Review Red Crab Thai Cuisine - Auckland

Edward Wong
Paid NZ$39 for 2 persons lunch. The fried rice and pad thai were tasty. However, the chicken was slightly too hard and bland. Service was friendly and efficient. I paid in cash as there was a surcharge of 2.5% if pay by credit card.

Great choices on menu. Good value for size of meals. Really enjoyed the Choo Chee 8 large prawns Thanks Enjoyed our 1st meals so went back the next night and once again food was the best. Highly recommend the whole baked snapper. Roast duck was great too. Such good value for money.

Excellent food, view of blue ocean from the dining area, tasty Red Crab Thai food. Really worth your money $$. This is from 23 April 2022, day tour of Waiheke Island

Delicious food and a beautiful view...what more can you ask for really? Service was on par and the prices are good. I had the pad thai which is always a favorite, and never disappoints! The lunch was a medium portion and came quickly. Recommend!

Delicious Thai food with a gorgeous view. Highly recommend to all

Excellent service and care. Plus ice for a bump on my head from the oar when I fell out of dingy. Food and wine choice was excellent. A lovely place to spend the afternoon on Waiheke when it is too windy to go boating. We will be back. Thank you

Always a favourite and necessary eatery whenever we visit the Island. Mince chicken curry puffs are divine and the Massaman lamb curry never disappoints. We also had the pork belly this time and will have to add this to our regular orders. Guy runs a great place so if you can't dine in then take out to experience the mouth watering flavours

cozy place overlooking the beach..the fact I lived in Singapore for 8 years and been to Thailand couple of times, the food is good but it is more of Chinese flavour, not authentic..But if you are looking for asian food in Waiheke island, this one is recommended.. Freshly cook! You will enjoy sitting in a cozy resto overlooking the ocean with a breeze of cold air..

Wonderful experience. Delicious food and friendly staff with good view

Great food, really tasty and perfect portion size. Also had a good range of drinks. Plus they were open for dinner on Easter Sunday when many other restaurants weren't. Will go back in the daytime for lunch to also experience the beautiful views.

Love their food options! Family pack & combo 2 feeds myself & my family well šŸ«±šŸ¾ā€šŸ«²šŸ¼

Red Crab gets the big tick in terms of spice levels, just a bit hotter than you expect but not uncomfortably hot. Just enough to give you the sniffles. I had the chicken with red curry sauce which was full of flavour and my partner had an unexpectedly enormous plate of pork belly. The entree curry puffs were some of the best Iā€™ve had. Would have stayed for a banana split but this would have also split my pants
Melissa Murray
Pleasant surprise! Food was great, service good and speedy. No complaints here thank you šŸ˜Š

Prawns & Chef's Platter were yum, mains come with a side of your choice and view was good overlooking Oneroa beach.

Grabbed a few apps, glasses of wine and enjoyed the view. Greatly enjoyed.

Food here is 10/10. Had the duck curry very tasty spice was just right. Just lost one star due to staff service was below average & it was too dark couldn't see what I was eating. Restaurant does have a nice setting to it though

Staff are not friendly they kind of rude and food is average....Only people go there is because of the lovely view of the beach.... I hope they will be better in hospitality..

Legendary place to eat and drink. Awesome staff coupled a Good view of Oneroa beach.
I love Guy Thaiā€™s... canā€™t leave.
Good food good price good stuff
The good:
Cheap lunch at $12.5
Stunning views
Decent service. (Though it was quiet)

The Average/bad:
Ordered the pad Thai - personally a bit too salty and sour for my taste. Heavy on the fish sauce. Barely any peanuts. (Note: had just been swimming in the beach and that could've made things more salty for me, just trying to be objective)
Treharne Mark
Great food lovely people I will be back sooon
For more delicious dining and excellent service try their pad pong Karen very delicious also their salmon with spicy mango salad

Came here during lunch time and ordered tom yum and stir fry pork. The food's okay, nothing special. The one who took our order seems to be in a rush. I'm quite confused that it's a different person who served our order, seems to work in the kitchen and doesn't speak english at all.

Great service & food. Best Massnan in NZ. Very happy. Compliments to the chef(s). Highly recommended to all Waiheke diners........................

Very disappointing. We came around 8pm. On a friday night . They were quite empty with only two tables being used which set off alarm bells. Right near the front of house was a group of young loud drinkers all swears and swagger. We ordered tom ka gai mixed entree and scallops entree. The chicken in the soup was dry and overcooked. The mixed entree looked good but nothing great. Scallops were pleasant. But only got three tiny ones so wouldn't get it again for the price. The main problem was the overbearing other table which we talked to management about but they just shrugged and said they were regulars and their main income. Sad. Perfect position for a well run establishment to do really well.

This is lovely authentic Thai restaurant on the hart of Oneroa village, with amazing views and great food with the best value for money.Highly recommend

Ate here the other day - I'm unsure why the overall rating is so low. My wife, our three children and I enjoyed a beautiful variety of Thai dishes and the service was next to none! Will most certainly return to Red Crab when we are next on the island.

I took my mum over for an early dinner, the food was very fresh and tasty. We had fried snapper with chilli sauce, pad Thai and papaya salad. I also had a green-coloured mocktail, don't quite remember the name of it, but that was very refreshing. On top of that, the place was cozy and the view was stunning overlooking the ocean. I definitely come back again to try the lunch specials.
Coz I Can
Came here on Saturday 22 May and brought our family for lunch on a day out in Waiheke visiting our Uncle. Food was very tasty and the wait staff were so lovely, polite.

The last 2 main took forever to come out and finall came out when our other family members were done. I would have reconsidered giving a higher score but the cashier lady was plain rude.

I was polite to her thinking she may just be having a bad day. She rolled her eyes at us when I told her I wanted to pay for the drinks and half the meals and my aunt would pay the rest. I almost was gonna tell her to check her attitude before coming at us like that.

She then got out her calculator in an angry way. I would have understood if it was lunch rush or it was busy but this was 2pm on a Saturday with minimal customers. There was no one behind us either.

After a yummy lunch and awesome wait staff she overall was the main contribution to this score.

Tell her to fix the attitude.
What a joke this place is. Staff could not understand English, lady in charge was extremely rude, food was late and were waiting for drinks for ages. Will NEVER go back...
Igor Anany
This place is absolutely kids unfriendly. The food is average. Tom Yum is not tom yum at all. Pad Thai is ok. However staff is not very friendly. It took ages to bring us food. Don't think will come back here. There are better places at Waiheke.
Kathy Quan
Portion is very small. Staff not most helpful. They seem like they are sick of us being there. We wanted boiled water because their water taste funny and they said no. Most Asian restaurants have hot water, non restaurants would prepare hot for you upon requests but not here. At least they rejected us with a smile...
Wilson A
Came here and had the lunch specials. I had the fried rice and the beef dish (#4 on lunch menu). The fried rice was great, and so was the beef but the portion was very small. I think the entire dish had like 7 small pieces of beef. It was however, the lunch menu, maybe the dinner portion might be better.
Yorkshire Pudding
Great lunch deal! With incredible views.
For $20 at red crab you get to sit comfortably with 180 degree views across the ocean and eat delicious Thai cuisine.
Cooked fresh to order and served with a smile this place is wonderful.
Paul The Diner
We dined in and started with a shared entre of Chicken Satay.Ā Nicely cooked and a good peanut sauce.Ā We shared 2 mains and they were both excellent.Ā
A good place to dine with good views over Oneroa Bay.
Service was good also and the price quite reasonable.Ā Happily recommend this place a a good thai style meal.

As a regular patron of this restaurant, I can honestly said that I have always enjoyed coming here whether it is for lunch or dinner.

The ambiance of the restaurant is both modern, comfortable and warm with a stunning view overlooking Oneroa Beach.

The service is friendly and the staff always acknowledge me and my partner ( or when I'm with friends ) when I am dinning here. They will most certainly give us our usual favourite table if it is available.

We particularly like the variety on the menu and the special that are available on the board. Even if it is something that we like but not on the menu, the chef would accommodate our requests. Food are good and prices reasonable with a wide selection of wine.

We could recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Waiheke Island to come here for a tasty meal.

I give this place 5 stars for friendliness, cleanliness , service and most of all the food.

Lunch at here today chicken & cashel nut main $12.50 very nice good value and a glass of wine . Have been here many times over the last couple of years always friendly staff and good value.

First off it's worth mentioning tonight the service was better than what I've read. Against my better judgement I thought we'd try this place on the off chance the food had improved.
It hasn't since the last bad review. All dishes we ordered had little, bland or no flavour and to top it off they tasted the same - bland with not flavour. Presentation is pretty much the same, bland. The cocktail I ordered was sweet cordial with a straw and I left it unfinished. The only sure things about this place is the stunning view, the bottled beverage my dining partner ordered was bottles and the food is definitely rubbish.
Caitlin
Food was good but honestly pretty average for a Thai. I liked how the food was really hot so it seemed fresh. My friend got the pad Thai and really enjoyed it (rated 4) but me and my partner both got the chicken and cashew lunch special and it was nothing to rave about. Would come here again for lunch special because it's $12.50 but wouldn't pay the $20-22 for dinner.
Service was ok. Pretty slow. But friendly.
Zdo
I've been there with my girfriend, it was so amazing moment as i expected. We ordered the specials on board. (The king prawn with Thai green salad and the grilled Salmon with mango salad and wild rice) The taste was absolutely delicious with a pleasant seaview. The staff have a good service mind as well. We'll be back to Red Crab again.

RED CRAB Waiheke island has beautiful sea view over Oneroa beach, it's nice to grab a drink with fantastic food, good service and value for money. There also have $12.50 lunch special, pork ribs noodle soup is a must. I really recommend it!
Lee Murray
I come here once or twice a week, the food and service is fantastic, and the prices are very reasonable. I recommend the curry puffs and pork belly

Yes i can
Good Thai food and wonderful view
Very friendly knowledgeable staff offering an excellent a la cartel and chef menu
Green king prawns with mixed Thai herbs salad
Service Excellent and Thai food was high standards
The views was Amazing
Mai Thai
My favourite here is Som Tum papaya with hot sticky rice. Tom yum soup is also nice & tasty. Nothing can go wrong with these 2 dishes during sunset. The view is so beautiful. I could not stop taking picture. I will definitely come back here again & again.

Outstanding!
We arrived at 5:30 pm on a holiday weekend Sunday and were seated straight away despite having no prior reservation. Service was quick, attentive and professional. We both ordered soup to start and were immediately impressed. I remarked to my partner that the soup had set a high standard and the mains would have to be good to match; I needn't have worried, the mains blew us away. I had the crispy pan fried catch of the day covered in a delicious sweet and sour sauce, while my partner had the Mussaman Lamb which was cooked to melt in your mouth perfection- both meals were divine. Even the accompanying Jasmine rice was exquisitely done. I was surprised to not see any Waiheke wine on the wine list but the Yealands Pinot Noir was excellent.

The ambience is very good with tasteful decor amazing sea views and a romantic feel as the sun goes down. Everything we tasted was outstanding and we left feeling we had put a very fine finish on a beautiful day in Waiheke.

It's extremely rare to enjoy a meal of this quality for under $90 for two people in Auckland. Well done Red Crab Waiheke!
Rochana Kennedy
Really beautiful place to enjoy high quality thai food. Had the best scallops here, large and juicy and cooked perfectly.Ā
Will definitely be returning when visiting Waiheke island in the future.
Zahraa Almulla
Would never step foot in this place again the man at the bar is so rude when asked about a dish he tells me to read the menu and walks away. Horrible service and the food isn't worth it.
Ricky
Terrible service, if dining here expect no smile here. Exorbitantantly high prices nearly twice for half the portions of any normal Thai restaurant.
Ramieleatsshootsandleaves
We really enjoyed the service here, as well as the atmosphere and the lovely window views.
The food wasn't terrible, but I must admit that it didn't really taste authentic Thai.
But overall, I like this place - it has potential - I wish them the best.
Eric Mendez
I had 3 couples with me from abroad that day in Waiheke but sadly the weather was awful.

I wanted to end it on a good note so I took them to this restaurant and the short of it, we didn't end it with a blast. I know a few thai people and they ooze with hospitality hut the lady who served us lack that. The man behind the bar was also a bit of the same. Food was just ok but not fantastic.

Maybe it's just one of those things that knowing your the only one around, why even try hard.
Davin Dunthorne
Short and blunt.
We felt like thai food for something a little different but the girlfriend was allergic to MSG. Upon asking the duty manager if MSG is used in the he said No.
So we decided to eat there. Food was bland for thai, not the fresh vibrant flavours you would expect and the service was terrible.
Later that day my girlfriend developed symptoms in line with food allergies associated with MSG.
He lied about a content in their dishes if this was a more serious allergy someone could of been put in hospital.
DO NOT DINE HERE - Even if the view is fabulous.
Positives: The mocha ice cream from the chocolate "molten" cake was fantastic! and The man who we paid the bill to right when we were about to leave was friendly...thats about it.Ā

Negatives: worst ever atmosphere due to unfriendly waitress who seemed just rude seemed like they didn't want to serve us. The food was below average it wasn't even hot it was luke warm food that was served to us even though we were 2 out the 4 people at the time in the restaurant. We had between us chicken Pad thai and the minced chicken and stir fry. Ā The food had a weird dull flavour and was not authentic at all...in fact i truly HATE saying this but it was indeed the worst pad thai ive ever had. I LOVE thai food. I eat it everywhere i see it and even eating at mini takeaway thai places in auckland i would recommend that over this place. And the chocolate "molten" cake was definitely not "molten" at all so was major disappointed. The chocolate cake slice we cannot fault as it was delicious esp along with the ice cream however it was not what we had ordered nor expected as i was really excited to try the "molten" cake and at $8.50 a plain chocolate cake slice was not worth it. The worst thing about the whole experience is when they came and dropped our dessert on the table MIDWAY through our lunch meal!! We had to move our plates so make room on the tiny table and then had to eat at an angle while we had to rush to finish so our ice cream wouldn't melt. I just found thatĀ extremelyĀ RUDE. Never has aĀ restaurantĀ just poppedĀ our dessert before we even finished eating. And while eating our dessert they popped the bill and told us to "pay now" even though we were midway through an important conversation!Ā

Just bad customer service with well below average food that least could have been heated and misleading menu with the "molten" cake.Ā

Definitely a place to steer clear if you want to try the best thai foods along with the usual friendly and happy faces you see at other restaurants.

Awesome place to have your birthday at with a sea view :) chefs go extra mile to make your plate look more appealing and appetizing.......
Danissa P. Paramita
Good food, reasonable price range..a bit shabby on the service..but still acceptable. The bright sight is that this restaurant has a great view to the bay.
L&P
Terrible service, the menu portion is for kids, not for adult, food was ok, set lunch price was good, but the service was too bad, shame...ā€¦ā€¦
Andrew
Poor customer service indeed. Went here for takeaways - was served by the duty manager who was uninterested in assisting us...complacency I assume. Ordered the snapper fillets - what a disappointment - fillets were average and served on undercooked plain vegetables (see photo). Pad Thai was lackluster, fish cakes a strange texture and sweet & sour pork was cloyingly sweet. Chicken green curry was pronounced "pleasant". Would not recommend!
Clare McGibbon
Have eaten here once as we love thai food. We didn't experience the poor service others have and in fact the staff were very attentive. Food is average and nothing special. We had an entertainment book voucher which was accepted no problem. Would be pricey without that though.
Lana M
The Customer Service here is shocking.I went here with friends for afternoon drinks and tried to use my Entertainment Book Voucher. I was told I cant use my voucher because it was for dining only so I said that is fine we willĀ order some food with our drinks. I was then told no the voucher is not valid at lunch timeĀ even though it wasn't lunch time. He then proceeded to tell me we cant use the voucher when sitting outside, it can only be used when sitting inside. The staff were just so rude and I would not go back.
Dean Quate
white mans 'thai' food
nothing authentic here
nice view but food lacks authenticity
if you enjoy bland food and have no idea what real thai food tastes like then you will get bang for your buck
Chris Manikkam
We had the Roast Duck red curry and the Jungle Curry. The service was very unfriendly. The food was the worst Thai food I have eaten. I will never return or recommend this place.
Julie Courtnell
We chose this restaurant for a team Christmas lunch because of its central proximity, reasonable pricing and outstanding views. When considering the menu on the glass door, we were told to "go away, we're not open" (timing was around 11.30am - slightly before lunch trade commenced).

Should have heeded the warning signs then! Service and food were both extremely average. I suspect the main reason this place survives is because of its stunning location -definitely the worst Thai food I've ever had (can cook better myself at home). Won't be returning, and would not recommend to others.
Sally Green
This was the second time we lunched here - the first time enjoyed the food and service- but today the food was still great but the service and waiters need to pick up their game. Cheap lunch and desserts to die for.
Dan
Great prices! actually one of the cheapest restaurants on waiheke island. Has amazing views of Oneroa Bay and Coromandel. Try the chicken wings here they melt in your mouth!
I recommend this place to everyone i know wanting a great meal on the Island. also try ringing in your eat in dinner...
Kate Williams
Good Thai food. Came here while visiting the Island and had a good meal. The staff were very friendly and we left full and happy.
Secret Squirrel
Beautiful authentic Thai in a beautiful setting. The staff here know the meaning of hospitality, a comprehensive wine list, along with BYO keeps everybody happy. Thai staff and Thai chefs with changing well priced specials, I love the lamb shank mussaman. Well done guys. I hope you continue to prosper. You deserve it
M Hamilton
Superb view, service and value for money. The starters and mains were delicious, the dessert was pleasant if unremarkable. Highly recommended: would return in an instant...

I was visiting Waiheke Island with a friend yesterday, we called in to see all the new restaurants in Oneroa. Unfortunately most of them were closed apart from Italian, Indian and Thai, we decided to go to Red Crab Thai restaurant. The place was stunning, view over Oneroa Bay, nicely designed restaurant, modern with a touch of Thai ornaments but not over the top like a lot of Thai restaurants around Auckland. We shared a plate of tasting platter, it was beautiful. For Main we had Green chicken curry and sizzling beef, it was absolutely beautiful. Well done Waiheke for having a top restaurant.
