Review Island Gelato Company - Auckland

Sarah Bjørndal
Very cute place with nice staff and great variety of gelato flavours. We tried the sour cherry & rich chocolate (NZ’s best) and it was amazing!
Trotting Horse
Very smooth, creamy gelato with interesting flavours. I enjoyed my peanut butter caramel especially with the caramel brittle. Very lovely stop in the village.

We've loved Island Gelato Company for many years, both on Waiheke and Auckland CBD. Thank you for all the effort put into the presentations on each icecream which really meet our needs for beauty and delicious food, as well as fun for our family. We've experienced only excellent friendly caring service. We're grateful for your company and the contribution you make to the community. Current delicious flavours and prices and in the pictures below.

The gelato was very tasty and reminiscent of the gelato we’ve had in Italy. The staff was also very friendly (even helped us out by calling a taxi to take us to the ferry when our US phone wasn’t cooperating)! Highly recommend stopping here to satisfy your sweet tooth while you’re on Waiheke!

There were three of us. The service was great. The gelato was amazing, however they didn't have any lemon flavor. The chocolate flavors and the vanilla bean was great. The strawberry was okish, a little on the tart side.
Ben Hammond
Loved it. The rich chocolate was amazing. Super friendly service too!
Lynette Dersley
The ice-cream was fantastic and the service was superb and the staff very friendly. Even brought my waterbottle that I forgot in the shop when paying, outside to me.
Isabella Clague
Always fresh and interesting flavours, especially love the coffee ones!
Jae Park
Good variety of flavors, some of which are fairly unique. Just be careful with chocolate flavors as it seems to melt very fast compared to other flavors.
Errol Garry
Quick breakfast on the run tasty bacon & egg bun quick service 😋

AMAZING gelato. Lots of delicious vegan flavours including a black forest and mint with chocolate truffle. Most other places you go the vegan options are just a lemon sorbet or something boring but these guys had some many delicious options. They are generous with their testers and very friendly service.

Best place to grab ice-cream on a hot day in Waiheke! Big variety of flavours to select from and I am confident that not one will disappoint! Will be back for sure

Really good ice cream but maybe the price is too high.
Raj Dee
Awesome place with good gelato. My only ding here is it’s overpriced.
Pamela Christie
It was pretty hard to choose as there were so many yummy sounding flavours. Peppermint Chocolate is an absolute favorite tho and this one was delicious.
Mitchell Bidois
A perfect refresher in between daytime activities. The mint chocolate chip was definitely a winner and if I get to go back again I think the pineapple mojito will likely be the one to try. I go for the cone every time but if you’re in the middle of summer the a cup might be more advisable to contain the drippage.

Super-cute shop, super-tasty gelato! (I recommend the Biscoff Tiramisu flavor.)

Popular Ice Cream in Waiheke Island. A lot of people buying this. But for me as an Asian, it didn't suitable with my taste.

Yummo! Great variety of flavours, delicious gelato and wonderful staff make this a great place to stop, relax and enjoy the beautiful Island of Waiheke.

Waiheke gold! Best damn gelato you'll taste anywhere. The flavours, inspired by seasonal fresh fruits and ingredients make every day exciting - with new surprises for you to take your tastebuds on a journey. These guys understand service with plenty of smiling faces to ensure you get that waiheke gold in no time at all. Happy Days!

Excellent gelato, excellent service, excellent staff. We have never had anything but good service. I had to write this review as the recent complaints are totally unreasonable as we know all the staff as we are there nearly every day for coffee (can't do gelato everyday!) We are so lucky to have you on Waiheke. Ignore the plebs. 26 reviews 5 stars 4 reviews 1 star Make your own call people.

Wow, flavours blew us away. We decided on a take home pack, and it was so well done, peach and tarragon, cherry macadamia and salted caramel white chocolate. I was also offered some cones to take back too. Great service, awesome ingredients, will come again. A #mustdo at Waiheke.

Crap Service! First time on Waiheke Island & first time at this store, put off! Who wants to eat ice cream after receiving a crap service! And how can u enjoy an ice cream if u can't taste it? Whats the point of having your tasting service there if your going 2 be told you can't taste more flavors? I didn't like the 3 i tasted, so I said forget it! Take my money somewhere else! Sydney tourist come for the first time, what an experience! I will pass this on to everyone & anyone who visits this island! -

Hi, I simply didn't like the Gelato, I have had much better elsewhere. Also I found the staff preoccupied, inattentive and due to this a little rude
Jodi Stewart
Absolutely delicious. Mocha and white chocolate cheesecake with thyme. #scrumdiddlyumptious.Another reason to love Waiheke Island.#gelatoislandstyle

Would fly back to Auckland just to eat more of this delicious ice cream!

Had a fantastic experience at Island Gelato today. The lady serving me was so enthusiastic about the product and suggested different flavours really trying to maximise the experience for me as a new customer. She is a brilliant saleswoman and knows how to engage her customer. Also, the flavours are delicious. But to nsme a specific one (based on her suggestions, the Fei Jao (sp??) is awesome. I’m just waiting for the Fei Jao crumble served with your ice cream. Thank you for the perfect end to my day

Their cream cheese and jam bagels are the best, had to go back for seconds

Once you have had Island Gelato you will NEVER go back to others. The Waiheke plum and Tamarillo are simply the biggest taste sensation out!!!!! Staff are the best....coffee incredible. Love love

A long weekend at Waiheke just isn't complete without an Island gelato or 4. Fave flav this long weekend - salty caramel ....or was it the cherry mascarpone... so hard to choose...all delicious
Karina
Had ice cream here when we were at Waiheke. Every-time we drove past it was super busy so we decided to try it out. I got a scoop of the almond chocolate and a scoop of lime coconut. I really liked the almond chocolate because it was made of almond milk but wasn't a fan of the lime coconut so gave it to my friend. Overall was good but not amazing so don't see the whole buzz about the line? Would like to try some of their other flavours though.

Love this place honestly, best gelato on waiheke island. Service is very good, the seating is really cute and the gelato tastes amazing. Definitely come here if your on waiheke you won’t regret it!

Completely overwhelmed by the sheer number of people lining up, the area isn’t large enough to view the flavors properly which is a bit of a hindrance.
My sister got a double scoop of vanilla and brownies and cream. The vanilla was just a classic vanilla with vanilla beans spots speckled over and tasted very ‘clean’. However not too special.
The brownies and cream were an interesting surprise, I thought it would be a typical chocolate flavor but the chocolate was not overpowering and it wasn’t extremely sweet. Tastes like a chocolate milkshake. The brownie pieces were squishy and surprising tasty with an odd (but good) bouncy texture. Wasn’t too sweet either and went well with the icecream. Loved that it didn’t taste like soggy cake pieces.
Scoop sizes were just the average size and cost is typical, what you’d expect of those ‘indie’ ‘trendy’ ice-cream dessert places. Paid $8.50 for a double scoop on cone.
7.5/10
Personally if it were up to me I’d get more interesting flavors such as the plum or raspberry jelly infused.

Very unique flavours. I wanted to try them all without looking greedy. Definitely one of the best and original flavours I've tried by far. Highly recommend!

One of my top faves - two really nice locations to sit and eat your ice-cream in summer, delicious flavours for both the adventurous and those who stick to the classics, friendly staff who are happy to let you try different flavours to make your selection, AND they've just released a cool new app so if you're a regular you can start earning points towards free ice cream!!

When in Waiheke Island, this is the gelato shop you really cannot miss. Their gelatos are delicious and worth the splurge if you have a sweet tooth.

This cutesy little place was jammed packed every single day the summer I visited Waiheke. I tried to get in the long queue, had Marshmallow Rocky Road and Waiheke Honeycomb and I was really satieted. They were not too sweet, just right for my taste buds. I always scream for ICE CREAM!
Frank
Why can't all coffee places be more like this :-) Bach like corner spot with outdoor picnic table style seating, serving both awesome coffee and gelato... The coffee is only rivaled by Double Shot further up the road, but the gelato is unrivalled. I was recommended the "dulce and buttermilk" by our friendly scooper (which I tried - very creamy :-) but was told the burnt orange was superb. There are so many interesting flavours here, it is hard not to return multiple times to try them all out, and most times we visited there were queues....

Love love love. Gorgeous place, lovely staff, freakin delicious gelato and coffee. Get an affogato with Hazelnut or French vanilla - you’ll die and gela-to heaven.
ChefZ
Just WOW...perfect locale, amazing ice cream server(super chilled out guy) & above all, hats off to the individual behind the flavor profiling...cherry & star anise, roasted strawberry, strawberry & balsamic, lemon, honey & thyme, these guys know their flavors really well & are unique with their concept.
Julia Louise
The best ice-cream!! They always have interesting and amazing flavours and a great range of dairy free options. A must visit if you are heading to Waiheke.
Foodie Gal
Though not much customisable options and toppings, they offer fresh and fine flavour of icecream. Tried their plum, strawberry and peach flavours. Plum was really yum and smelled just fresh out of farm.
Michael
Great little container cafe with bagels, coffee and gelato (including lots of vegan options - just ask their staff). Coffee is good, bagels are excellent (my pick would be the tomato, avo and basil bagel)

I'm an ex local so I might be biased but I think this is the best gelato in Auckland! Amazing taste combinations and freshly made each day. Great little corner spot in Oneroa with lots of personal and character. Super coffee as well always made with love. Geoff and Ana do an amazing job and have really created something quite special and unique on the island. My only advice to others is don't leave it to late in the day to indulge as the really really good flavours will be gone! (But they're all good!).

This place is super cute and dinky.

There were great range of gelato flavours on offer, all of which looked appetising. We ordered the honey one, which was the richest honey gelato I have ever had.

The only downside though is their gelato is incredibly soft so melt very quickly, must eat quickly!

Best gelato I have ever had. It's such a beautiful place to sit down and have a scoop or two of gelato from a fine selection of flavours. The scenery is perfect and the price is definitely worth it. I sure as hell recommend this to anyone who enjoys a good ice cream on a hot day.

The only disappointing about this place is that it's all the way in Waiheke! After being on a gelato buzz after a holiday in Europe, I was so excited when we drove past this cute little container in Oneroa. Imagine how much more excited I was to discover they had a big range of dairy free gelatos. I tried both the Salted Passionfruit + Coconut and the Chocolate + Mandarin and YUM!! So tasty, you can really tell they use real, fresh ingredients in their gelato. The staff were also super friendly and helpful. Now I've just got to make a trip back there so I can try the rest!
Paris
Top quality fresh superbly tasty gelato!! Using organic milk and fresh fruit the Hazlenut passionfruit and affagato (espresso/vanilla/almond) were my fav!

Passed by this cute little gelato shop whilst on the way to Oneroa beach with a friend. We decided to come here as there were lots of people who looked like they were enjoying it

Lots of different flavours to choose from; i got the waiheke plum and my friend got the mango and lime. Mine was a tad bit sour but still nice and my friends one tasted full of mango which was yum!

The place is super cute, staff are friendly and prices are okay. $3.50 for a kids scoop, $5 for a single and $7 for a double

Wouldnt mind coming back here to try other flavours 😄

We came here to indulge ourselves with gelato after lunch today. I was impressed with the selection this little parlour had on offer. I chose the pistachio flavour - seriously this was amazing! I really really enjoyed it. Definitely try it out.
We came to waiheke Island for the weekend and we dropped by island gelato for coffees and bagels!

The best ugly bagels were really yummy! He didn't drizzle a little too much olive oil though.

The coffee was nice too

The best honeycombe gelato I have ever tasted. It's a shame that I can't get this on the mainland! Deliciously creamy! Quite well priced - $5 for a single scoop.

Best gelato I've tasted in New Zealand (and I consider myself a bit of a gelato expert after living in Rome) This comes closest to actual Italian gelato. The fresh ingredients shine through in every flavour, with actual bits of fruit etc. And no fake colours, but real colours. Ask to have a taste because there's something there for everyone, from totally dairy free sorbets, to creamiest creamy flavours. My favourite at the moment Mandarin Thai Basil. Love you guys at ICG.

Island Gelato Company is by far one of the best gelato outlets I've tried. Set in a renovated container it's small however the interior is scattered with beautiful decorations and bright pops of color. It's clean and in my opinion not unreasonably priced. ($5 for single scoop, $7.50 double) There is outdoor seating but with lines usually overflowing off the deck surrounding the container, getting a seat isn't always an option. But this does not deflected from the gelato itself.

The flavors are original and constantly rotating. I have had the hazelnut which is light and creamy but not overly sweet.

The mocha flavor is one of my favorites. This is surprising as I'm not normally a fan of coffee flavors but accidentally tried it and loved it. It has the perfect balance of chocolate with a coffee hit, that isn't over powering but a subtle mix up from a standard chocolate flavor.

The mint chocolate is divine, sometimes mint chocolate gelato lacks the chocolate element, however there are ample bits throughout, and the mint is so refreshing, it's perfect for a hot day.

The almond affogato was again a pleasant surprise for a non coffee lover. Until trying, I had not come across a flavor similar. The affogato elements mixed with the actual pieces of almond work really well together.

Salted coconut and passionfruit is not something I would not normally go for but I definitely enjoyed it. I'm pretty sure it was actually dairy free as well, but I'm not sure on that.

Cherry and macadamia is by far my favorite. Having actual pieces of cherry throughout the gelato makes for a lovely surprise, and the macadamia is perfectly executed. Sometimes I find a macadamia flavor can come across as quite artificial. This is not the case, the flavor is natural and perfectly compliments the cherry.

The honeycomb is not normally a flavor I would go for, but branched out and enjoyed. The little chunks of honeycomb are rich and the gelato itself is sweet and creamy. Although I liked it, I probably wouldn't go for it again. But it was good to try.

There are also plenty of dairy free sorbet options which rotate more regularly than the gelato flavors. Highly recommend!

Island Gelato is the newest addition to the Oneroa eatery scene. It has massive street appeal, it's clean and modern and very well styled, and the people behind the counter are really friendly.

I've also heard that the coffee there is amazing, but I haven't tried it myself. What I have tried is the Peach Gelato and the Lox Bagel... and what I can tell you is that whoever is making the food decisions there is WAY too in love with sugar.

I sampled the Green Apple gelato, which I wanted to be crisp and fresh, but it was like eating candy... so I went with the Peach. The first few spoonfuls were great. They've left the skins on the peaches, and the flavor is fantastic, but it's just TOO SWEET. I have a big sweet tooth, but I couldn't finish even half of this, it was just too sickly. I gave the remainder to my husband, and he looked sick after a few mouthfuls. It has a beautiful flavour, but it ruins the fresh peach taste with far too much sugar.

Then there was the bagel. For $12.50, I expected something amazing. What I got, weirdly, was the only sweet salmon bagel I've ever tasted, and it wasn't good. The bagel itself probably would have been lovely if it hadn't been burned, there was far to much creme fraiche (which is too thin and not savory enough to carry the salmon taste, it just kind of melted off the hot bread), a good amount of salmon, but it's the cheap, flavourless kind (again, for such a huge price, I expect good quality ingredients), and the onion and capers were definitely put on for the look of things, not taste. Whole slices of red onion aren't the nicest thing to bite onto, and I'm not sure what brand of capers they use, but they were huge, and strangely bland. Worst though, was the cheap, artificial tasting lemon slice... I stupidly squeezed mine over my lunch, and it made it taste like dishwashing liquid.

And I still don't know how they managed to make the whole thing as sweet as a candy bar!

So, for the price, there are much better products on the island...
