Review Chawlas Indian Restaurant - Auckland

Aneez Nabi
Jaspreet is a great host and the curries are freshly made and very delicious. I also recommend that you give their masala tea a try. My favourite dishes include: Chicken Vindaloo, Chili Chicken, Chicken 65, Sizzling Tandoori Chicken & Chicken Biryani, their rice is aromatic and their soft Naan or Garlic Naan bread that you can dip into the gravy (masala) for the ultimate and most beautiful Indian cuisine and experience Auckland city has to offer. All their vast array of delicious dishes are of top quality. For dessert I highly recommend Mango Kulfi. I eat here frequently during the week for this business is truly worthy of supporting! Extra special thanks to Jaspreet, the wonderful service staff and the Chefs! Respectfully, Aneez.

(Visited on 21 August 2023, reviewed on 23 August 2023) My friends and I went to this restaurant for dinner. We ordered the Lamb Do Pyaza, Butter Chicken and Dal Makhani with the naan baskets (cheese, garlic and plain). All were delicious, especially the lamb Do Pyaza, which we asked for the Asian spicy level (not very spicy for me though). I also tried the mango kulfi and Masala Chai. The Masala Chai could be better as it tasted like a regular tea instead of one with spices, and the kulfi was not bad. Overall, it is still quite good for an affordable Indian meal in the CBD.

I’ve tried nearly all the Indian cuisines around CBD but this one is the best. One of their specialties is their fresh Naan which tastes really good with their wide range of curries. Thumbs up for their customer service as well.

The Fish curry was wonderful. Wife loved it and the portion size was great. However we got sweet chilli sauce which was a big let down. We expected to have sezhwan chutney

Authentic Indian fare done to perfection. Fresh food, excellent spices, perfect portions. Will definitely be returning.

Their lunch special is totally worth it if you are looking for some cheap and tasty eats which is pretty hard to find in Auckland nowadays. Tried the mutter panner which came with rice, Naan, paapad and a drink of your choice for 12.50$. Was really very tasty. Service and attention was top notch. Will be back to try the chicken and lamb dishes.

Do yourself a favour and eat here. My friend and I wandered in here randomly when all the nearby restaurants were closed due to a water outage. The service and food we received were amazing, I've travelled to India before and this is the best Indian food I've ever eaten. It was so nice we came back with friends a couple of nights later. I'll absolutely be back when I'm back in Auckland. Thanks!

One of the most delicious Indian food I’ve ever tried. This little cozy restaurant is located in Auckland CBD. I had the chicken madras, yummy !… it includes a portion of steamed jasmine rice. Roti bread is apart. The prices are perfectly reasonable and the quality of the products is high. I came back 2 nights after the first time I tried it, my favorite Indian food in Auckland!

I was pulled in by the advertisement board of the evening special. However it was not until I had finished my meal that I was asked if I wanted the beverage that came as part of the special offer. If they would have provided the drink at the start I may have ordered another as the butter chicken was very tasty 😋

All food we ate were amazing! Friendly, good atmosphere! I loved spinach one and also nut’s one. I will definitely come back!

Great service was left comfortable while dining but naan bread was cold when served suggesting better preparation could have been made but overall great experience and my mother really enjoyed her meal so definitely worth a visit!

Great food, good value. We had the tandoori chicken and the Chawla’s Special, Cream Chicken. Then finished it up with the pistachio kulfi. Cocktails and wine made for a fine night indeed. Very nice, authentic flavours. Recommend and will return.

The service was a bit slow as there were only one serving there and a cook in the back but if you have time they have really good deals. We had their lunch special and had chicken curry with Naan, rice and poppadum and soft drink for $15. Very nice curry and yummy fresh Naan. We were very happy with this lunch time.

The food was very nice .. Naan no1 . The customer service was very bad.. No thank you or bye.

Love their butter chicken with the rice and naan bread. Just wondering if there is an option of not adding sugar to it. The taste is different from the one I'm used to overseas. But I still love it nonetheless. Meals are very easy on the pocket too for those looking to try Indian food

Chawlas has always been my favorite food spot to quench my cravings for Indian food. I often go to the manukau outlet but since I was in cbd I tried their other outlet in Wellesley street. First of all the ambience, the restaurant might look shady to some people but it's beautiful to me, the paintings and decorations are majorly rajasthani I suppose. As per the food it was delicious just like the other branch. Tried their chicken tikka masala, and absolutely loved it. Earlier I've tried cream chicken ( bit sweet for my taste) and Afghani chicken tikka from the same place and enjoyed it.

Bought a takeaway vegetarian biryani for $16. Very unauthentic, not at all Indian tasting but almost as if I had purchased it from a Chinese restaurant. No nice fragrance but smelled like tomato. No turmeric or coriander seeds were used! Medium spice level was too mild. And used peculiar vegetables that should not be in a biryani like sour cabbage, broccoli and celery... what on earth are they thinking? The goat cheese was a nice idea but did not work well with the rice.

Had dinner here with a friend today! Ordered a chicken 65 for entree which was really well seasoned and cooked, just a little overpriced for an entree with such portion. We proceeded to use Zomato Gold to purchase the lamb curry we ordered (coconut flavoured) which tasted rather bland. A major disappointment of the meal is that when we told the waiter we are using zomato gold, she proceeded to name multiple items on the menu that are not available for the deal (literally anything over $18), which was quite a put off. After redeeming the zomato gold deal, the waiter proceeded to tel us that RICE IS EXCLUDED FROM THE CURRY when Zomato gold is used, making us dish out another further $8 for our meal, which was quite a disappointment. The restaurant should improve its integration with the zomato gold deals and SPECIFY certain conditions more obviously on the store Zomato page to better the satisfaction of users! Food was a 4 but for the service, only a 3.
Glenda.0520
The restaurant didn’t provide clear instructions on this app about the conditions of the Zomato gold on the website and only offer a sign at the counter that customers couldn’t see until the end of the payment.. It does confuse the customers and we have to pay for additional items from the menu eventually. Really gotta be careful not to get tricked 🙏🙏

Average food coupled with the rudest waitresses I've ever encountered. One of completely inattentive during ordering, and others were rude and dismissive at check out when trying to redeem Zomato Gold, only to be told that the dish we had ordered doesn't qualify for the offer. When asked how we're supposed to know as the dish we would be getting for free is the same as every other curry on the menu, and that they didn't have any conditions posted on their Zomato page like every other restaurant, the waitress simply slammed a laminated piece of paper at the cash register and said it's our responsibility to know the terms and conditions - as if every person who walks into the restaurant should be going up to the counter to find the T&Cs. In fact, we had asked if we should go up to the counter to order in the beginning (in which case, we would've been able to catch the sheet of paper at least) but they insisted on (awful) table service. Judging by some other recent reviews, I wouldn't be surprised if they are purposely misinforming customers to try and make an extra buck. When I gave them suggestions (after paying full price) to put their terms on their Zomato page, they simply dismissed me and said that this is the last week they'd be doing the deal anyway so it doesn't matter.<br/><br/>I used to suggest everyone to go here for Indian food, now I'll definitely be offering everyone a word of warning when considering it - especially if you plan to use Zomato Gold or buy any of their specials.<br/><br/>Edit: after arriving home and checking the receipt, realised they overcharged us as well. We didn't cross check as we were too busy trying to reason with the waitresses. Can't be bothered going back for a few bucks but just wow.

This is the second time I visited this restaurant even when I had received a bad service but I thought of giving it another chance, trust me this restaurant has one of the rudest waitress I've ever seen. It doesn't stop there the food was even bad, we ordered Chicken Rogan Josh which did not come and instead we got Chicken Kadhai, also ordered Paneer Butter masala but the paneer was stale. Looking at the behaviour of the waitress we didn't even bother complaining, we just paid and left and will never ever return!!<br/>It's a shame Chawla's is one of the best known restaurant in India and to see these people ruining the name is just sad.
Andrew
Poor customer service, Naan was gold, rude waiteress
Ayon Bhattacharyya
Terrible customer service and management!! We ordered Mango chicken and lamb korma which did not look or taste anything like a korma. But the worst part was when we went to pay and show them zomato gold, the manager refused to honour it trying to argue that we did not show it before ordering. Even though we have used it multiple times at Chawla's and they always made the deduction to the bill at the end, she was adamant that it couldn't be done. After explaining that they were about to lose 2 loyal customers who were now receiving a terrible experience, she eventually said I've done it for you but only cos you are making a scene. Pathetic customer service and she should not be in hospitality! All she needed to say was I'll do it for you this time but next time you need to show us before you order... instead you left us with an awful taste in our mouths and we will never go back again. Hope it was worth it ...

Very good Indian Cuisine Option in Auckland. Curry Chinken and lamb Is tender (Chicken Is better). <br/>Friendly staffs.

Stopping by for a late Sunday dinner we ordered the chicken tikka masala, palak paneer with garlic naan, raita and mango chutney. The service was efficient and helpful and the food was just delicious with decent portions too. Very impressed, we will be back.
Lisa Muller
Had a lovely dinner in a cosy atmosphere. Food was packed with flavour. Will definitely be back

This place is our go to indian restaurant in the city. Its a time honoured restaurant since 1960, the deco's a bit old fashined but who cares, their dishes are absolutely delicious! Always order the cheese and garlic nan. As for the curry, we enjoyed Chicken/lamb korma very much. With zomato gold, we ordered 2 curries 2 rice and 1 bread, and it cost 15.50 per person. I'd say its reasonable priced.
Vernon Sequeira
Average food and even shittier service. Eftpos machine wasn’t working and they asked if I could get money to them over text, eventually bank transferred. Made up a stupid excuse as to why they would not accept the gold unlock. Would not recommend and would not go back.

Small restaurant on Wellesley across the street from the Civic. Came here with a mate and we got served straight away no complaints.<br/>Staff were friendly. Food came out on time which was really good and the portion sizes were surprisingly big. Music was on point too it really created a decent vibe and ambience. Had some groovy chill indian music.<br/>We ordered Balti chicken, kadhai chicken and naan. Have to say kadhai was our favourite. This is a great place for a quick feed with your mates...

Forgot to take photo as we are too hungry at that time. Ordered for tandoori chicken, a lamb dish and curry fish. tandoori chicken taste fabulous, the lamb dish taste good too. Spicy level I ordered for triple hot, but its taste so good, can't stop eating. But little stomachache after that, maybe was too hot for me but I would still order that next time haha!

I had come here with a group of friends after uni also to use our Zomato gold accounts together as we had just gotten it but the server immediately changed her mood and tone when we mentioned it. As we had 6 people with 3 people having Zomato gold they would not let us use all of it; only allowing us to use 2 of the 3 gold memberships.<br/><br/>When we had inquired if there was any rice included with the curries earlier, the server had said yes but changed to a no when we had mentioned Zomato gold. The whole experience while dining had a drab mood, due to the difficulties we had redeeming the membership we paid for as well as the unpleasant behaviour by the server.<br/><br/>The food, however, was all right but nothing to wow about in my opinion. Overall, I was quite let down by the service, especially albeit the average food. Nothing too redeeming about the restaurant and I wouldn't visit again.<br/><br/>Don't offer Zomato Gold if you're not going to uphold the benefits that are provided by it or else have a better advertisement on the Zomato page about your conditions.<br/>.

Service - The service we received from the girl was appalling! She's rude and rolls her eyes.<br/><br/>Dirty tables, Staff was quite rude as well, needed to repeat my order a few times. Overall experience was a meh....<br/> Definitely over priced for it's quality<br/><br/>Food - It was a let down.<br/><br/>Chawla's Special Chicken - Chicken pieces very were tough and tasted like it was dumped in a Air Fryer. Over powered with Cream and had no balance in flavors very bland<br/>.<br/><br/>Kadhai Paneer - Nothing to wow about. Filled with Onion, did not taste paneer at all.<br/><br/>Lachha Parantha - Parantha was very thick, couldn't see any layers in it.  <br/><br/>Chicken Naan - Slightly too cooked for me as it had a burnt taste to it, not much filling for the size of naan.<br/><br/>Mango Lassi - Disgusting. Tasted like I was drinking sugar syrup with a little Mango Flavor. Had not fruity mango flavor .<br/><br/>Overall disappointing experience as I was looking forward to it.

Staff/service: 3.5/5<br/>Venue: 4/5<br/>Price/portion: 3.5/5<br/><br/>First time visiting here not during lunch time. We ordered the prawns jalfrezi $20.99, butter chicken $17.99, bhindi do Pyaza $15.99, 1 rice and 1 garlic naan. The chicken and prawns portions is not heaps. The prawns jalfrezi tasted like frozen pre-cooked prawns. Also with the mains that we ordered it doesn’t include any rice which we need to order separately.<br/><br/>Join Zomato Gold and get 1+1 on food or 2+2 on drinks. I visited here 2 times.<br/>And every single menu was SO NICE.<br/>But little bit expensive. If you go this place, have to try cream chicken. So Good!

It's a really good place for a budget meal. Actually, there is nearly no service in this restaurant but it doesn't influence the taste of the food.
Balaji Govindan Kumaran
Really dissapointed with the service here. The front house team member was not at all pleasing. Me and my friends used 2 Zomato gold(1+1) accounts to avail the offer to purchase biriyani and some other foods. For biriyani the team member did not give the raitha and when I asked she refused to give saying that we have used zomato gold thereby raitha can't be given as complimentary. But according to the gold membership nothing States as such. When I told her the rules of the membership she told that I don't have authority, hence I told that I need to speak to the manager and she went and came back and told me that the manager is busy and you cannot speak. She was speaking in a rude manner. I told that I do not blame you as you are just a staff but a manager needs to address the customer right, Customer should be ultimate priority to the company. Finally in a rude manner, she told we don't have raitha at all, and gave yogurt instead of that. What kind of customer service are they providing??? Though the food is average(chicken biriyani, chicken wasn't cooked properly) and the customer service is really bad. Moreover we are paying the full price to avail the +1, and we are not getting anything free here as we have given money to buy the membership. Really it it's pathetic and I will never visit to this restaurant once again.
Michael Teoh
Chawla's is a restaurant where it can do no wrong! Food serving is generous and one plate of briyani chicken can last me two meals! Be mindful of how spicy you want, although the staff will always be around to check on you on the food. Will definitely visit there again!
Joel Young
Nice food, amazing service, but added the rice as a seperate and expensive charge to get around zomato 2 for 1s. $7 for two helpings of rice on top of the meal wasn't reasonable in my opinion.

We went to this resturent since it had zomato gold, but apparently rice is not included in zomato gold dishs, only included in normal ordering, but that was fine we did not mind paying for rice<br/>BUT the lady who served us was very unfriendly and rude, because of her our entire dinner was ruined it felt very awkward, she was not welcoming at all and did not smile even once.<br/>Food was average,<br/>Will never go back again because of rude waitress.<br/>If i could i would give 0 star for waitress
GREG
The costumer service by the women working at front desk was not good. She was not welcoming at all. She seemed very rude. We said excuse me to her because we had a question and she was always on her phone texting and talking to someone, felt like she did not want to be there. me and my friend went for dinner there around 5pm but our mood was gone bad by the costumer service as she rolled her eyes,we ate very quickly and went as our buzz was already killed. The food was average. We have been to many restaurants but this one had worst costumer service by the front desk person.
Vivian Yeh
I had always loved to come to this place for very authentic Indian food but I guess I will stop coming here as I had the worst experience with the waitress. I was just waiting to pickup my meal and trying to have a chitchat with the waitress and she gave me the look like I was stupid enough to even wanna start the conversation. I don't expect to be treated like VIP or whatever but this is so rude. I had no bad intentions but just to ask how are you etc.. No matter how good the food is I don't think I wanna go back again
Vedika
Slow service , tried butter chicken and tandoori chicken .<br/><br/>Tandoori chicken was too dry and burnt from sides. Butter chicken was alright but not as good as other places in Auckland. Could have been better. Probably the first and last time here.

They are cheating. I got zomato gold. But they didn’t follow the zomato rules. They over charge me. And don’t give me money back. Front lady is very rude. she said to me that why U don’t check the bill before pay. Excuse me?? u didn’t show me bill. Only tell me how much, How can I check? Do I need to bring my own calculator every time when I go to restaurant? I never meet this kind of restaurant before. If u go there. Ask your bill before u pay. Because they are cheating. I hope zomato can take this seriously. I can pay money to buy zomato gold. But I don’t want this kind of restaurant on their list!
Naman Patel
We went there for lunch, it was pretty quiet. Service was not that great. We had Zomato gold but were told “its too complicated”. We ended up paying full price despite having Zomato gold. Food was very average. We usually go to other Indian places nearby, so tried Chawlas for the first and probably last time.

A decent Indian flair - we dined there last weekend. I had the prawn curry and my partner had a lamb dish. Curries were tasty. We ordered both dishes with medium heat but mine was a tad too spicy. Portions were ok - similar to other Indian joints. Service was top-notched. The waitress that served us was knowledgeable, swift, and attentive. The decor could use a bit of an upgrade though, but all up - it was a pleasant dining experience.
Food2belly
Very authentic yummy Northern Indiana food. As soon as you enter you could smell all the aromatics, it was like bathing in spices 🥰😋<br/>.<br/>My paneer butter masala was super creamy and I loved the tender goat cheese cubes that added saltiness to the sweet and creamy sauce.<br/>.<br/>The chicken Jalfrezi had a generous amount of vegetables which is rare in any meat curry. However they got have bagged up the spices like star anise, my partner kept biting into the spice, it wasn't pleasant, it was like tiny stones.<br/>.<br/>The roti was burned and they tried to cover up by tearing it off and faced down.<br/>.<br/>Overall the quality of the curries are exceptional and great value for money if you have @zomatogold for 1+1 food! @zomatonz

Came here for dinner before a show at the Town Hall on a Sunday night. Service was friendly and the decor was warm and inviting. For starters, we had Cauliflower Pakoras (off-menu item) which were amazing! I almost ate them all without sharing! The dipping sauce was so tasty - I think it was a Tamarind dipping sauce? For mains, we had Malai Kofta and Navrattan Korma. The sauce in my dish was very flavourful - my friend's sauce was much the same but he got spicy. Overall, my night of vegetarianism was a success. I highly recommend Chawla's for a tasty night of Indian cuisine :)

Second time here and I have to say the food was heaps better tonight! Butter chicken all day. The manager was very friendly and accommodating and def will be back to bring my family here.
#fatlyfe
Came here for lunch on a weekday. They have a lunch special for $12.50 which was rice naan curry and a drink. For $12.50 that was such a good deal got the Rogan josh and asked for it 🥵 there was a good amount of heat in it which wasn’t just a sprinkle of chilli powder...... we were also dum enough to order a lamb biryani thinking the lunch special wasn’t going to b enough. We ended up packing it completely 😂 service was fine and the staff friendly
Martin Geesas Gabion
Great food and great quantity. Authentic taste and good service. Had the butter chicken and tikka massala. The butter chicken is not too rich and has a good amount of meat. You also get asked how spicy you want it which is very considerate.<br/>Do recommend to try<br/>

Very disappointing visit. Food was okay, but we never felt welcomed being we reach there at around 10.30 and they were like we need to order fast. We had the food, and then when we asked the lady for Zomato Gold to unlock, she refused to do so saying that we need to tell them at first place that it is a Zomoto gold offer. We kinda feel very bad about the situation has been handled, could have offered more of professionalism. I perhaps will never be going back.
Pary Vaghefi
The food tastes very good. However,<br/>1- they mentioned there that the rice is not included in orders if you use Zomato Gold (that is fine if they say it on there Zomato page but they don't )<br/>2- The staff members are not polite or friendly. Not at all... They may have a bad night or it is just the way they are. We were a group of 4 people (on a double date) so I'm sure we were not annoying them. I wanted to order and the waitress just showed me the palm of her hand (as in.. Shush) because she wanted to repeat the order to our friends.<br/>
Brian Ji
The only down side was that rice did not come with the food due because of Zomato Gold. Had to order two naan and two bowls of rice separately which eventually worked out similar to not having gold. But food was really good, kind staff and nice interior as well!
Umesh Raaj
Very pathetic tasting food. Ordered Kashmiri pulav and was served a 3rd grade fried rice type thing with so much oil and coconut. I wonder if coconut grows in Kashmir or Kerala.

Cheese naans here are so great along with the lamb sagwala. Both were highlights of our meal. They are also popular for their cream chicken which is also quite nice if youd like a change from butter chicken but prefer a creamy curry. Tandoori chicken was also nicely cooked. Overall, great food.

So good! I used to come here for work day lunch. Yummy food with a soft drink at a very reasonable price. Naturally I decided to come back for dinner when I found out they’re on zomato gold. Good as always.<br/><br/>Food 8/10 Service 7/10 Ambience 7/10<br/><br/>Highlight: butter naan<br/>Disappointment: samosa (too dry and hard cannot chew it at all)

I highly recommend Chawla's for authentic North Indian cuisine. The place is well decorated and has the ambience reminiscent of a typical restaurant in New Delhi. The hosts are fabulous, and chefs are second to none. I would be lying to myself if I didn't mention that I love the music and vibes more than any other Indian place that I've been to, in Auckland.
Netra
Not a bad place to get your Indian fix in the city. The only reason I rate it 3 is because of the lack of consistency. Sometimes the food is out of the world and sometimes its just not worth it. Its not a cheap eat as well. Decent to okayish meal with good staff Is your thing then go for it.
Brandon Huang
Pretty good! Was worried that the food quality would be low because of Zomato Gold 1+1, but absolutely wasn’t. <br/><br/>Beautiful, creamy chicken and umptuious Rarra Lamb! Generous portions, super satisfying, awesome service at 9:30pm - would definitely come back.
Maddali Praveen
My friend and I wanted to catchup on an early dinner and chose this restaurant. We ordered Hariyali kebab and Lamb Biryani. Kebab was succulent and the flavour was good. Coming from a place which is known for it's biryani, I can't help but compare every biryani that I eat to the best biryanis I have had previously. Having said that, the biryani had all the necessary spices, was decent and was of good portion size. Be careful for what you ask for! These guys make sure they make up to the spice level you ask :D Special mention to the mint yougurt dip/chutney. It was soo good that we asked for another one.<br/><br/>It's good that the staff is courteous and would want to make sure if everything is alright. Not many Indian restaurants that we often visit do so.<br/><br/>Sure thingy, will consider being to this place again :)<br/><br/>

This is my fourth time here. Loved the food that I had last night. Their Lamb Korma and Chicken Madras was simply Superrrbbbbb . . . . Too good. . . . 😀😀☺ Thank you🤗

Who doesn’t love to eat Indian curry after shopping?<br/><br/>Service: 9/10<br/>Since we were quite a large group, it took quite some effort to create suitable seating for us, but the waitress happily helped us.<br/>She was super patient waiting for us indecisive people who just couldn’t decided which curry we wanted with which meat.<br/>They also gave up free popadums.<br/>The food arrived in a decent amount of time so we didn’t have to wait too long. <br/>They were also completely fine with us splitting the bill.<br/><br/>Food: 7/10<br/>I ordered the lamb korma and my friends ordered the butter chicken, mango chicken and a vegetarian curry I can’t remember the name of.<br/>My lamb korma had a deep warm flavour filled with spices and herbs. The curry did have some hard chunks of spices in it which made eating it a little unenjoyable. The chunks of lamb were huge and the portions filled us up. It’s not the worst but I’ve had better.<br/>The basmati rice was nicely cooked and perfectly fluffy.<br/><br/>Ambiance: 7/10<br/>The restaurant is quite small and can be easily missed if you’re not looking for it.<br/>The seats and tables aren’t super new and clean, they’re ok I guess.<br/>The lighting inside is a little uncomfortable when the sun hasn’t set yet because the bright sunlight doesn’t match the style of furniture inside.<br/>There are quite a lot of cultural decorations that boast the traditional atmosphere.<br/><br/>This is probably the best indian restaurant in the city but there are better ones in the rest of Auckland.
Naveen Adari
It's always difficult to find a proper authentic Indian restaurant in Auckland but if you are in the city, Chawlas fits the bill perfectly. Just loved the haryali kebab and lamb biryani. Do be prepared before asking the waitress to make it extra spicy, you'll sweat like crazy. The ambience is pretty nice but the food is definitely worth the money you spend. Would definitely visit again to try out the other dishes on the menu.
Sol
We came to Chawala as it was promoted in zomato gold. The food was average, good price for the promotion, however I don't think I would be willing to pay full price for average food.

Tried kadai paneer today through Meal Pal. Really tasty vegetarian meal. Easy pick up and generous portion. They also do eat-in lunch specials for $12.50 with a curry, rice, naan and drinks, plenty of seats if you want to dine in.

A very tasty Indian restaurant in the city. The dessert is not on the menu. But if you ask for the staff, the chef will make this one to you. It’s a chocolate rotie with vanilla ice cream on the side. Mix them together, tastes excellent.

Been there and i must say - satisfied soul !! Perfect Indian ambience and food is super duper. Yummy tasty food and service is pretty good. We ordered malai kofta kadai paneer bread basket and chicken naan. It was fresh and taste was yummlicious. Must try for some good indian food. Kudos team

Quality of food dropped significantly when I availed 1+1 on food through zomato gold compared to a couple weeks ago when I dined and paid full price.<br/>Ordered two starters of which one was chilli paneer - the paneer for sure was days old, chewy and hard to eat.<br/>Got 2 mains as well - bhindi and kadhai paneer. I've had the 2 at full price and the taste and preparation were definitely compromised. Ended up wasting half the mains.
Upbeatbean
promptly took our order, Great service, friendly staff. Good piping hot food except that naan was hard to chew. Ambience was good too.<br/>Would visit again.<br/>

I wish there was something below 1 star. Would've given that. Ordered mushroom tikka, mushrooms were raw and undercooked. When requested to change, they said they are going to recook n try if we like it. We didn't have the liberty to order another entree as we had booked through Zomato gold. The manager said we were getting the dish for free anyway to our faces.<br/><br/>The main was creamy paneer, it was full of salt and tasted only of ginger. We ordered 2 naan and one mains but weren't able to gulp that too.adding a pic of how much food we wasted!<br/><br/>Don't spoil your weekend evening as these guys don't have any sort of professionalism/ food is awful and hospitality is below the boundary!!

This is our first time to Chawla’s . Tried mixed platter was decent but Seekh kabab felt like a sausage. Fish Malabar curry was awesome and I would definitely go back when I crave for an Indian curry
Shannon
Came here for dinner, ordered the fish malabari and korma chicken, plus two naan breads and wine. Service was a bit off, not very friendly at first was a bit in a rush to take our food order rather than sort us out with drinks. Fish was a bit translucent ie undercooked. Not as good as other malabar fish curries I’ve had. The naan was the worst part of the meal. Seemed like frozen and reheated naan. Super thin and not good eating at all. There’s no atmosphere in this place either so in my mind doesn’t have anything going for it other than being open later than a lot of place around.

Great service and atmosphere. Nice food 🍲 I recommend trying this place, it's nice and central and I enjoyed my time there. Nice vibe and music 🎶

The best Indian food I have had since leaving the UK 11 years ago. Food amazing, service really good. Will definitely be back when in Auckland again!

Food was great and came really fast even after they made an initial mistake with it. The butter chicken and naan combo was done really well, as well as the lamb balti. Serving size was pretty good and curries had a lot of meat which was a pleasant surprise compared to 1947 and other Indian places. Service was great and we were well looked after. Definitely recommend for some good Indian food in the city.
Andy Chitre
Good food, good service, quick service and smiling staff. Tasty Daal Makhani and Butter chicken Indian style.. Thankyou all. Keep it up. Will visit again.
OD
Good Indian restaurant with consistent quality.<br/>The service staff are friendly and professional <br/>I would say the price is on the higher side for an Indian restaurant but their pricing for lunch menu is very competitive being located in the CBD.<br/>Open for long hours which is a good advantage<br/><br/>
Steve
Good value lunch menu and good central location. Curries were authentic and far better than the usual mall rubbish. Slight issue with the strange tasting tap beer, but the team resolved for us.
Prateek Bhalothia
One of the best place to eat Indian *DELICIOUS* food. Every dish have perfect taste and proportion.<br/>Personally I love to eat non-veg if I go out but it's only place where I will eat veg food too.<br/><br/>Great Job guys.
Suraj Asha Barnawal
Great service, amazing food and lot of Indian options. You won’t be disappointed with Vegetarian options and aroma, to add good drink options.
Sara
Love their butter chicken, ask to make it Indian spicy. Lamb biryani and lamb rogan jhosh are both also very delicious! We order for delivery almost every other week here. Only down side is that there has to be a $35 min order for free delivery.
Andy Stephens
Came here for early dinner tonight. 5:30pm. Was greeted well by the staff. Didn’t have a lot of time as we were going to the theatre. So only had mains. Chicken Do Piazza (hot). It was beautiful. Well worth it. Family had Korma and Butter chicken. Both loved them. Would go back anytime. Only a small place, quite basic. But worth it.
Jazz Dos Santos
Ordered the butter chicken lunch special. I was impressed with the price, one curry, rice and naan for $10.90 which is a great deal. But the food was very average. Butter chicken was bland, and the naan was very doughy. It was over cooked on the outside, but raw on the inside. I probably won’t come back here.
Bean
Very friendly service. Curries were amazing, we had the Butter chicken and lamb korma both full of flavour. Will definitely be back. If you arent Into spicy the mild is just right

It was a Official trip to City and I came with my wife. We decided to eat snacks and popped into this Restaurant. Genuinely the dish we ordered Cheese Chilly was so unique and tasty. We both enjoyed it and gave them a compliment. Easy 5 stars<br/>Good Luck Guys
Ashish Shyamrao Haridas
This is one of the most disgusting food place in in Auckland CBD. Management on counter is so mean who does not know how to serve customers. DO NOT VISIT THIS PLACE IF YOU CARE YOUR MONEY AND TIME.
Rajkamal Kaur
came here on a Monday Evening and absolutely loved the service given with tasty food. Highly recommend this restaurant to everyone. <br/>We got the table we had wanted and the staff did not make us wait longer then 3 mins. food was given out on time all hot and tasty.
Godfather
great food in the center of the city. cream chicken is must try. service is good as well. only issues is parking but do not mind little walk for cream chicken
Cathy Fan
Got a large mango chicken and a cheese naan to share between 2 people. It tastes somewhat like butter chicken but less buttery and suprisingly I couldn’t really taste the mango flavour but I still give 4/5 for taste. The cheese naan was really good tho and full of cheese! <br/>Price wise, I think it’s decent and they have lunch specials too!!<br/>Would come here often whenever craving Indian food, and keen to try their other curries!
Abhay Jindal
Very bad food, we had ordered chilly chicken, Rafa chicken and butter naan. Chilly chicken was tottaly burnt, naan were all cold, and even the service was pathetic....they just have one person handling the whole Resturant.....highly don’t recommend this Indian Resturant
Ankit.vaid268
Very average food. Chicken tikka was not good at all, it kind of had a sweet taste. I expected much more from Chawla’s but was hugely disappointed
Jason Yang
Pretty good curries and rotis without the food colouring from food court curry. They have a wicked student discount. Highly recommend the rogan josh.
Anupama Samantroy
Went there on Saturday night, ordered chicken tandoori, green salad and thumbs up.<br/>Thumbs up was not cold enough, the salad was not fresh and had like 4 slices of tomato. Not worth the price. Tandoori was good though hence the rating. Cutlery were not so clean.
Purpledonnamode
Super friendly service and extremely delicious food. They easily accomodate vegans and have loads of choice on the menu. We ate here 4 times during our week in Auckland! We highly recommend this place!
Jazz
Worst food i have ever had. Ordered veg Manchurian and found heavy amount of salt in there so couldn't eat. Then jumped onto mains. Ordered karahi chicken and it was the first time when I found that karahi chicken has gravy in it. Strange!!!! Then one of the staff member changed it to chicken tikka masala according to them but to me it seems butter chicken.no doubt the ladies were good at the customer service but you mist train your chef how to handle in busy time. I have been going to your branch in manakau from past 4-5 years. Never had any complaints. One time there was chicken which was uncooked so i informed the manager and later she gave me refund for that but here nothing!!<br/>Cheers

I love this place. One of my favorite Indian restaurants. I always go here. Food is exceptional and service is always good. Staff are friendly and it's a really nice cozy atmosphere.
Monique Neal
Best Indian food ever! I literally sit on a bus for an hour and a half just to eat here and bus back! Staff are super friendly and the food is AMAZING! You know it’s good when there are Indians eating at an Indian restaurant too! $12.50 lunch including naan and a drink... hard to not even try it once!!
Eric Lee
Had the student lunch deal and was quite satisfied with the portion size although I believe more rice could have been added. Was a good experience overall but the waitress messed up my friends drink order even though we reminded her. Think writing down orders might have been a better way too go. Overall a decent experience.
Amy Brar
Nice place for dine .went their with friends . Very good value for money as well. I must say it is the best Indian restaurant . Nice dine in area .
Lo9ve3r 4s
Just consistently good, hot, cheap Indian food. Portion sizes look small but we always leave feeling full. Can't find better value for money anywhere else in the city. Quality is top notch every time. Tikka masala is our favourite
Ruthvik Chukkapalli
Awesome restaurant. Though it is small and not much crowd, the food was really tasty. All the credit goes to chef. Also lady that served us was very polite and suggested many dishes to order. On whole, recommending this restaurant to everyone.
Ravneet Kaur
Hot food served. Great service. Love the food. Friendly staff. Beautiful ambiance. Best place to visit with family and friends. Wish to visit again to this place
B.reihana
I ordered mild and hot super hot curry, quite disappointing. Prompt delivery and nice delivery driver. Customer service was great and it was unfortunate that she did not take down our order correctly in regards to the curry. It was almost in edible.
Margeaux Frizelle
Was really looking forward to this but the food was pretty average. Naan tasted like baking powder and was weird. The vege starter platter was pretty good!! Except for the huge chunk of raw onion.
Akshit Chopra
I would have never rated this place 3 but yesterday evening Cream Chicken and Kadai Paneer was flavourless. I have been here on previous occasions, but the food had never been soo tasteless. Service was prompt, and rest of our dishes Chicken Tikka Masala, Amritsari Fish and Veg Manchurian was tasty.
Mandeep Singh Bhinder
Best creamy chicken I ever had, value for money and their staff and service is amazing... If you are really hungry late night you know where to call.. Keep up the good services guys...
Saurabh Som
The chicken biryani and achaari chicken tikka is amazing. <br/><br/>Do give it a try. <br/><br/>The food is generally on spicy side. So make sure you tell them to make it mild otherwise it can get you cry. <br/><br/>Overall I love this place.
Harmeet Singh Sethi
Best restaurant to visit with your family and friends. Reasonable price good service and atmosphere. Best place to celebrate. Quick delivery service.
Dini
Really good Indian food, with proper Indian flavors and spices. They do not disappoint! They can cater for dietary requirements, staff are friendly and quite a nice, but simple layout.

I was walking the streets of Auckland after work during the Cricket World Cup and to my delight, I saw the familiar Chawla's logo.<br/><br/>Of course we had to try it. So we jumped in.<br/><br/>I was wondering if the food would taste the same as in Chandigarh and Delhi.<br/><br/>To their credit, the food tasted just the same.<br/><br/>Of course they asked us if we wanted our food to be Indian spicy or mild like the Kiwis like it.<br/><br/>The service was good, the food was good, the heart was delighted. No weight was lost during this visit.<br/><br/>A fat big hearted Punjabi tip was given at the end of it.<br/><br/>Everybody was smiling at the end of dinner. Hopefully.
Tan.ned
Kind of good service. The place seems really gloomy. Good value for money though :D nice selection of food. Kinda speedy food service. I like their naan bread too. It's an ok place
Miss Kiki
Chawla's is one of the highest rated Indian restaurants close my home. Since my local, dodgy foodcourt, takeaway changed owners and the food went downhill I knew I had to fulfil my cravings from elsewhere.<br/>We ordered butter chicken hot, malai kofta mild and aloo prantha. Not only did it exceed my expectations, it was also a lot better than I used to get from my local dodgy foodcourt. It was the first time having aloo prantha and won't be my last!
Ankur Mishra
I always find this place amazing. The taste is great and authentic, and is made for indian taste buds. The starters menu is great, and diverse main course. The only problem is the serve time, which can be annoying if you are hungry. But if you have no problem with that, you will definitely enjoy dining here. My favorite are the sweets, and Hyderabad biryani.
Akshay Maxwell Massey
Ordered the Chawla specialty - Creme chicken and it was really really bad...was completely bland, even after ordering it "Hot". You say that's not a reason to repeat the word "really", well how bout this - it was like a super thick chicken broth with no taste, not even salt. <br/><br/>And while I understand that because its cooked in milk and creme, it will not be as hot or spicy as other curries, you'd expect a lot more from one of the most expensive dishes on the menu and so called specialty. The description also says cooked in black pepper and traditional spices, except there was no taste of black pepper or any spices. The lachha paratha was very average, dry and falling to pieces when I got it...could be because the flour was old. The vinegar onions (god only knows why they are on the menu), were old and stale, it also looked like before packing someone looked at it and cut off the areas of the onions which were dissolving in vinegar....left a very bad taste in the mouth; although it actually had a taste in comparison to the chicken dish. My advise in two words: Do Better!
Sabin Shrestha
Shit food, very very very time consuming and a bit pricey too. Used to have good food so was worth but now takes 25mins to serve a small dessert.
Saurabhpanesar18985
Amazing service and awesome food...... best customer service and would really live to go there again. Getting best indian taste in auckland<br/>Thanks
Tavita Milford
I ordered a full Tandoori Chicken there one time and it was spicy, just the way I like it. The place is really clean and their staff are kind and friendly. A bit pricey, but worth it.
Abhilash Rao
They serve authentic Indian food. Ordered a lamb biryani and it was really good... The quantity and the quality of the food was great.. would totally recommend...
Nidhi Mahi
Food is tasteless & no attention to detail. Used to be my favourite spot for dinner 1 year back when management changed the whole standard gone of this restaurant. Went for dinner and ordered chilli paneer , it was awful full of salt not spicy & no plating or garnishing done for that they just put it on plate as it is from cooking pan. in curried I ordered  Kadhai Paneer it was full of onions & chef forgot to put peppers when we asked politely that there are no peppers they have just taken the curry and bring it back putting peppers in it on the top so they haven't shown any courtesy to give us new curry or do something like any discount or atleast remake the curry .I believe sorry is not the option if you are not giving the dish according to description .Before Restaurant was so good I went like every week before celebrated my friend's bday there as well but now no good to go there.
Bhagyesh Prabhumirashi
Been here for dinner with my friends ordered tandoori prawns chicken tikka masala shahi paneer and dal makhni along with naan. And pista kulfi as a dessert. Prawns was overcooked anx tasteless however main course was tasty, good in quantity. Pista Kulfi was not at all look and taste like pista kulfi. I think they need to improve on dessert and starters.

I am from wellington and visited auckland with my family for holidays. Last night i visited this restaurant (chawlas restaurant )to pick up my takeaway.<br/>I had bad experience with food, all garlic naan were burnt and vegetable jalfrezy was not cooked properly and veges inside were very raw. Malai kofta balls were too hard and used vegetable knife to cut it.<br/>All in nutshell i have heard alot for them but really bad experience.
Sarah S
Dined here with my partner lunch, it was a chilly afternoon so it was perfect weather for curry. Chawlas has a lunch special which is excellent value for money, for $12.00 you get curry, naan, a popadom, rice & a soft drink. We arrived just after two so it was a fairly late lunch however the restaurant was still open & we were waived toward a table. The waitress was quite abrupt & basically threw some menus down, she then told us the kitchen was closing so we had to be quick too order, we didn't have a problem with this but it would have been nice to tell us when we walked in rather than after we had sat down as we might have gone somewhere else had we known. We both had butter chicken. I had mild & my partner had hot. The food was served quickly & was enjoyable. There wasn't much meat in the curry I think I counted four pieces of chicken in mine. This wasn't a big deal as it was a special & there was naan, popadom and rice to soak up the sauce with. The decor in the restaurant is quite nice & overall we warmed up with an enjoyable meal at a reasonable price.
Canistan Charles
I had chicken korma with naan n rice for my lunch. Gravy ws really creamy bt pieces of chicken was not tht mch gd, not freshly cooked chicken. Previously we had butter chicken there, the quantity of food ws really amazing, bt this time really disappointed coz of the tasteless chicken pieces.
Bex Ellis
Casual dining. This little place suited its purpose for a night out with the girls. We were a bit rowdy and the place was empty enough if didn't really matter. The food was good enough for the night but I wouldn't go there as a regular. No dishes really stand out as amazing but the staff were friendly and welcoming so they get points for that.
Amber Savage
Thank you for the great service and food. I can now highly recommend the butter chicken & garlic naan. You now have a loyal customer!!! Yum. 👍
Kevin R
Excellent meal as it always is, thank you Chawlas, service is fantastic, friendly helpfully staff, food is delicious, tasty, and the atmosphere is great

Husband and I came here for Christmas Eve, and it made for a wonderful, and forgettable experience.<br/><br/>The interior was dimly lit with romantic ambiance. <br/><br/>The menu was extensive, with lots of vegetarian options, and some specialty dishes that you do not find at other Indian restaurants.<br/><br/>My recommendations are their cream paneer and tikka masala, super creamy and flavorful. Though beware the masala really is quite spicy!<br/><br/>Their naan breads are soft and buttery too, the perfect complement to their curries.<br/><br/>They do lunch deals and specials for students, just remember to bring your ID card. We also had takeaway from this place the other day, and the standard did not disappoint. Would be a lot more of that in the future!
Jasmine Tay-Paepae
Their curries are yummy, especially chicken tikka masala. I have bought takeaways from this place a couple of times and every time we order the lunch special, it comes with a drink. But since they don't have cans, they will pour you a cup of soft drink into a plastic cup for you to takeaway - find that a bit odd.
ZL
Average food I guess ok for its money's worth. The staff are usually also smiling and ok with customer service.<br/><br/>However, one time we decided to go for a late night snack and were using their wifi. When we became the last customers (even though it was before closing time) they closed the wifi in a bid to get us out. In doing so they also managed to close their EFTPOS machine which was kind of funny. Found it pretty rude, and have not been back since.
Elisabeth Stoddart
We had a lovely meal. Excellent service - friendly and helpful but discrete. Delicious food and no after-effects (often the case in low-quality indians). Free poppadoms and rice with the meal. Nice touch. Will definitely be returning.

Chawla's was an extraordinary experience! Very rarely do you come across a restaurant with Amazing options, perfect quantity, exquisite taste and warm service. Chawla has all of that and more. If you're looking for a great Indian cuisine experience, look no further, your search ends here.

We were in Auckland for a couple of days and were searching for a vegetarian friendly place after having been living off bread and pizzas for a week. <br/>We went to Chawla's a couple of times and tried their kadhai paneer, dal makhani, butter naan, jeera rice, etc. The food was served quick and hot by friendly staff. The food is rich, yum and authentic! So, if you are in Auckland and missing Indian food, this place is a must visit!<br/><br/>Cheers!
José Ignacio Petitpas Ramirez
The butter chicken is amazing, i have tried hundreds of butter chicken and i do cook it also myself with a great recipe shared from a friend chef from India, im a chef as well and i can tell this butter chicken is made with every single ingredient cooked perfectly, you can taste the caju nut paste, the chat masala and garam masala, the amount of methi is perfect too, the chicken is so soft, not over cooked came beautifully delivered to my door with a butter and garlic naan i specially requested and even is not in the menu they prepare it for me. Really kind of them. I Highly recommend this restaurant.
Jasnoor Singh
Must try the amritsari fish, the quantity was less but the quality was perfect. The speciality creamy chicken was good but I liked rarra chicken more since I like a bit spicy food. Overall great experience. Staff was friendly and the traditional Indian ambiance feels good.
Servelan
Love the food and service in this place! I've been here twice and the food is beautiful, tasty and flavoursome! I had the Lamb Rohan Josh and the butter naan. More than enough for one person and reasonably priced. Would definitely come here again as it's close to the Civic, Aotea Centre and SkyCity
Bhavin Patel
Had dinner last night...have ordered creamy chicken and curry suggested by Chawla staff...it was best curry...and service was great too..I'll definitely come back with friend's. <br/>Appreciate restaurant manager efforts for maintaining very tide and clean restaurant. <br/>I must say will definitely visit again with family and friends <br/><br/>Thanks <br/>Bhavin Patel <br/>

I ordered the Malai Koftas as a main dish for takeaway to find the dish to consist of only four very small flat Koftas swimming in an ocean of sauce proportionate to 80% of the takeaway container.<br/><br/>My initial reaction was to sift through the sauce to try to find them all, followed by shock when I realised this was all that had been provided as a 'main' dish.<br/><br/>The end product was a plate with an unfeasibly small quantity of food on it befitting an entree size that in no way looked sufficient yet alone appetising.<br/><br/>The response when I called to complain was a reactionary clarification that this was indeed their main size dish. There was no acknowledgement of the concern nor attempt to address it - possibly due to young staff never experiencing a real complaint or expression of concern before. Regardless, it was still mismanaged.<br/><br/>A bad dining experience unfortunately, befit of an inability to look at the presentation of their own end product as well as an unawareness as to the quality and quantity of what is being served elsewhere in their market as a standard offering.<br/><br/>
Peking Quack
Chicken malai tikka is so good! With cheese and garlic naan!!!<br/>Also got lamb korma which was pretty good but couldnt finish it all after the tikka
Joana Ginu Thomas
Had the prawns tandoori and chicken kadai. Food was excellent. Staff was very friendly. Portion size was good as well. Food was not too oily. Will def come again.
Chantelle Bergan
Visiting in town for the night and went here based on reviews here (and closeness to hotel). We had the Vege Paneer Butter Masala which had lots of flavour and a nice kick to it (for a mild), and the Vege Cream Paneer which was really nice. A serve of rice and 2 garlic naans, the naans were tasty but a bit thinner than what I'm use to. Only downside would be the table was a bit far from the booth seat so I spilt some sauce on my clothes. Overall very happy, good portion size, nice service and venue.
Michael Gask
Went to Chawla's last night for the first time. Will definitely go again.<br/>There service was quick and professional, but also very friendly. After ordering, the food came very quickly, but they didn't rush us, and didn't move us quickly off the table once we'd finished, which was nice (although it wasn't busy, as we were dining early). We were lucky it wasn't busy, as we were able to have a booth for the two of us.<br/><br/>The food was great: very good portions, and very flavoursome. I had Paneer Tikka Masala and the sauce was very thick and had a great tomatoey flavour. Unlike some restaurants, there was plenty of paneer cubes, which had a very nice firm texture. I asked for medium, and it was on the hot side of that. I was very happy with that, but it's worth keeping in mind if you don't want anything too spicy. My partner had Chicken Saagwala, and again, he was very happy with that choice. Plenty of well-flavoured chicken, and a lovely green colour to the gravy. Like mine, the medium was on the hot side, but that's how we like it, so we were happy. :)<br/><br/>Thanks, we'll definitely be back to try some of the other dishes on the menu. After seeing my partner's Saagwala, I'm keen to try the Palak Paneer.
Er Naman Nautiyal
The food was very good. Wide choice and certainly authentic looking and tasting. Service was warm and friendly.I would recommend this restaurant for those looking for a flavour of Indian curry or dishes.Hope to see you soon.
Vinay Saini
My friend recomend me chawlas. The food i had was mouthwatering and presentation was great. More over the customer service i received was excellent. Very polite and humble. I think they have made one more loyal customer. If i had any party arrangement surly ill contact them. <br/>Hope they continue with great service.<br/>😊
Rohit Kumar
My first visit to this restaurant and I must say I am not impressed with the quality n flavor of food. However the front staff was very proactive n soft spoken. Ordered Chicken Rara which was below average, very little salt n no balance of spices, watery gravy (ideally rara should be dryish, plz correct me if I am wrong) and pieces of chopped onions were visible. Rice were not cooked properly either. After I came back to my hotel, I scrolled through their website and found that they advertise to give 10% discount for customers visiting for first time, no discounts were given in my case. I went there with high expectaion but was very disappointed. First n last time, wont be coming back here for sure.
Anita
I had the lunch special meal. The curry was very rich but not bad. Loved the Naan bread. Service was good. Staff were friendly and has knowledge about the menu.
Samuel Ashley
Absolutely the best curry I've ever had in New Zealand. Thank you very much. Customer service was brilliant and the food came out very quickly. Would definitely recommend this to anyone to give a try :)
Thegreeats
Average as Indian cuisine<br/>We had the happy hour deal which is 5-7.30pm and u get a choice of curry and a tap beer.<br/>We asked if we can get a non alcoholic option and lady informed us they usually don't but she will allow it which was nice<br/>We ordered butter chicken and sauce was a bit zesty and portion was quite small but then it was a cheap meal so I won't complain. Sauce was very tomatoey. .maybe that's why it gave off that zesty / sour after taste.<br/>Waitress was friendly but took a while to come get our order<br/>If you're in CBD wanting Indian there are better options<br/>
CatalinaAlejandra GonzalezJaramillo

We've been to Chawla's twice in a row. The food was very delicious, the staff very friendly and it has a good atmosphere and decoration. When I come back to Auckland, I will probably come here again. Thank you
Amy Josiane Whiting
Amazing service and hands down the best Indian food I've ever had. I was just traveling through Auckland and considered never leaving so that I could eat their Channa Masala for the rest of my life on earth. Super accommodating to vegan eating as well, I LOVE THIS PLACE.
Camilla Stimpson
This was my first time having Indian food, and it was SO good! They definitely set the bar high for future Indian restaurants I ate at. They have a large menu with a variety of food so there is something for everyone and anyone. The food is well made and delicious. Naan bread? So good. And the service is phenomenal! My friend and I have gotten pretty close to them and love them.
Sagar Acharya
Really amazing ambience 😍 Being an Indian when you get such place its a Bliss Moment! Guys one suggestion it was a bit hot inside 😣 We ordered a veg birayni and chicken biryani, looking at the quantity of the serving which was really good and plus the flavour and taste. Rice was perfectly cooked for a biryani. Felt like eating in India 😍
Deepak Pratap
Awesome food...great service and good people.<br/>Try the Lamb Briyani!! It is awesome and absolutely devine!<br/>Lunch options are also great☺☺☺☺☺☺☺☺
Larry Jacobs
Had a really  good meal at this restaurant.  Good inexpensive wine list and efficient service made for a very nice evening.  Friendly staff.
Natalia NatNat
This place is great if you go with somebody who knows what the real deal is. I love paneer (vegetarian option) & madras paneer (if you are not a fan of paneer- go for chicken) is my favourite from this place. Biriyani is another dish that you should try from here. Unfortunately sometimes I get a bad tummy after eating there, so watch out 😉
Sai Kiran
Great food, good ambience and a friendly staff is what you find at Chawla's. I visit Chawla's quite often and love their prawn biryani to the fullest.
Ingrid Lockhart
Visiting Aukland, we went to Chawla's after passing it on the street and deciding we wanted to try Indian Food.  We were very happy with our meal and the wait staff's helpfulness in explaining their various dishes. It was delicious and a great value.  My husband wanted 'spicy' and I prefer mild, so we were guided to scrumptious choices.   Thank you!
Param Doshi
We are vegetarian jains, they served us well. Options were limited but they tried to give us whatever best they could. Food is nice and works well for someone craving Indian in a far of land.
Hharkirat Siingh
Wow the yummy chawla's in Auckland!! Heard about it and straightaway went for its food. Their specialty is cream chicken and no wonder it was a special treat! All the punjabi's go and hit this place asap! And for indian food lovers - put this place on your try list!
Brenden Bennett
Very friendly staff! The drinks and food came right away and the servers suggestions were very good! We had the Lamb Rogan Josh and the Cream Chicken, both were delicious! Highly recommended!
Muhammad Bilal
Love this place. Amazing value for money. I have tried pretty much everything on their menu and my favorite are Lamb Rogan josh and daal. I must say they have best Lamb in town. The staff are happy and a pleasure to deal with I love the place :)
Debsjunkyard
Food was tasty but with little meat.<br/><br/>$12 lunch is really $13 if you have lamb. <br/><br/>Yes they do state it on the menu but it's in such small writing you'd never notice it until you pay.
Basit Ameen
Would like to describe in a single word 'SUPERB'<br/>Food taste 5/5<br/>Service 5/5<br/>Quality 5/5<br/><br/>I would recommand to all quality food lovers..<br/><br/>100* likes :)
Parik Andhare
I have been to this place a couple of times and the food has been good. This is more “value for money” place. I had the “Chicken malai tikka”, it was good but nothing special. The “malai” was mostly put on top before serving which was a little let down. Next I ordered the Chicken tikka masala, which was good. The chicken was actually Chicken Tikka pieces in a decent gravy. My wife ordered the “Hara bhara kebab” and it was good, but the best dish of the day was the Malai Kofta and the gravy was best – milk, smooth and nicely spiced. <br/>Go to this place for a decent Indian meal. Service is pretty good and the servers are courteous. <br/><br/>Pros –<br/>Cheap <br/>Decent food <br/>Good service<br/>Great for European/local NZ  taste buds<br/><br/>Cons –<br/>Not exactly the “authentic” Indian taste especially for Indian people<br/>Few dishes aren’t as authentic as you would expect
Mmmfood
I often go to eat at Chawla's. It is hands down my favourite Indian restaurant in Auckland. The food is cooked to perfection and the service is excellent. I highly recommend the Lamb Saagwala, Chicken Jalfrezi and Cream Chicken (and anything else you can find on the menu, really). The staff is very friendly and you never have to wait long to be served. The atmosphere at this cute little restaurant is also just right. The bottom line is, I have never eaten this frequently at any other restaurant, I keep coming back, and that pretty much speaks for itself, doesn't it?
Sonia
Love the food and service ! Got a grab one voucher this time . Most restaurants cut on quantity when they do vouchers but this one didn't 😄. Food came in no time and was just as we wanted ! Great work , great service , great food !
James Lee
Overall, it is a nice Indian restaurant. We enjoyed the food. <br/>But I agree with the previous review. The serving size is not really good for that price. <br/>Moreover, the green salad for $7 was really disappointing. It was basically a couple slices of cucumber and tomato with some lettuce. That's all for $7. <br/>Apart of that, everything was good. Nice friendly staff, yummy curries.
Jv Dorado Full
Dining at Chawla's was my first time trying authentic Indian cuisine. I am not a curry person but I must say, it was a great experience. My co-workers and I met the owner as well. He was very accommodating and same with his staff. I will be coming back with more friends.
Satinderpal Pannu
Great taste and best customer service in town. The food was absolutely mouth watering and special thanks to the manager Salwinder kaur<br/>😀😀😀

Not very impressed with the quantity of food served here. Good decorum, courteous staff, good service but the negative is the quantity. I'd like to see them improve on this.
OmiTa Dutt
It is the one of best indian resturant I have been to. Food is really good and up to the expectations and they have the best customer service which I would give an A+. Would recommend it to everyone to go there.

Great restaurant, great food, regular favourite with people in the building I work in. Never had any issues and they do a decent lunch special menu! Very good at making things spicy while preserving the flavour of the food, love it 👌👌

Been here for quite few times now... Rather quite frequently... But finally penning this review today. The food is good. Dal makhani being the highlight... Can have unlimited refills of it... Just scrumptious... The other veg options too are good. Quantity too is quite good and absolute value for money. Good service and absolute satisfaction with the place... Worth a visit for sure...
Vivek
Good food , nice ambiance and quite friendly staff. The variety in food especially the vegetarian curries is well appreciated. However the quantity of food is less if i see the price i paid for.<br/><br/>I would love to visit here again and try some more vegan option.

Really delicious Indian food and the friendliest staff. So many vegetarian options. Made a tasty palak paneer and the naan bread was hot and fresh. Thank you!

03/09/2015 What a disappointment. I had a takeaway lunch today special for $12 I thought it's a good value for money but the food was tasteless n I was missing my soft drink too. Naan was too thick . no seasoning n no flavor... I will NEVER recommend this place to anyone .<br/>24/08/2017 UPDATE - a big change in their service and food quality. Very tasteful and yummy food. Will surely visit this place more often now :-)

Another amazing Indian restaurant with a deep history towards it. Based on Wellesley street next to a bustling queen street. Good place for Indian food lovers.

I had great experience dining at Chawla's, they never cease to amaze with their food. Great selection of curry with great spice flavour, various choices of curry and preferences for everyone's personal liking. I dine in with my friends & family. Very friendly service and Its a place that you could visit again and again. <br/><br/>One of my favourite dessert is "Gulab Jamun", a nice way to finish the meal :)

We've been here last night with my 2 friends to have dinner..a great location with a friendly staff plus amazing food will make your tummy happy.. the place is quite small but great place to have your meal.. service is quick..<br/>

Visited Chawla's for lunch and we were not disappointed. Great service despite coming to the restaurant 5 minutes before closing time. One of the most authentic tasting Indian food.

I had Butter Chicken and it was divine. Maybe they should change the name to 'Divine Chicken'. Portion was a bit small but the flavour was just great. <br/><br/>Butter Chicken, just the way it should be.

I went there last night and ate the best Butter chicken, Chicken Birayani is awesome. I really enjoyed the food, service is great and staff is very professional.<br/>Highly recommended. keep it up

This is probably one of my favourite Indian restaurant in Auckland. The food is so delicious and the prices are not bad either. Recently Me and my friends had dinner there and we all enjoyed it. Staff people are very nice and great customer service standards. Keep up the good work guys.<br/>Highly recommended!<br/>

Whenever I visited Chawla's something get something new to Experience and this time coming in with high hopes I was very impressed. The ambiance was chilled, fun and relaxing without being pretentious, as to be expected of any good fine dining establishments. They made a good use of the narrow dining space Beautiful decor, tables and Especially the Collections of Songs. Service was friendly, attentive without being overburdened. Most of all the staffs were very well drilled in every single aspects of their service, food and drinks (not just the Beer but the other Mock-tails from the bar as well). And I Really Want to Thanks to your Manager Miss Salwinderpreet Kaur Because the way she attended all our queries related to food and the way she presented the food that was Awesome..<br/>So. Allover service was good and yes definitely come again with mah new bunch of friends.<br/><br/>Thanks  & Regards,<br/>  Gurveen Singh<br/>(0210-854-0034)

HIGH PRICE FOR MODERATE FOOD..... GIrl at the counter is always busy with the screen...possibly calculating..the profits...she forgets the customers........decoration is awesome...wish the food was the same..not going again sorry

Grabbed a few takeaways. Really enjoyed the curries, one of the better ones we've tried in the CBD. Portions not the biggest but flavour of the curries were really good and the lamb and chicken both very tender and falling apart.
Jaspreet Singh
Went there after a while wasn't happy the quality and taste have declined very badly. Not very happy it used to be good but it has sadly changed
Victoria
Very surprised, great Indian. We ordered the chicken kadai and lamb rogan josh as well as naan to share. We had takeaway so can't comment on in house service or ambience but very impressed with the flavour and quality. The lamb and chicken both falling apart tender and good complexity of flavours.<br/>Naan was best I've had so far but probably better again in house. Naan was just like I like it, chewy, buttery and light. <br/><br/>Will be our top pick for Indian in the CBD.

Lovely place to dine in and the taste is amazing I just love the food of chawla . I love the ambience of all the branches and love the hospitality service .

Great place. The food is awesome. Overall a very good experience. Will definitely keep going. Creamy chicken stands out. Will go for other curries next time.
Grouchocrispy
Pleasantly surprised by the quality of the Rogan Josh. The lamb was unusually tender and cooked well. The flavour quite rich and full. Service was excellent too, except that they added butter to the naan when I'd asked them not to. But I forgive them cause they did everything else right!<br/>I will be back!

This is possibly one of the best Chili Chicken meals I have had. Apart from a venue in the Hawkes Bay. Chawla's really does go the extra mile with the quality of food and the service. Yes it was Hot, but that is what I asked for! The flavours were mouthwatering and I have been back many times. I notice they have opened another venue in Manukau. Well done to the Chefs and Staff - you have done exceptionally well.
Aaron Spence
Spectacular meal. Real Indian, not Indian sauce in a packet. The flavours are amazing. The staff are sensational. Had a wonderful dinner and a wonderful evening.
Amandeep Bansal
I have eaten there many times and every time I get same quality food which I s utterly delicious.! Only thing I don't like is parking restrictions.. But I really don't mind paying it for such great food..!

Went there for lunch <br/>$10.90 deal for students <br/>Service was awesome <br/><br/>the waitress recommended the chicken tikka Marsala <br/>tasted like fresh chillies and capsicum smokey-ness <br/>Would recommend it for people who don't like the overly creamy curries <br/><br/>Also had the chicken korma <br/>first bite was really good, I don't like having too much cream in mine so I couldn't finish it. <br/>but you could tell it was fresh <br/>lovely aroma and had bits of green herbs/leafy bits throughout. Chicken was yum <br/><br/>they have the best Naan bread ever ~ super crispy on one side and soft chewiness on the other brushed with some ghee looking stuff <br/>poppadoms were good too. <br/><br/>I would come again for the naan bread !!! <br/><br/>Btw <br/>it's mild, medium, hot <br/><br/>we both had medium. It was fine to begin with but got really spicy in the end <br/>medium is like less than what Korean shinram cup noodles would be <br/>The sugarcane cube and mint candy at the counter helps with calming the spice

Dropped by and had a lunch with my boyfriend. I had always no resistance to the smell of curry. It was so nice! I ordered butter chicken curry and he grabbed lamb one. It was fine in general though the cracker thing was too salty. <br/>Service:3/5<br/>Price:3.5/5<br/>Environment:2/5

By far the best Indian restaurant I've been to, their butter chicken is so tasty compared to the others, their sauces are very uniquely done with just the right amount of spices on it. Very very much recommended!!!!!!?????<br/>

I often visit there. The quality of food is so good. Even today I went there for lunch with my mates. Here you can taste very yummy indian food as well as you can enjoy siting in an environment surrounded with indian photographs and indian traditional decorations on walls.

Had gone once last year and once yesterday. Service is good, food quality and quantity has detoriated. Not going back or recommending. Disappointed

I had such a beautiful meal here that I came back 3 more times. The food is SO delicious and so authentic and full of flavour. This is one of the best indian restaurants in NZ that I have ever eaten at. The garlic naan was just out of this world. I have only had indian this good overseas- definitely give it a go. My favourite was the tika masala. Also the staff were wonderful.

Great food, service & atmosphere. <br/>I had a pretty dismal experience here last year with some bland overly buttery curries, but they must have changed something in the kitchen because my recent experience was fantastic. <br/>We tried two curries, Malai kofta and Butter Chicken. Both had a really good balance of spices. Best curries I've had in awhile.
Rebecca Turner
Really yummy food! Tasty curry and high quality meat, I was really impressed. =) The Chawla starter sizzling plate was great, and I was stoaked they had the dry fruit naan that hardly anyone makes on the menu!
Mark Wilson
Great food, good portions and nice service. Worth a try if your into your indian food. Try the cheese nan also as its up there with the best iv had.
Kerrod Don
As my first experience of Indian food in New Zealand, I was very impressed with the quality of the food. The cheese Naan was very good, one of the best I've had, as well as the butter chicken. Portion size was very generous and was more than enough. Staff were friendly also.
Mike Holding
Great food and lovely atmosphere, good prices on the specials though $3 to replace a soft drink included with a lunch meal with a soda water is far too steep and desperately needs to be addressed especially as I was unaware there was any price difference at all, I did point this out at the till but let's just say service could be better.<br/><br/>Service: 1/5<br/><br/><br/><br/>Wait time: 5/5<br/><br/><br/><br/>Environment: 4/5<br/><br/><br/><br/>Food Quality: 4/5<br/><br/><br/><br/>Price range: $12+ pp (lunch)

We are regulars that go to this restaurant and the service we received last night was silly.<br/><br/>We were asked if we wanted drinks, which we didn't we politely said no and were given dirty looks and rude remarks.<br/>They are WAY too pushy, you are a restaurant not a sales company, if we want extra nann we will ask you stop pushing it in our face! We do not want an indian cola or a mango lassi, if we did we would ask you. Very rude staff must be there purely for the money and not to build a good company name. <br/><br/>We were there with 4 people and given enough rice for MAYBE 2 people and then charged for extra rice... <br/><br/>There are many indian restaurants in the city and we will be taking our business elsewhere and all our recommendations will to be to NOT go there anymore. It's a shame because we would go there at least once a week but ignorant staff like that will not get our service anymore... Indian food is everywhere in the city so we will not miss out that's for sure. <br/><br/>Rude rude staff.
Tony Ma
Their curry is hot! which is the best part I love about this place!<br/><br/>I have made over 3 group bookings here within the past month, and the staff have been helpful, the restaurant is a little dark at the back, so sit near the back if you are on a date, or sit near the front of the restaurant if you are here with friends to chat<br/><br/>Service: 4/5<br/><br/>Wait time: 3/5<br/><br/>Environment: 4/5<br/><br/>Food Quality: 4/5<br/><br/>Food Quantity: 4/5<br/><br/>Price range: $20+ pp

What an amazing experience it was, Fantastic customer service, authentic indian curry, mind blowing it was, the taste of cream chicken still on taste buds and very nice and decent indian guy in turban, very much appreciate his customer service and friendly behavior. <br/>Hats off to the good effort to bring awesome indian food to the plates. <br/>Thanks and Good luck<br/>Oliver p.

We called the restaurant and asked what time is the last dine in order. We arrived a few minutes after the said time 10.45 tonight a Saturday and ordered two curries, 3 naans and a salad between the four of us. As two of us had been before we knew the portions were large so didn't order more curries. The cunning waitress added a third dish which we questioned when she repeated the order. We pointed out that we didn't order the additional dish. She then comes back and informs us that the chef requires us to order another curry because they had kept two chefs for us. We were a bit amused to say the least as an additional four patrons had entered the restaurant after us, so we asked to speak to the manager. Enter Sunny the manager who confirmed very rudely that we had to order another curry and that this was the policy. We asked to cancel the order and took our business elsewhere. Sunny's response a shrug of the shoulder and a "ok". Needless to say we won't be back <br/>and would recommend stearing well clear until they change managers and food quotas!!!!!

Great job done by chawlas, who provided us with mouth watering dishes with real Indian flavors coming up in our plates, Hats off you guys...<br/><br/>With really warm and welcoming customer service.<br/><br/>Love to visit again and again

Food is extra ordinary in this restaurant. The taste is perfect with all the spices equally touching the tongue. The items used in the dishes are really fresh which I could easily grab from its taste. Also, the waiters are so good and kind to the customers. I would not only appreciate them, but also thank all the people behind the restaurant for giving wonderful food to us. <br/><br/>I will often visit this restaurant, at least once in 3 days :)

Been here 2 times so far. The menu has great choices. Had non-veg and veg mains with Rice, Naan and Roti. The desert such as Mango Kulfi is as it should be with nice presentation. <br/><br/>The food has an authentic and fresh flavor. Their complimentary sides are great too and much appreciated along with their warm and welcoming customer service! The serving time can be slow when at half capacity. The decor (apart from the assortment of alcoholic drinks!) in the restaurant evokes a true feeling of India too. The prices are reasonable too! Overall, I definitely recommend this Indian restaurant than others in the CBD.

Went to Chawlas Restaurant after a movie one night (went around 8.30pm). We ordered Creamy Chicken, Rarra Chicken, Butter Paneer, Rogan Josh and Chicken Tikka.<br/><br/>The service was slightly slow and the waiters did forget to give us rice after our curries had been served but it was quickly noticed and dealt with. Otherwise the waiters/waitresses were very friendly and helpful, recommending dishes and explaining ones we weren't sure about.<br/><br/>The food was delicious. Good quality and a very good quantity for what you are paying. The creamy chicken I personally would not be able to eat alone as it is quite rich for my tastes but was still lovely. <br/><br/>The deals and discounts they have are also very good and overall I would definitely recommend this restaurant. Will come back again :)

We waited more than an hour for our food....and it was not good. Very few customers and still we waited. Nice owners but doesn't make up for a bad time and good money spent. Would never go back.

Four of us had lunch today (Tuesday), $16 each for a curry, a beer, two poppadoms, one chapati and (for me) chicken saagwala and rice. Food was delicious, service prompt and couldn't really fault it. We were the only pink faces there, all the other diners looked Indian which I usually reckon is a good sign. Will definitely go again. The others had a Chcken Korma, a chicken tikka masala and a rogen josh and all said it was excellent,

Went here end of sept with my colleagues who are all keen eaters of Indian food all over the globe. Firstly must say some of these reviews on here seem very suspect and suspicious as the food was very average, I could only be honest it is not even at the level of Shamiana in a food court. <br/><br/>Restaurant presentation was simple, okay staff but paid little attention to the quality of food. Slow service. Would not go out of my way to eat here. Nothing special.
Vikz
Food is authentic Indian style, really tasty and fresh. Love the décor, great music, staff were extremely friendly and service was excellent. Great price too...<br/>The only extra I would've liked would be some chutneys - tamarind, mango, maybe a lime pickle on offer?<br/>Recommend the butter chicken (not Kiwi style like you might be used to, far superior to that!) and the Malai Kofta. Plus its great to see Indian drinks on the menu...'Limca' and 'Thumbs Up'. Will defo return for another Indian experience!!

Well done. It's great to see a restaurant which has the courage to show what authentic Indian food is. After a very long time tasted some fabulous food. Liked the fact that they don't ask Mild, medium or Hot. As I believe, cuisine should be served as it should be, not tailored to mild it down or heat it up. Food is appreciated when it has the right flavors and seasoning. Chawlas Indian Restaurant showcases the cuisine very well. Service is great. Personal and friendly. Not pushy at all. Will definitely visit again and again. If one has a craving for true Indian food, this is a must visit Restaurant. I am convinced they'll maintain the standards.

Excellent food &amp; excellent service. Mr. Singh is very polite and gives good recommendations. We ordered Indian medium hot &amp; that is exactly what was served. We will definitely visit again. Keep it up!!

Authentic Indian taste. We had Cream chicken,Rarra Chicken,Malai Kabab,Black dal &amp; Palam Paneer.<br/>All too good to be true:)Most importantly they would serve with a Smile. The staff were very polite as well. They made us sit &amp; wait we waited for our take away &amp; asked us for drinks etc.Thats the service we miss in most restaurants

Delicious, magnificent, authentic and fresh come into mind when describing the food at Chawlas. <br/><br/>Ordering a range of vegetarian dishes, each one appeared to be made with an independent base (unlike other Indian restaurants) which provided each dish with their unique flavour. <br/><br/>The service is excellent and friendly.<br/><br/>Would I recommend to a friend, YES! and I will be joining them for round two.
GAry Hill
Awesome food. Not your usual ,over creamy ,slops. great service and a huge organic and Vegetarian selection as well as all the usual meat dishes. The Rarra Chicken was great. It is a chicken dish which has a mince gravy sauce.<br/>The service was excellent, timely and attentive and the restaurant was immaculately clean.<br/>Mango lassi was to die for.
Suyogya Trivedi
I, myself being Indian, would bet that no other place in New Zealand would serve more authentic food than Chawla's. I used to visit Chawla's very often back in India and this place has the same quality food as it was there. Staff are very friendly (happy faces). Prices are good. I would certainly recommend everyone to try this place out.

Went along with my friends to the restaurant last night, food was really good. Do try Raaraa Chicken its awesome :)

Best Indian food ever had especially the cream chicken.<br/>Good service with smiley faces all around. <br/><br/>Food is really different with authentic flavors and not as creamy as other restaurants. The desert was really awesome mango kulfi is just so delicious.<br/>Staff is very friendly and helpful and have good knowlegde of Indian food. Keep it up

Chawla's since 1985 . When I was a kid I used to visit Chawla's in north India so I know what's the real taste . And now they opened in Auckland and I been with my friends their , the taste of curries still same , it's so yummy that you can't stop eating for a second .<br/>Must try lemon and pepper chicken I liked it very much .<br/>Service : good but can do more better .

Nice food..special schemes for students..loved it...

I really enjoyed my Saturday night here. Service was polite and professional. And the food was delicious, full on flavour and spice. Here's an Indian brand that manages to retain its authenticity on moving to New Zealand. Don't believe me? Look at the mostly Indian customer base...<br/><br/>One caveat - their mains can be quite generous; one might be enough for two people. I ordered two with my friend and we couldn't finish both. We had the chicken tikka masala, chicken saagwala with a garlic naan and a butter roti. Overall, we left feeling quite satisfied.<br/><br/>One of the best Indian restaurants in the CBD!
Richard Kumar
Our order was incorrect, food was not great very salty ran out of beer KF strong after one beer, spoke to the duty manager told him we are not paying for our 2 roti's which came after our meal that we had ordered at the beginning with our mains, a discount of 10% was laid on the table we said 20% and 15% was given. Staff service was ok.
