Review The General Restaurant - Auckland Central

Ken A.
The staff here are excellent, very attentive, polite and friendly. It has a cosy atmosphere and felt very comfortable. I had ordered the pork belly and it was missing the pork crackling but not a big deal as the dish still tasted delicious. The waiter apologised and later came out with a small plate with two small pieces of pork belly with the crackling from the chef. I was surprised and so impressed as it really demonstrates their commitment to excellent customer experiences. Desserts were also delicious and found the presentation was on point. I would highly recommend and will have to return.

Went to Wine Chambers to try their Restaurant Month menu, and it was delicious. The beef short rib was the standout for me, melt-in-your-mouth tender. The recommended wine with the main was a great match. I've also been to Wine Chambers in previous years for work functions and their service and food quality has always been wonderful.

It was very quiet, but it won't be for long because the food and the service was absolutely amazing. The team have come from the best places in town and it shows. The menu is small but the food was fantastic. Who would have thought that Swede would make such a wonderful pasta? The tastes were world class. love this place! perfect ambience and great place to host a corporate dinner! exceptional service and great food!would definitely come back!😊❤️

Great meal! Each course consistently good with the sirloin steak and the langoustine linguine both outstanding. Service was good and attentive without being intrusive. This restaurant is deserving of high accolades- many thanks for a lovely dining experience where the food was prepared with great care!

My husband and I went there last night for our 1st year wedding anniversary and it was absolutely wonderful. The staff were really friendly, the food was delicious and we were served in a timely manner. We would recommended the rice risotto, it was divine! Can't wait to go again :)

Spacious, well appointed restaurant. menu is limited but expertly designed and cooked. Bar is also very limited and barman unhelpful. But others, very attentive staff with lovely demeanour. We were all very surprised when one of our party of ten got food poisoning next day. Unusually, that wouldn't put me off going again. As a bonus there's a 'private room' that doesn't need special payment.

good service and an enjoyable meal, be daring with your menu options and you will be rewarded! Superbly cooked lamb with sweetbreads. excellent ambience and a well thought out wine list - it was the first time I'd ever been served a negroni in a wine glass but it's was comfortable way to enjoy a meal.

Thank you to the team at Wine Chambers. We had a lovely family celebration last night which was enjoyed by all. Great to sit amongst amazing wine, and be guided by the waiting staff on what was suitable. Congratulations on your professionalism.

We were late arriving due to terrible traffic but had rung and let the management know. They were so kind to keep our table for us and the food was really lovely. Highly recommended.

Another serene evening. First rate food and friendly service. Went to some extra effort for us without a fuss. If you want elegant yet relaxed surroundings and classy, fresh and flavoursome food - here they are.

Great service and great food. The fish was so smooth like butter! Wish I remembered the name of the lady there, she was the on duty manager, very polite and professional. Thank you for the great night out!

We had a 3 course grab one deal, not something I normally do, it was great, pork belly starter with prawns, unusual but good, high light was fresh snapper as a main, beautifully done, the panacotta and salted caramel ice cream sealed the deal, awesome and well priced wine list, will be back!

Friday evening and not very busy. I ordered the eye fillet and asked for a bread roll to start, but could only get a massive 6 slice bread portion, and only ate 2 slices! After a nice NZ chardonnay, I asked for a red wine to match the steak. I took the waiter's advice on an ozzie shiraz, but it was far too pungent for the delicate fillet and jus. Thankfully, they replaced it with a punchy NZ Pinot. A good experience, but the music was awful and a bit too loud - consisted of R&B and Country and western with boom boom beats.

We had an event at this restaurant last week with 46 VIP's and I cannot say thank you enough on how well we were looked after and the food was good. I would recommend The General for any events as they make large events seem so easy.

I had really high hopes for this place as the reviews here seemed quite nice but was a little disappointed (possibly an understatement). Firstly, when we arrived and were seated, one of our chairs was broken, which we switched with a table next to us twice until we found a seat that wasn't broken. (The first seat completely came off once we sat down, and the second one's leg detached from the seat). There wasn't anyone to check on us so we couldn't ask them to change tables or seats so we did it ourselves. Secondly, after the waiter poured us water, I noticed that there were lip marks from a previous diner on the rim of my glass which was obviously quite gross. The staff apologised and gave me a new glass of water. Our menus also did not have a price on them, which was a little bit confusing. The menu was not explained to us when we arrived - besides that it was a set menu.

The waitress was friendly, however, she did get our orders mixed up - which she did rectify and apologised and we got the extra dish at no charge. The wait between each course does take a while - as it is a set menu so that was not too much of a surprise. Towards the end of the meal, the waitress just left the water on the table for us to pour ourselves, which seemed odd, because she had been pouring it the entire evening, and it fell short of general expectations of service for fine dining.

Foodwise, we were also quite disappointed. We ordered the tiger prawns for the entree, which tasted like frozen pre-peeled supermarket prawns on a warm salad. For the mains, I ordered the mushroom risotto - which was a little undercooked, but personally I didn't mind it. The plating was reminiscent of café food not really "fine dining" as it's labelled on Zomato. I felt that the beef ragout was made of dry pasta as it stuck together - which doesn't typically happen with fresh pasta. The market fish was decent. I enjoyed the chocolate fondant cake, it had a lovely texture. The pavlova was deconstructed with little bits of fruit with some whipped cream...
To charge $85 for a set menu, I personally would have expected it to be elevated a bit more than what it was.

I personally really do not like giving bad reviews, but felt as if we were given subpar service and food, given that we were under the impression that this would be "fine dining" as advertised. I wouldn't be opposed to giving this place another try if there is a future menu change. I may also note that we did use first tables - so I'm not sure if this affected our experience in any way.

Came here to dine straight after Amano for brunch.

Service was very slow, only one wait staff and one kitchen. It’s not a large restaurant but neat and tidy, the table at the back do need a bit more lighting daytime I feel as it’s a bit dark especially when vacant.

The wait time was quite long for water, drinks, menu, and so on. Was not fast or efficient service.

That being said, there were some really impressive dishes.

The tuna tartare was nice and tasty, very enjoyable. The fish of the day was fresh and very delicious. The spaghetti was perfectly cook however bland due to the overpower of seasoning from the other dishes. The Brussel Sprouts were delicious! They were deep fried however, same with the kale.. maybe dehydrating them or baking them next time for a more premium healthy meal? Just a thought.

The icecream was absolutely delicious. They only have one option and I think that was great and made it easy for the table. I loved the icecream.

Overall great experience, it is still a relatively new restaurant and I feel as time progresses can only get better.

Service: 3/5
Environment: 3/5
Presentation: 4/5
Food Quality: 4/5
Food Quantity: 5/5
Price per person:$30-$60
