Review Neighbour's Restaurant - Auckland Central

The menu isn't too big but it does have the interesting Taiwanese items like the fermented tofu. Most of their main dishes on rice came as a set with side dishes and soup. They also have a range of different noodles. I grabbed the Taiwanese sausage on rice and that was quite nice. The deep fried combination was also quite nice, as was the combination pancake with egg.

Wholesome eats-taste of home if you’re looking for something simple and nostalgic. Some rice set dishes even come with little sides and the best is the scrambled egg and tomato-most sentimental iconic dish of childhood is it not?? Iykyk. Yum broth full of flavour, decent portions, fair prices, clean and cosy eating setup and kind staff. Been last year and this year-consistency is there. Nothing fancy but they do a simple meal well.

Decent Asian restaurant in Meadowlands. Most of customers preferred to take away - could have been the hour (around 5PM)

Great place for a tasty quick meal. Their fried squid is one of the best!

Authentic Taiwanese cuisine. I've been coming here for many years and the food is consistently great tasting. Sides dishes are a must and if you are game, try the "Smelly tofu". Choose from a variety of noodle or rice dishes and they also do Bubble tea, which is ok

Very nice Taiwanese dishes. Portion is big and their special made chili paste is amazing. I love the 鹹酥雞塊飯。😋

Love this place as always. It's been almost five years since I visited its previous city branch. The one in East Auckland still serves high quality food. Very flavourful braised pork trotters, and juicy chicken bites. Best place to go for some hearty Taiwanese food.

When my family and I have any chance to come over the Botany area, we always try to dine with neighbours' cafe. Surprisingly they are not open to dine in under red traffic light system. Ordered the famous beef noodle soup. Hopefully we can dine in soon to enjoy our meals next time.
Richard
Genuine beef noodle soup. Decent portions and good value for money. Stinky tofu OK, but not really stinky enough. My younger daughter's love pork and chicken cutlets. Nice chewy noodles. Will be back.👍

Love every dishes on the menu! Lovely new renovation with brand new cutleries. Best Taiwanese 🇹🇼 dishes around proven by time. Quality had moved up another level after the renovation. Highly recommend it for lunch date with yourself to small family dinner!

The beef noodle and the crispy chicken were definitely the stars of the menu. The beef was very tender, the broth not too salty either. Quick turnaround and yummy food.

Super delicious food with a good serving size. Good price too as around $35 feeds two of us and gets us very full for dinner!
Rae Padd
Very yummy food. Just sharing some clearer versions of the menu😂

Great cheap eats in Auckland. Great portions and good flavour. The best part about this restaurant is how clean and bright everything feels.

Decent - can't say much about the service as I came around 3pm where it was after lunch and way before dinner so I was pretty much the only customer. The food is decent and quantity is above average though the price is a bit on the higher side. I paid 24 dollars for all of this.

Nice food reliable as ever. one of our go to place for Taiwanese food
Wyns Yu
Nice food for it's price. Little crowded. But overall highly recommended.

Updated decour, same good service. Most importantly of all very very tasty food. Now with added milk tea options! Our go to place, which we visit almlst fortnightly.

The beef noodle soup is too salty and full of the taste of soy sauce. The price "17 dollars" is too expensive for the meal. The service is not good, I have waited 5 mins to order the dish while the restaurant is not busy, the staffs are just keep talking in the kitchen. Don't think I will come again.

Not bad, but used to be better. The beef noodle was too salty. The crispy garlic chicken was not bad. Portion for the rice meal was bigger than the noodle. There was a free self serving hot tea available. Food was around 15$.
Arianaaa
Huge portions and really affordable prices! They have really amazing brown sugar bubble tea as well 💓 the best in Auckland!!! They are currently having a promotion of 50% off 2nd cup of bbt ☺️

The pricing is alright for the food quality. Lots of classic Taiwanese classic dishes. The Taiwanese sausage is delicious and quite different from your normal western styler sausage. Less salty and more on the sweeter side.

The chicken cutlet was fine, the outside was crunchy and inside was decently juicy. The meal sets also come with a variety of sides which is nice to get a mixture of veggies long with the meat.

Service: 3/5
Food: 3.5/5
Price: 3/5
Atmosphere: 3.5/5
Portion: 4/5

My family and I have been visiting this restaurant for years. Delicious taiwanese cuisine. I always enjoy eating their food, especially the garlic chicken fillet with rice. The dumplings are also delicious with its dipping sauce. Price is not too cheap, i’ll still go back anytime. They recently re-decorated and the place definitely looks much cooler! Well recommended.

I have been wanting to try this place out since they have the pork chop and minced pork rice I want to try. Kind of disappointed since the minced pork rice was okay. It didnt have much flavour and just full of herbal taste. The pork chop was good though. I also got some fried squid but it was so tough that it was hard to chew. Will give this place another try and see.

The food was ok nothing really special, but the serving was huge and good for two already. Servers cannot speak nor understand english so we had a hard time ordering, the space is small aswell.

This is one of our favourite Taiwanese cafe in this area. They use very fresh ingredients and generous portion. They have just changed their interior design and plate presentation and it looks better than before. Will definitely go back again

Chicken cutlet meal :4/5
Very generous portions and the minced meant that comes on the rice is so good!
Their milk tea is also really yummy!!

This is one of our local go-to places. The food is always consistent every time we go, both in taste and portion size. Lots of different options to choose from and good value for money. We usually get the beef noodles with wontons (our fave!), the chicken fillet with garlic, or a side dish, and the food doesn't take too long to come out so the wait time is decent. Neighbours never disappoints us! Highly recommend it 👍

Delicious food and great value for money.
Crispy chicken on rice, fried pork chop on rice, beef stew on rice, and fried squid were delicious and hard to fault. 3 or 4 different items on the plate which is hard to come by these days and a soup on the side. Wow. Home cooked type of foods and portion sizes are reasonably large.
Staff are really friendly, service was good and wait till was minimal.
Look forward to next time And trying more off the menu.

This is not the first time we have been to this restaurant but I forgot to write the review then and have actually forgotten that the food served here was actually quite nice. My husband has deep fried chicken chop with rice and it came with some pickled vegetables, pork mince on top of the rice and with fried vermicelli. This is also served with a bowl of soup. I had a bowl of fish ball and pork ball noodle soup. Both dishes are very tasty and I have to remember to drop by more often!

Been there so many times. Food taste real good and definitely fill me up. Service is ok but it's a bit annoying when you have to get spoon or fork yourself.

Always great food and reasonable price, good portions, staff are always friendly, good variety of choices
Worth coming back
Great choice for a Taiwanese style

My go to place in Meadowlands for a tasty, quick meal. Great tasting beef noodles at a great price. Noodles are chewy, beef is tender and soup is rich in flavour. If you don't like the beef you can have dumplings or wontons in place of the beef.
Restuarant was very busy but food is still served quickly. We waited 10-15 mins.

Food: 4/5
Service: 3/5, cutlery and tea are self service
Environment: 4/5
Would I come here again? Definitely
Bang for buck: Yes

Neighbour's is a great choice for those who are after authentic and hearty Taiwanese food. It may come across as a bit on the pricey side with mains going from $13-14 each, but for what you get I'd say it's definitely worth it.

Food
Rice dishes are a treat to order at Neighbour's because of all the tasty sides they come with - two lots of stir-fried vegetables (usually cabbage and beans or cucumber), an alternative protein (scrambled egg or tofu) and seasoned minced meat which tops the rice.

My personal favorite is Chicken Fillet with Garlic Flavor because it is deep-fried but more importantly, boneless. The other rice dishes I've tried such as Crispy Pork Chop and Bean Curd (tofu) were decent too. While I found these all to be perfectly adequate, I must also admit that when it comes to flavors, none of these dishes are going to blow your mind and the quality of the frying could be further improved.

The Pork & Chives Dumplings can be ordered as a side or as a main (with noodle soup). They possessed the two key qualities which in my opinion form the foundation to a great dumpling which are sufficient filling and great flavor.

Most recently, I ordered the Simmering Beef Noodle Soup. The beef is slow cooked and fairly tender, though not quite 'melt-in-your-mouth tender'. The soup is very unique as it contains elements of soy and tea. I thought it was a fine dish and I finished my bowl but it's not something I would order again.

The homemade chili sauce, though not a menu item, is also worthy of praise. It is complementary to each table and tastes amazing! It does not have that slight sour taste chili sauces sometimes do and it pairs well with just about everything on the menu - from the rice and sides to the noodles and soups. For those interested, it can also be purchased separately at the counter for use at home.

Service & Ambiance
In the multiple visits I've made, I found the staff to always be friendly and accommodating. One thing to keep in mind though is that Neighbour's is a self service restaurant but accessing utensils and other culinary bells and whistles is a non-issue.

Ambiance-wise there isn't anything particularly special about Neighbour's. It can get quite busy but it doesn't feel too cramped even when it is full, which is a definite plus.

Overall
To me, the whole appeal of Taiwanese food is that in a way it feels like a special home cooked meal. The beauty isn't in its sophistication but rather the modest variety and flavors. Neighbour's does a great job in capturing this sentiment and for that very reason, it's a restaurant I'd recommend to anyone in the mood for a simple but tasty meal and one I myself will return to every once in a while.

Recommendations: Chicken Fillet with Garlic Flavor on Rice, Pork & Chives Dumplings

Neighbour's Restaurant is tidy and clean but otherwise very small, often there are not enough room to sit comfortably while dining.

The staff is friendly and the Taiwanese food is very authentic, but way too overpriced.

We decided to come here for lunch the other day and got the dumplings, wonton and beef noodle soup and the black pepper squid.

I loved the squid. Seasoned perfectly and well cooked. The only negative I would say is that they're not as crispy as they looked. The dumplings had good flavours but we're pretty average. Had better. My partner didn't really like the wonton and beef noodle soup though.

Not a bad place to dine, but not a standout in Meadowlands for me.

Great little Taiwanese place. We visit here often. Nice ambiance and friendly staff. Love their Taiwanese style sausage, with lovely side dishes. Also good value for money.
Benedict Uy
Nice place for a quick lunch. They serve many types of Taiwanese style dishes with rice or noodles. Although there is a waitress to take your orders, it is a self serve restaurant (Get your own cutlery and drinks). It is one of the few places that serve smelly tofu.

The closest place to provide decent Taiwanese food.

My family/friends have been eating here ever since they've opened and have pretty much tried most of the products on their menu! (I go so often their frontline staff have remembered me and knows what I like to order haha) :D
Decent friendly service, food is quick to serve.
Entres and mains: never fails to disappoint, though not 100% like authentic Taiwanese food, but this is veeerrrry close! and the closest in Auckland!
Drinks: if you sign up to their vip/membership thing you can get the tapioca drinks for $3.5 instead of $5 :D Though the drinks are not as awesome as Gong Cha, but to be very honest, for that price, i wouldn't care :D

Ahhhh, I have some beautiful memories here. I've been here a good twenty times in the past. My mum used to drag me with her to Howick when she was teaching a student that lived in the area. We would have some delicious meals here with my favourite being the wonton noodle soup. I'd always ask for extra bean sprouts. The dishes from Neighbour's Restaurant warm you from the inside out. If you're looking for a fancy Asian restaurant, then I wouldn't bother coming here. But if you're looking for an honest, home-cooked, Taiwanese style meal then definitely give this place a try. Their milk teas are pretty decent as well! I'd also recommend their side dish of cucumber..... It's cold and seasoned to perfection. The crunch is incredibly addictive. I used to go through 2 or 3 of these side dishes in one sitting.

This is our family all time favorite restaurant. We come at least once a month. The salt and pepper chicken 鸡扒面 is our favorite. Another recommended dish is the 综合蛋饼is also highly recommended.

Neighbour's Restaurant is a definite go-to for my family for a good meal with huge portion sizes and fast service. The service is decent as most have limited English, but my family and I have come here for years with very few, probably no disappointments at all. Neighbour's has particularly good noodles in comparison to other Taiwanese restaurants I've been to, with a good beef soup and seasoning soup noodles.

My particular favourite is the noodle with dried beancurd sauce (no. 16 on the menu), I order it probably 85% of the time, but any of their rice dishes are also fantastic, especially the chicken garlic fillet or the pork fillet, and the portions are so big I rarely finish one off on my own. The side dishes are also great. The dumplings have a very good dipping sauce.

Definitely recommend for good, cheap, fast food. Even better if you're a member - the smartest thing is that your membership number is your phone number, which means you never forget it and the whole family can use it at once - $10 off with every $150 spent means a solid free meal every few times we go.

This is a small eatery which serves typical Taiwaness food and milk tea. I ordered some small dishes rather than any main meals as we were not keen. The combination of egg pancake consisted of egg, bacon, sweet corns and meat fluff, which was surprisely delishous. I used to make Taiwaness pancake at home, but I have to say their version of adding three more ingredients was more clever. I've added this one to my own breakfast plans, will make this type of pancake myself.

I find their shaved ice dessert a bit let down. I ordered red bean, black jelly and pudding all three things together to go with the ice dessert. They were only hidden under the huge chunk of ice, which both barely have any flavour at all,not to mention the poor portion of beans and jelly.

overral,if you were after a quick and cheap Taiwan style meal, the Neighbour's Restaurant would be a good choice.

Great place for eat outs, typical taiwanese food, but i love it still very much. Has the cheapest milk tea ive found, a huge plus for me. Great food.

Neighbour's cafe is typical taiwan food style in east auckland, also has a store in city. I like taiwan food as it gives you lots of different combination of food and drink, so we usually order take away or has lunch in neighbour's cafe. The beef noodle from taiwan is very famous ,so you can try next time, I usually order the beef noodle and the ice shake tea, one is hot, one is cold ;D The space is not big but very clean tidy, they offer so many different noodle and rice combination, good spot for take-away or just a quick dinner with friends.
