Review Tom Yum Eden - Auckland Central

Eric Chou奧克蘭寶哥
Tiny little shop on Dominion road, you can miss it if you don't pay attention to the green signage. Not expected any only looked for a place to have my dinner after my clinic appointment. Staffs are extremely friendly, great service great hospitality. First time here so simply ordered the menu on the wall, and that was my best decision to make. Tasty Yummy Very authentic Thai flavour I will come back for sure, absolutely a hidden treasure. Highly recommended.👍

Little gem in Mt Eden. This place doesn’t look fancy but the food is really good. We like to come here if we are looking for some decent Thai street food. One of the best thai milk tea in Auckland. It’s a small restaurant, and may be easily missed without noticing. Well, the food is amazing! Very authentic Thai cuisine, spicy and delicious!
Leslie Den Harder
Tiny cafe with Thai home cooking. Delicious food and very very nice couple who cook and serve here. We have had takeaway and eat in and the food is always exactly as you like it. ❤️

Best Thai place in town. Staff is awesome and the best Thai food I ever had. Since 2 month we have been there several times. Everything we tried was just amazing.

Looking for Thai Authentic. Here is the place you would think you were in Thailand 🇹🇭 😉.

The serving size is big, enough to feed a hungry man. The taste is not bad too. There are not many tables, but a lovely small one. Recommend.

Lovely meal, friendly staff, everything are so yum. Beware, when you order hot, it is thai hot...

We love this place. If you are looking for authentic Thai with original taste, this place is highly recommended! You will never be disappointed.
Haim Sommerville
Very tasty food, been consistently going here since 2008, very friendly and nice staff (owners included). They manage to give good quantities vs other Thai places but certainly still retain the quality. All these other 1 star reviews are truely not an accurate description and representation of the kind of place this is and people are. I find it hard to believe that these guys were rude and or aren't able to cook.

We had some takeaway from this shop. It was a great surprise. Very good Thai food! Specially Pad Thai, it was delicious with wok hey😋

So satisfying with tasty Thai food at this tiny warm restaurant! Had tried a few in Auckland before until I get here today, then this place become my top one. Friendly owner, fair price, my friends and I really enjoy every dishes, no disappointment at all. Highly recommend!

Just had dinner out at Tom Yum Eden Thai restaurant in Mt Eden, but half way into a fish we found a long strand of hair inside the fish. We told the staff what we had found and they came and took the fish away but didn't come back or say anything. We had been waiting for a while and then asked them what was going on. They told us that they were just gonna give us $5 off the $30.50 fish we had ordered, I thought this was slightly rude of them as they didn't even apologise about anything and still made us pay for the food that had a hair in it. After this they said that we could talk to the chef who cooked the fish, however another staff member came out and just told us that because we ate half the fish we should pay for it, and as there was a hair in it we should have bought it to their attention before eating the fish. However the hair was half inside the fish and looked like it was covered in fish so we wouldn't have found it before eating the fish. I'm so angry and very disappointed, I'm would never ever recommend this place to anyone, such bad service, rude and not hygienic

Every time when I visit this place. I always feel like my home. All staffs members are friendly. Lots Thai people eat there. That's mean they know where the real Thai food is. When my friend ask me where is the best Thai authentic food in Auckland. I only can say TOM YUM EDEN.

First time there, took my son and his girlfriend, my wife is Thai and hard to find a Thai restaurant that does authentic Thai food We went on Tuesday night, very happy staff friendly service good and the food excellent, generous portions and a fair price. We plan to go back on a regular basis

The best authentic Thai food in Auckland!!Excellent food and service!!

My family found a hair in our food last night at Tom Yum Eden, we tried to be discreet about it by telling the staff quietly. We told them we found a hair half way into our fish and they took it back, however they didn't come back to apologise or tell us what was happening. When we asked they said they'd give us $5 off, then they said we could talk to the cook, and we tried to be polite and quiet but the cook came out about told us that as we ate half we must pay for the fish, another staff member also said we should have found the hair before eating the fish and sent it back immediately, but how could we of? It was in the fish. We tried to reason with the staff but the situation escalated and everyone is the shop was staring at my family having this argument. When we left the shop, one of the staff members said in Thai that they didn't care and that we can report them to city council if we wanted to. As business owners them selves, my parents and Aunty and uncle could respect the fact that they need to run their business, but they didn't have to be so rude about it.

ThaNks for opening The most authentic thai taste in Auckland with high quality ingredients very fresh. Have ordered a few dishes for party and my friends love them. Many friends became customers there for Thai since. The taste made you feel not missing out anything from home. Staffs are lovely , helpful and professional also the chefs are very friendly and highly understand to certain level needs for customers. I wouldn't go to another place for Thai in Auckland.

From NYC to Bangkok I've been a lover of Thai food. And these homemade Curry Puffs are the best I have ever had. Large, full of flavour. DELICIOUS CUISINE!!

When friends ask where do I normally go for Thai foods? I always said, I cook my Thai foods at home. Having say that, the only place that's wayyyy better than my home cooking and make me feel like home is "Tom Yum Eden" never disappointed, my favourite dishes are Thai noodle soup, Som Tum set, Pad see ew just to name a few. Most recommended authentic Thai foods in town

I really wanted Pad Thai for lunch so it only made sense to visit Tom Yum, which was one of my bookmarked Thai restaurants. The restaurant is quite small but it wasn’t very busy so food came out at a quick pace. I got the pad thai with chicken and no peanuts, but I was given shrimp instead and peanuts at first but they realised and quickly fixed this. My brother got the stir fried with oyster sauce, chicken and rice and my mum got the special beef noodle soup.

My pad Thai was good because it wasn’t too sweet and more savoury. The noodles were al dente, which I really appreciated. My brother had some of my pad thai but portion wise, it was pretty ok. Mum loved her soup though, she said it was super beefy, rich and flavourful!

Overall, a decent restaurant to try out but make sure they get the order right!

Definitely one of the more authentic Thai restaurants I've been to. They have a separate menu for Thai Style dishes - all in Thai. You will have to order from this menu if you want the best of the best. We got a couple of the Thai Boat noodles. Pork and liver noodles in a hearty, herbacious broth with vermicelli noodles. Great flavours and definitely not for the faint of heart. The Yen Ta Fo was also lovely, this was different and served in a fermented red bean curd broth with an assortment of seafood like fishballs, crab meat, shrimps etc, again another true Thai dish. We had the chicken wings on the side which was also lovely! I would strongly recommend ordering something out of your comfort zone when you come here and try out their authentic Thai dishes for a different experience.

Very friendly staff. Most food are great, my favorite is their steamed snapper with lemon and chili (ask for spicy), grilled pork, braised pork legs (need to pre-order), and cha om omelette (off menu).
Aurora Lim
The most yummy Nam Tok in Auckland, I could even finish the soup! And bbq skew is my side dish whenever I go there, it reminds me the Thai Street food, I think nowhere in Auckland serve this dish though.
Haim Sommervile
Been going here for years - would happily recommend. Green curry, mussaman and cashew nut beef or chicken is the bomb. If you can’t handle spicy the safe one to go for is the pad rhai.
Paulina Food
The lunch time menu has a great value and taste. The noodles are very tasty. The proportion is also huge. They also have the somtum set that comes with grilled pork and sticky rice, very nice. Recommend to try the lunch menu.

We have passed by this place many times but never noticed this restaurant. After looking for a place to eat on the app.. came across this restaurant which was still open before it closed for the afternoon. Quickly called and made a take out order and was told 10
Minutes and it took us around 10
Minutes to reach the restaurant and we didn’t have to wait longer then 10 minutes food was ready and finally we parked somewhere to eat and food looked, smelled and mostly tasted amazing. Price was good as well. Will definitely have to go and try other food on the menu. Only bad comment is there was no fork or spoon in the bag and had to ask for them.

Like this place because the dish they serve is quite authentic. You know its a to go place to fix your thai food craves when you see alot thai people dine here. The beef noodle is my fav! You can choose beef or pork and the broth is very flavourful. The tomyum noodle is not the hot and sour soup you expected, it is one type of noodle they have in thai hawker stall which it is quite hard to find it here. Price is affordable and staff are all friendly and helpful too.

Absolutely LOVE this place!!! Whenever I crave Thai, this is definitely my go-to. Flavours are authentic & perfectly balanced as well as affordable. Staff are always lovely, friendly & welcoming. Sadly I am not one to take pictures of my meals, I forget & dig in lol Small but definitely worth it. Book/reserve ahead to prevent disappointment.

A little restaurant on dominion rd not flash inside. Liked deep fried snapper and som tum salad.

Service is good. A little pricy for some of stir fry dishes .

Authentic Thai food can find at this restaurant. This is one of my top 5 Thai restaurant in New Zealand. You can order any menu all good taste. Very yummy food but not many table so I would recommend to call for booking your table first.

4/5 Taste
4/5 Display
4/5 Quantity
4/5 Customer Service

Decent Thai Restaurant with Som Tam

Som Tam (spicy papaya salad with tomatos peanuts and dried shrimps) is my favourite Thai dish and not many restaurants can make this well.
Tom Yum in dominion road makes these really well and they also have other decent food too.
I'd probably give 4.5 if the venue was little bit cheaper and had more seatings.
SomTam set menu was pretty cheap tbh.
One of my favourite place to come. The best noodle soup! Very authentic. My favourite from here would be the numtok beef and pad Thai noodles! Friendly staff never once was let down.
Adventure Foodie
This place has the most authentic thai dishes ever! My favourite would be the duck larb and som tum! So much flavor and the spices are on point too! Booking are essential for this place as it always full of people. Highly recommended place to come if you wanted an authentic and affordable Thai food.

Atmosphere: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Food: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Service: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Tasty authentic Thai. Not over sugary like Western style Thai restaurants seem to be. Basic decor. But the dishes we had were delicious and well priced. Will be back to try some other dishes we liked the look of.

I Went there for a late lunch today, this place was recommended to me by a Thai lady and i was not disappointed. I ordered some rice with spicy pork nam tock. And it was pretty darn good! The pork was tender, with plenty if fresh herb, fish sauce and sugar. Service was friendly and efficient. Can't wait to go back to try more dishes!

Tom Yum Eden is a compact size restaurant where you can experience the ambiance and food of street restaurants in Thailand. Most dishes come with big portion. I would recommend beef noodle soup to anyone who wants to enjoy a large and tasty dish here.
S&G Take Auckland
Came here tonight for a quick bite. The fish cakes are super rubbery and thin. I'm not sure what fish they're even made from as the texture is so strange. The actual flavour is good if they used fresh fish. The Tom yum soup was nice but there were only 2 prawns. For $10 it's not really good value. It's a small shop quite cute and the waitress was nice .

Tom Yum is one of the oldest restaurants on Dominion Road, it is a tiny little shop with very traditional Thai decor and nice ambient lighting. The windows are always open so you can enjoy the view of busy traffic on Dominion Road and all the drama you often see regarding road rages.

The food is both traditional and Asian Fusion. Their famous dish was the spaghetti green curry which actually tasted amazing. The servers are always nice and the meals are made quickly. It's a little pricey but it is worth the service and food you get.
Paul Heard
Nice little place. Good prices. BYOW. Good food and extensive menu.
Staff were friendly. Timely service. Food was authentic and great options on menu and heat/spice levels.
Paola Gee
Came here for lunch as I've heard that this place was tiny but good... and it was.

We ordered our usual go-to Thai faves: mixed entree, yellow chicken curry and their shrimp pad Thai. The portions were really good and we weren't disappointed. I thought that the pad Thai had a weird after taste though but my friend couldn't taste that, so I don't know if it was just me or the actual dish. Nevertheless, still happy with the service and the authentic taste of their dishes. Will definitely return to try more (the table behind us also had ordered these beautiful dishes that I regret not asking them what they were called) and take the spice up a notch.
Diogo Reck
Nice Thai food in Dominion Road. Had a fried rice with crab, which was good, though the rice was overcooked, and a snapper with a delicious broth, but the fish was overcooked as well.

Despite the mistakes I still think it is a good option, because they know how to put all those fresh Thai flavours together.

The restaurant is quite small, so be prepared for queues.
Riku Kun
Went there today, ordered two meals which should have totalled $29 (per the menu - 2x $14.50), got charged $35.

Serving size was about 40% smaller than the last time we ordered the same dish in the same size.

Very disappointed.
Thomas Brick Kelly
This is the home of the BEST pad thai in Auckland. Could not recommend it more! I have been going here for years the staff are super friendly and the food is always fresh!

I had green curry there but the curry sauce was watery should be more thick and creamy.

Authentic Thai food! Especially the Pha Thai and Thai ice milk tea. Really miss the Thai ice milk tea at Bangkok and can't believe I can have this here. We ordered 2 Pad Thai (chicken & pork), tom yum fish soup and green curry chicken. Very generous on the ingredients. The bean sprouts on the Pad Thai are really raw. If you don't like it raw, you might need to request them to cook it. Friendly services.
Lex Antony Huang
Authentic Thai! I came here as my Thai friend suggested this outlet to me. I was not disappointed. I had the curry puff and pad kapraw Gai. The puff could have done with a big more flavours to make it more Thai as I found it a bit mild. Nevertheless they were good puffs.

The pad kapraw was very nice. They used Thai basil as opposed to sweet basil which is more readily available in New Zealand. It definitely was more pungent with a minty tone, and more similar to what I had tasted in Thailand.
Laura
Hard to find a Thai resteraunt that hits the nail on the head, fortunately Tom Yum has its menu perfectly set for everyone's taste buds, very satisfied with customer service along with the speed of meal after ordered. Very traditional menu and made perfectly. Would highly reccomend

We came here when we didn't know where to eat. I've always heard good places about tom yum eden but don't remember going.

We ordered Thai iced milk teas. They were really sweet but I liked it. My friend bought pork crackling from the counter for her need noodle soup and they taste so good but so bad. But good.
I ordered an oyster sauce beef stir fry with an extra crispy fried egg on the side. There was a variety of veggies in the stir fry and the sauce wasn't too sweet.
If you haven't tried a crispy fried egg, you must.
Best thing ever. Eggs are the best.

Being half Thai myself, I was delighted to have discovered this place! Everything from their Thai Menu is just delicious- the grilled bbq pork skewers are just outstanding using the right part of pork, seasoned with thai herbs and grilled to perfection every time. I am particularly a big fan of their Hot pot soups and find that it contains the most authentic taste, closest to Thailand out of all the other Thai places in Auckland.

As for service, the Thai staff are always normally polite with a smile. Because the restaurant is so cramped and tiny but busy, the staff never really has time for a chat or to make small talks but that is fine.

There are only a few tables which are set up real close to one another so taking in a big group is not recommended. If you do wish to do so, make sure you book or go in early! I normally go with just my partner and have always had to wait for a table since they're so busy.
As for the pricing, it is quite on the high side compared to the size and set up of the restaurant and service. However, the food is definitely worth it so I'd still recommend this place! A few dollars more expensive is still better than a plane ticket to Thailand right!
Rika Tristan
Small place, fantastic food, good service. Definitely my favourite Thai restaurant in Auckland.
Not an ideal place for big group or young kids due to small place. Thai beef noodle soup is the best, the vegetarian options were great, the fish was delicious. Always get my takeaways from here.
Ben Doletti
Yes food was good no doubt about it but that was the only good part of the experience, very small and cramped, we were seated at a table for four even though just two of us and felt obliged to allow people to sit there when there were no more seats, the decor is jaded and sparse and the service just average and my pet hate! the beer was not cold and served in rubbish glasses, all in all fine for a quick meal if not busy but not for an evening out.
Jaimee Lupton
One of my most favourite Thai places in Auckland.

Decor is nothing special but the food makes up for that!

Very friendly people, very very yummy food!

Dine here fortnightly. A true favourite!
Nishant Dogra
Read the good reviews and decided to get the vegetarian takeaway. Yellow curry had too much coconut milk and raw eggplant. Tofu was very chewy and didn't seem to be fresh in all the dishes I ordered i.e. Veg fried rice, stir fried veg with cashews and yellow curry. For the price I paid the quality of food was very poor.
Yusoff Kamal
Though the place is quiet small, the staff is friendly and helpful enough to make sure they can accommodate my group of 10 people.

I ordered beef phad thai and I love it. The taste is authentic (as reviewed by others) and the portion is just right for the money you spend.

I will definitely make my visit again sometime.
Jenny Ong
Been there for lunch twice in 2 weeks. Food is tasty, authentic Thai and good value for money!
Phil
Real Thai food! Similar to bangkok, if you have been to bangkok you would know that you could request it to be cooked just like that! I have been there many many times over the past years and will continue to go back again and again! Keep up the good work!
Ellie
Best Thai food in Auckland. Maybe knowmyrights went to a different place? Have been here on numerous occasions, never a fail. Great food, cheap, real thai ambiance, staff polite without being overpowering. No fault.
Rachael
Ignore 'knowmyrights', the restaurant is excellent.

The owner of the store DOES have basic-poor English skills, however the staff employed have excellent English, and both the owner and the staff understood my food requests.

Who cares anyway, you go out to eat, not to judge someones English!

The food was great, the menu is massive, with lots of choices. Seafood, beef, pork, chicken, anything.

Vegetarians and meat eaters:
They even have a separate vegetarian menu. Of, you can change anything to vegetarian, and they'll replace the meat with anything of your choice. So this place is great for meat eaters, and vegetarians.

Portion size:
All I can say, MASSIVE. Portion size is a big factor for a lot of people when eating out, espesh me. You defo get value for your money here. My main was so large, I couldn't finish it. and I ate so much I had a stomach ache home! But I couldn't stop, the food was lovely.

Money:
It is really well priced. $14 for a normal main, the most expensive main I saw was $30 from memory, that's because it was a seafood platter to share. The entrees were about $6-9.00, so cheap as.

Alcohol: They serve Thai alcohol. Family relatives gave it a try, they liked it!

Service:
What is service to you? I like being left alone to eat my meal, I don't like being bothered constantly like the large scale places. I was served by ONE person, and that's how I like it.

I really don't know what 'knowmyrights' is talking about, the food was delicious, service was prompt, the price was very reasonable and low, atmosphere was great.

The meals are tasty, yum.

It was average time to receive meals. Not waiting too long, and not waiting to little (too little indicates was already prepared and reheated).

As I mentioned, portion size was massive. Two plates worth per person.

Opening times is 5pm I believe, till late (10pm), roughly.

Closed Monday.

I loved it, and I am sure going back and taking my partner. Not too flash, Wouldn't take the queen of england, but a family meal, a random choice 'to go out' or 'cant be bothered cooking' place to go.

You won't leave unhappy.

Small joint ,real thai food and almost Bangkok.
Regan Grafton
This place is fantastic! A real find. Thai restaurants tend to be all a bit average with the same dishes done same way. This place really takes it up a notch. They flavours are great without being overloaded with sugar. It's a small place so I'd suggest you book.
Marnie Wilton
Wow! the first time I went to this restaurant I thought "this is what REAL thai food is like!" have been back many times and never disappointed. Unlike so many thai restaurants, they don't just have the "standard" dishes, they also have a separate "thai" menu (as in, in thai language) which features lots of amazing specials - I asked the waiter to translate for me as I dont speak thai. These include a delicious twist on tom yum soup (a full meal with noodles in the soup), whole snapper in tamarind, bamboo salad with crab, thai omlette - too many to mention here but each time i go i try something new. Its a smallish place, casual, BYO, friendly staff and very reasonbaly priced - in short, a winner!
Bida M
I went there a couple of times, the food arrived very late, the customer service was horrific with the waitress being the owner or someone in authority not speaking English, tried to ask for extra prawns and they ignored my request. Very nasty, being a foodie and enjoying food, i had my last worst meal there, leaving unhappy with a bad mood knowing i wasted my money and food excitement for nothing but simply bad customer service and not very nice food. Will not recommend it as there is so many other Thai restaurant who genuinely love to make food and serve customers like its no chore.
