Review Kai Eatery Container Store - Auckland Central

Max Stanton
Fried chicken spot run out of a permanent shipping container. There are always people but the wait is never long, staff is nice and cheerful, prices are accessible for most. XL style fried chicken was great, had an almost cinnamon flavor, super juicy with good exterior crunch. The pork and chicken bao were also really good. Didn't try any of the teas but many people were getting them. Highly recommended, near many of the universities, fast and easy, not expensive.

A good place for some lunch takeaway/ afternoon snacks with heaps of options. The Chicken Bites were flavoursome and super crispy. The Kumara fries were yummmm, well fried and coated with sugar. Pork prawn and chive dumplings were juicy and tasty. Overall happy with everything ordered. The wait wasn’t too bad and staff was alright.

Awesome drink and food, authentic Taiwanese style, especially deep fried chicken fillet. Amazing.. Similar ones you buy in Sydney Asian eateries. Try it out. The only down side of this pop up Eatery is that there is a bit of wait during peak hours but nothing undercover, so cen be windy and cold if its not a sunny day.

I came by and got some takeaway. I had a bubble tea as well as the bento meal. I quite like their fried chicken. Nice flavours and really crispy. I wasn't a big fan of the pork belly since it was a bit dry. The food did have to travel a bit so that might have affected the quality. It is a nice place to grab some food and/or drinks.

For some reason held back from going here despite walking past it almost every day which I regret. The wait took awhile despite it being at off peak hours but it’s definitely worth the wait. I had a go at tasting the chicken bites deluxe and the 101 Bao bun. Both were incredibly tasty and well-priced. For the chicken bites I highly suggest pairing it with Peri peri as it added a small hit of spice at the end which made it extra savoury 😋. The bao bun was okay and the pork belly itself that was put inside was pretty dry from my experience. I would still suggest giving Kai eatery a try at least once or twice if you happen to walk past! I’m keen on returning again on the walk back to uni 👍

Had the Korean sweet chilli flavoured wings, they are CRISPY and super saucy. The guy was super generous with the portions. Amazing! Would highly recommend.

The chicken bites were juicy, and right heat. That’s the fried chicken which I love. The traditional Taiwanese fried chicken is my favorite.
Kate T
Service was quick and straightforward. The XL Chicken flavours were tasty and perfectly spicy for me. I give it a 4 because the chicken was crispy on top but bit soggy on the other side due to oil not being dripped off the chicken completely.

For the record, this review is mostly entirely based on their sweet potato fries (for now; I’ll definitely be returning to try out the entire menu🤤) - but these fries? The best I’ve ever tasted in Auckland and I’ve tried a lottttttt of sweet potato fries here. They were soft and fluffy on the inside, but crisp and crunchy on the outside and they were seasoned in such a way that angels were singing overhead in that the seasoning and batter went so so perfectly with the sweetness of the potatoes and just wow wow wow, 15/10 for the fries alone. My friend had never tried bubble tea before so played it safe with the mango smoothie; I like the container that they put it in but it was icy, and watery milky, and probably wasn’t a good idea for the bipolar weather in CBD today. Probably would never get that again. Also just wish they gave more fries bc I’m a hungus and your girl likes to eat😩 I know some people (like me) don’t care about meh service bc I know how rough the service industry is, and most places only care about just the food being good anyway, but service was also super cute so yay!
Dana Young
It’s a solid 4.5 stars. The chicken bites delux was delicious and portion was generous. Lost 0.5 stars because of the service ... I understood they were busy, but service still lacked a little. I also had to pay the paywave surcharge because they only place the machine behind the window for covid purposes I think ? It’s not the cheapest street food either but overall decent Taiwanese food.

The food stand offers incredibly delicious food that one could enjoy day after day without getting tired of it. Their fried chicken, in particular, stands out as a delightful departure from what you'd find in other establishments, even in comparison to popular chains like K*C. That said, it's worth noting that their original beverages fall short in comparison to the excellence of their food offerings.

First discovered this at the night markets, then found a store here! I really like the flavoring of the chef's special, and now they serve their tea in bottles too! So good ~

If you want authentic Taiwanese XL chicken, go elsewhere! If you want a good meal overall, this is a solid choice. My girlfriend and I enjoyed our xl chicken, bao, and kumara fries. We got spicy seasoning on the xl, it was tasty and the batter was five spicey, which I liked but my gf prefered the traditional spicy mix without the five spice, found on other xl chickens. Also, the The last/first time I had xl chicken was in Toronto at the Taiwanese chain hotstar and it was easily twice the size and not as expensive, which is a little bit of a let down. The kumara fries were amazing though; the coating was so crunchy with a dusting of something sweet like powdered sugar. Totally worth it I think, and you get quite a few, good to share with something else or enough for a someones snack. Got the hei hei Bao, the chicken was really crunchy and the Bao was really nice. My only complaint with it is the lack of sauce; it wasn't the most flavourful siracha mayo I've ever had, and there was hardly enough to taste it at all. Also had two super thin cucumber slices on it that were laughable.

Absolutely what this area needed. I couldn't have been happier when I received my order, the customer service was excellent and the food was delightful. My friend couldn't stop dancing when she was eating the kumara fries! Would definitely recommend
Adam Benkö
Awesome service matched with amazing food! Thank you! I'd recommend trying the XL Chicken!
Angelo Harema
Excellent service at the pakuranga night markets. Wish I brought the whole stall out such a great vibe and the baos are amazing will be back to spend a pay check on this place
Selphie XD
Their XL fried chicken and kumara chips were to die for. Crunchy, juicy, meaty... time for another.
Jackie Wang
I have been missing Taiwan's crispy chicken for a very long time, until I tried Bits and Crumbs juicy and tender spicy crispy chicken! Thank you for bringing Taiwan to New Zealand! I recommend to all who wants to try, go early to the night market to try them out, these freshly fried crispy chicken sell out real fast!
Hans Pronk
Such a good place for chefs special fried chicken and them kumara chips are amazing! 6 stars if I could!
Nadine Christmas
Chefs special is arguably the best fried chicken in Auckland. 🔥
Lydia Healy
The chicken was sooo tender, love it. And the eating box was a cool design too, I finished it on the walk home. Thanks!
Sophia Tsay
So delicious 😋 Will definitely go again and again and again...
Kirk Smith
Ordered chicken on rice thorough Uber Eats. Was bloooooooody good.
Connie Chu
非常好吃!皮脆肉嫩!份量十足!在這就可以吃到超乎水準的雞排,不再想念台灣的雞排了😆😄
Wulan Prawito
Tried the fried chicken and it's huge and delicious !
Byron Ford
Just ate a Bao from there, everything was great right down to the packaging it came in. Wish I had bought more.
Rong Shi
The juiciest fried chicken u will ever find in AKL. You will be craving for this.
Samuel Yao
uni might be killing me on the inside but at least I will always have XL chicken to look forward to
Eleanor Tana
Best onion rings!!! Love coming here during my uni breaks with my friends :)
Serena L
Milk tea: looks funny, taste funny and sour, obviously deteriorated....not drinkable. Asked 25% ice and there’s no ice at all.
Rice bowl: asked no carrot, edamame, ginger. And they are still in the bowl....
What a horrible place for takeaway
Persian Foodie
ONLY GET THE FRIED CHICKEN. EVERYTHING ELSE IS AVERAGE. Got the original fried chicken pieces which were succulent, crispy on the outside but still moist on the inside and coated with chicken salt and spices. The onion rings were very oily and coated in batter with a similar consistency to a spring roll so bits broke everytime I took a bite. The tumeric flavor was nice on its coating. The drinks were NOT great. Got the egg flavored pudding milk tea with pearls. Such a tiny amount of pearls, was unsweetened (I couldn’t adjust the sugar levels) and the milk tea was so watered down, worst milk tea I’ve had yet I paid $7.50 for it... Their specialized drinks on the board looked colorful but were very icy and had little flavor. Got the strawberry and mango one for $8. The bottle was cool though. Good snack food only for the fried chicken but on the pricier side
Ekam Panesar
Delicious chicken, very nice front of house staff

Decided to try this out after seeing people raving about this place, also, I love food trucks. Ordered the fried chicken and couldn't go beyond a couple bites. The seasoning was quite unpleasant to my taste as it was almost sweet and overloaded with MSG.
Ta Shi
The restaurant has its signature orange board so it isn't hard to find. The taipei bao was really good, bao was fresh and the pork belly was really tender. Could have been a bigger piece though. Takoyaki was good just was a bit too fishy.
Eleanor Rawson
I had heard alot about this place from Friends and we were in the area for an event so I decided to pop over and try something out .

I ordered the Bao with pork and pickeld vegetables . It was tasty and the perfect little filler snack for on the go . Although I wish the slice of pork had been alittle bigger as mine did not fill my bun properly and I ran out of meat for the second half of my bun .

Other then that the service was polite and friendly and fast ☺️

Will come back if ever in the area again.
Brave Eat
Very good on the go lunch or snack place. I love the Taiwanese fried chicken it is the best! They also make good decent drinks.
Yvannah Graham
What a fantastic place! The peri peri hash brown is the most delicious thing I've ever tasted. The chicken bao was yummy too - and what cool packaging!
LV.N
Great takeaway
ㅇㅇ
Love their Ji Pai (Taiwanese Deep-fried Chicken Steak) and Spicy wings. But my all time favourite here is their kumara fries though. All their deepfried food is extremely crispy, I don't think you would have tried any crispier kumara fries anywhere else. I have also tried their Manager's meal and it was delicious and really filling. Their staff are always so kind too :)
Pig Cat
Popular spot for takeaway meals. Loved the fried chicken and curry rice. Pork belly mince rice was just average. Average portion at that price. Need some time to wait for takeaway.
Vidhi
Loved the Hei hei chicken bao with peri peri sauce. Definitely recommend that. Not a big fan of the chicken bites deluxe.
Smwkiwi
Nice and juicy fried chicken. Best fried chicken ever! Everyone should go. I love XL fried chicken and Kumara chips. So nice so yummy. Great place!!!
Eileen
This is the best place for me to have a afternoon snack with friends in city after uni. Their signature XL fried Chicken is super good, especially their Charcoal flavor XL 🥰. Also Kumara Fries is my favorite sides to go with the chicken. Highly recommended Kai eatery.👍
Grace Huang
The perfect place for a quick bite.

Service: 9/10
The people here have been very nice every time I come here for food.
They happily take your order and give you anything you need.
The food is made immediately upon ordering so you can ensure freshness.

Food: 9/10
They have a small menu but most items are absolutely delicious.
The kumara Fries are a mixture of sweet salty and spicy. It’s so unbelievable crunchy yet not greasy at all.
The fried chicken is so big and the spices pop in your mouth.

Ambiance: 8/10
The infamous container is convenient for takeaways but there are also seats on the side for you to sit and eat.
The orange container is also very prominent so it can be spotted from far away.

This is my go to when I’m on queen street whenever I’m looking for a snack.
💓 K
Tried the famous XL Fried Chicken (in original salt and pepper flavour) + 1 layer drink combo (strawberry and mango smoothie). The chicken was tasty at first, but it gets too salty towards the end and the drink tasted nice, not too sweet, but there were still big chunks of ice so it’s not fully blended. Anyway, would love to return and try their Bao.
Angelica Starina
Prices are sooo pleasing to the eyes and soul, the chips and chicken are very yummy :) the packaging is also very very easy to use and dispose of, but the waiting times can vary from 5-10 minutes or longer. I would say because of the long lines and also preparation :)) the location and surroundings are great and close to uni so its easy access too :D
Benedict Uy
They are primarily known for their fried chicken but we just came from lunch so just grabbed some bubble tea. They are located inside a container just off Wakefield street near Aotea Center. Just walk down the road a bit to see the shipping container shop. You can tell they're open when the front is open.

They didn't have any of the taro fresh milk tea so I went with the brown sugar one instead. The tea was quite nice but the pearls a bit harder than I like. The straw just fit inside the drink container which had a screw cap.

The fried food smell was really nice as I was ordering.
Ang Sarap
The first time I tried Taiwanese Breaded Chicken or Ji-Pai was in a Pasar Malam in Malaysia and I was so surprised that the chicken part used in this street food was chicken breast, it was so juicy and tasty, a which is the opposite of what a badly cooked chicken breast would be. It was so good when we moved to New Zealand I started missing it hence I started to make it at home on my own which basically yields the same texture and flavour. Many years forward this place called Kai Eatery showed up and now it’s easy to find Taiwanese Breaded Chicken in Auckland especially when you crave for it.
Grace
I can’t quite remember specific details about kai eatery as I visited quite some time ago. The pork belly rice bowl was amazing - it packed an unexpected flavour punch 💥 I absolutely inhaled it! Drinks here are superb too, according to my sister. Not much seating space though, would be cold in the winter.
Grace Su
Tried the famous XL fried chicken with chefs seasoning and kumara fries. Both had the same type of addicting, sweet, savoury flavour. Those kumara fries were life changing. Fried chicken was tender and delicious, though a tad too oily.
Jieer
We tried the XL fried chicken with chef’s special flavor, super yummy! We both love it, this is the best in Auckland! Will come back try more later.
CCS
The best Taiwanese chicken cutlet in the city. Freshly cooked and extremely well seasoned juicy chicken. Highly recommend it if you’re after a quick bite.
Food2belly
Super yummy kumura fries, I always get them at the night market. Crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. The seasoning is so yum with sprinkles of sugar and MSG. Though can never finish it as the seasoning gets too strong over time.
Ditoya
Tried their heihei bao and it really good. Really filling and the fried chicken inside was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside which was amazing since it's way too common to find super dry fried chicken. Will be back to try other stuff off the menu!
Aparna Gajelli
Tried the strawberry and mango smoothie (more like slushy) at the lantern festival. I loved the drink unfortunately they had limited flavors (3 flovors only) at the market but I enjoyed my drink and loved their little bottle aswell. Reusing it now to make my own fruit slushies. I would love to visit their actual store and try out their fried chicken and more varieties of their drinks.
Went here a couple times during holiday but they still closed, and finally manage to try it.. extra large extreme one for my first try and it’s really really yummy.. i like it.. i wish i can go here everyday

Knew them from night market. They huge deep fried chicken anf delicious Taiwanese guabao. It's a red cooked sweet pork in a bun with slice of cucumber and some seasoning. Tasty so good. They also have pretty drinks now.
Andrean
We tried xl chicken + drink combo and rice bowl with pork belly.
Nice food and generous portion. It will be great if we can have more comfortable seating, especially if you bring your kids along.
We will definitely come back if we are around the area.
Gwen Tai
Loved the crispy chicken! So succulent and very tasty, hot'n'spicy wasn't too spicy however so yum definitely recommended. Also had the kumara chips that's lightly tempura fried was delicious. Good place for cheap eats and very filling
Jessie Atafu
Well worth the hype!
Friendly staff and delicious food! We ordered the HeiHei bao, chicken bites and kumara fries and they were all full of flavour. Succulent chicken and sweet but crispy kumara fries.
Definitely worth a visit!
Elizabethjansenvanrensb96
All I can say is- eat those kumara / sweet potato fries! PLEASE. Go for it.
They are covered with sugar and salt. They are SUPER crispy outside and so so so moist inside.
God bless kumara fries.
Jane Cassandra Ramos
I ordered the heihei bao but sadly I got the pork 😔 I still ate it but it was alright. It’s lacking with flavour but the pork belly is really nice. I wish they gave me the right order as I always come here and get the XL fried chicken 😊 I wanted to try something new but sadly got given the wrong order 😔
Tanz
Had a chance to try Kai Eatery from Pakuranga night market. There was a long queue but the waiting wasn’t too bad. I ordered chicken bites - spicy and hot flavor. The chicken was cooked perfectly - crispy outside & tender and juicy inside. But the taste wasn’t hot and spicy at all. They needed to add more of that seasoning powder. Overall it was a good fried chicken.
Jai.leong
Great place for a snack and drink. Classic milk tea and Heihei bao was delish, bun was super soft and fried chicken hit the spot. Matcha green milk tea was also not bad!
DVDM
You think you've had good fried chicken? You reckon your Sunday roast is legit? Nah mate.

Kai's boasts a simple but effective menu. The chicken is unlike any fried chicken you've ever had. Juicy. Not greasy. Crispy. Flavoursome. Honestly these are words my brain is using to describe a feeling that transcends the tastebud and human imagination. Spicy. Delectable. Sweet. Awesome. The kumara is best described as a nutty sweet morsel wrapped in a wonton like package. It doesn't need accompaniments. It's perfect.

Fast as well. 10/10 will perfectly recommend.
Ayaan Shaikh
Love the charcoal fried chicken from here, absolutely massive servings, didn't realize how big it was until I got it and it was seasoned nicely and have a very aromatic smell. One thing that I didn't like was that it got a bit soggy and it was a little too oily for my taste but otherwise a pretty solid place. Also the prices are very reasonable!
Nadya Carisa
Really nice chicken! I always get the spicy fried chicken from here and they’re huge and juicy. Worth the price and it’s a good snack around the city
Donna
I love their gua bao and fried chicken. Their food truck is right outside my former school and they never disappoint. Many students always buy their popcorn chicken.
Vishal Rai
Love their fried chicken with Bao, Hei Hei is a must try if you are there. even their spicy chicken is great. Awesome little place in Cbd. Can go again and again.
Zachary Ferguson
Awesome! The chicken here is perfectly crispy and juicy! The layered mango drink is fluffy and sweet and comes in a lovely bottle. Great value and the staff are very friendly as well! Top marks from me :)
Adrian An
Fried chicken is really good. But kind of over priced. Also milk tea is nice, the bottle looks very neat and pretty, but still overpriced.
So generally taste fine, but OVERPRICED.
Bean
Yum fried chicken definitely recommend getting the chefs speical. The only down side is their opening hours not open late enough. Still well worth a vist
Rosanne Choy
Friend ordered me Kai eatery on uber eats for my lunch today. Best fried chicken I've ever tried. Would definitely come back for more in the future. This Asian style fried chicken was so flavorful and the chicken was also really crispy.
Thom
My favourite fried chicken takeaway in the city. Chicken always cooked to perfect moisture, crispy mouthwatering coating and seasoning is on point. Friendly staff, in and out in minutes.
Jack C
Short and sweet review.

Fried chicken, done well, reasonably priced. And most importantly tasty. Their Chicken on rice is a great takeaway dish for a lunch.

The only downside is, because they fry all chicken to order. Sometimes, the waiting time is quite long.
Angie Nguyen
Staffs, food and beverage quality were perfect. You are going to get more clients if the time taken to serve is improve. Anyway, highly recommend as it's worth.
Angela
Decided to try this place after seeing Instagram photos and was not dissapointed!! Service is quite slow but the food is worth it. We got the fried chicken bun (can’t remember the menu name for it) and bubble tea. The chicken was seasoned well and tender - the drink was also very nice and came in a convenient bottle.

The Dish: Fried Chicken XL Original + Peri Peri Shoestring Fries
Will probably put me off the majority of Asian Fusion restaurants. The fried chicken, served in truly XL servings, was much too sweet for my tastes. The bread-crumbing was weird again with an almost doughy texture underneath the crisp outer. The shoestring fries on the other hand were well done. A solid punch on the Peri Peri saltiness without overpowering spice. Fries themselves were crisp but the texture was off - the interior of the fry seemed almost frozen but the flavour masked it and made up for it. Value was average - large portions for a hefty price. Overall, worth a try but beware the Asian Fusion taste.

Came through here for an early dinner this evening. It's a food truck just off queen street. There were a lot of people so I assumed the food would be good. We ended up getting Heihei (steamed bun with chicken, cucumber, slaw and chipotle sauce), shoestring fries (with seasoning, not sure what it was but it was nice) and an XL chicken chef special (with plum sauce). I liked my Heihei, it was different. That chipotle sauce was good, I think it would go nice on the chips. My fiance loved his plum chicken, it was delicious.

I am definitely keen to come back and try their drinks and also Gao Bau (steamed bum with pork).
Bailey
Been here for lunch and brought chicken bites and a layered smoothie. The chicken bites were nice tender and crunchy, the smoothie was also very good. the only let down was that they seemed more worried about their uber eats orders and it took along time for me to order and get mt food and they also forgot to give me a straw with my drink which made it difficult to drink.
Tim Tianpai Li
XL Fried Chicken all the way! It's the best item on the menu no question about it. Delicious, succulent, juicy, tender on the inside, crispy on the outside. The only downside is that it's too big! I can never finish it in one go 😂Little creative eatery recommended to everyone.
Louise
We came here for lunch and got the:
• XL Chicken Salt and Pepper
• Onion Rings
• Shoestring Peri-Peri chips

The chicken was crisp and had a dry coating rather than the usual greasy affair. The fries were the star of the meal! They came with a little toothpick so our hands wouldn’t get too oily/powdered (spoiler: they did anyway).

The only thing I probably wouldn’t get again is the onion rings. They were a bit too oily for my taste. However, that could have been due to the fact we ordered a un-adultley amount of deep-fried food already!

Juan Ortiz
One of the best chickens I've ever tried. Tender, juicy and crispy, full of flavor and big enough to satisfy ones hunger strike. Milkshakes were on point and full of some serious tasty chocolate. Also customer service was really nice. 😄😄😄
Jeffie
Seen some great reviews of this place and the mrs likes it here too. We had the hot and spicy chicken, onion rings, kumara fries and a milk foam black. It was all delicious and deep fried! I didn't like the tea, the foam reminded of cheese tea which I don't like. Otherwise great and will be back again.
Sarah
Love this place! I've only tried the chicken bites and they are delicious, always moist and juicy and full of flavour. Will have to go back and try more things on the menu. The staff are always friendly and pricing is reasonable. Def worth a visit when in the city.
Linh 💛
I should have tried this place a long time ago!!!

Service: Super friendly staff but you might have to wait a bit for food. They were really busy as they had to pack heaps of orders for Uber eats. Waiting time for a bun was 20 mins and for chicken bites 15 mins.

Food: Amazing! I got some chicken bites and the Heihei bun of crispy chicken. I love the bun, probably one of the best open buns I’ve had in Auckland. The chicken bites were delicious too. The coating for these bites were really tasty.

Price: 8$ for a bun, 7$ for chicken bites so pretty reasonable. 12$ for chicken and rice which is a pretty good deal given the the quality.

Definitely gonna head back here for more goodies 💛
IMwatermelon
We went to last Sunday night market at Glenfield and tried fried chicken as snack. They severed very fast, and we quite like the pack. The chicken tasted crispy outside and juicy inside. We two girls share one, it cost $8.5. Reasonable price and good serve.

The power on the fried chicken is kinda salty, but drinking with mango juice (other food stall sold) is perfect balance between sweet and salty.
Kwin Dela Torre
As a uni student there’s only a few minutes to have food between classes, it was very fortunate for Kai eatery to be next to AUT. Their food is simple and very filling and packed with awesome flavours. My favourite is their XL chicken for $9, which come in many different flavours but I tend to stick with their spicy or chefs special. The service is awesome! Great and friendly, very polite and welcoming. I have yet to taste their thick shakes but heard they were one of the best on Queen Street!
Monchang
Been here twice and it always brings me back to Taiwan everytime I eat the XL fried chicken! Amazing how they were able to capture the authentic flavor of the famous Taiwanese fried chicken. Will be back for more definitely!
Joshua Grainger
The XL fried chicken is excellent, and the kumara chips are even better. Just outstanding quality. I visited a few weeks ago and was also greeted by the most friendly staff. I will definitely be visiting again!
Kiwilisa
Got the chicken bites for lunch, the portion size was perfect for one person, or two people as a snack. The chicken itself was really soft and flavourful. However, if the outside was a little crispier it would be better (it looks crispy, but it’s actually really soft!!) Also more pepper!! That would better resemble the taste of chicken in Taiwan :) Would definitely go back to try other things on the menu.
Bella Luv Food
Kai Eatery is gonna be my new favourite snack spot in CBD. They served every thing an asian girl is addicted to: milk tea, popcorn chicken, chips and open buns. The buns/ bao are very tasty. The price is also reasonable and the portion is quite good. They don't have many seats but you can always carry the food to the square about 5 steps across the street to enjoy them under the sun.
Emma
Ordered the XL hot and spicy fried chicken, the first few bites were absolutely amazing with a really nice flavour (although I feel it was a stretch to call them spicy as they were more sweet than spicy). It was much bigger than what I expected however it was hard to finish by the end as the flavours did end up being a bit overpowering and greasy. I'd definitely go back to try their other flavours though!
Angela Hollings
Had the crunchy XL fried chicken and it was absolutely delicious! Really nicely seasoned. Definitely would recommend for when you are craving fried chicken
Paul O
My first Taiwanese bao so I don't really have a point of reference. It was pretty tasty. Meat was tender, the steamed bun was soft. The huge packaging was a bit OTT and a bit of an environmental waste. Massive price increase recently (over 20%), totally not worth it now.
Tony Ma
This review is based purely on their 雞排。

Because that is the only item on the menu I have ordered, and since fell in love with and don’t want to try order anything else.

They also have a stand at the night markets which is cool. Can’t remember the price but it’s well worth whatever I paid for them.

Highly recommend, be silly to miss out.

HUGE HOT JUICY TENDER CHICKEN

Service: 5/5
Food Quantity: 5/5
Food Quality: 5/5
Price: Monies worth
Kristina Alpatskaya
Only had it a couple of times, had the pork belly and deep fried chicken burger (sort of). They both really good, chicken was done freshly and perfectly crispy and moist, pork belly nice a soft. They usually run out of pork belly pretty early, so that is sad.
I_like_pickles
Interesting and innovative pop up eatery. The menu is simple with plenty of choices.

Personally I'm not a fan of gua baos in general so I try to avoid them at all costs.

Prices are reasonable. I like their sides/snacking menu with the fried chicken.
Miura Elikana
I ordered the rice bowl with original
Crispy chicken. Can I just say that the chicken fillet was so succulent and moist I loved it. It wasn't crispy which I didn't mind too much but the flavour is delicious. I will go back and try the crispy chicken nibbles.
USE HANSID FOR GOLD DISCOUNT
Such a lovely little place close to uni, I ordered the Crispy chicken rice bowl for lunch and it was so filling. The chicken was super fresh, flavourful and not very greasy. The rice bowl comes with a nice salad, dressing and a few big pieces of crispy chicken, worth the $12! Will return for lunch again :)
Ming
Kai brings signature Taiwanese street food to Auckland. I've tried both their chicken bites and XL chicken cutlet and been damn impressed with both. Their coating is incredibly crisp while the meat is succulently tender. You can choose a few different flavorings with salt and pepper as default. I'd recommend trying their spicy option, especially in winter. Might even break a sweat 😂
Bea Ambrosio
Good quality street food 👌🏼 loved my Kai Eatery experience starting with the service, presentation and of course the flavour! They satisfied my bao cravings and didn't break the bank (compared to others).
I love my pork and chicken and I always get 2 bao's because one is not enough 😂 this time I favoured the chicken over the pork 🙃
LuciferTSN
I was really thinking should I give it a 2 or a 3 for my review? For the first time I tried Kai eatery's Taipei gua bao it was at the lantern festival market. The pork was so tender and flavoursome with lots of tasty stuffing inside. OMG it was the best ever. However when I particularly made my visit to the queen street store once it's opened, and I was just not impressed at all. The bun itself was fluffy as usual but that's where it stops, compare with the last time and it was just not a lot of flavour and there wasn't much stuffing but a thin slice of pork with two slices of cucumbers. So much of a let down, would really have to consider if I would re-visit. Please Kai eatery I don't want to see another one of my favourite restaurant goes bad.
Tien Pham
Oh man. If you want juicy, succulent, fresh fried chicken... this is the place to be. The XL salt n pepper fried chicken is so good and their peri peri chips are lit.

Would recommend! 👌
Chiny Chin Chin
Awesàome XL FRIED chicken chop! I've finally tasted it today. Ive had the hot n spicy one and it was delicious !!!! It's not XL but XXL to me haha! One thing I love about them is the shops name because KAI means eat in Maori.
Haden
Delicious fried chicken and huge. Nice service but my only concern is the packing for the bao is excessive and there's no recycling bin nearby.
Rachel Hui
We ordered the XL hot and spicy today. I must say when it was good, it didn't live up the hype for me.

Authentic Taiwanese flavour, the chicken was juicy but it just wasn't crispy enough, it went soggy very quickly.

Hopefully it was a one off, with the amount of chicken they are frying every night, they must have mastered the balance.

Alex Tan
Superb service, and good quality foods since open. Love the kumara fries with extra plum powder. Always a hard decision to get XL fried chicken or chicken bites

This hidden gem is perfect for lunch on the go! They're slight tucked away behind Queen Street, but it's definitely worth the walk. There generously seasoned Peri Peri fries really hit the spot with that perfect little kick. Feeling Hungus? Order an XL chicken done hot and spicy! Beautifully tender and juicy, and you definitely won't be hungry after!

Boy this place did not disappoint! It was my first time that I tried Kai Eatery and got the XL Fried Chicken hot n spicy and it was truly the biggest juiciest tastiest fried chicken I have ever had. Got that along with the peri peri fries as a combo and it was filling. Very satisfying and definitely will go back for more.

First off, impressive and innovative packaging! I ordered the original XL fried chicken and the Taipei gua bao. Fried chicken was XL-sized indeed, crispy and juicy meat inside. Deliciously seasoned! Taipei gua bao was amazing - the pork belly was so tender and it melted away in my mouth, perfectly complemented by the soft steamed bun, crunchy peanuts, and salted vegetables. It was around an 8-minute wait, but I was the only customer. Service was amazing, the lady was upbeat and friendly and made sure I knew how to make the most out of the packaging. Highly recommended!

Decent fried chicken gua bao from friendly counter staff :) bao was super packed with sauce and salad so a bit messy. Sadly they had run out of the pork belly which was what I was really there for. Food truck conditions mean a small amount of outdoor seating right next to Queen St. Takeaway boxes seemed pretty extreme for one bao! They pop open dramatically when you undo the tabs. Maybe I'll be back, or maybe I'll stop complaining about Auckland gua bao and just head to Taiwan again.

Absolutely adore the XL Fried Chicken 😍 huuuuuuge (like legit bigger than my face) piece of crispy, perfectly spiced, juicy chicken, served in an innovative package to keep hands clean. Have had their chicken several times, in different forms, and never been disappointed. The menu looks exciting, so will keep returning and trying new stuff ❤

Came here with some friends , because I'm vegetarian I got the peri peri fries and they were amazing considering how much you get and how much you pay. My friends also enjoyed the chicken (they thought it was really good!)

Also if you are a uni student there is a deal on niesh where you get a combo for like 11 bucks (pretty worth it imo!)

TL;DR: Delicious, cheap, filling, homey chicken. Great service. Recommended: Spicy Chicken Bites and Gua Bao
Finally got around to reviewing this place! I've been visiting since I saw a friend tag this place on Facebook. I was so, so excited when I first saw the advertisement for Kai Eatery on my newsfeed. As a Taiwanese Kiwi, I miss the familiar taste of traditional Taiwanese fried chicken. Kai Eatery brought all those memories back with their wonderfully flavourful chicken.

Food: I usually come here on my way home, so I get everything with that in mind. I mostly get the chicken bites (spicy or not), which are small morsels of deliciousness. The chicken is moist and marinated nicely - they are best enjoyed hot as the juices explode once you bite into one. I also quite like the two Gua Baos that I had. The Taipei Gua Bao was close to a traditional one, especially with the addition of crushed peanuts. My favourite is, however, the Heihei Gua Bao simply because it has the delicious chicken in it - yum! I definitely need to try one of their specialty sodas once I get the chance.
I bought 2XL chickens (one spicy and one regular) home for my parents once. My dad refuses to eat anything that he isn't familiar with - he absolutely loved the chicken and asked that I buy it again. I'd say that's a win.

Service: The owner and staff here are extremely friendly and polite. They're also attentive in that they remember you if you visit often (guilty as charged), which is great as well. Speed is fast but quality is never compromised. There are also chairs around if standing for a bit is too much for some people. Sometimes there may be a line or people waiting around, but it's always worth the wait.

Price: Reasonable price, especially for a university student like me. One serving of chicken bites is quite filling and satisfying for me. At $7 per serving, that's a pretty good deal.

Overall, thank you Kai Eatery for bringing delicious Taiwanese chicken to Auckland. I'm so happy that there's a delicious fried chicken place around school - it's a great addition to the restaurants and food trucks available in the city. I'll definitely keep nagging my friends to come here for a quick bite. Good stuff :)

Have been wanting to visit this neat food truck for a while, the aromas are so enticing.

Finally tried the salt and pepper XL chicken today and my goodness! The flavours are insanely good with glorious texture.

Essentially a huge slab of delicious, crunchy chicken, I was very happy with my purchase!

The container is great, too. You can tear off bits as you go, keeping your chicken accessible and hands clean!

Update:

Tried their original XL Fried Chicken today.

It was exactly the same with what I tried in Taiwan-- crispy outside and succulent inside. YUMMY like always.

One thing that stops me from visiting more often is the price-- $9 for a piece of large fried chicken is a bit pricey for students.

Finally got to try this Taiwan style Chinese food. I think their signature menu is the XL fried chicken, but I've tried it multipel times at Taiwan so I ordered something else instead.

The braised pork on rice: the diced pork belly (more like pork belly mince) is nicely braised in soy sauce, with some marinated green vege on the side. And normally there's some tofu in the bowl , but today they are out of tofu so the stuff offered a drum stick instead. It's very nice of him and I would like to go back to try the one with tofu on the side next time.

The Taipei Gua Bao: Hands down for this one! What a high quality and delicious Bao! For me it's better than many restaurants & bars. The pork belly is melting in the mouth! And the vege is very fresh! Super yum!

Matcha& Redbean Bao: Amaaaazing! It melted a bit on the way to home. But the taste wasn't affected by this! The deep fried Bao was very crispy, and the Matcha ice cream matched perfectly with the redbean.

The periperi chips& the latte were average, not bad, but not as amazing as those food I mentioned above.

Service was very friendly.

Would definitely recommend their Baos!
Have tried their fried chicken and Kumera chip. The great taste is not found elsewhere. Very keen to try EVERY item Kai have to offer. Especially the Bao bun and stewed pork rice.

Omg! I'm in love with their XL chicken and peri peri fries. That's the only thing I order when I go there . I heard they have another store in the night market but the one I go too, is the one in town. Just right next to AUT tower . It's convenient for me and it's technically my lunch every Thursday ! Great flavour great service.
Chicken is juicy and crispy.
Go and try it a try.

I actually went to Kai at the night markets, but I've been meaning to visit their queen street truck too!
The service was really good!
I ordered the fried chicken Bao and Kumara Fries for only $11 and it took awhile because it was freshly made to order.
But I was pleasantly surprised with it! The Bao was really decently sized, the fried chicken was generous and crunchy on the outside and tender on the inside; the Bao bun was soft and fluffy; the fries were crunchy as good flavour (slightly too greasy for my liking though).
Overall I was very happy and I will definitely be popping over to the truck on Queen St more in the future!
