Review Big Fish Eatery - Auckland

Sensational. We came here for a work lunch and it was perfect. Delicious food, some nice tea choices (great when you can't have a beer!). I loved the salmon salad - it was healthy and really hit the spot. We were 13 people and the kitchen had our meals out within 10 minutes - really impressed at how quick this was. Comfortable seats, helpful staff. Definitely would recommend it for groups.

Lovely resturant. The staff there were very polite and kind, also humour too. The food was quick and very tasty, especially the fried rice, that was yummy. All in a nice environment, which I think it pretty nice for a cloudy day. Lovely!

Reviews are true, food super delicious, service very awesome, price is reasonable, tidy and clean toilet. Highly recommended for a group, couple or family. 💗🐟👣 Back to this lovely and amazing place to indulge with food. Big portion and reasonably priced. Great customer service and delicious food.

Such a fantastic experience, we were given a voucher for the 7 course dinner experience. It was simply incredible, the food was delicious, fresh and served by a friendly and fun team. The food portions are very generous, I highly recommend the Crispy Pork Belly and Prawn Papaya Salad. Thank you for the experience, and for fitting us in with little notice! Absolutely 10/10

Valentines night came out perfect with roses on each table. The food is amazingly delicious. Just look at their reviews. Lots of parking and pet / dog friendly. The staff are very friendly too. Good size serves too. You gota try it.

Came in on the off chance the food would be good as I was simply hungry looking for a feed. The food was bloody amazing. I swear I had a mouthgasim. Seriously good food and excellent bang for buck.

We had heard great things about the Aunty G’s pop-up and what an experience. My pork belly with bok choy on rice was unbelievable (in terms of flavour and value at just $15), the soy chicken was a bit hit on our table as well. Very friendly staff and the food was very really quickly which is important at lunchtime. Highly recommend to all. James Ashwin Kakapo Business Sales

Awesome food and great atmosphere, will highly recommend to anyone. Food came out in great timing, as we had a group of 10. Great taste, great service

A great little local restaurant. We had a coeliac with us but there were many GF options. Delicious Californian sushi roll, pad Thai, beef bulgogi and green papaya salad. Plenty of food for four and efficient service.

I am missing the foods at Big Fish Stonefields and am happy eating them now. The standard of the food and the portions are still the same as before. It’s a thrill and treat to comfort myself with such enjoyment. Thank you!

Stopped by for brunch. It looks like they changed their menu, no longer having a breakfast one. It was sad they didn't have the pork belly bene any more since that was really good. We grabbed a few things to share. The papaya salad was quite nice with bits of crispy pork belly mixed into the salty and sour dressing. the tako karaage was quite interesting with the avocado and the prawn cracker underneath which was almost like a tortilla chip. I really liked the tuna tartare. It was salty and fresh and quite refreshing, almost like a salad. The sesame oil flavour was quite nice with the tuna and avocado. I wasn't a fan of the bulgogi. I just found it tasted of dark soy and wasn't very sweet. We also got a couple of tarts for takeaway since we were stuffed and they were really nice. The staff were friendly and a lot better than my last experience. A really nice cafe to get some nice Asian fusion food.

We have been here a few times and my only challenge is what to eat - so many great options and the size of the portions is excellent. Nice to have a good local which is easy, cosy and super yum. Well done and see you soon as I eat my way through the menu :)

First time here after being a regular at their other location in Penrose. This is a smaller but has a more intimate setting, the food is absolutely delicious and the service allowed us to pre-order the day before to accommodate our bigger group of 12+ A great selection of drinks to pair with the food and desert to top off the night.

Good price and very delicious food. The plates and atmosphere were so gorgeous. My little bit of feedback is the timing as one of our food was received much later than we had hoped for. She ordered separately from the group package because of her food preference but she ordered minutes before everyone had arrived to try and time it to align ours. Fortunately she was happy with the food and so were we! It was a wonderful staff team dinner and the amount was overwhelmingly superb. We ate our left overs the next day at work! The dessert was simply to die for!

We had been meaning to visit for some time as Big Fish had been recommended to us. We were pleased we did as the food and service were both excellent. We will return.

Fabulous food and fantastic value! We had a lovely evening and the atmosphere was great. We started with the gyozas, followed by the vege green curry and pad Thai - all very tasty and beautifully presented.

I think the Penrose branch is better. I have been to the Stonefields branch twice. The first time, I found their pork ribs dish too salty. Second time I ordered a Prawn Pad Thai and it was a bit too sour I struggled to finish the dish. I love the chicken karaage at both branches.

My friend and me wanted to try this place out since we like the Penrose branch so much. But the atmosphere is so different from the other branch, we felt unwanted and unwelcomed when we walked in the restaurant on a Thursday night, we were ignored by the staff.

Love this restaurant! Always fresh, vibrant, yummy Asian fusion food. Fast & friendly service too. Great local

I’ve been to Big Fish a number of times now and have yet to be disappointed. I ordered twice during lockdown and got free delivery which was such a luxury. Have tried the Char Kuantan’s Teow, vegan green curry, comfort wings, soft shell crab and spicy tuna roll. Every dish was flawless. Healthy, full of flavour, spicy, right on the money. 10/10

4 of us went there for dinner. Really tasty asian fusion. Would give 5 stars but unfortunately the amount of meat comparing to the rest of ingredients is not ok. Just had a few small pieces of chicken. So the rest of us.

I don't like Asian fusion food, but big fish is one of the exception. We have been there few times for lunch and dinner. Food is always tasty. Highly recommend their papaya salad.

This eatery has been around the neighbourhood for a while and we finally came for a meal! It was pretty good ! Everything taste very refreshing. The fried soft shell crab was perfect cook and juicy , the sauce domes with it is perfect, the salad was very tasty and filling , tuna tartare was on the salty side, maybe a touch of too much soy sauce. This place is usually busy most nights as it pack of residents from Stonefields.

such a nice surprise to have a speedy local delivery of fresh, tasty and beautiful food. Lady who delivered was so friendly. We cant wait to try other menu items.

Ordered their special of day “ Tomyum soup” hair in my soup. They said string. 😒I just wasn’t lucky day... other foods were good!

I went to big fish for my birthday and loved the food there. Me and a few other friends shared some plates and we all agreed that everything was delicious. I loved the tempura prawn and dragon roll but honestly you couldn’t go wrong at a place like that.

The only issue I have was the low amount of staff. It just seemed like it took forever for the one poor lady to get around the very busy restaurant.

Other than that everything was great 4/5 from me. Definitely a good one. Don’t forget to book ahead though it’s very busy.

We've been to the Penrose branch a few times and always enjoyed it. This was our first time at Stonefields, first impression was that it's small and cramped. The food coming out looked amazing though so was very excited to eat. Problems started when the food all came out at different times. My friend's food came out first, the next one 10 minutes later and mine eventually half an hour later! The vegetable tempura was very salty but I thought nothing of it. When my Char Kuey Teow came out, its the worst Char Kuey Teow I've ever had, they really shouldn't call it that and the worst part is it was SO salty. I can normally take salty food but this was way too salty, I felt so sick afterwards. I couldn't even finish the food. Overall a disappointing experience. The upside is my husband's Calkfornia Roll was good, so was my daughters miso salmon on rice and portions are big.
Liv
Fantastic family friendly restaurant, we keep coming back for more. Great value for money given the high standard of food. The vegetable and prawn tempura are must gets, the tempura batter is crunchy and delicious. The fried rice is a large serving and delicious, it’s great for sharing and a perfect accompaniment for the rest of the dishes. We found the dragon roll a little bland and the salmon sashimi could have been cut a bit thinner but overall have had a great meal on each occasion we have visited.

Consistently good food and service.

I've been to Big Fish a few times in recent months - twice with friends, once with partner, and once with kids. Each time the experience was fantastic and couldn't be faulted.

Although not in the most exciting location, the restaurant itself is cosy and always very busy so there's a nice atmosphere. We've always booked a table and only once had to wait a few minutes to be seated, but they have a little area with bar stools where you can wait.

The staff here are always great. Friendly and welcoming, attentive but not annoying, great with kids.

The food is the highlight. We usually get a mix of dishes to share - some of the standouts have been the blue cod gyoza, sticky ribs, spiced salmon, and the prawn, papaya and pork belly salad. The kids' menu is limited but one of our kids had the katsu chicken which she loved and the other was happy to eat the same dishes as the adults.

Overall highly recommend this restaurant - a great addition to the relatively sparse dining scene in the eastern suburbs.

Super delicious food at really reasonable prices. The pork, prawn and papaya salad is exceptional, they don’t scrimp on the shrimp (prawns)! Highly recommended

Great service, quick delivery of food. Some was missing seasoning but an all round enjoyable experience. Potions were generous and welcoming!

Really love the big fish at penrose, this branch not bad too. All the ingredients are pretty fresh, food quality is 5/5 , quantity 4/5, service 5/5, environment 4/5

Very friendly and attentive waiting staff and good food, only thing missing was the Bao they have in the Penrose restaurant, other than that I would definitely recommend and go again. Their chicken and spare rib is amazing.

Lovely surroundings and very pleasant helpful staff made this evening great. Food tasty and a little different. We had the blue cod gyoza (dumplings), eye fillet and the sticky pork ribs. All were excellent choices for us. They have gf menu as well. Will return soon with my friends. BYO an advantage. Would give 4.5 if I could.

My cousin & I came here for dinner on a Wednesday night. I recommend making a reservation, as it was full when we arrived around 7.30 and we sat on the bar stools until a table became available. We both really enjoyed the food. Each dish was packed with flavour and there were some interesting combinations (like blueberries & corn) which actually worked really well. I would have given 5 stars if the service hadn't been so terrible. Once the food arrived, nobody came back to our table to check if everything was ok, and nobody came to see if we wanted to order something else. After failing to flag down the waitress, I actually had to go up to the front to get her attention, to order another dish. They never refilled our water either, or asked if we wanted more wine. Once again I had to get up to tell her we needed water. This kind of service would never fly in a city like NYC (where I live), and where the waiters work for tips. Once I went to pay, the young man had no clue how to find our bill, and had to wait for the owner or manager to help him. More waiting around. Our bellies left full and satisfied, but the crappy service left a bad taste in our mouths. I wonder if the Penrose location is better? Please Big Fish Stonefields, educate your staff on how to wait on a table properly! Your food is amazing though.

This is the most amazing Asian restaurant. Plenty of food at a very reasonable price and absolutely delicious. Service was just right. Can't fault Big Fish - recommend booking.

A restaurant named ‘Big Fish‘ would probably make one think that it could be ‘fish and chips’ related or fish is its signature dish. However, …………. At Big Fish Eatery we take pride in serving a modern take on traditional Pan Asian cuisine. We are inspired by bold Asian flavours, beautiful produce and freshest New Zealand ingredients to create delicious dishes.

Finding the new location of the very popular Big Fish (also in Penrose), I was curious to try their brunch menu. Specialising in Asian fusion, and their legendary cookie dough dessert, they were very quiet on my visit compared to the other cafes at Stonefields. It could be to do with the name (Big Fish doesn’t make you think of brunch) but I hope this is temporary as they deserve to do well.
Service was very friendly & efficient. They have good indoor & outdoor seating. I’m not sure what brand of coffee they serve but it was well made. They have a good range of drinks available & the brunch menu also has lots of options. I chose the pancakes which were nice & light, and full of flavour with fresh strawberries too. Only regret is that I forgot to add bacon! Check them out if you’re in the area,

I heard this restaurant is really popular so i tried it! First time I went here without booking, there was no seat available, so I made a booking the next day. I arrived ten mins earlier than the booking time, but had to wait about 20-30 mins until a table is ready for us. The waitress told me that they are just waiting for the other customers to get up. It was all ok for me to wait extra minutes but just made my expectations go up. Maybe it is why I did not think the food here was that great. Their food kinda had some SouthEast asian flavours and I did not find it either Japanese or Chinese as they say. However I liked the ambience and service. (Also the beer!!!!!!! Hahaha)

Came here after having visited the Penrose branch. It was great. :) The staff were attentive and friendly. The food was fantastic. I ordered the vegan/ GF tofu dish, and due to other dietary requirements needed certain other parts taken out and made 'allergy friendly' for me. This was no problem for them and they made an amazing meal. The other 3 people I was dining with had ribs, a beef dish, some sushi and the noodles, and every single meal was fresh, tasty and clearly well made. We all LOVED what we had.
For dessert the other people I dined with had the cookie dough ice cream, which was amazing and they loved it.
The food was reasonably priced, the staff friendly and very helpful and the atmosphere was relaxed and happy, (even though we stayed abit past closing, they still didnt make us feel rushed).
I loved it and will definitely be going back soon. :) Big thumbs up. :)

My good friend had a very positive experience dining at Big Fish Penrose so we were curious to try out the Stonefields branch.

The 'starter' we shared was the Tempura Soft Shell Crab. The quality of the frying was good but I found the combination of crab and deep-frying a little too oily. The Jalapeno dip they included was interesting. It was almost like a vinaigrette which unfortunately lacked in punch and the dish it came in (flat plate) made it hard to dip the crab in.

My main was the Bulgogi Beef. It was some thinly sliced steak, sauteed with mushrooms and onions served on top of white rice. The beef in my opinion was cooked to perfection but I found the overall dish too bland. It did not taste anything like traditional Korean Bulgogi.

My friend ordered the Tayylor Made Fried Rice. The fried rice incorporated BBQ pork, Chinese sausage, various vegetables and a half-cooked fried egg which I thought was cool. Overall a balanced dish that more closely resembled Japanese fried rice but with Chinese meats thrown in.

The service was very good despite the restaurant being so busy. We did not book but we were provided with a table after a party of two no-showed. The waiters were prompt and we were frequently asked how our meal was, but not too often. When I received my main, I didn't think it would fill me but after finishing my plate and half of the starter I can safely say I was full. The general aesthetic is nice and the restaurant attracts a diverse audience.

Nothing I had was particularly memorable as I found the flavours far too timid even though the chef executes the basic functions well. Big Fish strikes me as a restaurant that prioritizes form over substance and while it does not provide authentic tasting Asian food at all, is one I can see being successful due to the image it has created for itself.

Damn, best Pho out there! Love the char keow teow, pork and prawn salad too!

Friendly service, great wine selection, and flavoursome food!

Will be back!

I love this place...yummy food great sevice... small but cozy... have been telling everyone to come here ever since... asian fusion to the next level. I will definitely come back! If you are planning to come here, make sure to book in advance!

This is the second branch that recently opened in my neighbourhood. There were only two of us, so we could only have two dishes. The restaurant was fully packed with only two floor staff. Despite that, both staff were attentive and very efficient and friendly despite the pressure to serve such a big crowd. Thumbs up for both of them. We ordered the crispy pork papaya salad and the spiced salmon. The waitress very correctly advised us not to order extra steam rice because the salmon already comes with adequate rice. The salmon was cooked very well, not overcooked and coated with nice teriyaki type sauce and i found the seasoning to be spot on. Not too salty or sweet. The papaya salad was generous in serving with lots of shredded green papaya. The crispy pork crackling in the salad gave it a nice modern twist and also texture. I thought that was a brilliant modern interpretation of this very traditional thai dish. My only criticism was that there was not enough citrous kick in that salad. The salad was a bit dry. I would have given it a perfect score if it came with more dressing. Overall we were impressed and will definitely be back there again.

Really good food! Papaya salad was so yum! Tuna Tataki was very fresh! Big fish obviously use only fresh ingredients that’s why they stand out! :) Staff was friendly too! Im not giving 5 only because they made a mistake in one of our orders but that was not a big deal. Would come back definitely!

Highly recommended!
All the foods are excellent!!
Such a great and kind customer service.
Besides the price is reasonable.
I definitely gonna visit this place again.
I’m such a fan of big fish in penrose so was stoked to see they’ve opened a new one closer to me! Went for lunch with my mum and ordered sooo much food and it was all absolutely amazing! It was crazy busy and the waitress on duty was doing an amazing job being the only one on the floor at the time. We were seated quickly and the staff were so friendly. The tuna sashimi is to die for and such generous portions! You definitely get your money’s worth. Such amazing Asian food and so well priced!

How excited were we when Big Fish came to town (Stonefields town)..... Well that was until we had our first poor experience. We arrived at 17:25 to place a take away order, which we had to repeat 3 times for the lady to understand so we pointed to the meals, we were then asked to allow for 20 minutes for our order to be served.......40 minutes later our order was handed over! When we got home only 1 out of 4 meals were hot, the rest were cold & had to be heated up in the microwave which made the Karaage soggy :( Overall VERY disappointing customer service. The one star was given for the one hot meal which was delicious. Come'on Big Fish you can do better, customer service is king! p.s. Another couple waiting for their take away were complaining about how they weren't even able to place an order over the phone as the lady didn't understand them & therefore they had to come into the restaurant to order and then wait & wait & wait.......We are keen to know how you will improve on the above before we recommend or return to Big Fish Stonefields?

Giving them an extra star for interesting menu loaded with novelty. I had ordered takeaways of three reasonably simple dishes. (Simple as in you could prepare in a domestic kitchen) so i came away about 25 minutes later feeling they only deserved one star until they sort out their kitchen issues.
Having ordered by phone and told a 25 min waiting plus over an hour if you wanted home delivery, i duly showed up about 30 mins after expecting an in and out takeaway. Sadly waited over 15 maybe 20 before the staff says the delay is due to not being able to locate a key ingredient. She kindly offered me a glass of wine. Clearly this was standard as another person next to me was drinking as he waited for his takeaways. After another 5 mins was ready to cancel the offending dish given it was a simple home kitchen stuff-on-rice level dish. Within another 10 minutes food finally arrived. Getting home, no surprise the other two dishes were modestly warm with the deep fried S-S crab quite soft when the batter is best eaten crispy fresh. I had plenty of time to stare at the decor, a nice buzz to the place but a little cosy in some sitting areas.warm in winter. Waiting staff looked genuinely keen to please. I got a couple of odd looks from patrons wondering why i sitting by the toilets door so long.

I am a big fan of the penrose big fish (same owners) where i would be happy to return to. In fact can't wait. However the Stonefields is new and having trouble iron out the issues. Recommend staying away for the first 6months or sticking with the original.

This place prides itself on quality and for a very affordable price. By far the best pan asian eatery around the area and can’t go wrong with whatever you choose on the menu. Chef keeps a close eye on the customers demands and delivers - we were frequent customers of the Bigfish Eatery in Penrose as their Special Menu always offered something new
