Review China Yum Char Restaurant & Bar - Auckland Central

Didn’t know until recently this restaurant does all day yum cha instead of the usual 2 o’clock cut off time at other yum cha restaurants☝🏼. When a yum cha crazy friend’s birthday was coming up and we were planning to catch up for dinner, you know where we would be going😋. All the dim sum dishes are made to order during dinner seating at this place. Service was great and the food was delicious. Especially loved their Xiaolongbao, the broth-filled Shanghainese steamed pork dumplings (aka ‘soup dumplings’). The wrapper was thin and delicate, the pork was smooth and soft & the broth inside was amazingly fragrant❣️The art to eat this is to first create a small tear in the wrapping to let the steam out, then quickly suck the soup out before gorging the rest. Don’t burn yourself❗️ We also ordered the Egg Custard Bun - those soft and almost too-adorable-to-eat steamed piggy buns. They are so...good & my friend loved it😊. While it’s unknown which dim sum maker first had the bright idea of making these adorable buns, aren’t these just the cutest things ever❓

Great place for lunch. Usually not too busy and food comes out quickly. Great range and very delicious. Will definitely be back, the wait staff are so friendly and attentive too!

Wonderful dim sum selection, flavors and aromas. The beef tripe, chives dumplings, sticky rice (wrapped in lotus leaves "Lo Mai Gai") and beef ribs are incredible...as delicious as the food we enjoyed while living in Hong Kong. You'll love the friendly staff and definitely want to meet Shannon and Boris. Thank you China restaurant for a wonderful culinary experience.

The yum char was delicious, service was fast and friendly. The banquet meal for 2 people was $38 including wine, a plentiful selection of dishes including pork, prawn and duck.Highly recommend the dumplings, duck pancakes and ice-cream balls!

Great place for Yumcha. Everything is great cannot complaint much. Good food service is great. Rest is busy too. Hence a 5 star.

I eat here regularly with friends. I love the black sesame balls, ice cream balls, custard tarts for my desserts and there is just so much to choose from for the savoury palate. Very central position in downtown Auckland and on average costs between $20 - $25. Photo is of a custard steam bun. Another sweet treat

The turnip cake was kinda off. The rest of the food was amazing though. Would come back again and defs reccomend for anyone wanting to try Chinese yum cha. 👏

WOW...the dim sum here is on par with the dim sum we'd enjoyed in Hong Kong...we've already come here twice already within a week!

Decent chinese restaurant at dinner. Service was average.

Noodles are good. Chasiu taste great. Tom Yam could do some improvement but it still okay.

Food is delicious and well made. The salted egg dishes are fantastic and I would get them again. However, the one downside is that a lot of the dishes can be a little fatty and oily. Overall very good experience.

I am pregnant and I have eaten at this place many times, probably too many hahaha! I never had a problem with the food nor service, I've been going to that place for over 5 years and the food and service have always been great! I don't understand why people will say that the food has been bad enough to get them sick? I really hope it wasn't nothing serious. But I am genuinely surprised. I have to say that the staff and chefs have been so nice that I have had cravings of things that were not on the Menu but they have gone out of their way to make it for me. I understand when they are busy that things will take a bit longer but it is only logic as the place is full . One cannot expect the illogical. I love their food and I am happy with the service, so I guess I will continue to be their customer.

Their yum char was just average but their dinner dishes were delicious. Took my friends here and they loved it. The fish dish was tasty and we loved the lemon chicken.

We always come here on weekend morning to have yum cha. The dim sum are delicious. The porridge was specially made, which are so yummy. I like the beef porridge. The price is average level compared with other yum cha. Can’t wait to go next time.

This place is fantastic if you want yum Cha any time of day.<br/>They have a high ratio of seafood dumplings. But be ware- because of this, you can walk away 💰 Ng quite a bit for your normally affordable yum Cha experience.<br/>There is definitely better value found in the neighbouring areas - especially new market.<br/>But the food quality is good, so if you don’t mind what you pay for dumplings - then you won’t be disappointed.<br/>

If you think Yum-Char then this is place to have it. Being able to have Yum-Char for dinner here is big plus. Food tastes delicious and it’s great being able to pick from dishes rotating through the restaurant (on trolleys pushed by staff). Apart from being a little out of the CBD and no real free car parking the only downfall to this place is a lot of the staff being a bit rude and moody. But I will admit it’s probably one of the least rudest Yum-Char restaurants in town.

Went in for dinner to order off their yumcha menu, the menu was a bit dirty with dried up sauce on it. Two of the dishes I wanted were not available then which was disappointing. I ordered sticky rice, beef balls which are like minced beef, pork shiu mai (delicious) and pork ribs which were a bit hard to eat as the meat is stuck on the bone.<br/>Staff spoke limited English but were attentive.<br/>The place is pretty big and it filled up quickly for dinner.

I've been here several times. Still remember few years ago they had 30% off discount if you're dining yum char between 3 - 5 pm, however I believe this is no longer available.<br/><br/>Favorite dishes: Pork Siu Mai, Prawn Dumplings, BBQ Pork Buns, Won Ton Soup, Prawn soup, Chicken feet<br/><br/>Un-favorite dishes: All duck dishes, sweet and sour pork<br/><br/>Overall the food tastes quite nice, some dishes are quite over priced - e.g. the bok choy.

This restaurant was terrible service! Standing in front of the reception and no one come to attend us. Waste my time for waiting because they are under staff. No menu and no polite way to serve even we already sit down. We have to waiting for food cart for ages. Bad experience in this restaurant make us disappointed.

Recently been to this place on office team lunch, place has very good ambainece ,food service is really nice and unique ..I.e gueridon service ..being vegetarian we had limited options we ordered for spring rolls ..vegetable fried tofu and vegtable fried rice ,fried rice arrived after half n hour ,tofu was already prepared it was quite delecious with cucumber and penaut on top ..spring rolls was pathtic as it's so oily ..that we left without eating them ...people in non veg had dumplings which is actually quite nice as per them ..concept of icecream is really good ..with rice coating on top

Had a very poor experience here. It took way too long to get our food and we didnt get a single dish together, all came out at different times, we waited probably 20 minutes in between each dish. Customer service was terrible. When we were leaving at the end, I was told it was 'too difficult to give us a discount'. Not impressed at all.
Jewel
Last night we want some nice live seafood. So we decided to go Chinese restaurant for dinner. I like this restaurant when it’s not too busy because staff can look after and serve us well and no pressure. I came to this restaurant 3 times already within one month. We like service and food here.
Lisa Burkitt
Sadly went for lunch ,we got 1 trolley of food pass in an hour,we got told we couldnt order ,staff avoided eye contact ,they kept seating new customers ,when the resturant was totally out of control ,we left feeling frustrated and clearly hungry 😫
Kathryn Zhou
Bad service, cold dishes and no trolleys were pushed around at all. When we asked to order, we were met with frowns and growls. The dishes were way too salty and variety of dishes were limited. Would not come back again.
Minh Châu
Awful customer service, really awful, especially the girl at the receptionist, her attitude is real bad, I ordered pork rib and a bow of rice, it was around 12:45 pm, they made me wait 25 minutes for it and did not even say sorry. I did not check my order before I left, and when I opened the bag, it was chicken feet, not pork rib.Food in the restaurant are fine, but the customer service is real bad, real bad !!!!!

It used to be one of my favorite Yum Char. But might be under new management, the quality of food and service gonna to be worse and worse.  Last Sunday our family went there for Yum Char and waited at the front desk for a while without seeing any staffs can help. Nothing coming out from the Kitchen, we decided to order some food. Approx. 8 out of 10 we ordered were not available. Food was very average. When I paid my bill at front desk, the poker face lady just entered the amount into Eftpos machine and let me pay without one word. No greeting, No Thank you. Very terrible service!!!    I won't be going back again.

Terrible food! Terrible service! <br/>Just had lunch at the restaurant and was left disgusted with the quality of food. Ordered hot sauce prawns and fried rice noodles. The noodles were not cooked properly and the hot sauce prawns were served without any sauce but, with too much salt. Needless to say, the food was insipid and I could not eat the same. The manager accepted that the food was not up to the standards and the owner instructed the manager to refund the money. I must mention that the owner is a very courteous man.  I went back to the cash counter along with the manager. Met the lovely cashier Emma who had the audacity to say "You are a bad person. Do not ever return to this restaurant". Pathetic customer service! Oh! Did I mention the food took more than 30 mins? <br/>NEVER AGAIN!

Not very happy, just had lunch at China and after about 15 minutes of having yum char delivered to the table nothing else came, no-one came to tell us if they had stopped service or if we had to order from the menu, left after half an hour of just sitting, I won't be going back
Gee
Me and my friend have been wanting to try food from this establishment, entered the restaurant and we were just awkwardly standing there without anyone to assist but they were pleasant with a foreign family.<br/><br/>We ordered salt and pepper ribs and got a different one. Politely told staff member that it was not what we ordered. The manager in suit changed something on the order slip without any apologies or did not even talk to us about it. Talk about feeling unwelcomed
Charlotte Chilcott
Staff are not very helpful (especially towards NZ / European customers) not sure if this is to do with language barrier. But I have been eating yum Cha since I was born, it was my first solid food. I just feel that this place doesn’t have the same quality I am used to.

This place was surprisingly quiet when we came over for lunch at 12nn but not for long, after 10 minutes all tables are full. This was my first visit and will definitely come back to try their other dishes. We had char siu pao, chicken feet, pork ribs, pork siu mai, spinach & prawns dumpling, carrot cake, egg tart and black sesame balls. The food is good and tasty but may be on a pricey side but their location is very convenient that it will be hard to ignore to try them out.
Aimee.
This restaurant isn't like a normal yum Cha place where they bring every single dish available on carts and offer it to you. Some dishes aren't available and you have to personally order them which I thought was weird. The food itself came out fast and they had authentic Chinese dishes. It's a little pricier than other yumcha but the location is quite handy.

Have heard great things about China Yum Char, so decided to come here for dinner last night and was not disappointed! The restaurant is well staffed and they are very friendly and professional (they exceed staff in other Yum Cha places I have been to). It's a clean, modern and spacious ambience which is nice to dine in. <br/><br/>We ordered Honey Lemon Chicken, which was super delicious and crunchy. The combination fried rice was exactly what you would expect, and pork dumplings were really big. <br/><br/>The only thing for me that stopped me giving a 5, is that their BYO fee is a little high, and some dishes could be priced a little cheaper.<br/><br/>I will definitely be back to try out the Yum Cha!
Philip
Been a few times now and this used to be good but last visits the food rotation and service was very slow. Limited dishes were brought around. Had to end up ordering from kitchen and both dishes took even longer.

Came here 11 am for yum cha. Good service, decent value, great food. Highlight been the BBQ pork but all dishes are pretty good. Would definitely recommend to others.

We went to China last night before the Seinfeld show. Booked for 6.30 and when we arrived no table available even though we had booked. OK finally got seated and no one came near us for an order, green tea or water. Finally nabbed a waiter to give our order. All good until 1/2 hour had elapsed and no beer or wine or food. Hail another waiter only to be told that they had lost the order. Order again<br/>and finally after 3/4 hour receive the beer and wine but no food. An hour later still not one plate of food on the table and as the show was starting in 1/2hr drank the beer and wine and departed very<br/>hungry and furious. Absolutely outrageous to be treated this way and will never go back and recommend all friends and family to avoid at all costs.

I never expect good service from Yum Char but I always blame that at myself for lack of my own language skills. I have been here a few times and the service hasn't been great but today was particularly off-form (as it turned out they were expecting a tour bus so they must have decided to pay more mind to that than the local customers). I don't expect to be hungry in between offerings but I was starving!! As for the food, well, I cannot complain. The dim sum are beautifully flavourful and I love the ice cream balls (my favourite part of the meal). I think though that they should have sauces on the table as I found myself having to get up three times to either get my own or ask.
Rachel Hui
My favourite yum char place in Auckland. I am from Hong Kong and I am particular with my dim sum. <br/><br/>The Sui Mai, Prawn dumplings, XO sauce radish cake, Prawn spring rolls, beef rice rolls and black pepper intestine are the dishes we order each time- quality of those are consistent. I am not going to say they don't add MSG into their food, but it is definitely less because there isn't that nasty taste in my mouth and I am never thirsty after. <br/><br/>This place is clean and has a good ambience, unlike some of the other restaurants where you feel like you are being rushed all the time. <br/><br/>To improve: I would really appreciate if the dim sum lady can start wearing a mask to stop spit from potentially getting onto the food. <br/><br/>

Came here for dinner with my friends to celebrate a birthday. We ordered from the yum char menu and the dumplings were very nice!<br/><br/>I would not recommend the steamed BBQ pork buns as they were too sweet for my liking and the insides were not for lack of a better word "whole" it was a mashed mess. The fried rice was delightful.<br/><br/>The service is excellent and the waiters and waitresses were friendly and attentive, very patient for those who are only english speaking too.<br/><br/>Nice decor and looks clean and tidy. I would recommend this place to a friend

So my friends where raving about this establishment so I thought I would try it out and wow I'm glad I did with a great feeling when I walked in with the friendly service and I had the steamed dumplings and aw so tasty and nice with amazing flavours that teased my tastebuds in many ways. So now I tell people about this place and will be back
Shoulyn Singh
Been here a few times as I work only a five minute walk away but pretty good yum char! Food always seems to be quality, can be a wee bit slow with bringing your dishes that you request and get a little snippy that's the reason for it not being a five. But apart from that I love the BBQ pork buns, pan fried pork dumplings, BBQ honey pork, green beans and the long prawn spring rolls! Such a pain when you go with a bigger group and they don't allow split payments so try to get everyone to bring cash or one person foot the bill and everyone pay that person back.

I came here in the afternoon as this the only Chinese restaurant I could find in britomart. I ordered a chicken chow mein and was impressed. Their noodles were actually thin and crispy as I had asked and not the fat soft noodle 🍜 They do charge a lot more for their food in comparison to other Chinese restaurants but being the only one in the vicinity I guess they have that advantage.
Oksana Zhang
Came here with 4 of us, isn't really like your usual yum cha where the dishes come out, but then again we went when they were close to closing so it's understandable. <br/>Price-wise it's ok, not the best, I could get better quality and portions elsewhere. <br/>Food came out reasonably quick though so that was a positive. <br/>I may be back if I ever want yum cha towards the evening when they don't serve yum cha anywhere else

One of the few places in Auckland that allows yum char for dinner. Great selection of Chinese dishes. They can seat from 1-12 at a table so good for group bookings.

<br/>Pathetic service, very rude and unhygienic manager. The manager was combing her hair in the restaurant standing on the front desk, spoke extremely in a harsh way to us when we didn't like the Taro dumplings and asked us not to order it ever again . Didn't offer us any drinks menu. The sizzling beef fillet was so tough and chewy. I tried to like the food but the offensive management really put me off and spoilt my dining experience. Highly not recommended instead Blue Breeze Inn in Ponsonby is the best Chinese restaurant and amazing service.

I remember this place being much better. This visit was quite a disappointment. We ordered a range of small dishes and jasmine puerh tea. The tea they brought was a green tea I think, and tasted like tap water. The dishes were ok. When we went to pay they were having a chat behind the till and we had to wait 5 minutes just to clear the cheque. Painful, I won't be going back.

Delicious juicy dumplings. My favourite prawn dumplings. Excellent yumcha. Everything was yummy. Good siumai. Great tea. Sometimes good service, sometimes average. We like to come here after uni for a delicious snack or meal. We order the dishes since we come at off peak times.
Haha Ha
Only "fried meat&vege dumpling" is worth to try, much better than other yum cha. Other dish is just normal, especially the egg yolk custard steam bun is the worst one I've eaten.
Miah Dixon
Made a quick lunch visit here with work colleagues during the week and had a very mixed result.Whilst the food was good (loved the long prawn spring rolls!), we found it was hard to get our hands on it. Staples such as siu mai we had to wait 30 minutes for, and when trolleys or plates did come around they were few and far between. Little disappointed, as there were plenty of people there for the peak lunch hour, but not enough food to cater to everyone.<br/><br/>Final verdict: I left China Yum Char happy with the food, but only half full.
Nicky
Went for dinner on a Saturday night. I would recommend booking as we tried to come Friday and they had no availability. We ordered various yum cha dishes which were all really yummy and a friend rice. Overall I thought it was really tasty!

My favourite yum char I'm never disappointed in the food I love the fact it's a byo always my go to dinner choice before a night out on the town

A bit suspicious of the staff and their yum char cards system. We had been trying to keep track of costs as we were ordering / receiving our dishes but it's hard to know for sure as we couldn't read their markings in Chinese. I understand that this system is commonly used at every yum char restaurant but I'm glad that this time we decided to ask them to calculate the bill for us before we had finished because the number they came back with was huge and way over what we guestimated! They must have heard us disputing between ourselves and recounting the prices on the menu before a lady scuttled back for our card and returned it with a few scribbles crossed out... I'm not sure if they were adding extras before, in hopes that our group wouldn't notice with the end bill, or if it was really a genuine mistake but it really is so easy to get overcharged when you can't see what items they're writing on your card and they generally don't relay back all the items before printing the total cost on your receipt.

Went here for dinner with some friends in the weekend. Centrally located, parking isn’t the easiest (unless you want to pay top dollar in the britomart building). The restaurant is clean and tidy with a cute outdoor area. <br/><br/>We ordered between us the lemon chicken, round green beans, thai style fried tofu, vegetable fried noodle and vegetarian spring rolls. All the dishes were good and enough to feed the three of us. Star dishes were the Lemon chicken and the fried tofu. The lemon chicken was really good!! Usually you’d expect the chicken to be saturated in sauce but the chicken was crisp with a light lemon syrup that was balanced well. The tofu was really good - loved the crunch and combination with cucumber and sweet chilli sauce. <br/><br/>The service is pretty good, the staff are attentive and the food is served quickly. One of the waitresses didn’t speak much English though, but asked her manager to take care of us. He was friendly and helpful. Prices work out to be quiet reasonable when sharing dishes and is an ideal option for groups!
Food 24/7
Thursday 25Aug - Night time yumchar <br/><br/>Not a great start with the lady at counter looking down at a piece of paper and holding a finger up saying " wait a moment " . There were<br/>No other customers around and I'm not sure why other waiters couldn't seat us . <br/><br/>The other waiters and waitress were friendly and helpful, food arrived within reasonable time. My fav dish are their generous and tasty beef- tendon, pork shu mai and prawn spinach dumpling . <br/><br/>As things were looking up for this place the lady at the counter once again ruined it .She was taking forever with the person before us with their payment and did not acknowledge us at all. After waiting 10 min she finally said "wait a moment " and continued talking with the person ... Finally when i was about to pay she ran off suddenly, talking loudly to one of the staff member and came back few min later .. <br/><br/>The food and other staff member were the saving grace for this review .

We got a voucher and went there on Monday. Had dinner and came back home and went to bed about 2 hours later(No food after dinner). We had seafood noodle, seafood dimsum, etc. <br/><br/> I and my husband woke up in the middle of the night and started to vomit. We both had vomiting and diarrhea all night. My little boy didn't have much so he didn't vomit but complained headache and he didn't look good. He wasn't well last 3 days(occasionally had high fever). I immediately contact provided voucher company on next day and they said they will contact me soon.  <br/><br/>Today, I got a phone call from this restaurant manager saying that nothing wrong with their food and there is no way they can tell it is related to their food. It leaves me a question " the only way to prove this is take food from my tummy and get a test done?"<br/><br/>I explained how serious it was which put whole our family into miserable situation and I said I might report this. The manager's reply was quite shock. "Okay, thank you very much" She hang up the phone just like that. <br/><br/> I warn you guys, even if they put poison into your food, keep that in mind there is no way you can prove it. Management and customer service is unbelievably suck.

Last night's meal was an insult to yum char if you ask me. Tasteless and overpriced Chinese food. Worst thing was that half the menu was not available for us to order, disappointing us time and time again when we decided what to order. It was written on the menu that "the kitchen closes at 9.30 pm" yet at 8pm literally only 2 out of the 15 desserts or so they had on the menu "ran out". Felt like we talked to the waiter more than we did with each other, asking him "Do you have this?" The Xiao long bao which is supposed to be a dumpling delicacy which contains soup was bone dry and tasted like a regular pork dumpling from your local chinese takeaway store. We looked forward to having the Snowy durian (a durian mochi) and they said they had "ran out." Minutes later, we asked a different waiter if they had the dessert and he said they did. We were excited to see something finally go our way that night only to be let down by the fact that the mochi wasn't even wrapped up properly, making it incredibly hard to handle. This was not to mention the durian inside the mochi wasn't properly defrosted, while on the contrary, the whipped cream was closer to milk than one would imagine so. After the whole ordeal of asking if they had certain items on the menu, it made a good laugh that we memorised nearly everything on the menu and it's price... No joke. So in conclusion, never go to China for yum char during the night or risk severe disappointment. Or at any time of day if you ask me....

7 of us had dinner using Groupon Voucher for dinner last night. They charged $16.10 for a refillable pot of Chinese Tea. The pork we ordered was so tough that we couldn't eat them. Also we ordered Baked Japanese Tofu with white sauce and it really tasted and smell bad as the white sauce is actually cheese. The steam rice was really dry. Really disappointed with the dinner.
Michelle Hwang
Visited there with friend on this Friday night for Yum Char dinner. Yes, not a Yum Char lunch. There is a great place where I can enjoy Yum Char the whole day in AKL.<br/><br/>We ordered 8 items and two serve of tea for $ 48.80 in total. But I purchased one $ 20 for $40 groupon voucher before, so I just need to pay $ 8.80 more. <br/><br/>Only $28.80 for all of them, what a crazy lovely deal! All food were regular size, fresh raw materials and great taste. Staff were moving fast but still keeping very friendly to diners. <br/><br/>I like this place!
Steven Lu
Came here last night as my mate got a good voucher ($40 of food for $20), staff is generally very friendly although misunderstandings may happen if you happen to not know Chinese well or at all.<br/><br/>The food is decent, the bun dishes are filling and satisfying in general. The siu mai and shrimp dumplings are fine although they could have more substance to them. Generally overall worth going to but definitely wait till you have a voucher, it's way more worth it then.
Ryan Wong
Some of the worst yum cha I've had since I can remember. Points for late night service but food here was strange and didn't taste like proper yum cha at all. Can't recommend this place at all.
Karen Gu
My friends and I went to there for dinner. There has no durian dessert , and the porridge is also sold out. The soup dumplings has no soup, very very dry, I am sure they were made in last night. Every food is bad bad bad!! And stuffs are not friendly at all. Without patience. I wonder why this kinds of restaurant could open for a long time. Just close down.please
Frank Lin
Where do I start with this restaurant. <br/><br/>I'm a fan of Yum Char, but the food here wasn't great. The portions were decent but it tasted below average. I had the xiao long bao and spring rolls. <br/><br/>The food wasn't cheap either, it works out to around $20 per person.<br/><br/>Worst of all, the lady behind the counter was smelling her shoes which was extremely unhygienic and extremely bad manners/rude. She shouldn't be working here. <br/><br/>The restaurant had about 4 tables full when my group was there. But the service was still very slow and took 20 minutes to make something which could be made between 5-10 minutes. <br/><br/>TLDR: Go somewhere else for better Yum Char.
Adam Miller
Not the greatest yum cha. steamed whole fish was delicious. Dumpling pastry was too thick on most dumplings. Visited a few times and find it to be hit and miss
Shu Rong Tan
My experience was bad here, with poor service, lacklustre food quality. The xiao long bao did not have enough gravy, with the skin too thick. Also, after I commented on the quality of the xiao long bao, the server kept insisting that I have had 2 of the baos and refused to give me a refund. Note that they also forgot one of my order.
Jessie De Paula Baylon
Not the best food. Ordered chicken feet and siao mai with rice for lunch, i could feel the chinese wait staff having fun at me as i know dim sum is usually a snack. It was rude, i stared at them and they shut up. Will never go back.
Las Akurugoda
I have been here few times for yum char but today was the first time that I had dinner. It was reasonably busy night. The service was good and when we went on ordering the guy even told me that's too much :). Their blue cod was fresh and was cooked to perfection although it was 60 dollars. Lamb chops with black pepper sauce was just perfect to chase away the cold chills. They also have yum char to order from the menu and I would recommend this to any one who wants to try out decent Chinese cuisine
Lucia
Ok!! If you like Peking duck than this is the best place for it in Auckland. Every time I feel like Peking duck...I come here. You can also get dim sum at night...which is quite nice.
Jessica Li
The food here is pretty decent but it is just soooo pricey! Especially for the portions served. I do like this place especially its decor and ambience but i feel like it's just too expensive for the standard of food and the portion sizes
Unicorn
The food wasn't that bad. The Xiao Long Bao could have been better. The skin was a little tough and maybe it was cooked too long so there wasn't a lot of juice inside. The Siu Mai is good and that's my favorite so it's my go to dish. Definitely should invest in some Siracha or hot sauce. Don't know if the hot sauce there is hot or not.
Michael Frias
The taste of the food is not outstanding. Nonetheless, they have a wide array of food selections. Also, the crews are polite which is what I like.
Shanshan
authentic cantonese food, you will love it. this is not just a restaurant , this is the life style of cantonese people. they call this to "drink tea", they can sit there for hours , from moring to afternoon, chat with there friends.<br/>chicken claw is my must. ox tendon is good too. try some sweet dish as well, you wont be disappointed.

First visit to China Yum Char was a success. Yummy food, quick service and full of flavour. Will definitely be going back very very soon!!!!
Sheena
I've been to China Yum Char a few times! Once for dinner, and a few times for yum char. The dishes that we ordered for dinner were pretty decent! The whole family seemed to enjoy the meal. Service was good, but most of it was probably due to the fact that we could talk to and understand the wait staff perfectly fine, and there was no language barrier. <br/><br/>I've also been here with a Grabone voucher for yum char. Brought some friends along, and had quite a few dishes. They were good, quite standard yum char quality. One of the stand out dishes is the icecream balls. They. are. so. good!!!! I could eat like five plates by myself. Delicious. Will most likely be back! <br/><br/>Parking is a bit of a pain though. There are limited parks outside the restaurant and you'll have to find parking elsewhere, but its definitely difficult finding a park nearby.
Josh Law
Came here with a table of friends for Yum Cha on a Sunday avo. The frequency of the food coming out was a bit of a disappointment. Later in the sitting it almost became non existent and overall was really expensive $25 each. Food was pretty tasty (albeit a little cold). Defintely better yum cha out there.
Ellie
Had peking duck and braised pork for main last night. The duck was nicely cooked, however, I reckon they could have sliced it thinner. Braised pork was only average as the slices of pork were 80% fat, 20% meat. We ordered snowy durian and coconut jelly for dessert. I quite liked the coconut jelly but not a big fan of the snowy durian. I was expecting more durian in the snow balls but it was just cream and a tiny amount of durian. Overall, it was an average experience. I would come back if there's a grabone voucher but at full price, probably not.

Every time I go past Beach Road I wanted to try this place. Time was right with a group of friends. It's a responsibility for a zomato crazy person to guide the friends to a good place to eat. Went for Sunday lunch and this place was packed. Service was friendly. Typical yum char items kept flowing in. We specifically ordered oysters and that was too good to miss. The crab and squid were perfect too.<br/>The rice coated ice cream balls was a good variety.<br/>Must try : oyster, crab

Was a bit unsure about going here, having heard all the mixed reviews. But then was delighted by an unexpectedly all around great experience. It was the middle of a Sunday, but we got a table for our sizeable group instantly. The food was very fresh and delicious, and the servers were all super friendly and polite. Even two fussy eater kids who were with us enjoyed their desserts.<br/><br/>Overall, I can confidently recommend this place.

Good Yum Cha with amazing prawn spring rolls served in a glass (presentation could be better), but packed with big chunks of succulent prawns. <br/><br/>Other dishes are tasty and you can tell they use quality ingredients cooked by a passionate chef.<br/><br/>Not sure why a Chinese restaurant has an entrance covered in grape vines, but once you're inside the Italian vibe is replaced and you're back in China.

Didn't like it. Came here for a birthday dinner on a tuesday night, was very quiet. They started vacuuming before we'd finished. It was nearing the end of the night but given there were only two other tables, the noise was very apparent and didn't lend to the atmosphere. Wait till you've shut the doors.<br/>Food was average, ordered a meal to share and a range of yum cha items, none that were particularly good. Overpriced, probably due to being situated in Britomart.

Oh man. This place has amazing food. Went here when I was pregnant with my first child so was pretty much a hungry elephant. Was not disappointed at all. Thank you for feeding an escaped zoo animal (not one anymore thankfully) 😂

It was ok. We visited late on a weekday night so it was fairly quiet, the food and service weren't terrible, it was all middle of the road. My partner didn't like it much though and didn't think it was good value, we've definitely had better quality for dim sum and Chinese elsewhere in the city. <br/><br/>Don't think we'd make the effort to visit again unfortunately.

My second choice to go for yum cha 😊 I normally go for Jade dragon express but they close between lunch and dinner service,, so I found myself my second option 😜 <br/>Here they have more varieties to choose from the menu. My everytime pick are : chicken feet, Ha Gau, Chumei, BBQ pork bun, chives dumping, pork or beef ribs, Deep fried squid, custard bun. <br/>The chicken feet here is yummy I love it😍 <br/>But prawn dumplings (Ha Gau) pastry a bit too thick, hard and dry. <br/>they also have Lava custard bun,, I first tried it was 8years ago.. And it was very very nice. I order it every time since - to finish off my meal ☺️ (had it as my dessert cuz it's quite sweet) <br/>I have tried their mango pudding dessert, but it wasn't very good, for me.. Taste a bit weird 😰<br/>Service was good, friendly, attentive staffs 👍<br/>Good location but I think they should provide free parking for customers as well. <br/><br/>Unlike most other YumCha restaurant where only open during lunch service or close between lunch and dinner service,, HERE, they open all day long for yum cha😁😍😃😀😊. VERY GOOD!! 👍👏👏<br/><br/><br/>

Variety is there, quality a little lacking. There's not much to say except the food I feel, is catered to a wider audience rather than to cater for the high expectations of us Asian folk.Menu is pricey - and the freshness is questionable. All day yum char? Never heard of that from an authentic dim sum artist...
Tess
One of my favourite Yum Char! Shrimp spring roll is a must-have to eat served on a glass tumbler with the sweet & sour dipping sauce. Love their siomai with whole shrimp inside. When I crave for Yum Char, its my go-to place to eat!
Khoa Le
There are better Yum Char place out there but China is still pretty ok. Cha Siu Bảo was a little bit dry where as the rest was kinda oily. Service however is way better than I've had at most Yum Cha/Chinese joints. Attentive and quick!
Sungsam7
We come here often with our adult children and they are attentive when they realize hubby is ordering 3-4 of everything they bring. I wasn't too pleased with this so the next time we ordered from the menu with help from the manager on duty. Much better in terms of the wallet. Always enjoyable but it is a but pricey and gets quite noisey.
Grace Sifa
been here a few times while working in town.. it's okay.. foods a bit oily but good variety.. the price is middle range but if you like the more expensive plates you could spend $35 here easy for just yourself at lunchtime

Had few visits and enjoy the dim sum at China Yum Cha. All the dishes are resonable price and size,  and they are getting better food and service. Thank you.

Food is average but the service here is quite good compared to other city yum chars. They bring food out quickly and the attentive staff are always happy to take orders for what you've missed out on. As a bonus they serve fresh watermelon juice that pairs well with the greasier food choices. The chicken feet here are my favorite, we'll cool and flavoursome.

Been here 6 or 7 times after it converted to having an all day yum cha option. This is in addition to a good al lacarte menu. All the basic dishes for yum cha are consistently done well. I use to know the former owner (sorry crap english) so the standard seems to be maintained in recent years. Try the steamed beef balls. This is one of my favorites. Cost is higher than the normal yum cha at lunchtime only establishments so thats worth keeling in mind if you are a yum cha novice. parking is tricky so the britomart is really to only option. As a result, add another $10-$12 to your cost of your night out. Service is good here but not supreme.

Best yum cha place ever tried, everything ordered is absolutely above standard! Much higher than expectations. Thing i most love is the egg custard bun
Amiria Aperahama
Average. I ordered coriander prawn dumplings and green onion pancake. My friends ordered fried Icecream, beef balls, fried tofu and more dumplings. The restaurant wasn't busy but it took 35 minutes to get our food out. Three friends received all their mains while I was waiting along with one other. That's unacceptable. <br/>The flavor of the food was okay. I wouldn't rush back but it's central location is handy.<br/>3.5 out of 5.
Ann Chin
spacious, and not hurrying to get you out. Outdoor seating under a green though artificial vines,. Staff friendly and happy to take our photos. Food is ok, but some har gow skin stuck together and came apart. Food came too quickly, meaning they got cold. <br/>Bathroom can be improved without going past a storeroom.<br/>Off peak road parking $1 an hour on the weekend, good for CBD,
Neeraj Kumar
Definitely not the best yum cha in town. There is a lack of variety and allot of uninteresting  fried food options. A few of the dishes were served at room temperature even though they should be hot so we had to send them back. Staff were pleasant and happy to explain the dishes. Love the Ice cream balls though!

There is often a dilemma when it comes to yumcha - lazy Sunday afternoons call for a good yum cha session, but on a lazy Sunday afternoon, you don't particularly feel like rushing to your favourite yumcha haunt during peak lunch hours only to be put in a 20-minute long queue and having half the trolleys run out of the dishes you want before they come to you. China Yum Char seemed almost too good to be true - a yumcha place that's open all day, in the CBD? Sign me up.<br/><br/>So, to China Yum Char we went. The good part is - the 'all day' thing is really true. We were there at about 3pm on a Sunday - most yum cha places would have shooed us away or had half their menu missing, but not this place. Everything we wanted was available, either off the trolleys or by custom order, and the waiters were very helpful in placing our orders. It was a dream come true! Plus, the prawn dumplings were really good, freshly steamed and with translucent skins at just the right thickness and texture.<br/><br/>Unfortunately, there the good part ends, for me at least. I wasn't fond of the shao mai - I tend to prefer the more subtle versions, whereas these were very porky. The egg tarts were decent, as were the chicken feet, but neither was particularly impressive. The pork and preserved egg congee was average, and the dough stick that we ordered with it felt too heavy and doughy. And alas, the promising-sounding 'snowy durian' turned out to be filled with 90% cream and 10% durian. <br/><br/>To be fair, this is all mostly personal opinion - there wasn't anything particularly bad about the food (okay, except maybe the snowy durian, sorry), and my tastes might not be the same as the next person's. So I do think it's worth a try, especially if you happen to be craving yumcha at an odd hour. We likely wouldn't be back, though.

China Yum Char; definitely not the most creative name for a restaurant! And definitely not the best Yum Char either. We didn't book so had to wait about 15-20mins to be seated which I didn't mind. However, my problem with this restaurant was the lack of choice in dishes offered to us. When I have had Yum Char at other restaurants, there has been a merry-go-round effect: waiters going round and round offering small plates of food. This place had more of a waterslide effect: waiters bursting out from the kitchen, swooping past very fast without stopping. Well, to be fair, they did stop, but waiters didn't appear very often and when they did, the plates on offer didn't vary much. I must say though, the food that we did manage to scavenge was very good, and very fresh! The ice-cream balls we had for dessert were a wonderful discovery - think vanilla ice-cream in donut batter. Overall, I did enjoy the food we had here but have had much better Yum Char at other places so probably wouldn't go back, except to get a sneaky plate of ice-cream balls. Yes, they are that good!!!

Would recommend not going here. One of the few places around that sells shark fin on the menu.

I've frequented this restaurant over the past few years due to work events being hosted at China Yum Char. I have to say I've never been to a lot of traditional Yum Char styled restaurants, but this one was a surprise. I found the whole experience fun and tasty. Their food was amazing. Not your usual Chinese styled food although there was a lot of the "usual" dishes available. I found the staff informative and made the experience very relaxing or maybe that was the wine? Oops. Nice central location and parking available in the parking building directly opposite.

Arrive at the restaurant with a booking for three adults and two children and there is no table available. Stand around waiting for ten minutes. Lack of customer service. Slow to bring food around. Lack of variety. Quality of food is basic. We were there for half an hour. On leaving, our bill is $180+. Absolutely disgusted at the cost. A huge disappointment. We thought we'd give this restaurant a try. We will return to The Grand Harbour who far surpass in service, quality, quantity and value! My suggestion, if you see an advertisement for this restaurant, ignore it and go elsewhere!
Fleur Peps
The first time I came here I was impressed and really enjoyed the food. So I came back. It seems to be more and more disappointing each time I return though and as a result I won't be back here again. The food gets less and less impressive, lacking in flavour and seeming like it was just heated in a microwave. The staff here are INCREDIBLY rude, you can't comment on the customer service really because there is no customer service! everyone seems to communicate in either solely Mandarin or grunts. There is far better yum char elsewhere guys, go find it!
James Lee
Being Hong Kong-er , I would say this restaurant is pretty good. <br/>The Yum Cha was quite authentic. <br/>I do understand for most European it can be hard because of culture difference and probably language barrier. Yum Cha is very much Cantonese/Hong Kong culture. Even for north Chinese people, it can be confusing.<br/><br/>The downside was the 10% surcharge due to public holiday. I guess it is too much.

Am giving this place a 3 star rating due to the high price it costs - around $15 a dish then drink on top can get pricey and they have screwed up my order before. They can be a real hit and miss with quality. When the food is great you don't mind paying as is tasty but a huge let down when isn't I think it's the english barrier if you are european. Wouldn't make a effort to travel there but only if was close by and wanted something then and now<br/><br/>Update: had to rush to get something to eat in a hurry so went here to see if had good luck talk about a rip asked for beef, vegies and rice it only had beef, capsicum and onions for $16.50! disgusting and cold too
Tom Zhang
Terrible food &amp; even worse service. This would be one of the worst yum char restaurant I ever been to. The soup we ordered was cold (not even warm). Feel like a over priced over night soup. The staff there was grumpy and disinterested. We will not go back to this place ever again. We eat out all the time and this my first review on the net because I don't want others to waste their money by going to this restaurant.
Brian Castello
Worst dining experience I have ever had. Was yelled at upon arrival and seated with only a drinks menu and dinner, no yum char. Didn't get any service for 20 mind after being seated despite staring out the staff. Had to go to the counter to get yum char menu and tell them we were ready to order. Order taken and drinks arrived promptly. We received two of our six appetizers and they were good. Waited over an hour for the next ones to arrive. Had to harass wait staff for the rest. Received one more appetizer, no more. had hit around the two hour mark at this stage and multiple tables had been and gone including two large ones of 8+ people. Very disappointing considering when I had been here years ago it was awesome. I will be taking my business to grand harbour next time.
Tony Ma
Average experience, came in with a hangover and needed some yum char to pick me up.<br/><br/>This place is quite packed during weekends, and staff aren't that friendly and can annoy you at times with their attitude.<br/><br/>Other that that not too bad. Bit on the pricey side, since in CBD. But oh well.<br/><br/> Service: 3/5<br/> Wait time: 3/5<br/> Environment: 3/5<br/> Food Quality: 3/5<br/> Food Quantity: 3/5<br/> Price range: $35+ pp

I've been here twice in one week. Yes, that's how good it is. I'm not a huge fan of Yum Char but if you're going here, no doubt I'm coming with you. The Staff are just amazing, very patient, efficient and attentive. The set up of this restaurant is wonderful. Red red red red red all around. Even though you have all these little dishes of food that pass your table each minute, the total price at the end is not too bad. The food however, is gorgeous and totally worth it. Take control of your own dining experience, if you're not happy with the service or what you've got, let them know. If you're not happy with the bill, there could be two reasons why: 1. You're not worth the money spent on the food you've consumed or 2. You ate more than you can pay for. Because this place is so popular, it gets busy and some customers rate this place a lower mark because they felt 'ignored' or 'the service standard is not up to scratch' - seriously though, you're not eating the Staff, you came for the food :) Have fun with this place, take a chill pill and enjoy it.

We really enjoy yum char @ China and have been many times. There's some quite mixed reviews, but we enjoy the dumplings here and love that they do night yum char! They usually bring the trolley around but the male manager always comes and asks if there is anything we would like to order, and we like it this way as we know what we want ;) Service is always good, tea topped up, and the price is pretty average for Auckland. My favourites are the prawn and coriander dumplings, pork siu mai and the crispy roast pork and honey BBQ pork. YUM!
Joanne Woon
Do not eat here ever. There are far far better Yum Char restaurants in Auckland. Just had the most dismal overpriced ordinary food accentuated by completely indifferent uninterested staff. Did not like having all our dirty plates left on the table as the four of them wandered around, looking bored. No wonder this place was empty. Had to wave arms like an octopus to ask for dessert, no apology forthcoming, nor, indeed, any dessert, so left and grudgingly paid the overpriced bill. Thank you China 'Yum Char' for an awful experience.
Atlas Rebellon
What a rip off!!!!. I do not understand how costs of the dishes are being charged and totally agree with one of the reviewers who said the "bill was embarrassingly large for what we ate". Either that or I have been just grossly overcharged. Why can't the table card be in Chinese and English for the costs of what have been ordered be transparent to non-Chinese customers? It is very difficult for a non-Chinese customer to calculate or check the cost of the food ordered based on the table card as everything is in Chinese character. Customer service at this restaurant is also terrible. Some of the staff are very rude and unfriendly. Not recommended unless you want to feel being ripped off after paying the bills.

We had dinner yumcha, hoping that the waiters/waitresses would be pushing trolleys around with variety of food all evening (like what they do in morning yumcha). But nope, they stopped pushing the trolleys after 15 minutes we were in and we had to order the food. With no yum cha menu on the table, we were not sure what to order. The manager/supervisor seemed to be in rush to take our order.<br/><br/>The food must have had lots of oil, because we felt sick and wanted to vomit after dinner even though we drank their hot tea as well. So walking back to the car was really a challenge.<br/><br/>Desserts were awful, no flavour. <br/><br/>Service was good, not rude.<br/><br/>The uniqueness of yum cha is that the waiters/waitress going around pushing trolleys with variety of food on them, and then you choose which food you like based on what's on the trolley. <br/><br/>They should not have advertised it as dinner yumcha, but Chinese dinner.<br/><br/>Our children were put off by their first yum char experience, so no going back there.
Shivani Prasad
Worst yum char experience ever! Food was below average. They didn't have much variety. Had to ask for cutleries and sauce etc. Spring rolls were served in drinking glass with sauce in it. No smile. It seemed like they didn't care about you eating there.<br/><br/>Wouldn't go back or recommend anybody.
Yvonne Choo
Surprised to see it got 3 stars rating, it's the poorest yumcha experience my partner and I had in Auckland, we recently moved to Auckland, was recommended by lots of friends in Wellington about this place, we went there on a public holiday day, hardly seen any customers there, but ve been told that we have to leave in 40 mins time since we haven't made a booking, and the lady at the cashier wasn't keen for our business, maybe cos we are only 2 people. But we were wanting to try that place for so long, so we gave it a try, the food are not fresh, they have been sit in the warmer for at least half hour, very dry but oily, nothing special, the steam food were tasteless, the portion were small, we finished food on time, the restaurant was only quarterly full, my colleague told me they had the same experience the next day, will not go back there to waste money and time.

Been here at least 4-5 times over the last few years as whenever me and our friends want to go to yum cha, we tend to pick this one because it's one of the more well known ones and of it's convenient location.<br/><br/>This place is one of the nicer Chinese Yum char restaurants as far as decor goes, however I find that everything else is kinda average. The fact that they don't have one of my fave dishes (steamed rice noodle sheet rolls with filling) is disappointing. They get crazy busy during lunch time on weekends, and when it's like that it also gets incredibly noisy and hard to get service. You're lucky to not having to ask twice to get anything brought for you eg chilli oil. Food is pretty good, as most yum char places I've been to - however I am very partial towards all yum cha to begin with :) Price - on the expensive side compared to many other yum char restaurants in Auckland, I suspect their CBD location has something to do with that. I'll most likely dine here again, however next time I have yum char in Auckland CBD I'll probably pick another place to try, been here enough times and it doesn't really wow me anymore.
Kristine Green
My partner and I have been here twice, we have found the food to be great! Though if you don't know what you are ordering it could be hit and miss. The service is average from front desk but one server last time was lovely it was a bit expensive since we went in the evening but not too bad if you can overlook the girl at the desk
Helen Harrington
This would have to be the worst experience I have ever had at an eating establishment. Firstly, the first delivered plate of food was cold. Chicken was not cooked. Had to ask for our tea as was not delivered. Watched the waiter with his finger stuck firmly up his nostril. Had to ask for a decent sized plate as only a tiny bowl and saucer on the table. When it arrived, it was dirty so she rubbed it clean in front of us. We finished up and went to pay for our meal - expecting $60 - $70 - only to just about swallow my tongue when informed it was $106!! One dish alone cost $13. There was nothing that we had worth $13. The next lot was $10 a plate. We are talking a plate just bigger than a saucer! Was also disgusted to find the tea (which is usually free) cost $2.60 each! This place is not the once wonderful place it used to be. We will never go back. Ripped off in every way possible!
Amanda
Our family went there yesterday whilst in Auckland for the weekend. We were literally passing and the kids were hungry and so we popped in (as we love yum cha).<br/>The chicken dish was chewy and we could not eat it, the pork balls were absolutely disgusting. To be honest all the food was pretty awful and we have had better yum cha (dim sum) in Auckland - one of our favourites being the mall dim sum on Elliot street.<br/>I would not recommend anyone go there, the dishes are so old with scratches on, so are the chopsticks - hate to think how many mouths they have been in and the hot water containers that they poured hot water into the teapot with looked so old that I couldn't help think "what is leaching into the water?".<br/>Don't go - worth walking up 10 minutes to Elliot street and eating at the food court (I know, I said food court but trust me!) and have that yum cha/dim sum instead. Alternatively try anywhere else :-)
Miss Kiki
Went here last night for yum char.<br/>The chicken feet, bbq pork bun and pork and peanut dumpling was good, the rest was average.<br/>I think there are alot cheaper places that are alot tastier and impressive than China Yum Char Restaurant and Bar.<br/>The prawn spring rolls (the long thin one) is purely just novelty because of the way it is presented, tastes really bland.
Sue Shimmin
Had lunch there on a Sunday. Very busy but food came frequently and was beautiful. Unfortunately we kept saying yes when we should have rested for a while. They gave us a doggy bag to take food home in though.<br/><br/>I thought it was expensive but worth it. Maybe I just got too much food.

Been here a couple of times already but went there for dinner recently and ordered stuff off their yum char menu, there was about 8 of us and food came out quite fast and quick (although they didn't have chee cheong fun because of the time we went), have no issue with quality of food, most of it was tasty, the only things that my palate took exception too this time was medicore custard tart, and fairly average deep fried taro. Service was ok but mostly because we didn't have to deal with cranky manager when it came to paying since she was occupied with someone else :O). Food is averagely priced, easy to get parking (either free @ countdown (90mins) or at carpark(s) in front of restaurant), atmosphere is good, don't forget too make a booking if your coming for lunch though, it sometimes gets insanely full.
Julia
I like yum cha here as quite tasty and many good options to choose. however watch the ticks on the bill. My table was slightly over charged (one cheapest dish we had was ticked on the special) and we asked the lady at the counter for correction. then she called the man-ish woman and told us to deal with her. The man-ish woman aggressively replied that she has to charge us the full price according to the bill, because the staff who ticked wrongly had already gone home. WTF!!!
Duke_meko
As many of the other reviews have mentioned, the manger is very unpleasant and lacks any customer service skills, I am not quite sure why she has been there for so many years!!! My family and I have actually nick-named her dragon lady as she is always extremely rude and once watch my family and I eat for most of the meal, which made it very awkward to say the least... I would not return as I do, if it was not for the fact that the food is very good, especially their yum cha dumplings! The parking can be a bit annoying sometimes though, due to its location.
Jamini Pulyadath
Yes the lady at the counter is far from friendly but the food is fantastic. have been going to China Yum Char for over 4 years now and absolutely love it. Prefer going on weekday evenings when the place is not crowded and can enjoy a nice leisurely meal. Prawn spring rolls, string beans, deep fried squid and sticky rice are highly recommended. Food is fresh and flavoursome. Menu also has a variety of Asian desserts to offer. Overall, this is a gr8 place to dine with a big group of people though customer service has room for improvement.

First Yum Char experience, was a little overwhelmed with food just being bought to our table and not understanding the process. However food was tasty and enjoyed the experience

Used the groupy voucher deal - $20 for a $40 value.<br/><br/>Service was average could be better.<br/>Food was delicious, hot and very fresh.<br/><br/>A few areas to touch up on - <br/>Front lady comes across as blunt and has no people skills.<br/>Had order pork dumplings, rice and sweet n sour. Only received the s&amp;s dish and waited for agess for the other two. They took too long so we left, but noticed I was charged for the dumplings and the rice we didnt have. <br/><br/>Note: check your bill (=

Food was just ok, service was ok although my butt wasn't even touching the seat before they wanted our order - 35 mins from beginning to end. Home from Hong Kong yesterday and was looking forward to the same, it wasn't. A little advice .........check your bill!!
Curtis Chan
I have had better, not in Auckland mind you, the environment was ok, it staff were ok, the food was ok.<br/><br/>that's about as much as I took away from this place.<br/><br/>not the worst, but not the best either.
Sharon
We had been here a couple of times previously with the groupy vouchers and were very happy with the service, the food and the staff. So was concerned to read recent reviews about the bad service and expected the worst next time we went with our last vouchers. Well absolutely no problem. Admittedly the solemn faced woman was not there, but our service was very attentive, friendly and most pleasant. The food was hot and delicious with the 1 exception of the prawn spring rolls which have been to die for in the past, this time were a disappointment. Very greasy and not as crisp as usual. Seemed like they had been reheated. So that was shame. But other than that, I would still be happy to go back until such time as I have a bad experience. So go, give it a go, hopefully you will enjoy it as much as we have.
Joseph B
Food is fine but harsh pricing and the appalling customer service. However the setting out is nice and it has a nice mood.
Rufina Pragono
The food is absolutely beautiful! Love their yumchar! Although the friendliness is terrible, the service was quite fast. The manager is always not friendly (have been here 3 times now). But once you taste the yumchar, you can compromise the service. The price is reasonable. The regular one is $3.8, Special $4.5, extra special $5. The recommended ones are fried spring roll (long tubes in a glass), hakao (prawn n pork in a transparent flour skin) and siao may. You might also want to try the beef ribs, very delicious! Make sure you try the fried ice cream as a dessert. Better to eat in a group, minimum 3 persons, so you won't be paying too much. I usually spend $15/person for between 3 people.
John Lee
My partner and I have recently scored a deal on Groupy - $20 for $40 worth of voucher to use at China Yum Char Restaurant &amp; Bar<br/><br/>However on payment we were advised the manager of the business has decided that only 1 voucher can be used between myself and my partner. I pointed to them that the fine print clearly states "Maximum of 3 vouchers per table, use one per person." so this means myself and my partner were entitled to use 2 vouchers between us.<br/><br/>The manager as well as the staff on duty at the front desk (Dory and Maggie) were rude and refused to honor the second voucher. They said they have recently changed their Policy on vouchers. When I demanded to view the 'Policy' in question I was told that it's a 'Verbal' policy and they were unable to show me the so called policy in writing.<br/><br/>I find this highly unacceptable especially for a business whose primary purpose to advertise on Groupy is to elevate their profile and to attract new customer which in this case have failed miserably.<br/><br/>However food was good though but customer service is appalling!<br/><br/>P/s: Even their web site is broken, it redirects to a placeholder site
Sophia Slater
they over priced some dishes, deep fried tofu for $10?<br/>also they only walk around with expensive dishes...<br/>we are so not going back there and get rip off again.
Richard De Silva
Firstly it the only Chinese restaurant that does Yum Cha at night that alone is 5 stars. <br/>The Yum Cha is great like most Yum Cha places in the city. <br/>The Sea Food is fresh and the service I find average like most other Chinese restaurants. <br/>They should put all signs in English to that non speaking people can read their special menu's.<br/><br/>Other than that good Chinese food in the city.
Jesse James .
I absolutely love this place. The service is not great, in fact it is terrible (I am of mainly European descent) and find that you do tend to be looked down on for not knowing the language.<br/>However, the food is just amazing.<br/>I never ever want sweet and sour pork unless it is cooked at China. And the green beans are to die for.<br/>It is not something that you would do often, but I can't wait to go back.
Alice Tu
I came here with my husband three months ago for yum cha. The food was tasty and the atmosphere was fantastic. However, the price was a bit more expensive than many yum cha restaurants in Auckland.
Larissa Denton
Great food, hot with great variation. Lots of fresh vege dishes as well as the deep fried stuff. YUM custard tarts and the Durian Tarts were a nice change as well. A very busy restaurant with busy staff. Don't expect any chit-chat from them or much explanation of the food...not so good with the english but I don't go to Chinese restaurants for the english!! Clean toilets too..!
Courtney
This is THE BEST Yum Cha in Auckland. Great service, delicious fresh food, quick service. Especially good when you become a regular and they know what you like!
M
This place is only concerned about money-making has the worst customer service we've ever experienced! The food is average, not as good as other Chinese restaurants in the city. I wouldn't choose to go there again.<br/><br/>The first greeting we received was a lecture about how much money we made them lose by accidentally booking under two names (even after we apologised). <br/><br/>Next, as my cousin was suffering from an allergy attack and we needed a glass of iced tap water, we were told that they would have to charge us for the tap water.<br/><br/>The teapot was not filled for more a good half-hour.<br/><br/>Finally, as we questioned about a few charges on the bill, they actually made rude sarcastic comments!!

Consistent and tasty. Always know what you will get on terms of the standard of food and service. Pleasant and quiet atmosphere. Large menu with some excellent choices. Duck pancakes are superb!

It might not be the best or the cheapest, but the food is tasty, authentic, and inexpensive, and most importantly, China Restaurant is the one and only place I know of where you can yum char at night!<br/><br/>Don't wait for food to be offered to you (who wants that cold spring roll anyway?), but look at their yum char menu and order fresh specimens of what you want to eat.<br/><br/>Apart from the usual siu mai, beef balls, turnip cake, congee, etc. you can get the more modern desserts like deep-fried milk and snowy durian (balls of glutinous rice flour filled with cream and durian).<br/><br/>Unfortunately, they will sometimes not have items available, oversteam their dumplings or forget to bring you your order.<br/><br/>Note: tea is charged per person. Like all Chinese restaurants, there are many types of tea available, though they won't ask what sort you want if you are an English speaker!
Dog Eats World
China yum cha is a nice little restaurant at the bottom of town. There are plenty of seats inside and outside and would be great for large groups of people. The food is great and there is heaps to choose from. The staff have limited English but usually understand your requests :p<br/><br/>I would easily recommend this restaurant to friends or family.
