Review Satya South Indian Restaurant Mount Eden - Auckland Central

Terry Chandler
Wonderful experience coming here, the staff are friendly, humble and very helpful, and the food is divine. The restaurant was authentic and had a wonderful atmosphere. They import pressed leaf disposable plates which are amazing and support the natural recycling process which impressed me considerably. Tried the Butter Chicken, Lamb Rogan Josh and Chick Pea curry with Naan bread and rice, and the food was lovely. This family run business, over 3 different locations offers free Lunch and Dinner on Christmas Day to say thank you to everyone, and have done as an ongoing tradition!!

Really great food. Lots of vegetarian and vegan options being South Indian. Very reasonably priced. We were the only table when we arrived on a Sunday night and service was a little slow would be my only criticism. I will definitely be back again. Was nice trying paratha instead of naan too.

Great service, lovely food presentation and beautiful flavours. Prices were fair and the dishes came out fresh, hot, and tasty. No frills, no BS, and no issues whatsoever. They were friendly and let us chat for over an hour after our dinner was finished without being disturbed. Definitely a nice find, and would make this my regular spot if I lived here.

Really enjoyed this meal tonight from Satyas. Was not overpowering at all. Decent price and quantities of meal. Will definitely be coming back her. Lovely chutneys too.

After seeing mixed reviews we weren't sure this visit was going to be good, but it was actually really good. The service was friendly (and we got given extra poppadoms and puri for free so that all 4 of us could get the same amount - a nice thought). 3 of us had dosa which were really good, and the youngest had butter chicken, which was also noticibly better than the norm. Great dipping sauces and chutneys. Would go back, nice!

Four of us had the pleasure of dining at Satya last night. The staff were great and the food even better, I really enjoyed the South Indian flavours and it wasn't too hot for my delicate palate. Every dish was well executed and the prices and for food and drink were very reasonable.

Satya consistently serves up the best Indian food in Auckland in my opinion. Great selection on the menu, including lots of vegetarian, i.e. its authentic. Additionally I am lactose intolerant and the chef and manager went out of their way to ensure I was well looked after, even though the group choose a banquet option. Far better in this regard than Oh Calcutta, which is the most expensive Indian food in Auckland. The decor is not flashy but they've made an effort with bright colours, tables a little cramped. If you are a real fan of Indian food this place is highly recommended.

Extremely grateful for the free Christmas lunch that Satya hosts on this special day. Our family loved the food and kind service by the owners. Thank you for having us in your place. We will be back.

Fantastic gourmet South Indian cuisine. Doesn't look much of a place outside but the food is worth the trip. We've been coming here for years. The quality and quantity of the food never disappoints.

Absolutely amazing how they give Christmas dinner for free. I have been the last two Christmas days and will go again. I have also been a few times as a paying guest. Highly recommended. Thankyou for what you do. Really appreciated.

Thus place was a good place to go to try real Indian food, it’s different to how I thought but I liked it a lot
Really had a good opinion about satya in general. Went for lunch the other day on a weekday. Ordered for a garlic naan with my curry but got served one of those frozen rotis from the supermarket which was then just microwaved not even grilled n topped with some really bad readymade chopped garlic from the supermarket. C'mon guys atleast sear your frozen rotis and don't microwave them. N probably start using some fresh garlic.

***HAIR IN FOOD. NO APOLOGY. SMALL PORTION. EXPENSIVE FOOD. RIP OFF***
my sister and I dined here for dinner last night (24 September 2018). we ordered samosa, cheese and garlic paratha, butter paneer, and butter chicken. food was moderate with no real star dish or complaint until my sister who is pregnant might I add, found hair in her butter chicken towards the end of our meal. she asked me to have a look to confirm she is seeing correctly to which i did. we did not pick at it or do anything but instead quickly asked the lady at the cash register who had also been serving us to come to the table. we showed her the hair but she said she couldn't see it (it was literally a black curly strand of hair standing out on a gold fork, it couldn't have be more obvious). she asked my sister if she wanted a new one but by then my sister couldn't stomach the thought especially being pregnant with crazy food aversions she had now lost her appetite and wanted to throw up.
the lady then asked if she could take the chicken and hair to the back to show the chef even though she said she couldn't see it. (the chef appeared to be her husband and owner, they were also the only staff) he came out with her and just stood in the doorway of the kitchen and the dinning area and just looked at us. another couple came in and proceeded to place their order. my sister and i sat waiting for one of them to address us before paying the bill. it was clear we'd stopped eating and lost our appetite. no one came. so we got up and paid while both owners stood at the counter not having said a word. not event an apology which is all we wanted. disgusting customer service! i will never be back again and i will be warning others. the food was over priced but i was willing over look this until this happened. at $16 something for the butter chicken and $18 something for the paneer served in the smallest bowl ever probably the size of a small dessert bowl with a huge serving of plain rice serviced in a clear mixing bowl the size of a pot. rip off.

I love my curries and am always pretty well satisfied by the Satya restaurant branches but this one really bit the dust. I know I ordered a simple butter tofu (my husband said my dish is entry level curries for beginners which he is right) but it just wasn’t that great. Not really creamy and sweet how it usually is and the panner looked a little sad.
Sandringham Satya branch was fantastic this was a little meh. Sorry guys. 🙁

Came here ages ago but missed out on writing a review as was waiting for a comparison between another place I was wanting to try. Their North Indian fare is hideous, definitely not worth it but the South Indian breakfast specialties are pretty good. I would recommend the place for people that want to try South Indian breakfast only. However, Sahana at Remuera is exceptional for the same.

Love this place! BYO that is quite, comfortable, with great service. I visit here once a month and order the Thali - (selection of various dips with a choice of a main - FISH is my go-to). This dish is great value and lots of fun to eat. Get there :D
MAD
Amazing and authentic South Indian food! Thali plates were delicious as was the masala dosa. Food was quick to arrive and service was friendly and helpful. Lots to choose from. Will be going back there again very soon!

My husband and I were in a mood to eat south Indian cuisine. We usually go to Venkys but this time since we were close to satya we thought of giving it a shot. Being raised in Hyderabad, I know the taste of authentic south Indian food.

We ordered idly and dosa. Idly that was served was frozen and was half cold . Idly turned into a scrambled egg white as soon as I took the first bite. I asked the lady who was serving if this was frozen and she stated ‘I DON’T KNOW, TALK TO CHEF’ and walked away. I asked her to call the chef and she says, ‘FOOD IS MADE IN THE MORNING AND WE STORE IN THE FRIDGE AND SERVE WHEN WE HAVE PEOPLE’ . She then says ‘FINE DONT PAY HAVE IT FREE ‘ in a very rude manner and leaves the table.

The worst experiences of all times. First of all she did not have a decent courtesy to apologise, she did not admit that what they served and how they served was wrong and on top of that the attitude and mannerism of the waitress lady was horrible. We spoke to the chef who was modest and was willing to listen to us. I wonder how they are still in business.

Satya at Mt Eden was a rather small restaurant. Food was special & nice. We started with Dahu Puri, masala papadom & idli. Satya special chicken curry was a bit salty by itself, but tasted well with yogurt or rice. Chicken dosa was crispy when it came and better to be eaten right away; anyway it's still a good dish. My favourite dish was the rather spicy lamb biriyani. Both cheese & garlic Paratha were good too. I tried a lot of Indian food before, but it was quite a different experience at Satya.
(N.B. Photos showed dishes in the order I described.)
(Food - 4/5; Service - 3.5/5; Ambience - 3/5)
Sonam Kumar
Food is good service is below average and prices are on the high side. Empty restaurant when we came and can see why. With other Indian joints such as paradise this place cannot compete with them. The parathas are very small and extra charge for rice on top of $18-20 for a main dish is the reason I would not return.
Ankur Mishra
The service is ok, but that is covered by the great food. It's an all south indian restaurant, and not everyone will enjoy it, but the experience is genuine. It's great for south Indian people looking for a flavor away from home.
Aabhas Dole
This place offers pretty good south Indian variety of food. I've been here a few times and have tried their dosa's, curries and biriyanis and the food has been consistently decent.

I'll recommend trying the butter chicken dosa or the onion/tomato uttapa.
Mobilizer
This is the best Indian we have enjoyed in NZ. It is so authentic - each dish lovingly prepared. We have been back to Satya several times, introducing different friends, and each time we are impressed yet again.

Our favourites mains so far are the Rava Dosa with Lamb Korma, the Egg Plant curry, and the Chicken Tikka Masala.

For entrees you must try the Dahi Puri, and the Masala Papadam. The Satya Chicken entree is also a favourite.

The atmosphere is cosy and inviting, and the service is very friendly and helpful.

If you want a genuine Indian experience with flavours that explode in your mouth I can't recommend Satya enough. You will get like us, and start craving your next Satya curry!
Folcarelli Stephen
I must say this was a wonderful lunch. Chicken Tikka Masala. Not heavy at all with a hint of spice and succellent chicken really made the dish. I understand they import and make their own apices for their resraurants focussung on quality and consistancy. Probably one of the Best dishes i have had this year. A definate must. Service was excellent and the interaction of the mamaner with customers was supurb. Well done Satya Team.
They aslo do home deliveries which is fantastic.
ACO
Went there on a midweek night so only couple more tables were full. Service was quick. Tried cheese and onion Uttapam - nice and soft, Cheese Dosa - which came with a cheese and savory potato filling which was flavorful, Chicken Dosa - Chicken was dry and not as good as we expected and Butter Chicken Dosa - Plain dosa was very thin, crispy and yummy and the curry was good too.
Liked the place. May visit again.
Veganista
Very small, "cosy" place. The food is good and they are well aware of what vegan is, but nothing overly special. I did see a staff member going above and beyond to help a woman who was blind, who was obviously a regular which was great.

Satya is one of those places we go to over and over again. Indian is probably one of my favourite take away options that I've become hooked with after my senior years in high school. I pretty much have a favourite Indian restaurant in each of the cities I've called home in the past. Satya is my favourite in Auckland. It's Southern Indian, so a little different from the others' around Auckland. M was the first one who took me here, and I've been comparing all Indian takeaways to Satya's standards, ever since. Satya is definitely a flat favourite. Normally we get a chicken option and a vegetarian option. Recently we tried mango chicken with green beans coconut curry - yum! The weather's cooling these days, and hot Indian is an ideal company, for sure.Satya South Indian Restaurant57 Mt Eden,Mt Eden, Auckland 1024

It was Friday evening so we decided to de-stress ourselve by having south indian food, my wife love south indian food. Ordered a fish curry, tikka masala chicken & paratha. Fish curry was not good at all, it wasnt a value for money, since this curry was more then $20 we expected a good fish but it turned out to be a Basa fish (which is normally available frozen and quite cheap in the market). Other South Indian restaurant offer a Kingfish, Snapper or Blue Cod. We thought the paratha would be nice and tradional South India paratha but looked like they bought the frozen one from the next door India store and served it to us. Rice has to be bought seperately. Not very good experience and no value for the money you spend on expensive dishes. Had to wait 45 minutes to get served. Wouldnt go here again.

I would go to restaurants like iVillage since they serve you good quality food even if its expensive.

I remember it used to be a pleasant place to have lunch as my workmate and I come for lunch sometimes. But our experience yesterday was very disappointing.

First of all, they refused to accept our entertainment book voucher. But there is no fine print says we can't use it for lunch. And we used it last year without any problem.

Secondly, they didn't provide cutlery when serve meals. We had to grab our folks from next table. They also forgot to serve my work mate's bread. By then, we were the only table in the restaurant around 1pm.

At last, my mild dish was actually very spicy. My throat burned for the rest of the day.
S
Came here for lunch with a friend and had a very disappointing experience. We've been here a couple of times before and we've always been pretty happy with their service but today was different. Not sure if owner has changed since the last time we went there. First of all, my friend got a voucher from entertainment book that was 25% off the total bill. When we told and showed the staff that we have the voucher, the staff told us that they don't accept it for lunch. We have used entertainment book vouchers at this place in the past for lunch and they have always accepted the voucher just fine. It also didnt really have any indication in the voucher that it's only valid for dinnertime etc. so it was quite disappointing that they refused to accept our voucher. Secondly, when our food was given to us, the staff quicky left to clean up another table. He didn't even give us any cutleries. It was also hard to get his attention so my friend ended up just getting cuttleries for us from another table. Third, I ordered Paratha with my curry and they totally forgot about it. At first i thought it was coming but just a bit late but then when it still hadn't come after a while and I was close to finishing my curry, I brought it up to the staff and they have completely forgotten about it. Fourth, my friend ordered a curry and told the staff she wanted it mild. But when the dish came, it was medium spicy. When she told the staff about it, they told her that she have ordered medium (so they are basically telling my friend she was wrong). The staff left and went to the kitchen and then later on, the staff came back again and told her that they actually made a mistake and apologised. I believe they checked the ticket order which confirmed she actually ordered mild. I dunno how so many things can go wrong like that. The restaurant was even not busy at all that time. Only 2 customers when we were there. So disapointed. Poor service and staff badly need training. They also need to call Entertainment book to specify they do not accept vouchers for lunch time.

Food is good. However, they need to work on cleanliness a little more. The glass and cutlery were not clean. Friendly staff. Good pricing.

Menu could do with an update as it's quite busy and confusing. Had the pani puri which was amaaaaazing and the lamb korma with garlic paratha - Very happy with our dinner! :)

I really dunno how and why people have given this Satya such a high rating.

One of the worst Satya outlet in town... Though I love doing to Satya I highly prefer and recommend the other outlets any day...

Very very poor and slack customer service... No staff is motivated interested to service on a very quite weekday... I'm very astound

When we went only 3 tables were there... When we placed order it too them 45 mins to an 1 hr to serve... We starved to death and food was below average...

This outlet has definitely lowered the standard of Satya.

Never visited thereafter...
Good service, good ambience, good food!!! Slightly on the pricier end when having dinner but totally worth it. They do good lunch deals though so worth checking it out if you are near.

My favourite is the chicken tikka masala and the palak paneer (spinach and cottage cheese). It comes with rice and also side of pappadum.

Their butter chicken - spicy is also good! Not as creamy as other places.
Tina Ah Chee
Normally this place is very good. I bought 3 starters and one main for $38.
My poppdums were soft and stale, my puris were also past their use by date, being stale and old tasting with a rancid oil taste.
And my dosa was soft, it had no crunch exterior, it was more of a pancake, the fillings were fine, but it's the carbs that you eat it with that let the whole thing down.

So all in all very disappointing meal.
For the prices that you pay I expect my poppa sums to be made fresh and the putrid also fresh as they aren't that hard to make.
Sorry Satya you had an off. Igor.

Had the spinach paneer curry and a paratha. So obsessed! Staff super helpful and friendly. They made my curry very mild on request and it was perfect. Can't wait to come back.

First timer, and it was amazing! I usually order butter chicken from Indian restaurants and did so on this occasion. It is one of the best butter chickens I have had. It is more on the spicier side, flavour-wise, and I loved it. They don't have garlic naan, so I ordered a garlic Paratha, and holy-moly, it was better than garlic naan. It is quite oily/buttery but the flavour was amazing, its kind of crispy, about the size of a half-plate. The prices are pretty good, you do have to order your rice separately. The prices of the drinks are really good also. The restaurant is small and the tables are very close to each other, the waiter is friendly enough. When you pay they have asian life-saver type mints in wrappers which is a solid after-dinner mint.My group really enjoyed Satya, and we are looking forward to going there again, I will order the exact same meal!

Satya is incredible! i first tried this on Christmas with one of my best friends (we both couldn't go home during the festive season because of work) and we found out that Satya offers free lunch and dinner on Christmas! how incredible is that?! and like all free food it tasted and looked amazing, our minds were so blown!! and since this one little trip we have not looked back!!

Though the food here can be a bit pricey its definitely worth your money! They offer so many incredible options, and yes they have vegan dishes!!! I always always always forget to take photos because whenever i see the food i just dive into it but i would 100% recommend the vege curry (its like a butter chicken but with veges) the classic butter chicken and chicken korma tastes so good and for an entree their pani puri is amazing!! their Naan bread is small than other places but incredible, its so crispy and flat!! to be honest every dish i've tried here is amazing and i will be coming back again and again!!

Love, love, love- food was delish and service also great. Cashew reva dosa for main and the ginger chicken was amazing. Can't wait to go back and try more!

Ordered a Medium-Hot Butter chicken and 2 Garlic Naan, received a mild Butter Chicken with 2 Roti coated in Garlic Butter. Very average food at $20+ per person.

Really disappointed after Sunday night dinner. Pre rung to check they could cater for my allergy to onion & garlic which is extremely severe! Sadly the meal wasn't suitable...I hope they take allergies more seriously as I would have happily eaten at home then have them poison me!
Charles Michel Laing
I am a huge fan of restaurants that are reasonably priced and punch above their weight. Satya combines these qualities with a welcoming family atmosphere and authentically scrumptious south Indian offerings. When my partner's parents were in town from the south island, this is where I took them. The dahi puri and lamb south Indian style will haunt your dreams and keep you coming back time after time :)
Vitale Eti
We went there for a b'day celebration and it is warm and cosy inside, the food is really good and would definitely go back there. Because we were in a big group, we ordered quite a few dishes and shared.
Zoupitup
Idli - eat it here - must have! as good as in India (I grew up eating it there. I know a good idli!).
fish curry n uttapam was very good.
chaat items have a slightly different take - to be expected - still yummm!
can't wait to return there and gorge on many more dishes!!
Kimberly Parsons
Food here is delicious, the Dahi puri is the best by far, the atmosphere is cozy and the staff are really nice and friendly.
Definitely recommend this place!
Helen Davies
Satya put on a terrific Christmas banquet for us, I had lots of positive feedback from our guests and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The food was delicious and the service was excellent – please thank Naresh and Mandy as well as the chef. There was plenty of choice and they looked after our 'special dietary requirements' beautifully.
Kerrod Don
As I had read good reviews of this place and live not too far from it I decided to give Satya a go. The over all environment of the restaraunt was a little uncomfortable and cold as there was no music or anything playing it was dead silence the whole time we were dining. As for the food, it was brought out to us in a timely manor, and the staff were polite. I ordered the Lamb Koorma with rice which packed a lot of flavour and was quite filling. I also had some cheese paratha's as a side which were beautiful. Over all food was good but definitely not a fine dining experience.
Mark Wilson
Since I live in the area I gave this indian a try. Read some reviews beforehand so had an idea what to expect on arrival. If its fine dining your after then look away. If its nice indian food with a bit of a twist give it a try. In terms of dining in I would give it a one out of five. The food on the other hand was great. I'd recommend take away if you'd like a spice up from your normal Indian.
Lisa Rowe
Stumbled upon this low key gem by accident. The unique southern indian food is refreshingly different from the stock standard indian fare you usually get in NZ. Very reasonably priced. We really enjoyed the meal. Definitely would go back next time we are in Auckland.
Karen
Have been enjoying the consistently great meals at Satya for a few years now and really appreciate the friendly service, including their home delivery option. Had a delay in a delivery one night and Kamesh went out of his way to make that right, which was unexpected and very valued. Kamesh really looks after his customers :)
Louisa Vickers
This gem of a restaurant is a little out of the way amongst varying other shops (including a wedding dress shop), but is worth going the extra mile for. I can't recommend it enough! I've been a couple of times now and am always impressed by the food and the service. My mouth is watering simply thinking about my last dining experience here.

No matter how delicious the menu looks, I can't go past the Thali options. These allow you to taste varying dishes on the menu, and all at the same time. I am particularly enamoured with the Sambar and Rasam dishes, and I would highly recommend the Papadam! The curry is always delicious, and is kept hot with a double walled dish. I think this is great as it lets you eat other things and still have a hot curry with no worries about it being lukewarm when you finally get there.

I love the ambiance of this restaurant. They have very comfortable chairs, and plenty of Indian influence in the fabrics chosen. The lighting is low, but gives a great vibe to the restaurant. The staff are very friendly, great at providing good service, and always happy to help those who have no idea what to order. The prices are reasonable, and you can have a wonderful dining experience without breaking the bank! You can feel secure that you will get a fresh, high quality, deliciously flavoured meal, no matter what you order. Highly recommended!

Cosy atmosphere with colourful decor! Staff are friendly, including a man whom I only know as "Mr. Satya." He greeted us and asked how our meals were - probably owns the restaurant. He is an excellent face for the establishment. Genuinely interested in the dining experience of his customers.

We live around the corner from Satya and it's a favourite for those nights when we can't be bothered to cook. The menu is diverse, with excellent starters - Dahi Puri definitely is a MUST TRY, as the menu suggests. Once, when I accidentally ate a chili pepper (horrible, horrible feeling!), the lady at the front desk gave me a complementary Mango Lassi to help me cool down. Another time, a staff member helped us figure out how to eat the confusing (but delicious) Pani Puri starter which we had ordered! The staff are friendly like that. Roti is always great, the main serving sizes are perfect - so much flavour! Of course, you can choose how spicy you want your meal too. Dosa are also excellent.

For those nights where I just want to indulge in a guilty pleasure, Satya always gets butter chicken right - never too oily, never too creamy, extremely fragrant. Not stingy with the chicken, either. There are many Indian restaurants out there - takeaways with cheap curry and rice deals. And yes, the prices at Satya are higher than those other places but you pay for what you get; in Satya's case, a slighty higher than average price gets you a top quality, fresh, flavourful, authentic Indian meal. Certainly, a hidden gem. Highly recommended restaurant!!!

Four of us went to Satya Restaurant, Mt. Eden last week (3 carnivores and 1 vegan), the menu is extensive and the vegan menu is amazing, have never had so much choice in 1 restaurant, I almost had trouble choosing something!
The meal did not disappoint, the food was fantastic and the service was attentive. We will definitely be back soon.

I have been going to the Satya restaurants since they started.

I am the kind of person who happily goes out and tries new restaurants. Satya however is old faithful. I genuinely haven't ever had a bad experience. The environment is relaxed and comfortable, the staff are on to it, the prices are reasonable and the food is the best curry in town.

I'm not sure how anyone could say anything bad about them.

My only warning to you, is that if you go once you will keep going back.

See you there. Often.
Shayla Dullabh
Worst Indian restaurant I have been to. No smile or effort made by the woman in charge. All the meals were bland and just tasted like tomato soup. Service was terrible but got the feeling that the host did not care that much about the people there. We were seated before other groups but they received meals and orders before us. We were not paid attention to when waiting 30Min's to get someones attention to place an order. Completely rude and ignorant host. Would defiantly not return back. Complete waste of money and time. If you add the atmosphere that the staff created and the blandness of the food and the very compact crammed style of restaurant, it adds up to a bad experience. Lady did not even ask how the meal was, just chucked the bill in front and said thank you. Would not even expect this service in a school tuck shop. Absolutely shocking.
Kamit Prakash
I go to quite a lot of Indian restaurants. This place stands out a mile.

The food is just phenomenal. It's pure authentic south Indian. The prices are pretty good too.

This is now in my top 5. Will be visiting very often.
Janice Tan
Decided to try out the new location instead of our usual Ponsonby and Mt Eden is just as tasty!

Went on a Wednesday at 8.30pm and they gladly seated us and service was fast.

Got the usual prata, lamb rogan josh, butter chicken, pani puri (BEST ENTREE EVER!) and a dosa to top it off.

Thanks Satya!

This latest branch of Satya, like their other branches, has a more interesting menu than the average Indian restaurant, with South Indian dishes (e.g. rava masala dosa), along with the standard curries. We ordered a couple of curries to take away, and were impressed with how quickly they were done. The Spinach Potato Curry ($14.95) was unusual in that it was a reddish brown colour, rather than green as I expected, and the potatoes were crinkle cut. It was also a little underseasoned. The South Indian Bone-In Chicken Masala Curry ($24.95) was expensive, but the chicken was soft and juicy and we could taste hing and other spices in the sauce. Both were what we would call extremely mild, though we requested medium hotness. While the food had good flavour, the restaurant felt Westernised in that there were wine glasses along one wall, and we overheard a waitress being instructed to sell the Spanish drink of sangria. Although I prefer the cheap and cheerful South Indian restaurant on Dominion Road (Ras Vatika Vegetarian Cafe), Satya is a good choice if you are with friends who are less adventurous, or if you feel like having meat with your dosas.
David Boshier
I think that this branch has not long opened and it is just down from the Power Station venue. It is a small cosy restaurant and the team serving us where very friendly. The food was good standard high quality Indian cuisine.

They have large and comfortable chairs and other restaurants should follow suit.

We will be heading back.

Pleasant enough meal - flavours were great and the Dahi Puri entree was amazing. Unfortunately the meat in the lamb korma was very tough and let the whole meal down.
