Review Bikanervala - Auckland Central

Great taste, great atmosphere, highly recommended

Choosing is difficult! The good thing about Bikanervala is that it offers plenty of choices. This can also be what causes difficulty - in deciding what to order! This place serves South Indian, North Indian and Indo-Chinese items - snacks, main meals, sweets.....everything. But only vegetarian. We had 4 different items between 4 people, and all were good. The service was prompt and efficient. The one problem I noticed is that the chairs move on the floor - they seem to dance, with very little friction between the chairs and the floor. We had to be very careful, but managed it through the time we were there.

3 years later had something that tasted so close to home. Thank you for an amazing brunch. Looks like prices have changed recently but this meal was worth it.

Very nice presentation of food, yummy too. We ordered chaat platter in which except samosa chat, I loved everything else. Good balance of flavors

I only come here for Mithai & Jalebi. The Jalebi was fresh & yummy. The mithai all well prepared & never disappoints. Also you can just mix a variety & they charge the weight which is great if you want a whole different kind.

Nice snacks. Staff is very friendly, made non spicy for me. Reasonable price.

Poor customer service, the guy at counter was totally confused and took more than 20 minutes to pack 2 kgs of sweets.........so poor

Ladies staff is very rude not interested in customer service. I have seen first time this type of lady at counter.

As always, absolutely delicious. Wish there was one based in Takapuna.

I was here today and ordered a cheese pizza to take out. I paid $8 for a tiny pizza (not even 20 cm in diameter!!!) Very expensive for what I got and not much to it :(
Dhiren Bajaj
Too much oil in the food in spite of requesting them , rude staff who don't accept their mistake :( won't be going back

The worst customer service I have ever received in New Zealand....specially on diwali....the guy on counter taking money was so rude...I don't feel gud to post this on this special day but I want other people to know and don't be upset by going there.....we went there to buy some MITHAI but we end up with another shop.....

Not bad

A decent place with a variety of options. Parathas are the best. Tried their chole too. Thali is kinda ok. Worth the money.

The staff were really rude. Unhygienic, she was eating snacks while sitting on the counter infront of us and dropping the snack on herself and the floor. She didn't talk to us politely. There was water bottles on all the tables, we had a sip of water from our table, it tasted really old and dirty, so we asked the lady (who served us on the counter) to give us fresh water, she just picked up the water bottle from the table behind us and gave it, which tasted just as old. Not to mention we asked for medium spicy food but they made it really really spicy! Would recommend the staff to have better customer service skills, should hire someone experienced with customers. Because that put us off from eating in there ever again.

The lunch with idly Sambar was the best in the world and will come back next week

When ever I order something whether it is not good or smelly food. It’s happening again and again. It was a good place but now it’s so bad. This time I decided not to buy any more stuff from this place.
Tom
Reminds me of a place of utter disregard so service and cleanliness. It is quite overpriced and dirty

Went there yesterday afternoon at 4.30 PM. Ordered special thali and Amritsari thali. Dal wasn't tasting good at all, completely rotten slice of onion in the salad. The spoons were not clean at all.
I did complaint about that to the staff and hope they will let the Chefs know and check the quality of food before they serve. The quality of food we get was really bad and prices are too high.

Went there last week, thought we'd try the place out and all I can say is, this is an absolute disgrace to Indian food/cooking.

I didn't even bother taking photos of the food, as that's how bad it was.

The dosa wasn't anything like I've had before, the sev puri was soggy and lacked any sort of flavor.

The Lassi was bland, it was like the milk was spoilt and there was salt instead of sugar in it.

Plus the toilets weren't very hygienic either it's like they haven't been cleaned in months, there was actually no hand soap there which I think is appaling.

Management better do something for the up-keep of this place before people start making phone calls to check for cleanliness, health & safety, ratings etc.

Very very disappointed 🚫

Will definitely not be going back here. And for all those people that read this, there are plenty of other lovely restaurants literally all within 10 minutes of this place.

Ambience : ⭐
Food : ⭐
Staff : ⭐⭐
Quantity : ⭐⭐

This place was great when it first opened however since then it has gone down a slope, the prices have gone up, the tables and floor is very outdated and old with little bits and food and dirt stuck everywhere. It’s good for small bites and takeaway sweets. I wouldn’t recommend eating here.

Bought Palak Panner, it lacked salt or any spice, it was just predominantly made of spinach mash and fresh cream. I’m still going to try it one more time giving them a chance and see if this is their standard. Overall I was not really happy.

Worth going this indian restaurant and trying variety of dishes.
I liked chaat, it was very good with perfect blend of yogurt and sauces/chutneys. Would not say anything about consistency as my experience has been different everytime.
Cholle Bhature no way close to actual taste from India.
Noodles no good either.
Idli and sambhar were good that day.
Best was mango kulfi. Must try... Really good.
Akshay Divate
We tried the Raj Kachori and it was absolutely disgusting. Ingredients were not fresh. They didn’t add green chutney as they had run out of it and the sweet chutney was a bit too sweet with a hideous after taste. Overall, it shouldn’t have been served to a paying customer and I feel like my money was stolen. Definitely not going back.
Joy
I usually go for Raj kachori but hated this and left it like this; The taste has changed big times;Bad food and worst service; this place used to be good years ago but now things have changed; nothing is worth; total waste of time and money; staff completely ignores what you asking; this place has lost its charm; will never go back to this place again.
Sheryl
I came in and tried the butter paneer! It was really yum! I totally recommend!
The service was great and it was just a little bit packed at lunch time.
Shinal Shivanghni
Very nice service, fast and consistent.. no mistakes when ever I have been. Always see a smile on each staffs face feels welcoming.. the food was steaming hot and drink was amazing...

Now I'm not surprised as to why this place was literally empty when we went in. Large place, plenty of seating areas & counters.

The staff were distracted first, but polite. 3 people ordering multiple dishes, we don't get anything beyond a single spoon/fork in the dish unless asked - tissues, extra spoons & forks, the water bottle's on tables but you have to go get glasses from somewhere in the middle of the seating area - now, imagine how inconveniencing this would be if it were fully packed. Table service, yes, but they need to rethink it since it's not full & proper.

Impressive menu with lots of options and we did try various dishes - Samosa Chaat, Butter (barely any) Masala Dosa, Pani Puri, Dahi Puri, Aloo Parantha (raw dough in parts) and Paneer Tikka. Good quantity, pretty damn appetizing in their presentation but mostly subpar in taste. Prepared fresh but not all of ingredients were that; they probably came packaged.

The washroom's another ordeal, too. Not only is it further than your car's probably parked, it's shared with a medical facility (fine) but has no hand wash liquid/soap.

Happy to say we're never returning but what a waste of money & time in realizing that.
Emily
We decided to try this place after many a night driving past and seeing it packed to the brim. We went for lunch and ordered the vegetarian platter, it was very delicious and each small dish was packed with flavour. Service was okay... the employees were not personable however, almost seemed annoyed when we asked questions about the menu. The menu isn’t in English, so it takes a bit of guessing. Wouldn’t hurt them to be helpful or even smile once in a while. We also took away some of their Indian sweets, which were also very good.
Ambience isn’t pleasant, and to be honest it didn’t seem very clean. All in all, definitely wouldn’t return for ‘dine in’ but would return for good Indian takeaway food.
Gastrophilist
Would definitely give more if they can improve on cleaning. Its too bad especially if you are coming using stairs from underground parking.

They have best samosas in Auckland which is such a relief. Closest we can find to what we are used to from India. Thali's are good too and are worth their price. Sweet options in thali's are not great which can be improved otherwise its perfect. Have tried some of their sweets for special occasions and found them to be good.

It could be such a great place only if they can focus more on cleanliness.

First of all the serve very good rasmalai which i often go for,but the customer service is really really worst. I once had dosa where there was lot of HAIR in it which i went and told them and they didnt even bother to put a word that it wont happen again and no apologies . Secondly, they dont make an effort to come serve it to your table rather shout your order from the counter even when there are absolutely no customers. The guys working there will see customers waiting but still dont ask us for the orders.

Just save your money. Some of my food tasted off and did not seem fresh. I will take my money elsewhere. I haven’t been to this establishment in a while and I can see it has gone downhill. Hope they pick up the quality and service.
Himanshu8787
Great place to pop in and specially when you are hungry with bunch of friends. Tandoor and chat items are really good but the quality of some items are compromised.

In past i have had really good RASGULLAS and were fresh all the times, unfortunately this time they were smelly and tasted sour. Pani puri water was delish but the puri in whole was a let down as puris wernt puffy.

Might go next time but not for the above.

Where to start with this one.. Went here with our family and baby for some afternoon snacks around 5pm. The restaurant was completely empty, three guys were standing around doing absolutely nothing, why don’t you offer to bring food to the customer instead of placing it on the counter and staring at us!! The food was actually nice, we ordered a few chaat items and a thali. However, this place is absolutely filthy!! The baby chairs were virtually unusable, covered in disgusting stains, obviously not wiped down. The water glasses were covered in dried food and finger marks as though the dishwasher water was not changed. The soft seats were low and sunk in when you sat in them. The back of the restaurant stinks of rotten garbage / urine (sorry!). This place needs a massive clean and do-up or someone is going to get seriously sick 🤢
Anil
Fresh and good food good service such a big range chat pati chat variety of sweet and at the end dessert so many variety i
Love this place my favoritee dish paneer kathi roll and hara bhara kebab and faluda milkshake
Shihana
Indian snack tiffin food at its best. Warm welcome with the all the food in the display. With so much food displayed makes you want to eat more. Budget friendly and worth every dollar for the quantity
Minakshi Gupta
They offer a wide variety of sweets and they are delicious (the ones I have tasted).. especially the Kala Jamun and the Moong Dal Barfi. One should definitely try samosas here.. loved them! The Chole Bhatoore, Mysore Masala Dosa are good ( although I think the orange chutney of the dosa was a little spicy ). The Hara Bhara Kababs were below average. Haven't tried their Chaats yet, but I am planning to have them in my next visit. I have been here a number of times, and I think its a decent place to go if you like Indian fast foods and sweets.

Enjoyed with Friends
would like to visit again
Good service
overall nice place to have food with family and friends............
............
Divya Nagappan
Food quality has hit an all time low. Been here many times and the chutney is always off. The restaurant itself is kinda dirty and the food is mediocre if that.
Maegan Tan
Pretty authentic indian food. Generous portions and has a huge variety from north to south indian cuisine, sweets and treats. Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Aashish Trivedi
Totally disappointed with the standard of the food. Sorry to say but the kathi Roll was absolutely disgusting and seems as if the chefs don't care. A total disappointment and will never go back.
Sriram Annayan
I wish I could give this place 0 but unfortunately there is no option in Zomato. Well where shall I start ? The elderly man at the counter just said that the hand wash area was not managed by them and it's not their business to check if there is soap and this is surprising for me because you run a food business and you don't have a hand wash !!! Very RUDE !!

Now about the food ! What can go wrong with DOSA ? Yes dosa .. the batter had so much salt, haven't had so much salt all week 😂. The Chole Bhature had its masala burnt and the special thali was not so special. All in all this place Should honestly close down and stop being a disgrace for Indian food.

I am very sorry to be so blunt but the way these guys treat you there taking your own money is unacceptable!
Rohit
Food was good when first opened. Quality over the years has declined. Customer service is a joke, food is below average for a vegetarian restaurant.
Logesh Balasubramaniam
Food taste is below average. Indo-chinese items were not restaurant quality. Chat items were average. Pav bhaji is the only item enjoyable. Cleanliness and maintenance if the place is awful.

Visited this restaurant on Saturday night to order Rabri Kulfi Falooda and was baffled by what I actually got instead. It was plain zarda (yellow) rice with a bit of milk in it. Unless this is how it's prepared at this restaurant I found it pathetic how you can add simple ingredients and sell it for a good $6.50. If I must also mention, the amount of milk was poor enough that it was finished in just 2 sips while the rice was still to be finished! Most places that I've been to serve falooda with some fruits, jello, and ice cream but clearly not at this place for sure. I know for sure now that this restaurant would not be on my list again to visit.

Had high expectations but disappointed. Ordered Choley Bhature but it was no where near expectation. Very dry bhature with average choley. Bhature very too different as we generally think. Not at all worth it.
But masala lassi was good.
I know I cant get the same indian taste but it was no where near to that taste.
Think before you spend on this particular.
Vikram
Affordable and excellent "real" Indian food. Who needs meat when food tastes this good? We all had chole bhature - the taste and texture was excellent and the helping was very generous

For specifically Mount Roskill Branch: I went there with my partner and friend today for dinner and ordered few things. After waiting 5-10 minutes one man came with starter and passed out to us rather then putting on table and when I asked him for spoon he directed me (very rudely) towards the spoon stand in front of counter. I was surprised when I got that reaction from him. **POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE **

This vegetarian restaurant's appeal is restricted to those in the vicinity who have taken a liking towards certain specific items on the menu. The place has potential but is bedevilled by lack of a strong managerial presence or even by that of a responsible chef who can guide the kitchen when it falters. Rava Masala Dosa here is a plus-size savoury crepe with crunchy soft delicious appeal and the Vada Pao (potato patty burger) here is slick with butter and had satisfying well-balanced texture and taste. But your sense of pleasant discovery can be rudely ruptured by an off-taste in items like puri sabji (fried wheat discs with potato curry).

It's self-service here and though the seating area is big, the air is woefully humdrum and often the place has only a few patrons. One steadily tends to figure out that the owners do not heavily depend on this place for their livelihood otherwise it might have closed aeons ago. Bhel Puri - a puffed rice snack with zesty flavouring - is enjoyable here only when you specifically ask for it with the excess sweet-'n'-sour effect dialled down. Portion sizes are always good, and sometimes huge - Amritsari Kulcha (flavoured wheatbreads) goes for $12 for two - well-suited for a large appetite. Overall, I wish the kitchen would maintain more consistency and more taste.
Sahil Singh
Went yesterday to have chole bhature, kachori, bread pakoda and gulab jamun. Have heard that their henderson branch offer best chole bhature but am afraid their consistency isn't in all of their branches then.. Very disappointed with overall experience.. Very mild taste with less salt in chole, kachori was fine but bread pakoda was not good either.. The only reason have given 2.5 is because of friendly customer service and gulab jamun that deserves good rating, otherwise would have rated not more than 1. They are short staffed too in regards with frontline staff.Definitely not keen to visit again. 👎
Divij
Food was stale and had bad smell. Low in quality and taste. Will not recommend to anyone and will not go in future. And also the food was too spicy to eat.
Gemma Leigh
I really enjoy the onion masala dosa and rava masala dosa and sambar is okay too. Rava masala dosa tastes fresh and delicious 👌🏻 been there 7 times
Priyanka Silswal
A big disappointment to me not once but twice.... If you are craving for authentic indian chaat and paani puri then this is not the place, the cutneys they give you is all sweet... And with aloo tikki no green chutney at all...
Well this time its not the chaats but the sweets... I was craving for gulab jamun and rasmalai, we ordered it online and then my husband went to pick it up... Holy shit what i found was the milk in ras malai was sour... We immediately called them and my husband went to return it... How can they sell milk products without even tasting it and without even know what they are selling..
It was a big disappointment for us being an indian coz in india bikanervala holds a good reputation... Please dont sell this kind of food..
Diogo Reck
Fair Indian food. Far from the best I tried in Auckland, but still good. Could be less oily, specially considering that it's a vegetarian restaurant.
Nikhilthirkateh20
Terrible place to Eat. A big rip off. They can't do this in Auckland.Attitude of staff towards customers is absolutely shocking. I wouldn't recommend anyone to dine in or take away.
Chetan Mani
I tried two times food from BIKANERWALA MT ROSKILL
Both time very disappointed from their customer service (no smiling on faces ) seems like we did something wrong by coming inside.
No taste in any food i dnt know why are they spoiling brand name like bikanerwala
They really need to work on their food taste
Tried dahi chat n they pit too much dahi n taste like only dahi
Tried samosa chat then again just too much dahi
Tried amritsari kulcha its just for the name its called amritsari kulca not even closed to by 10percent of real amritsari kulca and chick peas they served with it was really dry and tastless which not supposed to be dry..
Why not they reduce their menu and just make what speciality their chefs having.
Not coming back now to try any thing and waste my money
Harsh Saini
It's been an year in Auckland and today was my first visit to Bikanervala. I had chole bhature which I found far better than any other Indian restaurants in Auckland.... Malpoa rabdi was delicious too. It has ambience like any other Bikanervala in India and the prices were economic too.
Mad Race
Worst experience ever
Very disappointed with the food and the quality of service they provided.First of all they did not took our order properly.
As we dinned in ..their hygeine was a big concerns ..fruit flys were flying over on our food which we were served .

Harshit Trikha
Hi guys today I went with my wife to this restaurant as I heard that these people give navaratri speciall. We order navaratre aloo tikki as she was fasting since morning I thought lets dine up here and eat. But these idiotic people served the orginal aloo tikki which have the normal stuffing. It was so irresponsible of them . I seriously suggest you please dont go there as their as they play up with a common man beleif. The lady on the counter was saying that ghe stuff is like that and by mistake chana dal stuffong was done in it. They are just making money by giving the wrong food and compensating it by not taking money from you . I am just sharing my experiences with you guys.

Great place, I love the food and prices are very reasonable. You must try Chat items specially Pani Puri and Sev Puri, Must visit place for Indian Street food served in a decent decor
#1
This place has good ambience and dessert. North Indian dishes are good. Time to take orders is long. Overall, a fair place in a prominent corner.
Purnima Sudha
The snacks and sweets such as Ras Malai are good, but please pay attention to your main dishes. Sometimes i find hair in them which is pretty disgusting. Also, you have raised your prices, and am willing to pay but please don't compromise your quality. On the other hand I really like the ambience.
Sanket Patel
I went to bikanervala with my friends and his relatives, they have been here for a week and i brought them to bikanervala and they said they never had worst food than this in auckland. And on top of that rubbish service.
I Am Hungry
you cant call this place a restaurant....horrible food..horrible attitude..horribly over priced.....sorry you cant rip off people like this...not in auckland
EssJay
Used to be nice and clean and affordable. It's all the opposite now. The place looks empty and run down, there is nothing below $7 a plate for small quantities they serve. If you plan to go with friends and order different items the price adds up quite quickly.
Zoupitup
Decent food - nothing special - had them cater an event where they were phenomenally awesome! Mithai selection is good. My fav is the makki roti and sarson ka saag. The breads when fresh are beayootiful! So good they deserve an error in spelling!
Henry Patel
Good Food. Great price & good variety. Efficient service and food comes out fast pipping hot!
Staff are very friendly.
Loves the sweets/ desserts
Zane Marjorie
The food here is fine, especially if you're in a hurry, but is not top notch. If you're in the area and want to try Indian veg, go ahead, but be aware this is more of a "fast food" Indian than a real wholesome meal.
Top pick - Snack foods such as samsosa, samsoa-chat and kachoris can't go wrong. Dosas are also pretty good here.
R
Great food, all sorts of indian sweets and variety of vegetarian food.

Lovely place to dine at.

Although there is seating, you order at the counter and pick your food up yourself.
Clint Kaiser
Service was pretty ok. The food was great. Loved the naan bread n punjabi thali. The staff was nice n friendly. The special kheer (rice pudding) was delicious. The price was very reasonable. The snacks looked great.
Overall very happy n satisfied.
Highly recommend for unique Indian taste.
Sunil Raj Dogra
I like White Swan Road"s Bikanervala not Papatoetoe". That's nice to have India's taste. Only blot is customer service.
NomNomPanda
The food here is okay, but nowhere near the standard of our favourite South Indian restaurant, Ras Vatika, which is more central, cleaner, and only a little bit more expensive. Also, Bikanerwala is definitely more of a takeaway. Although there is seating, you order at the counter and pick your food up yourself. There is a separate counter for picking up drinks and chaat (masala tea comes from a machine). I was shown where I could collect cutlery, and most of the utensils were dirty. The tamarind chutney with the chole bhature was actually quite nice, but the tomato and onion uttapam we ordered was undercooked and soggy. Each dish was more than we could eat, and the prices were cheap, but would definitely recommend Ras Vatika over this place, unless you were after something they don't have, like sweets.
Niya Bhatt
The food is good and there is a good variety here for vegetarians. The customer service is good too. I was a regular here but recently the portions sizes have become smaller. The untidy toilets also put me off this time around. I would not go here again nor would recommend it to my family and friends.
Diana C
I've read the other reviews and I can see that there is some merit in them.
But I have to say that we had a fabulous meal. Six of us. Three of us had Thalis/platters. Three different ones. More than enough food for one person and they ranged in price from $14-$16 and included a sweet.
My daughter had Shahi Paneer and Nan, which cost around $10 in total and my son had a Pizza (he refused to eat Indian and they have Pizzas and Chinese food). I suspect an adult wouldn't find one bowl of Shahi Paneer and Nan bread enough to eat. But at $10 what do you expect.
The food was DELICIOUS. It's self-service and the meals don't all come together. The man on the till could do with some customer service training, but other staff were good. There is a fabulous sweets counter and we took a box of sweets away.
The young woman on the sweets counter gave my kids tasters, which was good customer service.
This is a chain restaurant from India (which has a few overseas branches) so the food really is what people eat in India.

It is a nicer looking restaurant than the Dosa Plaza in Mt Roskill, but still a bit of a fast-food joint.
True Indian
I have been regulary visiting this place from the day it was opened. I have to admit that service is not great anymore and they have reduce the portions. Now I need to order 2 items. Also I tried Mithai next to Xotic yesterday. Though the ambience is not excellent but Chaats & thali was great and at a price that suits my pocket.
Pritika Sharma (Veg)
- Food is good, wide range of choices
- VERY POOR customer service.
- when 2 people order, their food does not come out at the same time.
- VERY small Portion size.
- Menu does not indicate if rice / naan should be ordered separately.
- Both dishes were very hot.
- Toilets - could have been cleaner
- Very expensive.
Sir
Staff's behaviour is not professional, they need to be trained for customer services, they r rude. majority of the dishes offer insufficient portion for one meal, their cholay baturas r expensive, less in quantity and not as delicious as compared to the one at Exotic mt. Albert.

prices are very high as compared to the quantity of food served. if they want to be in business they need to review the prices and quantity of food.
Roonie
Food is good...good veg option but yes I agree service isn't the best by a mile...They were nice when the place originally opened
Steve
We had the same experience, only they said they had no milk to make the tea, we offered to get some from the dairy across the road! Foods ok but staff need some customer service training, they are not working in India any more (I'm from India).
Priya
I was disappointed on my recent visit to this restaurant. I was told they would not take my order for tea as they were simply too busy n would not make it on second request they said to wait for 45min. some service
Ron Kumar
I went to this place a couple of times for dinner. I did not enjoy at all. Food was below average and customer service not great. None of my family members like this place. Sure it’s poor in our view.
Priyanka
Bikanervala is the only restaurant that I would always want to go every weekend with my dad. The reason I go there is because I just love the food and sweets they make. The snow ice is amazing especially chocolate death and coffee but they have stop making it which is why I stop going there but another thing I love is their samosa chaat that is now my all-time dish whenever I go there it’s amazing for me but everyone has different viewpoints because my mum dislikes it.

I’m disappointed about their chairs because they slip easily because one day my mum sat on one of the chair and fell down which I recommend people to sit on the sofas on the sides to avoid falling down. That one negative thing I found but the restaurant smells really nice because of the burning incense stick in front of the god’s idol. Lastly but not the least this restaurant is pure vegetarian so thumbs up to the all vegetarian people this is a great restaurant for you.
