Review Passage Rock Wines - Auckland

It was absolutely amazing- the food was outstanding and the wine tasting too. I especially enjoyed the Reserve Viognier white wine! Overall a very lovely boutique winery with a lot of passion behind it.

We had a great time at Passage Rock today for lunch. My wife has been before for a girls weekend away and brought my daughter and I back after such a wonderful experience she had the first time. I really appreciate not only the great wine and food, but also the very family feel and basis of the winery, and accommodating families and kids who come to visit. Our four year old daughter loved seeing all the roses, grapes, growing right by the entrance, playing with their dog, the trampoline, having a dance on the wedding platform, and was intrigued by the fountains and looking for fish. I'm grateful for all the attention to aesthetics with plant life, architecture, and art. We really enjoyed the lunch and shared the Mediterranean olives, woodfired flat bread, and cured salmon with their pinot gris which we all highly recommend. We were amazed that the owner, David, took the time to come over and say hello and connect as well. Thank you so very much. We're sure to be back and encourage others to come and enjoy this special place they have created.

Fun and detailed tour and discussion by Passage Rock staff. The staff were friendly, cheerful, patient, and passionate about the winery. Loved walking around the facility. The view of the water is stunning. The wine tasting at the end was really nice. Would come back for this tour again soon.

Came by for wine tasting. Was greeted by whom we assumed was the Owner. Great guy who gave us a great introduction of their wine selection and we tried a variety of their wines. We ended buying a selection of their wines, including the Syrah, Sisters and Sauvignon Blanc.

Nice place that you can’t miss, awesome food and wine, especially wine, 2022 viognier is a wine that you definitely can’t miss, and their syrah, perfectly match with roasted lamb.

Lovely winery with award winning wines! Johnny was kind enough to open the winery for tasting even though it was closed on Friday. Nothing pretentious, just fantastic wines and friendly service - the Viognier and Magnus are a must taste

My favourite place in heaven. I'm pretty sure this what it'll be like. Great service, exquisite food 🍲 and wines to die for. Thanks Passage Rock for a wonderful lunch

Just an amazing place overall! The wines themselves are world class but the service is what differentiates this winery from the others. The staff and the owner (also the wine maker) are so welcoming, they make you feel at home immediately! The vineyards and the bistro just add to the awesomeness of this humble yet elegant winery. A must visit for everyone on a trip to Waiheke Island!

Great little spot for some food and wine in the vineyard. Unfortunately we turned up rather late and the waitress stated the kitchen was closed, I said I was really hungry so the kitchen made me a cheese platter specially . Good people and good service. The wine and food was surperb. Hopefully we manage to come back and visit again soon.

Came here because all of the other vineyards were super busy. Went in for lunch and struggled to find something on the menu to eat so just had a nibble of the platter and the pizzas and the kumara chips. The platter was underwhelming and the pizza base was quite floury but the kumara chips were pretty good. Everyone else I was with got mains and they all liked them. A friend and I also both got lemon, lime & bitters which were not sweet at all and did not taste normal. The ambience and view is nothing special. Not somewhere I would go back too.

Went here for lunch the other day, was kinda disappointed with how minimal the menu was but still managed to find something nice. Was really happy with my slow cooked lamb but my drink was absolutely disgusting! Genuinely put me off lemon lime and bitters for the night and i personally felt that they could’ve used the space better as the cafe looked really basic and could’ve been more pretty. But still was okay.

Came here on a Saturday in December and was surprised at how quiet the place was! It’s a bit out of the way compared to some of the other vineyards so guess that’s why. Beautiful location with a relaxed feel. Nice sitting outdoors but under cover so you’re not right in the sun. We had the platter and fries, amazing fries!! Platter was nice and generous but could have done with more variety of cheese. Service started out amazing and our waitress was great but swapped part way through and the other staff member wasn’t too attentive so mixed bag there. Overall a good location and delicious wines.

Went for a function so I'm not sure how accurate the food is to what is actually served on their menu. The food was good, very soft beef cheeks (but a bit bland), but personally preferred the chicken as it had more flavour. One of the desserts seemed to be a plum sorbet of kind? Ended up having another one since it was that good. The wine was very nice as well having tried all red, white and rose. The place is however quite far from the ferry terminal and also as a side note, the staff were not particularly friendly.

A friend and I came to a degustation evening and I have to say I was impressed not only by the friendliness but also the attentiveness of the staff. As I hail from the South Island I have visited more than a few winerys in the Marlborough, North Canterbury and surrounding regions and I must say Passage Rock had one of the loveliest Pinot Grigios I have tasted in a long time. I was facinated to hear that they utilise Bentonite in their processes as well. The highlight of the night however in my opinion was the food. It was absolute perfection!

We took the effort to drive out to passage rock. We weren't greeted, awkwardly had to join another group already doing a wine tasting. The staff member chatted to the original group but ignored us, just poured the tasting and that was it. All other vineyards on Waiheke chat to you and explain the different wines and their characteristics which makes the experience wonderful. We purchased a few of the pricey reserve bottles but they still charged us in full for the tastings which I found unusual especially given the poor service. The restaurant was empty and although it is pretty spot, the service was a let down. Sadly I don't think I'll be making a special trip out there again.

Passage Rock has always been a favourite of mine on Waiheke over the years and a place I would recommend to anyone visiting Waiheke. Relaxed atmosphere and great wine and food. However, our recent experience over the weekend was such a shame. I hate writing a bad review, but think it’s only fair for others to read/see so they can make up their mind.

It seems that the passion has been lost in running this restaurant, no maitre d or real manager keeping the kitchen and floor staff accountable or in check. Our waitress was very rude and would often forget to bring something out. Then the food was the biggest let down. The salad lacked any balance or acidity, even though it was duck and $33.00. It was just not enough for $33.00 either. I suppose for this price you want quite a decent salad and lots of flavour. A few people on my table ordered pizza, which used to be a highlight at PR but was lacking in topping and flavour, and were obviously under cooked. Then we moved into the dessert, which was the special a brandy snap dessert. With not a brandy snap in sight, apparently the brandy snap is crushed and mixed through the ice cream, but we could not see any. So we sent it back. Without brandy snap’s - it was just a bowl of ice cream for $15.00. I hope this place picks up again one day, such a shame.

So glad we stopped here for lunch on our tiki tour round the island. Possibly one of the best platters for two that I've had. Substantial servings with plenty of bread to accompany. Lovely setting as well.

Nice food and friendly service. Reasonable price. We wait to be seated for a bit and we kind of end up accomodating ourselves. Happy they had some nice kids meals and hight chairs.

After a reasonable drive to this vineyard we followed the entrance sign and waited to be seated. Approximately 15 customers were seated and we noticed 3 staff hanging around the make shift till area. Not once did they approach even when we walked in to see if we could be seated. We got tired of waiting (approximately 10 to 15 minutes) and went back to our car and left. Not impressed at all, much better service at more convenient vineyards.

Please remember, when a group of people book a table for lunch, charging ten dollars a head to try a wine to have with your lunch is not acceptable. Leaves a bitter taste in your mouth... reminds me of Ryan Air. Maybe you could charge your customers a tenner to use the loo instead...

We held our wedding reception at Passage Rock and it was fantastic. We had dined there before and knew the food was good so we were really pleased to have our wedding reception at the restaurant.

The staff were great to work with in coming up with the menu. They were friendly, professional and flexible and were very much focused on ensuring it was the evening was perfect.

Their delicious canapes and generous antipasto platters were a great start. The buffet that followed featured perfectly cooked salmon and lamb and of course their famous wood fired pizzas. Dessert capped off the meal amazingly though we could hardly fit it in!

Passage Rock wine deserves its status as one of Waiheke's most awarded wines with many of our guests saying how much they enjoyed it well after the event.

The food and wine totally helped in making it a wonderful occasion and we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it for a casual meal or more formal event.

We have not been to this side of the island before and to this vineyard so it was really lovely to try it. I enjoyed the wine tasting before our lunch and we did not have to pay for it since we were eating there. Had a lovely ravioli with kumara and blue cheese and snapper volute. It was very nice and homemade though like when I have made ravioli at home some of the parcels had lost their filling in the cooking. My partner had the snapper on a very tasty soft polenta. The deserts were also tasty though a little clumsy on the presentation. I loved the reserve chardonnay from the tasting so had a glass with my meal and took a bottle home. It must be lovely in summer. They were child friendly as we had our 3 year old with us and he had toys to play with and space outside to run around.

Spent a sunny Sunday afternoon here with friends over from Australia. Lovely spot, with nice food and very nice wine. We managed to get a table outside and were well looked after by the staff. As an added bonus we got a free wine tasting with our lunch.
Antipasto platter was delicious, pasta was okay but the pizza is awesome.
Its a fair distance out on the island but worth the trip.
