Review Ollies Ice Cream Parlour - Auckland Central

Tovia Va'aelua
This is a staple for our family given that its less than a kilometre from home. The team is always attentive but stress-free and the ice cream is always good. Their food is also good for a quick bite between school finishing and club training runs. Give it a go when you're next at tue Royal Oak roundabout.

Glad this place is still here and now I can see why! I just ate the best burger and chips I’ve eaten in forever. This includes in Brisbane Australia. I was beginning to lose hope in Auckland, which has now been restored. The burger wasn’t weird tasting with too many spices or greasy like a lot of places. The chef takes real care in what she serves. A actual old school kiwi burger ffs. Hard to find these days. Definitely coming here every weekend on a treat day. Love ❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥 Bringing my friends and family here.

Ollie’s Ice cream is a must try 🤩 I went in 5 mins till their closing time and their customer service was soo welcoming and friendly. They made us fresh food even at that hour right before closing! Our chips were fresh and crispy, their cheese burger was full of flavour too. Overall I was just very pleased with the reception we received and the fresh and delicious food we were served. 10/10 would recommend and I definitely will be going back for more 🤩

Nice dining ambience the ice cream and milkshake was outstanding and the crews are amazing! Will definitely return when I visit New Zealand again!

Absolutely amazing! The best place in Auckland for a traditional banana split (big enough for 3 people to share). The pineapple+ham+cheese toastie I had was also yum!! There's a busy roundabout along the front and it's fun to watch the traffic while you eat, too. I'll definitely be back.

A favourite place of mine for more than 40 years to enjoy a ice cream cone milk shake or fast food treats. Glade to hear the business has remained in the family and the daycore remains the same. A must do if you like ice cream 😋

Ollie's has been an icon for years, and it's always clean and tidy. Colin and his family have always provided top notch service at a great price, and you always get service with a smile. We used to buy the Ollie Dog there years ago - and it's still on the menu! Drove 2½ hours just to get a feed at Ollie's on many an occasion. If you've never been to Ollie's, do your tastebuds a favour and pay them a visit. You won't be sorry.

Best place for ice cream and thickshakes. Tons of unique flavours like Rainbow, Candy Cane, Gold Rush, and Choc Nut Fudge. Skip the fried food though and just come for dessert!

Burgers are good. Ice creams are just your average ice cream. Good to see they have done some maintenance inside. The place was a little worse for wear a few yrs back. Staff could improve on customer service a little.

This place is amazing and highly recommended. They have delicious burgers that are juicy and full of flavour. Also got the seasoned wedges with sour cream and my tastebuds were just dancing. Wanted to try the ice cream but was way too full. The ice creams did look delicious as well. (Sorry no photo/s - I was hungry and just blown away by the size of the burger that I forgot to take a picture).

Sadly we have been enjoying Ollies for years but today the service was exceptionally poor given the number of families wanting to take their Dads out to enjoy an ice cream. It wasn’t busy at all just the customer service lacking something old fashion courtesy, it’s not always about the money it’s the reputation that others before you have built that keep loyal customers returning.

I have always had ice cream scoops at Ollies and it has always been a pleasant experience, there has always been service with a smile. This time around though decided to try out their chocolate fudge cake which was way too much goodness for one person to tuck away after a big meal. The combination of the fudge and cake are absolutely what mouth watering stuff is made off, not too sweet and yet perfectly moist to go hand in hand with the ice cream. This is now my all time favourite thing at Ollies.<br/>

Was my first visit and despite being in lvl 2 lockdown, the owners there really made you feel welcome. It was friendly, quick service and the giant banana splits are well worth it! Cannot wait to come back and try something else! Fantastic. The service truly made it worth it.
Ming
Hands down one of the best ice cream places around. Had a scoop of hazelnut latte which was divine and the service was super friendly.

Burger was good. Chips tasted burnt. Shake was only half full in the cup. And was pretty average. For a place that specialises in things like this I expect better. Not cheap either, so expected good food and a really good shake
MCP
Ordered caramel fudge thickshake and chocolate thickshake for my partner. Both were watery not even tasted like milkshake and it cost $8 each!

Ollies might be the oldest ice cream shop in this area. Kids always love to eat here. My husband used to came here a lot when he was a child, now he takes our kids to eat ice cream at Ollies, nice memory.
Tony Ma
Great childhood memories. Neat place and arcade machines to play when I was young.<br/><br/>I bring my kids to eat icecream after kfc now. <br/><br/>Icecream is ok. But it’s the memories I like and location.
Laisa N Julessa
We always stop here for dessert on our way home from going out to dinner.. real friendly service and great selection of ice cream to choose from
Natasha Watson
Great value for prices, giving an average rating due to the attitude of the girls who served us ( two young girls who were standing in front of us and didn’t greet, we waited a while before another woman came to take our orders) but will be back as keen to try the giant banana split.
Munchies
Based on portion sizes, pricing and service. Seriously why the hell is it nearly $5 for a one scoop of ice cream? The ice cream isn’t made in house and neither are the cones? <br/>Especially when you can literally get the same scooped ice cream from the fruit shop down the road. Larger and cheaper. <br/>Yeah you can get hot foods as well but nothing worth talking about or you cant get from any other take away outlet. <br/>Service is pretty average keeping in mind i have visited this outlet multiple times and same sour, average service every time. <br/>Only thing good about this outlet is that its clean. <br/>Wouldn’t recommend visiting this outlet.
Tee
Ordered the regular butterscotch milkshake was super yummy, the girl who served us wasn’t friendly at all reasons for the lower rating, the other girl who was cleaning the windows was very friendly thou. Unsure if I’ll be back at this stage.

Cool little spot next to the giant roundabout in royal oak, good for dessert at night, had the banana split. T’was pretty lit, i liked the American diner style interior, feels like i was outta old regular auckland for a sec.<br/><br/>Dessert- 7.5/10<br/>Service- 8.5/10<br/>Aesthetics-8.5/10
Tasmanian
Friendly staff with generous portions also the flavours are quality and good. My favourite are butterscotch pecan and maple walnut fudge. <br/>They do flavour of the day which is a good way to start if you haven’t been before and the list of flavours is hard to choose from.

We went in for some burgers and chips, and it was below average. Wouldn’t go back again. <br/>There was only us and 1 or 2 other tables, but the food took quite a long time to come out, and the tables were dirty. <br/><br/>When we asked for a tomato sauce,<br/>They said they only had one bottle so we had to wait for the other table to finish using it. <br/><br/>Its not like it was uncooked or anything, there was nothing even slightly special about it.<br/>

Came by after dinner since we were in the area. Fairly decent selection of ice cream with choices of how you wanted it (sundae, milkshake or cone). They also have savoury food if you were wanting some. We just ordered at the counter and waited for our food before heading down to find some seats.<br/><br/>They have a decently sized seating area with a game area in the back, compete with arcades. Really nice place for kids and kids at heart.
Jagtaptejashri
I love their range of ice-creams. I would not even give 1 star for their service. The girl serving ice cream today was soo rude as if she is doing a favour.
Louise Manase
Friendly service, amazing variety of flavours maybe a tad expensive but if you are an ice cream fan like me it won’t matter it was worth it 😍
Queena
Everyone raves about this place! I always thought it was just an old building... But it’s a legit ice cream/dessert place! So cool. <br/><br/>Came in here with high expectations -especially with what’s on the menu. Had a cool American vibe to it. I got the choc fudge brownies. Was pretty average, nothing special. Could say I was a bit disappointed. It was just another dessert place but with a different vibe.

2 high school aged girls who couldn't give a care in the world about people waiting. They managed to skip making my order, served the gentleman behind me, who seemed like a regular, he received his order, then said they forgot my order and I had to relay it back to them. No smiles, or apology. Sweet corn toastie tasted expired. The 1.5 star rating is for the milkshake that was good.

Probably wouldn’t come back here again. We loved the ‘idea’ of burgers and shakes rather than the actual meal itself. We ordered a bacon and egg burger ($8) Ollie dog ($7) shakes and chips.<br/><br/>Tbh the shakes are better at maccas and cheaper. The burgers are not worth the price and they only give 2 rashers of bacon. The Ollie dog was the best but again overpriced. I’d probably only come back for the Ollie dog. We also got a fudge cake with ice cream, cream and sprinkles (don’t try it if you want to waste $9) the fudge cake from Denny’s is way nicer and cheaper and if you have a sweet tooth definitely worth the price. <br/>Overall I gave a 3 based on the experience, ambiance and the Ollie dog. Staff were alright, pretty basic customer service but nothing over and beyond.

The queue was out of the door, always a good sign. Such a great selection of ice creams, sundies etc to try, it was a hard choice indeed.<br/><br/>We were both very pleased with the taste of our ice creams, even better as what we thought we a double scoop, was only a single. Mine was melting faster than I could eat it.<br/><br/>If you love ice cream, this place is the place to check out.
L K
Wasn't as good as I expected it to be. Expectations weren't met at all. I ordered a hamburger combo which came with large fries and a drink. Hamburger was average nothing special for what it cost. You could easily cross the road go to a takeaway store and buy the same thing for less than half of what you would pay at Ollies. I personally wouldn't come back to this place. Paid around $12 for the combo.
Josephine Numanga
Great service, great location, parking is a bit tight, ice cream is so good always made how you like it, my favourite would be the giant banana split one to myself. Never had a bad experience.
Rowan Rebecca
So delicious! Only been for ice cream. So many flavours. Large portion sizes too. Have been a couple of times, only issue is the place seems often to be messy with food left on tables and food on the floor but if just grabbing an ice cream and heading off it is great.

If Ollies served beer with its burgers, they'd be busier than all the TAB joints in town. But if that happened, there wouldn't be the remarkable phenomenon of a pair of middle-school girls ambling around at 10 pm on a Saturday night with pink ice cream cones checking out the flashing game machines and a giant toy car. But even with just plain old soda, just for its simple airy high-ceilinged old-school vibe if nothing else, it's admirable that Ollie's marches on. It's 1920s-style simplicity still appeals in an era hundred years on, with its billing till pleasantly humming with customers who keep trickling in for the ice-creams, burgers and sandwiches.<br/><br/> In prior years, I'd sauntered into Ollies breezily partaking of such classically American favorites as orange soda with a dunked-in vanilla scoop and an unexpectedly good hamburger, in the days when I had not yet abjured that primally powerful fast-eat. <br/><br/>So let's say you amble into Ollies in a mood to munch on a burger but due to some insane thinking you decide not to slaughter a cow (or chicken) for your bun. What a brave idea! the sissies would never think of it. Places like Burger King are too stupid to understand what a vegetarian burger is, but wisely Kiwi Ollies packs in the show as if nothing was missing. To start with, its a nicely big burger and not the 'Honey I Shrunk The kids-'n'-burgers' imposters you get in McDonalds,Carl's Jr,Wendy's and BK. Just one quibble that I found the sauce a wee bit tart (or is it the pineapple influence) but the gripes skid to a quick stop there. The taste is voluptuous, softly mildly freshly wheaty and and a faint-bit crunchy and often one just can't figure out whether its the bun or the lettuce or the patty or the little fillings that give it that splendidly lush, breezily summery mouthfeel. Sauce drips down and the burger isn't ideal to hold cozily but great burgers do not give a damn about getting messy. <br/><br/>After that superb filler, I should have called it a day but tempted by thoughts of dessert salvation, I opted for a mochacino cone the flavour of which I'd never before tried. A giant scoop comes your way for $4-50 and while I expected it to be totally delicious, it turned out just about okay, and after a dozen big licks, there were thoughts of chucking away the whole thing but I soldiered on for the sake of poisoning myself with extra sugar. <br/><br/>Large windows, almost floor to ceiling, give you wide angle views of the pavement and the busy Royal Oak intersection just outside. Very wisely, they make use of the space to benefit the customers, not themselves, by keeping only a judicious number of tables. Teenagers handle the ordering area. The walls are white with touches of red - shiny scarlet for the suspended lights, and elsewhere a motif-like red flower. <br/><br/>You then spy Cheese Sandwich, much praised by Manoj Bajpai of "Kaun" whose mother used to make it for him. One version at Ollies toasts it and adds onion - but alas onion or not, it is way too thin, the filling is almost nothing and it just does not have that simple addictive umami that the best cheesy preparations have. Egg sandwich was similarly forgettable. Turns out, at least at Ollie's, that a good Fish Burger too, is harder to make than the the challenging Veg one. My fish burger was just average, sporting no distinction either in the marine fillet or the flavourings. <br/><br/>You can see here that my Ollie's narrative which started out so promisingly, has petered out in the later stages. Though it eventually failed to floor us with its brilliance, Ollies flattened us with its multi-faceted quantity. Giant Banana Split was our final order - the final mega-calorific nail in the coffin. We could choose our poison - 3 scoops of ice-cream - coconut mallow , jamaican lime and rum-'n'-raisin, blanketed in caramel and strawberry sauce, topped with nuts and cream. 'Twas enough for a pair of baby elephants which we finally became. Yeah that indulgent tub was different shades of nice, but we were splitting at the seams and trundled out Ollified.

Service of the ladies were absolutely amazing, correct order when it was a massive order of 8 burgers, chips, Ollie dog and drinks.<br/>The reason why not a 5 because no toilet as it is a takeaway shop it is understandable though.<br/>Burgers and toastie was so yummy even though toastie was quite burnt ...<br/>Burger was fresh lettuce and tomato which was delicious and chicken and beef burger was yum yum yum !!!<br/>Will definitely come back and have burgers and there sundae as that was so yummy too !!! Good variety of ice cream choices! !

My classic childhood ice cream shop. From memory I use to come here as a child after school and my parents would buy me an ice cream. So many flavours to choose from, and awesome place to hang out after school. I would definitely recommend.

Great selection of ice-creams, though the hot food was a bit on the pricey side.  We placed an order for an ice-cream and a toasted sandwich.  Staff were friendly but did look a bit bored whilst we paid twice as much than a regular fish & chip shop.  This place was empty when we visited during winter season but we imagine it will quickly fill up over the summer holidays as there is plenty of seating available and bus-stops nearby and within walking distance.
Jade.nicholas
I love this place, even winter wasn't enough to stop me from having ice cream. I'm fact, I had a double scoop which felt like a triple scoop because they're HUGE! I went out for dinner that night just across the road and I couldn't resist having dessert. The guy that served me was friendly and really patient as I couldn't decide on which flavours to choose. Can't wait for summer time! 👌🏽🍦🍦🍦<br/>

People who work here look like they hate their life. I was welcomed by two Inattentive workers without a smile and plenty of sighs whilst reading through the available flavours. <br/><br/>Price :7/10 <br/>Service:1/10<br/>Decor/ambience: 5/10<br/><br/>Not a place I'd come to again.
David Stuart
The surely person who took our order greeted me by nodding her head as if permission was given for me to speak. My children were polite when ordering their ice cream while she didn't smile or utter a word. Her whole mannerism exuded contempt. Like she was far too good to be serving ice cream.  When she handed me my ice cream I said thanks very much. She didn't speak or smile. Nothing. Turned and walked away. Whoever hired her to be the face of that business made a serious error. Ollies looks tired and worn out. Ice-cream was just ok.
Sylvester Kuo
My partner enjoys this place but I personally do not. Their hot food and chips were below average and you really can just buy the tip top ice cream at local supermarket.<br/><br/>However, I do like their American ice cream parlour style decoration, very homey.
Tavita Milford
Got a double scoop on a waffle cone of Cookies and cream one time, with a mate while we were hanging out in the area. And I must say their ice-cream is pretty nice, suited for the summer too. <br/><br/>The service was good, the person who served us was so generous and friendly and considering waiting in real time, it didn't even take that long to get our orders done.<br/><br/>Going inside, it looks like it's been redone. But that is only my perception, what's cool about this place is that they have a little arcade which is cool, but it also has that summer takeaway blend in it as well. You could feel the vibe of it once you're in the shop for at least a minute or so.

People just seem to love this place. I don't really know what the buzz is all about apart from it been around for a long time. I guess it does have a character feel to it and it is iconic in its history.<br/><br/>I would say many people feel nostalgic about this place. My dad bought ice cream for my mum here when they dated like waaaaaaaaaay back.<br/><br/>The store is a bit run down. The carpet is worn out, sunken and lumpy. The furniture is very worn. <br/><br/>The ice cream is just your standard ice cream that you can get at any supermarket. Cones are the same, nothing special. <br/>The sundaes are very lack lustre as well.
Jasmine Tay-Paepae
Wow! Huge scoops of ice cream that I wasn't expecting.. Nice friendly staff.. A little bit pricey though but overall it was a good experience..
LoveEatLive
HUGE scoops of yummy flavors! And at give away prices.<br/><br/>I really enjoyed my butterscotch pecan waffle cone. Which I feel I will have as a meal rather than dessert due to its size.<br/><br/>Cute little ice cream palour. Definitely a revisit if in the area.

I went to this place on my way to home. I thought to stop here and have lunch . I had chicken burger and mint shake.i ask them to have here and then also confirmed . They put in takeaway bag . Service also average nothing special . I didn't she eat burger and didn't drink shake. I throw the burger in the bin in front of this same place. It cost me $14.50 . I waste my money here also too expensive. Chicken party was too much oily and old. Will never come back here . 👎👎👎👎.

Ive come here 3 times and all have been for the thick shakes, have been with friends and family and all of the have enjoyed the shakes here! I really like the caramel fudge thick shake, nothing beats it.
Diner8Here
Ollies been around for decades and probably  older than me as i remember the site here was when  attending high school and a teacher shouted us a treat here.<br/>Place has dat old school  American diner feel  with  pinball machines inside, music and  patronized by students etc. great for after-school snacks/meetups, desserts and will always be the star of the Royal Oak roundabout, located at 5 o'clock point.'
Joan Cecille De Guzman-Lomibao
We visited this place many times now and we really had great experience tasting their ice cream... We came here last night... You can choose with the variety of ice cream and burgers, hotdogs or chips to match with... Their serving is really good... Definitely coming back...
Kristina Seiuli Ginders
Love it every time we come! Big ice cream, and food was yummy.recommended highly especially if you have a big group with you.well worth it..
Claudia
This is my favourite place to get ice cream and I love how late they open because it's always such a mission to find a nice dessert place after dinner that's still open! Their scoops of ice creams are MASSIVE and is such good value for the price. Probably wasn't a good idea to go right after dinner as I was struggling to finish my second scoop. I've never been disappointed in their flavours and its always tough to decide which ones to get since there's always around 20 to choose from. Had the boysenberry and maple walnut fudge this time and it was divine!
Monique Ohlson
The meals are super filling and with great affordable prices. I had an egg burger with a strawberry milkshake with a side of wedges. Was so full after eating the burger I was t able to eat all the wedges. The food came out quickly, fresh and hot with great appeal. The Venus itself had a very old fashioned feel which I was really pleased with. Even had old arcade games which was a bonus. Could have perhaps had booths instead of open planned tables but that's just a minor detail. I would go back there again for sure! My friend and I will certainly be back there to try out an ice cream.
Hannah Gear
A classic place to come for some yummy dessert. The staff are usually efficient enough, mostly young high school/uni students. Only problem is they are so busy the tables are normally not cleaned very often.
Ancella Gonsalves
My partner and I decided to come by for dessert, service isn't as it used to be. Girl there was more concerned with topping her drink and putting it in the fridge as she walked away taking half my order. More people walking into the place as we're eating.. There are four empty tables for people to sit but all of them are dirty. Other than the service and upkeep of the place we enjoyed a decent choc fudge cake 👌
Zaatarbella
Stopped off here for an ice cream this evening. DD#1 had banana-berry kiddie cone, DD#2 had mango kiddie cone, I had 2-scoop boysenberry in a cup, my parents had choc-dipped 1-scoop boysenberry waffle cone & 1-scoop mango waffle cone. <br/>All the ice creams were well packed into the cone/cup with really good sized scoops. Clean, well-lit and uncluttered seating area. Would definitely come here again.
Mat
My partner spontaneously decided to take me here as he knows I have a massive sweet tooth. Entering the area, we easily found parking close by- win!<br/><br/>I ordered the hot fudge brownie with ice cream and he (regrettably) ordered the giant banana split plate... My plate was enjoyable but nothing special. I could have obtained the same dish from Denny's that tasted better at a lower price.. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed it! Once I finished my plate, I helped my partner eat his as the portion was massive! Desserts here definitely suits to serve 2 people (unless you have a massive sweet tooth and stomach like me) ;)

Ollies is a bit of a local legend around these parts. I grew up around the corner from here and have fond memories of getting a few scoops every other weekend. <br/><br/>Unfortunately, Ollies hasn't aged well. Auckland now has some really good ice cream and dessert parlours. And nostalgia can only go so far...<br/><br/>They have the typical ice cream flavours you would expect. And these go well dipped in their popular chocolate sauce. If anything, Ollies is still good for a quick, local pick-me-up. But It's not the legend it used to be.
Charlene Weaver
Classic, iconic, ice-cream parlour in Royal Oak thats been around since my dad was a kid! Apparently the interior hasn't changed at all, which I personally appreciate, gives it that vintage, old-school feel. <br/><br/>Ollies serves simple, kiwi food such as burgers, chips, toasted sandwiches etc and of course a huge selection of classic, tip-top ice cream flavours such as gold rush, rainbow, banana etc which I struggle to find elsewhere. I ALWAYS order the same ice-cream flavour because I've never been able to find it anywhere else!! Coconut marshmallow - its honestly the best flavour!! Try it as a sundae with caramel sauce, nuts and whipped cream. <br/><br/>Because of this one flavour... I love Ollies!
Teryn Vissers
This is our second, and last time to Ollie's. All three girls behind the counter were very unpleasant and unhelpful. A smile would go a long way. <br/><br/>We asked for a children's ice cream of two flavours and received a grumbled response 'we don't have that flavour'. My 7 year old niece asked for two different flavours in her cup which the staff couldn't understand so they instead gave her two separate ice creams. <br/><br/>Luckily most of the ice cream is TipTop brand so at least the ice cream tasted okay.<br/><br/>We won't be back to Ollie's, where the customer service is as cold as an ice-cream. Really disappointing. <br/>
Ed
Damn the ice cream is incredibly expensive and there's nothing special about it either.<br/><br/>Honestly I suggest walking across the road to Pak n Save and buying a tub of ice cream. Not sure why people allow such price gouging ...<br/><br/>Food: 5.5/10<br/>Service: 3.5/5<br/>Ambience: 3.5/5<br/>Value: 1/5<br/>Overall: 13.5/25

Right next to the royal oak roundabout it's hard not to notice Ollies. This place has been popular for years! The staff are young and friendly. There is a decent amount of seating if you want to dine in. They not only ice cream on offer but milkshakes, hot chips, hot dogs, burgers and more. I have only tried ice cream options and love that there are so many flavours to choose from! The portioned are pretty big so it's reasonable value!
Michelle Young
Great product, bad service. Smile smile smile pls. We have been there twice in the last two nights. Awesome flavours but staff is not friendly.
Aucklandfoodlover
Most happening place in Royal Oak after 9pm. 😆😆<br/>Not a joke. Even on a cold windy day this place will be with lots of ice cream lovers. They have great different varieties and combinations of ice creams. Great friendly staff. You can try any flavour until you like something. The portions are huge. I usually go for kids scoop. My fav flavour is Gold rush.
Navneel Naicker
Huge variety of ice-cream flavours and simple but excellent tasting burgers. Open til late aswell perfect time to stop in for dessert. However the staff were either half asleep or didn't even like working. Otherwise great place.
Nik Sio
Had a pleasant experience with my visit to this iconic ice cream parlor. Ordered 6x kiddie sundaes, banana split, 2-scoop-cone. The selection of flavours ordered from raspberry fizz to moccachino was delicious, creamy and large scoops.<br/>Staff serving me was awesome.. other staff play dumb when I order large quantities or just too lazy to calculate my order but not this guy! He was patient with me and got my order right without giving attitude which is what I'm not use to. A+ customer service.
NYNB
An iconic ice cream shop I've remembered ever since I was a little kid. I would always walk past Ollies on the way home from intermediate & high school as well. <br/><br/>I think the happiest moment I ever had here was waiting in line for their $1 tip top scoops in my last year of high school. <br/><br/>There's nothing special at all about their ice cream but they have a massive list of flavours available and for very affordable prices! A (adult) single scoop ice cream is more than enough for one person. <br/><br/>The service is nice and friendly. <br/><br/>I don't come here much now due to dairy intolerance but I still love it for the odd (sometimes regretful) treat. <br/><br/>Sarah Reynolds #challenge

Went here for dinner last night and definitely would go again (in fact, I already plan on it).<br/><br/>I honestly don't know why Ollies has received so many bad reviews. No, it's not all that fancy but it's not supposed to be. The food is that of your typical kiwi fish'n'chip place, only with the benefit of being able to sit down and eat, whilst you watch the cars go round the roundabout, and maybe play a game of Donkey Kong. Definitely recommend it, especially if you haven't been before!
Neil Jones
After more years than I can recount Ollies is not only a local landmark but it is gone beyond that and become an institution for Aucklanders to come to for a treat of the many flavours of ice cream delights. Sometimes it is easy to choose others not so easy. Well priced for the joy of ice cream. Admitted that the decor could do with an update into the 2000's but still great to come and chill out for a while.
Maria Carmela
More well known for being a local landmark than a great, upstanding food establishment. <br/><br/>The tables are unwiped most of the time. You sometimes get bored, unsmiling workers who don't seem pleased to see you. The ice cream flavours are a hit and miss - sometimes great, like mochaccino; sometimes greatly mediocre, like cheesecake. Wedges and hawaiian (?) burger are decent, though. <br/><br/>I'd recommend this to anyone who's never tried it before, for the sole purpose of being able to say that they've tried Ollies. Nothing spectacular.
Khoa Le
Wouldn't recommend the hot food here but the Ice cream flavors that they offer are fantastic. Reasonably priced as well for some nice one like Butterscotch Pecan and Caramel Fudge!
Samantha Lines
I've been to Ollie's twice now. The first time was for dessert. Their chocolate fudge cake is out of this world and their ice cream sodas are crazy good. <br/>The second time I had a hot dog and my boyfriend had a burger. Neither were very good. I wouldn't drive out to Royal Oaks to have their main meals which is a shame. <br/>There was also a lack of bins around to pop rubbish into and it meant that the tables were dirty and over crowded with litter. The staff didn't seem interested in coming to clear up either and there were enough of them. They also didn't seem interested in helping us and seemed annoyed that they had to come out of the kitchen in the back to serve us. We took a few minutes to decide on our meal but were made to feel like it was an inconvenience. <br/>If you're going to go to Ollie's make sure it's for dessert and not for the savoury food or the service.
S B
I've just had an ice cream sundae from Ollies, and it was delish!  The decor at Ollies hasn't really changed in years, but the ice creams are still really good;  and this place is a local icon in the Royal Oak area.
MissEstherZ
Ice cream- anything more to add?<br/><br/>Also had some diner food, and lots of ice cream flavours that aren't normally seen. The ice cream I felt was expensive- about $6/$7 for two scoops and wasn't mind-blowing, although their food prices were alright, takeaway food such as burgers and chips.<br/><br/>I got my ice cream chocolate dipped and it was the worst mistake. The chocolate is fake- that carab stuff, and it tasted like chocolate flavoured plastic. I struggled through eating it, but my friends ended up peeling it all off and throwing it away. Don't get it chocolate dipped- you'll regret it. <br/><br/>I feel like Ollies has so much potential to have personality and to develop a really strong reputation and it just doesn't even try. It's a retro restaurant with a diner feel that serves diner food- there's not that much in Auckland and with that history too- and yet it plays radio music, has some sad looking games and sitting in the restaurant felt like I was sitting in the 90s or something, in a bad tacky this is sort of ugly way, not the I want to take an Instagram of this place and hashtag it flashback to the 90s way.<br/><br/>The table we were sitting on still had rubbish on it- and it wasn't busy. Staff not really doing anything and doing the bare minimum in customer service. <br/><br/>Ollies could so much better- treat yourself. I would say I'm disappointed, but the atmosphere of Ollies seems like it knows this too. I'm sorry! It's such a cute joint too. I am just sad at seeing how it could be so much better.@

Ollies is my favourite ice cream shop in Auckland. There is nothing fancy about it. I have grown up with Ollies living around the corner and I have never been disappointed. The majority of the ice cream served is Tip Top, but no one expects anything more from a shop that has been around for years with the same one owner. <br/><br/>Tucked in Royal Oak, Ollies also serves burgers and fries etc but everyone comes for the huge scoops of ice cream and the hot fudge sauce. If you think you can contain the messiness of ice cream on a cone I recommend ordering your ice cream dipped in choc. If you are a ice cream lover, you can go as far as a getting a three scoop sundae with hot fudge sauce, whipped cream, nuts and a cherry. They have roughly 20 flavours to choose from. My favourite flavour which you can't buy in stores is Pineapple Choc Chunk - pineapple lump flavour is a must try!! Other alternatives are milkshake and thick shakes with any flavour ice cream.<br/><br/>If your an ice cream lover, you can't get anymore kiwi authentic then ollies. <br/><br/>Rating<br/>Food: 9/10<br/>Service: 9/10<br/>Value for Money: Good<br/><br/>802 Manukau Road, Royal Oak<br/>Opening Hours:<br/>Mon-Thurs, Sun 11am-10pm<br/>Fri-Sat 11am-11pm

Used to go to Ollies when I was a child, and have recently moved back to Auckland and started going again. I love the great range of flavours they have and that there's always something new and interesting. Super yummy! I hope Ollies is still around when I have kids so they don't miss out on the delish thickshakes that I so love.

We started taking the kids to Ollie's when it first opened so have been customers for 40 years. Sad to read the reviews about the staff and uncleanliness of the place. Colin, you deserve better than this. Hope you can do something about it. My gripe (and the only one I've had) is the chocolate coating on the icecreams. I usually get just a normal (and delicious) icecream but recently decided to have one chocolate coated. What a mistake. Whatever this is it certainly isn't chocolate. There is absolutely NO taste to it. All it does is coat the roof of your mouth with a fatty unpleasant mess. Had to stop on the way home, pick the rest of it off and dispose of it. It was ruining a perfectly good icecream. What on earth is in it? I'd be interested to hear.

Great value for money. Where else can you get two big whopping ice creams for $10.00.

Prices have gone up since my last visit but am willing to pay as they have nice burgers. Ordered a banana thick shake and served a chocolate banana instead as they had no banana flavour, would have been nice if I was told that before hand. My shake was then replaced with a chocolate flavour that all I could taste was the coco that had not been mixed well. One table had rubbish on and the other hadn't been wiped down.<br/>With customers coming in and not many tables available then staff should tell there customers there is no room available as customers were wanting to dine in. Miss the old Ollie's as the service now just ain't as good as it use to be. I'll be happy to pay the same price at Burger fuel as long as they make good shakes and tables are clean.

Went to Ollies last night as I haven't been for a few years. And found it very disappointing. Was standing at the counter for at least 5 minutes while there were 3 staff just chatting in the kitchen. We finally got served and while one guy was making our sundaes i had a look around. Its absolutely disgusting. Every single table was full of rubbish and split food. The milkshake machine was dripping all over the bench, the floors were dirty. The counter was full of nuts and sprinkles and drops of ice cream that looked like it had been there for hours. All the freezers had dirty hand prints over them. This was particularly disappointing as there was 2 people just standing there doing absolutely nothing. The cashiers handled money then food without washing their hands. Gross. If I hadn't already ordered I would have left. Prices have gone up to completely unreasonable. Its such a shame cause this places used to be amazing. <br/><br/>I really wish the owner/manager would read these cause Ollies could be an absolutley booming business if it wasnt for the above.

I took my daughters and two friends here last night for a birthday treat. The burgers were great and the girls LOVED the ice cream sundaes....the staff couldn't have been nicer. We definitely got value for money. The tables were all clean so maybe they have read previous reviews and fixed things. A lovely treat for all of us. Thanks.

Best banana splits in Auckland the staff are always friendly. There has been times when I go in and the tables have a little bit of rubbish but hey I'm there for their big fatass ice creams and that's what they do well if you don't like the decor just takeaway and go down the park and eat it .

OK, let's set the record straight about the iconic Royal Oak Ollie's as I'm local. I agree with the previous commentators that the table service is poor. The dining area (which features old school video game and prize machines) could so easily be much more appealing with it's big floorspace and windows if staff kept the tables clean regularly. The food is classic American :). Hotdogs and burgers abound and if your in the mood for some good ole junk food go for it as what I've ordered has been great quality (try the bacon and cheese Ollie Dog). Not to mention this place is conveniently open to really late on certain nights.<br/>Most people come here for the ice cream/milk shake selection from Tip Top (who'd have thought they make so many great flavors - candy floss and maple shortbread... yum!). Prices are good and servings generous - no pretense and great if your yearning for real junkfood (admit it we all do!).<br/>So in summary I'd rather get takeaway here than sit down and the kids working here are efficient and seem quite earnest - management if you're reading this you just need a duty manager to keep things in order.

Writing this on behalf of my partner who took his children there for an icecream on Sunday the 11th of March. He told me: <br/>"The tables were filthy-leftover food and milkshake containers remained despite there being enough staff on to clear them. There was really only one guy working the other staff members were just standing around doing bugger all. It's shame they employ young people who clearly don't give a toss when there's other teens out there who want a weekend job and would do it properly!"<br/><br/>Crikey! Thought I as he usually doesn't complain about such things- being a pretty laid back dude. It must have been bad.

Customers had to sit at dirty tables covered in food and dirty papers etc. To spite there being few customers staff made no attempt to clean or clear tables. Staffmembers handled money with bare hands then proceeded to handle and fill ice cream cones. At no time did they wash their hands!<br/><br/>The place is filthy and staff desperately need some training in basic hygiene. <br/><br/>We will not be visiting again in a hurry and will advise others to avoid this filthy shop.

Average takeaways, kind of pricey for the quality. Still a good trip down memory lane for the ice cream.
