Review Lai Thai Bistro - Auckland Central

Took a chance and was pleasantly surprised at the overall experience. Lovely food, lovely service, lots of choices, all at a great price! They were really busy, but waitresses were so polite and were working as fast as they could. Will definitely be going back.

We visited for our wedding anniversary and chose dine-in. We had the Satay chicken skewers Entree (the fresh homemade Satay sauce is so good), the Special grilled Lamb Rack (the lamb was soft and very tasty and the sauce just made the dish) we also had Pad Thai with Squid that was similarly yummy. We had the Three rains mocktail. The wait staff were attentive, took our order efficiently and refilled our water glasses without having to be asked, a small detail that is surprisingly absent from most restaurants we have visited recently. We very much enjoyed our experience here and we will be visiting again soon.

This is our go to place for a quick work lunch. They have a quite a nice selection on their lunch menu. Would highly recommend the green curry and chicken in cashew nuts. The food is incredibly tasty!

Lovely service, tidy place, well priced and quite a different taste to most other Thai places. Really neat spot.

Amazing experience, beautifully presented meals, stunningly authentic tastes and the service was very very friendly, our new favorite, wish I could give more stars!
life is good
Delicious sweet and sour whole snapper. Fresh pineapple, crispy skin, they even cut off the meat from both sides of the fish and place it on the top. Lamb rack was also good.

One of our favourite Thai restaurants in Auckland. We used to visit regularly when we were still living in Avondale. We recommend their money bag and curry dishes. Their duck curry is fantastic. There are car parks at the back if the ones on the main road are all filled up.

Yummy authentic Thai.

Tasty and well cooked food. We had the Thai fried rice, Drunken noodles and Chicken cashew nut as Takeaways. Texture was great, well cooked and tasty. On the sweeter side which I like. The food was not spicy so would recommend asking for more heat if you want. Great weeknight meal. 3 items is plenty for 2 people :)

Perfect...I’m very fussy, we’ve eaten at pretty much all the good restaurants around New Lynn recently and the meal I had tonight was the best out of all of them. The others were good too...but the sizzling beef with the special sauce is something else.
Nicole
I ordered from here as a treat for my birthday. I've had bad Thai before... but I struggle to remember worse food than this. Mainly flavourless, with some disgusting thrown in. Both overcooked in some places, and undercooked in others. A truly terrible meal, we spent 90 dollars for 4 people and it really put a damper on the day. At your own risk kids.

Fantastic eatery, have been eating here for over 5 years now and cannot get enough of this place. The staff are lovely and food is simply delicious. Very authentic and great ambience.

Just picked up our take away, can't really comment on the food just yet. Just after placing the order at the counter, we were asked to wait outside despite 4 tables free at that time. So I said' R u throwing us out and the guy who took the order acknowledged and with no reactions said again- Wait outside. It's more to do with how he said rather then what he said. Waited out in the hot weather patiently and go check in on the order again - he goes yeah it's coming wait outside. A restaurant is suppose to make you feel welcome and make you feel comfortable. Never visiting this place again even if the food is good.

Food is the best. Always consistent. Beautiful flavors, amazing selections. It is our most favorite place to eat out. Lovely & clean, staff are fantastic. We've been coming here for at least 10 years and it is always delicious & a lovely dinner out.

I rang tonight and made the mistake of thinking they delivered. I got a lovely woman on the phone telling me she would make an exception and deliver to us as we were close by. The food turned up quickly and hot! We loved the food and the flavours. The ingredients are fresh and just enough spice. I am keen to check out the restaurant. I'm so thankful for the amazing service we received tonight !

Got takeaways from here on New Year's Eve. The food was absolutely delicious. We ordered number 37 and 22. Both were seafood - the prawns were so plump and juicy and the fish was so fresh. Both dishes were full of fresh vegetables and the Thai flavours were perfectly balanced. Number 22 was the yummiest - we will try with the beef next time. Can't wait to return!
Food was tasty but very overpriced for West Auckland compared to a lot of other Thai restaurants I have eaten at in Auckland. We were a table of 6, 5 adults & 1 child. My daughter only ate the entree of chicken skewers with peanut sauce, & we had 3 entree's shared between the 5 adults. The prawn skewers with peanut sauce (entree) were tasty. We all ordered different mains, my partner ordered the snapper with tamarind sauce at $29, although the tamarind sauce was nice, my partner was dissapointed that he couldn't taste the snapper as it over powered it. The snapper was undersized too, another dissapointment. If I had of been fishing it would have been one that I would throw back into the sea being that it wasn't 35cms. My red curry was nice but could have done with more chicken & veges, pretty standard of a red curry, have had better. All up dinner was $300!! (Lucky it wasn't me paying) It seemed overcharged at $50 per person, considering we shared 3 entrees between 5 of us, & had 1 main each between the 5 of us, as my daughter only had an entree as a main meal. Plus we had 1 beer each. I wondered if the bill had been calculated right? Not sure if I'd go back there as have had cheaper & just as tasty. Service was standard, nothing special. Timing of food was fine.

A tad pricey considering the area, however a good experience overall. Good menu and nice fast service. Wine list could be improved but good "wine of the house" options

Great takeaway meal, pad Thai was beautiful and fresh, ginger chicken was fantastic, nice touch of lemongrass, and Penang curry was excellent. Will be back again.

- I've eaten from plenty of Thai joints and this place is average
- A tad over priced
- Food tasted a little bland
- If you need some Thai and in the area, it's fine, but out of towners can find far better elsewhere

Absolutely love the beef salad from here, best in town. Always friendly, although their prices are a little over what we normally like for takeaways, we never regret it.

Such a hidden jem in New Lynn. Great service and yummy food. Just the right portion in my opinion because I really hate walking out of the restaurant feeling bloated. This is a place you should go if you are a local as you don't need to drive all the way to Ponsonby or anywhere like far away to get the Thai food and not to mention, you can easily find parking around the area and it's not too crowded since it's New Lynn.

We got a green curry and chicken stir fry with oyster sauce. The vegetables were crunchy and flavoured nicely and I really can't find much to complain about the food. I also noticed in some other Thai restaurants they either put waay too much carrot, onion or celery but this was not the case. They had a good balance of meat and vegetable.

The whole environment of the restaurant was comfortable. Even though the place was decorated in a fancy manner there was a feeling you could just relax, almost like you were at home.

The service was quick and efficient. We stayed there for about an hour or two and we had waitresses and waiters asking us if we needed any more rice or if the meal was good.

Must visit if you are a thai food fan in the local.

Consistently high quality food, fun service and always fresh. Salads and curries are definitely highlights. One of our local favourites and there's a reason why we keep coming back again and again.

This is our go to place for Thai food in West Auckland. The food is amazing! Never once have we had a bad meal and we have been going to Lai Thai for around 4 years now. The staff are so very friendly. And the owner is such a lovely man who always likes to come down for a chat. Highly recommended!
William Whelan
Wow. This will now be our go to Thai Place. We only had takeaway but will take the family in for a sit down meal. Very friendly. Curry was amazing and the hot beef dish. No leftovers at all. Lost a little mark for standard rice.
Arek Zywot
Great Thai restaurant with a very friendly staff.
Tried the seafood menu other day and the prawbs were great as well as an ice cream dessert with strawberries and orange liquor sauce.
Ulrich Frerk
Great food as always. Tom yum to die for, not to mention the great service. The owners often come around later with liqueurs. Melissa Pond

Quite simply the best Thai in Auckland.

Well worth the trip to New Lynn just for the fried rice!

Our favourite Thai by a country mile.

If you are wanting good Thai with great friendly service then Lai Thai is the place to visit.

I visited the restaurant last year since I have moved to the area. I was pleased that there are a few South East Asian restaurants in New Lynn. The setting and atmosphere was not that great. The food and service was not as good as I expected. I was quite disappointed. The prices are also quite high for the amount and quality of food you get. I really don't mind the high amount of prices to pay if it was worth it and I enjoyed it. I have been to so many Thai Restaurants and think it was not that great. The waiter was slow and didn't acknowledge us for quite a long time, the food took a while to come out. When it finally did, the food came out like it was a takeaway eatery. Don't think I would like to go back.

I have been here more times than I could count and have loved it every single time! I would never hesitate to recommend to anybody. Amazing food in a authentic venue with lovely staff who go the extra mile for customers. The staff are Thai and really know their stuff. They also accommodate very well to children! Fantastic job guys
Gina
The worst Thai food I have ever had. The smell of the food was so bad. We ordered cashew chicken and how can you get this easy dish wrong. The veggies were gross and cashew was burnt. Very annoyed because we spent $30 on take-outs and you expect it to be good. Also 4x money bags for $8 is overpriced and it was burnt.

Loved our dinner here.

The food was outstanding, hot and full of flavour, service was faultless and the staff were lovely and friendly and nothing seemed to be an issue.

Highly recommend, we will certainly be going back!

I've eaten at Lai Thai often and have been very amiss in not singing their praises sooner.

The food feels clean and fresh, and even better is delicious. The atmosphere is always upbeat and cheerful, with friendly staff who obviously know their home countries food very well. The restaurant is attractive and clean, with nice restrooms.

When I've ordered food for takeaway it too has always been equally tasty, with ample portions.

It's a treat to eat there and I always look forward to it. Relatives have been regular visitors too and have always recommended it, and I agree wholeheartedly.

RJW

We went here for dinner a few nights ago and I have to say, we found it very disappointing.

The food was average and the portion size ludicrously small for the extravagant price we paid for it. Not only that, but we were charged an extra two dollars EACH for the tiny turret of rice that came out with our meals.

All in all, we felt we were overcharged for the paltry amount of food we received. $22 for a green curry with rice is, quite frankly, ridiculous.

There are 3 Thai restaurants within short walking distance of each other and we frequent all 3. What made our decision last night to go to Lai Thai was ultimately the knowlefge wed get attentive but unobtrusive service and a relaxed and refined environment with beautiful fresh Thai cuisine. Our expectations and hopes were more than met and we will be back.

B E A U T I F U L ! I went in, having never been there before, was greeted with a friendly smile and was made feel very welcome (even though I was in barefeet!). Ordered a green curry to take away, was ready within 10 minutes, and brought to my car where I was waiting outside. Got home, dug in and was seriously impressed at the quality of the food - So impressed, I called and told the manager.
A huge thanks to the staff and management of Lai Thai, I will definitely be back and will spread the word!

We had dinner here last night. There was a big wait between courses and the head waiter seemed very tired or maybe unwell. overall though the food was nice, Gavin gave us complimentary ports as usual and a pen and birthday card to our 89 year old mum. The toilets are nice providing hand cream is a nice touch. Will be back again

My family and I recently celebrated my son's 16th birthday at Lai Thai. The food was amazing, the service fantastic. Gavin presented my son with a card and a very nice pen and there were ports all round. The restaurant was clean, the toilets lovely . The staff were very friendly - even teaching us how to make some decorative carrots! With so many Thai restaurants popping up, it was nice to go local and realize you don't have to go any further. Thanks for a great night. We'll be back.

Had takeaway recently. Pad Thai and chicken satay sticks.
Was short changed when I paid (only $1, so no big deal)
Asked if the pad Thai was chicken and they confirmed. Actually, it was prawn, and they were over cooked. Wasn't the nicest pad Thai.
On the other hand, the satay sticks were amazing! And the service was spectacular.

I'll go back, but wouldn't recommend the pad Thai.

This is such a great place to dine. I was there tonight with a group to celebrate my mother's 85th Birthday. Gavin, the owner, made it very special by presenting her with a lovely card and a glass of port. The food was excellent - the quiet, friendly atmosphere is a rarity in Auckland these days. The hand cream, flowers in the bathroom are a wonderful touch. I noticed the kitchen is highly organised and very clean and tidy. Thanks for a great venue - shall visit again very soon.

I have been eating the food at Lai Thai for over 10 years on a regular basis and the food is outstanding. They get their ingredients daily and you can really taste the freshness. I always really look forward to eating a meal made by the chefs at Lai Thai and whenever I have visitors I get the takeaways from Lai Thai for them. The food is really excellent. The service is also great and everyone receives personal attention and care. I definitely recommend this restaurant.

We have visited this restaurant for lunch or dinner over many years. The food is very good, and the restaurant feels like a family run pleasant place. For good, well presented Thai cuisine at a good price point, good service (the principal waiter has been here for years), and I like the friendly "old guy" that may come out to see how you are going. His younger thai wife is the senior chef and the tastes are lovely pure Thai. Recommended.

Third time at Lai Thai and yes the food is exceptional and in a better class than other Thai restaurants I've been to in Auckland,... When it eventually arrives that is!

The last two times we have been we waited for around 45 minutes to get simple entrés - and then another 30-40 minutes for the next course. The first time the place was busy but last night there were only three tables in use!

They seem more focused on serving takeaways that looking after people in the restaurant.
Both times the (charming) owner gave the excuse of being one person down in the kitchen. Added to this, the head waiter last night seemed to be on medication he was moving so slowly. I think they are just understaffed to serve both the restaurant AND do the takeaways.

It's a shame that we won't be going back because the food is so good. Sort it out Lai Thai!
Andrea Trapp
Food and service great. However, totally overpriced when it comes to the starters for $12 !!!
We have been going to this restaurant for years, we have always enjoyed the food and have seen the prices slowly creeping up. $12 starters for this restaurant are over the to though.

I should start by saying that I have eaten real Thai food in Thailand and was horrified by the food and service here. What a terrible restaurant! Rung up to arrange to bring a 60th birthday cake and was initially told no. Ordered vegetarian spring rolls as an entree @ $12 for FOUR TINY spring rolls with nearly no filling, and a "spicy tofu and vegetable curry" @ $18 which turned out to be half cooked vegetables in a CLEAR SOUP! Returned it and ordered the peanut satay instead, which was exactly the same half cooked tofu and nearly raw vegetables in a cheap white bowl. Disgusted at how a restaurant can charge these prices and deliver the food and service these guys are. As for the port the others mentioned??? We didn't get any, and we were there celebrating a 60th birthday with only close family.

'Peter James' what r u? a spy for the restaurant down the road? You've given unfair ratings to people who i've been very happy with. At the least i'd say you're way too fussy, but i think its more than that. Please don't read his comment!
Anyway I've eaten here 3 times now with my oldies who visit Thailand all the time. If anyone would grumble, it would be them. They didn't. They really liked the food here. Service is good, ambiance is nice. Don't know what that loser was going on about!

I don"t know where Gina comes from as her experience is so different from ours and that of the friends that have joined us at Lai Thai, some from other parts of New Zealand or overseas. As with us they have often eaten at other Thai restarants and love to eat at Lai Thai. When we discuss where to eat we are given little option but to take them there. We go there two or three times a month for lunch or dinner and have done so for about 15 years. We have never had a bad meal there, the staff cheerful and service is excellent. It is always possible to find cheaper food elsewhere in New Lynn but we prefer to enjoy what we are eating rather than merely fill our stomaches and we hope the restaurant will be there for many years to come.
Bill and Verna

Ate at Lai Thai last night for about the 20th time. If it was at all possible the food (which was already exceptional) has got better. My wife and I have eaten at many thai restaurants all over New Zealand, and have never found a thai restaurant which would even come close to the fantastic food, outstanding service and lovely warm atmosphere. Gavin and Pog have always been wonderful hosts and extremely welcoming. Peter James wouldn't know good food if it jumped up and bit him on the arse. This is definitely a 5 star restaurant.

My partner and I have been to this restaurant a few times, we returned after the first time because the complimentary port was a lovely touch. But each time after that, we've tried something different on the menu and enjoyed it. We're fans and would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for - great food, quick and efficient service and a lovely chat with the owner who is anything but a boring old man!!!
Daniel Feenstra
I went here for a birthday lunch with my partner last week. We have eaten Thai all around the world, but this food really was outstanding. The owners Pog and Gavin introduced themselves as they were eating lunch at the next table, while being entertained by their friendly wine sales rep. I liked what I saw them eating and jokingly requested the lunch menu items they were eating! Pog kindly got up in the middle of her lunch, came over to our table, discussed what we should eat, and went and made us the special peanut prawn kebabs I had earlier spied. She actually made them herself.....(even though there was obviously a chef in the kitchen).....meantime her husband Gavin popped back and forwards offering us some wines too sample from the wine reps suggestions. We were extremely well cared for, left satisfied with absolutely delicious Thai food and gracious hosts.
Highly recommend.

Daniel

The Lai Thai restaurant has in my opinion the very best Thai food I have ever eaten - anywhere, including Thailand. The food is always very fresh, freshly prepared, and the kitchen spotless. This is what makes good Thai food excellent.

I have spoken to the owner several times and he shops daily for produce, even meats. Any chicken not consumed that day is eaten by the staff or thrown out. How many restaurants can say they do that? They would never pre-cook their meats like other Thai restaurants to save a few minutes cooking time, and yes all these details really do matter if you care about good food.

I have been to Thailand 38 times in eight years, and I travel and dine out frequently so these comments are qualified.

Admittedly the quality of the food here way outshines the 90's decor, but the ambiance is good and the surroundings pleasant and acceptable.

Being a small dining room, the service is prompt and thoughtful from experienced Thai staff.

Of particular strength on the menu are the stir fry's and the curries. The lunch special is superb value for money and the portion sizes the same as dinner service.
Tracey Smith
I have been here once for lunch and thought it was quite good, but went back for dinner almost a year later and was sorely disappointed. You pay downtown prices in grubby New Lynn (actually even more expensive than places in town) for very average Thai food (and I have eaten at a lot of Thai restaurants). Even though we requested extra spicy, the food was barely spicy and had bland flavours. I wouldn't go back.
Angela Burnside
This is a small but comfortable restaurant with a good atmosphere. The staff were welcoming and the service was good as was the food - which was mild for Thai but I'm sure if you wanted things spiced up I'm sure they'd oblige. The complimentary port was a nice way to finish the evening, we'll be back!
C
Absolutely fantastic restaurant. We go there all the time for takeaways and to dine in and the food and service is superb. Highly recommend this restaurant. A+++ rating i think

This is our favourite local eatery. Gavin and Pog are wonderful hosts. They always cook the food the way we like it - sometimes we feel like extra chilli and they are happy to oblige. The food is fresh and I can recommend the whole snapper in tamarind and sweet chilli sauce. Everyone loves to chat to Gavin and enjoy his hospitality (including the free glass of port). Many of the clientele are regulars who've been dining there for years. Pog also does the lovely flower arrangements. It's nice to eat somewhere where they still have tablecloths and carpet on the floor and no banquette seating where you're sitting elbow to elbow with those at the next table where you can't avoid hearing everything being said.

Although I used to live close by for many years, I never made it to this restaurant. Now I regret that! Having eaten there recently, even though I had to drive a little further to go there - I would definitely recommend this restaurant. Food wise, I would describe it as being city quality in the suburbs. A little cosy inside, but then a full restaurant is a good restaurant! I will be back!
