Review The Butcher's Son - Auckland

Rosie When
I had such lovely experience at The Butcher’s Son. We came for dinner and everything was satisfying: the customer service, the food display, the ambiance, and the taste. It’s a busy vegetarian restaurant with super cool and cozy atmosphere. Despite of the busyness, all of the staff here are very nice and I think this fact really wins a score in my heart. There’s pretty good portion for some dishes regarding the price and they have many delicious, interesting options on the menu. Try this place out if you want to have a healthy meal with your family/friends or just want to treat yourself with some tasty vegetarian food. Nothing can go wrong with The Butcher’s Son 🙌🏻💯

Hey there, today was not my first time at The Butcher's Son, but it was my first time reviewing it. If you are unaware, they are a plant based eatery, so be ready for a "non-meat" experience. We came in as they opened and were greeted and seated immediately. Like most places, especially around the holiday season, they were understaffed, which did impact service on this particular occasion. It would have been good if they acknowledged this when we first arrived to manage our expectations. With that out of the way, let's get into the food. Amazing 🔥🔥🔥 I had the "chicken" burger & fries, and my partner had the pea & courgette fritters... both meals were outstanding! Every time I've been here, the food has consistently been great. Well done 👏 As we were finishing our food, extra staff came in, and the place started whirring into full steam. The man in glasses saved the day! ENJOY

We had appetizers and drinks with a friend here who is strictly vegan, and we had a great meal and a great experience! We thought that the menu had a lot of choices for appetizers, salads and entrees. They had a good drink and wine menu, also. The food was very good, with very good presentation and delicious sauces, etc. The service was very good and friendly, even after the restaurant got fairly busy. We have been to many vegan restaurants all over the world, and this one matches the best of them. We thought that the prices were very fair and comparable to other restaurants in Thailand area. We would definitely recommend this to all of our vegan/vegetarian friends, and our “omnivore” friends, also!

Amazing place! Great vegan / vegetarian menu with perfect blend of continental, mexican, Mediterranean and pinch of Indian items. Awesome variety of drinks, cocktails, coffee, juices. And on top of it, fresh cookies and pastries. Friendly smiling staff, nice decor and location. A must visit place.

OMG - the food here is Amazing! Best vegan place we've been to in Auckland. Do try it. The service was fast and friendly and lots to choose from on the all vegan menu. Had the benedicts brothers and sun fed "chicken" burger - the texture in this burger was amazing! On a good day you can find parking right outside but I imagine it would get busy during peak times. Highly recommend The Butcher's Son.

As vegan friendly as it gets. Appears to be an entirely plant based menu. I tried the nachos and they were amazing. Great, friendly staff. Great atmosphere. A very diverse menu. And the options even pleased my non-vegan friend. Absolutely worth a visit, whether you're a plant based eater or not.

Big fan of this place. Awesome food, best I've had in a long time. Family of veggies so clearly we are the right market for the plant based food, but so tasty. Style of place is also modern and clean, service great, and fairly decent section suitable for having kids around (Green Room) with small basket of really nice toys.

The restaurant wasn't very busy when we were there so there were plenty of tables to choose from. We got one near the entrance but it did look like they had a back area too. Menu is quite large so lots of different options. We tried the tofu kebabs, mushroom pate, and the Buddha bowl. The mushroom pate was amazing. It was served with bread and you could just slather the pate over it. It had a great flavour. The kebabs were ok. I liked the tofu but the other veggies were just a bit salty. The Buddha bowl was alright. The fried cauliflower in it was quite nice. It was also quite filling. We had the waffle for dessert and that was really good. Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The maple syrup was very good as was the nice cream. A really good restaurant option. Even though it is vegan the food is made well enough that you probably won't notice it's missing meat.
Hugh Hucklesby
Good food, not a vegan myself but nachos were very tasty. 20min wait, good prices and large portions of the meals we ordered. The additional vegan chicken I added was also very tasty. Very accommodating to Coeliac which is awesome too.

I had an amazing lunch there the other day and I was amazed by the flavors! I ordered the rancheros which was really filling and very delicious. The spiciness was just perfect. I also had a cold brew coffee with a side of their own house blend which is almond and coconut milk mix. I definitely recommend to non-vegans as well! Thank you guys! You're doing well!

The ‘chicken’ burger was ok - it didn’t come together taste wise. For the cost I personally didn’t think it was worth it. Had better vegetarian burgers at other places.

Butchers Son is my absolute go to! It's great for vegans with omni friends/family as they have a lot of mock meat options. Everything I've had so far has been amazing and awesome staff.
Amazing food. Great service. Inspiring menu and great variety and options. Good for group - tasty shareable plates. They could season their food a little better - we had to add salt to a lot of our dishes.

A great place for a quiet lunch. I had the vegetable burger which has a chickpea patty and it was delicious. Really nice fries - really enjoyable meal.
Neil McGillivray
We went as group of for, some sharing plates have only 3 pcs. And we were not able to increase to 4. Seems odd.

Were keen to try the food but left feeling disapointed.

First time I've been a couple weeks ago and I can't believe I haven't been here sooner! All you vegos and even omnis be prepared to be blown away! I got the beyond beef burger and it was unbelievable! Cooked to perfection and served with a decent side of fries!
The staff here are lovely and it's great you serve alcohol also a lot of vege places don't.
Great setting and atmosphere. I couldn't recommend enough for a good vege meal!
Laura Richardson
Cool place, good for vegetarians. Food that was good: burgers, bao buns, curry, waffles. Food not so good: nachos, apple crumble, non dairy hot beverages.
Really nice place, nice big rooms for parties.

staff are super friendly, service is fast and the food is delicious both from the cabinet and menu. Definitely coming back to try new things, I love the fact that it's entirely vegan so I have freedom to order anything off the menu. The pea and courgette fritters, and the tacos were very good, the mint yogurt on the fritters completed it nicely

Had to give this place a try after seeing many good reviews about it on Instagram. Although I am not vegan I absolutely loved the coconut waffles and smoothie. This meal was very light but surprisingly filling. Will definitely be back ! I have a new outlook on vegan food.

This place never fails to impress! I’ve been here multiple times and it’s always so delicious and the staff are great! Yesterday I had the ‘pork’ bao buns and they were incredibly delicious. Will continue recommending this place to everyone!!

I finally made it here! An entirely vegan menu! For a vegetarian such as myself, this is pretty frickin sweet. The whole menu looked good, but I played it safe and went with the 'pork' baos and the poutine. Oh wow! The buns were amazing, and the gravy on the poutine was out of this world. Not sure how they did it but I was very impressed! Considering how basic the dishes were the flavours were awesome. I'm going to go back again for sure, multiple times!
Definitely go here!! (Maybe book first though!)
Eating My Way Around
Absolutely joyous experience eating here. Such a great selection to choose from, made it hard to choose but it didn't seem to matter because every dish I had was amazing. So delicious and satisfying. My red meat loving friend seemed to enjoy the excursion into plant based food, she probably won't be back but I definitely will! Yum 🌱

Delicious food, well presented, part of a large group who enjoyed a set menu of mainly shared plates. Teenage boys who are protein eaters even enjoyed this....well worth a visit.

Good burger and chips, though a little bit oily.
I really like this place, I will always support a cruelty free kitchen ❤️ good service as well.

I’ve never been to a vegan restaurant before and I’m so glad The Butcher’s Son is my first! The food was beautiful both presentation and taste wise! The staff were so friendly and kept coming back to check if there is anything we want. Excellent service. I had a wonderful time with my friend. I’m actually not a vegan but I love the food so I will definitely come back for more and recommend it to my friends.

Who knew healthy vegan food can be so yum?

May 2019
the mushroom dish (in pics) was a disappointment. Too much bread and mushroom served only as dip, felt like $24 for a plate of bread n dip. Vege Bowl was awesome.

April 2019
This is a hidden treasure. Excellent food. Friendly staff. Wide variety of choices. Great ambiance. A friend introduced me to this place, the name sounds meat but it is probably Aucklands best kept secret!

Don't let the name fool you. This is THE best vegan restaurant I have ever been too. The food is amazing. Clean, nutritious, filling and clearly alot of care gone into each dish.
I was the only vegan out of my party, but every single diner loved what they had and even the hardcore meat eaters and fussier children were really satisfied and loved their dishes. I had the 'chicken'burger and Gluten free bap with kumera fries. It was amazing, I had to check a few times that it really was vegan, and the aioli was definitely dairy free because it was so good.

The others had nachos, pea and courgette fritters, waffles, 'mozzarella sticks' and beet burgers. Every meal was delicious. And to know the meals were all vegan and so no cross contamination of meat or dairy was lovely.

The whole energy of this place is beautiful.

The restaurant itself is warm and inviting, and even subtle things, like the lighting was perfect. (The lights were dimmed slightly rather than bright hideous florescent tubing!) The music was good and soft and the staff were so attentive, friendly and knowledgeable.

The waitress took on board any concerns we had about allergies etc and really knew about the menu and the different types of allergies etc that people suffered from and therefore what was a good choice for them.

My only negative would be the amount of meals containing chilli. (I am very allergic to anything from the nightshade family and my son doesn't like it at all) So that only left a few meals to choose from as nearly every meal contains some form of the nightshade family and chili. However, the manager did come over and chatted with me about this, and took on board that not everyone wants chili in their meals, and actually said that they were going to amend the menu and remove this from some of the meals as they hadn't realized the amount of people with nightshade allergies and had had the same feedback a few times this week. So a concern that was soon rectified and taken on board. :)

I very much look forward to returning soon, and if the chili hasn't been removed from more dishes, I will happily eat what I had today again, and if not try another meal like the rest of my table had, because it was all really, really good. :)

The bao buns were soooo delicious! I would rate it 10/10. As for the burger, doesn’t taste as good as a chicken burger with all the fat and oil and the caesar salad was good too.
Good place to eat if you like healthy foods especially for the health freaks or those who are gluten and dairy free.
Lucy
Lovely ambience, great spot for vegan/vegetarian food.
The Buddha bowl I ordered contained a mixture of fried cauliflower, chickpeas, sweet onions and baby lettuce. Healthy and delicious.
Look forward to trying their brunch menu one day.
Hannah.milne11
Super delicious and surprisingly filling having 2 baos with the kumura chips! Good value for money and wicked vibe! Will definitely be back to try others options
Gloriya
A bit disappointed. We went here for brunch as their weekend brunch menu on Zomato looks great, but we were told their brunch menu is no longer available... 3 stars for this place because foods are okay and staffs are friendly.

First time in a vegan restaurant and I am pleasantly surprised. All the dish were full of flavours and I left feeling satisfied. Fave dish was the pea and courgette fritters.

Pleasantly surprised. The gluten free toast was delicious!! Smashed avo and beetroot hummus were great. The waiter mixed up my friends order but the kitchen whipped up the correct dish pretty quickly, a good comeback. Nice to see they sell stainless steel straws, less plastic 👍🌿

The butchers son is the best vegan place in Auckland, there menu is extensive and they change items monthly/seasonally. The burgers are tasty and packed full of flavour

lovely atmosphere, super friendly staff, and great food. i thought the portion size of the waffles was a little small considering the price, but the restaurant is situated in an expensive area so makes sense. it’s a nice place to come for a treat!

Absolutely love this place, definitely my fav cafe to eat at. I’ve been coming here for a while, witnessed several menu changes and tried many of their dishes. They have all been great, can’t fault anything with them. It’s honestly so nice to be able to walk into a cafe and know that I can order literally anything I want because it’s all vegan.

If you aren’t vegan or even vegetarian, maybe you’re skeptical of whether the food is good or not, I can still highly recommend it. My father, who eats meat, loves this place as much as I and other family members who don’t eat meat do. The food is just supremely delicious. Will leave you wanting more!

Since becoming vegan there are heaps of restaurants that I have yet to explore but this place is a must! This is my second time here and the food doesn’t disappoint! So delicious and well made. On my first time I came with my non vegan non vegetarian friends and they loved the food too. I mate ordered the sunfed chicken burger and when I told her it’s vegan she so surprised she thought it was regular chicken! The second time around I ordered the “pork” bao buns and ohhhh soo delicious! Highly recommend this place if you are a vegan or wanting to eat healthier:)

I really enjoyed this place. I had the Buddha bowl for main and shared the aubergine for starter. It was all really delicious with fresh ingredients. I was absolutely starving before I came & stuffed by the time I left. The service is friendly, the food took a while to come but that was okay. The drinks menu is small, but it covers all the bases. The whole place is clean, spacious, light and airy. Lovely bathroom. I am so pleased to have such a fantastic vegan option for dinner. I will be back again and again.

Do you know how refreshing it is to be able to order a pastry from the cabinet knowing it is dairy and egg free?! I had such a great experience here. The interior is charming (the signs on the bathroom doors made me giggle), the staff are super interactive and friendly and the food is creatively put together and made so well. We ordered a cinnamon brioche, protein bowl, big breakfast and some sunfed chicken on the side. I also ordered a chocolate chip cookie to go which was delectable. I cannot wait till the next time I dine here!

The Butchers Son, 204 Jervois Rd, situated in the lush posh Suburb of Herne Bay... where expensive cars adorn the streets & the rich & famous brunch.
The venue is young, established less than a year ago, and redefining the hospitality industry with Emphasis on there slogan; “Animals love us, plants fear us!”
They are strong advocates of the environment using animal free products, biodegradable packaging and local artisans and growers.

The interior is a breath of fresh air with its earthy tones, the clever boxed greenery separating areas for seating, Pine wood Tables & provincial design chairs are comfy, I suspect the napkins & menus are eco friendly too. Also available is a Private area for meetings or small function. This is clean dining at its best!

So... the LIKELIHOOD of a BIG THICK juicy steak at this joint?
Ummm as Terry would put it, “Nah uh!”
Be prepared... actually be amazed... for this venue offers an extensive menu boasting delicious interesting vegan meals a great selection of coffees, teas, juices, smoothies using only almond milk & soya... if you need that extra pick me up with your meal they have a selection of wines beers & cocktails.
Lastly, for those on the run, a scrumptious glass cabinet filled with home-made savouries & desserts.

The Menu is easy to browse over and each item is detailed perfectly it is kid friendly and offers some tasty twists for them.

The Food;
We ordered our main meal items and praying we made the right choice
While we waited we Discussed amongst us the not so popular Tofu & how will it replace the egg meat dairy content... within 30mins all our meals were served for all 9 of us.
WOW... Presentation on point! portion size generous... everything on the plate looked amazing!

BENEDICT’S BROTHER – sweet potato bun, spinach, portobello mushroom, tofu ‘egg’, butternut hollandaise & coconut ‘bacon’

BOSS BREAKFAST – miso mushrooms, sausage, roast vine tomatoes, corn fritters, seasonal greens, hummus, avocado, scrambled tofu with toast

TACO LOCO – BBQ pulled jackfruit, chipotle aioli & charred pineapple chilli salsa

THE MED –grilled flat bread, beetroot hummus, picked carrot, chargrilled broccolini, olives, ‘feta’ & toasted almonds falafel

BEET BURGER –beetroot, mushroom / tempeh patty, pickles, ‘cheddar’, aioli, tomato jam on a toasted bun with fries & side sauce Kumara fries and aioli sauce
Everyone agreed that all of the above meals were delicious... if we had anything negative, it definitely would be directed to the Tofu... not a great substitute for egg or meat! It’s a no no for us meat lovers but for the vegan a yes yes LOL👌
The Beet Burger & kumara chips aioli sauce were the winners - Burger fresh tasty amazing & the kumara fries fantastic crunchy crispy deliciousness complemented well with the Devine aioli sauce.
Lattes and smoothies were all well received and none of us complained about the almond milk.

The Staff/Service;
Really good cannot fault... they know there product well.

Overall experience;
Great morning detox session with the foodies a few suffering from a hangover LOL
Venue is good for a family outing who are feeling for something a lil different to chow down on... even for the speculators.
Affordable dining that won’t break the bank.
Opening hours Sun-Weds 0800-1600
Thu-Sat 0800-til Late
Parking is a lottery in this area, side streets 60mins.

4.5/5

My daughter wanted to come and try this Vegan Eatery and even my Non Vegan Hubby was impressed with his çhickenless chicken Tika Masala.
Service was good, we got there 10 minutes before the kitchen closed and they let us know this when we came in so we didn't miss eating, I think if there wasn't such a short time-frame for ordering I would have had a hard time choosing what to eat, but because we had to make a snap decision I went for the first thing that jumped out at me.
My daughter and I had the beetroot burgers and boy were they delish, I woofed mine down, there was a healthy portion of flat cut chips and a really generous bowl of aioli - I had my grandkids steeling the chips but due to the large size portions I wouldn't have finished them all anyway. The fresh green smoothie was divine too! we will be back I am sure. The restaurant is nice and welcoming, plenty of big tables (there were 7 of us in all) they have toys and highchairs which meant a nice relaxing time for all. Parking - there were some 60 minute slots around the corner which we parked in and we were in, fed and out in that time.

I’m not a vegan myself but I’ve been to this place a few times as the service was always friendly and prompt. I liked their beet burger and my husband rated their best ever beans very highly. Their coffee with house blend milk is also very nice. I think this is a great place for true vegans.

We went on a Sunday when they were clearly understaffed (a few people had called in sick) so the service was slow but friendly and we were mostly kept updated on the progress.
I had the tacos with sunfed chicken, the addition of the chicken is perhaps not best choice if you get this dish. It becomes a bit dry and overly corny. By itself I think it would be quite delicious.
At the table there was also the pancakes of which the verdict was also dry. One of the berry bowls which looked delicious. And finally The Med which was let down by the flatbread (“cardboard” was the descriptive used). I noticed a lot of the menu aims to be GF and I wonder if that is the cause of some of our issues. The coffee was not great but the house made milk is well done.
Overall, I think it’s a wonderful concept and really accessible for non-vegans. There are plenty of tables (which probably accounts for the food being a little slower than normal too). I would happily go again.

Had dinner here tonight. I couldn’t fault it. I’m not vegan, but my friend is and she loved being able to order anything off the menu. I had the arancini (rice balls) and nachos. Food was great. Only thing I would say is their website isn’t very clear, we had to ring up to find out the hours for a Saturday -we didn’t know they did dinner and the kitchen is closed between 3 and 5:30. Still plenty of other yummy stuff like cakes and slices from the case you can have in that time and drinks.

Vegan eateries – are they a new trend or trying to make a difference to our ever-changing environment?. This past weekend we dined at newcomer The Butcher’s Son. I admit I’m always a tad sceptical when dining at a vegan eatery but am always open to being wowed. Was I wowed this weekend? Not really no sadly. I expected more after the high scoring reviews online maybe its because I didn’t order the “Chicken Burger”. But don’t you hate that – who wants to go to a place and have ordered the wrong item.
Vegan Eats AKL
This fully-vegan restaurant certainly did not disappoint. The food is really delicious and the service is pretty good too. Prices are average but overall it is a fantastic experience and I will definitely be back!

If your vegan, vegetarian or wanting to eat clean then this place is worth checking out. If you’re not (like me) you may feel a little out of your comfort zone and a bit cautious when looking at their menu. In saying that though, I was surprised to see so many meat free options and alternatives to your standard brunch classics. We visited on a Sunday for brunch and already proving to be popular all their tables were nearly full. Keeping us in the loop we were told there would be a 30-minute wait for food.

Our waitress told us that the bene was one of their most popular dishes so I thought It’d be safe and give it a go. Again if your vegan! It’s a great alternative but if your used to your poached egg then you’ll feel like something is missing. Replaced with scrambled tofu, it looked like your normal eggs bene! (they even have beetroot coconut chips acting as bacon shavings to garnish). The taste wasn’t quite there for me but I did love the kumara sour dough bagel. My partner ordered the ‘Chicken’ burger and it was pretty good. He is vegetarian so it was a great option for him. The chips were crisp and it was a well portioned meal.
For those who prefer there coffee with almond milk or soy - you’ll love the coffee here.

Despite the wait, the service was good and staff were friendly and helpful with the menu. Would be keen to try out more dishes here – the smoothie bowls looked pretty good and will be perfect for the warmer months!

Saturday morning about 8.45am. Spoilt for choice on food. Never happens to me. I am married to ‘the butchers son’ who is now vegetarian so this place had a name to make us chuckle. With Lots of choice I went for the tofu scramble and hubby the eggs benny. He was extremely happy with his choice. They even designed some kind of egg thing to sit on the top so it looked like poached eggs. My tofu was spicy and pretty with an avocado mix on top which in June isn’t so easy to pull off. I was expecting a water logged soppy mess but it was considerably better than I had expected. My mother had been for lunch the day before and wasn’t so thrilled with her choice of taco thing and my aunt had the beetroot burger which she loved. I say go give it a go. I’m giving it another one. The staff were friendly and tolerant of our question even though they were getting busy.

When we asked our favourite vegetarian to pick this week’s lunch spot, we thought she was trolling us with the name. What we expected to be a meat-fest turned out to be an elegant
plant-based eatery with a tasty as, wholesome menu. Think pulled ‘pork’ jackfruit tacos and tofu ‘eggs’ benedict. We love the audacious slogans like ‘Animals love us. Plants fear us’, with their staff rocking epic tees that have ‘hardcore herbivores’ slashed across the back. Not gonna lie, our designers are developing a bit of a crush here. Their sunfed ‘chicken’ burger made even the most dedicated carnivores do a double-take. And their kumara fries, oh their kumara fries.
What have you done to us, son?
Check out our individual food reviews here: husk.co.nz/lunches/the-butchers-son-june-2018

This is a popular vegan place in Ponsonby. I and my friend both had the chicken burger which I strongly recommend to everyone. Their chips (both potato & kumara) are something that worths dying for. Also, don't forget to check the green area at the back as you may find it more comfortable to sit than the area at the front. I definitely will come back again and give other food on their menu a try :)

I've been here a few times now and it's always a great experience! The staff are competent, friendly, and onto it. The food is amazing!!! The prices are very fair. Definitely one of my favourites!

Absolutely loved The Butchers Son! As I vegetarian it’s hard to find good quality food that is also great for your body, the menu here is truly unique and uses mixed of foods and alternatives I would have thought of, I had the ‘eggs benedict’ while my mother had one of the Buddha bowls, personally I didn’t like the squash hollandaise sauce however my mother loved it so we ended up swapping meals and the Buddha bowl was spectacular!!
Prices are very reasonable to! 😊

Never go to this place for brunch if they are busy. They told us that the wait would be 15-30 minutes for the food. It took an hour for it and nobody even bothered checking the food or was attentive towards our empty table. People who came 15 minutes later got the food faster than ours. The waiters are not attentive whatsoever and they lied about the wait time. Never coming back again.
Dinnerin
One word, AMAZING! The tofu with the sauce, perfectly balance. Had a good time with myself. Staffs are friendly. Only one thing, the menu need to be change, lots of water mark on it...
Stacey Williams
Ordered the Chicken Burger and Beet Burger. The food was pretty good but we ended up waiting nearly an hour for our food, due to our order being backdated. We were given no apology and not informed beforehand about the long waiting times. As well as this, when we were seated, we weren’t given water straight away like the other customers. And there was also a surcharge, due to the public holiday making our meal cost nearly $60 for two burgers. Although, I do believe that we would have enjoyed our meal a lot more, if it wasn’t for the long wait and poor service.
Berna
I wasn’t initially keen on going here because it’s a plant based eatery, but I’m really glad I did because the food and drinks are delish. The chicken burger is the only meal that has meat in it but of course you can always add on chicken to your meal. Perfect place for brunch, also there’s plenty of free off st parking. I would definitely come back here to try other stuff in the menu.
Holly Potton
Love the decor and vegan concept, food was very nice. However, waited over 45 minutes for food with no prior warning of a delay, apology or attempt to recover. No point having a large space if you can’t source it properly. Perhaps teething problems but wouldn’t recommend going if you have anything else to do that day
Zoe
Great staff, comfortable atmosphere, AMAZING food and drinks. I can't think of one bad thing about the experience I had here. Everything we tried was outstanding and exceeded the already fantastic reviews we've heard about this place. Will be returning very soon.
August Hislop
Food was very average and quite underwhelming, I ordered the nachos and boyfriend ordered the med. the med was okay but the nachos were missing some love, needed maybe some sweet corn or salsa and some salad. I also ordered a coconut milk hot chocolate which was so flat I could barely lift the cup, the marshmallow on the side was delicious though!
ConnSinn Kam
The food, the drink, the staff aka hardcore herbivore =), the atmosphere are spectacular. Definitely the best vegan food I had so far. Look forward for future visit =)

so finally went here..its super busy all the time which is a good thing as today people are happy to try plant based :)

but I have to be honest I'm not in love with it...i had the big breaky and it was ok. It seems wierd to say this but it didnt give me vegan vibes..it feels better suited for non vegans who want to try something new. As for me vegan food is so tasty it doesn't need to be complicated :)

I think I would just opt for a smoothie bowl next time .....
Natasha Watson
Finally a fully vegan cafe that isn’t raw!! Amazing ideas and great to see an environmentally conscious cafe and totally free of animals. I will definitely be back to try the tacos and the hot cakes.

I’d been excitedly following you guys on social media since I saw the first announcement that there was this new vegan place planned to open in Herne Bay. The posts of the awesome interior, your gorgeous branding, then some delicious food, it was such a great way to build excitement - it worked! I was so bloody excited when you opened, but alas, living in Clevedon and having kids meant it couldn’t rush straight there and drop everything else. The first time I planned to go was after the Banksy Exhibition with my son, alas we’d spent too long admiring artwork and you closed in half an hour. I finally made it last week and you didn’t disappoint! Your staff are wonderful! The place, inside and out, was perfect! Your branding is absolutely gorgeous and the entire experience is a symphony for the senses!

I got the Beet Burger with potato fries and my friend had the chicken burger with kumara fries. My burger was so damned good - that pattie is to die for! But nobody had to which is the best thing about it. The flavour and texture of that pattie is way better than I was expecting, and I was expecting big things after all the hype. Well, people, do, do, do believe the hype!!! The chilli/chipotle mayo? on the side was absolutely delicious. The only thing that stood out to me, and I’m a very particular weirdo with burger building and where the things go - hehe Is I found it a little odd that the mayo was under the pattie and the other sauce on the top bun by the salads. My husband and kids think I’m a freak with how important the order of items in a burger/sandwich is to me. All that aside, I realise that my view on where items should go based on their tastes with the next item is pretty full-on so understood that this was all me! Haha

My friend loved her burger as well, said it was incredible. We loved the entire experience.

Everything was absolutely amazing and hell yes I will be back.

Super friendly staff, good music, lovely decor, exciting menu and the food was insane!! I can’t wait to go back. I had the nachos with Sunfed chicken. Perfect!

Finally a licensed restaurant that’s 100% plant based and vegan. The staff were extremely helpful, patient, kind and attentive. The food was amazing and delicious. The prices are reasonable for what you get considering everything is vegan. Some of the portions are huge (especially the boss breakfast). We also had the sunfed chicken Nachos, banana pancakes and “chicken” burger- which were all delicious. The restaurant is spacious and clean and in a great location. So happy to see veganism growing and thriving (the restaurant was packed). See you next time.

Edit: we came back for the rancheros, beetroot burger, The Med and the Kumara fries. The burger was huge and delicious. Kumara fries and aioli were also great. The rancheros were slightly smaller portion than the rest but still good.

No one could believe it when we were told a plant based eatery (obviously doesn't have the same hipsterite connotations as being vegan) was opening in the hood... After a solid wait for the old Italian (and before that an Indian place) restaurant to get replaced, we were entranced to see how many amateur diners flocked here to immerse themselves in plant eating..! Of course I had to try something, and actually found the entire menu captivating, so ordered the buttery beans. Flavors were amazing and I didn't even mind my pet hate (celery) being included... This place is cutting edge especially since meat free living is so in vogue now (for good reason as well). Will definitely be back to try some other options!

Waited for 45 minutes for our order to arrive only to be told they had not placed it. Not acceptable sorry especially the attitude of the staff when we decided to bring this to their attention.

Had the BEST vegan curry EVER!! Hot chocolate was also delicious! We had a girl new to NZ serve us, she was lovely, when we asked questions she didn’t know answers too (understandable as cafe hadn’t been open for very long yet) she got a more knowledgeable staff member who answered our questions in detail! Was impressed with not only the service but the fantastic vibes of staff/quality of food. Highly recommend!

Tried out my first Vegan eatery place, and it did not disappoint!
I ordered pancakes for myself and a berry smoothie. Both were full of flavour. The pancakes were DELICIOUS and had a nice crunch to them which was different. The coconut ice cream that came with it tasted amazing. Only downside was the portion, as 3 mini pancakes came for $18. However, understandable for the location and quality. I also took a bite of the sunfed 'chicken' burger and for fake meat it tasted great!

I was impressed with the set up and how spacious it was as soon as i walked in. Staff were super friendly and lovely.

Can't wait to go back and try out other things from their extensive menu.

As a meat lover decided to try out a vegan option today for lunch.

Despite how busy they where since it was lunch hour we were greated and seated instantly. Service was great and very friendly stuff 10/10.

After looking at the menu decided to go with the sunfed chicken burger and iced latte. Wasn't to happy on the proportion pretty much paid for a empty glass overall the latte was well made.

Sunfed burger was well presented proportion not bad came along with fries and salad. Didn't really taste like chicken, was lacking flavour could do with some sauce etc

Overall great experience great atmosphere will deffs come back try more things out
Family and friends are raving about this place.
Cant wait to try it out. Super sweet that all their take away packaging is biodegradable, completely plastic free. Thanks for being a responsible eatery!

Had a lovely experience here, the wait staff were extremely attentive and prompt!
My partner and I had the curry, the burger and the tacos- we wanted to try a selection of the menu because everything looked darn good!
My friend had the pancakes and those looked delicious too.
The decor is very nice with some of the quotes on the wall making me chuckle!
I could not believe the food was vegan!! We will definitely be back!
Ps the ginger slices in the cabinet are a must try !

Great cafe, makes it easy to eat healthy and eco friendly. Good atmosphere too. I had the beans on gluten free and it was amazing, also that gluten free bread is the best I have had yet!!

Lovely new and clean environment suits perfectly with the menu of health conscious yet flavor packed meals. The future of the restaurant and food industry comes together here with the opportunity to indulge in meals made with ingredients sourced ethically and humanely.

Already planning to go back as there are a number of other dishes I want to try. Had the sunfed chicken burger with handmade fries and a divine salad with some delish wee nuts and a drizzle
of fragrant dressing. Could only eat 2/3 of the meal so the portion size was too much for me. I thought the decor was very streamlined and I'm a big fan of 'no clutter' so I found it restful and the
furniture is nice enough to steal. The staff were adorable. The commitment to environmentally friendly extends right down to the metal straws for the fresh juice.

Went with a group of 5 and we all loved the food, drinks and decor. The boss was my choice for brunch and it was a good one. Substantial and well presented it was delicious. Highly recommended. Coffee was excellent - I love strong coffee and it was! My companions had fresh juices which they said were v good, tacos and bean meals were both a hit and highly recommended too. I took away a brioche made in house - yummy! I'll be back.

The Butcher's Son is Auckland's latest plant-based eatery with an accomodating layout and a promising ethos. We visited on a busy Saturday for lunch, and were hugely impressed with both the attentiveness and attitude of all staff members. Despite how busy it was, they found us a seat immediately which was impressive when compared to similar eateries.

I feel that there could be some improvement to both the portions and the overall flavour of the foods - I am no connoisseur or food critic, but cold nachos that are only half the advertised size are not entirely satisfying. What was mouthwateringly tasty, though, was their INCREDIBLE cinnamon brioche, a delightful mix of spicy sweetness and soft, 'buttery' dough. Get two, three, five if you can!

The standard was totally reasonable for a brand new establishment and I look forward to trying the pancakes and perhaps a drink next time (and of course, picking up another one or two of those deliciously divine cinnamon brioches!). A lovely spot for a meeting, catch-up or just to enjoy the ambience and lovely service. I look forward to inevitably increasing my rating!

Food: 2.5/5
Service: 5/5
Ambience: 4/5

We had a rancheros and the boss breakfast. The rancheros are slightly spicy, very tasty, medium size breakfast. The boss breakfast left me completely satisfied. I’ll definitely come back to The Butcher’s Son !

We visited on the first weekend since The Butcher's Son opened. The interior is well decorated with tall ceilings - something resembling Street Organics - with wooden furniture and booths amidst the numerous green plants. As there were two of us, we were immediately seated and the first thing we noticed was that the service was highly attentive (which is great to see considering we've been to so many places with good food but the service was lacklustre and was detrimental to the experience. Food was good - ordering the Nachos and Chicken Burger it was definitely our type of food. However, we paid five dollars to add Sunfed Chicken but when the Nachos arrived there was barely more than four tiny sized chunks (yes, keeping in mind that the product is usually $14 at Countdown for 300 grams) I felt they could have been a bit more generous considering it was an addition. Also, the portion was no where near advertised (e.g. on Instagram) perhaps about half -unless the persons' hands and cutlery they were using were miniature sized - of what was shown in the post (https ://www.instagr am.co m/p/BemEjx IA5c1/? taken-by=thebutcherssonnz). The burger itself I believe was fine, however I think the chilli jam was not evenly spread and resulted in the first few bites not tasting it at all and the last few bites being furiously acidic + spicy. Finally, we also took away a cinnamon brioche from the cabinet which was delightful - soft and fluffy with delicious sugary innards. Keep in mind that this was at its peak busy hour on the opening weekend, so expect differences in what I have described here (something I didn't mention was the 40 minute wait for food but considering the time at which we went I'm letting it sliiiiiide). Cheers for a good lunch. 3.5 stars.

The Butchers Son has a fully vegan menu, but even though I’m not vegan this new cafe was just as good as any other with all the usual favourites, just tweaked.
Service was great, very friendly staff who were knowledgeable & made good menu suggestions. It is a pretty decent size for a cafe, but it pays to get there early as sometimes you may need to wait for a table.
As with many Vegan/healthy cafes, portions aren’t large, and the menu can be slightly pricy, but then we are talking premium products with some harder to source or needing to be house made so this is kind of understandable.
We ordered the Avo on toast with sauerkraut which was beautifully flavoured. Also a side of falafel which was yum. The pancakes were well made & the coconut yoghurt a hit.
The turmeric latte was quite mild & could have done with more flavour (having had this elsewhere quite a bit). The coffee was well made - they have a variety of nut milks to choose from.
Keen to return & try some more of the menu, particularly the ‘chicken’ burger.

Such a cool idea, especially with the limited options available for plant based and vegan eaters. It’s a nice atmosphere and the staff are lovely but the food is definitely lacking in flavour and a certain je ne se quoi for the price you’re paying. Will definitely come back to try the lunch items but for now there are other places I’d pick over it. Would also not recommend the cold brew if you’re a coffee fan 🌿💖
