Review Umu Pizza - Auckland Central

Ash Winter
Service here was 5/5 in being accommodating with our newborn in a car seat and the staff was very friendly. However it was pretty busy and felt slightly forgotten at times. I would have liked to see more tomato based pizzas on the menu but we enjoyed the nduja and the ricotta + zucchini pizza nonetheless. The chilli oil was an added flavour to our meals and made very well! The tiramisu was extremely heavy on the cream which was slightly disappointing. Would probably come back to try other pizzas!

Delicious food and excellent service. They have a good menu of beers as well. The staff is very friendly and polite. So far, the best pizza we have had in Auckland.

Like wow I just ate one of the best pizzas I have ever had in my life. This place is legit. Warm chill atmosphere, great music, the staff were so friendly. Great drink selection couldn't ask for more. Will absolutely be back with the family. Thanks guys amazing ❤️

Oh, I love Umu Pizza, gorgeous crust and toppings. A bit pricey for 12-inch pizza, but it’s so worth it and enough to feed two people. And dec t size Caprese salad was delicious with soft, tender and creamy cheese. Lovely atmosphere with a small cocktail bar corner.

Went for the first time before the women's world cup match at Eden park. They squeezed our group in last minute and got us a table. The staff was very friendly and attentive. They had a variety of pizza options including dairy and gluten free. The gluten free option wasn't the best texture and could have been cooked more but the other pizzas everyone enjoyed. The atmosphere was buzzing and with the pizza oven in the main dining area it provided some additional entertainment.

Yum! i love the sourdough and unique topping combos here. 1 tip is i would definately dining in, when getting this on uber eats or any delivery (although still yum) i dont think the pizzas travel quite so well

Tasty pizza and cold beers. The artichoke dip was a little bland though. The vibes inside were good, and I liked the decor, but it was super cold. The staff were nice and quick to service but once you got everything they kind of forgot about you. A tad pricey for what you got.

Fresh and great ! The restaurant was clean and quiet full in eventime. The service was nice. Staffs are friendly and wait not long time. You can see them how they cook your pizza. Food were super fresh and so yum. Especially, my partner loves teramisu here. However, I think the prices quite over a bit but not too bad.

Great pizza spot with a proper pizza oven. The truffle, gorgonzola and onions pizza is to die for. Recommended!

Excellent pizza. I got the number one with mushrooms and pancetta. Can’t stop thinking about how good it was.

Really tasty bases, pizza can come out in about 5 min. Very cute set up. Vegan options, extra $5 for vegan cheese 👎 but pretty good vegan cheese so maybe worth it. Would try no cheese in future for a dairy free option

I can still taste this wonderful, woodfired pizza dough and crust a week later... I honestly forgot what style of pizza we got because the dough was so fluffy I could eat it every day - dip it in some olive oil and perfections. I really liked this small, limited seating cocktail bar vibe - reservations are highly recommended to ensure you get a table. Pizzas came out super quick too. I was worried they'd be too small to split, but really it was perfect sized... except that having extra to take home wouldn't have been a bad thing at all hehe. Wife particularly loved the buffalo mozzarella in the caprese salad too - very creamy.

Very, very good pizza, attentive but not overbearing staff, and a nicely relaxed atmosphere (in the best way). Love this place!

Kingsland is a buzzing place and this place just adds to it… went for dog walk and stopped off, shared a pizza had a lovely bottle of French Rose and were served and over served by friendly staff.. pizza was lovely, I describe it as Italian flavoured pizza served on an amazing flavoured nan bread, so different , but amazing
Geoff White
Authentic Neapolitan pizza very well-executed. Good ratio of toppings to base. Don't be tempted to add extra toppings or your final result may be too wet & overloaded. The small number of negative reviews here are mostly from people who don't understand this style of pizza. The slices are supposed to be floppy, with a thin base & thick pillow-y crust. It would be nice if some free-range meats (e.g. chicken) could be made available.

Fun, vibrant, great music. Pizza is to die for. Even gluten-free pizzas!!! An excellent night out!! Our new favourite place. Try the Apple Pie Pizza. YUM!!!

In my opinion UMU has the best pizza I have ever had in the world hopefully this does not raise your expectations too high but if it does then I'm sure you will agree, service was excellent and great drink selection to please everyone. Will be back soon can't wait..

Traditional Italian wood-fired Pizza. Great taste, fresh ingredients, and great vibe. Will definitely be back again soon. Staff were very professional and service was fast. Would recommend for a cheeky mid-week catch up with friends. They do Takeaway too.

Amazing, delicious, il migliore! No pizza place in Auckland is quite like UMU. Great staff, electric atmosphere & a beaut pizza oven dishing up Italian perfection I’m hanging out for my next fix

Great Pizza right on our doorstep - the smell of the chorizo is insanely devine. Nice local crew with local beers and select pizza ingredients. Choose from One to Eight - that's how they name them - even the most simple One is yum :)
Stuart McEwan
Really good food in a great atmosphere, the oven is something to be seen and knocks out some lovely sourdough pizzas. Good drop of beer to be had too. Well done Simon and team.
Ondrej Grulich
Hands down the best pizza in AKL and probably in NZ!!!

First pizza tonight had a number 3 it was simple and so yummy. A straight forward menu which I'm looking forward to making my way through.
Natalie Price
OMG! Damn good pizza! And great service to match.

Food, decor, atmosphere, staff; all A+. A cosy spot for wholesome pizzas and simple yet flash sides with unique tastes.

The only pizza I've had in Auckland that rivals Stumpy's

First time here after following their Instagram for a while. Can tell the owner is passionate about the place and that resonated with the food! Dough was awesome and the pizzas were tastey as! We had the number 5 and the ninetynine. Will definately be back to try the rest!
Lisa
Umu specialises in pizza, they concentrate on pizza and make them to perfection. Limited variety but they all delicious. We were privileged enough to try one of their speciality pizzas, the gherkins on a pizza was weird but otherwise moreish.

The pizza was good but $20 for a margarita the size of a franchise pizza is crazy. Didn't expect to be halving that for dinner when we picked it up

I was recommended this place by a friend so decided to give it a go on a Saturday night. Checked their website and it said they closed at 11 pm. I called them on the way from the North Shore at 10 pm to place a takeaway order but they didn’t answer so assumed they were busy. Arrived at 10.20 only to be told by the staff, who were in the restaurant having a chat with a group of friends, they were closed. What a waste of my time. If your website says you close at 11 then you must close at 11. Learn how to answer your phone because the restaurant was empty and there were at least three staff that I could see. it’s clear that you didn’t answer it because you didn’t want to take any orders. I will not be returning based on this experience and I recommend everyone to not trust the hours on the website as the staff seem to run the joint based on their own schedules.

Amazing joint so close from home.
Great place for a Friday dinner.
We order the number 3 and 8 with a jug of beer we were not disappointed.
Recommended and we will come back.

We ordered 1 One pizza & added all of the below but we got no cherry tomato, a tsp of Caramelized onion, 4 slices of zucchini & could hadly see the red onion. We tried to have a little piece of everything we ordered on each slice (which was 6 small ones) but didnt have enough ingredients to share to all slices....Come on UMU, we paid for the ingredients but I've got to say that was a complete rip off! such a shame.
Xtra - Caramelized Onion, Xtra - Cherry Tomato, Xtra - Mushroom, Xtra - Red Onion, Xtra - Roasted Zucchini, Xtra - Vegan Cheese
remove: Xtra - Garlic 26.00

This is our go-to pizza place for our after work weekday date nights. Excellent wood fire pizzas and a good selection of wine. Relaxed and friendly service. Never disappointed us 👍

Pizza #5 & #3 pictured.
Bloody love this pizza! The sourdough base is Devine and the Naplese sauce is gooooooooooooooooooood!
They have some good (I think it’s Tuesday night) specials as well - is highly recommend trying their pizza. It’s my second fave in Auckland ! 👌🏼
CY
Base was real deal but sauce was a bit disappointing.
Overall not a bad pizza, but $14 is pushing it.

Fantastic pizza with a great variety of different choices in a friendly venue, great drink selection also. One piece of advice: give your customers serrated knives, the current knives make cutting the pizza cumbersome work
Flippynz
My spirit place. Pizza and only pizza. Absolute great joint. Dipped my toes in with a margarita. Decently priced but oh wow is it great food. Sourdough woodfired pizza! Need one back home. Totally coming back here to try the rest when i can. Has a bar to the side and seating on the street. Super friendly staff. Beer list average but some wines and a few cocktails available. Has a few cocktail books to read as well.
Sorry_vonguenumber
Low key and friendly service. Love the fresh pizzas, especially the pizza Three which is a three cheese pizza and the highlight is pizza five. Love the flavours of this pizza with the fennel and the Sicilian sausage.
Anastacia
Best pizza ! Love the happy hour specials - group friendly venue, now with the cute cocktail bar next door. Pizza and drinks - what could go wrong ? Love the three cheese pizza and the mushroom and cheese option. Always fresh, seasonal and delicious. Umu never disappoint.

Sometimes you try a place and you know you’re going to be coming back after your first bite. Uni Pizza was one of those places.

This cool little joint in Kingsland served us some of the best pizza I’ve had in a while. The sourdough base was such a treat, it was so chewy and flavoursome and just filled ma cheeks, I loved every doughy bite.

We tried #4 and #7 and I can’t decide which I loved more. #4 was a tangy taste explosion with notes of fresh mint, lemon and goat’s cheese feta singing through prominently in every bite. There was a fat amount of mozzarella which I always appreciate, and the tangy sharpness of the flavours was balanced perfectly with the sweetness of the caramelised zucchini.

#7 was a luscious beast with thin slices of roasted potato and sweet caramelised onion, always addictive truffle oil, and a ridiculously delicious creamy layer of melted mascarpone and mozzarella.

Very impressed, will certainly be back to try more!

False advertisement. Put happy hour deal on their website and their Instagram, checked their website decided what pizza we are going to order, went there, and got told the deal no longer exist on the check out. Of course, paid the full price.
Suggest Zomato remove this promotion from your website too, it’s no longer exists.
Apart from this, pizza was nice, nice deco too!

Trendy little pizza place. Service was warm and pizzas were delicious. Love the intimate feel, great for gossip sessions with the girls, also it is connected to a bar so its perfect for late dinners!
Ella
Nice, reasonably price food and drinks. Only issue is the staff aren’t very hospitable- I’ve been twice (once when they first opened and once this past week) and both times have walked inside and no one has approached us or told us to take a seat/taken us to a seat even though they were standing at the pizza oven and looking at us. Once we were finally given a seat the service was more efficient but still didn’t feel like they wanted to be there.
Maria
Super delicious, Italian style sourdough pizza! Highly recommend, the ingredients are fresh and high quality. There's also a nice cocktail bar next door for after dinner drinks.
Lily
Two for one pizzas at Umu. The courgette pizza has a nice zest and the margarita pizza is so tomato-ey both have nice sourdough bases and are must try’s
Delicious
Great little place, awesome pizza and sick music selection. The staff are really friendly and the vibe is good.

The dessert was also delicious!

We spotted Umu while driving down New North Road and immediately stopped to take a look - upon closer inspection of their menu, we were hooked (you had me at vegan cheese!)

Once we got past the front door - one of the staff was leaning against it having a conversation, so we had to knock to get in (a bit of a strange start) - we were immediately greeted with the welcome warmth of the front-and-centre pizza oven and shown to a table. The space, while small, is well utilised with big shared tables.

Our pizza came incredibly fast, which was a plus, and the dough is absolutely awesome. I’d recommend ordering 1/2 to 1 pizza per person and trying one of their well matched wines alongside it. We went for vegan cheese and veggies on our pizza - a simple combo but they nailed it.

The service definitely has some kinks to be worked out, however the waitress who served us was polite and friendly.

Overall a good enough experience that we will be back - thanks Umu!

Really delicious pizza, although for the price i was disappointed by the size and amount of toppings. Staff also seemed a bit lifeless and sad....
Joshua Taylor
It was an interesting start. The guy making pizza at the entrance instructed us to talk to “insert name here” like we were supposed to know who that was. She then pointed us at the bar man (the friendly one of the bunch) who seated us. From the 6 pizza orders, two of them were incorrect, the waitress really didn’t care but did get them fixed up. I’m not really sure what it’s like to work there but the vibe was awkward.

The food on the other hand was average-to-good. We ended up leaving pretty quickly to head somewhere else for drinks.
Sophie Wilton
absolutely loved it here!! pizza came out pretty quick despite the place being reasonably busy and watching our food be cooked right in front of us in the pizza oven was really cool! only thing I would say is that the drinks menu could do with a few more non alcoholic options but other than that the pizza was super yum!
Andrew
Complacency breeds customer service indifference it seems. Upon arriving we were directed to our table by a "not bovvered" waitress, who managed to remain stony-faced throughout our experience, even when two pizzas were served with incorrect toppings - no apologies given. No basic info given - place your order at the bar, cocktail special of the day etc. It wasn't all calamitous though; when engaged, the bar man was very friendly, the pizzas generally met with approval from our group of six, and the $10 margaritas were decent. 4/5 had the customer service been better.

I envy people who own Pizzerias. It seems like such a simple life.

- Create the perfect dough.
- Add good simple ingredients.
- Cook.
- Bathe in the adulation of your customers, friends and family.

If only it was that easy.

Speaking to Simon, the owner/operator of Umu who gave up a career in IT to pursue his passion for baking he's clearly put his heart into Umu in the short time it's been open. Sourdough based pizza bases that rely on correct proving or you may as well close up for the night. On a couple of evenings when the dough hasn't proved correctly he's had to make the call to do just that, shut up shop. No use in opening if you're going to produce a sub par product.

After months of biding my thyme (pun intended), it was time to head into Kingsland and sample Umu.

The perfect char on the base providing the perfect balance against the sweetness of the tomato sauce. Pockets of air in a crisp base with just the right amount of chew, culminating in a sweet, salty, bitter, perfect eating experience.

Umu, you had me at moo.

I’ve been to UMU a few times now - it is super cosy and warm in the colder months. The pizza is uncomplicated and delicious. The menu is small, and the toppings are kept to a minimum. The pizza dough obviously has care and attention put to it. The only down side: the price! $24 for a pizza is too steep in my books.

Kingsland has some new kids on the block. First the Garage Project Taproom, then dessert cafe Elisabeth — now there’s a place for fresh as, sourdough pizza at Umu. The slow-rising dough apparently breaks down the starchy gluten present in flour, resulting in soft, light crust that doesn’t leave you feeling bloated. The wood-fired oven dominates the space in a good way, glittering in all its white mosaic glory. Shipped from Naples apparently. Give their ‘Lamb Merguez & Harissa Pizza’ a go — tangy and minty, the meat grilled just right, topped with the crumbly feta and yoghurt drizzle. The fluffy but chargrilled crust was super-satisfying and quite inhalable - they were bang on about the sourdough. Honestly, we ate way more slices than our usual pizza slice limits, and happily. Service was OK but a bit jarry - definitely not the most engaging but didn’t detract from the good times. Go on a Tuesday and nab their ‘Buy 2 Get the 3rd free’ deal. Boom. #umugotapizzamyheart
Check out our individual food reviews here: husk.co.nz/lunches/umu-pizza

Busy on a Friday evening but still got seated at one of the large shared tables straight away. Being vegetarian we ordered #two and #four. Great crust, really loved how nice and light it was, felt full afterwards but not uncomfortably so. Toppings were simple and tasty. Particularly liked #two which was tomato, mozzarella and basil, but wouldn’t have #four again. The meat pizzas looked really good as well.

Went here on Sunday late afternoon. Love the atmosphere and setup of the restaurant, especially with the cool looks of woodfire oven. Had a good seat facing the oven. Staff were both friendly and gave us a nice vibes.

We ordered a pizza (#8) to share. Thought the dough was quite nice but certainly would love to see a bit more toppings (more mushi would be nice) and more of garlic oil taste for the price.

A bit gutted as we missed the notes in the window of happy hour, thought it is start at 5pm like the web said, apparently start at 4pm which then we would be eligible for special margarita.
Lizzie
Tried this place last night and were lucky to get a table straight away. The pizzas were yum, the dough especially was great and I didn’t feel overly full afterwards. We shared #4, #6 and #8 - #8 was my favourite! Will def be back!

Dined here on a “pumping” busy Thursday night which happened to be the Kingsland food fair night.
Fortunate to find a seat without booking ahead, but place filled up pretty quickly after 6pm.
Pizza size was 12” with 4 slices per pizza. The sourdough base was just the right texture. We ordered a range of pizzas and our favourites were #4 and #7. Great options for our vegetarian - kids friendly, chilled atmosphere and friendly service!

Went for a midweek dinner with 3 others. Had to wait about 20minutes to be seated. The wait was worth it because everyone’s pizzas were amazing! The bases were delicious and the topping combinations worked really well!

All I can say is that Jessie Mulligan who wrote the Viva review got a different pizza than we got. We got 2 takeaway pizzas. The Mozzarella, mushroom and Pancetta was burnt on the bottom and tasted bitter. There was a portion of the pizza that had no topping at all and the pancetta was like little cubes of fatty ham. Also very little mushroom. The Mozzarella, tomato and basil was a bit better. It was not so burnt and the edges was not so thick and chewy. $40 waste of money.

Nice interior but disappointing food. We’ve ordered chorizo pizza but rarely found chorizo from the pizza. They really need to rework there theory that's it's the best on the basic with ingredients and taste

The food scene in Auckland is so exciting. There are so many new food places now and my list of places to go to keeps growing. The latest addition to the scene is UMU Pizza. If you love a good pizza, this is a place to check out. I’ve been twice and have tried 6 out of the 8 pizzas they have on offer so if you want to know my thoughts and more info about this place, continue down below.
