Review Farang Cafe & Bistro - Auckland

Taylar W
I adore Farang with their simple but flavoursome food. The staff is excellent, warm, inviting and hospitable and the cafe is cosy and impressively kitschy with its retro decor. My favourite dishes are the pulled pork bun and the calamari salad. Very bite is fresh, vibrant, herbaceous and zingy with exotic flavours of Isaan. Highly recommended!

Dinner I had here was AMAZING!! I can't recommend this place enough. Especially loved the sweetie boy bun, Bangkok BBQ chicken and fish curry. My favourites were the soft shell crab and roti though! Good prices and great food.

Happened to stumble upon this cafe purely by chance and I'm glad I did. The restaurant has a nice atmosphere and the staff was very friendly. The best part was the food though. It was a lot tastier than I expected. I'll definitely be back again to try out the other items on the menu.

A little Vietnamese gem in the heart of Kingsland. It is a great place to go before or after a game at Eden Park, or even just for a regular dinner. They also do lunch menu which include the beef noodle soup which is not available for dinner.
June Lee
Great clean flavours, a well curated menu with excellently prepared dishes. The soft shell crab is a must!

Ver tasty food in a very well designed cafe-like restaurant.
Justin Kimberley
Great place for dinner. The food is incredibly tasty and authentic with great flavour combos. Have been there twice now and both times have been blown away with the food. Sweetie boy buns, eggplant, coconut vermicelli and duck curry are all amazing. Definitely check it out.

Stumbled upon this Thai gem a few years ago and have been a regular customer ever since! Delicious food and lovely service from all the team - past and present. Absolutely love the Pawpaw slaw Calamari, Beef Massamun and the Ginger Pork Noodle Soup from the Brunch menu. Thanks Farang!
Sandy Tseng
Had the ginger pork vermicelli and it was amazing. Staff was nice and friendly too.
Evan Lansdown
Such great, tasty and vibrant food! This is always our go to in Kingsland amomgst all the great options on offer. Make sure you book on a Friday night as the place is small and fills quickly - for a reason! You will bit be disappointed by the food or friendly staff - highly recommended

Have eaten here several times and it’s always out of this world! The ambiance is amazing, staff are great, and the food is INCREDIBLE. An absolute must for authentic Thai food in Auckland!!!
Iona Rodrigues
The BEST food I have tried in a long time! The chef knows what he is doing. The BBQ chicken was on point. The Lamb Shank was divine! Everything was finger licking good!

Love Farang, it's my pick for a light refreshing and flavour filled lunch, I have an addiction to the beef massaman lunch, for dinner, there are many great meals, all meals are loaded with flavour, there is a good serving of food on every plate and prices are very affordable. mish mash decor' that works with an interesting soundtrack that goes with the fusion style Thai street food!!! Friendly staff always greet you with a smile!!!
Lobster Mak
Great food, atmosphere was nice but a little bit dim. Make sure you try the mushroom bun it is amazing ! So yummy but has a little lunch of spice.
Paul Montague
We shared 4 small plates between the two of us and we're keen on heading back to sample the mains next time. Super flavourful, no frills Thai, with excellent service.
Arun Theja
Nice place for a casual lunch.

Very authentic style food. Extremely friendly and great coffee. Loved the unique food style and cosy yet open space atmosphere with the conservatory style area.

Cutest Thai place ever!!! Beautiful flavours! Modern twist. Not big portions but veeeery very tasty! The staff are the best as well. We’ve been coming here for years and they’re all always so friendly.

Nice little restaunrant. Once you enter it feels like a home kitchen. Food we ordered the papaya salad, Duck, Pork belly sliders and the chicken(think it was sth similar to a curry). The food lacked depth in flavour but overall pleasant dinning experience.

The food here is great! It's a small restaurant so make a reservation if you're planning to come on the weekend. The staff are friendly, service is great. The portion sizes aren't huge, but good value with zomato gold.

"If you walked by this place would u have come in?" (Friend, 2019) - this place blew us away WITH EVERY DISH. It was a conveyor belt of happiness. Came for a birthday - stayed for the food. Pork-anything is a wow. Also the eggplant frits was a pleasant 9.9/10. Seriously come here.
Dominika Janakova
So good, felt like we were invited into someone's home and they made their best home cooked food! Highly recommended and can't wait to come back

Cute little place, only had a few tables but it did not disappoint. We had the green curry, squid and pork belly, BBQ chicken and roti with peanut sauce. Every dish was really nice, makes you wanna order a bowl of rice and eat nonstop kind of nice. The green curry was a bit watery though, still tasted yum so it’s all good. The food here is definitely on the pricier side though, the portion service and ambience does not match the price you pay at all.

Food 8/10 Service 6/10 Ambience 7/10

Have been there twice for dinner. Both occasions, meals were shared among between 2-4 people and we were very happy with our meals. Staff are friendly and helpful. We have made it our favourite local restaurant A++++

There was hardly any crabs very tiny portions. The chicken was dry inside but the sauce was nice. Curry was extremely watery and not thick.

Overall wasn’t that great of an experience.

Service: 3/5
Environment: 3/5
Presentation: 3/5
Food Quality: 2/5
Food Quantity: 3/5
Price per person: $20-$40

3/5 Taste
3.5/5 Display
1/5 Quantity
2.5/5 Customer Service

Thai Restaurant in Kingsland.

Bit of a mix experience with Farang.

To start off, Chicken was great, portion, flavour, texture was really decent. The sauce that came with it was amazing.
Everything else we ordered was not right.

Soft shell crabs, texture, flavour was average but portion and plating was horrible. Massive piece of cabbage sitting on the plate and seemed like they didnt even use a full crab for a meal valued at $28.

Fish of the day, oh boy, where do I start.
Grilled fish served with green curry. They gave us 1 and 1/4 of small dry bland pieces of fish on top of runny bland green curry. Thai curry should not be runny it was just not right.
And these meals are not served with rice either.

4 main menu between 2 guy was not enough.
LuNa The TuNa
I can't believe a 4.3score restaurant can make a dish like this..... Could anyone tell me why this dish deserve $28 ???because that whole cabbage leaf?
Service is nice and friendly 5/5
but food not even worth 2/5....

Came here for dinner with kids. Ordered pork ribs (on special), bbq chicken, pork noodles and chicken golek from small plates. Every item well presented and delicious. We all ate with a big smile on our faces. We couldn't stop complimenting how much we enjoyed our meal. Staff is friendly and courteous. I am surprised I didn't have too stand in queue to get to get a table at this restaurant.. Must try for food lovers

[Awful customer service] Visited today for dinner. Such an unpleasant experience. The food is great but the lady at the front desk was not so friendly, somehow rude. When we order she was already impolite. At the time we pay our bill, she was so friendly to the previous customer ( who happens to be a white man) but feels like being forced to serve us (happens to be Asian). We both feel unequally treated and it’s my first time feel the racial discrimination here in New Zealand. Won’t recommend. So disappointed. So funny that the name Farang in Thai means Foreigner.

Visited today for dinner. Went there with my GF. Awesome dishes TBH. But the lady at casher made us feel unwelcomed. There was a white guy paying before us and she warmly talked to him. But when we were paying, she had a very different attitude. There was a huge contrast and my GF said she also felt it. I think everyone should be treated equally. Overall, not a good experience.

We went here for celebrating Denny Setiawan birthday, plan to use zomato gold however just now that it’s not applied for their lunch menu.. most of the menus serves for dinner.. so i recommend better to go here for dinner.. we ordered crispy calamari and ginger pork noodle soup.. crispy calamari more like salad with mango and carrot, is refreshing.. ginger pork noodle is nice even though the portion is quite small

Really liked the food here. Love the small menu. Usually a good indicator that each dish has that little bit more love put in. Flavors were on point, prices good too. We will be back.

This is not boring Thai. The menu is familiar enough to be approachable but different enough not to be boring. The Sweetie Buns were very yummy and the satay sauce with the roti was spicier than usual, which is a good thing. Master 9, a Thai enthusiast, was very happy.

The night food is soooo good~
We love the small plates to share. 2 Gold member can get 2 dishes for free! What a bargain!
The crispy pork bun and stew beef is very nice.
Cocktail is also great to try.
Dont forget to take good pics!

I was in the Kingsland neighborhood, so decided to check for recommendation. Farang popped up, that too with a Gold 1+1 on food, so decided to try it. Turns out, they don't do 1+1 on lunch - only for dinner; something I wish is informed beforehand. This was my first time trying a Gold partner restaurant, so not a good start anyway. Felt it would look rude to head out after hearing about Gold bit, so stayed back. Interiors was interesting and quirky, lunch menu was nice but limited. Chicken wings were impressive - not oily and crunchy, noodle bowl was alright; ditto for the smoothie. Quantity could have been more than what was offered. Maybe worth one visit if in their neighborhood.

Food here tastes good and they are definitely unique dishes you won't find in other restaurants.
However, that's where the positive ends. It's quite overpriced and the quantity is definitely too small for some of their dishes. The Calamari with Paw Paw slaw on their lunch menu had four measly square pieces of squid and half a serving of slaw.
The waitress was initially quite rude, (and even more rude once we asked about the Zomato Gold offer). But she was somehow friendlier when we were leaving. Also note that they do not accept Zomato Gold offers for lunch although Zomato states that it's "any time, any dish" for all their partner restaurants.
We will probably not be returning for lunch, but will come check out dinner since there seems to be so many good reviews.

Kingsland really is a hotbed of great eating places; and Farang doesn't disappoint, serving up some yummy thai food. We had a grabone voucher for a sharing plate, which came with noodles, paw paw salad, fried chicken wings and slices of pork. The food was packed with flavour and left you wanting to try more on the menu. The restaurant itself is small and pretty basic, but the price point is very competitive and the service was very friendly.
Pritika Sharma (Veg)
Friendly staff. the 3 vege items on menu are all tasty (spring roll, eggplant dish and Hawke style tofu.... all very nice and flavoursome!)
But, I am a vegetarian and a big eater. Portions too small for me and very expensive.
we ordered 6 dishes between 4 people. No left overs!
Rating low because of price.
Staff, food, service and Ambience are all really great.
Dani
Such a cozy little Thai restaurant and very authentic in their craft. I ordered the lamb shank and it was cooked to perfection-falling off the bone, everything was just packed with heaps of flavor. Really friendly staff too. Would definitely come back for more!
Lee
This place is so authentic and delicious! We had been once previously and had a great experience then too. We ate the calamari and pork belly, pork shoulder noodles and lamb shank. The flavours were absolutely amazing and portion sizes were perfect.

An email I sent the team at Farang. I booked out the whole restaurant for 25 people for dinner 9/12/17:

Just wanted to express my gratitude for such a lovely night. The food and service was amazing and my family and friends were all so full but talking about how much they loved everything. Really appreciate you making my birthday celebration perfect and would definitely not hesitate to recommend you to anyone I know trying to find somewhere to have a function of a similar size. I also think you’ve got some new fans and will probably be seeing more of my family and friends popping in for lunches or dinners. Also really appreciate the way you accommodated our children and babies so well, they also loved it. I asked my niece (10 years old) if she liked the food and she said “it’s really good - too good!” haha - so there you go, high praise all around.
Olivia
Delicious Thai style food! I had the fish lemongrass curry, it was so aromatic and worth the money I think. A nice treat! Lovely outdoor lounge area too, very atmospheric on a balmy evening.

My mum and I came here for lunch on a lovely sunny Friday. We ordered cocktails which were lovely and refreshing. Mum had the Paw Paw Slaw Calamari and I had the Beef Massamun Roti. The slaw was amazing with a decent amount of calamari. The beef just fell amount and cooked perfectly. The roti was a little burnt but suited the beef. Waitress was lovely and knowledgeable.

Came here on my birthday with my girlfriend, and Farang truly made the day for me with amazing food. This place is worth more than 5 stars!

We were worried that we had not made a booking for dinner but were lucky they had seats available, but I will definitely book next time. The staff was very attentive and welcoming.

We had 1. Bong’s special chicken golek which was tender, juicy chicken with coconuty red sauce. This dish went so well together with the cucumber salad next to it.
2. Special pork belly was mind-blowing! Green apple, pomegranate salad also went so well with the dish. I’m drooling from just thinking about it. We’ll definitely look forward to other specials next time :)
Free range meat is definitely the way to go! Incredibly fresh! Well done!
3. Sandy’s fish green curry had the ingredients cooked to perfection, nothing overcooked! I’m sensitive to seafood smell but had no problem with the fish they served. One of the best green curries I’ve had!
4. We also had jasmine rice and (roti - recommend)
5. Le Peh Sunrise mocktail was a little sweet for me, but the Mojito was superrrb.

All this came to $77 for the two of us and we were too full. We did not regret a cent of the food. Thank you for making our day :)

Unpretentious little restaurant cooked up one of the best Thai meals we had for a while. We had Pumpkin chips, Grilled Eggplant, Fish Curry, Duck Curry, Slow Cooked Pork noodles and some roti as a side. Every dish was packed with flavour and we had a hard time deciding which one was the best cos all of them were just so perfect! We will be back trying more dishes soon! 😊

Great fresh tasting food, good price and lovely friendly service. Its been reliable every time and is worth braving kingsland for - plenty of chili in the dishes

Was recommended by a friend to try this place and it didn’t disappoint. The food was amazing, service was nice and friendly. Will be returning for sure!

Not Kiwi Thai, Real Thai…

Love, love, love this wee place in Kingsland. After trying it on Uber Eats a few times (quite a few actually) we quickly became addicted, so visited with a team of colleagues one Friday night.
For those who prefer their Thai food swimming in coconut cream, laden with sugar and with the colour of the curry providing the only variety, then Farang is not for you. This is the real deal, or as their website proclaims “sweet, salty, sour, hot”. And boy do they get the balance of flavours bang on.
Stand out favourites are listed from the menu below. The pork belly buns I dream about in between visits, the richness of the pork cut perfectly by the pickle and the sauce. The green curry is like no other I have experienced in NZ, it is fresh and light with perfectly cooked opaque fish. And the moreish duck with lychees is again balanced brilliantly with a tangy nahm jim dressing.

- SWEETIE BOY BUNS, sticky pork belly in fried soft buns with pickle cabbage, kale & Bong’s special sauce
SANDY’s FISH GREEN CURRY , pan-fried fish of the day, house-made green curry, lemongrass, kaffir lime & seasonal vegetables
TWICE COOKED DUCK LEG, lychee, peanut, sesame, fresh herbs and spicy nahm jim dressing

Perhaps our favourite thing is not on the food or drinks menu, it is one of the owners Walee who runs front of house. She is just the sweetest host; as she flits from table to table always smiling, and always ready to help with recommendations.

We are back next week for some more of those buns and perhaps a couple of new dishes

Alas
Service was great. Food was pretty good. Price would be about $90 entree, main and a beer for two people. Loved the chargrilled chicken and pork belly with squid. Parking in kingsland is painful but worth it. I wished they used more fish sauce, palm sugar, limes and chillies to give that thai hit.

Very very Happy. After a long day at work we wanted a quiet intimate setting for 3 people to have a wine and a few yummy dishes.

Suprisingly they catered for Vegans too which impressed me even more as my partner and I are Vegan.

Such hearty portion sizes too in the Vegan Dishes that we were so happy with.

We had the Hawker Style Soy Bean Paste Tofu which had so much Tofu which was suprising and we loved it. The dish was tasty and we both left very satisfied.

We also had Eggplant Frites and Roti with peanut sauce which we shared with my aunt.

My aunt had a lovely Bangkok BBQ chicken. She loved it and we cant wait to return.

Table service was polite , friendly and professional.

Thankyou

I'd been meaning to come here but never did, I'm sad it took me so long to because it really is a gem in Auckland! We have come often since that time, and I cannot fault the place 😊 Bong & Co are amazing at what they do, the service is so good they make you feel like family and that's part of the reason we keep coming back, that and the food..the food..oh gosh..it's good! We get the same thing each time it's that good! - the eggplant with mushrooms, spicy tofu, eggplant frites, fresh spring rolls, and roti with satay sauce. Each dish is jam packed full of flavour and well balanced, especially the eggplant. Eggplant frites crispy outside soft inside, also order any one of the desserts they are all that good! A nice intimate setting inside and out with heaters and pull down covers for winter, cheers guys for sharing your food with us!
Tina Yu
Amazing breakfast omelette and amazing dinner menu. The service and atmosphere here is super welcoming and charming. You have to try the duck curry it's actually the best I've had. And I've eaten alot :D
Pureland.pearl
My personal opinion just an average Thai restaurant I don't know why this one has such high score. Food is okay but nothing special and the price is not cheap for this quality of food.

I came here for the ginger pork noodle soup and so glad I did! It had generous servings of soft pork and the soup was so flavourful! I also got a juice to start my day healthy.

Service was lovely and decor simple and cosy.

WOULD NEVER GO BACK AGAIN! Worst Customer service ever. The waitress was rude and impatient, no smile. It felt like we were doing them a favour by dining with them. We went as a group and not one of us want to go back after being treated like this by not just the waitress but the counter lady as well.
Paige Venter
I loved this place! Came here with a friend on a Tuesday night, they had the outdoor heater keeping everyone very warm for a cold winter night. We ordered a glass of wine each and a main, the total came to 70 dollars - this is great value considering the food was filling and fresh. I ordered the roast pork noodle and it tasted authentic and healthy! I would recommend this place to anyone who is keen for an affordable and tasty meal.
Sasha McCormick
Love this place! Never even knew it existed until a friend suggested we eat here for dinner, and I was pleasantly surprised. The premises itself is quite small, but this adds to its ambiance. Having to go through the kitchen to get to the bathroom totally reminded me of some of the restaurants you would find in Thailand, where anything goes!

The food itself was really fantastic, I had the lamb shank and it was the closest in taste I have ever come to in Auckland to the real deal massaman you get in Thailand. Can't wait to have a meal here again!
Yoana S
My favorite Thai restaurant in Auckland!
Took my mom here for her birthday dinner. We ordered the sweetie boy buns, beef larb, duck leg, fish green curry, the shredded pork noodle and the shaking curry soft shell crabs. The buns were the highlight of the show, what a great start to dinner. The pork belly was succulent crispy, every mouthful was a delight. The duckleg was great, and it went really well with the lychee salad, the combination of flavour was spot on, i couldnt fault it. The fish in the green curry was pan fried perfectly and it held its texture. The soft shell crab was awesome. I aways order this one every time i come here, but somehow i found last night's crab dish a little different to the previous ones we had... it had less curry in it. Im not too fussed about it, it still hit the spot for me. The shredded pork noodle is the most ordinary dish out of everything else we ordered last night. It was good but i've had better. Then i secretly ordered the roti stack and asked for a candle for mom. They have candle! I was impressed. And it didnt end there. I got even more impressed with the depth of flavour in the roti stack. The roti flavour mixed with condensed milk, chocolate sauce, coconut ice cream, mango and pear just works wonder, they go well together.
So pleased with the food, the service and the atmosphere. Mom was so happy, thank you for making her birthday a perfect celebration. We'll definitely be back.
Rob
Got a mixture of dishes to share and try. All the suggestions on zomato were excellent and we based our choices from it. The soft shell crab was my favorite from memory
Jessica McCormack
Everything we ate was amazing. Great flavours and good value for money. The food came out fast. My favourite was probably the belly pork buns.
Would definitely come again (though probably take the train/bus as parking in kingsland is a mission).
Gina
We went there last weekend, a group of us, food is ok, but customer service is the worst one we have come across, waitress, showed us the cold face, no smile, also impatient. Also when we paid our bill, the cashier is also not good at all, the way she spoke is horrible. WE WOULD NEVER GO BACK AGAIN. YOU NEED TO IMPROVE YOUR CUSTOMER SERVICE

Fresh af. Tasty Thai inspired food, healthy juices, coffee and beer. I love everything about this place. Must tries: fresh juices and the pork bun!

Ordered via UBER Eats on a whim and it's safe to say this is some of the best food I've had in a long time. Each dish was packed full of flavour!! Will definitely order again!
Kesh.d
Great food, great service ... thanks for the extra non spicy Larb for my white friend I bought along with me :) .... ordered the pork belly buns, raw mince larb, bang bang crispy squid pork belly dish.
FJ
Super happy to have tried this place. Picked it due to its reviews on here. Really cute place, lovely staff and tasty food. We had prawns, rice paper rolls, Bong chicken and pork belly and squid. All so tasty and the papaya salad that came with the squid was amazing. Can't wait to tell others about this little gem 😊😊

Nestled in the heart of Kingsland is where you’ll find this small family run café. With only a few tables inside and out in the courtyard tables fill up fast, but they do have some ‘bar’ seats down the side of the building if your just after a quick bite. The service is really good and the young lady that was taking care of everyone did a great job. Although they were quiet busy she served everyone promptly, checked up on meals and even topped up water.

The menu is short - aiming for quality rather than quantity. We ordered the Grilled ginger eggplant, Warmy rice rolls and the Bang bang chilli squid (vegetarian option). The eggplant was really tasty and the ginger was present in the sauce but not overpowering. This dish worked well with a side of rice. The Bang Bang Crispy chili squid (vegetarian option) was a little disappointing as there was no substitute for the squid, we would have loved some crispy tofu instead. I'm sure this dish would be amazing with the squid! It ended up being just a salad for us but was quite tasty and had a nice hit of chili that was quiet refreshing. The Warmy rice rolls were really fresh and the dipping sauce worked well to add some extra flavour.

If your after fresh thai food and good service give this place a go. Next time I’ll be trying the roti stack and sweetie boy buns, as I had food envy when these were served to the tables nearby.

We went to this Kingsland eatery when it first opened last year, and since then it's become a house favourite for its authentic flavours and bang-for-your-buck goodness. This time the seven of us were seated in the sunny porch, patio heaters keeping the wintery chill at bay. The dishes came out steadily, albeit a bit on the slow side — some of us had to make a start before the food got cold or soggy.

We passed the time chatting about the Animal Myers Briggs test (Mel is a dolphin!) and wondering if boxers came from… well, boxing people (turns out they do). Everyone ‘oohed' and ‘ahhed' at Emilie's pancake dish — a freshly fried roti stuffed with an over-easy egg, bananas and bacon, slathered with plenty of condensed milk and maple syrup on the side. We could eat this for breakfast, lunch AND dinner. Any day. Now even. Watch out world, little Farang is on a roll and showing no signs of stopping.

Check out our individual comments here: husk.co.nz/farang-june-2016

Hands down one of the best food place in Auckland! I think i am in love!!! Im still here sitting in farang and i am already thinking of my next visit!

We came here today to celebrate my best friend's birthday! I have been dying to try this place for a while... i was supper excited to come here!

Anyway today we ordered the sweetie boy buns, bang bang crispy chili belly squid, special chicken golek, and shaking curry soft shell crab with some jasmine rice and sticky rice.

I was seriously impressed with everything! The boy buns were to die for! The pork was succulent and crispy! Although I would probably prefer the bao to be steamed instead of fried, but they were still delicious! I enjoyed the garlic chilli under the pork belly.

The bang bang chilli belly squid were probably the star of the show for me! I was so impressed witj their nahm jim! Was that crab paste I could taste?? Love the som tum!

The chicken golek was also pretty delicious... i was not expecting the coconut cream to shine through... actually i was not expecting the coconut flavour to be there at all... but the combination works.

The soft shell crab dish was also to die for! I thoroughly enjoyed the eggs in the curry sauce!! The crabs were so crispy and tasty!

We also had the roti stacks to finish the evening! The crispy roti and the creamy condensed milk!! i felt like i died and went to food heaven!

Thank you farang for the beautiful food! Awesome service and for letting us hang around and chat for ages ❤️ i am looking forward to my next visit!!

I always go to Farang and have always had an awesome time. Have been for brunch, lunch and dinner a number of times. Easily one of the best Thai places in Auckland because it's so different. The food is amazing - very fresh and tasty. The service is exceptional. The chefs always give you a big hello from the kitchen and the waitress is lovely and helpful. The sweetie boy buns are delicious and the pork belly amazing. Everyone I have taken here loves it!

Amazing little gem in Kingsland, walked past and didn't see it at first! Inside is very small, with only three tables and an open kitchen at the back. Outside is covered, cosy and intimate (ideal for a date). Staff were attentive, and helpful for one of my friends with strict food allergies, they got the chef from the kitchen to explain the menu to her, which was great.

I ordered the pork belly buns, chicken golek and roti. The pork belly buns were seriously amazing! I think they deep-fry Chinese bao buns, which made it so crispy on the outside. They were also filled generously with 2 slabs of crispy pork belly and a tangy, strong Thai sauce. Probably my favourite pork belly buns I've ever had now! Must try if you go here. The chicken golek was also very good, tender with a crispy skin and a spicy, sweet Thai salad on the side. The roti was flaky and soft with an amazing peanut sauce to dip it in. I loved every dish I ordered and also got to try my friends ginger eggplant dish which was incredible!! Best eggplant dish I've had, the eggplant was grilled to perfection and was full of flavour.

Absolutely loved this place, I will definitely be back!

Love Farang! It's a pity not more people know about it. Absolutely great Vietnamese/cafe style food. Every dish is like a homemade (but still high quality) dish. The service is always friendly and helpful. I also love the vibe of the place.. cool music and a relaxed atmosphere.
Have never had a bad meal or experience there.
Pro-tip: order the Tom Yum cocktail. And ask for it spicy. Delicious.

Big Fan of Farang cafe! I love every single dish they serve! We came here on Wednesday night, ordered BBQ chicken, rice roll, as well as roti dessert~ We all love it!
I truly recommend this cafe to all of u~ great food with excellence service!

Very delicious food. Absolute killer combo of flavours yum yum. The slow cooked beef ribs were amazing. Would definitely go back there again.

Small cosy place and delicious food! Farang is a small little cafe during the day and a nice little cosy restaurent at night. I came here for dinner on a saturday; not wanting to go somewhere big and busy. The service was great! The menu is small so u dont get too carried away with options, which i really liked.
We ordered the squid and pork belly salad and the crispy larb to start. Then we got the quater chicken and the slowcooked curried lamshank. Everything was perfect! The pork belly was cooked to perfection. The meat was still juicy and the skin was crispy. The curry lambshank was delicious, and the potatoes came with it was yummy. The whole experience was perfect! Will defitnately come back!

Quirky little cafe i am in love with the troll dolls!! great little fresh menu for lunch and friendly owners . I had a chicken mince omlette great mix of fresh herbs ,sweet sauce and spicy sriracha , really tasty light lunch dish and my boyfriend had the runny eggs and chicken mince with a hunk of toast to lap up the egg. All prepared freshly and with yummy coffee too we will definitely be back great spot

My friend and I just had dinner here. Being foodies and dining out on the rare occasion, it is nice to be able to do so without being judged for ordering a selection of dishes. Our waitress was incredibly rude and passed on judging looks as we read out what we wanted. She even went so far as to say we were ordering too much for two people. It made my friend and I feel uncomfortable and the whole experience become very unenjoyable. On top of this the food was average at best. Speedy out of the kitchen but we won't be going back or recommending to others.

Went last night on the recommendation of a work colleague and am so pleased that we went. We went in a group so had the opportunity to try a number of dishes. The standouts being the pork buns, BBQ chicken, soft shell crab and short rib beef. The menu is not your standard Thai, more Thai fusion and the flavours sublime. The only criticism would be the time we had to wait for service, and having to request the menus for dessert, but our wait staff greeted us with a smile and we
will most certainly be back.

A cute little place you could easily walk past if you you weren't looking out for it. We were met at the door and welcomed into the restaurant like we were being welcomed into someone's home, so warm and genuine.

The restaurant has an awkward and unique layout with multi tiers of seating all quite close together but it adds to its charm.

For food we ordered 2 entrees, the Bang, Bang crispy belly squid was an absolute stunner. This was crispy pork belly and calamari served with a beautiful Asian styled salad that hit all the right notes, spicy, sweet, acidic which cut through the pork belly and fried calamari well.

Bongs Special Chicken Golek was the other entree which again brought moans of appreciation from both of us. Very tender chicken pieces marinated and a spicy yet smooth mix and served with a pickled cucumber salad. Both entrees were brilliant!

For the main we shared The Shaking Curry Soft Shell Crab. I must admit, after the entrees, this dish was a bit of a let down, this dish wasn't as refined as the entrees, it was nice enough but missing a bit of punch and finesse.

Just as impressive for us was the red wine selection, Mills Reef and Te Kahu were on selection for the same price you'd pay for a house red, amazing!

We're revisiting tomorrow to test out their brunch menu, so yup, this place gets a serious tick of approval from me!

Could not recommend any more. Incredible food and fabulous service.
BYO and easily the best Thai in Auckland. Small amounts of seating so you need to book.

Farang is hands down the tastiest most authentic Thai food in central Auckland. Have enjoyed some magnificent feasts many times. So delish can't fault them. Service is great. Food is fresh, clean and tasty. Lots of fresh Thai herbs, good heat.
If you love Thai food get some Farang. I have eaten my way through the whole menu. Friendly cool owners who always greet with a smile and extra fresh chilli 🌶

Thai food but not as you know it. We eat here all the time and the staff as awesome as the food, good value too! Its a hot dinner spot but its also great for lunch, masaman roti is next level.

The best thing thats happened to Kingsland in a very long time. I have been 3 times and absolutely adore it. The food is amazing! fantastic fresh ingredients & flavouring. A real treat for city fringe.

7/9/17 - Okay make this 10 times now - The food is hands down some of the tastiest in this city. Cheers guys - keep doing what you're doing!

Delicious contemporary Thai food in an eclectic setting with fast and friendly service.
Offers a wonderful Sunday brunch menu, especially if you're up for something other than eggs bene.
The rice noodles come in a vegetarian option with black fungus and tofu. It's like Pad Thai -but fresher, less greasy and not as sweet.
The pork belly is flavourful and perfectly cooked and comes with a side of veggies to balance out the decadence.
All I can say is holy shit. This place has the most spectacular tasting food I've had in a very long time. Simple yet so many spices and so tasty. Would highly recommend and although I'm leaving auckland in 3 days, this is a must visit for me before I go!!!

Came here for dinner. First plate was the Chicken Golek which was delicious. Second up the Sweetie Boy Buns - not much going on there. Needed some kind of sauce. Next the Soft Shell Crab - tasted a bit fishy. Lastly the Ginger Eggplant - tasty dish. Staff were very nice and food came out very quickly .

Had a good lunch experience at Farang. The pork belly was a winner. Chicken Maryland was good too and I will try out the massuman beef next time. Definitely worth few visits.
The menu is delicious! Love the beef curry and pork belly dishes. The owners are very nice. We have become regulars to this place :)
Reluctant to review this place as I enjoy always finding a table.

This place is amazing. Super quirky decor with awesome, friendly staff. Have eaten here for lunch and dinner and both are delish. The lunch menu is nice and light - i love the pork noodle soup and fresh spring rolls. Dinner is my favourite. The pork sweetie boy buns are a dream, as are pretty much all of the mains (yes I've tried them all) . Their roti are light and flakey and come with satay sauce. I'm also a fan of the Virgin mojitos which are packed with fresh mint. This place is definetly one of my top picks in Kingsland!

SO GOOD. I came here with my partner and his mother awhile ago, and we had such a good time! The waitresses were so lovely even though I was probably annoying with my intolerance to anything spicy haha! Food was so incredible that my partner (who's a chef) went and personally thanked the chefs on our way out, and the cocktail I had (can't remember the name) was amazing. Will 100% be back again soon!

Had dinner as a group of four friends here. Had a very good time. Great ambience and awesome food! Service was attentive and extremely friendly. We shared starters of Sweetie Boy Buns, Soft Shell Crab, and a special of prawn. Great flavours across all three dishes. Main dishes enjoyed were BBQ Half Chicken, Shaking Cashew Duck and Vegetarian Green Curry. The BBQ Chicken came with a to die for chilli sauce. This ran out and I was asked if I wanted more sauce, happily accepted! The duck and vegetarian dishes were flavoursome and enjoyed by all. For desert the beautiful Banana Spring Roll was stunning with the chilli chocolate sauce a great addition! A freshly made virgin mohito was a pleasant surprise to find on the drinks menu. Overall an excellent find in Kingsland, I will definitely return!

This place is amazing, fantastic food and service, very friendly staff and such fresh flavours and produce. We've been three times now and it's always a memorable experience. Love how spicy the food is and the interesting additions like ginkgo nuts. Really beautiful guys!

We checked out this new Thai place in Kingsland last night. The place is cute and service friendly. Their food was fresh and tasty and delicious! We had pork buns and squid for starters and then chicken, lamb shank and beef curry for mains.

Visited Farang yesterday with friend. After hearing good reviews from family members.
Farang is worth visiting got the pulled pork on Roti it was delicious!! the flavours are awesome and compliments the whole dish. My friend got the Paw Paw salad and that was also delicious, with lots of herbs and it was surprisingly hot too it but it really went well. Also got fries I don't know why, when I wanted more Roti however the fries were.

Overall what made the experience enjoyable was the excellent friendly service.

Can't wait to visit again.

I had the pleasure to go to Farang Cafe last week and I absolute loved it! Nice atmosphere, very friendly staff and the pork belly with paw paw slaw was delicious! I'm definitely coming back!!!

Here on the busy Kingsland strip lies an awesome new thai joint! Definitely not your typical thai - it's much better!!

The menu is small but promising. You'll have a hard time deciding what to try because it all sounds delicious. We ended up grabbing the sweetie boy buns - which was a fried man tao bun w sticky and spicy pork inside, the Bangkok BBQ chicken, the slow cooked lamb shank in a massaman curry and 2x roti w peanut sauce and the mango panna cotta. I had no idea what to expect but boy was I surprised. The flavours were absolutely beautiful and I enjoyed every single meal. Highlights were definitely the buns and the lamb shank!!

The service was beyond amazing. The lady who served us was knowledgeable and helpful and asked us what we liked and disliked and then recommended the dishes we got. She didn't mind any of the questions and checked on us often enough to ensure a good meal but not often enough to be bothersome. She also did a good job on ensuring our water was always topped up.

All in all, it was a great meal and I do look forward to coming back to try your new menu in a couple of months. :-) thanks for an awesome meal!

We popped in here for lunch ... Almost missed seeing it but after reading the menu on the window it was too intriguing to just walk past.... We got one breakfast option... Eggs, bacon with homemade rosti small serving but very nice although would rather not have pepper put on my eggs... 2 lunch options was a pleasant surprise the pork roti was the nicest... Salads are yum and fresh... The service was friendly too...We walked away very happy.

I've heard many great things about this little cafe/restaurant and I'm glad that I've step my foot into their door.

I've ordered Egg Benedict with bacon and a 'green kick' from Walee's Juicer menu (spinach, kale, mint, cucumber, ginger, lemon & apple). I was seriously tosing between an egg bene and Paw Paw Slaw with pork belly. My egg bene was in good proportion for me but if you have a bigger appetite I recommend you to try their ginger pork noodle soup or their big breakfast. I did find the spinach in the bene quite salty thankful that I didn't sprinkle any salt at the start. There are a couple of suggestions; 1. don't put crack black pepper on the eggs leave that decision with the customer. 2. State the level of spiciness on the menu so no surprises.

Overall I did enjoyed the service especially the juice. Their Asian fusion menu looks very intriguing, so I'll return again for the dinner menu, let's see if its going to be a better experience next time around.

This little place is seriously tasty.

We had a mixture of small plates, including:
- paw paw slaw
- rice paper rolls
- sweetie boy buns
- Bang bang crispy squid

Seriously, all of these dishes were awesome! The sweeties boys buns were flippin amazing too. The vibe of this place is totally chill and I LOVE that it is BYO. Service was super friendly but not OTT.

Nice work Farang, keep up the great work!

Will be coming back here for sure!
Two Dark Coffees
Not my typical choice but not your typical Thai.

Bringing the authentic flavours of Thailand to Auckland, Farang sets itself apart from others in the competing industry.

The menu is dotted with fresh ginger, zesty lemongrass, and hot chilli.

One afternoon trade in your boring club sandwich for a fresh Spring roll or a pulled pork roti.

With a brunch, lunch and dinner menu Farang is your healthy alternative to a lot of the rubbish out there.

With alfresco dinning, this place is perfect for warm afternoons or a late night bite.

Prices are really reasonable and service is friendly.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: I remember feeling shocked a few months ago when La Bottega disappeared (I LOVED the pastries), but was intrigued when the dark, mysterious Farang appeared. With a cool interior and a wall filled with fresh herbs, I was already feeling comfortable.

FOOD: the paw paw slaw with calamari was delicious and packed full of flavours. I loved the generous amount of herbs which perfectly complemented the textures of the sprouts and carrot. The calamari was well seasoned and not too chewy. The dish did slightly err on the hot hot side of the chilli scale, but this made for a satisfying experience!

COFFEE: my flat white was perfectly executed.

SERVICE: our waitress Lyn was fantastic. Very welcoming and engaging. She asked for feedback at the end too which left a great impression with us.

I am totally intrigued by the dinner menu and want to try the fish dishes. The covered patio area would be perfect for a dinner group. Ideas for my next birthday methinks..!
F is a great little spot and I'm so glad I popped in for lunch today. It's quirky, fun and the staff are v. cool. We ordered the pulled pork roti, crispy calamari paw paw slaw, an iced coffee and trim fw. All delicious. Not if you like a bit of heat then F's for you. It's great to know too that we can book for a big group. Can't wait to try the dinner menu.

light farang...

its a nice little place in kingsland.. Went here for lunch to try the ginger soup which had a nice tasty stock and tender meats, simply beautiful and not too big like what ussually other thai restaurant will serve you, the chicken tenders are nice and moist too, squid salad with a nice dressing and texture, though it didnt hit the mark with the roti with pork as they buy it outside and the pork is dry. The juices were also pulpy its quite hard to drink.. The service is good however saw the waitress reading magazine, she was still really nice explaining everything and attentive with what we needed.

Of all the thai restaurant I enjoy the simplicity but added care they put onto the food with right seasoning and balance with the sauces that i did not need rice to finish my lunch.

Light satisfying lunch, I will be back!

Three friends and I went for dinner tonight. Lovely atmosphere sitting in the enclosed outside area with heaters and cushions and some pretty greenery. Service was a tad slow to begin with, but nothing major. By golly the food is beautiful. Its a small concise menu, but theres nothing wrong with that when everything is top notch.
We ordered the sticky pork buns, rice paper rolls, roti with satay sauce, duck curry, fish of the day and a couple of crispy chilli squid. The pork buns were stand out! and the chilli squid not far behind. The roti with satay sauce was also to die for. It was all good, hot, delicious, and well presented. The wine menu is pretty decent too. Our only regret was we didn't leave room for desert, which we had planned on doing as that desert menu looks as kick asse as the rest of their food. Next time i'll try and leave a gap. This is far and away the best modern delicious thai food i've found, and Farangs the jewel in the crown of Kingsland. I'll be back and I can't wait!

This place is bloody delicious. My bf and I went here the other night for dinner after reading a good review in the Herald and craving some good, honest Thai food. We were not let down. The pork belly buns were like crack, so so tasty! They were like little sliders and the bread was crunchy, almost sweet and the pork belly perfect! My bf had to order another round of them because they were just so good. The calamari was good but not as great as the pork buns, the pork buns really took the cake.
The duck curry was delicious and we ordered some roti to dip into it, great combo. The peanut sauce which accompanied the roti was also delicious, a v. good satay sauce.
After consuming these dishes we felt extremely full and had to have our pork drunken noodles put into a takeaway container. The chef came out and was worried we didn't like the noodles but we reassured him that they were great we just couldn't continue stuffing our faces.
The staff were really attentive and helpful! Really friendly.
Really keen to go back - might try the brunch which seems different to the usual brunch offerings in Kingsland.
Farang is a great addition to Kingsland - I will definitely be back for some of those pork buns :D

Farang is a refreshing example of a restaurant that puts food first. The modest menu boasts some truly tasty, authentic Thai street inspired food. We went with a seliction of starters (Pork buns, Squid, Summer rolls) all of which brought back fond memories of SE Asia. And finished it off with a warmed cup of Pandan Sago w. young coconut and caramel. BYO too FYI. Will be back very soon!

Sitting right in front of Mondays (gorgeous wholefoods eatery), Farang is a hip eating experience guaranteed to satisfy the tastebuds. Went in for lunch on a Friday afternoon and was not disappointed. We ordered:

Gai Satay: 5/5 chicken beautifully marinated. Peanut sauce a perfect balance of sweet and spicy. Bread beautifully toasted. Cucumber salad delightfully refreshing. The only comment I'd make is the portion could be slightly larger, particularly the bread. But the taste was simply awesome.

Ginger Pork Noodle: 4/5 beautiful broth, perfect for a cool winter afternoon like today.

Paw Paw Slaw with Pork Belly: 5/5 hands down one of the best salads ever had. And of course the roasted pork belly was a moreish compliment to the papaya concoction.

Paw Paw Slaw with Calamari: 4/5 also a winner, but go for the pork belly instead I reckon. You just can't go wrong with pork belly!

Service: 4/5 nice friendly staff of Thai descent
Ambience/Decor: 5/5 beautifully decorated space with cute little plants everywhere
Food: 5/5 surpassed expectations no doubt!
Value: 4/5 portions could be a little bigger, but I am a big eater so may be just right for others.

Overall: 5/5 It's no surprise this joint just featured in Viva over the weekend. Keep it up guys. Will be back for more!!

Great people and the Asian Fusion style food was really different and flavoursome!I had a massaman lamb shank which was beautifula nice cosy place even in winter and now it is BYO which is greatwell recommended you will love it!!
The Apothecary Licensed Eatery
I don't recommend eateries readily to my wife but after having a lunch at Farang I took her. We went for dinner with a couple of friends we all work in hospitality. Outstanding genuine flavour. I love the soup during the day. The pork buns ,duck and eggplant in the evening. I'll be back for lunch this week. Very willing and genuine hosts. Thank you.
Came back to Auckland after living in Melbourne for 6 months and going to Farang cafe made me want to move back.

The food was outstanding, some of the best Thai I've ever had with spectacular flavours. A great calm, chill setting with quick relaxed and friendly service.

Had the squid entree packed a fiery punch and was the highlight of the dining experience. Would definitely recommend if you can handle your chili, otherwise your probably best to ask for it to be left out because it was very spicy. The duck curry was great to follow with as the fruits in it helped cool the mouth and it contained some great flavours.

Overall a great dining experience with great service, food and atmosphere. I just wish there was an Indian dish on the menu.

Lets start with a little about myself and my partner so people can know a little about the people behind the 5.0 rating we are giving.

My partner and I are big foodies. so much so we try to visit at least 3 new places each week (some old ones just to make sure there still just as good as the first time).Myself and my partner have eaten at many new, old, exciting and bad places around Auckland/New Zealand. With my partner being from Asia and myself New Zealand born with Dutch heritage we have a vast array of flavors we love and have grown up with.

FARANG.

We watch the previous little cafe/ bakery close down get semi striped out then this cool little restaurant start to take on its own personality. I love the style of the place with plenty to look at and keep your eyes occupied before and after ordering.

WAIT STAFF.

Service with a warm smile. Don't you just feel so much better when you walk off a cold street into a warm place to be greeted by a big smile, this for me is a big A+. The place is small but not cramped and the wait staff make you feel right at home and comfortable. They run through the usual routine of drinks etc before filling you in on there little restaurant, there style and a bit about there simple menu. They do not have BYO yet or Alcohol bar but there Non alcoholic cocktails are great. I can not wait until the council give them a liquor license and I hope people are not turned away by this.

ENTRY.

Sweetie boy buns and Bong's special chicken satay,

wow what a Treat these where. Good portion size and the flavor :D bang on. We where confused at first with the satay chicken as to why there was bread with it but the waitress explained that at home this is how they eat satay chicken with bread, I personally find it neat that there keeping this original to there home roots and not changing it to fit everyone else.

Sweetie Boy buns these where by far the icing on the cake for me I could just order these all night there that darn good. Hot moist sticky with perfectly cooked pork belly and a sauce that is to simply die for. ( A MUST TRY). :D ..

MAIN.

Bangkok BBQ Chicken and Jungle beef curry.

The jungle beef curry was a little on the salty side but other then that the Flavor was amazing like a good punch you do not expect.(Not spicy just yummy)

Bangkok BBQ Chicken you can get 1/4 chicken or 1/2 chicken but this is good bang for your buk. get chicken, marinade in some lovely Thai sauce grill it then roast if off toss some epic dipping sauce with flavor like no other and you can make magic happen. Simple food made good.

Dessert. Disappointed... Joking :D

We got Roti stack and Kluay buad she. so the Kluay is a Thai banana dish that is normally a street food over there? I think i got that right. its kinda a sweet savory desert its a hard flavor to put right but I can tell you I quiet enjoyed this little item as it was something different and I could imagine myself eating this in Thailand. Roti this is a yummy little desert kinda like a flat pancake with good quality ice cream to top it off however it did feel it was lacking something and I think it needs a little more but other then that Yummy.

My partner and I look forward to revisiting this little place and Highly recommend everyone who loves good authentic Thai food to give this place a try. Thank you everyone at Farang.
Jordan Bryant
If you love perfectly cooked thai food then you will wanna check this place out.
I have been to farang 3 times this week cause i cant get enough of the squid entree and drunken noodle main, i highly recommend this place to anyone who loves real food served by real people.
Laura Hansen
I went to this beautiful cosy place with my boyfriend tonight and it was an amazing experience that I can recommend to everyone.

I really enjoyed the great atmosphere- old- school with lots of nice details that make this place so special and unique.
The service was attentive, friendly and professional.

The food was absolutely delicious. I had the crispy chilli squid for a starter and it was the best squid I've ever had. For main I had the fish of the day which was cooked to perfection coming with yummy green apple slaw. I usually don't really eat spicy food but this was just right and full of awesome flavours.
For dessert I had the mango panacotta that was just melting in your mouth- so good!

The portions have a very good size, I was full in the end and happy with the prizes as well.

Thank you for such a good night with amazing food and great service. We will deinitely come back to try some other awesome dishes.
Ploy Woramaris
This is probably one of my all time favourite place to visit in Auckland, I'm from Melbourne but when I came down for work, Farang is the place to be. Sleek and sophisticated sharing style, this is the type of restaurant I could easily eat at every night of the week. Their dishes are always spectacular and their service is amazing. Had pulled pork roti and sago (it really is amazing). Definitely bringing my parents down here on their next visit!
Roger Dalton
Stopped in for dinner last night. .. ordered the chilli squid which was great but the salad was delicious n hot... then had the lamb shank for main which we shared... the sauce was beautiful. .. reduced n thick great depth if flavour. .. bit of heat in there but and you could taste the love... then got 2 puddings. Pandan Sago... with palm sugar caramel. ..could have had the sago by itself as the caramel kinda over powered the rest... and coconut banana. .. both lovely and have that coconut based flavour I love... but can never put my finger on.

An unassuming delight tucked quietly in Kingsland this place has so much to offer that one must try. A warm and genuine welcome on a cold winter morning ✔
Nothing pretentious about this decor. A tiny seating area inside and a slightly bigger seating area to the side that will open up in the cool summer nights and well sheltered from most climate elements. It's offers an uncomplicated menu with tasty ingredients. Service was warm and genuine through our morning feast.
Big Farang: the sausages small but packed so much good flavour the size was definitely on the flavour; generous serving of bacon; roasted toms; soft poached eggs, perfectly cooked; and the potato rosti, well I'm not normally one to eat if there is grain toast on the plate but today the toast was left for the flavour compact well seasoned rosti that was not dripping in oil. Ridiculously full of flavour my plate that I didn't even need the hollandaise sauce!
Daughter ordered Roti pancakes with banana, egg, syrup and a side of bacon. In between drooling she managed a 'she could easily smash another' pleasantly delighted with fluffiness of the roti instead of the usual pancake mix.
Our coffees also gets a big thumbs up along with the choc banana LSAP smoothie downed before the roti pancake arrived.
Yes I would Definitley go back to try the lunch menu. Selfishly I don't want anyone to find this place but no doubt people will want to try for themselves.
Great start to any weekend.

I went for brunch, ordered grillled chicken and roti peanut sauce, food was great and staffs were friendly. Would recommend for everyone. Will come back to try dinner meals.
