Review Kampung Malaysia - Auckland Central

Great food overall, really enjoyed our lunch here. Wish the fresh cut chilli could be fresh, as it is the one you have to take from the front of the counter, which could be sitting there for a while. But the food and portion size was great. Will definitely be back.

Grabbed lunch from here, been here a few times now and the food has been really good each time. Portions are good too when you dine in Lots of seating in food court

Delicious and authentic Nasi Lemak. The portion size was very decent, and an array of tasty ingredients was in it. The only complaint is with the roti canai (not pictured), it tasted like it was one of those frozen reheated ones that you can get from the supermarket. Im use to the fluffy and light rotis, and the one from here was hard and flat. Pretty disappointing, but other than that the meal was moreish.
Rishi
The only place at the food court with a vegan menu. Excellent vegan options and good value. Fast service.

Perfect location inside the foodcourt Right in the eyesight since you walk in Authentic Malaysia flavor Love the Nasi Goreng and this beautiful Laksa very much

Best Malaysian in town and excellent food court overall. Their Rendang and Laksa are the best I've had and we've had many!

Dropped by Ponsonby food court to get my South East Asian fix and decided to order a roti canai and rendang curry from Kampung Malaysia.

Like:

1. Good variety on the menu that I will definitely come back for. Looks authentic Malaysian except for the very “blurr” Filipino staff at the cashier taking orders who was not familiar with Malaysian food.

2, Delicious rendang curry and roti canai.

3. Had keropok udang (prawn crackers) which I bought two big bags of.

Definitely coming back again. You need to serve Teh Tarik and Teh Ahlia to complete the menu guys. That would make my meal here complete!

Sorry but rendang was atrocious and mostly consisted of oil, at $22 I was expecting it to be half decent. I tipped out most of the oily curry sauce in the sink to try and salvage the meat but was still terrible 🙁

Ambiance: 3 ( it’s inside Ponsonby food court)
Staff: 3 ( It took a while for them to come and take my order even though it was just me there)
Food: 3 ( it tasted like nothing special and needed more seasoning)
Price: 4 ( cheap and good price for the food you get)

AMBIENCE: was inside a food court
SERVICE/STAFF: 4/5
FOOD 5/5
PRESENTATION 4/5
QUANTITY/PRICE 4/5

The service was good and the staff could have smiled and interacted a little more. the food tasted good and had a lot of flavours. The presentation was average. The quantity for the price of the food was really affordable. Will definitely go back and try out other things from the menu.

It was alright it was ok. I don’t really know how I feel about this place. I ordered nasi lemak and it had all the components of a nasi lemak but corners were cut. I guess I just feel cheated and borderline disappointed. Injustice I tell ya

Try the curry noodles. Mint as! All noodle dishes are great, I'm also partial to the sambal fried rice though I wasn't too keen on #6 crispy chicken. Good prices, comes out quick, spicy if you want that.

Wow, this is a really cool restaurant in train station. I really like the atmosphere in the restaurant. The malaysian food they offer is authentic and great, especially Teh Tarik.I order it every time and it makes me cheerful.

Regular patron here as they have the usual popular Malaysian dishes like the nasi lemak , mee goreng , beef rendang , char quay teow , beef stir fry , nasi goreng and many more and always hit the spot with very reasonable prices . Although it’s not the same as the authentic food cooked at Malaysia - KL , Penang or Melaka , it still gives you a flavour to expect when visiting Malaysia for the real deal. Highly recommended tho if you are after a quick and cheap meal around Ponsonby

The satay chicken noodles are so good! They almost taste homemade with all the vegetables, the potatoes complement the noodles so well! I will definitely be heading back!

Quick stop into ponsonby for dinner, was quite packed on a Thursday night. Chose number 23 the roti rendang and number 28 roti canai. Weren’t waiting too long for food, arrived fresh and hot. The restaurant prices weren’t disappointing as the food was presented beautifully and was definitely quality. The roti were soft, hot and puffy. The rendang was very flavoursome with plenty of different spices, the beef was super tender and fell apart on my spoon. The canai wasn’t as flavoursome but was tasty nonetheless.

I’m a huge fan of food courts. Pretty good Malaysian food, for a good price plus with lots of choices. Decently sized servings and pretty speedy serving time. Would definitely recommend for any meal of the day and for a student looking for something affordable and satisfying.

I've been a long time customer with this foodcourt and it has possibly one of the best Malaysian restaurant I've been to in Auckland taste and price wise:) I like the Malaysian restaurant as their menu offers a wide range of meals from, rice and noodles.

I recommend the char kuey teow as it has a good price to it, and has a good handful of noodles and chicken (I normally order chicken for this dish) each time you order and the chicken laksa for spicy beginners, as it isn't hot to taste the soup and the noodle is yummy with bits of chicken :9

The atmosphere of the foodcourt could be better, especially the bathroom but otherwise the bathroom situation there are many seats to choose from. I like the seats outside when it is sunny, where you can overview the stretch of the Ponsonby street the foodcourt is at be separated from other costumers, like a getaway. But the inside is also quite chill as you have seat and wait for your meal.

I had Nasi Lemak at this place on Sunday and while I was eating I found a piece of wire in my mouth - like a big staple. Almost swallowed it and would probably have choked. I took this up to the counter and asked for a refund but the staff wouldn't believe that I had found the wire in their food! They offered me half of my money back 'because I had eaten half the food'. They didn't seem to care that their food could have killed me. Very poor and dangerous - avoid! Plus it wasn't even tasty.

Having lunch here this afternoon with friends, order mee goreng and chicken curry laksa. As a Malaysian..the taste of both items that we order is surely not authentic. The chef is not a Malaysian. The mee goreng is liked mee rebus taste n chicken curry laksa sauce us too thick.

Came by the Foodcourt with a group of friends so that we could get what we felt like. I went to try the Hokkien Mee at Kampung Malaysia. I found that the sauce didn't taste right, a bit too sweet and missing a very important ingredient, fried pork fat.

the other items looked alright but haven't had a chance to try it yet.

I have to say. This is not even close to authentic Malaysian food. We ordered Nasi goreng and Chicken lemak (probably the two most famous/popular dishes of Malaysia) and they were very bad.

The nasi goreng was simply chinese fried rice and the chicken lemak was a chicken curry with potatoes.

Chicken lemak is supposed to be rich with deep flavor and spices, served with pandan (green) rice or coconut infused rice. Here, plain old rice will do (noone will notice huh?). The lemak was tasting like a indian curry from a few stalls down. Not lemak!

They forgot the dried fish to go with the peanuts too... these small details are 100% essential to call the dish "lemak".

And the slice of lemon with the "nasi goreng"... ?

It seemed to me like the owners/chefs are cheating the general public into thinking they are having Malaysian food when really they are not. Anyone from Malaysia would have been insulted by these dishes. Kampung Style in Glen Eden is TOTALLY different and is real Malaysian food.

I felt compeled to ring after and give my feedback to be passed onto the owners (who aparently to my suprise are from Malaysia). First time I have gone that far but I genuinley felt ripped off.

This place is always full of surprises. Been here several times now, their food never disappoint us.

Authentic street style Malaysian food at a very reasonable price. We love their Laksa and Beef rendang. Delicious!

In addition to my previous review of PFC, where essentially I suggest trying different foods you may like, from different stores and then narrowing down your future selection to your favourites.. This place has my favourite roti! If I order dishes from other stores, I always come here to buy at least one roti as an accompaniment. Delicious and not very greasy. Tonight had two roti - just for luck hehe.

I'm #141 ranked foodie and am trying to crack the double digit territory, but hey I've seen people rate KFC's and Subway's on this thing so why not ...

The Laksa. For $11.50 I dare you to find a tastier Sth East Asian dish in the 09 for that price. The man who took my order had the personality of a cardboard box, but you don't go to a food court for the service do ya?

As I sat there in the food court eating my Laksa next to an old Asian man who resembled Mr. Miyagi, I pondered life, the food court is a great place to people watch. A couple walk passed me, she asks him "have you been scratching your eczema again?".

That conversation sums up food courts well. A place to eat non-pretentious, warm and tasty food that's filled with everyday people going about their simple lives.
They used to be really good with good balance between price and quality and quantity but now it's all skewed towards price with average quality. Go to dishes here are Chicken Laksa and Roti Canai (even though the rotis are not half as good as other Malaysian places around).

Tried the Laksa here for the first time, WOW!! Best Laksa I've ever had, I was so surprised as I didn't expect it to be that great. Huge portion which I couldn't even finish, filled with flavoursome soup, a mix of thin vermicelli noodles and egg noodles, chicken, tofu, egg, dried onions and beans. The flavour and texture of the Laksa soup was a real winner.

Highly recommend if you are a Laksa lover!

I really enjoy my char quay teow. It tasted the way i like it (mild). I have always love the vibe in ponsonby food court. For those who yet to visit this place....you won't be disappointed!

I recommend this stall.

Good food, value for money. I couldn't even finish the whole plate!!
Agnes Yuen
Had lunch with friends. We had the laksa, fried kway teow, both the selection is disappointing. It is not authentic at all. Both dishes was kind of sweet. The laksa was not lemak and have no Malaysian curry taste to it. I could find more satisfaction with an instant packet noodle of curry laksa. The fried kway teow noddle was also sweet. Sad to say its no comparison to any Malaysian food we have tasted.

A real cool Malaysian eatery within the multi-cuisine food court. Service is quick. Staff is friendly and courteous. Food was nice as well.

Tori canai meal, chicken and potato dish with fried pancake- my friend ordered this. Very delicious with the fried pancake. Although there was more potato than chicken, she enjoyed. Perhaps more balance of a chicken

Best laksa ever!!! At $11.50 for a big bowl of hot chicken laksa - you can't go wrong. We had chicken satay, laksa and a roti. Everything was fresh and flavoursome and not greasy at all. The roti was the nicest I've ever had, soft and fluffy and so fresh. One of the best options at the food court, and we definitely will be returning.
Chrisca Tipace
I've never really had Malaysian before so it's a first time. I was impressed! I had the curry, partner had the satay. Came to a surprise with the portion but it was well worth it. But yeah, the portion for us was a lot given that we only eat half of the portion. Lol. But still good!!!

I'll take a number 28 please with extra roti!!
I never order anything else at the Ponsonby international food court. It's the best chicken curry.
The food court itself is clean, lively and there are many different styles of food to choose from.

It's my place to go for Laksa. I wasn't a laksa fan till I found this place.

The taste is just soooo good that I always finish all soup in the big bowl haha. And staff is always polite and friendly. Definitely worth a try (or more)...believe me :)

It has become a tradition for my partner and I to get a #28 every Sunday for dinner during the winter months. It is the ultimate chicken curry.
Catherine Bliss
It is an authentic Thai cuisine offer a range of popular
sweet and spicy. I have tried the Tom Yum soup with prawn, pretty sour and
spicy. There is no concern about the food, just feel like a little bit
overprice. You would give a try if not too much worry about the price.
Karina
I love this restaurant! Is clean the attendants are always smilling and ready to serve! In my last visit I tried the Beef rendang, was an explosion of flavors with tender beef that was falling apart as soon as i crave in, and the roti was fresh and hot as.I would definitely come back anytime soon.

Love anywhere in ponsonby food court and this one is a regular! Roti canai is goooood, big portion and get two roti! Definitely recommend this place / ponsonby food court!

So many food choices in this little food hall.

Decided to try the malaysian. menu offers typical array of penang currys etc. Opted for the roti with the chicken curry.

Delicious in every way! Roti very fresh and tasty. the chicken curry with potatoes was out of this world! Every mouthful just bursting with flavours and warming.

I would have given this place 5 stars if it wasn't for the price. shows on the website here as 11.50 for the curry yet was charged 13.50. Time to update it guys.

Will definatly be back for more (had to stop my partner from licking the bowl clean)
Grace Mackinnon
Love the Roti Canai but decided to go for the Roti Rendang tonight and was very disappointed. $17.50 for a small takeaway with two rotis and no rice! I asked how big it was and the woman said it would be a full takeaway container size so I thought $17.50 was a fair price and enough food for my boyfriend and I. When I got home it was only half full! The beef wasn't falling apart like normal rendang it was chunky and chewy in a runny sauce as if it hadn't been stewed long enough. We had to go get cheeseburgers after as we were so hungry!! Hopefully it was just an off night!
Tony
I have eaten here many times and to be honest food is good for a food court, I enjoy the Chicken Curry or the Rendang with a side of Roti. However recently we ate in the food court and decided on the Vietnamese place next to Kampung, my nephew dropped his napkin on the floor and asked the man at Kampung counter for one napkin. He rudely pointed my nephew away and I asked what had happened he said, "If you don't eat here we don't give you napkin." Was shocked as I eat at Kampung once a month and never experienced such a rude man. Plenty of Malaysian restaurants to choose from that value their current and future customers.

Best meal I've had in ages! Cleaned the whole plate, my partner even said "I want to lick the plate clean" after he had finished. Great service her also! Will be a regular this was amazing!
