Review Ponsonby Social Club - Auckland Central

Michael King
Great night of music, cocktails and friends. Important hub of culture for Auckland.

The venue is pretty tiny &only takes 70 people for a gig. It's an 'intimate' venue & I really enjoyed Hollie Smith playing live on November 18th. The food nibbles are very good &I had a GREAT Vodka mojito (mohito). 10/10 even the difficulty getting Ponsonby parking wouldn't put me off going back again, and again1

Good times were had.

Short stay as traveling with a group on a wine. trail. The wine was excellent, location has a external court yard and was just catching the sun, so quite a lovely time. Decor is really good, staff were friendly and venue including this really clean. Would come back for a longer visit .

The best place I have been to in Auckland. I can have a beer, eat great food, listen to cool music, bring my dog, be sheltered from the rain AND!!!! have a smoke!!!

Nice bar that promotes local artists. Small but very organized and great vibe. Drinks and tacos available.
Chris Vidal
It is one of the best clubs in the city. Good for all ages. Good music and great staff.

Great music and awesome banter with the barwoman. She so made us surprise mocktails that were absolutely delicious. highly recommend for a chill one out with your mates!

I went with a bunch of mates and we were dressed in colourful but still semi smart clothing, not that it should even matter, was pretty obvious we were out there and gay. the staff couldn't even put on fake smiles and gave us looks of disgust, also would rate the quality of customer service really poorly, it was the bare minimum and we didn't feel like valued customers at all. This place really needs a lesson in diversity and follow other businesses in Ponsonby who embraces everyone in the tight nit ponsonby community. Im disgusted and recommend if you want a good care free night STAY CLEAR OF THIS PLACE. sad that they had to ruin the good care free vibes of being in ponsonby!

The finest bar in Auckland! Great atmosphere, amazing wine list and cocktails! Everytime I'm out with friends we come to PSC and we never get disappointed. It's always a great night along with very good music.

Refused entry by bouncers - friends and I were not drunk, they were complete power trippers. Will not be returning.

Our Sunday night reads almost identically to Joel’s post below. A group of us were lined up waiting to join our friends inside. The one person that was pulled out of line for being ‘too intoxicated’ was our clearly gay friend. We had all had far more to drink than he had (including those who had come from the same party and were already inside) with no issues. The bouncer was aggressive, unreasonable and clearly homophobic - Our friend was asked how many drinks he’d had and before listening to his answer he was ushered out of line without the chance to explain to the bouncer he was not in fact intoxicated. It is unbelievable that this is still happening. We will not be returning.

After an apparent misunderstanding with the bouncers, I felt they used their authority to intimidate me, patronise me and speak to me in a very condescending way. I complained via private message and received and incredibly dismissive and patronising response back. Seems to be a common theme at Ponsonby Social Club, along with frequent discriminatory behaviour. Its 2018 PSC, get with the times. Rubbish bar, horrible staff. I'd rather stick pins in my eyes then return to this horrific place.

Went to this bar for some wine after a long day at work with two ( straight ) friends that were fairly drunk when we lined up at 10:30 on Friday the 6 of October they got in no problem then when it came to me the pulled me aside and ask how many beers I had after I said I just got off work ( as a bar manager in the area) they said I was too wasted to get in and ask me to leave. Not sure why this would happen but it happens to me and my other gay friends it's really upsetting didn't think there was still such a negative outlook on the gay community in Ponsonby area but this bar is definitely showing it, their NOT GAY FRIENDLY!

The worst service I have ever seen. The bartender was to busy flirting with a customer to server others. Then in a rush to get back to flirting he only took half the order. Then he opens a door into the same person. General this and experience like no other venue.

I'm not one to ever complain or write reviews on establishments, but this kind of mentality I thought was far beyond what New Zealand society is about so I have to express my frustration. Last week a group of my friends decided to go to your establishment. Two friends (straight) entered the bar with no issues myself and another were met with hostility and any excuse to not allow us in. We were thrown with every excuse "you're not wearing a collared shirt" - my two friends that entered first were wearing t-shirt's (I also believe this dress code is out of date should stay in the 90's your demographic doesn't even dress like this) - the bouncer also tried to accuse me of being drunk, that evening I had a beer and was very sober he must have seen the look of disgust on my face. This may sound like he was doing his job on paper, but what I can't describe the look on his face. I have never been met with this amount of disrespect and what I believe to be homophobic behavior at any bar anywhere in the world. After many conversations I have learned this is not the first time this has happened and I have had many friends with similar experiences, I thought maybe this was just a one off. You are a bar in Ponsonby with a community so different in demographic it is founded on inclusiveness with a massive gay community flamboyant, expressive or "straight-acting" whatever - I never thought this would happen at home. This just proves that the soul of the community has truly left. Shame I'm even having to say this.

Always enjoy the music here, good to bop along to. The bartender working last in the red t-shirt, in my opinion, is a very poor bartender.

I must acknowledge first and foremost that I am visiting this bar in level 2 lockdown a few days before level 1. Firstly the table service bartender tried to trick me with pricing of drinks. I later discussed this with him and her apologised. So I will forgive this as I admittedly trying to get a discount.
But what I will not forgive is the aggressive/intimidating behaviour of the security. During my time her a song my friends and I emjoyed came on, therefore we stood up and boggied around our table, only to be approached aggressively by a security guard and told “sit down, right now! You can’t dance”. Two of us moved closer to the table, but continued to stand and dance. Only for the security guard to return pointing his finger in our direction yelling “sit down, I won’t give you another chance”.
With no real explanation I assume this is to do with covid-19?! A friendly explanation of why we can not dance around our table would have came across a lot more respectable, but to be yelled out for something that is considered “normal” is tough.
This experience has lowered my recommendations of this bar unfortunately as I feel it would usually be a great place to have a few drinks and boogie to some old school hip hop/rnb music.
Unlucky team. But that’s some shocking customer service 👎🏼

Love the ambiance of the place just like most places around ponsonby. Their drinks on tap are pretty cool however Cocktails can be little expensive. It gets pretty busy by the night and the name becomes literal. Also they play some great music and have in house DJ, the crowd does go wild by midnight so not an ideal place for a quiet drink after a while.
Definitely might go back with a group not sure for a quiet drink or two.

Came here last night for a few before we went for dinner. Drinks are okay, not many selection however good atmosphere with good mellow music. Been here for a dance the music was good. Service is alright.
Lily
The place had no line or anything. Very very busy. The drinks were ok. We went there to dance. But the music was not good at all. The quality of music in this place depends on the DJ who is on duty that night.....so make sure you pick the right night!

I don’t know if it was the fact that we had to talk loudly to be heard, or that we had a good mix of people, or that the size of the table meant we had to be very close to one another, but a quiet drink turned into a scream-fest rather quickly.

Better known for it's late night shenanigans, PSC is a cool place to hang out and grab a drink with friends. It has a long, narrow outdoor (but indoor) front section, leading to the main bar and dance floor area. Usually quite full Thursday through to Saturday nights, but more bar-centric than full on club atmosphere.

Music is dependent on what night you come, but usually a cool mix of drum and base slash hip hop. Two bars are available for your drinking convenience. The food menu is mainly bar/grazing type meals, but decent enough- we ordered the fish and chips. Food can't be outdone by the bartenders though, who can whip up mostly any kind of alcoholic beverage you like.

Overall, at night it is a fun and hip little bar - not quite a club, but more lively and "happening" than a bar, with all the usual food and drink suspects available.

Great menu, good American diner feel to the entire place. The bone marrow dish is among one of the best things I have ever tasted and its the ability to spring on dishes that most wouldnt attempt to put on a menu that sets this place apart #g1

Ponsonby Social Club have a decent menu. The burger that we had is superb and the spuds we're really nice. It is a pumped up Diner with nice music and a funky vibe. Waiters we're really spot on and friendly. I would certainly go back if I want to catch up with friends and listen to nice music over wine.
