Would probably give 3.5 if I had the choice. No real problems but nothing to rave about either. The restaurant is clean with plenty of parking. The food is on the slightly salty side but might be based on the dishes we chose. Food came out pretty quick, though oddly the vegetables and beer came out last. The dishes aren't fancy and I do feel like they use vegetables to make them seem bigger then they are.

JingAn Shanghai Restaurant is a very resonablely priced family restaurant, offering both dishes and individual meals.
Their Yang Chow fried rice is quite easily the best fried rice I've had in awhile. The rice is packed with flavour and offers a generous portion of prawns and chinese sausage. Although this is one of their pricier fried rice, it's definitely worth every penny, 5/5.
The Fried rice with salted fish and diced chicken is however a little bland and flavourless, I would not recommend this, 3/5.

I was very surprised by my visit to this what appears to be family owned restaurant. It doesn't seem like it's much from the outside but the food inside is delicious and very affordable for the portions you get. The tables have a inbuilt rotating platform to replace the typical lazy susans used in Chinese restaurants, which is a nice touch.

Deep fried chicken actually was quite nice beyond my expectation, it's different to the normal La Zi Chicken, which has bones. This dish is more like salt pepper spicy chicken fillet, very tender. Steam buns are our family's favourite, the main reason of keeping come back to this restaurant.

Had dinner there on Father's Day. I agreed with other reviews that food are pretty bland. I ordered a Peking duck and was very disappointed. It was tiny( hence the cheaper price I guess vs other restaurants) and the meat tasted very bland. It is more like a steam duck. Also i don't believe they used the proper Peking sauce. Rest of the dishes were just ok. I think the only positive thing from this meal was the waitress that took our orders was very friendly and attentive.

The food here is mainly average. The grilled beef ribs with pineapple and capsicum had a nice flavour. There were some ham pieces in addition to the cured meat in the 芥兰腊肉 which I wasn’t very happy about as the dish name on the menu says 腊肉 (cured meat). They didn’t have 芥兰 (gai lan) so they asked us if using 菜心 (choi sum) instead was okay, which we were totally fine with but I just don’t like how they used ham pieces in this dish.

The food are delicious,but the service is poor. Especially for the old lady, I called them in advanced to order takeaway in order to save time. After 20 mins, I got there and she said they had run out of pork rids, so I had to choose another meal. This spent me almost 15 mins waiting in the resturant. This issuse happened twice already. <br/>I also had a bad dine in experience here. Last time, I got there to have dinner at 5:30pm. There weren't many customers in the resturant. We ordered our dishes at 5:35, but it took almost 30 mins to get ready. We just ordered two dishes. The old lady was just cared about the phone order and online order. When I got the rice from her, the first dish was already cold. The second dish came maybe 20 mins later.

Very bad customer service, I have bought takeaways many times from Jing An but tonight I am very disappointed. Someone answered my phone and took my order, then when I picked up they said they didn't receive my order. The man accused me to ring a wrong number and asked me to show my phone. I said I called using my landline and I was sure that I had called the right phone number. After long talk, a customer who was eating stood up and admitted he was the one who took my order and didn't give my order to the chef. They didn't apologise, they were not nice and it's hard to speak English with them.

Late writing this but fabulous food, excellent service from really lovely staff. We have only tried the lemon chicken and sweet and sour pork so far. Both are worth walking over burning coals for!! Can’t wait to go back!!!

As a Shanghainese, I will say the dishes are quite original Shanghai taste once you know which ones are typically right ones to order. Shanghainese like crabs, river shrimps been done in a delicate way. I will recommend. Good job.

Xiao long bao was not taste good, the skin was different from the original Shanghai, easily broken, looks like the prepackaged one. The triple rice was ok. I think they are not authentic Shanghai food.

Came in the morning with my partner. Lady was nice enough to let us in despite being 5 minutes early. Both the old lady that served us and the gentleman who helped us with the pay did not speak any English at all. They didn’t even try to speak English when we did the order and continued to speak Chinese as an answer. Not that they must speak English in New Zealand at all times, but it was really weird to see them doing business & serving customers in New Zealand and only speaking Chinese. Had lunch today using zomato gold. We ordered 6 dishes - none of them disappointed. We especially enjoyed the braised large meatballs. 2x juicy meatballs served with rice - so flavourful and they were huge! Serving portion is generous and service was friendly too. Plagued by reminiscence and homesickness, tried this pan fried crab with rice cake and soybean. It was about a decade ago when last time Dad cooked it at home.<br/>This is one signiture dish in Shanghai and region closeby. I cannot tell whether chef in Jing An executed it authentically enough, but it is divine to my pallet. Maybe it is a dish so close to heart.<br/>The crab flesh itself is packed with flavour. For every bite, the delicacy of seafood is intertwined with good amount of seasoning, including sweetness, which all contributed to how succulent and flavourful the ricecake is. Soybean adds extra texture and serves as nice garnish on the plate.<br/>We also ordered a braised mince ball with bai choy on rice from lunch menu. The size of meatball is just enormers!<br/>My husbad works closeby and feedback from their colleagues in respect to Jing An is not unanimously positive. But these two dishes will not let you down. And suppose other traditional Shanghainess cuisine on menu would be on the safe side. :) Will definitely be back.<br/>

We were a table of 10, got 8 dishes and spent $87 bucks. Probably one of the best Shanghainese restaurants I've been to in Auckland. Flavours were not excessively sweet and everything had a clean wholesome taste to it. The spicy dishes had bite and the soups were delicious. The beef dish was so tender it reminded me of sizzling venison while the braised pork stole my heart.<br/>Zomato gold is amazing!

I love their roast duck coz it's fresh made. So every time when you want to eat the roast duck, call to booking two hours in advance before you go. You can pretty much eat them whole!<br/><br/>You can also preorder the Peking duck (need to preorder 2 hours before arrival for them to prep)<br/><br/>The abalone shark fin soup is amazing too, I believe they use non endangered species so that’s a good sign. Something special and out of the ordinary. <br/><br/>Drunken chicken was very tasty too. The jelly fish was ok but could to with a bit more flavouring. <br/><br/>The dishes we had were all very enjoyable. Highly recommended, don’t think if it as a Shanghainese restaurant. Hate that I had to give a bad review but if 3 out of 3 dishes that we ordered and none of them are even just okay what can I do. Savoury and crispy duck is the worst, you can hardly eat it because it was extremely salty. Beef and coriander soup was so plain just like bland noodle soup. Braised beef was like have been made many days ago. There were many selection in their menu but our first try has stopped us from coming back again.

Busy Shanghai restaurant that is always packed with people regardless of what time you come - it's definitely best to make a booking before going there to avoid disappointment! They have very fast service and the food that they serve are absolutely delicious and super authentic! I love the tofu noodle soup and the vegetable fried rice. The fish, tofu and duck dishes are all very tasty! I'd love to go back and try their more carby dishes such as the glutinous fried rice cake and siu mai :)

I thought this was a shanghai restaurant serving shanghai food, not some sort of Beijing or really up north Chinese food. i had the sweet and sour pork on rice. It was not sweet and sour at all instead it taste exactly like fermented bean curd. The dan dan noodle didnt had that peanut sesame flavor in it and so many star anise in it yuck! The boiled fish and chilli is alright tho. But in general this is not a authentic shanghai style restaurant, If your from north china i guess you'll like it very much, but for south china and foreigner, i strongly reckon stay AWAY FROM THIS restaurant. It will be the least pleasant experience about shanghai food.

Came here with a friend for dinner. Ordered the 2 course Peking duck with salt pepper fried duck. Soy sauce braised pork belly and griddle cooked cauliflower. Overall experience absolute below average. Peking duck came out in a different layout than it normally would, all the meat and skin was separated. Though it seemed the portion size was quite generous, the peking duck flavour was not there. I would go as far to say that it was more like roast duck. The braised pork was tasty but reeked of the unpleasant porky scent, which probably meant it wasn't prepared properly. The cauliflower was the most disappointing. A few sprigs of stale looking cauliflower added with puny cuts of Chinese sausage, definitely not worth what it costs. Overall experience is below average. Won't be returning.

I hate giving bad reviews but being Shanghainese myself, this food is very in-authentic. They serve many different Shanghainese dishes but they just don’t quite hit the mark. <br/>The only thing they could be redeemed on is the 南瓜饼 (glutinous pumpkin rice cake) which on two occasions was raw in the centre...<br/>In all honesty would avoid this place as much as possible.<br/>The 2 star is really only because I received decent service and the decor was nice.

A mediocre Shanghai style restaurant. We ordered xiaolong bao and wenton soup. The skin of xiaolong bao was so fragile that broken easily and wonton was tasteless. Our hope for nice lunch dashed. It has nice ambience, only thing I can say as good point.

I am a big lover of Shanghainese food so I had high expectations for this restaurant.<br/><br/>Service: 3/10<br/>When we were ordering as a big group the lady seemed annoyed to have to stay there and take our order. She also wasn’t very happy about us ordering extra food after awhile. The food took quite a long time for everything to be served. <br/><br/>Food: 7/10<br/>There is quite a large selection on the menu. The soup dumplings didn’t have soup inside which was quite disappointing. The duck was really good and served quite beautifully, the skin was crispy while the inside was tender. The sweet sour pork was crunchy and nicely fried. The pork belly was super fatty and oily and full of flavour.<br/><br/>Ambiance: 7/10<br/>It’s just like a typical basic Chinese restaurant where there are a bunch of customers yelling and cheering. The tables are quite unique the decorations make the restaurant feel quite traditional.<br/><br/>I wouldn’t say it’s the worst but it’s definitely not the best. I probably won’t be coming back since there are a lot of other chinese restaurants in the area.

I understand it started business not too long ago.<br/><br/>As for the food, they looked quite different from the pictures in the menu. So could be a <br/>bit deceiving. Generally the food was tasty, not fantastic. Just simple dishes. A bit <br/>disappointed with the pork dish. There were more vegetables than meat. The bun was <br/>supposed to be eaten with the lamb dish.<br/><br/>The cold dish was quite good and the dessert was normal. <br/><br/>As for service, just as expected.

I edited my review as the last two times I was here, the food tasted good, but not amazing. The Peiking duck was not as good as the Peiking duck from other places, the pancakes were a bit disappointing and they separated the skin from the duck for some reason. If coming here I'd recommend foods that Shanghai is famous for, not other dishes like Peiking duck or meatballs.

Which was like after we had all of our food and we were really full, we had still to sit there for the duck?????we went to ask cancel the duck order but restaurant manager was like "please sit there and wait for it ,we'll present you the best duck" not only saying but it was the best duck.<br/>Seems like because of one of the waiter served our duck to another table so that kitchen had to make a new one for us.<br/>Other dish was just average, fish dish was not really pleasant, taste raw fish and stinky, after we gave the manager to taste, he was saying that's what it should be like.....WTF?????

Very bad service from one <br/>of the waitress, short haired tomboy looking one. We arrived and she told us to wait for a little while as one of the table was going to be free soon, and a lady after us was told that she need to wait for about 20min as we were in front of them. However when the table we were waiting for became free the waitress told us that someone just called and booked that table. We were really pissed off because of this, no one told us we had someone before us when we walked in, five person waiting for 10min+ and got told they won't serve us. An older waitress argued for us, telling the younger waitress that we came before the phone call and led us to the table. Just after we sat down, the customers who "booked" the table came and asked why they didn't have a table, the younger waitress directed the customers to argue with the older waitress. This is the part that pissed us off even more, the younger waitress did not even try to solve the issue but directed the other customers to argue with the waitress that stood us for us. It is pretty obvious that the customers who called knew the younger waitress, and were probably her friends. We were basically kicked out because of the waitress own fault.
