First, this place has the best Peking Duck in town--the chefs are both from Beijing (Peking!), so that helps. The other dishes are generally well done, also--the fungus is some of the best I've had in Auckland, etc. The service is fairly attentive as well; only once was I made to wait past the booked time for a table, but that was on Chinese New Year, so I can't complain too much. I do have some issues, however: one is the cleanliness in the bathroom. Ghads! Why can't they keep it clean? There's splattering on the wall, wet floors every time, and a urinal that looks like it hasn't been cleaned. The carpets in the place look dirty as--I think they're the same ones that were there in the last restaurant, before Sunnytown opened up. And last, I have a few times smelt cigarette smoke wafting from the back--either from the kitchen (chefs smoking out the back and vacuum effect, or from a private room where people are being cheeky). Who knows. But I don't hold these things against the place, really, because overall it's still a classy joint with reliably good food.

It is a Chinese( Zyechuen) restaurant. Famous for Peking duck dishes which are vry good. They also serve quiet a lot of spicy dishes. Some of them can be very spicy and can lump your lips & tongues after eating them. Choose very carefully

Great food. Great place to laugh and talk. I’ll be coming back.

Nice food we enjoyed our dinner

Most interesting Chinese restaurant I've ever been in, in Auckland. Very diverse menu and everything I've tried so far have been great!
Changmin Sun
Very nice roast duck and cumin lamb. Thoroughly enjoyed our experience.

Delicious food, and very nice staff 10/10 would recommend!

Nice place for Peking duck and northern China cuisine.

Good portion and delicious roast duck.

Have dinner here for twice and both visit were delightful. My friend is from Beijing and he thinks highly of the Peking duck here. Authentic recipe and excellent dip.

My new fave Chinese restaurant! The staff were really attentive and the food flavoursome and delicious. Especially the Peking duck, the roti and the stuffed eggplant! Must haves! Also the restaurant is nicely decorated and clean. Big plus was the free wifi!!

Food was ok, but a little bit salty. Everything is fine, except the staff. The staff there is not friendly, and feel like they are the boss. If you want to eat here, then eat, if not, get out. I am not sure whether the staff for our table is not in the good mood on that day, but for us, it was the not a nice experience.

My partner and I have been here a lot. Hau has the best Kung pao chicken I have ever had. I have tried Kung pao chicken in multiple restaurants in NZ and China FYI. It is also consistently good at Hua, I would highly recommend it. Some dishes do seem a bit expensive and service has been disappointing sometimes so deduct 1 star for this.

Went here for the Peking duck. Well it was duck, but it was brown and not red. I love the red Peking duck, not the brown on. Anyone know of a place with the red version?

Went there last night, the restaurant was about 80% empty, there were only two staff waitressing, service was okay in the beginning, we stay until 10pm and towards the end the staff kind of ignored us when we asked for plates and cutlery to cut a cake (it was a friend’s birthday). Food wise, it was average, I wouldn’t say it’s traditional Beijing taste, almost all the soup in the menu is out of stock, we ordered one pecking duck and the potion was so small, the pancake was not fresh and it doesn’t taste good. Hmmm I have mixed feelings towards this restaurant because the first time I went there a few years ago, the food was okay, then second time last night it got worst.

Busy Chinese restaurant with a range of dishes tailored to the northern flavours. As Beijing-ners, naturally we went to try their Peking duck, it was good and fantastic presentation. However the skin wasn't crispy enough and not enough sides to go with the duck meat to make pancakes! The duck also lacked a bit of flavour/inherent fat that brings out the flavour. All of their other dishes though, was on the sweet side for some reason. Good ambience in general and large portions- so I'll probably visit again!

The service was actually fast when we had dinner here. Tried their Peking duck which went well with the pancake. Typical setting of a Chinese restaurant, the staff and the manager was attentive.

This is a standard, typical Chinese restaurant. However some of the dishes are actually well presented like the duck- which is different than most Chinese restaurants where they just chuck the food on the plate. The food is tasty but sometimes too salty (maybe MSG). The food comes out fast and the portions are decent. The lobster is fresh.

We've been a few times to Hua's. Overall, our experience wasn't bad. The service was good. The Peking duck was also tasty, we did order in advance though so we got it pretty quickly. The plating was nice and quite creative for some dishes.
Becstasy
food came out super fast, and we both enjoyed what we ordered (fried pork, green beans and lamb). there is a huge menu, so many choices. unfortunately my first choice wasn't available and they forgot to give us rice. generous portions meant we didn't really need the rice though and still had a lot to take away
CrazyCatLady_EmmaC
Went there for birthday celebration. The service was average and they serve dessert before we even finish our mains. Recommend their lamb ribs and spicy beef.

On New Year's Eve a friend needed to go to hospital suddenly. After 8.30 pm he was told he could have something to eat. He had missed dinner so I thought prawns would be lovely for him. I went from the hospital to Hua 's and found stir fried prawns on the menu. The dish in the photo looked good. What he got was disgusting. Stir fried undersized prawns still in the shells and because they must have been stale the shells did not come off easily. He tried to eat a few and I tried one. Half was still in the shell and it was tough. So for $29.90 it was an absolute disgrace and I still feel annoyed by what I received for a friend in hospital who needed something to eat. It is the worst restaurant food experience I have ever had. If I had been in the restaurant eating I would have sent them back. So don't go there. They do not honour customers.

I've always wondered whether the owners and families of different Chinese restaurants mark one another down on Zomato to try and affect the competition, because Hua's Restaurant definitely doesn't deserve a rating as low as 2.7. Everyone who eats there clearly doesn't think that low of them either, because when we went, they were absolutely packed out. Peking roast duck is their signature dish, and if you ring and book in advance and go on a Wednesday night, you can have a whole duck for only $38. This is incredible value, because it's $38 for half a duck on any other night, and the special is $58 if you go on a Friday. Because you have already ordered the main, this comes out pretty quickly once you arrive and are seated. We also ordered some vegetables; all up it was so much food and we had to take home. The duck was excellent though, and we had my partner's brother come over the next night to share the rest! Only small critique would be the servers - they're always so keen to clear the dishes, that they'll try to take your half finished food from underneath your face. You have to almost slap them away and tell them you're not finished. Excessive efficiency!

I think huas restaurant is great value for money and location. The food was tasty and came in generous amounts as well as being fairly priced. Especially their weekly Beijing duck deals.
The menu is really big so if you love variety like me it's a huge plus.

I went there to mainly have the peking duck dish. When we got there the waitress said we had to wait 40min for it since we didn't order in advance but maybe since it was a monday night the dish came within 15min. However we order two other extra dishes as we thought it would be a long wait for the peaking duck but everything ended serving at the same time. I guess it was a good thing. The duck was good but the second dish that came with the duck was extremely disappointing. It was duck bones soup with vege &tofu but what we had was literally duck bones with oil water, there was no such thing as vege. The tofu was extremely cold when we bite it so we ask to get it reheated. Second time round it was still just luke warm. Overall only the peking duck is nice, but still would not go back again.

we waited half an hour for a dish after we finished our dinner already. until we showed up at counter they told us it's ready to server and we need to pay for it.

Chinese food with a creative twist. It's good if you wanna try something new! A bit pricey as dishes are about $25-45 but worth trying!!!!!

very oily, staff not very helpfull, nice cutlery but that is about it..

Restaurant is 80% empty...

Went to Hua's and used a Deal Voucher for Yum Char. The voucher said we would be given 12 dishes. The first that came out was ducks feet. They were cold and rubbery. We then got a sweet dish???, sort of chocolately with a white jelly top - this was almost acceptable but have never been served a dessert so early in the meal. Then the knuckle beef came out - with no meat whatsoever - all bone. The chickens feet were as bad as the ducks feet. Then another dish came out that looked like tripe but it was the fatty skin of something - also like rubber. Another meat dish - this was undercooked and we couldn't even cut through it, let alone chew it. Everything had the same taste - hoison sauce. Pork dumplings had the most strange taste, the steamed dumplings had a burnt taste, the custard pastry had no taste. All in all, not one dish came up to scratch. We eat out a lot and have never had a bad experience . . . well, not until now. I have a cast iron stomach but I had a very upset stomach later that day. If you want a nice Yum Char, stay well away from this place. The food served here would have to be the worst we have ever had. Will be contacting the company selling the deal vouchers as it was totally unacceptable.

I really hate to say it but it was the worst yum cha I've had in my life.
Most disappointing being the pork spare ribs, it was literally pork fat on bone. Duck feet was old and dry, prawn dumplings fell apart.
and getting charged for tea at the end was a bad way to end the experience.
Tea wasn't included in the voucher, so we had to pay. but when buying a voucher for "yum cha", meaning "drinking tea" in chinese. you would expect it to be included.
Its almost like paying for cheese for your pizza voucher.

Thelma: well wot an experience one I would rather forget, served chicken feet told them to take away. food was ok not much flavour and didn't know what I was eating. Won't go back even if you paid me.

Louise: was looking forward to my first yum cha and was bitterly disappointed. Service was attentative, food was unattractive and tasteless. Would have gotten more flavour out of one KFC popcorn chicken ball then what we received with all six dishes.
Didn't stay long. Didn't want to waste my time or money. Walked straight out into C&B for some contented nourishment.

Thelma scores 0
Louise gleefully rubs hands together and agrees.
We went to the restaurant for dinner before, and felt it's good. So we purchased a coupon for Yum Cha. But I thought it's the worst of Yum Cha I tried. The taste was horrible. Definitely not worth $39 for 4 people. We had to order more dishes.

We went there for yum char yesterday (after purchasing the deal voucher they had on offer). It was the worst yum char we have ever had - we waited 30 minutes to be seated (even though we had made a booking) and even then, no staff came over to offer us any tea/drinks... we had to ask! That ordeal took another 15 minutes! When the food finally arrived it was horrible! Definitely not even worth the $39 I paid for the deal let alone it being valued at $78!

Lucky the company was great and the fact that we had Movenpick afterwards!
NomNomPanda
Went here for yum cha today. Dishes had good flavour, except for the spare ribs which had too much garlic, but they did not feel fresh, despite having been ordered off the menu*. The yum char menu was also smaller than at many other restaurants, and you had to pay $1 per person for the tea.

(* BTW: I disagree with a previous reviewer who said that "this defeats the whole yum cha style of dining"---in Hong Kong these days, all yum cha places apart from the "historic" ones get you to order off menus. It might be less fun, but it does mean you get to see the full spectrum of what is available, and the food should theoretically be fresher)

Very disappointed - we dined on Friday night and ordered a squid dish which was mainly globules of noodles and you were lucky to get 5 small pieces of squid on the entire plate. Disgusting.
The beef and asparagus dish was tasty but it wasn't asparagus - we questioned what vegetable it was and was given the answer that asparagus wasn't in season which is incorrect - asparagus has recently come into season which is why we ordered the dish.
Would not recommend, would not return.

With the reviews prior to our dining experience, I have some reservations in dining at Hua's. But I was so impressed with the pleasant staff and the manager, they served the Peking duck and the rest in a flash!!! Being a Nurse, I am very particular with hygiene and I have noted that the staff setting the duck in our plate is wearing gloves, wearing a mask..that's amazing...Yes English is not their first language but they can communicate. What's the biggy? My family and I had enjoyed the food, service and the place. We dine regularly and try different cuisine and this is definitely one of our faves...

I was a bit worried given some of the reviews, but our group of 8 who were using a deal voucher for the peking duck (plus we ordered 5 other dishes) were very happy with the experience. The food was fantastic, and the service is in line with what I have experienced in Asian restaurants all over the world.
Don't go expecting over the top wonderful staff. They get the job done politely, but english is not the first language so can be a bit more effort to request something not on the menu (off the menu is no prob!).

Definitely keen to go back - pretty good value and decent servings. So, so tasty!!

Dined here tonight. Bought a voucher for half price Peking duck. I booked a table of 3 for 6pm for a Saturday and told them I had a voucher, as the voucher conditions did mention that bookings for duck had to be made 24 hours in advance. I had originally tried booking for lunch on a weekday, but was told that someone had already preordered all the duck for that day. We turned up early at around 5.20pm. We were greeted and seated promptly. Duck was being served up by the chef at another table when we arrived. We also ordered eggplant, beans with minced pork in a sizzling claypot, pork and green onion dumplings and pineapple chicken and white rice. The eggplant claypot dish and the pineapple chicken arrived with our rice about 5-10 minutes after ordering. Our eggplant claypot dish arrived bubbling. It was tasty and garlicky, just the way like it. It was a tad too oily, but otherwise enjoyable. The chicken was delicious, nice crispy batter and tasty tangy sauce. The rice was soft and fluffy. We were told that the duck was going to be another ten minutes, but that was understandable as another table had just been served and we had arrived early anyway. Soon the dumplings arrived, and we realised we ordered too much.
Excited about the Peking duck, we slowed down and it arrived. The chef carefully carving up the duck was an interesting watch. This was the first time I was having Peking duck, so didn't really know what to expect with the taste. I have had duck before but not the pancake style. The garlic sauce was nice, I found the thicker sauce for the pancake a bit overpowering, but my dinnermates thoroughly enjoyed it.
It was overall a pleasant experience and the food was nice. Staff were helpful too at explaining the different sauces and types of pancakes for the Peking duck.

We bought a voucher deal for a Peking duck. We read the reviews but decided to give it a go anyway. Unfortunately all the reviews are correct! An hour and twenty mins later we are still waiting for our food :( we have been offered free soup as the oven broke apparently. But by this time we are over waiting. Only come here if you have a high level of patience!!
When the duck arrived it was a smaller portion size than I expected and not very tasty. We also ordered the sweet and sour pork which was very nice and a decent size. It wasn't enough to get us to come back...

Not impressed at all. Food was nice hence the star but the service was terrible. We brought a half price duck pancake deal voucher for two and decided to go early Saturday evening. We were asked if we had booked which we hadn't and this seemed to be a nascence even though only a 1/4 of the restaurant was occupied. We ordered two mains plus the duck. We were served a duck soup which we didn't order but on calling over the wait staff were told it was complementary when ordering the duck pancakes. On paying they charged us $15 for this and refused to refund as we hadn't 'pre booked' ??? We will not be going back here in a hurry

Worst ever yum cha.. Overpriced and they served us prawns that were off. When we told the waitress about this she smiled like it was nothing. Service is slow and food took forever to come out. If you want quality Chinese food I would not recommend this place!!

We went to this place as the one over the road was packed, and we couldn't bothered waiting on a Saturday. We wanted Yum Cha, which they did but you had to order off the alacarte menu, this defeats the whole yum cha style of dining. I know, I am Chinese.

The food was undercooked, ie the rice pastry wasn't cooked through and was very doughy, the flavours were plain and under seasoned. I feel I could've done better.

Service was very slow, and they kept forgetting I wanted chilli oil and soya sauce, I had to remind them several times. I would not recommend this place and will not return again.

I've driven past Hua's Restaurant many times and remember going to the old one that it replaced so I took up the opportunity to visit while they were selling a $40 for $80 deal voucher.

The decor is new and characteristic, although not my style. The service was quite slow but friendly enough. Their specialty is the Peking Duck I'm guessing since it's a Beijing style restaurant and it was good. Other restaurants usually botch up the pancake that you wrap the duck in but this one was delicious. It's pricey though, like most other things on the menu.

Would've given it only two stars were it not for the Peking Duck. Good deal with the voucher but wouldn't necessarily recommend it to those without.

We went there for dinner.... the service was terribly slow!!! We waited for about an hour to have the food on the table. On top of that...the Beijing duck we ordered was tasteless ...and pricey as well..half duck was $58!!! The portion of the food was very small. We ordered prawn with tofu stir fry...OMG the prawn was so less and the portion was unbelievably little considering the price was $28. Definately not a restaurant that we would recommed to our friends and family. The ridiculous thing of all....we spent more than $120 and the BOSS said...no credit card!! WWHHAATT.....even Japan $3 shop in the city receives credit card. Shame on you!!

花家怡园 New market are clean and tidy, well decorated at busy kyber pass, foods are great taste, but not very big serving. So half of the cost you are paying are for the above. (a very common fried rice are Nzd24). The 3 waitresses are nice and friendly, but do not understand much English, they work very hard whole evening as the restaurant were very busy as it was Sunday evening, also many coupon deals's customer came in, so we waited for VERY long time. Not enough waitress is a weak point as they also have to work as cashier. The restaurant also do not have any parking space as they stated on some chinese site that they have lease 300 parking space. So, blame the mangement.
Hollie
Went there for dinner, the service was really slow. We were waiting for 30 mnt for the food to come out and another 15 mnt for the rest of the food that we ordered. The Beijing duck wasn't quite what we expected... very disappointed!! The price was fairly expensive...never return again...considering the service and the taste of the food.

I bought a deal voucher yesterday and thought I'd chance it as it was so cheap ($40 for $80 worth of food/drinks) and I was going to the movies in Newmarket anyway. It's a good location at the bottom of Kyber Pass near Broadway.

The restaurant was full of Chinese diners at 6.30pm which I took as a good sign and I was right, the food was really good. The waitress we had was really friendly and helpful and the food came out in good time without having to wait too long. The menu had glossy pictures for every meal which I would normally consider to be tacky but was professionally done and made choosing what we wanted much easier.

I had the eye fillet and asparagus stir fry which for $22 was a real bargain and amazing! Definitely not your standard Chinese takeaway! My friend had another beef shank stir fry dish which he didn't enjoy as much but was still ok. We also got a plain fried rice dish which was also really good and such a large amount that we couldn't finish it all. They have really nice Asian beer too which comes in a huge 600ml bottle which was good value for only $8.

The decor of the restaurant is also very nice and of a high standard. Overall we had an excellent dinner and I'm planning on buying another voucher now because it was definitely worth it!
