Review Khyber Tandoori Indian Restaurant - Auckland Central

Being an Indian myself, i'm used to huge portions of spicy food, so won't hold that against them since their target are the Kiwis majorly. Overall good service, hygiene, taste and worth visiting once to form your own views.

Disappointing.
Flavorless Tandoori.
Chicken jalfrezi was 3 pieces of chicken in curry diluted in water. No flavour.
Garlic Naan was missing the Garlic and salt.
I've never been so disappointed in a meal before.
Been going here for years! The best chicken Tikka in New Zealand. I have travelled most of India and this is something that actually compares to the quality of food over there.

Major issue is service, very SLOW and don't communicate well.

Don't be put off by the dated decor, the food at this place was wonderful. We ordered Chicken Mango and a Korma and both stood out from every other Indian restaurant we have visited. On the downside, the table cloth was quite damp which was a bit unpleasant.

Not impressed.. Not what i was expecting for..
I was looking for an authentic chicken kadai (Pakistani style) and was reffered by someone to try it here.. Bt was not upto my satisfaction. It was a quick curry nd flacours were not the best. Ginger peices added to the flavors but below expectations.

Awesome food ! Service can be a bit slow, but really worth going for food. I have tried several different dishes, all of which have been really good, and this is an anytime go to place for me. Strongly recommended !!

Last night we went to this place with some expectations as last year we had visited them and had a good experience.

Yesterday though the service was terribly slow, the staff looked confused and the food was mediocre.

I ordered a chicken soup and could not finish it as the taste was a bit strange. My wife ordered a lime drink which turned out to be sprite with some extra soda. Friends went for kadai chicken with naan's and they weren't having a great time either.

I may come back here as this place is supposed to serve you great biriyani and possibly the food we ordered yesterday was just all wrong choice from our behalf.
The worst food I have ever tasted .. firstly the food took so long to come (1 hour for mains).. there were only 2 other customers in the room. The entree which had chicken tikka - the chicken tasted like it had gone off. Upon advising the waiter (who had no idea what was going on the in restaurant) told me it is fresh chicken.

Secondly, the seasonal vegetables had cauliflower, and I got a black rotten piece, when I told the waiter again, he tells me its (methi), O c'mon i know what rotten cauliflower looks like. The chef/owner this time tells me thats how its cooked.

I told the lady in the front who charged us, that the food and service was soo bad.. and she said shes new.

The worst customer service, food and overall restaurant I have ever been too. And a waste of $107 for 4 people.

This place does the best butter chicken in my opinion!
It's the best flavour I've had - very addictive highly recommended!
Also their garlic naans are amazing - now im gluten free I always have popadoms which are also tasty.
Service is also great!

Great food, enjoyed the malai kofta. Service was fairly fast and great service. The palak paneer here is the best I've tried and is a dish which has to be tasted, have not tried many other dishes but from what I've tried I was more than happy with the taste and service.

Everyone knows that the best Indian restaurants are in London and this place is right up there with them! Good location, easy parking, authentic food made with the best ingredients & properly cooked. Excellent friendly service. And totally value for money!

Excellent food and service. I tried Tandoori chicken , sheekh Kabab and other 2 curries with Nan . It was tasty and fresh. Very reasonably priced.
Highly Recommended

Horrible experience, been here a few times and we've tried to give it a chance but tonight was the last straw.
The owner/chef was working alone till someone came to help later on. However we had to wait a long time for our food since there was only two people working. We waited 30 mins from our entrees for mains and at this point we were starving. The food was so so not as good as before very inconsistent with flavours and cold. After we finished the meal we asked to takeaway our left overs and for the different curries to be packed into separate containers. We got told that they couldn't do it but then said they would. We waited a further 10 mins for the food to be packed and found the curry was mixed in rice. Not the service or quality expected from a restaurant who charges that much. Not going there again.

The best curry house in New Zealand - consistently excellent food and service. Friday's lunch was the best fish masala I've ever had. The madras and vindaloo curries are my favourites. Have been through the whole menu and enjoyed it all.

Took my mum there for Mothers Day. Only been there once...Firstly the waiter told us before we even ordered please - Try and be quick as it's a busy night for them!!! Then they got our order wrong..instead of lamb we got beef...Food was cold...they did apologise..but not happy as no one ate properly even after paying $180.00!!! Definitely not going back..

so this is not the first time iv been here, but 3 times. iv tried to give it a chance but the reasons for me not liking this place is mainly because the customer service is so bad. The waiter attends to you after 20mins. and when you order your food takes ages to get to you. i waited more than 30mins for food and was starving by that point...not only that but the chef also got my order wrong... i asked for lamb they gave me chicken... i wont b going back there again.

Good food.

But pretty bad service.

The owner needs to employ better staff... staff that can comunicate with customers. Their service is appalling to be completely honest.

khyber Tandoori does alot of catering @ weddings and everyone seems to love their food (even me).... but their restaurant needs a makeover and their staff need a change over.. :-|

I had a booking here for my birthday, confirmed. I showed up on the day for my birthday lunch to find that they were closed! I walked in and saw the entire restaurant was dark and dirty and a man popped his head out after a couple of "hello?"s..
When I asked if the place was open he said it wasn't because there weren't any patrons. I told him I had a booking for my birthday which was confirmed and that is why I was there with my mum that day. He completely forgot about it!! He then remembered and without a word of an apology started saying that we "could stay" and that he "can cook" for us!! He was very blaze about the whole thing and ruined my birthday lunch more so with his attitude!
Absolutely shocked and never going there again!

Don't go there if you can't stand bad service!!

Best Indian Restaurant? I agree. Certainly the best this side of Billingshurst UK. (Only went there once but stunning.) At the Khyber try the lamb shahi korma. The chef understands heat and garlic. Best spinach dish had too. Garlic naan bread to die for. Bring your own booze except for beer. They don't understand wine. Interesting on a Friday night, the Muslim holy day.

Excellent food and reasonable price. Sometimes have found a bit inconsistency in the taste (may be due to change of the chefs). Sitting arrangement is not flashy and preferably needs improvement. Overall, taste-wise I found it the best in town. The dishes I most like are Butter Chicken (unsweetened), Chicken Karahi and Chicken Tikka. Since I tried it first 6 years ago, haven't found any other better than this.

I couldn't agree more with the first review....(where is everyone else that has gone to this amazing place?)....Anyway, I was first introduced to Khyber 7yrs ago, and I will never eat in another Indian restaurant again, unless it becomes a franchise LOL. My favourite? Prawn Malabari, Butter Chicken, Chicken Tikka, Chickenn Afghani (with eggs & onions), Seekh Kebab & a selection of Naans to die for!!! I'm a regular diner ... I say go and eat there, you will not regret it!! :-)
