Review Malaysia Recipes - Auckland Central

Thomas Teng-Yan Loke
Cozy and friendly place with some of the most authentic Malaysian dishes. There are less than ten tables but usually booking is not necessary. The kang kong is seasonal. Recommended are the curry fish head and hokkien mee. Dishes are quite pricey, especially the $5 teh tarik if you have the craving...

Good food, could be a bit spicier as I ordered. Otherwise, it's a great Malaysian restaurant.

Good take away spot for Malaysian food. The Nasi is pretty good. Friendly service too

The food never fails to please... Tried just about every dish on the menu and loved them all.

Great food. You just need to be clear what you want as their English is not good.

Decent Malaysian food, staff were friendly and food was served promptly. Really enjoyed all the dishes which were authentic and prices were not too expensive.

Tried this place a few weeks ago when we were in the vicinity. Unfortunately a lot of the dishes on the menu were no longer available. We were told that the owner is going to sell the business off and hence are cutting down the number of dishes they are offering. We had a Hokkien fried noodles and mixed (flat noodle and deep fried vermicelli) wot tan hor which were both very tasty. Love the wot tan hor as not many places sell the mixed version of it. It’s a shame that this eatery is closing soon and we didn’t get to try their other dishes.

I really like their asam laksa. Portion is a bit small, but for the price, it is ok I guess. Have been here thrice, and would definitely go back. I just want a bit more meat and veggies on the dishes, but overall it is good :)

We have been here a few times and last two visits we had Black Pepper pork and Mee goreng. Prepared to consistency and perfection. We will definitely be back.

Food was not too bad, but the portions were ridiculously small, so much so, that I felt ripped off. There wasn't even very much rice, which would at least have bulked up the portions.
On this alone, I would not go back again. Disappointed!!!

Worst experience in recent three years!!! None of rice noodles is longer than 4cm, no fish head in fish head rice noodle! I feel I am cheated!!!! 14dollar I prefer to give to the needy!!

Really authentic Malaysian food with nice service. No frills so don't expect ambience but that is fine for the price. One of the only places in Auckland that gets the wok hei taste in their fried noodles. Highly recommend their wat tan hor and char kway teow

Where do I start ?,oh yes the portions ..are pathetic, very average range and very average quality ,the staff can't understand English ,no one ever seems to be in the place ..( when I've gone to dominos opposite it),, thought I would try it ...never again ..I confronted them about it ..and they told me the rent was to high on the place ?,,and does that mean they have to reduce the portions ?,,and quality ?,good way to go out of business ,...when are people going to learn how to run a decent food business, plus no venting or extractors in the place ,.smells bad as well!,😡😡😡😡😡😡😡 I'll stick to pizzas ..

Good value for money and awesome staff , I have to say the curry dishes are exceptional and I even saw the kitchen where they are making there own sauces , come here for authentic Malaysian cuisine

Went here yesterday for dinner and I loved their curry chicken laksa! Has everything you want in it and tastes amazing. Friendly atmosphere. Will definitely be back!!

Have been here for few times. Tried asam laksa, pan mee, nasi lemak, won ton mee, curry puffs and few others. They tasted pretty good. Can't really fault this one.

I was curious to try this place out as a fellow foodie heard from her hairdresser that they make good Malaysian food. Their hokkien mee wasn't bad, although I found the laksa soup to be a lot 'thinner' than I'm used to. Even with the coconut milk vs water ratio being slightly too watery for me, there was still a big oily film on top so I decided not to drink much of the soup, which is my favourite part. Oddly for a Malaysian restaurant, they don't ask how spicy you want your food beforehand. Thankfully, they will serve sambal on the side if requested. Overall, I think I've had more authentic Malaysian at establishments closer to my side of Auckland; however, Malaysian Recipes should meet the standard if you're craving a quick fried noodle. They're set up as more of a takeaway but there is room to dine in as well.

Had the lemon chicken and was pretty dissapointed with it, portion just didn't feel like it was worth the $13.50 and then presentation was average just rice and maybe 6 chicken cuts, fair to say I had more rice than chicken. Most likely will only go back to try the fish and chips! 😑

Very disappointed that I could not have a great Malaysian food in Malaysia Recipe.

There were plenty of car park to park but the restaurant was pretty small, may be could accommodate 20 people.
The open kitchen was not a good idea as the ventilation was not working well and the cooking smell and oil remained in the shop. With the windows closed can you imagine how bad the environment was?

We ordered pork, curry fish, squid and grass noodle soup, rendang beef, vegetarian fish and fried lady fingers, long bean and buah petai (a kind of Malaysia bean about 1 dollar coin size and smell stinky when and after you eat).
Other than the pork, every dish was very disappointed. The colour of beef rendang was not dark brownish red curry colour but yellowish curry colour which was not authentic Malaysian rendang. The meat was not tendered enough and very small pieces. I had never had squid and grass noodle soup back in Malaysia before. We were told it supposedly to be sour taste, so we expected it to be something like tom yum but it did not taste sour enough, nor spicy and no other ingredients except for really squid and grass noodle only. The fish curry was not as good as what could be found from the Malaysian restaurants out there.

We ordered soya bean drink the staff forgot to serve us.
We then ordered 2 Teh Tarik (Malaysian pull-tea) only 1 was served.
Service was not good.

I rather spend the money else where then having a meal that could not satisfy my taste buds.

Sorry no photos.

This place used to be great when it was owned by the previous owners and was a fish n chip shop. Now its a terrible malaysian restaurant. The two times I've eaten there the dishes have been cold in the middle and luke warm on the outside with 2 pieces of meat that were stupidly big. Definitely do not recommend it.

The best Malaysian food in north shore so far, we try before the cereal pawn, four heavenly kings , Malaysian style tofu, curry laksa and Asam fish ( curry fish ) is the best in Auckland.

Had a catering order where they sent in food on time and with the great service. In addition to that owner gave away free entree with the huge order. 5/5 for their service and food quality was on point too.

This is my third time trying out at this hidden gem and it still has the WOW factor hence I'm writing this review.

The pan mee is delicious and the broth is heavily flavoured with 'ikan bilis' stock (fried anchovies) just like how its done in Malaysia. Probably the only pan mee in Auckland that is really authentic. So if you are craving for pan mee, come over to this place.

The Penang chow kuey teow (fried rice noodles) is really delicious too and has the wok flavour. Fish head noodle soup is not bad too... Have been told their Marmite chicken is really good but will have to come back next other time!

Love the authenticity of this Malaysian food, so happy it is on the shore too! Roti canai with chicken curry is mouth watering and my hubby loves the Beef Rendang. Looking forward to it again this weekend!

Yum Yum Yum! This place is awesome :) Really delicious food! We had Beef Rendang, Satay, Roti Canai, Chicken Curry, Chicken Rice and Sizzling Beef and it was all delicious and authentic. Only complaints are they forgot to give us the rice and the portions were small for the price. Other than that we will be back for sure! Thanks!

It's EXTREMELY difficult to find an authentic Malay restaurant here in NZ but this one defiantly impressed me! Very authentic, tasty Malay food with friendly and very humble staff. Although it's not flash inside, it reminds me of when I used to live in Malaysia as a kid. If you're not picky on environment but want true authentic Malay food, this place is spot on!

This was by far the worst Malaysian food I have eaten in NZ. The laksa was bland and the beef rendang was inedible. The beef was horrendously chewy and tasted like they had dumped in a whole bunch of lemongrass and oil and nothing else. The chicken cashew was watery and tasteless and they forgot the accompanying rice. I would never pay to eat here again, or for free actually.

The best Malaysian food in the country so far! Very authentic. Very highly recommended. The nasi lemak and char kuey that are better than some of the hawker stalls that I've tried in Malaysia.

The Jewel of Mokoia Rd. The Service is friendly and quick. Ordered the seafood Laksa $13.90 and Nasi Goreng $10. Great sized dishes and great value for money.

I'm normally hesitant about buying Laksa as it never tastes that authentic and I'm always left disappointed. But this is the exception to the rule. Perfect balance of delicious soup, noodles cooked perfectly. The Nasi Goreng was delicious and delivered on taste and ingredients. The only disappointment you will have is that you didn't know about this place earlier!
