surprising large and narrow. While the Gateau House isn't Milse or Miann, it is still a stand-up dessert destination on its own.
Christian
Always love this place and I even have a card collecting loyalty stamps! Their cakes are made with good quality ingredients - real cream to start with! Like other Asian cakes, their ones are not overly sweet and very pleasant to kick off two pieces. Please do try their kumera cake- I think it doesn't sound appealing but the texture and favour are amazing. Lovely place to stop for a coffee and cake
Imperius Malekith
Definitely not worth the price. Bought a slice of schwarzwälder kirschtorte, usually an amazing cake, yet here it tasted pretty average. Was also frozen inside, so it wasn't made fresh yet costed $7 for a small slice. Also had to wait ages before being served. Won't go here again.
Gee
Lovely ambiance (great place to meet up with friends), reasonably priced, and their cakes taste good as it looks. Oh, and the mini cakes/gateau i've tried aren't too sweet. Thumbs up
Tavita Milford
The design of these cakes are out of this world. The taste contributes to the great cakes. I bought a cake from there last year for a friend's birthday. The service was great.
Kim
delicious cakes, most of them, tried many of them, particularly loved the black forest and tiramisu. will give a go of their coffee next time.
Charlene Weaver
Love the birthday cakes here. The desserts and cakes are all so elegant and classic.

I highly recommend the chocolate mousse cake, however the Black Forest was quite average.
Lea Johnson
Bought a couple slices of cake here. The staff are very helpful and friendly. The cakes look so delicious! (Cant give the full rating as I bought the cakes for my friend). However, the service was great :)
Maria
I liked the design of this place since the black colour looked visually appealing. We ordered 3 petit gateau and 1 small cake. We ordered tiramisu, cookies and cream cheesecake, coffee flavoured small cakes and blackberry forest cake. The Black Forest cake tasted plain and tasted way too creamy although it looked appetising. It was slightly expensive at $6.50 or more I think. The small petit gateau cakes were way too small in my opinion and overpriced. $6.50 was too expensive for a tiny cake plus it was extremely sweet for my liking. The coffee flavoured cake was the least sweetest while the Cookies and cream cheesecake and tiramisu tasted too sweet. Again, the presentation made up for the overly sweet taste. The staff were nice and welcoming too. I would recommend coming here if you're really craving something really sweet. I personally can't handle anything too sweet.
Michelle Hwang
There is my best favorite cake store in Auckland. Unable to remember that how many cakes I have bee bought there. Always tasty and fresh. Reasonable price and friendly staff.
Lisa Kim
Fresh cream cake and chiffon cake are my favourites. There are some tables in the store though, I only pick up cakes. I wish I would sit and taste a cup of coffee here too.
Grubking
Good pastries and cakes, and that's just about it. There is of course the novelty touch and the name and that's why they ask for the money they ask for. Not much else to write about really.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Beautiful Cafe with well presented desserts!

Lovely Staff members!

The Pistachio Moose was so divine and delicious especially as a sweet and dessert! This is the first time I have bought Pistachio Moose. The only time I have ever eaten Pistachios was when it was mostly salty. The Pistachio Moose was well presented and there was berry jelly inside.

The Ice-Chocolate was Ok. Though the thing that impressed and surprised me today was the Pistachio Moose.
Mahvish Iqbal
There are many reasons why gateau house will always be my favourite go-to dessert place. Their desserts are absolutely divine (especially their chocolate ones), the presentation is equally amazing, the staff are so friendly and the prices are decent for the treats you devour! The interior decor is simple and elegant but with plenty of space to sit and enjoy their sweet delicacies. Ive been here many times and I know I will definitely be going back again!! A must try for any sweet tooth out there - I know a dessert from gateau house will never be a disappointment :)
Linh 💛
For a sweet tooth like me, this is my go-to place for eclairs and mousse, especially chocolate mousse, affordable and delicious 💓 As for cakes, I love the Green tea fresh cream cake the most!!! I'm so happy they have a bigger store on queen str now so I have a place to seat and enjoy my favourite treats 😊 Customer service is superb, whether you are in store or preorder on the phone. The only things that I don't like are the macaroons as they are a bit too sweet for me, and the beautiful sponge cakes wrapped in some jelly, good for the eyes, not the palate. Anyway, still a great dessert parlour ❤️
Daisy Hsu
If you're looking for a place to sit down & chat or study, make sure you head through to the dark corridor! I loved the area at the back, it was quiet, cool, and with an open ceiling for natural lighting. The plants on the tables were a nice tough. The iced chocolate was $6, was served quickly, and was pretty good!

With the free wifi, this will probably become one of my go-to study areas, at least during sunny days☀️

This is a first time I tried gateau house.
I tell you what u was amazed by the place.
The sweet are beautifully designed and nice taste service.
You have a different taste every bite you take.
Well done guys.
You love your desert you need to go there for sure.
Love it.
Wish could rate you guys more than 5.
Must recommend.
First of all, I like how the owners have re-vamped this place. The store is definitely more spacious now and feels like a real dessert parlour.

Tonights encounter:
It was half an hour before our movie started when I noticed this place from across the road. Straight away I knew I had to obtain one of their dessert slices as I have always had amazing experiences eating here in the past. I ordered the chocolate mousse slice to share and regretted this... As I could have literally eaten four of them... Seriously good desserts here. The girls who work here are also super nice so it's a definite win! (I also observed that this was a popular choice for takeaway desserts on Valentine's evening).

All in all, I've enjoyed dessert goods from The Gateau House for many years now and will continue to do so..
Winnie
This is my goto place for cakes for multiple occasions. Need to preorder cakes. They have a beautiful range of tiny dessert size mousse. Also available are dessert sized cakes. Another addition to the range are the mini cakes. A little smaller version of regular sized cake. They stock log cakes which can be like a dessert to share. These are simple rectangular logs of sponge cakes layered with flavours such as tiramisu, chocolate mousse, mango, tea-tree.
All of the range is absolute fresh delight.
They also have a small coffee area which I am yet to visit.
On a side table they display a variety of baked goods. Mostly asian baked goods like red bean bun, white bean and coconut bun, cookies, walnut balls. On the same table is housed a sponge cake. This is the best tea time snack ever.
Would I return: over and over
Pricewise: $35 - $60 for a cake depending upon size and flavour. Sponge cake on the side table $5. Dessert slices $9 -$12 each.

'THE' place when it comes to picking up birthday celebration cakes. I've had about 20-25 cakes from here so far and every time the taste has stayed fresh and consistent.

My favourites here are the fresh fruit cake and obviously the gateau Black Forest cake.

Staff members are always friendly and the pricing is decent considering the quality of their offerings.

They are doing a great job so two thumbs up for The Gateau House. 👍🏼👍🏼

The Gateau House is where I always go for good-looking & delicious cakes. Today I just went for coffee, and I was absolutely disappointed. I ordered a flat white and an iced latte. Flat white tasted like burned coffee. Also, I would rather grab a coffee milk from grocery store than paying $4+ for a latte at The Gateau House.. From now on I will only buy cakes from this place
Edmond Shen
The kumura fresh cream cake was awesome. A really good finisher after a good meal. Light and fluffy but enough kumura to mellow everything out. Probably one of my go to purchases at this store.

I came here yesterday and despite visiting The Gateau House many times before I've never actually eaten there. I've only been to the city one once before, I usually go to the Newmarket one to buy cake for my friend's birthdays (the Newmarket staff are really lovely).

The city staff are really friendly and acknowledge you as soon as you come and see if you want any help. They don't hover over you as you look either which is really nice because you don't feel pressured or uneasy by their presence. Once you're ready to order they're really friendly and helpful. We weren't sure on a few things and the guy who was serving us was really helpful and have good recommendations which ended up suiting us perfectly. I ordered a Green Tea and Sesame (I forgot what it was called... A gateaux??) as well as an iced green tea with fruity hints! They were really good and I enjoyed them a lot. The interior is really nice and good for coffee and catch ups. The decor creates a comfortable vibe which adds to the experience. I'll definitely be coming back sometime soon to talk and catch up with friends!

Came here yesterday for a little treat! They have awesome cakes with a variety of flavours. The cakes are presented so pretty you honestly can't decide which one to pick! It's a cute and quite place to just chill and talk or even to study! Service is nice and friendly :) would come here again

I visit the Queen street branch every month or so I seem to be frequently returning for either a slice of the Black Forrest Gateau or the Tiramisu cake and every know and then I like to devour a box of their delightful mini eclairs that are filled with custard.
Steve
Excellent service! Cakes and coffee were also great but the services received were amazing. Good job guys! Hugely recommend this place :)
Vivi S
I'm trying to cut back my morning coffee habit. Usually it's flat whites to take away on my way to work. Black coffees on weekends. On a normal day, I'd only have one coffee max, preferring green teas in the afternoon. . You see, I'm not a big coffee drinker. The biggest reason for cutting down on coffee is the cost. They add up so much to your food bill!
Lisa V
Absolutely amazing. The cakes are delicious and the new desserts they have at the city store along with the revamp of the store means 5/5. I can't even choose a favourite because they are all so good
Victoria
Grabbed a green tea latte from gateau house this morning. Was going to settle for a Starbucks (which is usually average) but decided to give these guys a shot, and glad I did.

Already sign of a winner when I noticed they used Monin Syrups (quality stuff in the coffee industry). The latte was a little too sweet for my palate, but overall quite satisfying for the cold day. I might just ask for less syrup next time as this one seems stronger than using Matcha powder. Well priced at $4.50.

Service was polite and fast, got it to takeaway, but the interior of the store is lovely. Will be coming back for a sit down in the big courtyard down the back.

Have tried the cakes before as well, all very light and fluffy (not my style, I prefer dense, rich cakes), but everything looks very pretty and well presented.
Rachel
Really admirably designed with an efficient look that matches with their products. Inside there are collections of desserts behind glass and they all appear well-made with beautiful designs. There were many amazing cakes too that looked professionally made. Their takeaway options are neat depending on what you buy. The staff place them in sweet boxes with handles and it looks like a gift. I was happy the staff were good to converse with when I ordered one of their cup mousses for $8.50. It was very sweet! Mine had a cream-like topping which tasted cheesy. The mousse was very sweetly concentrated and strong in flavour for my tastebuds. I couldn’t finish it in one go.

I like the way they make their products and one day I will definitely be visiting again.

Best cake in Auckland.
Delicious :5/5
Hospo skills :5/5
Overall :10/10
The Asian staff is very friendly .
I never perfect CAKE like this before
I love GATEAU HOUSE CAKE. .

Top quality ! If you are after great food, coffee, service, atmosphere, this place is for you. Friendly staff and great service :) The barista on in the mornings is fantastic ~ They also have great cakes for special occasions, I never go anywhere else ! 5 out of 5
Tabitha De Guzman
The cakes are really good, light and fluffy. Although I have tasted better cakes that are also more affordable. Also, cakes that contain fruits tend to be overly sour (e.g. passionfruit cake). Portion size too little for me as I love my sweets.
Wooju
Gateau House not only has cakes but since they moved to a new location (two stores up the street-the old brooklyn bar) they have expanded and have lots of seating (more like a cafe now). I love the flash modern interior and the nice courtyard at the back! which is a bit too chilly for winter but in summer its beautiful. They have amazing coffee so I enjoy going back for dessert or coffee time with friends or family. Must try their banana latte! very funky
Sam Steel
Got taken here for a surprise birthday treat and had the best cake of my life! We got a tiramisu and it was amazing. Will definitely be back after date night at the movies!
Jaya
With their recently expanded space (they now have a courtyard), I find myself coming back for more of their cakes. Almost everything I've tried are amazing. I love the Green Tea cakes, they're moist, not overly sweet and the flavour is just right. Their cakes are also great for giving as gifts. Affordable too.

Ordered cakes and took away for birthdays twice in this place. High St:Customer service on high street store was excellent although the variety offered was really limited compared to the queen street one. I really liked the tiramisu log as it's different to the typical tiramisu cake. The coffee powder topping neutralised the sweetness of the cake, which sit perfectly on top of a layer of hardened chocolate shell at the bottom of the cake. Loved it!Queen St:Tried the chocolate mousse cake here when it was on special. The chocolate mousse was really rich and a bit too sweet for me by the end of it. I wish there could be another flavour or ingredient that can make the cake a bit lighter. Might be good to incorporate fruits, i.e. Strawberries on top?
Audrey
Was gifted macaroons for my birthday :) the packaging was lovely and they have a nice array of flavours however it definitely isnt the best macaroon place out there as i thought the macaroons were only so-so
FOODFANATICJIMMY
Want great cake, coffee and sweet delights? Then Gateau house is the perfect place for you. The pricing is very generous as well I must add. Portion size is relatively small but is what you would expect from dessert specialising restaurants. Love the kumara cake and the chocolate mousse, with iced coffee as the perfect match to go along with it. Have purchased larger cakes a few times for birthdays and have always been a true blast!!! The only let down is their customer service. They seem to say 'good bye' well...but why can't they greet customers more professionally? They seemed pretty annoyed or even cant be bothered at times when serving. Improved customer service will have earned them a higher rating.
Brave Eat
I have to say they make the best cakes in auckland but they are so unfriendly. i asked a question and they looked so annoyed with me when all i asked is what filling does this cake have. My another visit really made me angry because they looked at me and judged me thinking im not going to buy anything and completely ignored me. They really need to work on customer serive.

Go to place for cakes! Best cakes in Auckland. These are my top 4 from here (in order of photos): Blueberry Yoghurt, Strawberry Mousse, Chocolate Mud & Tiramissu.

Blueberry Yoghurt: has a slight tangyness from the yoghurt and blueberry powder on top but the sponge inside counteracts this and has a wonderful creamy filling inside.

Tiramissu: Not like the original tiramissus with ladyfingers and mascarpone layers but has a layers of thin sponge with a coffee cream filling dusted with coca powder on top. Not too sweet - perfect!

Strawberry Mousse: A lovely tangy strawberry mousse on top of a thin layer of sponge topped with strawberry powder. Amazing!

Chocolate Mud: Like typical mud cakes, its a lavish and decadent mud cake with a thick layer of chocolate ganache.

You can custom order your cakes online and they open till 10 pm so the pick up time is flexible.

The personalised white chocolate messages on cakes are $2 each.

Tried the 'apple' dessert and found it surprisingly sour - but not so much that it leaves a tangy feeling afterwards. Cute, quirky decor and loved the courtyard seating, especially on a sunny day!
Nina Susilo
I always love to come to this place, great cookies and desert. All the deserts are presented well and taste good. Sometimes I just come, hang out, and spoil myself with chocolate mousse, tiramisu, or cheesecake.
Jee Espino
Was super excited to try this place out because of the new space and the courtyard at the back! Unfortunately was raining when we went. :( Chose desserts based on looks because there were no menu descriptions so was disappointed about the 'Apple' that I had as it was too sour. But would definitely go again!
Seth Blissworth Baguion
Love love love Gateau House!!! The cakes both look and taste amazing. And so do the macarons. Im glad you guys got a bigger space on Queen Street. Now I can sit down and enjoy some amazing desserts :)
Shirley Yu
The best cake I have ever had! The cream and the taste are amazing! One of them is the flower cake. It was my classmate's birthday and it was also my first time to see 11flowers on such a beautiful cake. I loved the appearance sooooo much. The other birthday cake was for my sister's birthday. The marble one was brilliant as well! Never failed to love them!
Carter Shin
very nice birthday cake and dessert was so nice
Tony Ma
They are rated as one of the best cakes in Auckland, however, the last cake I brought was dry and hard. And it was a gift as well, and I was embarrassed, since no one liked it....I'm not much of a cake guy, but I can definitely tell between good and bad...and the one I bought was like supermarket quality...

Service: 5/5
Wait time: 4/5
Environment: 5/5
Food Quality: 1/5
Food Quantity: 1/5
Price range: $10+ pp

I did not have a good experience because my Japanese cheesecake was accidentally left in the freezer and didn't taste nice when thawed, I complained to them and they apologised and offered to refund the cake, I thought that was very nice of them and so I have changed my rating to a 4. Thanks Gateau House for owning up and trying to fix your mistake :)
On another note, their mango mousse cake is really lovely and light, it's a family favourite. Also tried their Chocolate Mousse Gateau which my friends always love to order.

Good cake! My boyfriend got the heart shaped cake for my birthday and I loved it !

Good price too !
