Review Heng Kee Foodstall & Takeaway - Auckland Central

Eugene Man
Heng Kee Food Stall & Takeaway has been around ever since I first tried it during my university days in 1999. In 1999 the 3 choice meal dine in or takeaway was NZ$4.50. For year 2018 the same rule is now NZ$9.80. Hang Kee's smorgasbord options consist of sweet and sour pork, lamb stew curry, fried chicken, fish stew, chicken stew, egg foo young, tofu stew, vegetables with beef, egg noodles, rice and the list goes on.. .. ..It is known to be in one of the top ratings of expanded options for their menu in Queen St. Water is free either chill or warm. Knife, Fork and Spoon are at bay. I would recommend any Asian who likes their country based food to try Heng Kee's Food. Somehow, their tastiness really amazes me at all times.

Came here for an early tea. We had tried going here on the weekend but it was closed. Food looked average. Only half the usual selection available but that could be because it was the end of the day. $9.90 got a container of Rice(Steamed Rice not Fried Rice) or Noodles, and then 3 food options. I got Noodles with Sweet and Sour Pork, Chicken Chow Mein and Egg Foo Yong. Didn't eat the noodles they were dry. Sweet and Sour Pork was average. Chicken Chow Mein didn't taste right so didn't eat that either. The Egg Foo Yong was probably the best thing from this meal I had.

I got my dad the Rice, Sweet and Sour Pork, Lamb Curry and Egg Foo Yong. It was edible. However we both felt a bit nauseous after consuming.

I can't say I would come back here.

Food quality is a 2/5 but at $9.9 for three choices with noodles or rice, you can't argue.

I liked their lamb curry, a bit fatty but very tender and flavourful. Pork belly is a popular choice but I found it so-so. Their meat sitrfry dishes are mostly vegetables, but the veggies taste nice and fresh. You would definitely be full after eating here.

Pretty cheap price for one meal and really worth it,nice chicken, sweet sour pork and pork belly !! My ideal place for lunch!! You can also get water for free,I don't think I would enjoy such a service in any other restaurants I know in Auckland.
Don't expect restaurant quality food, just cheap and greasy Chinese food to fill your stomach up. Won't be coming back here because of the C grade food hygiene rating.

**Edit**

Ok I decided to come back here a second time. Looks like they have sorted out their food rating (A). Lots of dishes to choose from and the serving portions were much more generous than before; if you takeaway they fill up rice/noodles in one container and your dishes in another. The dishes itself were pretty nice tasting.

I would suggest you label your dishes in the display so customers can tell what is what. Otherwise, probably one of the best meals I've had for under $10 in the Auckland CBD.

This place has gone to shit. There's an Indian guy that owns it now. I got there and he was talking to this white chick. He got up quickly served my food up so he could go back talking to the White chick. When I got my plate of food he only stuck a bit of beef and curry lamb. I was disappointed this meat I got were only bones. For $10.90 plus Coke I'm never going back there ever again. Bad customer service. Another time I went there he was smoking his vapour shit behind the counter as well, not good bro.
It was delicious and cheap.
Quiet place.
The lady was really nice and friendly, cosy service and warm setting.
I had noodles with eggs, fried tofu and chicken :)

I had a good time.
This is my favourite place in Auckland for having Chinese! I visit it this place almost twice or thrice a week.
If you are looking for authentic Chinese and not willing to spend too much then this is the best place to be at.
My all time favourite order is squid rings, fried chicken and beef curry on rice. And guess what you get all this just for $8, making you so full that at times i don't have dinner.
Peaceful place to sit and eat along with friendly and polite staff.
Totally worth it and value for money!
A Tale Of Two Tummies
Food ordered:
Sweet & sour pork, spicy chicken and stir fried vegetables

Bill: $7.90

Big tummy: Granted for the price, we knew not to expect too much going into this place. I mean, for $7.90 you can't really expect a celebrity chef to be serving up gourmet food on your plate. So let's start with the positives. As mentioned, the restaurant has a deal for $7.90 where you can order three dishes, along with your choice of rice or noodles. We have rice at home, so requested three dishes without the rice/noodles. We were pleasantly surprised that the lady still filled up the container, as a lot of places won't compensate for the lack of rice/noodles by giving you extra servings of the main dish.
As for the quality, this is where the $7.90 price tag is somewhat driven home. The stir fried vegetables were actually the stand out, fresh and relatively delicious. Unfortunately, the chicken and "pork" were beyond disappointing. The chicken itself consisted mostly of bones, while the sweet and sour pork somehow found a way to feature even less meat, to the point where we questioned whether the dish should be renamed "sweet and sour batter". There was quite simply no pork to be found.
Hengkee is an adequate restaurant if you're looking for a really cheap place to fill you up, but if you're looking for quality or taste then you'd definitely better off looking elsewhere.

Little tummy: We were looking for a place to provide us with a lunch dish to go with our rice at home and decided to settle on Hengkee due to its special of three options for $7.90. The vegetables we ordered were easily the best part of the meal, while the chicken was mediocre. It tasted okay, but was mostly just bones. The sweet and sour pork was the let down of the meal. With minimal taste and even less meat, it was hard to work out what was lacking more... the "sweet and sour" or the "pork". Overall, taking the price into account, it was okay for a cheap lunch.

They do a 7.90 lunch special which is actually quite good value. It's not the best food in the world but the lady that works there does make a lot of things fresh before the lunch rush. It fills you up and is good to grab if you're after something cheap, filling and quick. It's probably better value than spending the same amount at a fast food joint.
Victoria
Tried the takeaway combination special, good value for what you get. The food isn't amazing but then again better for what you might get for a similar price elsewhere.
It's usually busy with students if the weathers horrid outside. Also seems to be topped up and kept relatively fresh.

My cousin and my aunty had their birthday dinner at Heng Kee. We loved it so much, my cousin organised a pre-Christmas dinner for all the women in our family (18+ years)... the night was a success, so much so that it became something we would do for years to come. This was all down to Heng Kee, the food was great... there were so many of us, we had the upstairs area all to ourselves... the staff were awesome...did I mention the food was great?... and it catered to all our tastes, we had some vegetarians among us as well...

foods cheap but its not that good... so... value for money isnt that great.
Jesse James .
They have a $7.90 meal which is ok but a bit flavourless. Probably wouldn't go back there until I have tried all the other places up Queen street first

My husband and I left Auckland 9years ago and the only thing we miss about Auckland is Heng Kee! The steam boat is so much fun and such good clean yummy healthy food. We really miss "Mumma Heng Kee" who welcomed us warmly every time we arrived (we went every week!) and all the staff were cheerful and helpful. A fabulous experience with good food.
