Review Bangkok Thai Restaurant - Auckland

Always see this place when I'm around Queen street so it was quite exciting to actually try it. We were greeted after a bit of a wait and seated. It wasn't too hard to get the attention of the waiter when we were ready to order. I went with the Hor mok seafood since it sounded interesting. It didn't take long for the food to come out, about 15 minutes. the curry was really nice. It had nice flavour and it had the right amount of spiciness for me. It was held together by egg which is something that I really like so it was a win win. It had unlimited rice for the single order. The nice and flavourful curry makes it really nice place for Thai food.

We had a very nice experience here. The restaurant is beautiful and the service gracious. We had the green chicken curry and the mango curry with chicken, and both were excellent! We've been staying in the Bay of Plenty and haven't found any good Thai food there (we're fairly picky about it); so it was a treat to come to Auckland get introduced to this place by friends of ours who also love it (and are also picky).

As always...AMAZING staff are always friendly..we also brought a birthday cake with us which they were kind enough to take and keep it cooled then brought it out on a plate with all the cutlery we needed and even played the birthday song..we had a great night :-) Oh..and the food, tastey and well presented as expected..thank you!

I came here with friends and was surprised it wasn't busier on a Saturday night, but the food was yummy and the service was good. Generally the prices were okay, except for the starters - $13 is really too much for four small spring rolls which probably came from the freezer (not a criticism, most places do it that a way). But the gang dang tofu dish and roti I had were excellent, and a good portion size as well. I left extremely full and happy.

Close enough to walk to from work. Lunch was nice but the set lunch price has increased fro. $15 to $17 since we went about 8 weeks ago. Food was tasty.

Good food and ambience. Most of the cbd restaurants are loud and crowded hence i prefer going here. They even have a decent bar and the staff also seems to be good.

Enjoyable place to eat as a large group. Slightly more costly for lunch than other Thai places that do $13 lunch specials, but this included an entrée so was worth it if you want that extra. Nice staff and not overbearing.

Found out about this place through a GrabOne voucher $12 for 2x Mains and in the end bought another one for my wife and I. After thinking it was going to be a cheap pokey little place with mediocre food, I was absolutely impressed. This place is awesome! The staff are great, topping up water when we were running out. The food, OMG the food! It was devine!!! Especially for the price you pay. $12 for a main??? And $15.50 for the lunch special?! Wow. 5 stars for you. Thank you :)

Really yummy and authentic Thai food. Well presented restaurant with a nice atmosphere. Food was fresh, quick and affordable. Would definitely come here again.

Great for sitting large groups and getting the food out. Unfortunately my partners food came out after everyone else had finished so worth following up if your food hasn't arrived! Yum food!

I am a Korean guy and work in Auckland. I like really spicy foods. They have load of spicy and good foods. I usually have Padthai, Thai hot, extra noodle and Picnabba(?, which is very spicy chilli with fish source.) It is my favourite. Staff is kind and nice. I recommend here.😁

Great choice of food. Has a good range of spice available for what you would want. Only thing is that you are charged extra for rice. Still a great experience

I got a duck curry. The flavour was ok, not amazing. But it had frozen peas and corn that weren't even properly defrosted! Won't be going back

Food was okay. I could have enjoyed myself but as soon as I entered, it felt like I was being scrutinised by the lady who I assume is the manager. The place was completely empty on a Friday night except for one table. I thought this was strange, especially for a restaurant in the CBD. We were told the corkage is $10.50. Okay, that's not a problem although that's quite a high price. Food was over priced for the portion and quality. I've had some amazing Thai dishes at a very cheap price. The restaurant is meant to close at 10.30 according to their website. At 10pm the waiter was approaching our table even though we were still eating and started trying to take our plates, also saying they were closing soon. I've never experienced a restaurant forcing their customers to finish their meal and drinks. Also, this was 30 mins before their actual closing time. All this happened while the female manager watched from afar giving us very dirty looks and obviously saying horrible things to the waiter about us. Anyways, I've learnt there's a reason why some places are so quiet on what should be the busiest night. Please save you're money and go elsewhere :)

Very good and authentic Thai food. Ordered the large Tom Yum and Fish. Fish was really tasty and portion is good. The portion of Tom Yum with prawns was a little small. It is ok with Zomato Gold, but not worth it for the price if you're not a Gold member. The taste was good though, and the servers were friendly as well.

No issue with Zomato Gold 1+1 redemption on mains. Food was good will definitely visit again!

The waitress who served us was very helpful and frienappreciate restaurant is upstairs without lift. My baby was sleeping in the stroller when we finished the meal. She helped us to carry the stroller down and we really appreciate it.

Went on a Friday 11:30 lunch where it was quiet but speedy service.

The Thai fried rice was a touch on the bland side but the vegetarian red curry was yum, authentic and reminded me of my family's cooking.

Overall enjoyed it and would recommend

We got the mixed entree platter, green curry with beef and pad see ew with prawn.
We loved the entree platter and the green curry. The curry was tasty and spicy but not thick. So could enjoy the taste.
Pad see ew was good by itself, but when compared with the entree platter and the green curry than it became just an average dish.

Had a golden wok and curry dish. Food tasted great, especially the curry dish which was adequately spicy. Ordered two drinks, a thai milk tea and a lychee shake. Thai milk tea was good, however the lychee shake was too sweet, hence I would not reccomend the shake for those who are not a fan of sweet beverages. Ambience was good and it wasn't crowded at noon. Overall, it was a good experience. Would recommend!

Pretty decent food. Their ‘medium’ definitely has a kick to it. Definitely more of a hot than a medium to me.

As a zomato gold member I’ve had a few experiences with hearing the staff being grumpy about being part of zomato gold. It’s a real turn off. Good service apart from that though.

We always like the food there. Now it’s even better with Zomato gold membership. We love the green curry with duck. Will definitely come back.

This place has been around for a very long time.
Came here for dinner and was pleasantly surprised by how fast and great their food tasted.
They are a bit more pricey but service and serving portion does make up for it.

Definitely a nice place to spend the night and the foods they served are worth the price.. we ordered pineapple fried rice and pork mango curry which are the best thai food i ever tried.. will go here again next time

I always try to say nice things about a restaurant coz I know food service isn’t easy, but this time I’m just Very disappointed with my experience here.
First of all, they made us pay before the food even came, saying it was because we had a large group of people using Zomato Gold, im not too fussed as I do understand it can get messy.
The food is expensive for its price, most dishes don’t come with rice so you need to pay extra, would be a rip off if I didn’t use Gold. Corkage fee came to 9.50 which is pretty expensive.
What’s worse there is a minimum spending of 17.50 per person, beware guys Entrees are below that price, most of us went not very hungry so that was very painful. Plus because I couldn’t finish my food I asked for takeout, they even charged me 2.50 to take away, and was like we usually don’t do this for other customers???
Not to mention disrespectable service as the waiter kept staring at me as if I was going to escape the payment and coming over during the middle of us talking to get me to go pay for the takeout.
The manager said in a few month they won’t have Zomato gold anymore, but I will never never come back again nonetheless.

Okay. I like the atmosphere and I’ll give credit for the cleanliness of the restaurant and the good food.
Ordered the Chicken Pad Thai and it’s delicious.

However, I’m unhappy with the customer service that my friends and I had to deal with.
It wasn’t welcoming, didn’t felt like I was going into a cosy restaurant.. felt like we were discriminated because of our outfit. Quite a number of us used Zomato Gold and we were basically told that it’s the company policy that we had to pay while we were in the middle of our dinner.

I don’t see them asking other customers to pay for their meal while they were having their dinner. Felt that it was very rude of them when we wanted clarification on why we were asked to pay while we were having our meals. Doesn’t seem right.
Their reasoning was because previously they had a bad experience with large group of people. Understandable, but at least ask before the meal arrives. But then, they were like.. we never had so many people using Zomato gold on one table. And? Ok
That’s not a good excuse for you to treat us rudely and interrupt us while we were having our dinner.

Personally, I wouldn’t go back because of the customer service.
If you’re having a bad day, please just don’t throw your temper onto your customer. :/
Geoff
Got angry at a group of us using Zomato Gold and treated us like second class making us pay while we were eating our meals... It seems they were discriminating on us because of our looks or Zomato Gold-ness... Also were rude to us the whole time during service... Food was okay but didn't make up for the extremely poor service experience

The restaurant was nice, great ambience and all. Actually set quite a good first impression, but it was ruined.

I came in with a group of friends and a number of us had zomato gold. Staffs were great, except one person who I think was the mnager/owner (he dressed differently from the other staffs).

We were interrupted halfway when we were eating to pay for our food. There was no apology. We were quite upset about it, and one friend expressed his unhappiness and the manager tried to explained that it was the restaurant's policy. I could understand if we were asked to pay first, right after ordering. But interrupted halfway while eating? Thats just rude. They probably need a change in the policy. I saw at least 2 other big groups and they werent treated as such. And his reason was that "there were so many zomato gold users" in our group. So just because there were many zomato gold users we had to be treated rudely? Ruined my experience.

The 2 stars are for the other friendly staffs who served us on that night! Thank you for your service.

Food was average, and I used my friend's zomato gold. Full price? Not too sure if its worth it. Well, at least for me, I'll never recommend this place to anyone.

It’s been a while since we visited this restaurant. Lovely cosy setting. Fried snapper with lemongrass is highly recommended. Was so well deep-fried, still juicy and not too dry. The mango chicken was a bit too sweet like most Thai dishes. Prices were great especially with Zomato Gold which gets you a free main with at least another main ordered.
To join Zomato Gold, quote this code for a 20% discount. LITTLETD

I came for dinner after checking their menu on zomato. Turns out their dinner menu is 2x the price but exact same dishes. Also, their menu is suuuuper misleading. Authentic thai pineapple fried rice should be served in a pineapple. This place's version of the dish should be named fried rice with a piece of pineapple. Their thai salad pork ribs was a plate of burnt ribs covered in overpowering sauce with barely any salad. Will never be returning due to a misleading menu, ridiculous pricing, below average food. Staff is super nice though

Really good food! Definitely worth the gold.
Started with the chicken strips which were delicious. The chicken was spicy just as asked and the red curry was very authentic. Loved the place and great service.

Good environment, friendly service. and food tastes good. Ordered a curry on rice and my friend got pineapple fried rice. would definitely go back again.
food 4/5
service 4/5
ambiance 4.5/5

Went as two people dinner, excellent service and food, will definitely visit again. Super friendly when asked for zomato gold 1+1. Thank you!

Zomato gold no issues at all!
Yummy food! The waiter who took our order was very friendly.
He also made sure to come back halfway throughout our meal to check on us and if the food was spicy the way we wanted it.
Love the fried fish and Panang curry!
Good atmosphere too.

Visited this restaurant today for lunch. We came quite late, around 2pm so there was no customer at the restaurant. The guy who served us was not friendly at all, in fact he was so grumpy really. We ordered tom yum goong & green curry with chicken. The food was good but I could not enjoy it to my fullest because of the service. Anyway it is still good deal for 2 if you have Zomato gold. I was so disappointed that I forgot to take photos of the food, which I normally do when eating out as u can see in all my reviews.

It was a very cold weather even in the mission of the day. That is why we ordered curry and pineapple fried rice.
Curry is quite thick in flavour and a lot of sauce. Beef in the curry is well cooked and soft and juicy.
Good lunch!

This beautiful restaurant has become one of my favourite recently since I knew them from Zomato Gold. Great location on Queen Street near Smith and Caughey, suitable for both small and big group as the space is big enough to cover many ppl.

Pathai noodles, Green curry and Fish are always safe to choose if you don't know what to choose.
Ayoooo no lie this place damn good. Had some dinner here with my mate and let's just say the food definitely lived up to its reputation. It was on point, came on time and the service was great too. My mate recommended this place after he spent a work event here and looks like I'm gonna come here with my work mates too since it's a BYO! Cant get better than that

Went for a team lunch here - food’s always amazing ... wonderful ambience and food.. it has lots of seating and their lunch special menu is a bargain! I ordered the fried rice and it was amazing! Definitely one I would go back to. Service was a little bit of a let down as we had to bring the water when we ran out. So that needs improving..

Nice decorated Thai restaurant . But the portion size of the food is just way too small for the price point. taste great ! But just can’t help fell been cheap out

4/5 Taste
3/5 Display
3.5/5 Quantity
4/5 Customer Service

Average Thai Restaurant in CBD

I eat a lot of Chinese food but before I started eating Chinese I always had Thai food.
I know my Thai food, I know what they should look like, what they should smell like and what the texture should be like.
The deep fried whole fish were great, portion was big, fish was well cooked, even the sauce was pretty lit. Tony Ma munched on these like no tomorrow.
Mussaman Curry was a little disappointing, the beef was really dry in the inside it seemed like the beef had been pre frozen and just microwaved before being cooked. The oil of the curry had been separated from the curry making it look less appealing. Taste was pretty good tho, a lot better than restaurants who serve runny curry.
Som Tam is my favourite dish and it was sad to see no papaya had been used in it. The sauce and the flavour was really good tho, I really enjoyed it.
Amazing location! Never new they were on the second floor corner. Didn’t even know this place existed! Very large restaurant however seems a little worn down.

The food was very worth due to zomato Gold. But the beef was dry maybe prefrozen, the fish tasted ok.

Overall very monies worth.

Service: 4/5
Environment: 2/5
Presentation: 2/5
Food Quality: 3/5
Food Quantity: 5/5

Price per person: $7-$20

Pretty average Taifood. Good atmosphere. Unhappy service. Honestly I went there because of Zomato gold’s benefits, but without that, I won‘t go there..

My boyfriend and I always opt for Pad Thai or Tom Yum Goong whenever we have Thai food, so this time we decided to go ahead and each try something different.

I ordered a Rad Na Seafood and my boyfriend got a Pad See Ew w/ Chicken. I loved the flavours of the rad na as my tastebuds were welcomed with the familiar taste of oyster sauce, something that I grew up having quite a lot. There was a good variety of seafood on the plate, I especially loved the scallops, and there was a good amount of rice noodles tucked away at the bottom. The pad see ew was delicious and it seriously makes me wonder why I’ve never ordered it before. The soy sauce wasn’t too overdone so the flavours were balanced very well, and this dish is definitely something I will opt for next time. Plating of the two dishes were presented quite well.

The dinner prices for this place were quite steep (although justifiable for seafood), so it was definitely worthwhile to use our gold membership. Service was efficient and friendly. There was a bit of an issue with lots of small fruit flies flying on and around our table although that seemed to be resolved once we closed the window a bit.
Priscilla Mac
I’m glad we had zomato gold because the prices here are pretty high for what you get. We ordered the Beef Pad Thai and the Chicken Panang Curry. We actually enjoyed the curry the flavors were really great. The pad Thai on the other hand was way smaller than we expected and the beef was tough and dry. It was an okay experience but I just don’t think I’d go back. Could get more for cheaper prices else where.

Tip: if they seat you next to a window. Make sure you close it. Our food got cold really fast from the wind blowing through (since it’s on the second floor)

This restaurant is tucked away behind stairs on Wellesley street and has a really nice grandeur feeling to it, complemented by the authentic dress and hospitality of the staff who were very warm and welcoming.

The tables were also setup as full service with table napkins and cutlery, which is often missed in Auckland's casual approach but I find to be a nice gesture.

Drinks - I ordered the Thai milk tea and it was really good, and very well made, soothing on a humid Auckland evening.

Food - The chicken Larb was really good and they serve you as much rice as you require, which was a nice touch. The rice was of really good grain and quality, and the Larb tasted exceptionally good.

The one thing I can't figure out is why this place was deserted on a Thursday evening - it deserves a crowd!

Microwaved green curry not impressed at all. However service staff were polite and friendly. Will not visit again due to poor quality of food

Excellent food with zomato gold. Friendly manager. Nice and quiet place with positive vibes for dinner. We will go back again highly recommend.

Very nice and quiet place in the city center. ❤️ Food is amazing, I had delicious Tom Yum. Interior looks very fancy but prices actually are very affordable.

I visited Bangkok restaurant with a friend, tried to avail Zomato gold benefits. Firstly there were no English speaking waiters/store manager.

Secondly they were not clear about Zomato gold. They said I had to buy two dishes and get the third one for free and I can only choose mains to get Zomato gold deal. When I tried to get one main dish and get the next one for free as per the deal, they refused it.

Also, I was told that Zomato deal is applicable only for mains and not applicable if I skip mains and order just the appetisers by the store manager that serviced although Zomato gold terms says otherwise. It says that gold membership allows for all items in a la carte menu except platter and it doesn't exclude appetizer in terms. I tried to show that to the manager but he was stubborn and rude, making a scene in front of other people in the restaurant.

I had to leave the place cos I paid only an hour for parking and they made us wait and wasted most of it trying to explain its buy 2 get the third for free. Wouldn't recommend unless you've spare time and you're ready to waste a couple of hours trying to get them to understand Zomato gold
This place takes me back to memory lane, it was the first BYO restaurant I had been to and this was like 5-6 years ago. In terms of the layout setting, its resembles closely to my memory with no major differences.

I couldn’t recall the quality of food so I came with open expectations, the food isn’t bad.

It’s relatively standard Thai food but the price was absolutely ridiculous, I guess being a BYO restaurant that was to be expected. There wasn’t anything wrong with my food it just tasted fairly standard. Looking at some of my friends other dishes, I’ll have to say that everything looked pretty standard and no one had any complaints.

Showstopper: Ultimately it comes down to the occasion. If I were a lover of Thai food and wanted a authentic meal, theres no way I would come here. On the flip side, BYO spot in the city that can accomodate a large crowd? You can’t much better than Bangkok.

Overall Grade: B

First time coming to this restaurant. Lunch menu was affordable and have big portions. Friendly staff, quick service and pretty delicious clean food. Chicken slightly dry, it was very quiet but overall a delicious meal.

After having my genuine feedback deleted, this HORRIBLE experience has continued. The service was abysmal. When we booked there was no mention of needing to order a main each. The manager was extremely rude about this and didn’t consider that some people may not be able to afford certain dishes (which were overpriced and full of MSG). I understand that rice, drinks and corkage cost... however, I did not order nor bring any of this. The larb was priced as 18.50 on the menu but I was charged 22.50. I pointed this out beforehand and yet she still insisted that was the price. I was really looking forward to an authentic Thai meal but unfortunately will not be returning due to the insulting service.

Went for a birthday dinner on a Saturday night around 7.30pm. The place was still quite empty for a Saturday which was surprising and after my meal I’m still not too sure why.

My friend and I ordered the spicy basil chicken stir fry which was super hot. We didn’t specify the level of spice, so was surprised to find it very spicy. However my friend and I both love the meal and found it very flavoursome. It was easily shared between the 2 of us, though I would say if you have a larger appetite one meal per person is better.

My other friends ordered vegetarian pad Thai which was really large quantity and had lots of veggies and tofu. It wasn’t the best pad Thai I have had but still good.

One thing I wasn’t a fan of was that rice was served individually, as a waiter comes around and dishes it out for you. I understand this stops wastage, but would prefer them to give a bowl of rice so you can take as you please and judge your own portions.

The food wait wasn’t too long even in a big group and everyone got served their meals around the same time. The staff were friendly and accommodating and were good with dealing with changing orders (my friends asking to remove items from their dishes).

Very keen to come back for their lunch specials.

One of the worst restaurants I have ever been to in Auckland. I was pretty tired on one evening and didn't read the menu carefully. As a result, I pronounced the name of one dishes wrong. What surprised me the most was all off the sudden the waitress who was taking my order started to laugh at me in front of all my friends. Her attitude was just disgusting throughout the night. In terms of the food,it was quite average to say the least and bloody expensive. I certainly wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone.

A nice chic thai restaurant with an average decor.
Tables we were sitting at was dirty and sticky. There were 3 other big groups and just made the experience more pathetic as they were loud and the wait staff didnt even bothered to calm them down as they were far too drunk.

We had ordered vegetarian fresh spring rolls but wasn’t worth the money as it was an average dish you would get in any food alley.

We had also ordered vegetarian fried rice and pad thai. Pad thai was great but fried rice had no salt in it.

Customer service was bad as when we told the wait staff who were chatting on the bar, rather than providing customer service, i had to walk up to the bar to talk to them. When this was communicated to them, they simply put all the sauces and salt n pepper on the table without getting to know what had actually happened.

At that point we had already given up due to noise and poor customer service.

If you are looking for thai food, go to food court across the street where you might get better experience and food. #notgoingbackagain

The Green Curry was beautiful! Would love to order it again as it had a lovely blend of spices and that signature green curry coconutty flavour! The pineapple chicken rice was really bland and overpriced..and the Pad Thai a little too sweet. Very spacious and a nice ambience for fine dining tho.

Came here for my friend’s 21st dinner. Easy to come here for lunch or dinner if you work/live in city. The starters were okay-pretty average tbh. I ordered pineapple fried rice as main and was really looking forward to it cause it was my first time. However, they tasted awful. They had put so much turmeric in the rice for the colour that I could only taste turmeric and nothing else. Tbh, they should name it turmeric rice instead of pineapple. 🙃 My friend who orders Pad-Thai said it was too sweet but was okay. Never going to come here again. The service was average.
Maryt041266
Had our work Christmas lunch here and it was VERY disappointing. Service was atrocious with many people still without their entree after an hour wait and mains even longer. As we only had 2 hours for lunch some left without eating. We pre booked and sent our meal choices in advance but this made no difference. Shameful! We will NOT be going back - ever.

Great service, great food at very good prices. Staff are friendly, helpful and attentive. Food arrived fast and one of the best Thai we've had.
Red Bean
Had the massaman curry and rice. Beef was tender but overall wouldn’t order it again, the curry itself was pretty average. Slightly overpriced but location, service, ambience and general feel of the place was so wonderful that I would definitely return to try other things on the menu.
Jenny
Food is average, as with portion size. Manager isn't that friendly. Have been here a few times so this wasn't a one-off. View outside is nice though.
Michael Jones
While members of my group were in line to pay the bill staff accused other members of not paying and ran after them even though they had already paid. Very rude staff and we will not return.

Come here a lot. Great lunch deals and always hot tasty food. Staff are friendly and service is really fast. Nice view of Queen St and a nice option for a uni lunch. Will be back soon

GOOD! Although my boyfriend ordered a much better dish than I did, I'm still happy cz he gave me some x) very affordable prices for lunch. Recommend! :)

Came here for dinner on a Sunday. We got 1 entree and 2 mains.

Entree was alright nothing too special. The mains were yummy, good portions and not skimpy on the ingredients. We ordered the Hor Mok Seafood and the Pla Ma Now.

However, I think it's not that good value for money given the normal price of $18-25 for each main but it doesn't come with rice. So you still gotta add $3 to get a bowl of rice.
Kirsten
Came here since I was craving Thai food and their lunch meals were $12. Quite a quiet and grand restaurant with poor customer service. The workers were expressionless and unwelcoming. Ordered the Pork Pad Thai and friend ordered the Beef Thai Noodle Soup. The food came out quite fast; my Pad Thai was more of a lukewarm to hot temperature, which was unpleasant in my books. The taste was surprisingly good, however I just wished they had given me more pork and some veges at least!
Quality! It Shouldnt Be That Hard! Love A Wonderful Mouth Full Of Wholesome FOOD!
I came here for dinner. I had a mixed entree the best part was the money bag it was so moist with nigh chucks of veggies by far the best I have ever had. Spring roll was hard,
I had whole snapper it was ok but nothing to brag about when it comes to Thai I like it very spicy this was medium even though I told them very spicy in Thai language! I'll go back to try something different.

The staff are friendly the layout is quiet big!
I_like_pickles
Came here for lunch for their lunch special set menu: appetiser and main at $17. Pity they aren't open for lunch during the weekend as well.

The restaurant is upstairs and gives a great view of Queen street. The decor and ambience is lovely. It feels very fancy with all the fancy furniture and napkins.

We got the curry puffs and satay skewers for appetisers and shared it so we could taste both. The curry puffs were flavourful and had a crispy pastry. The satay skewers were tender and were smothered in a delicious satay sauce.

For mains we shared a green curry and a larb salad. The green curry didn't have much meat in it, only a few pieces and was a bit watery. It was still packed with flavour though. The larb was delicious. Very refreshing and I loved all the herbs and the toasted rice on top. The Tom Kha is delicious as well. Lots and lots of chicken and vegetables. The portions are pretty decent as well.

Staff were friendly although it did take a while for the food to be served.

Overall a great dining experience. Would definitely dine here again.
Charlene Weaver
Average Thai food but a good place for BYO dinners as it's very large inside and corkage is cheap at only $5 per person. Service was efficient and the food came out quite quickly considering there was a big group of us.

A friend and I weren't too hungry so we just shared the vegetarian pad Thai and spring rolls. The pad Thai was ok, lacked flavour and you could tell the vegetables weren't fresh, they were too soft and I prefer my vegetables crunchy! The spring rolls were average too, nothing special.

Not the greatest Thai food I've had but not bad either, although the $12 lunch special they have is good value for money.
LilMSunshine
The place was actually superb. Interiors and lighting provides a good ambience for family dinners and special functions. There's still improvement in terms of food quality. The Green Curry was a bit runny and color of Pad Thai could be a bit more appealing. Price is reasonable and recommended Thai Restaurant if you're in Queen St.

Been here a couple of times. The food is always good but the service..... prepare to be insulted. The lady who appeared to be the manager needs a lesson in politeness. She was openly rude to a number of the group including when trying to pay (one bill one card so should've been no issue). So a mixed review all round but down due to service

We visited here for a byo dinner before a gig in town. With the close proximity to auckland central and of course appeal of Thai food and byo wine we didn't think anything could go wrong.

Ordered the usual pad Thai for me and my partner the pad see ew the noodle lovers we are. Food was fine, average to other Thai places.

And as the night went by we became the last table left in the restaurant. And I work in hospo, so I definitely knew we should be leaving soon. Finishing the remainder of our wine one of the waitresses called out from across the restaurant asking if we were finishing soon. Not politely coming to our table as you would expect.

We got up to pay our bills and went to quickly use the bathrooms. Unfortunately one of my fake eyelashes was coming off so i started to get my makeup to quickly fix it.
Abruptly one of the waitresses comes in to the bathroom and turns off the lights not saying a word to us and leaves.
We leave too, being shocked they did that.

Coming out of the bathrooms the restaurant is pitch black and we pull out the flashlights on our phone as we stumble our way to the exit down the stairwell.

Working in hospitality I know what's expected from the job and the service. And dinner here was possibly the worse experience I've ever had

Would not go back

Often go here for lunch. Really close to Uni with yum food and lovely ambiance... like a mini getaway between classes!

Next time I will try different things from the menu rather than getting Pad Thai all the time.

Went here with my daughter. Staff were very friendly and attentive. For starters we had the curry puffs which were some of the nicer ones I have had. For mains we had the pad Thai and roast duck and pineapple curry. Both dishes were very tasty.

The first time to visit this place tonight. Grabbed two mains and two drinks with one $30.00 voucher. So I just paid $14.50 for mixed entree platter and rice. Green curry with duck was too salty to us. White rice was very good texture. Waiters were very friendly to us.
Haden
Went here with a grab one voucher. The manager was slightly unfriendly but maybe a language thing idk. The waiter was nice and the food was good. I'd come here again.

Had lunch there last Friday. The attitude of the waitress was really, well, let's just say "un-friendly". I asked to leave some spice out of the dish and that's when she began acting impatient. When the dish was served, I saw something suspicious and then I called her. She answered my question quite loud, using a tone which makes me feel like I was doing something wrong. It ended up with me packed the food and gave to one of my friends.
According to my girlfriend, who goes there on a regular basis, their cook could be changed that's why the dishes we ordered that day look different and funny.
When eating outside, I tend to care about the service more then the food itself. I didn't enjoy eating there at all. And to be honest, I will definitely not recommend this restaurant to any of my friend.

BKK restaurant has really good $12 and $15.50 lunch set meals that are filling and flavour some! We had the sweet sour chicken, cashew beef and of course pad Thai! The portions were nice and the starters were really well cooked too. We will definitely visit again!

I purchased a Grabone voucher as thought its a good deal to try this semi new thai restaurant.

Upon arrival the staffs hospitality was appalling. I dont know if he was the owner but his attitude and body language lacked a warm and friendly hospitality. Furthermore the manager came to our table and caused a fuss about our vouchers..and even walked away in a huffy..very strange and abnormal hospitality. Usually thai hospitality is amazing so was very surprised.. This was not a great start to a first impression of the place!

We decided to ignore the incident, even though we just wanted to walk out of there. We then ordered our 4 dishes which consisted of steamed fish fillet in coriander and ginger spicy sauce, thai panang curry with chicken, thai grilled beef salad with shallots, lemongrass, tomatoes and spring onion and lastly the Stirfry prawns with cashew nuts and chilli. The food was surprisingly delicious! Hmmm guess they knew they had to recover the damages by serving us delicious food 😐

The four dishes we ordered tasted authentic with lots of lemongrass, lime, coconut milk and chilli. The pinot noir wine complimented our dishes very well. At this stage with their delicious dishes we kind of forgave and forgotten their bad hospitality. .

To end our meal we had their desert of banana fritters with vanilla icecream which concluded our meal nicely. The banana fritters were uniquely fried in a spring roll pastry not like its batter type fritter I've had in other thai restaurants. Definitely more delicious and less oily.

The taste of the food ended up to be beyond my expectation and we left feeling very satisfied and full. If they worked on their hospitality this place could go far!

My final rating for this place is:
Food: 5/5
Service : 1.5/5
Ambience: 3/5

The flavours of the dishes that we ordered, customer service and ambience did not disappoint. Food arrived on time but they had forgotten to bring us one of the drinks that we had ordered, but they immediately apologised and remedied the situation. Overall we would come here again

I love Thai food.
For starter I ordered satay chiken.
It was a little bit dry and over cook.
For main I order Green curry and it was on point. We had a fish on our dish and it was body good.cooked very well and Jouce was with a lot of taste.
Price are good too.
It was worth to try

Perched oddly on top of the building on the corner of Queen Street and Wellesley Street West, Bangkok is great value for thai food and a decent BYO.

I went here a few weeks ago with some friends from work. The food here is decent and their lunch special is a pretty good deal ($11.50 for a main). Service was above average.

Overall, great value - decent food.
KS
Disappointing. Firstly the host/waitress had some attitude issues. Secondly - dishwise -Ordered duck curry and all I got was duck skin and fat, hardly any meet. Duck skin hasn't even been plucked properly. When asked the owner if he thinks this is acceptable a reply was that this is the way they cook as duck is expensive.. terrible service and bad food. Will never go back and would not recommend to anyone. Felt like it's a low grade fast food place.

Although located in the heart of Auckland CBD, the noise-proofing is so good, I was barely aware of the hustle and bustle outside.

According to the first page of the menu, it had seating for 160 people, so if you're planning on going on a weeknight, probably don't need to bother booking.

The menu is really extensive and the beef manaman curry was very generous and very yummy. Combine that with the great service and good prices, I'll definitely be going back.

How have I not reviewed this place before? This place is a great work BYO choice for the city...especially for large groups of people. The restaurant could probably seat 50 which is rare for a CBD BYO. They do cheap lunch set meals too which are great value and pretty good. Overall, the food is above average for a thai restaurant, the service is good and they are accomidating re BYO...ie the put up with a few cheeky bottles of wine.
Zebedee
had a business dinner at bangkok, wasn't bad but nothing special either. went for the massaman curry for main, was ok. had the fish cakes for entrée, again ok. if you like fairly plain thai food, this is the place for you.
staff are really nice and helpful.
Victoria
The restaurant itself is quite nicely decorated and the staff friendly but don't think I'll be back. Ordered a seafood Pad Thai and as is the case with most places it was far too sweet and overly westernised. If you haven't been to Thailand you might not be too let down but at least with the Pad Thai - nothing like the real stuff.

Bit of a pet peeve when they serve lemon's instead of lime's, keeps the costs down but definitely misses the nice zesty hit.
Razelle Icaro
Still one of my favourite restaurants not only because of the food but also the friendly service. This is the best thai place in town in my opinion, and I'm addicted to their Pad Thai! They also have a lunch deal for only $13.50! Food might be a bit more expensive at dinner but their cocktails are really good!
Sharan Dhanala
Frequent lunch spot with my work mates. Friendly staff, great service. The part that they can work on is to introduce more varieties of dishes.
Nicole Melchor
Came here for a work lunch last week with a group of colleagues. Their lunch special was well priced, $16.50 got you a main from one of the selections + an entree.

The waitress that took our orders was friendly and attentive and impressively remembered where all of the dishes went. However in saying that, the restaurant was starting to fill up and she was the only person taking orders and delivering them in the whole restaurant.

The food took a while to come out, with a lot of our group finishing their meals when myself and 2 other colleagues had just gotten ours. Our meals didn't start arriving till 35-40mins of waiting (and that was for the people who got their food first).

The pad Thai was ok. I've had pad Thai from a lot of different places and this was by far my least favourite. It was very salty that I didn't end up eating it all. The upside was there was a generous amount of chicken in it. The overall serving size of the pad thai was quite small. The only saving grace was the 2 chicken satay I got as the entree. They were well sized and seasoned.
Jessica Harris
The restaurant is the old London Bar located upstairs on the corner of Queen Street and Wellesley Street,

Ordered the mixed platter and fish cakes for starters. The mixed platter was okay in general however the fish cakes (for which there were a generous number of them) were rubbery.
We ordered the Thai Green Curry (chicken) and Pad Med Ma Moung (beef). Both mains were simply unmemorable and lacking the distinct flavours characteristic of Thai cuisine.

We went early evening when the restaurant was fairly full. Unfortunately there was not enough wait staff and due to this they were harried and inattentive.
I'm A Foodie
First time visit this restaurant and it really impressed me, food, service are excellent, I bought vouchers from groupon, nice price for 5 pp, all the food we ordered are delicious.
Eric Shu
We came here for dinner and I must say they impressed us as always and the food we had was deep fried fish and Tom yum gong which is stunning!!
The service was good as always and we definitely will come back again!!
Padthana Souriyavong
Very nice food and staff, lots or variety not only thai food but also laos food, beautiful environment and the prices are spot on. Would recommend and definitely going back
Cristina
Food was really good! Would definitely go back again! Not only do they have a variety of thai food they also have a selection of Laos food aswell! The environment was peaceful, clean and the service was excellent

Went using a Grabone voucher. Great food, can't fault the food. But it's a shame that the Waitstaff bring the quality of the experience to below average. The manager on duty, was really rude, maybe because we were on Grabone, but that should not make a difference. We chose to order an entree and were abruptly told that it wasn't covered by the voucher even though we were well aware and that put us off from ordering outside the voucher (point of these vouchers should be to expand sale, and retain customers which I think they didn't utilise). We were served and forgotten about.. there was another waitress in addition to the manager and she was lovely but she was the only one on the floor looking after everyone so couldn't be as attentive given she was alone. Hopefully they improve Customer service by miles, and this Restaurant will be the best in the Thai cuisine to go to.

I went this restaurant whis my family for lunch.i love the tomyum seafood. N fried rice was good too.interior, location, service were all good. And food was good too. Tomyum was a bit sweet and thick side. But taste was so good. I definately will visit again.

Firstly I feel the previous ratings were in no way comparable to the experience I had today. I came here with my foodie partner using his Groupon voucher at lunch. We got two meals for $16 which was an excellent price. I was expecting a run down alleyway corner place as we thought it was a voucher for kingslands Bangkok and because of the awful ratings. But to my delight it was a up kept amazing looking place. The waitress had trouble speaking English but both her and the manager made sure everything was perfect! We shared the panang curry and pad Thai which were DELICIOUS ! The pad Thai was the star it just had a je ne sais quoi about it. I would come back if I had the chance and I would pay full price
Zoe Huang
It’s at the corner of Wellesley & Queen St. The price of dish for the lunch menu are all under $15, most of them are $11.5, sea food option will be higher. The environment is good but it was not very busy at lunch time. We ordered tom yum rice noodle soup ($11.5) and panang beef curry ($11.5) with rice. The flavour of tom yum was very nice and rich, highly recommended. However, generally the red curry we ordered was nice too apart from the sweetness, which is too strong. Bill can be split but you will be charged extra 5% for using credit card.
Vika Dorokhova
Food was not very appealing. Both visually and taste-wise. The decor is confusing and cd kept skipping on one song for the duration of our stay. Staff not very friendly. Would prefer any of the foodcourts around to this restaurant.
John BENS
Well a lesson in making a reservation. This was #3 choice as first two full.
Ok meal but no wow factor. Would not go back.
chicken wings were charcoal pork ribs tough
Chicken satay average
Steamed whole snapper served in cold soup which was heated after the table cooker fan out
General malaise about staff and restaurant. All rath
Came here for lunch a couple weeks ago. Decor was a okay, nothing to really say wow about. We were taken to our tables really quickly.

The lunch menus are a good deal especially in the city. I was able to get a huge plate of fried rice for $11.50. Taste wise, it was quiet an ordinary plate of fried rice but I guess they have to reduce the intensity of the flavors for everyone.

I would recommend this place if you want a lunch with friends but there are better places for dinner in the city.

Came here upon my work colleague's recommendation as he's a regular customer. I knew prior there were many bad reviews of this place, but as I was hungry, I thought to give it a go. Initially my friend thought the restaurant was still closed as the reception or lobby area was empty. Interesting that a vacuum cleaner was there instead of hidden away from view.

The ladies were busily arranging the tables and cutlery when we arrived. One of them was not very friendly to us at all. But we managed to stay despite this, so my friend had Phad Thai while I chose the Panang Curry. I ordered another serving of rice because to be honest it was nice. They were let down by the unfriendly attitude and service I felt from her. However, she was especially friendly towards the white customers. I don't wanna assume but from the way she treated us, it was like she was not happy we were there. It also looked like they don't take negative reviews seriously. Good thing though I wasn't charged extra for the rice.

I might not come to this restaurant ever again. Good food, nice website, nice ambience, but very unfriendly service.
Trin
Probably one of the best thai restaurants I have been to! Good flavour and portion. Staff were friendly and attentive. Definitely recommend their satay chicken and money bags as entree. The panang chicken curry was yummy!

Never noticed this restaurant before as it's upstairs. We actually walked straight pass it when we were trying to look for the restaurant.
Dianne Macwilliam
Was the worst pad thai i have ever tasted! The pork dish was tasteless too!The manager was rude and said we were he first to ever complain - i don't think so!Was expensive and very disappointing -will not recommend or return.
Saroch Torthenchi
this is an amazing place to dine in with ur friends or family. i been there so many times, the lunch menu is cheap and way yummier than typical Thai restaurant, especially their green curry. i had tried their prawn cake and lamb rack for dinner , prawn cake was so juicy, and lamb's dish doesn't have any smell at all. if u r looking for great place to dine i would recommend ur guys to go there.
Btw the service is also perf.
Richard
Not good
Starters were over cooked.
Rice was served stone cold and when replaced was again cold.
We both had the golden wok which was well presented in a fried noodle basket but really only average.

Would not recommend
Gevena Thompson
Brought a voucher. Had a mixed platter entrée each. Great presentation. Food tasted devine. The mains pad thai and thai green curry were huge with plenty of meat and flavor. Service was friendly. Restaurant was spacious and clean. I am a fan of thai food and this was top value and quality. We will be back.

I have been here two times now.

First time I went there I was a little scared because of the reviews I have read about this place.

But I was pleasantly surprised by this place. The first time I went with my cousin and her friend before a concert and we brought some wine to have with dinner, which this is just a $5 charge for BYO. The food was beautiful and the staff were very lovely and very fast service. We had such a lovely time.

Second time I went was with my boyfriend, we were greeted at the door by a friendly staff member and shown to our seats. We brought some wine with us and they were quick to give us a wine stand with a ice bucket, which I thought was a nice touch. The food was beautiful again and the service was great!

The only things that could be improved is the music is too quiet and also it would be nice if they placed some sort of Thai music to make the experience feel more real.

But I would highly recommend this place if your looking for a causal night out for dinner. Also a great place for BYOs as it's such a great location and nice food!

Thanks again Bangkok Restaurant we will be back. Keep up the great work!
Charlie
The food wasn't that tasty. It was alright but no where near as good compared to other thai restaurants that we've been to. but however our starter which was a tom yum soup was quite tasty. i ordered a pad thai for our main and i must say it was horrible as i've tasted better in my takeaway! The worst was desert which was just not edible (we ordered some sago desert and a dooriyan desert). I also agree with Theresa because the waitress could not understand English very well and she simply said "yes" very quietly to everything we asked. Thank goodness we did not have to deal with a situation like Theresa otherwise it would have been impossible to communicate with her. Overall i think This place however needs to seriously improve!!

I purchased a deal voucher for dinner for two which my friends used whilst myself and another friend of our's purchased our meals directly from the complete menu. All went well at first upon arrival and having made sure that we had understood the meals on offer to be considered using the coupon. One of my friends ordered her appetizer and main course but then also wanted a salad upon which she asked the waiter, if the salad was also included and could be ordered using the coupon. The waiter replied yes, so she ordered the salad as well. When we arrived to pay, we were told that the salad was really another main dish and so therefore it could not be included as part of the coupon deal. In this case, the waiter did not explain himself to us properly in the first instance when asked, that the salad is really another main dish and so therefore, it could not be included and purchased using the coupon. We spent a good 10 minutes or so discussing this with the waiter who unrelentingly and was very stubborn, arguing that he said yes, the salad could be bought using a coupon but in our case, my friend ordered two mains so therefore, the salad was an additional main which we have to pay for in full. This was very unprofessional and outrageous behavior from a person who is at the frontline of customer service. He should have attempted from the very first start to make us, the customers, feel happy and had done something to diffuse the situation and resolve the problem so we would want to visit their restaurant again. He did give us a refund back for the salad but it was too late by then, to put it simply he had killed our very enjoyable evening. Needless to say we will never go back to this place again and we will tell people not to go there as well. I ordered a beef stir fry and the beef smelled horrible, we thought that perhaps the odor was from a herb they used. The waitress did not understand English very well and sometimes gave us the wrong information then we would have to consult with the waiter again. The food was not that great in comparison to other Thai restaurants we had been to before so I think the meals were bit expensive considering that they didn't taste that great. The only positive thing about our evening was that the decor was nice. Oh and we weren't even told that the rice would cost us so every helping of rice cost $2.50
Joey Penn
Our night started off well with the Appetizers after a long explanation of what we wanted due to a lack of understanding with the spoken English of both waiters. There were 4 of us and 2 used a coupon. To make a long story short, I would never go to this place again, over charged my friend for her meal and the salad was disgusting which we were told was a main $18.50 when it was $10 on the menu. They need someone with good English and puts the customer first!! Pathetic every scoop of rice gets charged onto your account.
Stu
This has to be one of the worst Thai restaurants we have been to. I gave one star, because of the location and building. We ordered a chicken and a pork dish - the chicken must have been left in the freezer for a while - it smelled really bad. The taste on both meals was bland as best, and we had to ask for extra chilly sauce as one of the orders we had asked for was spicy but what arrived at the table was anything but!!!
The guy behind the bar (I am assuming is the owner) kept talking really loud to his staff and it was not pleasant at all. This is our second visit here and no improvement from the last time and probably will be our last time.
Even we told the waiter about the food, and I said I will pay full price but was just expecting some acknowledgement that the food could be better. No apologies and no acknowledgement. Pity looking at the decor with all the spices and the food is not even close to what it should be. Just wondering if the chef here would cook the same food for his family if he/she was at home.

Bangkok is one of my go-to-places for Thai in the CBD. Since 2010, I have been many times for special occasions and just to get a quick lunch. I prefer to go for lunch, but that is because their lunch specials are such great value: 1 entree and 1 main for $15! The food is delicious and portion size very generous when compared to other places. My favourites are the pad thai, pineapple rice, and Thai green curry.

The service has been excellent every time I have been. The decor is nice and you can get a good view of Queen St or Wellesley St from most tables.
Chris
Best Deal Out There!

My fiancee and I used an online voucher and, following a couple of bad experiences at other restaurants with the vouchers, we weren't expecting much here. It seems that these vouchers are mostly just used to get people in the door, then you're offered a pathetic set portion and expected to fork out more cash to actually get fed. But we were pleasantly surprised that this wasn't the case at Bangkok!

No set menu here (although, there is that option if you would like it). We were free to choose any entree, main and drink we liked! This was accompanied by our choice of rice and a complimentary dessert. The portions were generous and the food quality very good. My red curry, in particular, was delicious.

The restaurant is tastefully decorated and quite spacious. We found the staff to be polite and efficient, and we have no hesitation in recommending this place to others - especially if you get hold of one of the super-value deals we got (it must have been about a 75% discount on the menu price!).

Thanks for a nice evening!
Kelvin Hilton
This place could do so much better.
The venue would have you believe that its up market. however the service is terrible.
The food is no where near the high standards that I usually enjoy at Auckland's great Thai restaurants.
Very disappointed
Sharon
Went for dinner Sunday night. Pretty quiet, so I hope other nights are a bit busier for them. We had no problem with the service or the ambiance. Remembering that it was an old pub I dont think they have done too bad with making it into a restaurant. The staff were all very pleasant and the food was good. Not the best we have had but it was still very enjoyable. The way the pad thai was presented was quite unique. Only gripe would be portions were a bit light for the price, but hey you are in Queen ST so I guess their rents are high. Overall a nice way to end the week, thank you.
Stephen
This place was horrible. They are pretty slow on service, the food took just under an hour to be brought out (there were 10 other people at the restaurant at the time) and the waiter and waitress kept on confusing our orders. The ambiance was nice but not really "Thai".

When paying the bill there was a lot of confusion between staff. They tried to charge one of us $30 for the $10.50 soup got the staff got quite aggressive when we refused and said that was wrong. There was also confusion in regards to the corkage price which was also frustrating.

A very unpleasant experience for a birthday dinner. Thought it was just a bad night for the staff perhaps but after seeing other reviews it could be like this all the time... Would highly recommend anyone not to go there!
Haden Hansen
Went here tonight for dinner. Was not impressed at all. Ordered Deep fried larb which came out as a tiny portion, five two dollar coin sized pieces of meat. Additionally, the service was rude and abrupt but unfortunately, not efficient in the slightest. Would not go back, especially for the prices they charge,

I went here for a friends birthday dinner and I have to say it was pretty disappointing. We got there at 7pm and the mains weren't served until just after 8.30pm.
We had the chicken satay for an appetizer and whilst the chicken was cooked really well the satay sauce was very weak and I barely noticed it was there.
I had the yellow curry for my main and it tasted like coconut milk mixed with water. The potatoes were barely cooked as well. I couldn't eat my curry with my rice because the rice stole all the curry flavour.
Two out of the three waiters were very rude and one would sigh loudly because he couldn't tell us the name of the dish that came out of the kitchen and referred to it by its number only so because we did not realise which number was what dish he got frustrated at us.
The prices were also a lot different than indicated on this site. My curry dish was $22.50 not $17.50 as this site would tell you.
All in all I have to say I have had better Thai in places that are at least half the price, and I have never left feeling still hungry like I did tonight.
Jaynie Ball
Loved it. Great ambience, fantastic food and what a wonderful central location. We had just seen a show and all the fast food joints were packed and I was on crutches. The food was great, the prices normal for Thai and the service impeccable. And we were there awhile and never got that hassled feeling that we were taking too long. A+++
Ryan Ashton
Went there before the comedy show at the Civic and it was an experience... bit slow on service, but funny as hell and delicious food... so were going back now before another show and it's across the road from the civic, which is perfect and corkage is free, so what more could you ask for!

We went again as it is so close to the Civic and ordered entrees and mains and were asked "Do you want it all together?" to which we said "No thanks, entrees first, then mains" and we got mains first and had to tell them we had entrees still to come - all rather funny, food was amazing again and the laughter and smiles all the way through more than made up for the reverse order!!
Doug
The service is not good and the food was terrible. We ended up leaving hungry from the restaurant and eating Wendy's burger instead. Also the food is very expensive. Ambience's is nice, but i did not go to see the ambiance I was intending to eat some Thai food. I would say the food court food is far better than this restaurant. Our anniversary dinner was a disaster.
Winehouse
Was very disappointed in the service, meals were not being brought out together, but quite a while after others. They messed up a lot of our party's orders and charged 7 dollar corkage per bottle, but had a sign saying free corkage, conditions apply, no conditions were stated. There was no atmosphere or key touches that customers like, eg, mints for after dinner, no background music, no welcome from staff.
The food was OK, but am sure there are much better Thai places out there in the city. Much preferred it as The London Bar.
Lillian
Good service and tasty food. A little bit expensive, but ok for a town location. Good serving size. Enjoyed the red spicy curry, but thought the fish cake entrée was average. Yummy cocktails.
Jane Ross
Had a few meals from the place now. Great food much tastier than other Thai restaurants in the city. Decent prices too and staff very nice and efficient.

Bought a Groupon deal and tried this place today. The restaurant is very beautiful and the food was equally impressive! We were very impressed with the portions and the amount of meat in each main dish. A very happy customer who will surely return!
