Review No. 1 Dumpling - Auckland Central

Betty Fung
This is actually right next to Sunflower Vegan Thai in case you are confused about its exact location. Anyhow, wonderful dumplings at a very reasonable price. Steamed Xiao Long Bao (XLB, Shanghai soup dumplings) was on point. Pan fried dumplings tasted just like the ones in China. Highly recommend if you are into places that care more about the food than the decorations. The end.

Large portions. I had the spicy and sour dumpling soup. It was very tasty but had troubles eating it with their chop sticks. Not sure why but they are large and very unmanageable with the slippery dumplings.
Tasha Hetherington
Great value and delicious. Lovely mini pork buns.
Seamus Doyle
Best value for money and tastiest dumplings ever. Forget the rest of the menu order yourself 15 dumplings for 12 bucks. You won't be dissapointed.

They serve decent, reasonable price and huge plentiful meals. Try fried chicken and fried rice if u feel some other instead of dumplings

Yummy yummy. Stumbled across this gem by accident. Not a fancy eatery but a good cheap eat!! Great portions and a nice menu. Would eat here again ☺️

I love this place. Best dumplings in CBD. I recommend this to everyone. Good recommendations. Nice food.
Bailey Rowe
Combination fried rice and fried chicken dumplings - really good and very tasty. Recommended.
LORD TYLERE BAKER - PEARCE
Good food, large portions, great price and you can get yourself a free tea which is nice

Love their steam damping. Affordable
Nathan Gordon

Great dumplings and friendly service

Im surprised at other reviews re these dumplings because i thought they were great. I ordered the vege steamed dumplings. $12 for 15. Filling to dough ratio was perfect. Not doughy like other places ive tried in the city.
Bella Zheng
Very friendly service and was able to change the menu for my preferences :) I got the vegetarian noodle soup, it was so yummy and Harrison got the xiao long bao which wS also good!!
Candice Mclarin
Ordered the Chicken and Vege Steamed dumplings - they were really tasty! Would highly recommend. Good amount of filling, not too doughy. Traditional taste, not like the packet dumplings you buy. Service was also really friendly and fast. Price is also really good, $12.80 for 15 steamed dumplings.
Donna
Would not recommend the dumplings as the dough is really thick and rather hard and chewy. The fill isn’t anything special either. Their wonton soup is good though and cheap too.
Oksana Zhang
Dumplings were too greasy and pastry skin stuck together and fell apart.

However, portion is decent for the price; would recommend pan-fried!

The food is very average. The filling for their dumplings, buns and bao are very little... for the wontons i ordered today, there was only this tiny little bit of filling.. i felt like i was eating the wonton skin only.
The location is not ideal. The tables are placed on a slope.. i was bit concerned my food will fall off the table while i ate.😂
Yang Squid
Very underrated restaurant. They serve decent, reasonable price and huge plentiful meals. Try fried chicken and fried rice if u feel some other instead of dumplings

Fine for dumplings. The place is a bit rough around the edges but the food was good. Service was friendly but slow. Recommend the Shanghai dumplings (#17).
Linda Jirayu
I love dumping but not from here. Their pastry is so thick and tough to get to the filling. No seating outside. Cheap eats but highly not recommended.

I have been coming here for 2 years now.
Please get the Shanghai small stuffed pork buns 上海小笼包. I’m from shanghai and I’ve got to say these are the most authentic in New Zealand. Dip it in some vinegar and it’s the most delicious thing you’ve ever had. Their other dishes are good but the small pork buns are heaven. It’s very cheap too and they steam them to order so you know it’s fresh.

Tucked away off high street with two other restaurants. Good serving sizes for what you pay. Food can take a while to come. Self serving condiments, utensils and green tea

This has been a weekly haunt for me over the past 2 years (soon to end as my work life takes me to different pastures). It has bad and good days, it is a little slow and the decor is basic... however for basic Chinese dumplings, baos and soup there is no other place I would go in the city. If you like simple unpretentious Chinese food this is your place. A plate of bao and bowl of chicken and sweet corn soup is less than $11....just be ready for the occasional fail. Take the good with the bad and enjoy the ride.
🌹
Best dumplings in Auckland CBD! Price is just right and one plate of $12 can easily fill two people.
Only downside is the LOOOONGGG wait for them to get served despite only having 1~2 customers in store - understandable considering the dumplings are freshly made.

Delicious chinese food located within Auckland CBD. Loved the fried beef in black pepper and the veggie dumplings. The self service aspect is great whereby you can pour your own Chinese tea and take as much as you want, inclusive if the chilly sauce and soy sauce. It's a cosy little place in high street and my friends and I really enjoyed our meal. 🌟🌟🌟

An authentic Chinese eatery hidden on high street, no.1 dumpling makes quite an extensive range of Chinese steamed buns/baos; dumplings, wontons, noodles etc. that are made out of wheat. We had the pan-fried buns and the Shanghai soup-filled buns, however both were quite disappointing. The soup-filled buns had ripped skin, thus all the juice were lost. The pan-fried buns also had a very thick skin and wasn't very crispy. I also ordered a mini-wonton soup and it honestly had negligible meat in it... Therefore, albeit the cheap price, I would reconsider coming back.

Ordered take away for a Friday afternoon work lunch, as I was craving dumpling.
The order was made promptly and everything was steaming hot when it was delivered.

If you like your Chinese spicy, this place packs a punch! We ordered the spicy beef noodle soup and the spicy shredded pork.
It doesn't come with a spice level option, so if you can't handle the jandal then I would recommend asking specifically for mild.

The shredded pork wasn't that crash hot. The pork was a little soggy and the taste was pretty bland. The chilli chicken was delicious! With the peanuts adding great texture to the dish and the sweet chilli flavour giving it that added kick.

The dumplings were sooo good! The best thing on the menu by far! (Guess that makes sense considering the restaurant is called no.1 dumpling😅). I would go back to this place again just for the dumplings alone, they were that good.
I ordered the steamed pork and chives and they were deeelish!

Highly recommend you check this place for your dumpling fix. Not sure I'd recommend venturing out to try the other dishes, but if you have any favourites I'd love to try them so let me know!
We came here around 5pm on a Saturday for a quick, inexpensive late lunch and went away satisfied. The place is budget, with a basic decor, cheerful yellow chairs and a numbered photographed menu on the walls in the service area.
The dumpling soups went down quickly and the springrolls, though of the typical supermarket variety were cooked well. We'll probably come back as the location is convenient.
Most of the other customers were getting takeout.

We came across No 1 Dumpling when looking for something a bit different for lunch. 15 pork, prawn and chive pan-fried dumplings for $12 is good value. These pot stickers were quite nice, even if fried a little too crispy and leaving an oily finish. Cutlery and condiments are self service but we had to ask for soy sauce. The seating area is a bit grotty and the floor is on a slope so things tend to slide along the table top.

Yummy food but poor service. Only one guy behind the counter and constantly disappear. Kinda like food court, price is really cheap though. Would come back for a quick bite or takeaways.

I am a huge fan of asian food and I usually wander around streets of Auckland in search of good and authentic asian food. This place is definitely not a looker but the food here is really good. I loved the dumpling here. I would definitely stop by here soon.
Veganista
We came here for dumplings which we were assured were vegan. The place is self-serve when it comes to cutlery/condiments/water, and is very basic. However the man who served us, who I am assuming is the owner, was very friendly. The dumplings were delicious and the first pan-fried ones we have had that were actually crispy.

I've only ever been to No 1 Dumpling using a voucher and so my value-for-money is no doubt biased.

The dumplings were as nice as regular dumplings can be. The corn soup has been a hit and miss; sometimes it's nice and creamy and other times can be really watery. The spring rolls, however, have been consistently of good quality (though it's probably straight from a frozen Shore Mariner box from the supermarket).

Definitely recommend this place next time you see it on Grabone or Treateme

I went to this place with my colleagues today for lunch .. Nice place .. dumpling were yummy and nicely cooked. Just one complain waiting time was too long..
Ryan
The food was a little greasy but it came out quickly and the service was very polite. It has a bit of a food court feel to it with plenty of seating, good for a quick cheap meal.
Dianca Mitchell
Not super great but alright for a quick meal. The chicken noodle dumpling soup was bland and the dumplings themselves had a very thick coating. The only redeeming dish was the braised pork which was delicious and full of flavour- for $10 it's pretty decent!
Victoria
Affordable and what you see is what you get. The couple that works here were lovely and even though the food wasn't the best in the world, it was good for something quick and easy. We dined in but would probably just pick something up for takeaway if in the area.

We ordered noodles and dumplings and finished them - so not the worst quality you can get!
Audrey
Ordered the dumpling noodle soup. Soup didnt taste good. Had a very average taste and although it was accompanied by chilli oil which usually lifts soup flavours, it was still only ok. Dumplings were ok and would probably taste better if they were panfried, but they were really small.

I visited this place a few days ago, without deliverate intentions and wanted to get this rating over and done with. A workmate wanted some dumplings and wanted to go to this place as we were just passing by. I insisted but to no prevail. Simply...No. Not my cup of tea. Hygiene was absolutely poor. Birds flying around and dishes not removed from the tables. The service was poor, not much communication. Worst of all, the meat in the dumplings were empowering with a strong nasty taste. Much like a few day old blood cooked in the meat in my opinion. That was the first and will be last of me visiting that place again. No.

You get what you pay for... And then some.

The good: $10 noodles is probably one of the cheapest prices you will find in Auckland, and it wasnt half bad.

The bad: Took forever; there was only two of us waiting for food and it took about 25-30min. Too long for a bowl of noodles. Also, place could be cleaner, and use cleaner bowls and cutlery. Could be just stained for longterm use but nevertheless needs replacing.

The shocker: The guy serving us had his thumb in the soup as he was serving it; not sure if it was an one off event or if its just something he does to mess with people. Wasnt a fan, even if it was with the best intentions at heart eg checking that the soup was warm enough or to add flavour.

As I said, you get what you pay for... And then some... In this case, a thumb.

Two Yums for two thumbs.

I've been here a few times with grabone vouchers with no issues. This time, it was all you can eat dumplings with my workmates. It's pretty cold but the dumplings and chilli will soon warm you up. A pretty affordable price. Dumpling skins were thick but good for the price. Looking over at other tables, it's evident that they have a variety of little snacks which looked pretty good.

Been there a couple of times with friends and family, have to say the place is not really easy to find but the food they offer are really nice especially the prawn dish!

Worst experience I have ever had in my entire life. Bought a Groupon voucher for 2 for $29 the guy actually grabbed our phone and started scrolling through it and then refused the voucher even though it was already bought. He then yelled on the phone to his manager for 10 minutes and shoved his phone at me saying "you talk". Will never ever go there again. Horrible service and gross place as well.
Lh
Appalling service. I went here with a friend with a voucher I had purchased that morning from Groupon.co.nz that was 2 for $29. As I arrived, an unwelcoming man snatched my phone off me to look at the e voucher on my phone and told us the deal had ended 2 days ago, even though we had bought it this morning. At this stage I was quite angry, he then started to say we were lying and that we had lied about a $29 voucher.. So I asked for a refund and he called his manager, who he then put on the phone to myself and started telling me to tell the chef what I wanted. Very unprofessional and rude, still didn't give a refund so just walked out. The place didn't seem too nice either. Worst place I have ever experienced.

At a first glance, it may not be the most welcoming place, but their dumplings sure are welcoming. I had their chicken and vege dumplings and their dumplings are tightly packed. Loved the random love-heart shaped plates; it made me smile whilst eating! You can arrange your own soy sauce to dip with- add a bit of the chilli vinegar for a little spicy kick :)

There were lovely twins that worked there when I last went. They were sweet and helpful when I was reading through the menu.

Fantastic dumplings full of filling and delicious, awesome combination fried rice also, we get these two dishes every week, the food is very well priced, and the people here are very friendly and sweet.
Thank you to all at no.1 Dumpling!

It is mentioned the guys are doing delivery...
I called to confirm and I've been told in a very unpleasant way that they aren't doing delivery...

No customer service skills! Extremely disappointed!

Unpretentious little Chinese eating place in High Street. I'm vegan, and have only eaten the dumplings, so naturally my experience is limited, but the dumplings are cheap and tasty and I don't have any complaints. This shop position is prey to unsuccessful food businesses, so I just hope they manage to stick it out!

Went here on a voucher as dumplings are my favourite food and I was really looking forward to this! Huge disappointment. The chicken and corn soup was ok, but pretty unsubstantial. The spring rolls had a token gesture of filling in them - you were basically eating just fried pastry. But the dumplings which we ordered pan fried were disgusting. Hardly any filling and once you bite in, all you could taste was a mouthful of oil! I didn't think pan fried meant deep fried! We left half of our meal uneaten, which I've never done. Be warned.

Went here with a deal voucher and was so impressed by how yum the food was for what we paid wow! It's just a little casual food-court style place but convenient location, friendly and helpful service and AMAZING yum dumplings. We had an absolute feast for cheap. Loved the pork buns too! Great place to go for a lunch if you work nearby. I will be back!

Grabbed a deal voucher and took the husband and kids for a Saturday lunch. The food was lovely the service fast efficient and very polite and the toilets very clean. Lovely little cafe would go back if heading into town again with or without a voucher, still very cheap. Recommend to all.

The girls from PreLOVED boutique and I have checked this place out a few times over the last month. We've ordered everything from Soy Milk, vege pan fried dumplings (mine...and they were so yummy!), chicken/pork dumplings and a very large and delicious noodle soup. This place was CHEAP. The food is tasty and quick to get on the table :) Great portions and definitely something to try out if you're ever walking down Lorne street :) There's also a vegetarian and vegan restaurant next door that I am so keen to try out!!

We actually went there before they had officially opened in the morning (whoops!) but they kindly agreed to cook some dumplings up for us anyway which was so nice of them. We ordered the pork and prawn and chive dumplings as well as the chicken and vege filling ones, both kinds boiled because I still had a sore throat so pan-fried wouldn't be a good idea. Both were amazing with delicious fillings and some aromatic broth or clear juices inside each dumpling. They're not as prettily pleated as the ones you make at home, but the dumpling skins are not too thick but not too thin and the fillings are seriously the best fillings I've had in any dumplings in any eatery in New Zealand so far. The chicken and vege was more delicately flavoured but smooth with all the components of the filling chopped up finely. The pork, prawn and chives had a stronger flavour thanks to the generous amounts of pork. Definitely recommend, and at $10 or under for a plate it's a healthy filling meal that's scrumptious to boot.

I went to No.1 dumpling as I had bought a voucher from Treatme. The voucher included chicken and corn soup, spring rolls and dumplings. The bowls of soup were large and tasty but not anything special. The spring rolls were the small size (like from the frozen boxes) and had a low filling to pastry ratio. They weren't bad, but I wouldn't buy them again. We chose the beef & onion and pork, prawn & chives, pan fried. The dumplings were a little greasy but overall OK. Definitely not the best dumplings I've had by a long shot. Would I buy them again? Probably not. The same voucher recently became available but I was not even a little bit tempted. I won't be going back.
