Review Hees Garden Seafood Restaurant - Auckland Central

Got the Grabone Peking duck for 2 for $46. Amazing deal, there was ALOT of duck for 2 people. Good tasting very meaty duck. The beansprout dish has a lot of Wok Hay and not too much MSG. The corn soup was very basic, so we chose not to drink it. Overall, pretty good meal. Toilet is a bit old and dirty and probably should get that refurbished.

Great tasting food here, theres something for everyone. This time round they we're much faster in service and everything was on point. Just have to try the prawn dumplings.

One of THE go to places for Yum Cha in Auckland! Authentic, prices are generally reasonable (ranging from $20 to $30 per pax) and quality of food has always been consistent. Lost of star would be due to overall service(wait times for tables/food) and frustration to find parking with seating being quite cramped. To Try's if you havent already: Beef tripe, chicken feet, fried yam

Nice to come back to Heed Garden Restaurant after 25 years later, great the owner running this famous restaurant for over 35 years, delivered so many delicious food.

Good peking duck. Was quiet when we went so service was quick. Left full good value.

One of the Best Asian restaurants in Auckland!! 😁 😋

Delicious and amazing. They were nice enough to accept a grab one voucher that expired in the lockdown. Super awesome service. Even changed the dish to accommodate my vegetarian son!

Food taste super good! Can taste the freshness from every dishes! The workers there are very friendly too, they will provide recommendations when you ask. It's the first and might be one of the best Chinese restaurant in Auckland. Not too busy during lunch hour :)

Great food. Busy restaurant. Range of clientel. Only one complaint and that is that there was too much onion used. The satay beef and sweet and sour pork were packed with onion. The duck with wraps and sauce was amazing. If you like roast duck this is a must try.

Nice fresh dumplings n quality taste. Staff are friendly n no time constraints especially that's what yum chai is about 😊. Reasonable price. Have tried other yum chai restaurants n disappointed with either time limited with booking allowed, extra charges for condiments, mass production with no quality taste or over price.

Delicious foods and very clean facilities, I enjoyed eating the Chinese foods they offer there. I think the staff were very friendly and clever, they can speak fluently in Chinese, Cantonese, and English. So don’t worry if you’re not too fluent, we all relate to that. The money is affordable, nothing too expensive. I hope everyone enjoys their time at Hee’s Garden Restaurant.

The food at yumcha was decent tasting it just comes out fresh which is always a nice when ordering yum cha however the servers always mixed up our order and the boss lady’s attitude towards my family was not the best. I understand chinese restaurant culture is loud but with even that taken into account the ambience was just bad

First yum cha in Auckland, here in Hees Garden, the foods was nice and yummy. The porridge a bit tasteless but still ok and all the other yum cha served hot which was very nice and yummy

The entree soup, the fresh fish (costing $80) and the fried pork were not warm enough (especially the former). When we asked the waitress to have the entre soup boiled up to a reasonable temperature, the waitress accepted and came back with a hot bowl of soup. The problem was, only the bowl was hot and the soup was still cool. I believe they must have microwaved it and I found it rather dishonest. I complained about it to the waitress again a she puffed her breath insubordinately out of impatience of our complaining, although I believed it was reasonable. The fried pork was full of MSG although well-fried, and the vegetable soup we ordered as a main tasted very bland. The fresh, newly slaughtered fish was good quality despite its temperature, although the flavouring could be improved making it juicier. The duck skin was decent but the complementary crackers we ordered were soggy. Also, the waitress did a poor job policing children running around the restaurant. The presentation of all the dishes was subpar except for the fish. I do like the paintings and decoration in the restaurant, however. On balance, there is nothing special about this restaurant as it is like any other Chinese restaurant. The food is not terrible but it is not good.

The place could be really busy therefore booking is a must. Their food is actually good but since we were seating right at the corner at the back, the trolley didn’t come much in our table. The staff may not be so friendly and approachable.

Came in for breakfast before our flight last month. Bread was super soft and custard was creamy. Buns weren’t too big so we were still able to order and try other stuff without being too full.

Came wed night, place was pretty empty. Below average service. Tiny Peking duck with rubbery pancakes and very watery sauce. The crispy pork belly was also rubbery. Most of the dishes were bland. I was very disappointed because I used to really like this place. The only good dish was the lamb rack in black pepper sauce. We ordered a lot of stuff but I forgot to take photos.
I got up to look for a waiter at one stage and couldn’t find anyone. Our dishes piled up all in the middle because no one took them away.
Unlikely to return.

Haven't been in a while. Food was nice but is more expensive than other Chinese restaurants we have been to recently. Had the duck, a pork dish and beef dish with Nasi Goreng.

Please find my complaint to the restaurant management as below. And didn't hear any reply!

Hi there

I'm writing in regards to the service I received today whilst dining in your restaurant today. I came here with grabone voucher for yumcha. One of the dishes included is fried tofu. I ordered it from the moment I was seated. I literally waited 1 hour and asked few different persons regarding my order. They kept telling me it's being prepared but obviously they lied for an hour cause I believed it should take less than 10 minutes to fry the tofu. The waitress did not allow me to substitute the tofu with other food that I ordered to compensate the value. I'll need to order a plate of new food which we are too full to consume and have to take away. Did not receive any apology in this instance after the long wait.

Secondly when I was paying at the counter, the manager did not have a good attitude. I was just enquiring why is the price $27? Cause I did not know how much it was for a dish. She answered blatantly "why not $27? The special dish is $6.50 each". I have never received such rude service in a restaurant. She could have explained to me in a courteous way how much each dish costs instead of talk back in that way by asking why not. Again no apology.

Although I came in with a voucher I deserve being treated the same with customer who didn't have voucher. Or that was the usual attitude towards customer with or without voucher? I bought the voucher intending to try out a new place but obviously I will neither come back nor recommend my friends and family to dine here.

I hope the management look into this aspect of staff in order to have sustainable growth in business.

Came here on a Saturday night with a grabone voucher for Peking Duck two ways. The first way is the classic Duck and pancakes and the second way is a stir fry with veges.
The voucher is for four people but we came with three and the pancakes are definitely only enough for two people. You can get extra pancakes at around $7?
The waitress was really rude as in more rude than usual at asian restaurants.
Overall, the food was tasty and at a reasonable price but I probably won’t be back here in a hurry.

Great authentic yum cha here. A hidden gem! The restaurant doesn’t look like much from the outside so I was skeptical but just walking through the doors, the smell bought me back to canton China. There is a lot of choice, the portion sizing is big and the food is delicious.

Had yumcha with fam at Hees today. The service was speedy and efficient and the food are of high quality! The yumcha items weren't very creative but they were executed quite well. Their lunch session also runs quite late as most of the items can still be made to order/or are available after we got there at around 2:30pm.

We have been at Hees many times for dinner never for dim-sum & we now had a go on a weekday. The many customers showed that it is still a popular Chinese restaurant in this area. Food-wise - with dim-sums, like steamed prawn dumplings, steamed BBQ pork buns - it is very ordinary. As far as I remembered, its dinners deserve a 3.5/5 rating.
(Food - 3/5; Service - 3.5/5; Ambience - 3/5)
Visited on 24 April 2018

Came here on Sunday with family at around 12. I was expecting to wait for a table for 6 people, but surprisingly we were seated right away as it wasn’t that busy yet.

The interior design will take to back to the traditional Chinese culture with the green roofed tiles and wooden-looking materials.

From medium to special dishes, we ordered a lot including prawn dumplings, chicken feet, squid, durian, vegetables, congee etc. Some yumcha has their own specialties and the specialties here are their beef stews and chicken feet stews; they’re amazingly flavorful.

The service varies from the waitresses as sometimes you’ll get bad service as they’ll just say ok or wait then ignore you. Other times you’ll get really good service and the waitress will bring the food right over to you. However, this is one of the better service yumchas I’ve been to.

The price was pretty good and reasonable; it’s more towards the expensive side for yumcha as it came to around $120.

Taste - 8/10
Size - 8/10
Price - 7/10
Service - 7/10
The Poor Foodie
First time coming to this restaurant and I was fascinated by the super Chinese decoration (even when I’m Chinese)
Came at 1pm on Sunday and waited for 15mins to get a tiny table for two of us. Perhaps it was because the peak hour was almost gone so we could get the seats quickly.
But the drawback was that there were less food presenting on the trolley and we had to order the dimsum (it’s the fun part when you can see what’s inside the bamboo steamer and pick the ones you love!)
We only had 6 dishes (prawn dumplings x2, siumai, rice roll, tofu roll (?) and sesame balls). Everything was piping hot and dumplings and siumai were absolutely yum.
I would say the wrapping for prawn dumpling and rice rolls was a bit too thick and sesame balls were super satieting.
Eventually we had to put the sesame balls in takeaway box because we were about to have food coma😂
Service was nice but the staff seemed not to be too good at English.

Came here on Saturday with family for yum cha before the crowd arrived. While I’m glad we beat the rush, the down side was that there wasn't a constant flow of food coming our way at this early hour of 11am.

Standout dishes were the siu mai (it was quite different to what we are normally used to, and was substantial) and the tripe (smaller and easier to eat; not too chewy). They also serve two different types of congee.

I found their service to be quite friendly. Overall, it’s a nice place to go if you’re in the neighbourhood – but I wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend it.

TLDR: great decoration and venue, disappointing service, average food.

Although I live close to this restaurant, it's never caught my eye, and I wouldn't have visited if it weren't for my boyfriend who suggested it. We had yumcha at this restaurant for lunch. Now, I'm not sure whether it's because we visited too early, but the staff seemed completely unprepared for customers.

It's a shame, as the venue and decoration is pleasant. It's a spacious restaurant that could easily be super busy and have better reviews if they put more effort into customer service and taste. I'm not a very picky eater, so yumcha typically doesn't vary that much in taste from place to place, but Hees Garden lacked so much in customer service that I hoped the food would make up for it. To say it was bad would be an overstatement, but it was extremely average - I would even go so far to say it was bland. The chicken feet were smaller in comparison to other restaurants, and the selection of food was disappointing.

Again, I may have just visited on an off day, or I was too early, but I've been to a lot of other yumcha restaurants within half an hour of their opening times, and I wasn't met with this sort of service. Wait staff's response times were very slow, and I think they forgot we were even there halfway during our meal. We waited to order more food, but there was literally nobody to be seen for 10+ minutes, so we paid our bill and left.

Best place to get a mean as feed of peking duck. Been a couple times and always leave satisfied, can usually find a voucher on grabone as well👍🏼👍🏼 I always end up ordering too much but all good . Still delicious and means taking home some for later

Been here for yum cha and dinner. Yum cha is generally very busy so make sure you called first. Their food are authentic and restaurant is spacious enough. Plenty of parking nearby. Really recommend their fish two ways (half salt&pepper and half stir fry with vege)

Dimsum is good and selection is varied. The fish congee is a favorite! I come here regularly and the ingredients are fresh. The staff is always friendly and helpful, and willing to accommodate special requests.

I like it here because they do not have time limit for yamcha or dimsum even on the weekends. It doesn't feel yamcha or relaxing at all when you were constantly being reminded that you have only 1 hour dining time, experience that I got from other yamcha restaurant. So when I was here I had a moment to really enjoy the food and my Sunday. Will come back again next time.

Would not recommend. Camr here with grabone voucher for 1 whole pecking duck. The size was small, as in it felt like 1/2 duck rather than 1 whole duck small, which isn't much of a surprise but the service was extremely poor. The wrap we got was cold and thick, the cucumber and spring onion was a measly amount. We ordered more wrap and veges for extra charge ($5) and this time the wrap was actually warm and we got much more veges than the first time.
Don't expect ant smiles or friendliness when ordering because that is not going to happen.
You might receive a different experience if you come without voucher but so far I can't say anything good.

I'm surprised this place doesn't have many reviews considering it's been in Mt Eden for so long . We've been coming here for the last 18 years and most of the time the food has been good .

Service is average usually understaffed and takes some time to get what you ask for.

Tonight we had the Peking duck, sizzling chicken, egg fried rice and 5 spice tofu. Food wasn't up to the usual standard, the fried rice had a lesser quantity and not enough salt. The sizzling chicken was brought out so hot that the oil was splattering everywhere attacking my arm, but the waitress didn't seem to care. 5 spice tofu wasn't on point today but last time it was absolutely delicious. The Peking Duck was good but only 9 pancakes for a whole duck wasn't sufficient and we had to pay $5 for 9 extra .

I would have given it a 3 tonight but because we've been here on way too many occasions and some have been great, I know it can be a bit hit and miss.

Been awhile since I last came here; as a kid my favourite part about the restaurant was the little waterfall/fountain at the entrance, it adds a really nice oriental touch to the restaurant. Interior decor is also decorated to mimic the traditional Chinese architecture, with its roof and tiling details.
In terms of dishes there's not that much to select from. Dishes are standard dim sums, albeit my favourite that I haven't seen anywhere else is the bamboo/tofu roll with pork, mushroom and water chestnut filling--got two of those. Portion was decent and the textures of the chestnuts, mushroom and pork worked really well with the slightly chewiness of the bamboo tofu skin around it. Would recommend!
Their siu mai is also well done! Size-wise it's bigger than some other restaurants and it comes in fours, not threes. Generous filling and good flavours. This place is also relatively cheaper than other yumcha restaurants of similar quality.

Price: 9/10
Food: 8/10
Ambience: 9/10
Service: 7/10
