The service was great and the setting was just delightful. I really enjoyed the tofu dinner set. So much yummy fresh food.

Great restaurant to dine out. The menu is kind mixing of Korean and Japanese food. The fried chicken was great. The food portion was larger than I expected. We two had to take away almost half of the food we ordered. The price was reasonable. Recommend to people who want to try both Korean and Japanese food at the same time.

Food quality is very good. Appreciate how the chef went to our table, after food was delivered, to ask if the saltiness is to our liking? Pricing is a little bit expensive than usual.

We decided to go somewhere closer than going to town and it did not disappoint. Lovely waitress, nice food and a good atmosphere. My picky 3 year old enjoyed the sushi and Katsu chicken. We will be visiting again :)

A nice hidden gem. Their fried chicken is really good. Yum Yum prawn is on a salty side. Volcano rolls presentation is 10/10 but the taste is 4.5 or 5 out of 10.

Had lunch here. We had the chicken karaage with citron ponzu sauce, chicken paitan ramen and chicken katsu nabe. Everything was so delicious. The citron ponzu sauce was a nice change to the usual Mayo. Good portions for the price.

Great food with good service. One of my favourite Japanese restaurants in Auckland. Bit pricy though

Good food, nice ambience, service is average but overall worth a visit if looking for some Japanese food out East. With regards to a previous review by Ivan, we witnessed their second visit and would say their review is a bit unfair and unjustified. Definitely no racism seen. We had arrived just after 7pm ourselves but we had the courtesy to ask the staff if they could take us in given the time and no booking made. I would suggest you either book or come earlier if wanting to genuinely try the place.

Loved our meal and service tonight. Volcano Roll was delish! Looking forward to our next visit šŸ¤—

Good taste and good for family gathering dinner place. Back in here again (18/05/2021). Still good place for dinner. But have to be patience with the food service. šŸ˜…

Our go-to restaurant after Sunday mass if we feel like having Japanese food for lunch. Great-tasting food & friendly staff.

Chicken Teriyaki bento is good. Recommended šŸ‘

Been recently exploring the Korean fare in the East Tamaki area and stumbled on this little gem of a Japanese restaurant that has a Japanese menu but is run by Korean owners. They are right next to a large Korean supermarket, another Korean restaurant and a bubble tea place so it makes sense that they offer a slightly different menu.

Liked:
1. Good variety of dishes on their menu.

2. Recently caught on to eating yum yum prawns so ordered those - delicious. Good sushi rolls and a lot of people were ordering their ala carte bento sets but we opted to share a few small things.

3. Sashimi was fresh and they had a nice drinks menu in case you want a warm or cold sake with a nice selection of Japanese beers.

A good go to if you are in the area.
Angie
We have ordered 5 dishes but just took 2 photos. The salmon roll which is very good, my son loved it. The dishes are quite salty, i drink a lots of water afterward.

my family and I had a disappointing experience. Our lunch meals were served in small portion (especially the meat). I understand this might be due to them cutting down food-cost as a result of covid19-lockdown, but this was ridiculous. we should get what we pay for, and for $18 per meal, it was not worth it.

Family friendly! This is a must try for deliciously simple.food with fantastic service. We will be back again very soon!!

My wife and I have been coming here for years and never had a bad experience. Great food and staff.

Dined out on a weekday straight after work. Didn't realize that there are plenty of places to eat out this way.

We were the only customers in the dining area. A few did come inside during the time we were there, but my guess is that they came to pick up their takeaways.

Ordered miso ramen, teriyaki chicken with seaweed salad and renkon chips for starters. Renkon chips were as thin and crisp as they usually are. Seaweed salad had a nice sauce. The miso ramen came in a huge bowl and was quite satisfying. The teriyaki chicken? My companion said it was okay.

Food was average, but what I liked about the place was the mellow music played in the background - it made the dining experience pleasant.

Came for dinner tonight with our son. Awesome menu with plenty to choose from including lots of vegetarian options. Good meals, good size and value for money. We did note the sashimi wasnt as fresh as we would have liked. $60 for 2 people is adequate if you are getting the bento boxes, though we opted for an array of smaller dishes and spent overall $100 with no alcohol. We enjoyed our meal and are likely to be back :)

Came at short notice. Restaurant had a few diners. food and service average- we both agreed we woudnt be in a hurry to return. Had a dinner box and the pork belly.

Love this place and their staff. I had their Stir beef Bento and my mum had the vegetarian BentošŸ± The vegetarian one was amazingā¤ļø Their tempura was delicious, and the tofu was with a sweet sauce. The staff was very nice and friendly. Will come back very soon. ā¤ļø

Great food and fast service. The tempura was nice and crisp and everything else was delicious. Reasonable price for lunch. Nice atmosphere.

One of my favourite go to dine places! The price are pretty decent and everything taste delicious. The staffs are very friendly too, and the atmosphere is great too. Would recommend to book here if you are thinking of coming here, they do get busy at times šŸ¤—

Great ambience. Calm & cool, perfect authentic Japanese environment. food was yummy & delicious. Great place for a Friday office lunch. Can't wait to explore more of the menu

Never come across a restaurant owner/manager/chef who is as arrogant as this one at Mui. Two of us waited a whole 45 minutes for simple dinner sets where as large group that came 30 mins after us got served before us. Waitress says large group gets priority. Complained to the manager about the wait, he basically brushed us off , was unapologetic at all and said to us "whatever, I don't care". Should be negative rating for this place. He's obviously not been educated about customer service before.

Been here a few times, the food is always good. The service and staff are friendly and the food is presented neatly. Itā€™s a nice place to go with families and friends for lunches

Food was great, been dining in here since 2014. Customer service was friendly but the prices have gone up and food quality has gone slightly down. Will come back to give it another chance.

Lunch review (Came back)
Paid around $45 approx for one katsu don set ($18), a four piece gyoza set - deep pan fried ($10) and one teriyaki bento. Customer service wise was pretty good, and self service stations were clean and provided any utensils we would need/water & tea. I took my parents out for lunch and the ambience, music and time the food was served was good. They were impressed by the quality of the food and the way it was presented. It was worth the price in our opinion. The food was delicious and has improved
- The gyoza came first and as we ate it, I felt as if this was one of the most authentic tasting gyoza I have eaten, it was very good.
- For the set the pork was served in a bowl that was kept warm by fire, served with rice, salad, a small dessert of a vanilla type/custard pudding (which was unique and delicious to include), sauce and sushi.
- For the bento, it included rice, miso soup, salad with sauce, teriyaki chicken and fried chicken with a unique tasting sauce on the side of the small bowl and sushi.
Overall we enjoyed our lunch experience here, we used to be old customers before the new owner and I am still loving the food.
Rob Lam
Underrated place. The portion sizes are quite generous and photos do not do justice whatsoever. Ordered the chicken box and mixed tempura, very generous portion sizes. However, not full on cuisine as the place is sort of like korean infused (recognised a korean marinade used on the chicken) but still good. Came tonight on a Wednesday and was very quiet. Will be back!

The worst thing about this place is the service. The entire restaurant was serviced but one waiter who obviously couldn't cope with the crowd. We waited quite long for order to be taken. We could see our food at the kitchen counter for ten minutes before the waiter had a chance to bring them over. But then he forgotten our rice. I had to walk over to the counter to pick up my own rice. In terms of the Japanese food it was not authentic. This is the first time I see unagi chopped up into cubes to be cooked. And my udon was served in a cast iron hotpot with candle still burning under the pot. That means within five minutes my udon has become overcooked. I requested for my pot flame to be extinguished. Food was really underwhelming.

I tried Japanese food for the first time here and since then it has become our go to place for Japanese food. We usually order the Bento-Box and they are yum! The staff is polite & friendly, the service is fast.

Really bad service. We went into the restaurant and got no service at all. The waiter just ignored us for almost half an hour. After I waved to him, he noticed us and still decided to serve other tables. I canā€™t rate any food here because we didnā€™t get any. Terrible service, I wish I could give 0 or negative stars here.
Samantha Gemmell
First time trying the place and it was a good experience! Service is quick and friendly, we ordered the spicy karate chicken, sashimi and nigiri set, volcano roll, beef tataki, and the volcano roll. Sashimi was lovely and fresh although they ran out of tuna at the time so we had to swap it for gyoza, I loved the volcano roll with the sprinkled slices of red onion that added a burst of flavour to the dish. Karage was nice but could have been a bit hotter in temperature and juicer. I wasnā€™t sure about the tofu dish that we got, it had some kind of orange syrup on top of it and just wasnā€™t to my tastes. Also very mushy in the inside it would have tasted better if it was smaller pieces and crispier on the outside. Overall really lovely staff and nice atmosphere :)

Iā€™ve been here 3 times in the past week for dinner and Iā€™ve loved it every time! The staff are super friendly, always have your attention and even give you complimentary items from the menu.. love it!

The beef tataki is a great starter, so fresh and flavourful.
The bento box/box dishes are ideal if youā€™re quite hungry and feeling like a bit of everything, Iā€™ve had the salmon box which was so perfect as I was feeling really hungry and couldnā€™t decide between salmon or chicken karaage but this box came with both!

Definitely reasonably priced here for the food you get especially. Food comes out quite quick too which is always a bonus. Overall a great experience and will definitely continue to come back and try everything on the menu šŸ˜Š

This is one of my favourite places to go for lunch - it is quiet, tucked away but delicious!! I love ordering their tofu bento bowls (around $9-11 I think) as it is so affordable and comes with just the right amount to fill you up. I love this place and would recommend this to anyone who likes Japanese cuisine.
Alice In New Zealand
I have been here for nigiri:) it was good. I was hungry so it wasnā€™t enough haha:) plating was great. It was my first time to drink sake! Was amazing with nigiri:) chef recommended the sake as we asked for cold sake:)

Always drove past this place but never stopped by. Finally I visited last night with my friend. Great place with delicious food. Environment was clean and not noisey like some other Asian restaurants. Staff were polite and prompt service. I would highly recommend his place. Prices are okay, itā€™s what I expected. Overall I enjoyed eating here. Thank you.

Mui is a Japanese restaurant run by Koreans. Japanese tea or water is self-service. I had a deluxe beef lunch box & my wife had chicken katsu nabe. My lunch box was rather disappointing - beef was not even warm & very tough; the chicken was absolutely bland. My wife also complained about the chicken nabe being too sweet. The little cup which looked like Chawanmushi, but in fact was a sweet custard. (My third photo shows this little cup & the overly thin Japanese sushi.)
(Food - 2/5; Service - 2.5/5; Ambience - 3/5)
Visited on 15 Apr 2018

I've had better but the place is really nice and clean. You better put reservation on the weekend or you are going to ask to leave before your food finished. The food is nice, although I thought it was lack of variety.

Nice ambience
Food is petty good and basic
Dinner menu is more expensive so I recommend going in during lunchtime

I liked the old menu more
Service is good
Elsa
Pretty good food, fast service, place is nice n clean.
however a lil over priced for dinner menu and the portions were small.
Lunch deals are better though.
One of the best experience I have had with Japanese restaurant. Surpurb Shop atmosphere, nice music and a very 'Japanese' feeling. We ordered the salmon sushi roll, vegeĀ tempura, beef bento and salmon stake bento. More than enough for the three of us for around $60. A little short staffed on Waitangi Day which is understandable, however, food came fast and was very nice. Strongly recommended.
Trainman1250
Been here a number of times and consistently have found respectful but very pleasant service especially when you talk to the staff.
Short service times based on prep time.
Perfect Tempura.
Mui boxes deliver much more than they promise.
Good decor, nice Korean/Japanese interpretation.
Freshly made Takoyaki as good as in Osaka.
Croquettes to die for.
Could do with Japanese range of non alcoholic drinks, Calpis etc.

We randomly stumbled across this place while looking for something to eat. With a lot of signage covering the windows it's not exactly inviting. I was surprised to find it quite busy. The ambiance was average. We were served and seated promptly. The waiters weren't very friendly, just did their job and didn't bother you.

I think we ordered chicken katsu with udon noodles. I'm not a fan of food where you get a bunch of sides that weren't mentioned in the menu. There were about 5 elements on the plate that we didn't exactly ask for and did not enjoy. We ate the chicken and left mostly everything else.

Don't think I'd ever go back.
Overall, I found the dishes quite salty. From their complimentary miso soup to salmon terriyaki and prawn dumplings, I felt my tongue was hurting due to too much salt. Their famous fried chicken, though, was cooked to perfection and saved our dinner.

The manager was a one-man show. He was taking orders, serving, cashiering and clearing tables. It resulted to slightly lengthy waiting times.

The ambience was quite nice. Prices are reasonable to a bit overpriced.

Love this Japanese restaurant. We've been here countless time. One of our favourite indeed. Every visit always satisfies our taste pallet. Good food portion. Nice in house music. They playing Japanese songs and there was one visit that they were playing classic songs. Highly recommended.

My friend found this joint around the corner from his and it's an absolute gem.
Big portions, great value for money and delicious food! Ordered the salmon salad and the chicken box. My salad was to die for! Nice and zesty and super fresh..definately recommend this.
Also ordered the crab cream croquette which is to die for šŸ˜

I don't know why it's so quite here this place is so good, non of the dishes disappointed us, the chilly chicken is so yum, everything is just perfect will definitely come back
Georgia Edmonds
Definitely my favourite Japanese Restaurant, not only locally. My favourite dish is either the chilli chicken and yum yum prawns. So much flavour and such a decent price for the servings you get.

Service is always incredible and the place itself is always clean.

Love this place!!!

Average Japanese place. Fast service. Interesting volcano roll. Usual selection but not as much sushi roll selections. The fried chicken is good but I think the ones in the dinner box is just the right quantity
Mr Grouchy
A nice hidden gem. Generous portion size and very tasty fried chicken.

We frequent here quite often as there is no need for booking. Ambience is alright, not shabby and there is room between tables.

Beautiful food. Great Quality. Great amazing service. Friendly staff. I buy from there an average of twice a week. I've never had a bad dish. Always fresh always tasty. I've not eaten in. I have always gotten take aways. I imagine eating in is better since you can purchase alcohol from there. And the food might be a tad warmer eating in. But takeaways are an amazing experience. 10 out of 10.

Found this hidden gem a while back and this place is definitely my go to place when it comes to Japanese food around my area! It's a great place to dine in with friends and family or even during your work break! I have been here a couple of times for lunch but not for dinner. Food was great, I really enjoyed the udon set and the o bento. The staff was lovely and excellent service. The price of the food is slightly expensive but it's the same for all Japanese restaurants. Defs, worth coming back again šŸ˜Š

We visit this place almost weekly. Love the food, especially the different types of fried chicken and sushi. Service is always perfect and same with the food.

I've been coming back here for their fried chicken, which is possibly the best that I've had so far. I like that it's boneless and we usually get just the fried chicken with the volcano or salmon roll and also the crab cream croquette. The fried chicken also comes with any dinner box which is only $20.

Besides the food, what got me coming back was the good service and comfortable setting. Once, the waitress gave me another small bowl of fried chicken as the kitchen staff said that the ones in my dinner box were too little. I hadn't even noticed but really appreciated their gesture. Water and hot tea are complimentary and self-serviced.

This restaurant definitely deserves a visit (and you will probably find yourself coming back again).

Was going to Poong Ro for lunch and saw it was closed and so we decided to look around. That's when we discovered this hidden gem, had good service and food was awesome . Was a nice relaxing lunch too.

Yum! This place is a hidden gem! I was expecting this place to be super busy on a weekend night but surprisingly it wasnt busy at all. I guess the place itself is too hidden for people to notice it. We got the renkon, mui karage chicken, beef bento box and a mixed tempura. The bento box was $20 came with two dumplings, side of chicken pieces, salad, rice and beef. It was very worth it. I wouldnt say this place has traditional Japanese food as its own and run by korean so a lot of the dishes taste quite, korean-y. Everything was delicious, portion was big. Well worth it!
Fabulous meal.Ā People were very friendly and every dish was a treat.Ā It is a pleasant casual dining area.Ā We've been to many Japanese restaurants and we will have no hesitation in going to Mui again.Ā Thank you for a delightful meal in a relaxed atmosphere.

Came here with some colleagues when I was picking something up out East. We decided to dine at Mui when we realised that Pong Ro was closed for lunch.

Mui has a nice quiet atmosphere and overall the place looked clean and neat. We were seated quite quickly and had our orders taken.

Our food took around 10 minutes to come out and visually the food looked beautiful. However in terms of taste I found the food quite bland and this sentiment was echoed by my colleagues. The udon soup had no flavour and tasted like warmed salt water, so I would strongly recommend against this dish.

My donburi was okay but for 14$ I expect a little more than 3 slices of chicken, and the taste was nothing amazing. Portion size is definitely an issue here.

Showstopper: Neat and comfortable atmosphere.

Overall Grade: B-

I reckon if the food improved this place would be fantastic, but it puzzles me how you can screw up basic meals like Udon soup.

Will come back and give these guys another go but hopefully their portion and taste improve.

Once a week every week. Its cheap and the food and service is great. Bit of a hit and miss sometimes but overall awesome little restaurant. Cheese sticks and fried chicken are must trys
Adeline
Good entrees and mains- the gyozas were delicious and the chicken, salmon and beef boxes were tasty and filling. The only thing that wasnt as good was the apple doughnuts as theyre too sweet. Will go back to try other dishes.

Our 'go to' place if we're craving for japanese food. Love their soft shell crab salad and chicken. Mui has been consistently good which is why we always come back.
Ronald Tan
Pretty good authentic Japanese food. A bit of fusion with the Korean feel. Had the mui soba. Should have ordered the teriyaki version. Fried chicken was good.
Kelly
Yum! Dined here for dinner with the usual group of friends ā˜ŗļø

Loved the food here, I was originally wanting to try the cold soba here but that's only available at lunch. But that's okay!! The rest of the menu for dinner was very appetising. I love sukiyaki, so of course I ordered that along with chilli chicken, take wasabi, along with a salmon and chicken bento.

I looved my sukiyaki šŸ˜ plenty of beef that was beautifully tender and melted in your mouth. So good!! Highly recommend the sukiyaki! Also the chilli chicken is delicious, just the right amount of sweetness and chilli, so it's more of a sweet chilli chicken than something spicy. Chicken was moist and really damn good!
The octopus (tako wasabi) was good, it's definitely not for everyone haha, but I enjoyed it. It's a different texture and the wasabi helps cut down on the freshness of the octopus.

The food here is priced very well! And the quality and quantity is on point!! I'm very satisfied šŸ˜
The decor of the restaurant is modern, I love the wood features. The restaurant is clean and the staff are friendly and attentive.

Highly recommend this restaurant, I'll definitely be back for more!
SS
Mmmmm Japanese.

Dinner between the two, shared the prawn gyoza, mui karaage chicken and the chicken dinner box. The karaage chicken was absolutely stellar. Fresh, crunchy, juicy and perfectly cooked. I can't complain. Well, I can. I'd complain because my heart craves more. Gyoza and chicken box were good - not too much to write home about.

The modern and tidy decor is inviting as is the service. Food doesn't take long to be served and is served hot and timely. Water and hot tea is available, self service. I personally thought it was great value for money and I'm sure I'll be back again soon! :-)
Hui Lang
Great place. Yummy food - more on the expensive side - but we left feeling happy. This restaurant had brilliant service, possibly the best I've experienced in a long time. The way that our wrong order was dealt with was beyond our expectations. You can most definitely taste and feel the passion the owner has for his food. 100% would go back again, MUI - you have our support.

Nice place and friendly staff
All dishes cheap price
Best Japanese restaurant in east tamaki
Recommend chicken dinner box
After seeing quite a few good reviews for this place, Mum and I thought we'd go for a drive and get some lunch here. A little out of the way for us but easy enough to find! The dƩcor is nice with traditional japanese features, with a modern twist. The restaurant is a good size and ideal for small groups or couples. The service was very friendly and attentive during our peak lunch time visit. We both got the Chicken bento box, which was pretty good value. It was a good little taster of everything and we both enjoyed it. The serving size was just right for lunch!

Been here for dinner recently. Was surprised when the moment i step into the door, there was no any other customers at all and it was a weekend. But the food was excellent. Service was also great. Will definitely be back for more.

A chance discovery from zomato and a big success. Service was excellent, the food very nice, with a free unusual choices. the Japanese steam boat was great, as was the salmon teriyaki. You have to try the traditional? Apple donut desert, delicious
Marcella
A cute little japanese place. Came here today with high expectations but was left feeling disappointed with the food. It was nice, but nothing that left me wanting more.

We got the pork don katsu set and the beef bento box. My highlight with the lunchbox was the chicken karage which came as part of the bento box. Nice and moist. The pork don was average and was pretty small.

All in all, it was a pleasant lunch experience, but not Wowed. Decor was lovely though and service was friendly.
Ricky Jack
Wonderful service, amazing food. Very affordable. What really set it apart was the atmosphere in the actual restaurant.

Lovely ambient music and the sound of running water from a water feature. Plus ample table space, always a big plus!
KC
Quiet little place that me and my friend had found. The crispy pork was very good as well as their spicy chicken. Would definitely go there again :)

Mui located in a very quiet area close to botany junction, we wouldn't find this place without my friend's recommendation. This place is spacious and I really like their Japanese theme decoration.Ā

Me and my friend have been there for lunch and dinner, we thought this Japanese restaurant is one of the best in the area even its own by Korean. We especially like there dinner set menu, it has a variety of choices and everything in the set dinner was delicious!
Eu Jian Tok
Great atmosphere, peaceful and quiet place for a dine out after a hectic day of work. Food was tasty and fresh. Service was extremely polite.
Sean Appleby
Wow, just wow. Totally blown away, in Auckland you can find excellent Japanese food but it will cost you. At mui it's cheap, especially considering the quality of the food and presentation. Worth mentioning also is how lovely the waitresses were. Friendly and efficient. I will be back! Thank you Mui
Hannah K
Yum!!! Came here a few weeks ago and their bento box was so delicious and filling and I really enjoyed their Japanese tea, would come back here again
Extra Boon
Mui was interesting and not like your other usual Japanese restaurants. Many of their dishes were prepared with different combinations of ingredients and it had given identity to its menu. Well prepared, balanced and presented. Given that their staff is not Japanese (Koreans), their food still had that authenticity linkage to Japanese cuisine. The staff was also very friendly.

The decor inside is very well laid out and brings out a feeling of warmth and tranquility. I liked how they used different elements of Japanese culture to create that ambiance of 'Zen' - greenery, bamboo, colour scheme, rock garden, wood and candles to enlighten the mood for the nights.
Brian Simms
Decent Japanese style food, but quite pricey for a small restaurant. The service was alright, but sometimes a bit slow and perhaps misunderstood? We enjoyed their course meal, which seemed to be of the best value on the menu- you get a few different things.
Annette Gledhill
Great atmosphere, food and service
John
chicken teriyaki was amazing. very good service and they even gave us a free miso soup on v-day. very pleased about that. the green tea ice cream was a big let down but despite that. everything was good.
Mathias Hugfreudy
Good food, good restaurant.
A little bit far from city center. And I regret they are no Japanese workers inside.
