Review Sunrise Hongkong Cafe - Auckland Central

SChan
Had a craving for a Century Egg Congee, chanced across this cafe from the google reviews. Overall the food was decent and well priced. Though the porridge was more 3.5 stars I gave 4 in consideration of the price point and service was quick. Would return for a quick bite if the opportunity arises The duck noodles looks great but did not get a chance to try.

Probably the most affordable restaurant in central Auckland??? Can't find places which offer main size meals for under $15 these days! Finally got to try this gem after having it saved in a list for a very long time, food was pretty good and it was popular during dinner service. Forgot to take a photo before eating the braised beef noodle soup.

I come here as often as I can from Manurewa as their dishes are fabulous, fresh, and inexpensive AAA+++

One of my favorite places to eat in Auckland! Despite it's an old fashioned one with it's long history in the business there are so many goodies listing on the menu. Especially Cantonese hotpot, inexpensive but super delicious! Lunch special $8.8 you get a black pepper beef rice. It's cheap but don't worry it doesn't mean the quality goes down, tasty as it should be. See?! I even forgot to take pictures of the foods we ordered today. Anyway, just go and try you will definitely like it.

No complaints considering many dishes are still under $10 in 2022. I just don’t understand why the sweet and sour pork is so red lol.
Darren Ren
Slightly over priced but food was decent
Tracy X
My go to place for a hearty meal, great selection of dishes, homemade comfort food taste, and super good value for money.
King Wei
No complaints since its 10.5$ a meal??? Yes the food isnt great and the place isnt the cleanest, but if a business is offering half the price of the market rate, i really dont think we get to complain. That is if you only come for the lunch deals.
Alex Tee
Not bad. Nice soup dishes. Wonton has a nice yummy prawn in it. Classic.
Alex Tjahjana
Their shop will definitely fool you, although their shop look a bit shabby, their food are yummy with generous portion and fairly priced. Their staff members also very friendly and helpful, though some of them understand chinese much better than english. Have hundreds of items in their menu though only small amount of photos of the dish are available; however, whatever you choose, more often than not you'll be satisfied.
Frank Lin
I love the atmosphere and their food. They have great price for their food before 7pm, yummy and good value.
Daniel Chow
Was looking for a affordable lunch in the 1hr break between lectures and saw Sunrise Cafe. Was recommended the chicken noodle soup that could be prepared quickly. Paid $5.80 and got the largest bowl of noodle soup I had seen! Highly recommend for affordable and delicious eats

The decor is a bit dated but the value of the food makes up for it entirely. If you have never had HK style french toast, then this is the place to try it! It definitely gives off a home cooked meal vibe that everyone can appreciate.

You can’t find any restaurants with such cheap prices and such big portions now. We always love their hot pot. Really good Cantonese restaurant.

After hearing about their cheap lunch specials, specifically their laksa, I’ve been keen to give this place a go. Their Chicken Laksa is $6.80!! Definitely the cheapest laksa I’ve had in Auckland. Serving size was decent and toppings were quite generous. (perhaps not comparable to other places but still really good for the given price point!) I’ll be back again if I’m ever craving laksa. We also ordered their hainan chicken rice. Pretty decent and yum too.

I say come in if you’re after a cheap lunch but other than that, it’s pretty ordinary; place is alike other HK styled cafes.

Authentic Cantonese restaurant located on Khyber Pass New Market. The interior is worn but moderately clean.

I ordered the Fish and Lettuce Congee, the Beef Mince Congee and the Beef Tongue. The Congees are in a massive portion. The Fish Congee was fresh with good amount of fish fillets. I didn’t like having mince in my congee so won’t comment on the Beef Congee.

This restaurant serves the best beef tongue! The beef is well marinated and the thicker slice cuttings makes the tongues quite chewy.

The dishes are served quickly in great big portions. Priced quite cheaply.

Nice and friendly staff. Once I left my bag at the restaurant and they ran and chased to tell me that.

If you are wanting a cheap and quick lunch or dinner. This is the place to go for.

Food: 8/10
Food presentation: 7/10
Service: 8.5/10
Ambience: 6/10
Value for money: 10/10

Price $15 per person

Food is good but service is terrible. We have been ordered fried chicken rice and soy chicken rice but wait for an hour. The waitress never apologized for the slow waiting time and their attitude were absolutely terrible. This is the worst restaurant I've been so far. You are warned!!!

Late lunch choice around newmarket, good place with good deal price, nice food and they even give a free drink along with the food when you ordered they lunch menu
Pig Cat
Great great great value for lunch and authentic Hongkong cafe taste. Most of lunch special dishes below $10 but also with good quality and generous portion! Add only $2 to get a decent milk tea! Must try milk tea. 100% authentic HongKong style milk tea. What do you want more from a fast dining eatery??
Natyo
Pros: cheap and tasty food... where else can you get a meal for under $10 in newmarket ? Taste is yummy and hits the spot, especially good if you come in a small group and order a few different things to share!

Cons: Dont come here for the decor or service! Nothing fancy but enough to get what you want and move on.
Cherry Lau
The pipi in the fiery soup with vermicelli brings a tiresome atmosphere to you and you feel like your going to die in a good way. This place isn’t fancy but the exceptional quality of the food which is reasonably priced just wouldn’t make you care, and I mean it. Be careful though as the food can be sweltering and scorchingly hot!
Zijun Liang
I ordered three dishes. However these two dishes in particular shown in the photos are not good enough to call themselves as HongKong or Cantonese dishes. As a Cantonese, I never ate something like these. For the eggplant with pork mince, the cook said they used vinegar and NZ eggplants to make this dishes. For the spicy beef, they used Sichuan pepper and some other spice, however it tasted like they only remembered to put in spices but not the salt. The cook might forget the basic thing! Salt! This restaurant has been open for 20years. However the dishes are worse and worse! The waitresses have the worst customer service!
Jenny Da
Really good lunch specials, the chicken laksa noodle soup is only $6.80! And the portion is really decent too. They have so many other options all under $10 and available before 7pm.

The restaurant doesn’t have the best decor, but very value for money.
Calosa Nema
WOW ! SO CHEAP SO GOOOD! Highly recommended! The wonton sou! And the meal on rice too! I cant believe we live in 2019 and still can get full tummy with only 8$ perperson. Wow
Grace
Ordered Wonton soup as takeaway. Pricewise good for lunch. They really busy for lunch time, as they have lunch special. You can see Prawn wrapped with pork mince :) Taste is not bad. As for lunch, it is a reasonable place to go.
Lovemelody
Really bad experience. No service. Waited more than 30mins for a lunch dish. They did not cook the dish untill another one ordered the same. Definitely won't visit again
Wendy Wang
Tried the lunch meal, it’s value of money. A good meal under 10 dollar. Flavour is fine for a quick lunch, and they serve you the dish really fast.
Rachel Hui
I enjoyed their bake rice variety the most, their lunch and drinks menu on the black board is value for money. The only improvement I’d suggest they make is staff attitude, a little smile goes a long ways
Gordon Geko
Ordered the beef rice noodles, baked chicken tomato rice (they ran out of pork chop) and a hot and sour soup.

We got tea served quickly but our table was used as the teapot stand, the waitress kept coming to our table to take the tea to serve others then putting it back on our table...not the best start but not the end of the world.

Hot and sour soup was drenched in pepper, basically inedible as all you taste is the overkill and after taste of pepper.

The beef rice noodles were decent but portion was fairly small, baken chicken tomato rice had a sweet and sour sauce instead of tomato.. very strange and there was no crisp to the chicken.

We didnt end up paying for the soup but the owner wouldn't even taste the soup and flat out rejected the notion that anything could be wrong with the product, and claimed we were stealing from her - very unfortunate as previous owners actually had standards and sadly this current operation only cares about cutting corners - no respect for food or the customer unfortunately.
Muhammad Dilawer Hayat
Waited 45 mins to receive something I did not order! and the taste was awful. Not to mention the serving lady attitude. Not recommended at all.
Rachel Liew
I went there for dinner by myself when it was around 6:30pm. However it was Friday and restaurant was packed. So I decided to have a takeaway to avoid waiting for a seat. I told the woman serving customers, who seemed like at least a manager or the owner. I prepared to order beef with black pepper and onion which indicates on the black board for$8.8 before 7pm. When she told me it was $9.3 I showed her the price on the board. She then replied it was already too cheap, implying I should not criticize about instant 50 cents price hike. And she went on saying $8.8 was for dinning at restaurant not for takeaway. So I said to her I decided to have dinner at her restaurant instead of takeaway. But she said not now, next time. I knew she simply tried to push me away.
Of course I was not short of 50 cents, but her attitude towards this matter had told more compelling facts about this restaurant.no integrity. I actually had been to this restaurant a few times because of its handy location. Wish them good luck in future.
Yixi Chen
I like this restaurant. I have been here many times. The 29 dollar hot pot is non spicy but very warm and delicious. The waitresses’ service are excellent. Definitely will come back again.

This place is shocking. How is it still in business? The waiter had no idea what we ordered and after chasing up our order at least five times, we waited close to an hour for a bowl of beef noodles which tasted so bad I couldn't eat them. The beef was hard and chewy, the noodles bland. The dumplings were the worst I've had. The skin was doughy and all that was in there was some pink stuff that may have been pork and some corn. The free coke was flat and none of us drank it. The service was also shocking and incredibly rude. Hygiene is questionable. The owner refused to give a refund. Sure the prices are cheap but as far as I'm concerned the food here isn't worth paying a cent for. I'd rather go hungry.

In case any of yous may or may not notice Newmarket hub is a little quieter at the moment as the main shopping complex is now closed for a refit for the next x months so visitors will have to do with strip eateries such as sunrise cafe located at downtown newmarket and is next to other popular eateries like sun world, selera, ichiban etc.
If you gonna eat here bring a Chinese mate along to translate n order (and shout you) as this place is more authentic than the fusion/western version seen at your local take out. Even Diners and Staff are like they are eating/working in a village cafe back their homeland.Had a good deal here too, they just charge me $6.50 for a hearty noodle soup, Haha again i'm a good diner again yeeah.

Yummy deep fried pork intestines!

The noodles were nice, and spicy combination fried rice was good too. I even ate the left over cold next day and was happy about it.

Nothing too amazing just good satisfying Chinese food.

Service: 4/5
Food Quality: 3.5/5
Food Quantity: 3.5/5
Environment: 3.5/5
Presentation: 3/5
Price per person: $30-$35

Came in for lunch last year with my family.
Ordered wonton noodles, milk tea, and the ox brisket and rice roll. Ox brisket and rice rolls were always my favourite lunch choice. The rice rolls soaked up the sauce and tasted delicious. Milk tea also tasted very nice and had the perfect ratio of milk and tea. I also recommend the chicken congee as it is something I order often for lunch.
CrazyCatLady_EmmaC
Love their lunch special, not too big portion and add $1 for a drink (from a selection) also recommend their baked rice/spaghetti very tasty.
I'm A Foodie
I have been here many times. I like their hotpot, ox brisket & rice roll and Hongkong style tea with milk. The ox brisket & rice roll is only $5.8 before 7 pm that is cheap and yummy. The hot pot provides good nutrition as well as good flavor. You can choose ten sidedishes putting in the hotpot which are only $29.
I ordered other dishes before, I don't like them.
Jeffie
Late night feed, just came in for the beef and fish ball with seaweed soup. It's not bad, I would come back again. Service and ambience seems below average but it's just Asian standard it makes me feel like I'm back in Hong Kong/China.
Ting313
I will never go back to this place or recommend it to anyone. The service cannot be worse, and they know they are rude and they don't care, hygiene and taste also not up to standard.
Angie Li
The food doesn't taste very good plus there was a extra long waiting time for one of the dishes. We asked the waiting staff multiple times and the only response we got back was it was coming. The service was terrible and none of the staff there were friendly. I think I will never want to go back to that place and I would never recommend it to anyone. It was a really awful place to go for meal.
Ashleigh Michelle
We arrived quite late in the evening so I wasn't expecting great service. The lady serving us was friendly enough and helped us through the menu. The dishes (especially rice dishes) are inexpensive and were tasty. The food was decent, I do prefer other restaurants on Dominion Road though. The free tea was very diluted and not very nice to drink, and the tea that we paid for came out warm when they were supposed to be cold. I would go back here as the food is fine and menu really large, but only if all other places were closed.

This place has been around for as long as i can remember, been there several times over the years and had always been quite enjoyable. Returned there recently after 5 years and I left without eating in anger. First of all, this is suppose to be a HongKong cafe, you know it's not a good sign when you walked in and no one speaks Cantonese. Secondary, the main woman assumed I would speak Mandarine because I look Asian. Even after several attempts to try to talk to her in English, she still didn't get it.

Finally, we started to place our order. When my husband tried to placed his order, the same woman turned to me as she couldn't understand what my husband says (he's caucasian). I repeated the order in English pointing to the menu. Yet still trying to talk to me in Mandarine. It's such a mission to place our orders as she doesn't even know what's on the menu. Running a HK style cafe but not knowing the most classic HK dishes. While we're still ordering, another staff called her at the counter. She just abruptly walked away while we were still talking.

We waited patiently for her to finish her business and return to us. Once again, trying to repeat our order but not knowing what our dishes were. A moment later, she returned and pointed at one of our order and just stared at us. We thought she was trying to confirm the order again, we said yes. She then said "No". So this "Yes" "No" exchange went on several times until she moved her finger down to the next dish. Finally she said "Your order NO, gone. this one?".

By then we're completely fed up. I told her to cancelled the whole order and we're leaving. She acted in shock and annoyed, but keep saying "but just one order". I proceed to stand up and leave, she was standing in the way trying to block us from leaving. I had to raise my voice and said: "Excuse me, we're leaving now." Still trying to tell us something in Mandarin!!

The place looks filthy and smells odd when we walked in, don't get me wrong I'm very tolerant of standards of restaurants. But this one? I'm glad I didn't stay. It's a great disappointment knowing that another good HK style cafe had turned to Shxx! Don't bother coming!!
Very slow service, forgotten 3 meals. If service improved might come back. Daughter's meal should of arrived first, service was that slow. Needs entertainment for the young children.

We found a pretty awesome #Asian restaurant in #Newmarket... It's on the side of the road but very easy to miss. Nothing extravagant about the decor but we can vouch for a fulfilling meal in large portions that's easy on the pocket...
Must try: Seafood Laksa $9 (pictured)
Skip: Yuba salad $4.80

Came here for lunch again today. Generous portions and very flavoursome. The dumplings were nicely made with a delicious filling of pork, cabbage and sweet corn.

Really really cheap and affordable.
They have lunch time specials between $6-$10
Food is decent and exceptionally affordable. They have a wide range of dishes to choose from.

Service is quick. You should order at the counter and then take a seat if there is only a few of you, especially when there is a lot of people. Otherwise you will be waiting for a long time to be served.
Shuyn Herng
Decided to have lunch here as the previous visit gave me a good impression.

I ordered the clay pot black bean and fish with rice which is only $8.80 on the special lunch menu that also comes with a complimentary drink (Coke, without ice). Service is ok with 2 - 3 staff on the ground attend to customer needs. The place here is pay first and serve later.

I remember during the last visit, the dish was much better. However, this was not the case this time. The appearance of the dish was quite good. However, it lacks some taste, the black bean taste. This time, the black bean was lesser in amount. Hence unable to highlight the taste. Overall the dish is ok despite is a bit oily.

Budget and fast are the main attraction of this place. Food is mediocre but able to fill you without breaking a hole in your wallet. This place is among the most budget compared to nearby eateries.

Would be back for budget beef noodle.
James Carpenter
I've been here a couple of times now. Its an authentic little Hong Kong style cafe that does amazing value lunch deals starting at 3.80 with a glass of coke. I grabbed the crispy chicken, which was a full quarter chicken double cooked. I assume first it was boiled or roasted, then the skin crisped up and fried with garlic until super crispy and brushed with salt for an amazing savoury salty flavour. Served with rice and a garlic, ginger and spring onion oil, which is also salty and flavoursome just to go with the rice. All this comes with a coke for 8.80. I cant vouch for all their dishes, but its a great value place for a quick lunch. The staff were quick and friendly.
Patrick Tong
Came here several times for great cheap eat. Food came out quite fast. Quite cheap compared to other restaurants. Although the decor is not 5 star but food is freshly cooked and hot. Would come back again.
I'm Hungry
Been here a couple times. Do recommend for very cheap lunch meals in New market. Food is decent, very good service and always find seating but the quality of food isn't very great. They have a very good lunch menu which is rock bottom prices for the neighborhood. You get a full lunch for less than $8 uptill 7 pm.
David
Too bad! There is a long worm in the Tofu and vegetable stir fried! The owner keep saying it is normal and instead of a "sorry" the only thing on her mind is that we must pay the rest of the dishes with a very rude attitude.
John Cogswell
Hello Jafa's and pretend Jafa visitors ! I am from Canada. My wife and I had 2 meals in this place last week, while visiting Auckland. We had Hong Kong style soup dishes. It is authentic. Wow, good broth, good meats, the value and service, Choice !
Dessert_W
Food is average but service is poor. There was a bug in the noodle but they refuse to admit it's a bug. They said it's a shrimp that's part of the soup. Extremely disappointed and disgusted with their respond and attitude. Never come back to this shitty place again.
Christina
Came here for the first time a while back for lunch. It's a little restaurant/cafe that's in a busy khyber pass area.
Decided to try this place and was not disappointed. I should first point out that, when most of their dishes are $6 and under then you gotta be realistic especially when you'd be expected to pay at least $10-20 for lunch at other eateries nearby in Newmarket.
There's no fancy decor, the chairs are basic but comfortable and chances are some of their dishes will have been preprepared/precooked to ensure quick service. However that's not a bad thing, particularly when you consider that a lot of eateries do the same thing, but charge more.
I ordered beef brisket with rice rolls for $5.80. Their meals come with a free glass of coke but I opted for iced lemon tea instead for $1.
For all dishes they also provide a small side dish of peanuts and hot tea. My food arrived in about 5 mins and came in a sizzling hot porcelain bowl.
Portion size was good for the price and I left feeling satisfied. Some places tend to cheapen out on portion size in order to charge less but this dish had decent amount of meat in it.
Overall I'd definitely return and try other dishes on their menu- for $7 for meal and drink you really can't go wrong.

As a regular, I've gone on to try another one of their dishes, soy chicken on rice for $7.80. I was impressed the first time I had it, as it was a generous portion size as they use half a small chicken. However, the second and the third and final time the chicken portion size had become much smaller, this was despite me asking why their portion sizes had decreased and they insisted it hadn't even though the difference was big enough to be obvious. I felt like I had been cheated, so will no longer be returning.
Heidi Chapman
Not a bad place. I love coming here for a sizzling beef or a soya chicken, however I was pretty disappointed when I ordered some dumplings to find that they were frozen dumplings that one can get from the supermarket. I'm still coming back just don't order the dumplings
Craig Knox Lee
I love this place, you can't say food is the best, but the price is unbeatable. Under $6 you can have a noodle soup with a drink which is good.
James
Have been coming here after soccer for dinner with team mates since early 2000 ... The restaurant has been around for a long time - changed owners over the years I think but the food is still good very consistent ...

Very Authentic Hong Kong style food - good prices and always provide a complimentary soup.

Good location, one of the best beef brisket noodle soups in Auckland

Have had many memories and lemon teas here.
Nix
Used to come here a lot, at first it was a great bargain. Free peanuts, beef rice noodles & a lemon tea for under $6, returned several times after that but service got very slack, free peanuts were stopped and took over 45 minutes to get my drink in which it never came despite asking serval times for it, ended up just walking out. I never returned after that but my husband decided to give it one last chance, cheap food comes with a price... Food poisoning! Do not have the black bean fish or you will spend the next day vomiting.
Daniel Power
Sunrise is a great cheap eat, so don't expect anything fancy. They have some pretty good lunch specials that run till 7pm. Highly recommend the roast chicken on rice super or beef brisket.

Had dinner there last night and ordered:
Prawn with tofu on glass noodle: 4/5 delicious garlic sauce, tofu a little hard around the corners
Steamed blue cod: 3.5/5 great looking fish. Flesh was slightly firm
Free-range chicken: 3.5/5 tasty sauce but not a lot of meat

Decor/ambience: 2.5/5 very basic
Service: 4/5 friendly staff
Value: 4.5/5 great (total bill was $59 so $15pp including seafood)
Taste: 4/5 taste was good
Overall: 4/5 this place wins on taste and value. There is certainly room for improvement but for the price and location, it's hard to beat. Don't forget the really well priced lunch specials as cheap as ~$5!!
PancakePanda
Free soup starter was very average, tasted more like carrots than bone soup- the typical kind you get from Hong Kong eateries. Free peanuts side-dish was appreciated, but did not touch it as it made me wonder what happened to the uneaten peanuts that people end up not finishing yet have come into contact with their bare hands....

Food came out TOO FAST- less than 5 minutes after ordering, it made you wonder if it was cooked on the spot by a proper chef? Firstly the rice was $1.00, reasonable normal Hong Kong eatery price, but unfortunately the rice was dry, cold and so obviously not fresh. The honey and black pepper beef dish was obviously using the typical Chinese baking-soda treated meat. Very soft, yet tasteless. The honey-soy sauce was a poor attempt to cover the low quality of over-tenderised meat. Very few pieces of capsicum, mainly onion mixed in with the meat and strangely enough the black pepper was missing.

Second dish ordered was the combination seafood hotpot with tofu, decided to not cheapen out, at $18.80 this was abysmal for what was presented; quite a lot of surumi pieces (bulk of the dish), a few frozen prawns, some halved frozen fish balls, few pieces of deep fried oil tofu, five cockles and 5 pieces of fish... all swimming in some soy-sauce MSG laden mixture. Overall quite salty and heavy handed with the MSG.

Tea was diluted, didn't taste any hint of good tea leaf in there. I really wanted water, but decided to just leave as I couldn't believe that I had just forked out $40 dollars for this meal. Absolutely the worst Hong Kong eatery I have been to, the Canton Seafood Restaurant across the road is miles better.

Left this place with extreme thirst, still feeling hungry and a numb mouth due to the over-usage of MSG.

TLDR; if you are on a tight budget this place is okay to stomach for the rice/noodle dishes- you get what you pay for. But do not order the more expensive dishes i.e. anything over $14, cheap ingredients, no cooking skills involved, overloaded with MSG.
Calvin
This isn't the flashiest place, but it definitely has very competitive prices. It's a good place for Hong Kong cafe style dishes. If you're in New Market but on a budget, this is the place to go - the lunch sets are under 8 bucks, with drinks. Obviously the portions aren't huge but enough still filling. Going to be a great place for students when the new university campus opens.
Cheap Cheap Foodie
Time and date: whenever i need a cheap feed

Food ordered: tried most of the foods on the menu, the lunch special seems like a good choice for a feed

Taste: simple homecook flavor

Food comments: good portion, servecomplementaty salted peanuts, the hongkong style drinks there are quite nice

Service: average friendly

Environment: Clean and tidy , but definately not the fanciest place

Cost : $15 pp on average

Will I return : definitely

Have been here several times, and this time I ordered something light off the lunch special that comes with a drink in which I chose cold lemon tea. Now I normally don't like bits of lemon in it so if I come across chewing on something of this drink I will take it out in which I chewed on was a fly, the rating here is A but there's dead fly in your cold drinks... waitress didn't seem to care when I showed her the chewed dead fly, not impressed.
FlyingMonkey
You can expect authentic hongkongness food here. I come here often in winter for their hot pot. The price of the dishes are all very reasonable.
Doug Funnie
Love this place! Amazing congee, and they do a hot lemon and coke for when you got the sickness. Also love that they have club sandwiches and cold milo on the menu. Definitely get the congee when you come here, any flavour is good!
NYNB
Dinky Chinese/Vietnamese restaurant that claims to serve the best of Chinese and Vietnamese food. Their food is very Hong Kong based and their menu is a little overwhelming with many different choices.

I came here on two different days , yesterday and today. I'm not too fond of the service as I find it sometimes rude and unwelcoming. I wasn't greeted when my friends and I came into today and had to grab the menus and a seat myself, compared to yesterday where I was greeted and given menus straight away even though it was busier. I also find it a bit confusing why we were given free soup one day and the next day it wasn't offered yet, other customers that came in after us were given it .

The food is average, some a little bit more tasty than others eg. mapo tofu was very good and I highly recommend, the triple stir fried pork and cabbage was horrible, sizzling beef was apparently good, the cripsy chicken was cold, the baked dish with beef mince with tomato sauce and fried rice was filling, but very oily.
Theresa Chan
Love this place!

I'm a regular. I eat here with my family, friends and sometimes by myself. It has so many choices whether you want a full meal, lunch combo, light supper or just coffee.

On top of that, they have the very best value around. A lunch combo would be around just $6.80 including a rice dish and lemon drink.

They also open till 11pm daily.
