Review Lao Sze Chuan Restaurant - Auckland Central

Lovely experience in this little gem. The service was great - fast, responsive, friendly. The food was average - wok fried noodles a bit dry, oily and salty; steamed dumplings were great though. Prices are affordable and portions are large. Loved the free tea that they give out. Overall, enjoyable experience and won’t mind coming back.

Such a lovely place! The deco is really pretty and cozy, with wooden furniture and indoor plants. We ordered the pan fried chicken and cabbage dumplings. Loved the flavours! The cumin lamb starter was overwhelming cumin flavour for me, but my friends seemed to like it by pairing it with fried rice. Nice service and good experience overall.

We stopped by this restaurant late at night after picking up my brother from the airport. Thinking that we probably would not make it in time to our chosen restaurant, we stopped by this one with promises of food for our already starving stomachs. We ordered three dishes - fried chicken with chillies, stir fried pork strips in noodles, and a deep fried tofu in spicy sauce. The tofu arrived first - crispy, beautiful, and a fine accompaniment with the steamed rice. The chicken too a lot longer to arrive though, so by the time it got to the table, we ran out of rice. I asked for more and was told, "I'm sorry, we're out of rice." Wanting more, I ended up asking for another noodle dish to add more carbs to the meal. Chicken was nicely deep fried as well, and the chillies let out a nice, slow, burn and we ended up gulping water when finishing the chicken. The pork noodles were sweet and sour which was a nice complement and doused the fire from the chicken with chillies. A surprising find and one of those moments where I was glad that I explored outside of my comfort zone! I'll definitely be back!

Absolutely enjoyed the taste of this place and super friendly services. They have changed a lot since I last been here, all the dish was seasoned nicely and the ginormous shrimp form the stir fried shrimp with cashew was espacially advertising. Overall loved this meticulous place and I would be more than happy to dine here again.

Love their food. And very reasonably price. Service is efficient and friendly.

Great food, great service, nice atmosphere, will definitely go back

Absolutely delicious Sichuan cuisine! We had the deep fried boneless chicken with chillies, green beans and pork & shrimp dumplings. The service was wonderful with the friendliest waitress we’ve been served by long time- she was thoughtful and considerate. As an added bonus, the prices are very reasonable too.

Great fast service, excellent prices and value. We got the tofu fried rice and the vegan dumplings steamed and fried. All delicious. Daughter has even requested her 9yr birthday dinner here.

Flavour of food ordered good esp. fried dumplings. Have had other dishes; size is average but flavour is really good. Place is clean, tidy and has a pleasant atmosphere. Definitely worth going to.

Great authentic food especially if you like spicy. The chilli dumplings are the best in Auckland that I've some across yet. Owner is super friendly, can't wait to try the rest of the menu!

Awesome schezuan food. Extremely reasonable prices. Clean and comfortable atmosphere. Try one their huge portioned, rice or noodles dishes ($10) Best value Chinese food in Auckland. We are having cumin lamb and ginger/green onion lamb. 😀

good food and good service. the fried noodle is highly recommended

Great food and decent prices. Menu caters primarily for groups. Very interesting specials! Highly recommend trying them. The staff are great and really take their time with you.

Fresh, delicious and quick food. We found this spot merely by accident.. looked it up and saw that it had only 2 stars but it was really nice.. although the music in the background was top 20. Overall happy with our shared meals. Super tasty... 😉

Excellent Eggplant...and a reasonable price. The Kung Pao chicken was a little ordinary, but did I say that the Eggplant was excellent? It's a pretty typical Dom Rd Chinese Restaurant. Good price, reasonably clean, can get a little noisy at times, but is a great place for casual dining with friends. So we will be going back to Lao Sze Chuan.

This chinese restaurant is unexpectedly nicely decorated, these ornamental Chinese traditional features have just made the dinning experiences unforgettable. Would come back in the future, great services, the waiters and the huge portions of foods’ve just made my day:):)☺️☺️

Amazing food and amazing service. Definitely recommend!

We've been searching for the best dumplings for ages and looks like we won't need to search any further! As a bonus, it's a nice, clean space with friendly and efficient staff

Good atmosphere, nice food! Restaurant is clean and tidy, not like some of the others surrounding it. We enjoyed it

Favorite supper place!! Their $10 meals are so generous and flavourful too! Service is good, staffs are always so friendly and attentive ☺️ Their sweet and sour pork and just perfection!

This was such a stunning braised beef noodle soup! For anyone on the fence about sichuan peppercorn, there is the loveliest flavor of this in the flavorful broth. Only thing I would change for my taste is more broth to noodle ratio (the noodles are fresh and bouncy so this is in no way a complaint). I just wanted more of the broth and I'll definitely go back for it! The waitress we had was so helpful and friendly and double checked with the chef whether the beef cut was brisket (it was) despite the restaurant being busy. Better ambience and decor than most other places for dominion road. Well priced menu. Other patrons' food looked interesting and delicious too. Already keen to go back.

Food was very reasonably priced. Some dishes tasted great some didn’t really impress but in general it was still good value for money. <br/>The waitress was really polite and gave us a great service even during a busy hour. We could definitely feel the difference of the service level from other restaurant in the vicinity.

Food is ok, not very impressed. Price, environment and staff are ok. Nothing is very outstanding, but nothing wrong for a lunch or a dinner.

Best Chinese food restaurant.. authentic taste.. loved the food served .. good service and good ambience too.. would love to visit again..<br/>Must try their Chicken fried Noodles and Beef Sizzler..

We went there last night for dinner -quite by chance. Couldn't have picked a better place for dinner on the first day of 2019! The sizzling beef in pepper sauce and cumin lamb were exceptional. Also recommend the boneless chilli chicken. Service was fantastic even on a lean staff over a busy evening. Highly recommended. Will definitely be visiting again.
The Man Who Ate Dominion Rd
I've only eaten here once.<br/>+ Ambience is definitely an upgrade from the Dominion Road average<br/>- Prices are higher as well.- Food on the pictures and on the plate looks really good, however the taste was lacking some punchiness. Had to add some chilli oil as the taste was 'meh'.<br/><br/>"Willing to come back as I believe in second chances".

Decided to try this place out tonight. Definitely recommend this place! The food was delicious and good portion sizes for the price. Great variety with the menu. The staff were so lovely and service was great. With so many eateries in this area, this is definitely going to be one of my favourites. Will be back for sure! :)

Great, consistent Chinese food and super friendly staff. We live local and this is our favourite in the Balmoral set of shops. Sweet & sour pork is the best for miles.

Had an early dinner here and really enjoyed our meal. There was only one server but he was pretty efficient. A one man band taking orders, serving and cashier.<br/><br/>The food was served quickly and arrived piping hot. The deep fried squid was fried to crispy perfection and was well seasoned. The pork mince and aubergine was very tasty but extremely greasy. The marinated beef starter was flavoursome and was a generous serving. The fish and pickled cabbage soup was plentiful and we loved the sour taste.<br/><br/>Tea was served immediately and the place was tidy and clean. I would definitely be back to try other dishes and their lunch specials. Overall I was really satisfied and highly recommend this restaurant.

We went to Monday night. Staff was super friendly. Food was fast and good. And quite busy even though it was Monday. I found a good dumpling place now. I might go again for dumplings.

Went here for lunch a couple of Sunday's ago and again today beautiful food great staff well priced., was very impressed with wait staff that said some none Asian people don't like a particular dish as is has dried mushrooms in it , but ordered it anyway and really like it , cheers 👍

We was going to another place for lunch but they were closed so we happened to be here. They weren't busy during Friday lunch hour. Our food came pretty quick. We had a cold dish fungus, sizziling beef with cumin and hot soup. It is always nice to have something hot in the winter.
Hasiba Zareh
Delicious chicken stir fried noodles! Will definitely head back to try some of the other stuff on the menu! The portions are huge! The service is really fast and efficient.

Not good at all. Next to one of Auckland’s most popular Chinese takeaway but nothing close to it. We asked for a dish mild spicy but got it soo hot we could not eat it.

Regular at this place. Their sizzling lamb with cumin is a must try. Can be spicy though. The staff are quite friendly and the service is fast.

I've been here a few times and I love how clean and nice the restaurant is compared to the rest on the same road.<br/><br/>The food is spicy but I find it quite tasty. It can geg a little oily and salty depending on the dish but overall the quality of the food here is good.

Rather disappointing experience. Got served raw pork dumplings and sour pork dumplings mung bean jelly was not so great best part would be the squid would not return
Ken
The worst meal we've ever had.. gave us raw dumplings (pork, cabbage, shrimp). All the other pork dumplings they gave stink so bad...it was like the pork or veges were off.

Service was fast and great food. We had the double cooked pork belly, eggplant with minced pork and pork & chives dumplings. We loved the eggplant dish although a little oily but very tasty. The combination with garlic and ginger really complements the dish. The dumplings was a hit with the kids. The pork belly dish could’ve been better with more pork on it. Very keen to try the other dishes next time.

Came here on a Saturday night for a small reunion. Between the 3 people we got beef and cabbage fried dumplings, popcorn chicken, sweet and sour pork, and spicy pot. There was only 1 waitress working but she was pretty quick on the service.<br/><br/>The spicy pot was a bit salty and even though it was a little spicy, it was more towards the numbing spiciness because of the Szechuan pepper used. The fried dumplings tasted okay but as soon as it gets a little cold, it turns hard immediately and the juice inside just tastes a little bland. The popcorn chicken was a bust as it was sour (the sauce) and hard due to being overly fried. The only authentic tasting dish was the sweet and sour pork which actually tasted sweet and sour and the pork was tender on the inside and crispy on the outside.<br/><br/>The bill came to around $70 which was okay but they charge rice by bowls ($2 per bowl) as most Chinese restaurants charge by person.<br/><br/>Taste - 6.5/10<br/>Size - 8/10<br/>Price - 7/10<br/>Service - 7/10

Food is ok<br/>Don’t know why their open time is so short. The stuff’s attitude is rude. Would not consider go back again.

After four visits within the past 7days, having different dishes every time, I can honestly say that this is in my opinion is the best restaurant in the area (and there are a ton) Love it.
Girl On The Move
We've tried all the dumplings along Dominion Rd, and we put up poor service and sharing tables, and literally being kicked out for taking too long, for far too long. Then I discovered Lao Sze Chuan. Pretty much a paradise and undiscovered, presumably because they haven't paid the urban list for an article yet. <br/>This place literally has the best dumplings. The pork and chive dumplings are so fresh that the soup inside them are green when you bite into them. The prawn, egg and chive dumplings are excellent. We get two to share between the two of us, one boiled and one fried. The prawn fried Noodle and the vegetarian spring rolls also make excellent additions if you're in a group. The service is actually amazing, and they'll never ask you to share a table, they also don't have cracked or mix and match dinnerware like their neighbours. They have invested quite a lot into the look of the place. <br/>

A great place for Sichuan food. Heaps better than the more popular establishment next door. The Sizzling Pepper Chicken and Chicken Fried noodles are great. Waiting to try the whole fish the next time. Nice Ambience an Good Polite service

A fabulous restaurant that opened up after the previous Japanese restaurant closed down. I loved the ambience of this place, its decor is a mixture of Western walls with some Eastern brick and bracks. The food is relatively inexpensive, comes in big portions and there is a wide range of options available if you are not into the spicy Sichun style. Can't wait to come back here again.

We've been here for several times. Love there awesome food! Chicken dumplings are our favorite. Another will recommend is their deep fried chicken with chili. Nice people=)

First off, this place is really pleasant in its appearance and ambience... so spacious and hence, stands out in comparison to Spicy House which it is located beside!<br/><br/>We were actually gonna go to Spicy House but the appeal from this place to dine-in was tempting, so we did... and it wasn't all that great :/<br/><br/>The staff were accommodating and (...again, I gotta say) everything looked really good... I liked how the menus, which are very large in size BTW, showed pictures of the dishes - finally a restaurant has this done real well, thank you!<br/><br/>The pan-fried Chicken & Cabbage Dumplings were good but tasted a better with the Soy Sauce & Chili Oil - nothing especially different or awesome, but it was as good as it is anywhere with the exception of the fried side having an extra crispy and thin layer, it felt like. The Deep-Fried Chicken (boneless) with Chilly was next - the chicken was overly crispy to the point of being hard and mostly unenjoyable. It's basically the same as Chilli Chicken at Spicy House, just not nearly as good in terms of the taste/spice or the amount it's deep-fried. The Fried Chicken Noodle was alright, nothing special, a tad bad-weird in its smell of the oil used. Also, the plates were small for mains, as if they were starter plates that never got switched.<br/><br/>Favourable service, great appearance and lively atmosphere but the food wasn't satisfactory (and messed up our stomachs a little, too), which doesn't make the pricing very likeable - all in comparison to Spicy House as well as in general.

Love it!!!<br/>The dumplings are fabulous and I also recommend the fried chicken with chill. That<br/>was great. BTW, the good news is the green beans is on special now!!!<br/>

this restaurant is the best Szechuan restaurant I have been in Auckland. It has good location and it's convenient to park the car. The decorations design style is simple and the environment is comfortable. It helped me relax. I enjoyed very much. The table and dishes are always clean,so from the sanitation view,i don't worry at all. .the kung pao chicken is my favorite, the chicken cooked is very tender, taste very good. And the material is well matched. Also the hot pot spicy beef is pretty good,if you like spicy food like me,it's really a good choice. All meal I ordered are over my expectation,I will consider this restaurant as my first choice when I want to eat spicy food. The one worth to mention is all the waiters here are professional and willing to help. I am satisfied with the service here and i hope the restaurant can keep it in the future.

I just eat two foods. But these are so nice. I like this restaurant. The chili is so spicy. But I feel so light. The fish and squid are very fresh. The taste of pepper is so serious. When I finished , my tongue and lip tremble a long time. I like this feeling. I will come again.

I like spicy food. And they make very classic Chuan Cuisine! sometimes I will do take away there. will recommend to friends. !!!!!!!!!! <br/><br/>Happy with their service as well. <br/>

My wife and I tried this restaurant for a lunch several weeks ago and were really impressed with the food quality and speedy service. I've become addicted to the broccoli and garlic and have been back several times for dinner. This is now my favourite on the dominion Asian food strip. <br/>

Very average fare.Full marks to the service though. Our server made sure we are comfortable, explained how the concept works, and was generally very attentive, and the food is also great. I will go again!

This was a the worst food experience in NZ, we ordered some food, one of which was a deep fried chicken with chillies. The chicken was over cooked and the taste was not right. The chillies were a bit burnt as well. Even worse, before we left, we tried the chillies! The taste astonished us, they tasted very fishy!!!!!!! How come the chillies in the chicken can taste like fish!! We have to doubt that the chillies were reused!!
Natasha Banerjee
We only came in here because Spicy House was packed (as usual). The food was pretty good. Ordered Egg fried rice and deep fried chilli chicken. The chilli chicken tasted like Indian pakora. Definitely will go back again.
