Review Thai Archer - Auckland

Genuine Reviews
The staff were all very sweet and patient, and service was quick. They even went out their way to ensure the waters were refilled even when not asked, and were so kind and thoughtful. The customer service and service was 5/5. Would be wonderful if the indoor lights were brighter as it is quite dark inside but the decorations inside were fabulous. The food was quite good - 4/5 :)

My family had lunch here. Environment is nice. We had - Tom Yum Talay soup which is strongly sour and spicy; - pineapple fried rice which is very good with sweet pineapple, roasted cashew nut and prawns; - crispy squid which is average and good Mayo sauce; - Pad Talay with combined seafood which is creamy and a little sweet. It is about $25 each person

Very quiet so not buzzy but nice to catch up Food just perfect ,tho presentation of mixed entree could be improved compared to other Thai restaurants in area Awesome you can bring your own wine and the cocktails our friends ordered looked great ,certainly enjoyed

A spur-of-the-moment decision to go for lunch on Saturday. Very quiet, just us and one other table. Ordered a bit more than normal for a 3 member family. Finished everything. Just one person for service, who was very polite and offered his best reccomdations from the menu. I guess the best testimony is when my 7 year old, who's idea for a great meal is McDonald's, saying 'best meal ever'! Too lazy to write down what we had, but I'm confident everything's great. We'll be back!

We had a table with 8 people. Starters arrived all at same time and the mains after also at the same time. Very nice food nicely presented and friendly service. Prices very reasonable for the quality 👌 would recommend this restaurant highly

One of the best Thai food experiences I've had all year. Highly recommend.

We really felt welcome, and the food. Ingredient was so fresh. Lovely team

The food was very nice. More casual style of Thai food, not too fancy, but that’s what gives the restaurant its authenticity. I love how they have pictures of people in the hallway, it shows culture and heritage instead of just being a plain restaurant.

I Really recommend this menu... it so great! 🤤✌🏻

Drunken noodles were tasty, but the medium spice level was more like hot or extra hot (swollen lips level). I would be trying again but with mild in future. Serving size average for price.

Great place amazing staff and I've always had amazing food and service ... recommend it to all

Still one of the best Thai restaurants in Auckland. Staff are always friendly and helpful

Excellent!! Lovely inside, welcoming staff, great food, Vegetarian option :)
Trish Roberts
Quite possibly the best Thai food in Auckland! Never had any as spot on as our meal.
Janice Roth
Gorgeous food. Flavors perfect. Excellent service. Lovely ambience. Definitely going back.

Service was great and the food was simply delicious. The management and staff were absolutely amazing.

Brilliant service and atmosphere and outstanding food. So good!!

The atmosphere and interior is very cozy and homey. There is sufficient space inside for the amount of tables. Some of the decor were hand-made by family. I find that incredibly cool and it adds a lot of character and history to the restaurant.

The staff are always lovely, friendly and attentive. They were kind enough to cater to our Vegan friend and are knowledgeable about the menu when we asked for Vegan options.

The food is absolutely delicious! They make my most favourite Satay Chicken dish. We normally have this with the Prawn Fried Rice. We've ordered other dishes like the Pad Thai, Duck Pad Met Mamuang, Gang Duck, Spring Rolls, Vegan Fried Rice, etc. The portions may look small because of the bowl sizes, but they are very filling, generous with the protein and vegetables and suberb quality and quantity for the price. Always forget to take photos because the food looks too scrumptious and we just want to dig in!

To our friends at Thai Archer Restaurant, thank you always for your smiles, bestest efforts, kindness, and warmth during our visits. Looking forward to our next visit!

Best pad Thai I have ever tasted in my life. I have also tried the Pra Ram Long Song? The stir fry with peanut sauce. That was also the tastiest stir fry I’ve tried in a while. The stir fry didn’t come with rice so we ordered rice on the side. I was very impressed with this place and would definitely come again! Still cannot get over how yum their food was. 100% recommend.

Ambiance is pretty warm with old fashion decor. Staffs are super friendly, service nice and quick. Food was ok, could be better. I live around this area so i hope restaurant here can make better food, so i don't need to go city and eat then
Maria
Only ever gotten take away from here, but always a good experience, and the food is full of flavour. Also a bonus that they will make it really spicy if you ask for it!
Nicole Monique
This place never fails us, food is very authentic. We travel all the way from the North Shore because it's so good. Great Tom Kha soup and Red Thai Currys
Paul Frehley
Food was fairly average and portion size small. The worst thing was its summer and they had no air conditioning on. Only a few windows open on one side of the restaurant. The place was like a sauna. Hence it was a very unpleasant dining experience. Also being told we could have a serving of rice and then if we needed anymore we would have to pay extra seemed very stingy. Most restaurants come round and offer rice as a part of the meal at no extra cost. Wouldn't go again

Dined here tonight 5 pax, only 2 other tables of 2 pax each, very quiet for a Saturday night.
Excellent service, nice water, tasted like filtered.
Great food, but small portions, rice perfectly cooked, topped up often.
Last ate here a year ago, will return.
Maria Lambert
We've been dining here and getting takeaways for over 11 years and it is consistently delicious, the service is fast, the servings are generous, the peanut satay is purrrfect..... excellent restaurant and takeaways.

Recommended this restaurant - glad I visited. Fantastic layout in old house, nicely presented and tasty food for a good price. Curry puffs - yum!!
I hope to go back

Good things first: -Staff are lovely
-The ambiance is warm and nice
-Prices are well set
-Good selection of drinks

Bad Things:The food is very poor. Lot's of Thai food competition in Auckland. There is nothing (we Had 2 curries, Pad Thai and Spring rolls) that sets your food apart.
Pad Thai is almost unrecognizable in taste and texture
The Duck Gang (Red Curry) has almost no duck in it, poor quality duck meat. Spices are powder spices, not the real deal.
Vegetarian spring rolls taste like cardboard.

Recommendation:
1) Get someone from Thailand to re-engineer the quality of ingredients your restaurant uses and to reset the cooking standards used in your kitchen. There is no love in your food and there appears to be no knowledge of how it should taste.
2) You don't need to adapt Thai food to 'western tastes' if that is your explanation. People in NZ love Thai food as it is done in Thailand.

I’ve updated my review from our recent dinner visit. Their food is much improved! The duck krapao was delicious and a Medium got will be spicy for most people! Pad Thai was also pretty good. They do have an odd rule: minimum spend is $20 per adult, not applicable for kids...strange.

Came here for a late lunch with my cousin.

It has a homey ambiance that sets the tone for a pleasurable dining experience. Wait staff are accommodating and friendly, even to my toddler.

In terms of food, however, I believe Thai Archer does not stand out among the other Thai diners in Auckland. Their money maker dish, for instance, has got a thick and tough wrapper. Other dishes are pretty decent but lackluster. Would still come back here because of their unlimited rice, though. LOL
Beccs
Great Thai restaurant! Although they expect a minimum charge for adults of $20 the food is great! We had pad Thai 4/5, roast duck stir fry 5/5 and spring rolls! The service was ok and the ambience better than your average Thai!!
Fridaynightdiners
Busy for a Wednesday good service tasty food .All the dishes had a sweet element to them except the beef salad . Would go back again but in a larger group to try different dishes

Fantastic food, great service & fast. Highly recommended to all Thai food lovers. Actually the best we've found- even better than our favourite Thai!

It’s been a while since we last went to a Thai restaurant. Drove by Thai Archer and decided to give it a go. We ordered a snapper dish, a soup and pork curry dish between the two of us. The food was great and one of the good thing is they have free flow of rice (although I need not have more). The portion is generous and is definitely value for money.
Fluir Wu
I thought the food was really good, better than any of the Thai food places I've been to. Service was great, glass of water is always full as the staff always come by to refill when needed. Location was good and easy to find. Parking was a slight problem, although the relatively long walk back to the car helped to digest the food we ate.
Bridget Lawrence
The food and service here are great. The staff are so polite and welcoming. Takeaway is quick and easy too although you need to be careful to speak clearly on the phone. Curries, pad Thai and stirfys are all yum.
Rowan Rebecca
We've been a few times now and have always enjoyed our meals. It's well priced and they have great sized meals. A lovely Pad Thai here and nice spicy curries.

Nice family for 6 with visitors from overseas. The meals were superb, great serving sizes, very good service. Nice atmosphere, will definitely be back.
Bobby Anderson
Nice building, friendly staff and quick service. We had the massamum lamb which was beautifully cooked. Next up was the Pad See Ew which had a nice chewy noodle texture and good mix of ingredients. Our other dish was too sweet for my liking (garlic pepper prawns)

A total Thai food lover, a friend and I thought of trying out the food here after all the reviews we read about The Thai Archer. I must say they were good. We ordered Curry puffs and Massaman Nua. The massaman curry was amaaaazing. The beef pieces were so soft and just melted in the mouth. The curry puffs was a little disappointing as the inside had very little or no mince at all. The service was good. Will definitely visit again
Reserved a table here for Friday night dinner. Nice little place, reasonably priced with a pleasant ambience and attentive staff. However it could do with a bit of overall light as it's quite dark at some tables. Ordered the lamb mussaman which was delicious. The Gai Ka Ta with beef was really good too. The starters of veg spring rolls and prawn cutlets wrapped in rice pastry were average. Overall, a good experience.

Awesome food and really great customer service. Awesome ambiance and all the dishes were amazing full of flavour and authenticity of how it should be ... can't wait to go again.

Why do u make ur dishes sweet ???
Pad Thai goong Thai hot is sweet ! Why ?
Ridiculous.

I don't like thai food but this is the only thai restaurant that I would go with hubby since he loves thai food.

Food here is always good and they cater to how I want my food to be done. Great service and great staff.

Being vegetarian it is often difficult to find good food (especially if you are not so keen on a particular cuisine) but this place is really good at vegetarian dishes. Plus the ambiance is great - especially for date nights :)

Never fails to please. Have been going for years and see the same lovely staff which are always very accomodating and polite. The taste of the food is impeccable! Have not had a single dish that is not fulfilling. Price range is very reasonable considering other Thai restaurants. I love that it is small and cozy without being overcrowded! Bigs ups to the team and management! Many restaurants should learn from you guys!

I ordered a Pad Khing which tasted amazing! I loved it. However, I have to downgrade the rating due to poor service. Constantly had to wait ages to get water (why not have a bottle on the table like other restaurants if you can't service it well), and we were barely given any rice at a time so had to keep asking for more, yet were charged every single time. This practice is standard at Thai restaurants, however usually they give alot more rice per serving! Who knew rice could be such a money making scheme...

I use to come to this restaurant all the time 17 years ago and just the last 2 times I have been it has gone down hill so much that I will never go there again. The service was exceptionally poor. I had to ask for water x2 then a drink x2 and I asked for an other drink that never came which could've been a misunderstanding...I'm giving them the benefit of doubt but I went up to order that drink. When it came time to pay they wanted to charge me for 1/2 the meal that I DIDNT EAT but hey its not going to break me so I paid and said that's fine but I will let others know of your poor service and poor Squid Ka Ta.

Been here a long time ago must go back .. remember it was really good must make a call in soon,
Used to go with an old friend very often .. never disappointed

Busy little resturant and my local so thought I had better try it! Service wasn't great - we were directed to a table then I had to ask for menus. Food came out quickly but definitely could have been warmer! The food though was very yummy! Lots of flavour and well presented. I had Thai peanut chicken stir fry and my dad had the whole snapper.

Lovely Thai Food.I had Dinner today,We enjoyed a lot.My favourite was the Prawn Fritters from the starters and The Tom Yum Soup was Delicious,Balanced with a sweet and sour Lemongrass flavoured chicken soup.Their Green Thai Curry was also very Aunthentic,The Beef Sizzler and Vegetables with Chicken on CashweNut was yummy with a BBQ smoky taste. If you want to enjoy Good Thai Food at a soothing ambiance on weekends,Visit this Restaurant.Very Nice place. It has a homely service,Staff are friendly and Food is Tasty.
The Thai Archer seemed to be a popular restaurant at Royal Oak. We were led to one of the small (jammed) dining rooms with only 3 or 4 small tables. Mixed appetiser included a stuffed puff pastry, a spring roll, chicken satay & a deep-fried minced chicken & prawn on toast - satay was tough & spring roll not appealing. For the mains, we had roasted duck stir-fried with basil leaves, deep-fried whole snapper with tamarind sauce & pineapple fried rice. I regret to say, all dishes failed to impress. We finished with deep-fried ice-cream which was again, just OK.

Efficiency of wait staff needs a lot of improvement. I saw customers at our adjacent table watch their table being prepared - cleaned & sprayed. Shouldn't it be prepared before being seated? We had to ask for water-refilling a couple of times, and I definitely wouldn't like to be asked to pass my glass for refilling, but because of the jammed space, I'd accept her action. And no customers would like to face their finished dishes for minutes. I may belong to the older generation of foodies, but standard of service should only improve, not degrade.
(Food - 3.5/5; Service - 2/5; Ambience - 3/5)

Lovely Thai meal really like the fact you can substitute tofu for any meat.
Restaurant fit out needs attention it's very out dated but other than that comfortable. I did feel it was a bit over priced but the meal was lovely.

Nothing could beat good Thai curries and good Thai food , I went there on sat night and as I entered the place with my sister we got a good feel of the ambience and were properly greeted by the staff. The menu was quite elaborate and was quite attractive aswell , I ordered for Thai chicken noodles, Spring rolls and a veg soup. My sister ordered for a mix Veges with Thai sauce and it was completely delicious also chicken satay was so good the chicken was tender and properly coated in sauce. The best thing was there is no portion size of rice, the waiters come to you holding a bowl of rice asking how much rice would U need I loved that concept as it reduces the wastage of food. The only thing I would love to see on their menu is some desserts 😉, would defiantly go back highly recommended

We live close to here and it's a favourite family outing for Thai food. The restaurant has a spacious, relaxed atmosphere and the staff are nice - though at times not very attentive (missing cutlery, not enough glasses for the table etc).

The food though is consistently great. The curries all have great depth of flavour, there's a good range of meals on the menu and all dishes come with servings of rice. A generally good experience each time and will definitely be going back again!

Was so excited to try this place, I love Thai food. Came here for my mothers birthday (15 of Feb) and got seated by the window which was fine because it was hot. What I didn't realise is that right by the window were people that would be smoking. Have in mind that I had a 1 year old son sitting there. I don't like him near people smoking so I asked to move. The waiter looked at me and said "no other seats" I looked around and I saw a spare table but I just assumed it was reserved. Ordered our food got out starters and they were so beautiful and what was surprising was that I became quite full. For my main I ordered the duck red curry. It was beautiful and couldn't finish it all luckily they were more than happy to give us a doggy bag. The only downfall was the amount of rice they put on your plate. its less than half a spoon so i finish it after about 4 bites and have to put my hand up to ask for more. We ordered dessert and asked to put a candle on my mothers cake. They came in turned the lights off and sang happy birthday. It was our time to leave and before I left went to check if that table I asked to move to was used. IT HAD BEEN UNTOUCHED and we could've moved there which really got on my nerves seeing how many peolpe came and smoked while my son was near by.

Food was amazing
Service was average (some waiters didn't really know what they were doing)

Enjoyed my time :-)
Timer
Was quite disappointed. We had the classic tom yum soup for starter. Tom yum was nicely presented in a nice bowl but the presentation was not enough to make up the average taste.

Our main jungle curry and Panang curry were uninspiring neither. The jungle curry was lack of balance and seriously overwhelmed by the bamboo shoots. Hardly other vegetable. Panang curry was not acceptable but only at food court.

Very contradicting experience for those reviewers before me. Maybe it was a bad day in the kitchen.

The service was good through It's a restaurant after all. Food must be good surely

Being thai food lovers and located close by to us we had to try this place out. Definitely worth a visit! This restaurant is welcoming as it looks like a house, and the ambiance is what you would expect at a nice Asian restaurant. The service is very good, we were greeted and seated promptly and the staff were attentive during our time there.

We ordered the Gang Puk and the Pad Thai Jae. Both dishes were well portioned and really satisfying. The curry was very tasty and rich in flavour. The Pad Thai Jae reminded us of the authentic flavours we experienced during our travels in Thailand.

Overall we throughly enjoyed our experience here and would recommend to others.

Stopped in for an early dinner with friends. Had read reviews about bad service which is something I think is inexcusable when you are paying to eat out, but I'm happy to say the service tonight was good. Even when one of our dishes was missing the extra mushrooms that had been requested, it was promptly rectified with no issue whatsoever.
Even though we were relatively early, the restaurant filled up quite quickly. May pay to book if you want a specific time particularly a Saturday night like us.
Good menu with a variety of options without overdoing it. So many places have such a large menu it's impossible to know what's good or where to start.
Nice beverage menu - again a good range without overdoing it. We chose the Singha beer which is always nice with Thai.
We each chose a dish so ordered: stir fry tofu with Veges, duck with Veges, sizzling beef platter, stir fry prawns with Veges. All dishes arrived in good time. We also ordered a spring roll entree.
All dishes were good - hot & tasty. Decent amount of prawns in the prawn dish too which is good as it is pricy compared to some Thai restaurants.
Only suggestion would be that extra Veges would be nice in each dish rather than just a small amount as they make the dish feel more refreshing & balanced.
No time to look at dessert as we were headed to a function.
Overall a good Thai restaurant - one of our party commented that it was the nicest she's tried so far.
Nandini Chand
Food was amazing and loved the dinning environment, not too noisy and tables are spread out. Only downside was that we had to ask for the menus and grabbing the waitresses attention was not an easy task.
Trish
Had a take out, they said it would take 20 minutes but it took less time. Had a yellow curry, lots of meat and zingy. Really enjoyed it. Partner has a pad Thai, he loved all the veggies in it.
Vijay S. Sethi
Absolutely great food with an awesome vegetarian selection. Clean and tidy facilities. Friendly service but order to serve time can surely be improved. Very very cramped - so if you're a party of 6+ best to book elsewhere. Noisy like hell...so if you don't mind shouting at the top of your voice to talk to your neighbour - go for it!...but to be fair, I've only been there over the weekends.

Went to first ever Thai restaurant here in Auckland. Tell you what the food was awesome and delicious. It was more tasty than I thought. The service was fine. The only issue I had was delivery time. It was crowded but still nobody wants to wait to be served with their main course right after starter.

After many rounds of take aways we decided to dine in. It was busy for a mid week dinner time. The service was good. Ambience of this place is good too. One of my fav thai eat outs
Thai Archer has good flavours in their dishes. Massaman Curry is my favourite, beef is soo tender , curry is so flavoursome.Pad Thai is also good and portions are generous too.
FlyingMonkey
Loved the atmosphere and food here. Good portion and good service. Had a red curry duck and my first ever pad Thai there ! Loved the pad Thai. The curry came with sooooo much ingredients like veggies and meat etc. Not stingy at all! Will return for some more curry next time!
Pef Mmg
Food was OK, however nothing amazing. Besides the price on the menus in zomato are not up to date.
We will go there again to try other stuff...

I have been there again and tried the pad thai... it was really good and the service was really good. As assumed within our first review, last time order wasn't our best choice.

We've come here regularly on and off over the years, and the Thai food here is consistently good with good service. I normally get takeaways from here, but it is good for dining in also, and doesn't break the bank. I have had the odd drink while waiting for my takeaway order as the atmosphere is very relaxed and catch up on a bit of magazine reading. Have had some great takeaway orders from here recently; recommended.

Went for dinner without a reservation at about 7 pm. Staff was friendly and arranged for a table in spite of being very busy. Chicken satay was good and portion size was reasonable. Mains included chicken drunken noodles, vegetarian red curry, a chicken stir fry dish and a duck stir fry. We asked for the dishes to be medium spicy and they were exactly that. Wanted the duck to be extra spicy and they provided some really spicy crushed thai chilly. Went well with the dish and it was easy to adjust the spiciness. Over all good dining experience. Had enough leftovers for next day's lunch for two.

I love this place we go quite a lot but my girlfriend hates it! I think the food is good service is good takeaway is good but for some reason my girlfriend who actually loves Thai hates the flavour from this restaurant so I rated it in the middle. I say yum others say yuk.
NZSteve
Food here is consistently good. I am a fan of the Pad Thai and Cashew Chicken. Prices are ok, about average for a suburb shop

Over all I recommend it to others

Went in on the opening night after the renovation . Food was great, service was great and the new interior is awesome. Great place to hang out with friend and family.

We go here regularly for takeaways, and are never disappointed. Recommended.

Used to really love this venue and have always had many takeaway meals from here. Dining in, well I hadn't done that for quite some time and after Saturday night will not go back to this venue for takeaway or dining!! Lady owner is lacking in any kind of good customer service skills. 4 of us dining and did not know that ONE BILL PER TABLE was their terms. We were like a pain in the butt to the owner not a customer and when I apologized that we were not aware I was told it's Saturday what do you expect?? I suggested they mention this on the phone when making a reservation and follow up with reiteration of that when the waitress/waiter comes to your table and that we would not return. The owner replied "OK". Hmmm, will definitely be heading to other Thai venues in Auckland. Very disappointing!!
Mayur Bhuta
We often used to dine here but have now stopped due to our recent experience. We went for lunch. The owner was serving. When we entered the place, no greeting nothing! It was cold so we asked her if she would not mind putting the heater on. She did but did not look happy about it. We ordered our dishes. I ordered Red Curry but asked to make it mild and asked for chilies on side. Her response "chilies very expensive in winter so you have to pay extra $2". I tell you this joint and this owner should not be in the food business. The food actually is not bad but their customer service is really poor. We made a decision never to go back.
Geraldine B
Food was nice, BUT The restaurant was very cold, especially by the windows. The service was practically non-existent. After the orders were taken and food served, no further contact with the staff, no "do you want another drink, no do you want desert, no do you want coffee" they just leaned against the wall and talked. Will not go back.
Lloyd Thomas
We last visited this restaurant three years ago and were disappointed then and it seems they are stuck in a time warp. The atmosphere like the decor is very tired and in parts dirty. The food was nice, but had no wow factor. The service was slow and very un-professional. The management need to have more staff training in the finer points of waitering, including some sort of uniforms. (dirty jeans and t-shirts don't cut-it ). Overall we both decided there are a lot better Thai restaurants in Auckland and probably will never go back to this one.
Danny Lim
A group of 8 of us dined in on a Saturday night. Everything from the atmosphere, staff and in particular the appetisers and mains were fantastic! My chicken green curry turned out to be just what I'd wanted, fresh and delicious. Highly recommend the 'Singha' and 'Chang' beers, perfect compliment to the type of food Thai Archer offers. I must say I have not enjoyed this level of satisfaction over an eatery for a long time. So, well done to the team at Thai Archer! Thanks also to our boss for shouting dinner!!
David Boshier
Nice place with good service, however we found the food to be average. The duck curry I had was very chewy and other than being hot lacked taste. We have been there in the past and it was better.

Might have just been a bad night, but there is plenty of choice in the area.

Maybe worth a stop if you can park at the door.

My friend and I went into Thai Archer- ordering vegetarian meals without fish/oyster/shrimp sauce. I had a red curry which was ok and she had noodles that definitely had fish in it. We advised the waiter and waitress whose English wasn't very good but they were pleasant. They went into the kitchen and confirmed that there was no fish. I tasted it and said yes there's definitely fish in there so we complained again. This time the owner marches up to us in front of all the guests and literally yells at us "What?" was her first word of contact. I replied- "there seems to be fish in this, could we replace the meal?". "No, there's no fish in there. You want another meal- then you pay for both". I replied "That's not fair- she's barely touched it and would like something else". She persisted with "No- you have to pay". We were almost prepared to walk out. I've never been treated so badly and what made it worse is that we were the centre of attention. All the other diners just stared bluntly at the owner.
Thai Fanatic Yumyum
Now I consider myself somewhat an expert in red curries, I have pretty much tried most around Auckland City in the search for the perfect red curry. Well now my journey has come to an end I have found the perfect curry at the archer! It contains a dazzling array of Thai spices that combine to produce a taste experience that exerts a sensory overload on my palate that leaves me in a state of apoplexy. I can not emphasize enough how good this dish is. It is sooo bl@@dy good!
RM
Arrived for our 7 pm booking and had to wait for 7 mins for someone to show us to our table. The takeaway, payment and arrivals are altogether! No one delegated to greet arriving guests. Another long wait to get a cork out of a bottle. Only 4 menus for 6 people. However the food arrived in a timely fashion once we got it ordered and everyone enjoyed their meal although my friend thought the duck portion was a little lacking in duck compared with elsewhere. Perhaps the service staff could smile a little too...always in an real rush and very sombre. The food was generally good but the service issue would have me choose other places in preference.
Vikz
Let me start on a good note....the service was prompt and friendly, the dining area is beautiful, the prices arent as pricey as Id expected and the chicken satay sticks were to die for! When my friend's duck came out the sauce was amazing - perfect flavours, crisp veges, tender meat.
SO, why the 'poor review'?? ......I ordered the steamed whole snapper in coconut sauce...it looked beautiful, again gorgeous flavours in the sauce...BUT...the whole thing was still covered in SCALES! And when I complained, they took it back to the kitchen to de-scale it. It came back semi-cold and ofcourse you cant de-scale a fish once its cooked and covered in sauce!! There were still scales everywhere and it made me feel really sick.
I regularly eat whole fish, if its on a menu I'll normally order it...Ive been to Thailand many times and probably (greedily) consume a fish every day, but NEVER have I been so disapointed! I felt so cheated because everything else had been so perfect!
They made me pay for half (I suppose this was OK because I had a good go at eating it) but the owner sent messages via the waiter, rather than coming out to apologise. If that had happened in my restaurant I wouldve been really embarassed and out offering a free drink at the very least! Its such a simple mistake to make, and a huge shame. Maybe I will go back, but I certainly would'nt recommend the fish!! (Go for the duck!!)
Gina Gate
I love Thai Archer everything I have had is always good. The only downside is the dry chicken satay sticks although still delist otherwise everything else is good. Always spend around 47 for 2 people for mains and entrees. BYO also
Christine Gunn
We often come here for takeaways and are never disappointed.
The food is full of flavour, reasonably priced, and always arrives promptly.
The best Thai food in the area for sure!
Crystal
Absolutely loved it.
Went there last night after the movies.
My parents had the curry puffs and chicken and prawn toast for their starters and loved them.
I hate spicy food so asked for a mild yellow curry... It was actually mild and amazingly tasty, one of the best in Auckland. My wife had thai Satay chicken and veggies - oh so tasty.
Can't rave enough. Will deffinately be going back.
A+++
Judi
table of 8 - put all the dishes in the middle of the table, BYO only $3 per bottle - food is always great and its in the entertainment book so we saved 25%. Not a noisy resturant because it is a converted house so only a few tables in each room. Rice was plentiful and they kept refilling your plate if you wanted.

Went there as part of a group of 14. Great food, subtle service. Only downside was limited amount of space for such a group. Looking forward to next visit.

We visited this restaurant last Saturday after reading a review and as we were going to the Stardome we needed somewhere close to One Tree Hill. We both had starters I chose the prawn and chicken mince toast which where excellent, my partner had the mixed entree and thought it was excellent. Both our mains were very good also. The service was very effecient without being to over the top. On the whole one of the best Thais in Auckland well done.

I am not a fan of hot or spicy food so was a bit hesitant when I went with friends. However I asked for mild dishes and am now a convert, the food was delicious, I will certainly go again.

Good value for money and you can take your own wine too.

On my quest to use as many vouchers in the entertainment book as possible I stopped by the Thai Archer for dinner on Saturday night. The restaurant seems to have been converted from a house and has dining in smaller rooms, but it isn't cramped. We ordered the Pad Thai and Gang Duck. After ordering, the Duck Krapao was brought out for the table next to us and I had serious meal envy as it looked and smelt delicious, I'll definitely try that next time. Fortunately both our dishes arrived promptly and looked great too. I'm not usually a fan of fruit in savoury dishes but the Gang Duck, a red curry with grapes and pineapples, was AMAZING and I have been converted. The curry had a good amount of roast duck meat which was lovely and tender. The Pad Thai was good but only had one prawn which was disappointing but on a second read of the menu it does prawn, not prawns so they didn't lie. There was a good variety in the vegetables and amount of chicken and the sauce flavours were lovely. While the carrot and lettuce garnish was a nice touch the dish was missing crushed peanuts and a lemon wedge (although I think they had already been mixed through). Fresh rice was brought around intermittently and topped up which I liked as the rice was always hot and fresh rather than a bowl sitting on the table going cold. Overall I was very impressed with the Thai Archer and look forward to going back.

We used to eat in and out of Thai Archer quite frequently a few years back, but there are so many good Thai a Restaurants scattered around the suburbs now that we haven't been in a couple of years. Friends had had a good takeaway experience there recently though and ordered takeaways for a small group of us. I thought it fairly average to be honest. While the Massaman curry was very good- tasty and plenty of beef, the rest tasted a bit same same and was very beige! ie not much colour in the way of fresh veges or garnishes. There was plenty of well cooked fragrant rice though. Maybe we just made bad choices, maybe the chef had a bad night but we won't be rushing back anytime soon
