Review Chomna Thai Food - Auckland Central

Robert Ruenitz
Good Thai curries and efficient service. We tried two red: Vegetarian and Seafood, and one green Beef. They are served like soup and we kadled them over the steamed rice. Just the right taste and coziness to encourage conversation.

I'm not going to say I'm sort of a Thai food expert, but I am really a big fan of Thai food. This is my new found Thai restaurant, under ground the lorne street Gong Cha. It's very Thai from the design and the elements, so I did expect a lot of the food. Unfortunately, I must say, it is not Thai enough to me thou. Maybe I should have addressed I want Thai style when I ordered. Definitely a good restaurant to everyone, it is just I am craving for authentic Thai food, so.....

I ordered a spicy beef stir fry. It was good. The restaurant was not warm inside. Self service water. Order, pay and sit down with a number and they will bring your food to you.

We have our catch-up with friends today. We ordered pretty much everything on the menu and they are delicious. We had left pretty much nothing behide. These are all dishes we ordered 😋 😃

Excellent customer service. The restaurant is super nice and the food is always tasty and fresh and of great quality.

Went there with my colleagues for lunch. Tom yum soup was my colleagues favourite and I tried it as well. The portion is amazing, tastes also great.

Always the best everytime I visit. Food is so good 👍 Most main dishes come with rice Big portions and lots to choose from

Absolutely fantastic! The noodles taste so nice and the staff members are very friendly. The price is reasonable and I would recommend everyone to eat here. The deep-fried chicken skin next to the counter is not good :(

Had the Pad Thai, and it was quite a generous portion. Just wished they had more hot sauce for our own table.

We had delicious authentic Thai food at Chom Na Thai Food. Car parking here is tricky so we ordered take away. Great value for money.... we had Thai leftovers for breakfast as well. Thank you to the staff and cooks.

Pretty good place to eat in the CBD, love their thai tea have always gotten it since arriving in auckland , today i order thai tea, grilled pork blade shoulder and sukiyaki noodle soup, very good thai food reminds me of home 😍

I have always walked past this place and finally tried it out. After going down the stairs, it leads you to a large dining area. The counter up front has the menu plastered on the walls and there are so many things to try. After much deliberation, I decided to try the Pad Pong Garee Beef, stir fried beef and veges in curry and egg. I ordered and grabbed a table in the large dining area. The flavours were really nice and the portions were decent. This is definitely a place I would return time and again if I was in the area. Edit: Pad See Ew had a nice sauce. The curry noodles tasted like Thai curry with noodles.

Great value for your work lunch. Food was bit sweet for me but it was tasty. They also sell the snacks and spicy Thai sauces.

Just realised that I've eaten here so many times but have never reviewed it. This is one of my go-to Thai spots in the CBD. Cheap eats, humble and underground. Staff are nice and the establishment is always clean and tidy. They also sell a bunch of other Thai eats at the counter and fridge such as desserts to takeaway, snacks, etc. I really like the kumara balls but don't eat them cold people - warm them in the microwave for about 20 or 25 seconds and enjoy (try not to scald your mouth). My favourite is the egg noodles and yellow fried rice. Thai fried rice and the curries are also tasty. The menu is quite extensive so I'm sure there'll be something that will tickle your taste buds.

Great value thai food. Underground restaurant is pretty novel but its very spacious. The serves are generous and tasty and service was very friendly and quick. Nice find walking around the streets of Auckland CBD 🙂
Alice
The food was worth the price. The Sukiyaki Soup has a sour and spice taste, it took me a long time to eat though. There was a fair amount of ingredients and the soup was hot (temperature) so I had to keep blowing on the noodles😆

my go to thai place. the deep fried ribs always hit the spot. too bad they were out of sticky rice this time around. friendly staff and quick turnaround on food, came out in less than 10 mins!
Akkarpark Iam-Opas
tasty food with good portion but it s hard to find free carpark as the restaurant is located in the city and we are not living there, then it will be too costly to come.

Thoroughly impressed! Four of us dined at this hidden gem tonight and we certainly will again! The service was friendly and prompt, the decor is pleasantly simple, spacious and impeccably clean. Each of us ordered a starter and a main, the portion sizes were true to the legendary Thai generosity of spirit! The mains were large enough to feed a small island nation! I ordered the whole snapper, fried and graced with delicious cubes of fresh pineapple and coriander, floating in a heavenly fragrant and delightfully light sauce, my bliss while devouring it was impossible to conceal. To the management and staff of Chomna, khob kun Ka! We will be visiting you regularly and hope in time to have the pleasure of sampling each and every item on your menu!

Hot, fresh, fast and delicious! So happy this amazing Thai place has opened on Lorne St, so close to AUT University campus. Try the Pork Nam Tok!

Hands down the most authentic and delicious Thai food I have had outside of Thailand. :)

Take out order. Everything cooked before the rice and left to sit on the bench going cold. Lead to a night of explosive shit

Went to this Lorne Street restaurant for a late night Sunday dinner. We ordered two portions of red thai curry w/ vegetables and tofu and one portion of green Thai curry w/ vegetables and tofu. The vegetarian curries were extremely watered down and tasteless. We also ordered a portion of chicken in sweet chilli sauce which was excellent, though. The outlet is very basic in terms of decor and mostly everything is self-service. Pretty average experience overall. Not recommending it too highly for any of my vegetarian friends.

Came in for kumara balls and spring rolls today with Sam. Was doing some uni work when friend decided to message me and ask me out for lunch. She wasn't sure of where to go and we passed this place, so I told her that I've always wanted to try the kumara balls here. It was only $5 (12 balls) and they were sold ready made and in plastic bags. Texture was like the sesame balls at yum cha with a subtle hint of kumara flavour. Spring rolls were huge and filled with vermicelli noodles. Loved the chilli sauce that came with the rolls.

Came here with a friend who was recommende by another friend. nice environment. kindof hidden in a basement. good portiom size and good taste!

This is probably the best Thai, value for money restaurant I've been to in Auckland. Their portions are good and their food is very tasty. I wish that their pla manou sauce wasn't premade as it's quite spicy and if you don't pour enough on to the fish (as the sauce is too hot), then you won't get much flavour. I say premake the sauce but leave the chilli out and ask the customer how much hotness they want or the customer can even add their own spice.

My go to place for pad thai. Ordered beef pad Thai this time. Flavor is just nice and I really how they added tofu! Price was also affordable and reasonable for the portion. I also noticed a lot of customers who ordered this dish so this is definitely recommended :)

first time and it surprise me ,while some adivice about the chicken, its too thick ,the taste would be better if its thiner。and the mince pork is as the same i eat in thailand。
Brandon Huang
Decent Thai food with good portions for a fair price. I got the classic Pad Tai. Nothing that blows me away, but definitely satisfying with how savoury and sweet it is. Recommend for students on a budget who are craving some basic Thai.
Tony Shi
Another value for money restaurant! Good for a quick lunch. Has the usual variety of thai dishes which are all pretty good. Not the most amazing thai food you'll get in Auckland but the convenient location and price are great for city goers.
Amy
Consistently great, authentic Thai food. Good portion sizes. Always fast service too. Favourites are the Pad Prew Wan, Pad Prik Grapow and the fresh Kumara balls when in store!
Food Is Good
Nam Tok mu yang tasted good but on my last bite, I have realized that the pork was uncooked well which is very bad :). For others, please make sure if your order pork it is cooked well.

5/5 Taste
4.5/5 Display
4.5/5 Quantity
4/5 Customer Service

Favourite Thai restaurant in CBD

This place was even recommended by Thai friends, their dishes are always big with excellent taste, whatever I tried never failed here.
Chu chee curry is really recommended here and also their Kumara Balls they sell by the counter are really nice and cheap.
One downside was their SomTam is made only with carrots and no papaya, sauce is amazing tho.
Food: 4/5
Service: 4/5
Overall: 4/5

A decent Thai place in city central! My friend ordered green curry with the highest spiciness and when the curry came, we could immediately smell the nice coconut cream smell in the curry. The curry was not burning spicy but the heat slowly built up and could make you sweat a lot when you eat! My friend would like more rice for the curry and they kindly gave him another bowl of rice for free:)
I ordered #55 yen tafo and I loved it. I have tried yen tafo somewhere else and it was an absolute nightmare so I was glad that this place made me love yen tafo again. the rice noodles soaked with the soup and the noodles also had lots of toppings inside like fish ball, squid, tofu and prawns so no worries if you are indecisive:)

Nice and cheap casual place for Thai food. Also you never have to wait for too long even in their busy time. Food are soooo yummy too. I especially love their duck noodles soup even though the noodles are different from the ones I normally eat at Aroy or Bangkok Thai. My boyfriend recommended their spicy minced pork salad to me today and it now becomes one of my favorite Thai dishes. You just can't help but keep eating no matter how spicy it is 😂😂😂. Overall, this restaurant is nowhere fancy but still worths your visit for a good lunch or a nice meal catching up with mates. Highly recommended!!

Great place I recently discovered. What a hidden gem for authentic Thai cuisine. Loved the deep fried noodles with curry main and as for the curry puffs, were average. Nonetheless the noodles won it.

I always come here for chicken skin and I love it. The staff are also nice to have it heated up for dine in. Their kumara balls are a must have but always sold out 🙄. I also ordered larb before and I told yhe front staff I don't want any chillies but when wait staff brought it, it was full of chillies. I only ate 1/4 of it and I gave up.

Big portion and reasonable price. No fuss ordering at the front and you will be given number for your table for the food. Fast cooking and delicious Thai meals. We usually order their pad see eww, tomyum noodles, fried chicken skin, fried pork ribs. They also sells fried kumara balls which is a chewy dessert balls.

Food are actually quite tasty and good portions. Prices are relatively cheap, It's in city, so I am little surprised. It looks more like food court style without much decoration. But I couldn't complian because its price compensates for everything perhaps.
Tanz
Such a great choice for Thai food in city. The food is good and not expensive. Awesome choices of real Thai food (if you can read Thai!) The place is clean and tidy. Service was also helpful and friendly. Love this place, always the place to go to for Thai food in city!

The closest thing to a real Thai food in Auckland. Feels like I’m eating in Bangkok! It’s our favourite by far price is good too can’t go wrong in this place. Service is great too they are very friendly.
J
Been here too many times to keep track of and afraid to keep track of how much I've spent so far... it's that good! I'm a sucker for good Thai food and Chom Na Thai has that. I usually get pad thai which is a classic but other dishes are just as good. Their curries are delicious as well as other stir fry dishes that I've tried. 10/10 would recommend

It's been a while but it's always been my go to for Guay Jub in Auckland. The broth is always thick and tasty with all the goodies inside. Roast pork, liver, stomach, intestine, tofu, egg and noodles. YUM!!!

I have walked past this restaurant thousands of times on my way to gong cha and I have always wanted to give this place a try. I finally made the decision to come here today after reading all the positive reviews.

Service: 8/10
The lady at the counter was very friendly and didn’t mind my horrible pronunciation of the menu items.
The water and cutlery is self service but the workers are still happy to bring you anything you need.
The food was made in quite a short amount of time.

Food: 9/10
We ordered the chicken pad tai, beef mussaman curry and pork pad prew wan.
This is probably the best pad thai I’ve ever had. The noodles were nicely chewy and the chicken was flavourful. The sauce was the perfect ratio of sweet to sour to salty.
The coconut milk in the curry made the curry less spicy and heavy while incorporating a delicious coconut flavour. The amount of beef and vegetables was very generous.
The pad prew wan sauce was a little too overly strong and sour for my liking though.
The presentation isn’t exactly the best but the taste completely makes up for that aspect.

Ambiance: 3/10
The restaurant is located below ground level in a basement-like area. It’s quite gloomy and dusk in the dining area, especially in the corners, which doesn’t feel like the best eating environment, so quickly changed seats to a more lit up place after a table of customers left.
It slightly resembles a food court since it isn’t overly decorated or lively.
It is quite loud and noisy because of the open kitchen and the amount of people.

Overall, I will probably come back with a few friends for the pad thai and to try out the other dishes. I wouldn’t recommend this place if you want a high quality dining experience but they provide a satisfying meal at a cheap price.

Super impressed with the quality of food and reasonably cheap price despite being in Auckland city too! My personal favourite is kao mun gai, a rice meal with tender cooked chicken that just shreds off with specially made sweet and sour chilly sauce and comes with a side soup, absolutely beautiful!! The fried (turtle egg) balls are lovely for dessert as well 😋 Staff service is great.
Dani
such a cool underground Thai place! So glad that I discovered this little hidden gem as I always seem to walk past it. The quality of the food and portions are so worth the price-reasonably cheap too. Came with a friend and Ordered the Pad Thai and the Green Curry. We were both super full after the meal and even had leftovers too. Overall, the quality and quantity were more than expected and will highly recommend for a cheap eat in town!

This place is great! Super reasonable prices and the service is so so fast. They have really good portion sizes and we managed to share a plate of Pad Thai between two. It's more like a food court than a restaurant and the staff is friendly as well. Definitely coming back.
Kicky
First time to try, pad thai is very nice, soft, rich. I love this. Will try others next time. Place a bit dark but probably good for young people
This time trying pad see euw and crispy chicken with salad all yummy
Good Thai takeaway place. I wouldn't call their food restaurant food it's more of Thai version of Chinese takeaway. Staff are friendly and attentive. If you want to eat at Thai restaurant they got better places in cbd but if you are just grabbing a quick meal it's a good place to go
Nyasha Makunga
Always get the Vegeterian pad thai. Love how it’s simple yet tasty and definitely worth the price for the size of the meal. The service is really good.

I visited here for the first time last week and was quite surprised of how big the place was, didn't even know about it even though I walk pass it pretty much every week. The staff were friendly and the restuarant was clean. I got the Pad Med Mamuang and I really liked it even though I'm not really into thai food. The portion size was big too!
RL.P
Better than a couple up market Thai restaurants I’ve tried in the cbd. Larger portions for the same price you feel SO full afterwards. Good prawn to noodle ratio- some places I’ve tried have only 3 prawns vs a whole heap of noodles. Cheap eat & fast service. Dining area isn’t the best looking tho.
Mei Taing
Just found out today that they had an E rating.. I don't know if I can go back, the service is not that great either. If you ask for takeaway meals then they reduce the amount of vegetables in the food and give you extra noodles instead.
Amit Tripuraneni
Been here couple of times now and both times the food was excellent. Reasonably priced with very generous portions. Chicken larb as well as chicken pad Thai were really delicious. Highly recommend for authentic Thai food.
LOONA
I love coming here for a reasonable priced meal and big portions. The staff are nice, the food is really tasty and never takes too long to come even when it’s busy. Great restaurant.
Thom
Very generous portion, good quality and taste across the wide range that they offer on the menu, staff are friendly and from my experiences the place is never super packed so it's great although I personally don't fancy dining underground with white walls and fair lighting.
Rachel Farrow
If I could give this no rating then I would. Went for lunch there today & found a cockroach in my Tom Yum soup when I was three quarters of the way through the dish. Thaiday Friday ruined.
Quinn Mai
The food portion is quite big considered reasonable price. The place is big but quite stuffed due to being down the basement. Feel more like a big stall in a food court more than a restaurant. Nice staff. Great food. Will be back whenever I crave for Thai food.
Val
Reasonable prices and good portions! Got the Pad Tai which was very tasty and the Rad Nar which was interesting but too peppery for my taste. Ambience was alright but service was very fast and overall am really pleased with my w and I will come again!
Ellyjellyinmybelly
We’ve been coming for quite a few years and food has always been good except for this recent visit. Friend’s Tom Yum had CELLOTAPE inside and my Pad Thai had a FINGER NAIL? Going to steer clear for a while.
James
Tasty and decent portion sizes. They give heaps of meat in their stirfry dishes which is good. You have to order at the counter and that can take a bit of time especially when it's busy.
Purita Mok
Had a wonderful curry vegetable rice today. The service was great, the food came quickly, there was plenty of seating and even though the décor wasn't amazing, it felt comfortable eating there. The portions were large for the price too. Would definitely come back to try other options!
Jade0289
The reason why I choose Chomna when I'm craving Thai-- food is delicious and portion is generous. That's all you can expect.
They don't offer nice service or cozy environment unfortunately, lol. So I prefer get some take aways from here and enjoy my food at home.
Gracia
Portion sizes are amazing, so many options to choose from and it’s really quite yummy, definitely would recommend if you’re hungry and on a budget. It’s like an underground gem, visit when you can!
Melwyn Pereira
Portion sizes are good, which explains the high rating given mostly by students. The service is fairly quick despite the crowd that you usually find here. Their furniture is sticky and I wouldn't dare check the toilets.
Food is ok. It's slightly better than cooking at home using some Thai paste and coconut milk. Really no reason to come here when you have so many better options nearby.
Sususue
Wasn't very pleased with food very very salty. When asked to remake it and takeaway it they just added more pepper and boxed it up. The sweet potato balls in front of the counter wasn't even fresh . Left over from the day before and refried again . When other guest of mine asked for a box to talk home the rest of there food. Staff just gave us a used boxed that's still wet from the rice residue. Wouldn't be here again
Whitepanda89
I've been here quite a few times due to it's affordable price and location being close to uni. I've tried a few dishes from here, their portion sizes are very generous and comes out quite quickly. The location almost looks like a food court but is very spacious if you want to have a group dinner. The toilets were clean too.

(#48) Chicken Pad Thai - one of the best pad thai I've had.

(#48) Beef Pad Thai - it was good, the beef was a bit overcooked

(#11) Chicken Mussaman Curry - didn't fill me up as much as I wanted it to, the curry was a bit bland

(#46) Chicken Pad See Eiw - one of my go to because of the amount of vegetables, at times it can be heavy on the soy sauce so bring water towards the end

(#47) Chicken Pad Yakisoba - really liked because of the amount of vegetables, note the end can get a bit heavy on the sauce

I've also tried the kumara balls (4 for $1) and they are crispy and chewy, just the way you want them to be. They are a great pre-snack before food to share around the table.

Price: 9/10
Food: 9/10
Ambiance: 7/10
Service: 8/10

Amazing food, great prices and i never leave dissaponted from this place the reasturant itself looks nothing special but who really cares...
Haden
I love their Pad thai! A huge portion which tastes great for a low price! You can't go wrong with that.

Pro tip: Get the dishes without meat and you save $2 off the price. :)
Sven Bock
Excellent food, just ensure that they really understand what dish you want and how you want your food. Most times they either bring me a different dish than ordered or I order spicy and it is not. They always fix it quickly though. Very friendly stuff and very very authentic food. No fancy restaurant but no fancy prices either. Apparently same family that used to run Zap4 on Ford Street which is gone. Same menue and all.

My favourite go-to for the BEST Authentic and pocket friendly Thai Restaurant in Auckland and quite possibly, in the country!

I have probably been here 10+ times since i first laid foot here. I would always come here during my time as a uni student when i felt like a hearty curry or just something warm and filling.

Favourite dish to order: i would alternate between the Classic Chicken Pad Thai or the Chicken Mussaman Curry depending what I would crave on the day. Every meal would be faultless and made to perfection from flavour, taste and to the huge portion size of meat given considering the price of the $13-15 (including rice)! I have tried many Thai curries/pad thai at other Thai Restaurants (fancier ones included) with an average price $20+ but definitely it does not compare with Chomna, taking into account price, taste/flavour and portion ratio.

Verrrrrrry friendly staff, always acknowleding us with a farewell in Thai after our meal.

Food: 5/5
Customer Service: 5/5
Atmosphere: 4.5/5

My order were yum kai fu and deep fried snapper. It's awesome!!! I like this taste and this place. This restaurant is a good location and good value for money ~ you have to try ~~ ✌🏻✌🏻

Dropped by this restaurant for the first time after my regular gong-cha run next door, and was please surprised by the location and food variety

Leading down the stairs is an almost food-court-like seating area that was clean and well presented

I ordered a vegetarian pad thai because I wrongly assumed that this restaurant would be like "all other thai restaurants" with dry chicken, but boy was I wrong
Upon eating my partners dish the chicken was not dry at all and delicious, something I will be sure to order next time

I also ordered $5 worth of kumara balls, and although they were no longer hot they were still sweet and crispy

I recommend this place for anyone looking for inexpensive thai food that will most definitely have seats, and that they get the kumara balls if they are hot&fresh 😊😊
Arjm19
Chomna has easily become my favourite Thai place!
After years of ignoring the store front because it doesn't look like much on the outside, I finally went and tried and was not disappointed. My first try of their food I tried the pad see eiw and this time round I tried the pad thai. Standard competitive pricing on the cheaper side, only deviates a dollar or two from typical Thai places - I don't mind paying that little bit extra because the food is always so consistent. There's an option to add extra meat but you honestly don't need to because sometimes at the end of the meal you're left with more meat than noodles. Super generous servings!!
Their pad thai is a must try for pad thai enthusiasts
And compared to other thai places in the CBD, they actually have their own place so the chaos associated with food courts is eliminated.
The pad thai is a perfect balance of sweet and just the right amount of sauce. Bonus points for a great smokey wok taste without being way too oily.
Quick and good service too, menu is displayed on entering
Highly recommend and is close to the movie theatre and just by the universities ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

First time we got here was because of a Thai friend of ours which recommended it. Since then, we have tried other Thai places but none as good as this one! We have become regular clients of the place. Staff is very friendly and helpful, the concept of the place is very bssic but the food is Amazing!
Alex
You can enjoy real Thai food at reasonable price. The restaurant is underground, but it was clean and tidy. And if you want, you can take away. I really recommend the Thai noodle, it was sweet and quantity was satisfying.
Plurple
Food was good and I like the atmosphere of this restaurant. Like an underground cafeteria. Did not expect it to be so roomy when I walked in. Went at peak lunch hour (12.30) and food was brought out in 20 min which I think is reasonable. Got the basil chicken and my friend got the ginger beef stirfry - #25 & #26 I think. Both really tasty, and spicy as we asked for them to be. Also they have these condiments like chili vinegar and chili flakes on the shelf where the serviettes are and they're quite tasty to add to the food. Will def come back another time!
Thegreeats
Not a 5 only due to venue and vibes
The food? AMAZING! One of the best pad thais I have had. The red curry was incredible- full of flavour and spices.
I also loved how the price range was reasonable as some Thai places are very over priced. $26 for two mains!
I definitely recommend to those love Thai food.
But due to vibes and interior of the restaurant I dont recommend it as a place for a "nice" dinner out or as your first date place 😂
But convenient if you are a uni student or just want some good food
We will surely be back

If you are looking for a tasty and affordable Thai Food restaurant, look no further!

The food in this place is super tasty and flavorful and prices average between $13-15.

My favorites are the cashew chicken (#27) and the chicken pad see ew (#46). I've also tried their wonton soup and green curry chicken and overall everything I've tried has been good.

This is my go to thai food place and I would definitely recommend it!

Itsyum
Real Thai food at a decent price and good portion sizes. If you fancy a Thai takeaway in the city this would be the place to go. Tasty and satisfying.
Oksana Zhang
I ordered the Golden Pad; my friend got a beef Pad Thai.

The food came extremely fast, I was not expecting it! It was hot and freshly out of the pan.
The golden pad was a sweet and sour mix, which I personally am a sucker for so that easily won me over, I finished the entire plate. The sauce was generous, meat was generous, noodles were cooked to a perfect consistency--can't fault it...except maybe for more!
Price-wise you will definitely be expecting bang for your buck!

I will be back to try further dishes!
Would definitely recommend!

Price: 9/10
Food: 10/10
Ambience: 8/10
Service: 8/10

Yeeeees!!! This is the best place to go for a quick and (very filling) bite between uni classes.

Ridiculously tasty and hearty portions, particularly for the price.

The Pad See Eiw is of notable mention and the pad tai is pretty damn good, too.
ShoRt
Ordered my usual Pad See Ew and it was good! Just the perfect amount of sweetness and spice. Also highly recommend the spicy basil stir fry. Flavours are just so amazing that I want to lick all the sauce off the plate. The kumara balls are a cheap snack too.

The place is spacious and clean, and staff super friendly. Would be back.

Me and my partner just rolled up one night cos we were so hungry. A lot of people say Thai food/restaurants are really expensive and serve small portions so I didn't really want to dine here.

BUT! Luckily we did cos the food was delicious AND was filling. I ordered the Khuay Teaw Tom Yum (chicken) noodle soup and that was $13 which is reasonable but it was quite a big bowl and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

The service was a bit average and not very engaging but they are friendly people.
Aldous Wong
I order Pad Thai with beef cost me $13, have to say it isn't tasty. In fact their pad thai taste like ordinary stir fried noodle, not the pad thai l tasted before somewhere else.

First time here, variety of Thai food on manu.

another good one of Thai Restaurant in Town.

Good taste , Good portion , reasonable price , worth to try.

If your after decent thai food and really quick, its worth checking this place out. Walking down the stairs it feels like a little food court due to the amount of seating and size of the place – plenty of space for small or big groups.

It was pretty quiet when we dined in for lunch the weekend, but we were pleasantly surprised at how quick our food came out. We ordered the vegetarian curry and the Pad Yakisoba. Both were decent portions and good value for money ($11 each). The curry looked a bit plain visually but was full of flavor and just the right amount of spiciness. The Yakisoba was a safe option and turned out as expected. The meal had a good ratio of noodles, veggies and protein. Next time I’ll have to give the deep fried kumara balls a try!
Jiaming Friedrice Li
Got the pad Thai. The beef was tough you can tell it's very dry from the picture. The bean sprouts were not fresh. The best part of the meal was the noodles which was below average. Overall bad experience for $13. Saw quite a lot left overs on other tables as well.

I visit here fairly regularly, whenever I need to have my Thai food fix in Auckland CBD. Perhaps most authentic Thai cuisine in Auckland CBD, and I speak as a person who have visited Thailand several times. Generous use of traditional Thai spices such as lemongrass and coriander, big portions full of flavor. Price also cheap seeing that in other Thai places, dishes usually go around $20. Ask the chef for recommendations.

I gave 4.5 out of 5 because there's still room for improvement:

* Traditional dishes are spot-on, but some of the Chinese/Western dishes are just above average. Will definitely recommend more traditional dishes there.

* I noticed that food quality varies sometimes depending on who is working in the kitchen that day.

I had 'Pad Sukiyaki Pork' for lunch today and really appreciate with the flavour and the size which I couldn't find it in once so I had to divide for lunch tomorrow.
I ordered this dish because I miss Thai food so badly (I'm Thai)
I recommend this Pad Sukiyaki.Just in case,It might be a little bit spicy for foreigners.

I came to have lunch here about a week ago. Tried the Wonton Soup. I didn’t wait that long. A bit average though, had to add salt and pepper until it tasted better. Will try the other dishes sometime.

Great place to have a fast asian food.
Egg noodles with chicken and pad mad vegetarian food. For starters chicken satay and curry puff .
Noodles with chicken were pretty amazing ,cooked very well and big dish too.
Pad mad was very good too.
I wasn't sure about chicken satay .satay souces were more like coconut cream.
However good place to have quick food on your lunch time.
Big enough for big group having food there too.

Yes yes yes! Today was the day I finally got to try out Thai food! It was pretty early, I came in here at around 11.30am for lunch. I ordered the Beef Pad Thai for $13! Food didn't take long to arrive, so I was happy with that. I was surprised by how massive the portions were! Pad Thai was something I've always wanted to try. The plate was filled with stir fried noodles, bean sprouts, chives, some bits of tofu, beef, crushed peanuts and a slice of lemon. The combination of flavours really hit me. It explodes in your mouth! I could taste a hint of sugar, but that didn't stop me from enjoying my lunch. Service was okay, they don't really talk to you. But, we're judging the food here! Keen to try more dishes.

I love chomna, tasty authentic thai food, we come here almost every week. The dishes are reasonably priced, quick and friendly service. And i love those deep fried kumara balls!!

Tried green curry with fish for $ 15.00 there, just average level of taste. Staff was very warm heated to Thai customers. No images on the menu, that's very hard to foreign customer who are nor familiar with Thai cuisine.

According to the not on Zap Thai's closed doors, this is one of their restaurants so I made my way up. Exactly the same style boards and most things $13 meal pricing with nice serves. I usually ordered a Choo chew but I have since gone vegan so I got the takeaway vegetarian curry for $11 which included rice, bonus! The curry needed a bit more spice and maybe more coconut milk but it was more than adequate and I ate the entire thing over two meals. Next time I'll try asking if they do the same thing as zap Thai and make any curry vegetarian for $11. The Choo chee is hands down the most delicious and thick rich coconut creamy curry on there, like a massaman.

Pad See Eiw tastes amazing in here!
I would say this is the best casual Thai dining in Auckland central. The place is always tidy and waiter&chef are very friendly. Wide range of curry also worth trying.

Great service. Did not have to wait long. Great value for money. Staff friendly and accommodating. Good variety of options on the menu. Very yummy food and plenty of it. Would go there again😀

I just had take away from here. The guy gave me the wrong order so I had to go back and wait for a couple more minutes. Very disappointing experience. (2/5)

I came back and always order Beef pad thai or beef larb as I am allergic to chicken, great food for the price. the quality and the amount you get is good.

Reviewing the kumara balls and mung bean balls.

I was super keen to try these, because they're cheap, $1 for 4, and I love kumara, and I was absolutely not disappointed. They are crispy on the outside with a sort of indescribable chewy centre that reminds me of the Chinese glutinous rice sesame balls. They have a good kumara flavour and are super cheap! Will definitely be back if I feel like a small something to eat.

These are also good value. $2 for 3, they are larger and heavier than the kumara balls. The mung bean balls I expected to be sweet, probably because they looked exactly like the Chinese sesame balls, which usually has red bean inside it. It didn't really have a filling, but tasted a bit like coconut milk amongst other seasonings. It tasted kind of like a curry to me? It's not my kind of snack but it's still not bad anyway.

Come here if you have a monster stomach xD
I was hesitant to come to Chomna at first because it's underground and had too much of a foodcourtey atmosphere but much to my own surprise, I've been here 4 times now. Although I suppose it's really because it's the closer Thai restaurant to uni.

FOOD:
Portion sizes are really big for the price and really filling. I've had their red curry, and chicken pad thai - both were a mission to finish because I was so full halfway into it. My boyfriend got the Beef Larb last night because he said it's authentic - apparently he liked it but his face showed otherwise.

I personally don't think the food is amazing or anything - just your average Thai food but the Pad Thai is certainly better than some other places I've tried. I quite liked the curry as well - they give you a lot of veges and meat!

STAFF:
The staff seem friendly, which is always nice.

I would recommend this place if you're in the city and happen to crave some Thai food :)

Went to try that place today, as kept walking past and wondering. Got couple of stir fry's and curry puffs and some yummy kumara balls. I never had kumara balls so not sure what they suppose to taste like, but i loved it. Really enjoyed all the dishes and was nice how they didn't hold out on the meat, usually you get chicken, but its mainly only veges. Portions were good too, two stir fries fed the 3 of us. Yum yum! I would tots recommend!

Dropped in to pick up some of the Kumara balls for a cheap snack, at $1 for 4 balls, they're a good bargain.

It was actually the second time we dropped in as the first time they didn't have any and said they would be a half hour wait. Looks like they are batch made and cooked. Ours seemed like they'd been out awhile, tasty but a bit hard. Depends on your luck I think if you get in on the right end of cook time.

Surprised at how big it was inside, will be back for a meal soon.

4.5/5
ONLY FOR THE KUMARA BALLS !!
had them fresh out of the fryer.
super crunchy on the outside and chewey in the middle. Don't know if the kumara taste was there but oh well ~ it's cheap
4 for $1
good street snack !!!
Thai food is one of our favourite types of cuisine. So when we found out that Chomna had opened we were ecstatic. What we received however, was absolutely disappointing. The quality of the dishes were subpar. The substance of the meals were just too basic. A few simply chopped vegetables, a couple of tablespoons of rice, and a few spoonfuls of curry is not what we expected. The food here is priced moderately however there are definitely better places to go for the money. We will not return.

I settled for Yum Nua salad: generous serving of tender beef served with freshly sliced cabbage, carrots, tomatoes, red onion and chilli - oh my the chilli 🔥🔥🔥🔥 my own fault as in my excited haste of finding this place I forget to ask for Kiwi hot not Thai burning hot 😱 nonetheless it was fresh and tasty. The big plate of rice served with it will put me to sleep this after in front of my computer...so if you're a Kiwi born Thai food lover bring tissues or remember to ask for mild, just saying. Yes I will be back on 'cheat' day to sample a curry dish. I love Thai food!
It may not be easy to notice this underground restaurant in Lorne St., but for the frequent comer-and-goer, this fairly new opening is a curious treat. We went in one quiet evening, which guaranteed a return the following week, which secured a possibility of more visits in the future.

While the decor and furniture may be simple, their food offerings are rich and flavourful. Their menu boasts abundant choices, with almost all giving you the option of your preferred meat (or none at all!). Service is superb. Current favourites include Pad Yakisoba, Tom Yum, and Pla Tod.

This hidden gem located at Lorne Street is literally quite hidden. It's an underground food place. We came to visit Chomna by accident when one evening we were trying to look for a new place to try. Since it was closest, we walked in.
Going down the steps, I did not have any expectations. The place was filled with tables and chairs and you are greeted by the cashier lady, who is very polite. I thought it was nice and felt comfortable to order. There's a huge board on the wall that has the menu on it. I admit, there's heaps and I got confused which one to pick. But the lady, called me and gave me a menu with photos on it which was really helpful. I got to choose easily after that. We ordered the Pla Tod, fried whole snapper with sauce and Seafood Tom yum with rice.
I was so glad we walked in and found this place. The food is delicious! The fried snapper was cooked to perfection and the sauce was spectacular. Not too hot, not too sweet and not too sour. It was very well balanced. Filled with colors from the herbs, veggies and spices made it look more appealing. And it tastes more than as good as it looks.
The Tom yum was quite hot, I admit I did sweat a bit. But it was great for that cold, rainy night. Kept me warm. The flavour was nice too. It had heaps of meat as well, which was quite filling. I enjoyed the meal very much!
This is a great place and an affordable one too. Perfect for eating in groups and sharing dishes. Especially knowing that there's heaps of options to choose from. It will definitely be fun.
We had been here twice now though, but we just had takeaways the second time around. We tried the Yakisoba, which was very tasty. Although, some might find it too sweet but maybe a little splash of lemon would be helpful. Otherwise, it's a great dish.
Overall, this is quite a place. Amazing food and great service. The food is cooked fresh and taste is authentic Thai food. Simple, filled with flavours yet balanced to perfection. Sarah Reynolds #challenge

Jaya

Ordered Red curry (chicken) to takeaway.
The place is kept very clean and tidy.
Food was prepared quite quickly.
Flavours are great.
Disappointing amount of substance in my order:
50% Rice
30% Curry sauce
20% Chicken and vegetables.
I'd usually expect to pay $13.00 for specialty items in the curry, like prawns, but here - $13.00 for plain chicken - and not a lot of it.
I must reiterate though: Tasted very good, just don't expect to have any leftovers.

Work in the area, visit Chom Na at least twice a week. The food is fantastic, very authentic. I lived in Thailand for 5 years and find it very true to form. Larb is amazing, Pad See Eiw, amazing. Very affordable, much better than s food court. The servers are all lovely and passionate about their job. Could do with a bit more interior decoration, but that's a minimal fault. Go their. Enjoy something other than pad Thai or green chicken curry, you won't regret it.

Recently opened Thai place located just around the corner of Lorne St and Wellesley St. I forgot the name of the dish that we had but it's basically fried rice with seafood. It was really flavoursome, also serving is quite big and is enough for two people to share.

In the midst of exam season and the regular late nights at uni, getting a good meal may seem like a struggle. So it's such a relief to know that a Thai place so close to uni is finally here. According to the viva write up the people behind my go-to zap Thai cuisine was also setting up another affordable Thai restaurant. Menu is similar and a lot more cutdown than the zap menu.

So when we came in for a quick dinner we were surprised to find it was quiet. Probably because it still had recently opened and is hidden away in Loren street. We ordered the chicken pad Thai and the chicken nam Tok. It's exactly what you expect for a Thai fix. Flavoursome, filling and affordable.

Recommended if you're on a budget and a uni student ;)

Two words: rip off & disappointing.

Came here tonight and ordered a red curry with seafood. It was $15.

I recieved:

50% rice
40% red curry sauce
10% seafood

I could count the number seafood items on two hands. I went to Carl's jr after to fill my hungry stomach.

I should've taken it as a sign that the place was empty. If you're going to rip off your customers. Don't expect returns.

Better off getting from the foodcourts. You'll get better value.

The most authentic and delicious Thai food I have ever come across. The service is fast and friendly, the food tastes amazing. There's a huge selection of dishes including some Vietnamese style dishes as well as lots of Thai favourites. I will return here again and again. We had pad thai which was perfect and a Vietnamese dish where you create your own fresh spring rolls. The dish was so fun and a fun activity. Two dishes (one main and then the Vietnamese share dish) cost $30
