Review Pane & Vino - Auckland

Benedict Uy
Pane and Vino is located in the old church on Williamson Avenue. The place is quite small but they also do have an upstairs area. We were able to get a table here without a booking, which was lucky because they packed out later that night. Their menu covers a wide range of Italian items, particularly pasta and pizza. We grabbed an arancini (same as 6 small risotto balls) to share and they were quite crispy and tasty. We then had the melanzana and ravioli ai funghi as mains. The melanzana was layers of eggplant and cheese in a tomato sauce, reminiscent of lasagne. It was quite nice but there wasn't too much of an eggplant flavour in it. The ravioli was amazing since everything tasted like mushrooms. The pasta had a nice bit and the filling was mushrooms. Quite tasty and really nice. It was a cosy Italian restaurant with tasty food.

Brilliant little place. Great service and food. We will be back.

Cozy interior but noisy. The man who looks like the owner is kind and busy staff. Pasta and pizza are all delicious. I really enjoyed the meal. Especially, Ragu is the best!

Delicious food, well presented, tasty. Good selection of beverage. Great service, friendly staff. Pane e Vino is prepared to accommodate special diets. Fresh salads, good quality cheese. Giorgio, manager, is very polite and ready to assist you. Clean premises. Clean bathroom.

Our waiter was friendly and eccentric and the food was delicious! The atmosphere was cosy and warm. Had an unfortunate seat that put me eye level with the headlights of all the cars at the intersection but a fantastic experience regardless :-)

This little Italian restaurant is great! Delicious food, super accommodating for allergies, Amy our waitress was fantastic!

Nice food in an amazingly built place. Staff is super friendly. Calamari and Garlic bread made up an awesome starter followed by chicken parmesan pasta. I m not a great fan of pasta but i enjoyed it a lot.

Delicious meal from start to finish. The gnocchi was to die for I haven't gotten it out of my head since and can't wait to go back for more. The sauces were clearly home made and couldn't fault a single bite starter, main or dessert. Our waitress was very nice and attentive despite also looking after a table of 20ish people at the same time

Yummy garlic prawn entree - generous enough to keep 2 of us satisfied! The fish dish with the rocket and balsamic vinaigrette was also yummy! The only down side was the tables were a bit crammed together and it was very noisy, with no soft furnishings to mute the sound, but we will be back for the food 😊
Gavin Gribben
Great venue for a group dinner, but also a quiet night out earler in the week. Tasty meal and good Italian wines.

Absolutely glorious tiramisu and the frutti de mare linguine was divine. All the seafood was cooked well and the pasta was well seasoned with a flavoursome sauce. It’s the second time we’ve been there and we will be back!

Found this place at the beginning of the year when I came with my best friend and have come back 4 times since. Such beautiful food always go for the gnocchi pancetta it is so divine. The host and staff are lovely and always ensure that we have enjoyed our meal. Smaller portions for the pasta but it is so filling! Their bruschetta was the first time I ever enjoyed eating tomato like that. Will keep coming back!

Celebrated NYE at Pane e Vino. An already awesome, character old fire station has been transformed into an Italian food heaven. We had a calamari to share. It was crunchy on the outside and fresh and yummy in the inside. It was light and non greasy. A must have as starter. Their pasta are so good. Linguini da Marie was sensational with very fresh and deliciously cooked prawns. Spinach Chicken bake paste was out of this world. Staff was friendly and welcoming. Highly recommended. Can’t wait to go back to try out different dishes. Top place!

Amazing atmosphere it really felt like you were transported to italy. Waiters were friendly and attentive. I got the special of handmade pasta which was delicious. Would highly recommend the ravioli on the menu could really taste the truffle flavour. Pasta was cooked perfectly. Got some tiramisu and profiteroles for dessert. Loved the tiramisu! Would definitely come back here again and there is more seating upstairs.
Oksana Koptelova
It’s a nice and cozy place. Pasta was really good, pizza was amazing, but huge minus for profiteroles: they were microwaved frozen ones from the supermarket, half with hot filling half with nearly frozen.

Had a delicious seafood meal last night .. after spending a long time choosing, with many options the seafood was so fresh, the most tender calamari I've ever eaten, lovely prawns, tender mussels & tasty snapper .. The Pesce Rock was amazing too ... & for a finale we had Tiramisu to die for!! Still dreaming of it this morning! .. Thank you so much for your friendly & helpful service too, we did take a long time choosing along with asking lots if questions.

Ordered food from here and I’d still get better tasting food with a two min microwave meal! Dry, tasteless and an absolute shame to Italian cuisine. Yuck!! No one wants to eat lasagna that taste like baby food don’t recommend.
Vanessa Ponzoni
Worse Italian restaurant in the whole NZ. Ordered a delivery, spent more than NZ$70 and they delivered something like a kids meal size and tasteless, bruschetta was dry no filling, pasta overcooked, like 3 spoon fulls then gone, and no taste at all, lasagna was a very tiny piece and looked like dog food. Thats a shame, bcs Italian food is very yummy. Please close this place down!!!! And I want my money back!!!!!!

There were 16 of us celebrating family gathering. We loved the atmosphere and food was just fabulous! The restaurant was packed and yes it was noisy but just because people were having fun and enjoying themselves. The staff was great as well! They played Italian songs for us and even danced with us! Thank you, you made us feel a little bit Italian too! ;)

Very disappointed. The pizza was good but the rest of our dishes (pasta, melanzane) was very bad. The melanzane tasted like fried flour and was topped with canned tomato sauce. When we politely gave our feedback to the waiter, he shrugged his shoulders and replied: ''I don't care. I just work here." and left. What kind of service is that? We are never going back.
Rida Ashby
Taste good and decent portion for lunch. I didn't expect much for $10 but it was fantastic. I took itatian cooking class once. So, I know how much hard work the chef has been through to serve customers. Thanks and I will be back!

A little Italy in NZ. Very authentic food. Great staff. Very special. Best pizza in the southern hemisphere.

Those calzones though!!!! The steak was amazing and the ravioli to die for. Pretty top notch Italian in Auckland

I keep returning and for good reason. Great food. Fabulous staff. Reminds me of all the times I spent in Italy. Bellissimo xx

That's for delivery: the pizza arrived to my place cold (I am not even 10 min away) and I had to pay $15 for the delivery!!! More expensive than the pizza. Guess where I am not getting food from anymore?

Booked for my daughters graduation dinner the waiter said he did not have a booking then the owner came and said yes he did have it and ushered us outside on tiny deck and started to push 2 tiny tables together, obviously he did not write down booking and there was no way we could fit on those tables. We said no that was not suitable and he insisted it was. We left, ruined our evening, have been there before food average thought we would give it another go. Never ever again. Disaster!

Ho comprato 3 pizze, tutte è tre scondite, ed un po crude!!

As always a fun night, great food, great staff..bellisimo!!!!

Great atmosphere, food & BYO.. can't go wrong. Grazie!

so reasonably priced and the food and staff were absolutely amazing. Thanks so much! Will definitely be back here soon!

Great food and great service! I would definately go back.

The food is great and so is the service. Can't wait to go back for more.

An actual joke. Do not come here if you are a large group because they will do their best at making sure they can charge you extra. The food is BAD and it’s $40 PP to dine here as a group. I would’ve been OK with my experience if the food was nice but what I received is what I could whip up at home easily. Also, do not serve your customers food that is not on the menu. E.g rocket instead of basil for the caprese salad. The waiter could have informed us before we ordered this. If I knew I was ordering three slices of tomato, with thin slices of mozzarella topped with rocket, I would not have chosen this option.

Service = 2.5/5; Taste = 4/5; Value for money = 4/5; Menu Options = 5/5; Vibe = 4/5; Hubby rating = 4/5.
Pane e Vino takes me back to Italy with it’s traditional flavours, old school vibe, and the “Ciao Bella” on arrival. The quaint vibe makes it perfect for a date night.
For my full review, visit honestfoodiereview.com or @honest_foodie_nz

A group of us came here for a friends birthday dinner on Saturday night. We opted for BYO and all brought along a bottle of wine. Upon arrival we there was a confusion on their policy and half of our bottles of wine were aggressively snatched off the table and we were told one bottle of wine were to be shared between two people.

Despite the low level of hospitality we received, we tried to make the most of the evening in hope not to put a damper on the birthday celebrations. Toward the end of our dining experience, I asked if we could sing happy birthday to the birthday girl. The request was met with a desert and a candle along with a birthday song. It was only right before leaving the restaurant they generously gave back our wine and then charged us for $10 corkage for all the bottles of wine.

As we were leaving we were told that the bill has not been cleared, to my surprise they had charged $14 for the desert. There would be no problem with this if the additional cost was clarified when making the request, we would have still gotten it! BUT you need to make these things clear.

I made no fuss when paying, but on the way out made it clear to the owner that we were very unsatisfied and would be making a review the next day. Instead of apologising for all the miscommunication and confusion, I got laughed at and called ridiculous.
Meals are pretty small and quite pricy for what you get. Overall, food was average but not worth the price
Irena
Unfortunately food was under seasoned and moreover pizza that we’ve ordered was burned. However for the price you can’t complain much. Can’t comment on customer service, as we just ordered take away. For the area(Ponsonby) price reflects quality. Pizza and pasta tasted quite plain and way to fatty. It was not a bad experience. If chef may relook seasoning and amount of cream/cheese in the dishes, I believe the place can do better. Nice location and ambience, would be great to see place improve and come for dine in, as it has a very good potential.

My all time favourite restaurant! Will continue to keep going back for their carbonara ❤️

Amazing experience every time! Authentic food, lovely dinning area and the staff make the experience even better! Such warm, welcoming people!
You guys have nailed it when it comes to a great dinning experience.
Will continue to come here and introduce this place to my friends. Thank you Pane & Vino!

Found this gem by accident! Good pizza🍕 , but I understand that gnocchi is a very hard dish, I would have enjoyed even more if the proportion was bigger, more ingredients in the sauce, and cooked longer for a even more spongy texture. There are very few places that gets gnocchi right. Otherwise the pizza was great and I would definitely return and try out the other pasta.
Chan Can Eat
The BEST pizza in town! Seriously! Every variety I’ve tried has been absolutely drool worthy. I love the outdoor dining, both upstairs and even on the footpath. The fact you can BYO is also amazing
This place is perfect for both summer and winter dining. And did I mention their pizza is the BEST!
I love the Italian hospitality here too. Wish I lived closer so I could visit more often!
Highly, highly recommend !
SpoonMe
Came here for a BYO dinner on a Saturday night.
It was just okay, nothing that amazed me and the portion sizes were small. Knowing so many other better Italian places I won’t be back here in a hurry.
If I had to come here again I guess the pizza was better than the pasta I had so I’d probably get that.
But overall it wasn’t bad but I won’t be back.

I must say I wasn't sure what to expect given the mix of reviews for Pane e Vino but wow, I was pleasantly surprised. Service was great, food was delicious and it was very affordable. I would definitely recommend.

Best spaghetti cabonara I’ve tasted to date in Auckland. Also had the calamari (which was delish), lots of red wine and finished the night with a limoncello. Great service, Great atmosphere. Highly recommend.

First came here with a friend in 2012, enjoyed the bruschetta and pizzas so yummy. If you’re looking for a true Italian styles, this is the place to be.

We ordered Uber eats. The meals did not match up to the descriptions and one was missing.

Pizza bread was simply garlic bread with hardly any garlic. Nothing like the description.

Mushroom ravioli was tasteless and watery.

The Panna Cotta wasn’t even in the bag.

We spoke with the manager about sorting it out and he didn’t care one bit. He told us to take it up with Uber eats.

We have eaten here on many occasions and held multiple work events at pane e vino, sometimes with over 20 people. Never again. I will avoid this place going forward and actively persuade anyone else to do the same.

Their website says they can make any of their pizzas vegan. My friend also called them to make sure they could cater to vegans. They said they could and apparently told her they also had vegan cheese. She was pretty keen to make sure it was somewhere I could eat. However, when I got there, they told me I'd have to have one of the two vegetarian pizzas without cheese. They also had a set menu down, and told me that even though I couldn't really eat anything from the set menu, I would still have to pay the $40 for the set menu. They then checked with the manager to see what they could do - there was literally juts the one choice for me. Half an hour later, two other people turned up and ordered - from the regular menu - and didn't have to pay for the set menu, because it was too late to order from it. I was SO annoyed that I was being forced to pay $40 for a pizza without cheese. I thought it was a shame they couldn't have recognised that maybe it wasn't worth the full set menu price for someone who couldn't eat any of it, after having assured us that there would be vegan options. I was also disappointed, because they clearly had the option of letting other people order from the regular menu. I obviously won't be going back, but I will also be telling other people about my experience here.

Delicious Italian!!! The pasta is so fresh and tasty. The ravioli is a favourite. Quirky little place that is great for a BYO but if you’re not looking to have a loud one ask to sit outside as it does get hectic. The meals are quite small so get a pizza bread or another starter to be safe.

I’ve been here numerous times for dinner with friends. Staff always have gone above and beyond and my goodness - the food is sensational. I’m really confused about the bad reviews. Personally I’ve only had wonderful experiences here and I literally find myself daydreaming about the food from time to time.
Let's Eat!
Come here for lunch every so often and usually leave quite satisfied. Lunch prices are reasonable and portion sizes are good. Have never been here for dinner which could be the cause of the negative reviews.

Went here for a birthday party with a big group. We pretty much took over half the shop. We were looked after very well considering most of us were well on the way to being drunk. The food was delicious, good portion size and the staff were very patient and accommodating. Also loved the Italian accent and mannerisms, that topped off the whole experience. Thanks so much team! Looking forward to the next visit, till then onwards and upwards.

In all honesty I'm giving a two because the food was excellent however ever everything else needed work especially the customer service.
Never have I been to a restaurant with some many rules and policies I couldn't relax.
I had rung and booked for a table for two but one friend decided to come a long as well. Setting up a table for three was a completely nightmare but I'll applaud the staff for getting it done eventually. This is a BYO retuarant with a lovely setting however you're only allowed to have 1 bottle per person (which is fair) but you need to order a main? Even though it just says that you need to order with a meal not a main out server was adminent about it but finally let it go. It was probably the most weirdest dining experience I've had and everything felt "difficult".
Anyway to end of a good note. Some of the staff were lovely. The food was great and the restaurant was cosy.

It used to be a very nice restaurant, been here a few times. However $35 for a set menu (which we were forced to get) is very expensive for what it is. Also, we were all required to purchase the set menu (i.e could not share a plate) which made the night very expensive.

My partner and I came along for dinner and were both highly impressed with the quality of the food. We shared a pizza and a pasta and both were superb. Pizza was fresh, not too heavy and not lost under a pile of too many toppings. The pasta was perfectly cooked and highly flavoursome. Excellent service and the meals came out in a timely manner. Tables for two are very close to neighbouring diners so private conversation isn’t really possible (we were treated to someone’s insurance broker meeting for the duration of our meal) however they are limited on space in the front dining room so this is to be expected. The dining room was also a bit chilly so I left my jacket on. Overall we would definitely come back for the great food!
Sez U
Went there with a large group of people so we had a set menu for $35.
The entree was a caprese salad which consisted of 3 small tomatoes, 1/2 lettuce leaf and 3 bits of cheese.
My main course was the baked snapper. Never have I ever had a meal so bland! I’m guessing it was approx 100g of snapper if that.. 7 olives and a few diced tomatoes. I honestly don’t think there was any other ingredient in that dish? Even if I was on a strict diet I would have ate more than that! I ended up having to fill up on plain bread to make myself feel full (I’m not even a big eater). Very disappointed with the portion size for the”main” for that price.
Will not be returning or recommending.

Came here for an engagement with a party of about 20 - 25(kitchens worst nightmare, but it is what it is) so big thank you for actually being able to cater for a large group! the table service was good but I did clock some dirty cutlery/cups which is always a bit sad. I love their set menu options which keeps nights out for big groups pain free. But the caprese salad tho!? it's literally 3 ingredients - a simple flavour profile but instead of basil it was spring mix and Italy doesn't deserve to be done like that. What was was lacking in quality of food however was made up in the case that I felt cosy in a tight knit dining room full of friendly faces so ty!

Where to start. We ended up being a group of 12, booked for 14 yet we arrive unable to seat everyone as the table was set for 8. Than they offer us seperate tables. No thank you, this is a birthday celebration and we’re not going to split ourselves up because you couldn’t prepare yourselves after we booked several days in advance. Completely unacceptable. The service across the entire night was terrible. I don’t know how many times we requested things only to be ignored. There wasn’t even enough cutlery on the table! The food was well below par and the prices, my god! You’d think from looking at the menu followed by the steep number beside it you would actually receive some good food. No no, don’t kid yourself. If your looking for some genuine Italian, do not come here. We ordered a variety of items off the menu. The pizza was average - hardly any toppings. No salt and pepper on the table and all of the food was under seasoned. The pasta was the same, no flavour, hardly any meat, my partner had to ask for chilli flakes and salt and pepper before being able to proceed to eat her meal. We all ended up being able to try a bit of everyone’s food because no one was finishing their meals. I tried the chicken cannelloni - over cooked, under seasoned - no flavour accept for the excess of cheese which basically followed thru across the table. The beef cannelloni was probably worse. To top it all off at the end of the night when it came to paying the bill they also tried throwing in 3 extra corkage fees. Unbelievable!

Our timing could have added to the result of this review showing up an hour before closing. Food wasn’t that great and portion size not matching the price. Service of the staff ok. Despite an almost full house, overall a lot to improve on.
Divzna
Portion sizes were tiny for 3 of the 4 dishes we ordered and the pasta sauce was very watery for the spaghetti dish. Couldnt taste any flavors and had to add extra salt and chillies for taste. Atmosphere was good but food could have been better
Rebecca McEntee
We ordered takeaways and this is possibly the worst pasta that I have EVER had! The bruschetta was even worse! The pasta sauce was just cream and was thrown together. I recommend not going to this restaurant as you will be very disappointed.
Emma W
We dined as a group of five on a weeknight as it was the first restaurant we walked past. We ordered three pizzas, a pasta and a main.

Two of the pizzas were the same type but came out looking completely different. The pasta sauce was watery and even if that was intended the only flavour I could taste was garlic. Pasta with a watery garlic sauce is not very appealing. The main dish was made entree size as they had run out of ingredients.

The restaurant has a really nice warm atmosphere and the service was good but I found the food disappointing.
Oones Connor
Cute resturant. Authentic Italian great atmosphere. The menu is extensive and very well priced. Beauitful brucetta gorgeous pasta. Recommend for an intimate dinner or a small group.
Nick
Mediocre experience. The staff seemed checked out, when they bought out the wrong mains they didn't really apologise I had to wait for my wife's to be replaced while mine went cold. The seafood (calamari in particular) is very rubbery and tasteless, not very fresh. The special dish (ravioli) was nice but other than that very underwhelming and won't be returning.
Sophie Ravlich
Delicious food and great service, but ravioli serving size is small (should be at least 1.5 x bigger) - especially compared be to the calzones which can nearly feed two. This is probably the only place where I would order an entree, main and dessert if ordering pasta.
Miss H
Have been here a couple of times for lunch, and have always had a good experience here.
The second visit I had a Pugliese pizza and a Ravioli ai funghi fresh pasta. (See photos)

Food 4/5
Both visits I really enjoyed the pastas! I think the pastas are much better than the pizzas. The sauces are really rich and creamy which I thoroughly enjoyed. The ravioli was really nice! The pugliese pizza I had on my second visit was okay- not that nice though. It wasn't loaded with toppings and was a bit dry too. But as I had it off the lunch menu which the price is much cheaper than the dinner menu, I wasn't too bothered with it. But if I got the same pizza for the full price off the dinner menu, I would have probably been very disappointed.

Service 5/5
The wait staff were always very friendly. On my last visit my friend and I had trouble deciding on what to eat, and the waitress was very friendly and was keen to help us out.

Ambience 4/5
The tables inside seemed like it would be a good place to have dinner!

I would probably be back for lunch because of the good price and good pastas!

As with the other comments on here, I ordered from here via the uber app to try it for the first time. Food delivered had more oil than pasta sauce (I got the gnocchi with zucchini and prawns), the gnocchi wasn't very firm and was a bit soggy compared to gnocchi I've ordered from a chain cafe. The prawns were a little over done and the zucchini wasn't that great either and am sure I could cook better myself. On top of that, the portion sizes aren't worth the cost either. $21 for approx 1/3 of a container really is a bit of a rip off. Won't be ordering from here again anytime soon.....
Ben Mcguinness-Ngatai
At a suggestion me and a gaggle of friends decided to go for a BYO equaling an excursion to Pane & Vino. Overall food, service and ambiance were fair. While no complaints (aside from a dodgy looking fork) the food was good but could have had more guts and flavour. The canneloni con pollo, needed a stronger cheese or seasoning and the veal came with a side salad (I found odd) but the bread was nice. The polenta starter which I picked at won as it had a blue cheese with it. We all enjoyed but could have had a bit more flavour to the dishes - food envy of my mate who chose the vegetarian ravioli though which she enjoyed. Staff were friendly, even with two large groups in and while not "rustic" was homely & warm, especially as it was freezing outside. Would go again, even if for a BYO it's probably on the pricier side - but reasonable corkage (and read menu before choosing your BYO wine!)
Steve
The staff were friendly and polite enough. I ordered prawns for starter and pizza for main. The prawns was a small bowl of prawns and a slice of lemon, not very imaginative. The pizza was large. The cheese was nice but it was quite greasy with oil just dripping off it. I can make better pizza at home. The people on my table who ordered pasta all left 80% of it. The people who ordered steak looked like a kids portion. The bread for the table was dry with little effort put into it. We had pizza breads which were $14 each.

It was very loud inside and the acoustics were terrible, I have good hearing but I could hardly hear the person next to me because of all the chatter.

All in all I won't be going back. But the place was packed so maybe some people do enjoy it.
Himani Shah
Good food and good service. I had the vegetarian linguine and hubby had the vegetarian ravioli.... Hubby thought the ravioli was too cheesy and I thought the linguine had too much tomato sauce so we swapped and all was well.

Place was packed and very popular. Not good for first dates though - can't really hear over all the noise. But in all honesty, the food makes up for it.
Ellie Sheehan
I got the takeaway Ravioli ai funghi, the ravioli was tasty, but the portion size for $21, it's half empty! I was still hungry at the end!
Won't be rushing back for those prices!
Chanel Sharp
Excellent service. Thoroughly enjoyed the mushroom linguine and bruschetta. Lovely atmosphere and the cost is reasonable + worth every cent!

Absolutely worst experience I have had in a restaurant to date. We ordered takeaway carbonara, once home we found the pasta was extremely dry with no sauce and had scrambled egg throughout - whether this was because the egg was folded through when the pasta was too hot or whatever. The problem wasn't that the food wasn't that great, it was the staffs response when we complained. We were told that we wrong, entitled to our wrong opinion and that no one had ever complained about the food here (which seems to be somewhat untrue when you read the dreadful google reviews this restaurant has) and that it was our own fault for getting the meal takeaway - we then suggested they should not offer the takeaway option if their food is not up to standard when not eaten at the restaurant? We were made to feel like we weren't allowed to voice issues with what wasn't a cheap meal. I would absolutely never return here and wouldn't recommend to anyone, especially after the worst customer service I have ever encountered. Such a pity, as it is in the best location and could be a real success.
Roni Ramone
I came here for my friends BYO dinner - i was the first to arrive and I was waiting for about ten/fifteen minutes, and during that time no one offered me any water or anything, it was only when the first guest arrived after I'd been alone for all that time was I offered anything. Then as the rest of our party arrived took a really long time for any orders to be made. Then they gave us flat sparkling water which we did not ask for but no doubt paid for. Also if you're a vegetarian you should pick one vegetable you like and order based on that, becuase there are no options which have mix, the veggie pizzas and pastas offer mushrooms and one other vegetable and that's it basically. The fact that they don't have wine glasses is ridiculous, considering this place has been there for so many year. The food was good, but the waiters messed up our bill and me and the birthday girl, who were the last to pay, were left when over half of the bill which should have been split 8 ways. I don't know what happened but this was appalling and I do not want to return to this place.

This hidden byo gem is tucked behind the bustling streets of Ponsonby. Well known for being the spot for weekend group gatherings, feasting on their Italian offerings and that bottle of vino you hadn't touched since the last wine and cheese night at the flat.
The restaurant is cosy, and how couldn't it be. Of what looks like an old ponsonby home now a house to locals in search of Italian comfort food.

With a bottle in hand ready for good vibes and food we came in on a quiet Monday. As the weekend crowd was absent we were able to converse in peace.

Not wanting to order the usual linguini pasta or margarita pizza I'm guilty of devouring when placed in Italian restaurants, I thought the ripieno would be a beautiful challenge for the rumbling stomach of mine.

Service was friendly and Italian in its manner. My folded over pizza made the table jealous and made me proud for having the best dish on the table.

I've had the fair share of Italian restaurants and pane e vino is definitely on the higher end of my favourites.

Great ambience and authentic italian food. However, portion size was a bit small and didn't feel worth the price. The tiramisu is a must have....absolutely delicious!
Vitale Eti
We were lucky enough to find a parking right outside this cute little restaurant on a rainy, windy night and had great company for dinner. Between the 7 of us we ordered the antipasto topica (selected cured meats), w. a selection of breads and my husband and I ordered the Linguine alla Genovese (chicken in pesto creamy sauce on linguine) and the linguine alla campagnola (chicken in a creamy tomato sauce on linguine). With a Peroni and coke.

Both dishes were hot and tasty. Staff nice and friendly and service speedy.
Rebecca MacDonald
This great cheap and cheerful but authentic Italian had something for everyone. It's byo so great for groups and the food is amazing. We had the garlic and olive oil bruschetta and buffalo mozzarella, tomato and basil bruschetta to share to start. Then I had the lasagna as a main. I love lasagna but hardly ever make it at home because it's quite intensive so love ordering it when out and this didn't disappoint!
Anagha
While the food was tasty and that is the most important part, I felt the restaurant was cluttered and too noisy. Each course was small portioned which meant no one got overly full and enough space for desert! (I recommend the tiramisu!!) if you're looking for a wooden vintage vibe then pane and vino is for you. One complaint I did have were the lack of wine glasses (there were none) but the friendly staff and service did take my attention away from the loud and cluttered atmosphere.
Angelique
We had our wedding lunch here and I have to say, the food, the service, the atmosphere...EVERYTHING, was just AMAZING...we wanted something that wasn't too formal and this was it, we were able to BYO enough wine for everyone which really reduced the cost and everybody raved non-stop about how great the food was, will forever love this place :-)
Josh
No matter how busy these guys are the sevice is always fantastic. Not to mention the food! Same high quality every time, most delicious eye fillet. Menu is quite large, this simply means you can go many times and never have the same thing and still be impressed! Highly recommend this place for dine in or taking a pizza home! It's a great experience!

We came here as a big party of about 20 people. They set us up down the back of the restaurant with a small outdoor area. They were very accommodating to a very large and rowdy group.

This place is BYO which makes the perfect venue before hitting the town. We had a shared birthday cake and brought a cake with us. The staff sung us happy birthday in Italian which was a nice surprise.

The menu is very large so it takes a bit of time to decide what we wanted. Most people went for the pizzas and I got the snapper with anchovies. This place is very authentic and I would love to come back to try the pastas
Marina
Yummy Snapper ! BYO and an awesome happy vibe on Friday and saturday nights with all the BYO party goers. The Tiramisu is a nice one too! Limoncello is great. No red wine glasses only normally glasses are used. Portion size of the fish is on the smaller size but very nice!

A quaint restaurant down to the very core. Came here with a tonne of people for a work do. They put us in the back room which fot everyone in nicely. The food was fantastic. I had the pizza and it was pretty close to the ones I had in Napoli. The waiters were Italian and were crackup. Typical Italian hospitality. Big grandiose arms movements and a vocal speed that would shame a commentator at the races. they even brought in a cake for my italian friend's birthday. The manager on duty probably went over the line though. He was in good spirits during service but afterwards he was extremely shitty and was rude to a fair few people.

A real Italian Trattoria in the heart of Ponsonby.. superb! No need to travel to Italy now for the real deal :-) Italian guys in the kitchen (not arguing but that would've added more flavour) and artefacts on the walls give it that authentic feel. The lunch menu was extensive, and everything that was served came out quickly and looked good. My gnocchi tasted great. One of the fellow diners had to send her risotto balls back but they were quickly refreshed and came back even better. Plenty of space for big groups, this is a bit out of the way, but lots of charm for even the most jaded of amateur diners...

Good pizza. Great wine. Cracks me up that the specials board was items taken from the menu at the same price or more. The location makes this place.
MommyYummy
I get it .. is a trattoria a informal place where people go to eat service is casua etc. But if the place is owned by Italian you expect the flavours and the recipes represent the good of the Italian cuisine. The service is authentic Italian style they were attentive 😊👍 My feedback comes to my experience with the food. Lasagna : The Garlic covered all the flavours of my dish.. 😕 as well for the pasta that my partner ate ( carbonara ) 😒 Very oily and my lasagna very saggy. We expected a balance experience between food and service but wasn't 😞 Sometimes popular restaurants start losing the interest for quality when achieving popularity I hope this is not the case as I really think Italian Food should be good coming from a Italian. ( NoT a rule) Anyway is a family friendly place and there are good space for big group's and for baby trolleys in case you want to go with your little one. Ciao!

I had dinner last weekend at Pane e Vino and the overall experience wasn't great. The place was very busy and it seemed very popular, but I guess we maybe were unlucky.

My partner and I made a booking in advance and when we arrive we had to wait for about 15 minutes in the parking lot until we could get a table. Once we got the table, this one was actually behind the main door, yes, outside, and every 5 to 10 seconds I had people opening the door behind me, a few times slamming it on my back.

Service was all right, but we got the feeling the waiter just wanted us gone as fast as he could get us out of there, we don't know if it was to turn the table faster or just because he had a stressing day and he wanted some peace. The restaurant seemed cozy and warmer inside, I guess I can't say since our table only had views of the parking.

I didn't love the food. I had the seafood pasta with white wine sauce and I found the sauce watery and not as flavourful I could expect. Normally I don't like to add parmesan on my pasta, but I had to do it this time to give it some flavour. The pasta was cooked perfectly, something had to be done right.
My parter had the gnocchi special and she thought it was ok, but her comment was that it looked more like a soup and a pasta plate.

Pane e Vino is a place we wanted to go for a long time but I guess our expectations were to high and we got disappointed. Hopefully you will have better luck but, just in case, I don't think we will be back.

I went to this restaurant a year ago, I ordered a meat platter and two pizza's it was really quiet good. I liked how i could put my own Balsamic vinegar and Olive oil on the pizza myself. Almost everything I saw other customers ordered going by looked good, they are more of a family style restaurant with slightly quirky decorations, from their decor it was clear that they appear to attempt to try cater to a variety of people with different specials available on different days. Staff all seemed nice. The only down side is it can at times be slightly difficult to find a car park.

This was honestly the worst service and place I've ever been. We booked for a byo on a Friday night and the waiter had to take our whole tables order 3 times before getting it right, waited 50 minutes for food, and I got a half eaten, half cold, yuck gnocchi. I watched the waiter place down my food to someone else, them start eating it, realise it wasn't theirs and then the waiter place it down in front of me. Tasted like packet pasta, something I could of made better at home. When I said it was average the chef came out and yelled at me. It was hands down the WORST service I've ever had in my life! Defiantly won't be returning.

Yeah ok going out for dinner lunch whatever its about the food. Ok. But in today's ways its gotta be like a sold out show of cirq de sole (mind my spelling). Pane & vino has it all your welcomed and treated like family maybe this is why there are so many regulars coming back. If it ain't broke as they say.
Great food filling and consistent

I'm always surprised when people say they've never been here. Almost every time I've been here the place has been jam packed. To the food... I've eaten here at least a dozen times and not once have I had a problem. The staff are always good and knowledgeable, have no problems getting things right and the food is always delicious. I've brought a table of twenty here and everything was impeccable. Tito the owner is always charming and happy to go the extra mile to make the customer happy. To me this place is what eating at a restaurant is about, great food, good service and a welcoming friendly atmosphere. I couldn't recommend this place enough.
Jess
I feel Pane & Vino should be rated higher than it is. To me, the meals here are authentic italian. The gnocci, the breads, the deli style platters, it's all good. The sicilian ice cream cake was a great finish to the meal. Be sure to book, this place is busy and you'll work out why. Lovely waiters who are clearly passionate about the food they serve.

Great spot with delicious food and fantastic service. Try the deep fried lamb rack in mushroom sauce - it's fabulous!!!! Highly recommended

My friends and I recently had a BYO at this restaurant. The staff were friendly, there was a separate area for us and the food was absolutely divine. Really good value for money and a nice atmosphere.

A gem of an Italian restaurant!
Run by real Italians, the experience is authentic, and so is their food.

I went for a friend's farewell, and bevause we were a larger table, had to order off the set menu. It's good value for money, as the set menu was only $35 and they have a BYO policy too.

We got three little pizza breads as a pre-starter to share between the table. I ordered the antipasto tipico as my starter, and lasagne as my main, both of which I was very impressed with.

My starter was a fresh mozzarella, Parma ham and rocket salad. My main was superb, and a large serving.

We'll definitely be back, and are keen to try the options from the Normal menu.
Myfoxycorner
Got takeaways from here, and although they were a little cold once we got home (our fault completely) the food was undoubtadbly delicious.

We had the bruschetta with fresh tomato, basil and mozarella which was tasty, fresh and made with quality ingredients (and on homemade bread). We also got the arancini balls, which although they didn't have a huge amount of flavour, they were so deliciously cheesy and crisp that I would definitely get them again.

Lastly, we ordered their Italiana pizza, which came with mozarella, tomato but no sauce on the base (again, my mistake in reading the menu). The pizza base was perfect, thin but not too crispy, just like we enjoyed in Italy! Next time I'll try one of their tomato based pizzas, or a couple of pasta dishes.

I would totally recommend eating in as opposed to getting this takeaway, the interior looks stunning and authentic, perfect for a romantic date night! We'll definitely be going back.

#challenge

Amazing! Amazing food. Amazing service. Love coming here it's becoming a weekly occurrence, could have a higher recommendation for a restaurant. Byo as well!! Handy being right next door to glengarry, best wine selection!

Love Pane & Vino! My favorite Italian. I have been here multiple times and always get great service, the food is good and good portion sizes. Always leave feeling full and satisfied. Would highly recommend to anyone, however if you are after a quiet meal, this is probably not the place for you. Lots of loud Italians......but if like me, it doesn't bother you then head along.

Been here for my birthday, and my first "authentic" italian restaurant. I must say that they impressed me on the food that they served. The portions were just enough, and the pizza was amazing! I have never looked at other pizzas the same after eating their pizza! Tiramisu was the best that I've ever tasted and the staff were all accomodating and friendly! We will definitely go back here! Bellisimo!
Veronica
Terrible. The wait staff have appalling English skills, so they managed to mess up my order twice. When I tried to correct them, they got aggressive and insisted I was lying. Will never go back. Ended up walking out.

Had a work dinner at Pane & Vino with about 20+ of us. They accommodated us well and we were seated in a separate part of the restaurant away from the main dining area.

Because we were a big group we had a set menu. The entree was my favourite dish of the night - the prawns were beautifully cooked and full of flavour! The main was also good - I had the eye fillet, which came with salad and the meat - no potato but there was bread to eat with it. The tiramisu was great to finish the meal - not too sweet and the coffee not excessively strong!

The waiters we had were great and entertaining and interacted with us all well. The atmosphere of the restaurant suited the number of us that we're dining there.

Overall it was a great night, with great people and great food.

Real italian restaurant in Auckland
Good and friendly service, amazing food...
Very busy during the weekend, you can find more relax during the week...highly reccommended !!!
Watch for what you get this is not a true Italian it sounded great but it wasn't could've done way better with basic cooking at home

I first discovered this wee gem with a group of friends and have been coming here regularly since.

I have ordered a variety of items from the menu, however I keep coming back to the Ravioli Verdi. This is the best pasta dish I have experienced since being in Auckland.

I would recommend this restaurant to anyone!

Went here last night with a group of 10 for a birthday dinner. We had heard good things about this restaurant however we were thoroughly disappointed. Our server was extremely rude, insisting that one of our group leave as he was not allowed to drink alcohol if he hadn't ordered any food (last time I checked, eating garlic bread counts as eating food). He insisted on coming back and telling us this a second time not listening to us after we had said he was eating. Later on, we were rudely told to move down as they needed another small table at the end for other people, which was actually empty for the next hour. Most of the food was mediocre at best, with the garlic bread and pizza lacking any flavour. My gnocchi was probably the only redeeming aspect of this restaurant but was such a tiny portion for a main it was laughable. Overall, this restaurant is definitely not worth your time or money. There are plenty of other authentic (and friendly!) Italian restaurants in Auckland. Go any to any of these first before coming here!!

Went here for a byo and highly recommend it! We sat outside and it was a little cold, there are heaters though but only at one end. I ordered the spinach & potato gnocchi which was delicious and the chicken ravioli was good too! Would go back again!

Our group of 6 visited Pane & Vino tonight for a birthday celebration. After reading the reviews I was fairly sceptical, but we were quite suprised! It was fantastic to go to a genuine (in my opinion) Italian eatery.

I ordered the tomato, basil and buffalo mozzarella bruschetta. Three pieces came out and each were very generously topped with huge slices of mozzarella and fresh tomatoes.

I also ordered the Ravioli Verdi. The pasta was fresh and stuffed full of ricotta, spinach and lemon. There was quite a bit of lemon which made the pasta quite sweet but very nice.

It was quite a pricey meal, with corkage being $8 a bottle. However, the meal was a great experience and I'm sure we'll be back to sample the pizza!

Heather
This would have to be the worst service that I have ever experienced at a restaurant. It was so awful that it has become a joke between the friends that I dined with.

Four of us called into the restaurant for a dessert and glass of lemoncello. The staff member that showed us to the table was very surly. When the desserts were brought to the table the two serving staff were arguing between themselves and practically threw the plates at us. One of the desserts brought to the table was not what was ordered and the staff member was argumentative when advised of this.

In regard to the food, while the tiramisu was edible the Semifreddo al cioccolato (described on the menu as “Homemade chocolate and walnuts ice cream cake” was definitely not homemade. It had a definite ‘manufactured’ look and tasted of the cardboard that it was obviously packaged in.

I would never to back to this restaurant.

A warm and cosy authentic Italian restaurant; Pane & Vino.

My favourite dish is their Linguine ai frutti di mare
(With squid, mussels, prawns, garlic rosemary and parsley in a white wine sauce)

Food: 4/5
Service: 4/5
Price: 4/5
www.foodculturenz.wordpress.com
Great place, its noisy and cramped but the food is as good as anywhere I have had it in Italy!

I really enjoy the place and every time I go am transported back in time to when I visited Italia!

The Gnocchi is TO DIE FOR, made fresh on site and like I said before as good as anywhere I have had it in Italy.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED / - BYO TOO!
Leanne Archer
I have been twice to this restaurant before in the past 18 months and it was lovely but last Sunday we took an overseas guest and it was very poor. Three of us ordered the special dish of Steak Ravioli done in a red wine sauce which tasted like the sauce was from a tin and the pasta was undercooked, as was the entree we ordered. Sorry but I cannot recommend this restaurant and maybe you should try the food yourselves before you serve it and you will know how bad it is.
Victoria Carran
Always have so much fun here! Make sure to ask to be seated inside to make the most of the atmosphere. Have had amazing food the four times I have eaten there. Can get quite expensive -double check the bill.

I usually can't be bothered about writing reviews on websites but this place was so bad I have to.

I ordered a cannelloni stuffed with beef ragu and it was revolting. The meat was all pasty and doesn't taste like beef at all. I went with a big group and didn't want to make a scene so I did not complain. My friends' food were not any better. The arancini was also gross. I know this is a cheap BYO and the waiter was really nice. Unfortunately the food just couldn't pull it over the line for me. I am not expecting fine dining experience but the food is just really really bad. The only safe thing to eat here are pizzas.

Shame because I really wanted to like this place.

Went along with a small group-we asked the waiter for his selection of some beautiful antipasto starters-fantastic!! For a main dish I got the whole stuffed squid-cooked extremely well, the squid was tender with a beautiful tomato sauce. We didn't realise it was BYO but asked the waiter for his recommendation for the wine-he nailed it on his suggestion. For me this is a GREAT tasting restaurant that is completely underestimated. If you want authentic, rustic Italian with some real character then Pane & Vino is your place. My only regret is not getting the waiters name to mention him. I will be bringing friends back in numbers!! ARRIVEDERCI!!!!
Char & Ricky Pundog
I've been to Pane & Vino numerous times and have always had a great experience. I went there for a friends birthday and all the waiters even came out and sang happy birthday! The food is really good, nothing flash and well priced.

DELICIO MINISCULI!!!

Awesome pasta dishes but just NOT ENOUGH....
Pity to see such delicious food being handicapped by such small portions...
$5 pp for corkage ( when advertised per wine bottle) ... maybe should be set table charge to get around confusion....if really need corkage in first place...no cork & no wine glasses!!
Anna
It's noisy and it's fun... The food is flavourful and authentic. Tito's hospitality is second to none. Pane e Vino is perfect for groups. Love it!
Chelsea
Don't understand some of these terrible reviews. The bruschetta we ordered was a little burnt, but it was fine so we didn't complain. However, I'm sure if we did, the lovely Italian waiters would have obliged and provided us with new ones! The pizza was spectacular, and I know my pizza! Perfect. Even my boyfriend who considers himself a pizza connoisseur was impressed.
Dining with a meal voucher ($20 for $40 worth of food) felt like we were almost stealing as the prices were so reasonable to begin with and the food and service so good!
Will definitely be back. Good stuff Pane e Vino, especially honoring a Grabone voucher with pride and treating us exactly the same as everyone else. Thoroughly impressed.
Laura Jury
Some really great points about Pane & Vino are the set menu is awesome for large groups 10+ as there is loads to choose from and is great value for money. But sadly for me the down side totally ruined the experience of eating out.

1. No Wine Glasses, yet a corkage is charges $5 per person, regardless of if the everyone in your group is drinking. and clearly the staff are sick of having the same conversation with their customers and have just resorted to being really rude in order to get the point across.

2. The main Pasta meal (a lot of pasta with very little sauce) was served is large catering tubs but the only spoons they could/would offer us was two tablespoons.

3. Clearly they recycle food to other tables, because half way through one of the Pasta catering tubs was a spoon baked into the food.

4. Even though a Pizza course was offered in the set menu we had to ask the very rude server for pizza, his answer was "well you didn't finish the Pasta course so you don't get to have Pizza" and then he agreed to send out two pizzas for a group of 12 people.

Some people will love this place for the fact that it is good value for money, but the food is not that flash, and you have to enjoy eating someone else's leftovers.

I would recommend to bring your own serving spoons and wine glasses, but still expect to pay corkage.

Visited March 2013

We came here last night in a group of 12 for a friends Birthday. I wouldn't recommend this place to anyone at all.

Firstly, the service is shockingly bad. Long story short, the waiter who served us had a real bad attitude problem. We had only been sat down for 10 minutes and already we felt like we had just offended his mother.

This continued throughout the night, everything seemed like such an effort on their side.

We were encouraged to do a group set menu which sounded good, but the starters were pretty cheaply made/mediocre and the mains felt like we had had another groups leftovers. The pasta came out in a huge metal tray like school dinners, they gave us 2 small spoons to serve ourselves, when asked for bigger spoons, the waiter again snapped at us.

Halfway through this dish we had actually found a used spoon underneath the top layer that appeared to be from a previous dish, therefore giving us the idea that this dish was actually leftovers from a previous party. Obviously we didn't finish the dish.

Dessert didn't taste too bad but presentation-wise it was also pretty bad. they put down 3 plates of tiramasu for 12 of us, with about 9 profiteroles - we all felt like zombies fighting for leftovers on a carcass.

The only reason we didn't complain there and then was for the sheer reason it was our friends birthday and we didn't want to make a big deal.

But I would definitely not recommend this place to anyone.

Update: this isn't even mediocre dining (as per Maria D's comments) - recycling food is disgusting and it doesn't take much to smile and learn a small amount of customer service. My only suspicion is that some of the 'great' reviews on here are from the owners themselves or 'friends'
Louise Lawrence
This place is a nightmare and do not recommend at all. Had a group booking for 15 and had the set menu...arrival at 7.30pm and still hadn't received our mains by 10.30pm!!!! Service appalling and manager rude and unwilling to make any concessions...(despite agreeing based on his review of ctv footage of the evening that we had every right to complain)

Food average so no saving grace there either.
Moniquea Frear
Awesome experience! I love this place. It is no fine dining, but good fun and great pizza! Very chilled out and great customer service! Good idea for a big group BYO dinner as it can get very noisy (though I guess it depends on the night)
Lee
After waiting a while to order, we were hungry so all ordered mains. Food took over an hour to arrive, and all came out at different times, the last one being 15 minutes after the first. The lasagne was on special and we were informed it was huge, it really wasnt and was served so hot my friend burnt her mouth. The cannaloni was 3 pathetic servings, too dry due to not enough sauce. The pizza was big but with restricted toppings and the spaghetti bolognese was average. Basically, slow and bad service with small portions of over priced food. They did give us free bread but we didn't eat it
Monica
Ate here for dinner. Had the calamari for an entree which was enjoyable and pretty tasty however I had the chicken cannelloni meal for my main and thought it was quite average, also it came out steaming hot and nearly burnt my tongue, though my friend enjoyed her chicken ravioli. My main qualm and disappointment were the small portions as I was hungry by the time I got home, however the pizzas served on an adjacent table looked well sized. Waiters are pretty friendly and quite a cozy restaurant however the outside table we sat at was on a bit of a slant and the chairs were uncomfortable, with the decour not the flashest.
Amanda
We started with an anti-pasto platter to share, which was fresh and gorgeous. Then the 2 boys had a starter. These were tasty and just right sized. The mains were DIVINE... I had the mushroom ravioli... YUM and the other mains looked and tasted just as good as mine! Dessert was also a must!

And to finish it off the Limoncello of course!

The price is excellent as is Tito who was very friendly whilst maintaining his efficiency (as were all the staff). My top bit of advice (apart from "Go Here For Dinner") is to take your own wine as they don't have a great selection and the wine shop next door is over-priced!
All in all... we will most definately be back!
Barbara Millicent Harvey
Had a voucher, rang to make a booking, was immediately told what I "couldn't have" On arrival this theme continued, very restricted in what we could order, even though the prices were the same in many cases ( to wider menu) We were made to feel most unwelcome. The proprietor was brusque to the point of rudeness, the food was O.K. but portions very small. I thought the whole idea of a voucher was to encourage returns. I certainly won't be returning. Went along the road and ordered dessert and coffee elsewhere, rather than line Pane and Vino's pocket any further. Motto - don't subscribe to voucher scheme if you don't like the concept - they obviously don't.

Absolutely delicious!
Genuine Italian cooking with friendly staff!
Reasonably priced too.
Highly recommended :)

Tasty, authentic Italian

Rated 4 stars but deserves 4.5 if not 5.

We have dined here at least half a dozen times and enjoyed takeaway on a number of other occasions.

Particularly enjoy their pasta. Bruschetta and deepfried entrees (potato croquette and aborio rice balls) yumm. Also, of course, pizza. Have only sampled mains in passing.

However keep coming back for the pasta. They will make to suit your taste; e.g I love their take on my fav chicken, feta, chorizo/bacon, capsicum, onion white sauce fettuccine or penne (with extra parmesan of course). Partner very fond of their gnoochi.

Best thing is the appropriate, authentic sauces. No over-creamed, gluggy stuff here; just the real deal.

Clearly from reviews below some have a problem with the sensible portion sizes. In our book taste (quality) beats quantity any day. And frequently after only sharing a starter we find ourselves enjoying our leftover individual pastas for next day lunch; so can't be that small!

Credentials: In previous lives we've both worked at (and appreciate) top notch eateries and cafes. I've travelled and eaten in Italy and friends from Europe who are very experienced in fine dining have separately sampled and complimented this fine restaurant in the past year.

Went for lunch with my sister visiting from Melbourne on Friday, 29 June. We had a voucher, but did not make a booking. We were welcomed warmly. My sis had the gnocchi which was fab, so was the chicken/pesto linguine. The dessert was divine. Although it was busy we were surprised the service was not lacking and we did not have to wait too long for the food.
This was my 3rd visit, never disappointed. Love the specials on the menu boards, will definitely go again.
NomNomPanda
Turned up for lunch without booking to use a deal discount. Waiter asked if we had a voucher, collected it from us and read through it. Was worried there would be restrictions on what we could order, but we could have anything, and we ordered the specials of the day. Service was friendly, the pastas were excellent and the portion size was just right (though a heavy eater may be left wanting). Overall a good experience, though full price lunch feels a little pricey at $20.
Hannah
Absolutely horrid place! I warn .. Stay Away!!!
Had an online voucher and ended up going for the take away option. Food was hardly portioned fair with nothing special about the meal. The staff were lacking in customer service and when we spoke to the manager/owner, he told us off for being upset! This has got to be The Worst place I've been in a very very long time.

I went there on 15 May for lunch made my booking mentioning we have voucher, seated all went well till there but when we got the food the portion size was shocking, i got 8 piece of my tortellini pasta which they sell for $ 19 and wife get couple of extra because her dish was veg, I had the voucher worth of $ 40.00 and believe me we were served kids portion, not going back!!!!!!!!even with vouchers sorry

I "tried" to celebrate my 30th birthday with twenty friends at Pane e Vino restaurant. To begin with, I was a little unsettled by how blasé the restaurant had been regarding my booking – I had to ring and confirm my booking a number of times including final numbers and pay my deposit (which they ended up forgetting I had in fact paid), not once did I hear from them directly.

I had to agree to the $40 set menu, which was no problem as we were a large group, and I expected this. Half way through dinner, the manager came over and offered limencello shots for the table, which the waiter promptly brought over. When it came to pay for the meals at the end, the manager told us we had to pay for all the shots at $7 per shot. As we were on a set menu and were never informed or told directly that the shots were not part of the set menu we argued with them over this. This was not a pleasant experience as the manager would not budge and was extremely rude. Eventually, the restaurant gave us the shots we never asked for at half price.

This restaurant thinks they can try to make a quick buck off people who are enjoying themselves and not one of the staff members understands what customer service means. To add insult to injury, the food was terrible. A number of my guests nearly choked on rosemary stems hidden in their pasta (thanks to sloppy chefs) and the food was bland and boring.
I would warn anyone against dining here, especially if you are looking forward to celebrating a special milestone with friends. You will be disappointed and left with more than a bad taste in your mouth. Appalling!

First thing first, Food was amazing!! The pizza was thin and full of flavour, the pasta the same and. The Waiter was polite and a chilled pro! The Owner was singing in the kitchen and being his out there self possibly rude possibly European or whatever. The point is 5 stars and will tell my friends how much I enjoyed it.
Lavaza coffee was good too! Ciao
Hayley
Our favourite thing about Pane & Vino is that the pizzas taste just like the ones in Italy. The margarita pizza is a personal favourite - simple but absolutely delicious. The pasta dishes are equally amazing and you can tell you are eating quality pasta. We have been here many times (upwards of 10) and have never had a bad experience yet. Don't expect silver service here, there aren't wine glasses for example; you just use water glasses. However, I think this adds to the relaxed atmosphere of true Italian dining - its about good food, good people and good times. Pure and simple.
Kirsty Brough
Came here with my boyfriend for a pre-Valentines dinner, first impressions- the menu is HUGE. So many dishes to choose from, which is usually a danger sign, as not many restaurants can have that many ingredients and still make fresh, nice food. But we ordered, and were not disappointed. The food was fresh and delicious, and my mushroom ravioli was INSANE. I have been craving it ever since. The restaurant was nice and quiet, it being quite late on a Monday night, and the atmosphere and service were friendly and very Italian. I look forward to my next visit!

Absolutely disgusted !! I can't believe this business is still open, I bought an online voucher for a discounted meal, it's was only valid for take out, I know why now, when we got home and open the food we were shocked at how small the portion sizes were, and worst of all my meal if that's what I can call it, was a 1/3 of a portion scooped into a pre-used container, plus the other meal didn't come with the side dishes as mentioned on the menu. While we were their picking up our food, there was shouting and confusion in a place with less than 6 customers and we could see the food they were serving was burnt. Not impressed, there's too much good competition out there place to be still open.
Vanessa Hunt
This place has the most authentic Italian food that i have tasted since I left Sydney - finally. Don't expect silver service and yes its a bit frantic but for the price and the portion and the taste its second to none. You drink wine out of beaker glasses so not for the pretencious - that's the best part of it.
Lauren Simpson
I love this place.

A group of 5 of us came here for one of our friends' birthdays, and had booked several days in advance. We were told our table was outside and pointed towards the door, however there were no tables free outside and were then squeezed onto a small table (for 4) in a corner inside.

Our waitress was friendly but frazzled and rushed, although she had 4 tables to look after. As it is BYOW we asked for wine glasses and were told that she couldnt give us extra glasses other than the water glasses we were given. After ten minutes we asked could we please have some of the water glasses from the empty table next to us and were given (after much ado) 3 to share between the 5 of us.

After ordering, one girl's calamari arrived after ten minutes, and the bruschetta we had ordered as starters arrived ten minutes after that. The bruschetta was burnt and a measly two slices. After another 20 odd minutes the rest of our food arrived, two pizzas, which were good and the sole highlight of the evening. Spaghetti Bolognaise was quite sweet and mediocre at best.

Throughout the evening the abrasive, loud and OTT manager/owner was swooping around the restaurant, gesticulating and shouting in Italian, making the already noisy atmosphere quite uncomfortable.

When we paid the bill, we pointed out to the manager that we were not happy to pay the corkage fee for the one bottle of wine that we had opened as we had only been given 3 water glasses between 5 of us, and that was after asking several times. He told us, quite rudely, that they only give one glass per diner, and the same glass is to be used for water, white wine, red wine, etc. We questioned this and he told us to bring our own glasses next time, and when we commented that there wouldn't be a next time, he was nonplussed and arrogant, not caring that we had had a bad experience.

In a climate where Customer is King and good service is a necessity, Pane & Vino let themselves down horribly with awful service and even worse attitudes towards their customers. Avoid at all costs.

Lovely place, great atmosphere although its very loud and not the best venue for a romantic dinner!..
We had a table of 7, and most of the food was rated as average by all diners.

We ordered Pizza which was dry in most cases and very sparse with toppings, the stuffed squid was bland, and the cannelloni was OK. Overall Great service and a good time had by all but I would not go back. The ladies toilets are shocking and need some serious attention!

The food was very nice however the service was dreadful. Drinks took on average 20 mins to be delivered and we.had to remind the waiter several times. This restaurant is let down badly by it's waiting staff. Probably won't be going back when there are other great Italian restaurants around.

We booked a large group - 15 adults and 10 kids for the Abuffatta Italiana on Monday night. Booked via website and confirmed via phone the day before. The food was great - basic but authentic and tasty and there was plenty of it. Entrees, pizza, pasta, salad, and desert. The staff were friendly and polite. We had 3 long tables outside and it was great. Highly recommend it for a large groups and great food at a reasonable price.

Had a booking with a group of friends. We turned up on time, and half our table had given to someone else a few minutes beforehand. There was not enough seats for our group, and no apology. The manager seemed like we were putting him out. We didn't order anything, and left. Unimpressed to say the least.

hey yes they are busy but that is a good sign, no one wants a restaurant that doesnt turn its tables quickly!! Great Buzz easy take away and even though we love to cook italian at home, its great to encourage any italian specialist in Auckland. Carry on.....

Made a booking through their website a couple of weeks beforehand and then rang to confirm a couple of days before. When we arrived they didn't have a table ready for us, tried to offer us a table with four chairs (there were five of us). Ended up on a makeshift table outside with 2 proper seats and a bench, only partly sheltered and it was beginning to rain. We asked for wine glasses and were told that because they were so busy they didn't have any and that we should use our water glasses. We left and won't be returning.

We have been here about four times and will keep coming back. The place is as authentic as it comes having been to Italy recently it compares well. The prices are reasonable and it is our local. Super family friendly and great Italian food oh yeah and good prices too. Bella!

We ate there on Friday night. The food was Italian as in Italy, as opposed to Italian as in New York, London, Melbourne or Auckland. The service was warm and friendly, and very efficient without being impersonal. The food was sublime, and we are definitely going back.

A small authentic (don't quote me on that I'm no expert) feeling Italian restaurant.

It gets loud! The walls bounce all the drunken wails and exclamations back at you, and as a result, yes, beardy guy, we did enjoy your excitement over how much your guy acquaintance likes the d...good luck with that!

The servers are great but bus, so order as fast as they have to run, for both your sakes.

The croquettes are good, but Toto's Pizza do them better. The Ravioli Verdi is lovely though a little small in portion. We tried the panacotta and protiferoles for dessert, and they were nice, but quite average.

In general, it's a decent restaurant, but it doesn't merit its mid-high prices.

This restaurant is definitely one of the least pleasant places I've visited. My mate decided to have a birthday gathering at this restaurant, the seating for a larger group was pretty average, with very little space. However that was not the downside of the evening. The main issues were the set menu they offered us were more expensive than simply ordering the same stuff from the main menu, the catch here was they wouldn't let us order the same stuff from the menu. We had to pick "set menu A" yet if I ordered that same pasta with the dessert, overall it would be cheaper.

What really made sure I won't re-visit this place was the serving staff/waiting staff's behaviour towards female customers. The male cooks/waiters wolf whistled and commented on the girls of our group making them feel very uncomfortable. Perhaps other girls have given the staff a positive response, so they keep this harassment and unprofessional environment.

I wouldn't recommend taking a date here, the food itself wasn't too bad, but for the price, I did not think I was getting enough food either. But the appalling service was their nail in the coffin.
