Review The Fish & Chip Shop - Auckland

Alfredo Jr Fallarme
I've tried a lot of really good fish and chips shops, but regrettably, this particular one did not meet the same standard. The other menu could be promising, but the fish of the day and chips option I sampled didn't live up to expectations, especially considering its $9 price tag. On a positive note, I appreciated the neat packaging using layers of paper and the thoughtful provision of a carry bag. The service was commendable, and the store's ambiance gave you that fish market vibe.

Loved their crumbed hoki. Thick cut fries are always fun. Salt and Pepper squid are a hit or miss...they were nicely done without a doubt. Maybe I was more into their crumbed fish haha. Nice and friendly staff, good to have them around in Kingsland.

AS SOON as L3 hit.....yip support the locals and we did just that....Absolutely yum fish'n chips! I'm not a huge fan of batter (Partner is) however this chip shop does Panko crumbed fish, which I love along with a squeeze of lemon!!!! The fish was super fresh and not at all oily, hit the spot, match that with a Pineapple Jarritos YUM. Prices are reasonable, staff are friendly and everything we had was fresh. Note: pictures: 2 different visits

Absolutely amazing fish and chips! We also got oysters but ate them too quickly because they were so delicious. The fish was super fresh, I would recommend the Panko crumb- it’s extra crispy. The tartare sauce was deliciously tangy and creamy, perfect with the fish. Prices are very reasonable and everything we had was fresh. Will definitely be my new local

Friendly staff, food is decent. I usually order the meal for 2. Sometimes the fish is overcooked and chips/fritters aren't well cooked but most of the time it's okay. I don't go very often now though because their prices have gone up. Although it's hard to blame them as food is more expensive everywhere.

Trying different fish and chip shops looking for a good one this one parking a little hard food was absolutely wonderful but the price showed it probably one of the most expensive I've found that's not a restaurant, liked it lots chips good burger lots of greens nice sauce lovely food price ?

Sandringham fish and chips are so good you need to try. Meals for 2 are great purchase and value. Chips are large and the food good like the burger meal for x2 chips and x2 big burgers extras for steak and condiments but thats ok bacon burger add egg is $1.50 and normally comes to $27.00 and worth your spend. Parking is on main road and side streets best option as this is went traffic is a little heavy order on line its a good option if you dont want to park up they give you a time and are good on time allocated to pickup. X2 fish and chip meal is another option that is very good and family meals. They have homemade items too. Service goes hand in hand with product food. Not bag fish and chip shop, oil deep frying has been fresh that you cannot taste the oil or see it on the packaging. Good for treat nights if in your budgets. Opens from 4-4.30pm which is good to dial in an order.

The fish was good, but the chips needed a bit more cooking.

Clean and fresh fish and chips. Def will come here again

I had the snapper, potato fritters and oysters tonight and they were so fresh and delicious - perfectly salted. Definitely my new go to f&c shop!
Vaimoana Lolohea
Excellent fish n chips - fish was very fresh, crumbed mussels were delicious, and chips were crunchy and a great portion size. Had a very happy and satisfied hubby tonight. We will be back again!
Liz McCarthy-Edwards
Up and down in terms of quality. Mostly up. To illustrate, we order fish and chips once a week and 3/4 times, quality's very good. That one time (last week, incidentally) the chips and fritters were greasy, overly crusty and brown. Friendly service though.
Christina “Chris”
Really really delicious fresh fish n chips. I highly recommend the breadcrumbed fish. While snapper is great the terakihi is also fantastic. There is even takeaway ceviche, most of my family really enjoy this, a lighter option and very flavourful!

The best fish & chips in NZ!

This store has some of the best fish and chips in Auckland. Located on the corner of Burnley Terrace and Sandringham Road depending on the time of day park in my might be a little limited. Fish and chips are cooked well with a nice batter on the fish. Overall, takeaways are fairly priced but it is a shame that the fish of the day is not fresh, although they do have some fairly priced fresh fish options.
Robert Cooke
A top quality fish and chip soon. I am not a big fish fan so never got some but I do like my chips and the chips are great value and really tasty . I have gone back a few times and I will go back again.

I have been going here every now and then. They were closed for around a month around Christmas so I ended up finding a new favourite in the area. I enjoy their chips and panko crumbed snapper. Completely destroyed my experience of squid after eating overcooked S&P squid which had a coating that tasted like fried chicken - gross! Only went here because F&C in Remuera Village is closed on Tuesdays but I doubt I'll be back anytime soon.

Excellent fish and chips and the service was very friendly!

Excellent burgers for a excellent price.

Best salt an pepper squid in the world!!

Visited the new Epsom branch. Nice store, fresh food and at a great price. Will definitely be visiting again.

Excellent fare from Westmere last night!
YHMO!
Disappointed with the burnt chips & frying dregs included...
Most fish & chip shops use tongs to pick from the frying basket rather than tip the lot onto the paper!
Fairfoodie
The most amazing fresh crumbed oysters I have ever had.
Randy
Had the panko crumbed fish and it was to die for. I would 100% recommend this option in the tarakihi or snapper. Also if you’re into fish cakes, this place does a good home made one with a good balance of fish, potato and coriander. I will definitely be back!!!
Robert Ramos
Best fish & chip shop in the area, and prices are reasonable. I usually get the meal for 2 for $11.50, which includes 2 fish + 2-3 fritters + chips for 2. Recommended!!
Vivek
Tried their hamburgers, fritters and grilled fish and everything was good. I wish they can make a little dine-in place as well. Price is reasonable and service is good.
Mike

Food: 8/10
Service: 8/10
Ambience: 8/10

Overall: 8/10

Chips were really delicious, with the outside slightly crispy and the inside potato nice and moist, just the way I like it 🤤. The fish of the day was Hoki, which was probably the best fish I’ve eaten in a long time. I’m giving four stars because the crumbled squid was a bit too moist and mushy, not really worth the price. Overall, fantastic fish and chip shop and recommend to everyone looking for an authentic NZ fish and chip flavoured experience 😋

We have had takeaways from here several times
The burgers are very good
I am told the fish is also
Overall a good experience and a cut above many similar stores

I'm a big fan of a hearty portion of chips! It's my second time coming here so I decided to opt for a hotdog and spring roll instead of a battered fish. Unfortunately I didn't find them very nice. They were both soggy and lacked flavor. This time round the chips were soggy and not salted enough also. The price was $9 for them all so not too bad and it filled me up but I have been to cheaper! I got my order quickly and they answered my phone order immediately so another star for that. If I had to rate the best fish n chip in Auckland it would be Tony's takeaways in west harbour! Best crunchy golden chips in Auckland 😊
Angelita Smith
This is the best place for Fresh fish and simply unbeatable fries. I do not know how they can be rated 3.6 when their food is so good. I drive from another suburb to avail myself of this Fresh Fish. Crumbed Snapper is superb, always fresh and a generous portion compared to all these other places which charge fine dining rates. My favourite place in Auckland.
Lizzie
The salt and pepper squid with aioli is one of the best things ever!! The crumbed snapper is also perfection! Really yummy fish and chips and great value!

Recently we ordered F&Chips for 72 adults & 50 kids for our local daycare. It was amazing. We got kids boxes for all kids $5.50 ones. Plus they offered us individual portions of 1 fish and chips for adults each in a box. It was all fresh, tasty, good quality and the event was awesome. We picked up at 4:45pm on a Sunday and it was all ready and had just been made. Such great service and staff very helpful. We will always go back there for more.

When we are here we either go for the fish of the day or snapper with chips and I was never disappointed. We even bought fish and chips for some friends we were visiting and they also loved it. Their potato and pineapple fritters are also good. It gets busier towards evening and the shop is only open for a couple of hours. The service is very quick and you get those American style paper bags for the takeaways. Parking could be tricky and may need to park either on the roads on the side or opposite, so it may need a little walk. But for this fish and chips we never minded those walks.
Sian Wichman
I'd say this is the best and cleanest fish and chip shop in Auckland. Also they have such fresh fish which I buy here weekly also as the Auckland Fish Market isn't convenient for me. I am super fussy when it comes to seafood and how it is prepared. Been coming here for years and they never disappoint.

Sometimes a little on the salty side - but that's my fault for not saying so.

You honestly get what you pay for when it comes to Fish & Chips...

Great work guys :)
S
I had been meaning to try out our local fish and chip shop for awhile now. Last night I popped down and ordered a meal for two... parking was a bit difficult to find but the place was clean and fresh. The three guys working there were really and I really enjoyed their customer service. The paper bag was a really nice edition

The fish was a bit dry and overcooked but still enjoyable, the potato fritters were alright, the chips were quite nice though. Overall a good experience and next time I will order some of their seafood too.

I came here with dad one time while visit his brother (my uncle). Ordred the ordinary Fish and Chips with the addition of 8 Scallops, because after all I am a scallop freak at times. The chips were very fresh and the oil that was used to cook it was very clean also. The scallops were very juicy and flavourful as well as the fish also.

The services however was pretty normal, the ordinary greeting and waiting time pretty much matched our expectations.

Looking outside, the shop is dead in the corner of the street. Going inside it's relatively small and seems fairly new. They have a very large signage outside which you can see from at least 300m away, which I think is pretty damn clever.

Excellent batter, fresh fish, crispy but fluffy chips! And at a great price too. They are always busy, so be ready to wait a lil bit. Also had their burgers and they are generous portions and super tasty.

My favourite fish and chip shop and I'd go as far to say the best fish and chip shop in Auckland. Fish is always fresh and cooked well. The salt and pepper squid is my all time favourite!
Benedict Uy
Went for the meal for 2 and were pretty much stuffed afterwards. The fish was cooked well and the batter nice and crispy. Most the fries were just right although they did look a little undercooked. The potato fritters were just right. Good chippery in the area.

Found this place on Zomato - great little place for fish and chips. Batter is fresh and crispy and the chips are done perfectly. What makes it even better is the price. 2 fish and a large chips (enough for 2) is only $12. My husband and I go here most weekends - we reckon its cheaper than making our own dinner!

My manager reccomended we try this place after work one day when we went to her house for our weekly tv show night! Im glad we did because the food was rather yummy! We rang up to order our food which woukd be ready to collect in 10/15mins so was a quick easy dinner for us to go and collect. Me and my manager sarah decided we would have burger and chips so we went halves on the burger special which was $18 for 2x burger and 2x chips! Pretty decent! I had the corn chicken burger and she had a cheeseburger! Our other friend elishea decided on fish and chips and she was equally as happy. My burger was soo tasty and had lots of flavour. The only thing i could say was i would of liked a little more chicken in there but it still filled me up anyway. The chips were also really nice! They were really thick and not greasy either and was a massive portion! I would defo eat here again when i next go to sarahs!

Have only been here once. The chips and fish burger was fine. The beef burger patties were just weird in flavour and consistency. Squid rings fine too but just your stock standard rings.

Thought we'd try this place after hearing a lot of good things about it and I'm glad we did as The Fish & Chip shop lived up to its reputation and did not disappoint.

Large pieces of fish (we ordered snapper) and crisp beer battered chips. We also ordered a portion of the salt and pepper calamari and a kids meal.

Simple food but fresh and tasty.

Highly recommend this place.

Rating out of 5 (5 being the highest):
Food – 4
Ambience – 3
Presentation – 3.5
Service – 4
Environment – 3

Probably the best fish and chip shop I've ever been to.
Everything tastes clean and fresh. They have different cooking methods for your fish, so you don't have to go all battered and fried. Nothing to complain about unless you are looking for standard Fish and Chip shop prices.. This is a fraction more. But worth it

I live just down the road from their new site in Epsom, used to be kings kitchen but these guys have taken over which I think is what the area needs, love the interior and neatness. Decent portion for good money I must say and every time I go for my scallops I get an extra one in the bag *thumbs up* something I do hope they will have set up in the near future is the YQ system it will make everything so much easier! (If you guys read this review you guys should look into that system!)

The best fish and chip shop in Auckland (for me so far)!

The shop is clean and nice, without fishy smell like other shops. Service is always good and quick.

First time I was there I ordered 2 scallops, 2 fishes and small chips but I got 3 scallops and heapsssss of chip. I thought they did something wrong or maybe it was their marketing trick to bring back customer haha. But every time I go there, I always get an extra stuff which is REALLY GOOD!

Well...if they don't give extra stuff, I still go there because the food is really good! Highly recommended if you are in the area :)

I've always passed by this shop but never really went in, mostly because I was busy and just passing through the same route it is on. However, a good friend of mine used to work here and he always raved about how good their fish and chips actually are. He bought us some once while he was visiting. It was my favourite fish (tarakihi) and it was one of the best battered fish I had ever tasted! In spite of it being wrapped and brought home by a good 20 mins bus ride, it was still warm and crunchy. The fish was beautiful and fresh. It just tasted amazing! The chips too! Hand cut chips which were crunchy and yum. Not at all soggy. Keep up the good work guys!

First time ever at this Fish & Chip Shop. Very clean, Grade A facility. Nice assistance and owner. Got home with our takeaways, beautiful taste with the crumbed tarakihi fish and kumara chips. Well
Done guys. Best ever I have come across.

Really enjoyed our trip to the Fish and Chip Shop tonight. We drove past and it smelt amazing so we had to stop in and see what they offered. It's pretty standard chip shop fair but done very well.
My boyfriend had the crumbed snapper. He loved it and it was much better than any of the other fish and chip places we've tried in the Mount Eden area. I had the classic fish cake and loved it. Best fish cake I've had in a long time. I would like to try the spicy Thai fish cake as well. It was a good size and so well cooked. The chips were mediocre, not amazing but not horrible either. The salt and pepper squid was epic and the price was pretty good.
I'd definitely go back here again and might even make it a weekly visit.

Reasonably priced, chips were tasty and not soggy. Crumbed fish of the day was lovely - and not too fatty.

Pineapple fritter wasn't the best one I've had but was the least fatty.

Will go back and would recommend.

So bad I couldn't even eat one mouthful. All the food tasted old.

The chicken nuggets were well cooked, but were mushy inside like pate. They looked good, but were not nice.

The cheese burger was the worst burger I have ever had. It looked nice, but neither the patty or the cheese were heated through. Again, the meat in the patty was mushy and cold inside like it had been precooked and then left sitting in the fridge for too long. The cheese hadn't really been heated up either.

This is the second time I have been to this place and even though it was not very good the first time (Chips and Fritters), I decided to give it another chance.... big mistake.

Frankly I am shocked to have been severed food this bad. It was like being in an episode of Gordon Ramsay Kitchen Nightmares

I have registered on this site just so I can share how horrible the food was. I would not recommend this place to anyone.
Rajneil Rinal
The best fish n chip shop in town! Have never been disappointed by them . waiting time is usually 15 mins. The aoli is to die for.they use all local products like local fresh fish and use mostly homemade products.
Amanda Clarke
This seems to be the best fish and chip shop closest to us, however the quality can be rather hit and miss.

It's not enough to put us off though.

Wait time is usually 10-15 minutes so can't complain about that.
Frazer Mackie
Ordered 3 chips and 3 fish. Came in two wrappers. One with one fish and chips and one with two fish stuck together and chips. Batter was soggy and stuck to the paper and chips were undercooked. I am a previous fan of this shop but will not be returning. Registered with this site just to review I am that disappointed.
Beth
Good food, but bad service. Have been going there since it opened and have been very patient. But nearly every time I call, they don't answer, if I'm lucky, they answer on the 3rd call. On multiple occasions I've had to go elsewhere because I've been calling for 20 minutes and no ones answered. On one occasion I called for 25 minutes, at 5pm on a weekday, then went down there to order in person because no one was answering, and all the staff were sitting out in the kitchen and ignoring the phone, even once I got there I had to ask someone to serve me. I've had to go somewhere else now because I'm sick of waiting for them to answer the phone. But, great food there, if you can order! If they sort out the phone and hire people who will answer the phone I will happily order from them again!
Janice
Just had a beef burger with cheese from here and, in all my 50 or so years on this earth, it was the best burger i have ever had! I initially thought the price of $8.50 was a bit steep but, oh my god, it was so worth it.
It had the nicest firm buns topped with sesame seeds, fancy lettuce, generous slices of tomato, luscious caramelised onions ...all topped with their homemade aioli and their homemade tomato relish and fantastic cheese.
I seriously recommend this shop if you want a decent burger. I have tried similar burgers from upmarket players like burger fuel and this tops theirs.
It reminded me of the burgers we used to get from the pie cart on a Friday night in Te Awamutu back in the early 1970's.
no bull.....go and try it.
update 2015...Sadly this has changed owners and the food has gone downhill, in my opinion. The onions are not caramelised, just mushy, and the burger was squashed beyond recognition. What a shame.
Laura Noblejas
Went tonight and ordered fish, chips, a cheeseburger and a hot dog. Fish was tasteless and oily, hot dog was wrapped in a paper bag then wrapped in with the fish and chips so that was soggy. Overall not good, expensive and won't be going back there. Guy that was cooking had no hat in and had a big head of hair that was dreadlocked. Not a good look. Will stick to the Mt Eden Fisheries on Dominion Rd opposite Glengarrys. At least they are always serving amazing fish and chips. This Sandringham Fish & Chip Co is a waste of money.
Tommy
i hadn't tried this place prior to last Saturday at about 6 . I went down with a few mates to try it out but found it was packed full of people waiting for there orders (must be great food then!) brought 2 crumbed tarakihi , 2 battered tarakihi, hot dog , and 2 lots of chips. the wait was quite long (staff said 20 mins but closer to 30) - we didnt really mind though. when we got home, the fish was light and literally melted in our mouths. light crispy batter and a lovely bread crum that was full of flavour. The chips probably needed a bit more salt but they were prefect texture, hot dog was alright no real comment on it. overall it was worth the long wait, and we were all pleased and definitley be coming back!
Bob
We have made 3 separate attempts to buy here over the 6 months. 1st time, the wouldn't answer the phone. 2nd time, the eventually answered and then after we ordered we were told there would be a 40min wait. -Sorry, No Thanks.
The 3rd time was this week, just to grab some fresh fish for dinner. The fish looked good, it was $3kg more expensive than usual, -but I don't mind supporting local if their good.
The 3 staff took some time to help me. No problem. We pick the fillets, weigh and price. But he decides to round the price up. We get that sorted only to discover they don't take credit cards. I just didn't have anything else on me.
Silly me for not being prepared, but after the 3rd failed attempt to buy there and the keystone cops routine inside. I give up.
Lou
Very tasty but forgot the tartare sauce
Jonathan
We have tried this place three times now and tonight will be the last. They say on their homepage that phone orders are welcome however they take forever to answer their phone, if they even bother to pick it up. Tonight I felt lucky as I got through on my second try. They said our order would be 10 - 15 mins. I arrived after 15mins had passed, only to wait another 15mins for our order to be finished. Our order was not huge - 2 fish and 1 scoop of chips (which I was assured was plenty for two people) but even so, I was surprised when presented with a tiny parcel of food so after exiting the shop, I checked inside to make sure they had included everything. What I found was two pieces of fish approximately 7 or 8cm long (this is no exageration) and a smattering of chips. I went back inside and opened the packet to show the guy serving and, unprompted, even he exclaimed "oh s*#t" when looking at the portions. He brought another staff member over to explain and I was told that was the size of the portions and that the manger cut them himself. This is a complete rip-off as far as I'm concerned and got my money back. I instead went up the road to Satya and got great service and awesome food in just over 10mins.
Wow
Monday night 7 pm phone shop which is 100meters from home
They say to collect at 715 so I turn up and pay $25 for 2xcrumbed fish,1xfish cake,2 crunbed scollops fair enough.
But then sat there waiting and waiting finally got it at 755pm
Walked 100 meters home it was cold so ran back they said the staff was new and offered my half my money back and come back in 15 and get new fish so went home opened the pack the chips, scallops and fish cake all cold and chips were very bad cold and scoggy, so went back again said I would come back in 15 for a replacement when I got home again it had new chips no fish cake and 2 battered oysters not the 2 crumbed scallops I had ordered rang them up and met them in the street half way and got the fish cake and gave back the oysters and said no to going back to get the scallops.
This place I can see from my front door but don't plan to go back will be safer to get in car I reckon.
David Colquhoun
The fish and chips are great, good batter good chips.

But the other weekend they closed at 8pm, on a sunday night.

I'ld suggest calling first, but they take about 20 minutes to answer their phones.

Could be an awesome fish and chip shop if they sorted out their service. But then they're busy, so they probably don't need to bother.
Dave T
I have bought the fish&chips, fish burger, and hot dog I can say the fish has a lovely batter to it and was tasty and also the hotdog. The chips needed some more flavour to it but it was light and crisp. The fish burger was slighty dry may need more tartare sauce. But overall its worth it and I will go back.

Last week I took my friend and her two teenagers to the fish & chip shop for a treat. I'd been there before and had the fish burger - which was delicious (really fresh bun, perfectly cooked fish and delicious tartare sauce). We each had a piece of fish with chips and the older boy had a hamburger. The chips were to die for - lightly seasoned and obviously cooked in really nice oil. Josh declared the burger a 9/10 and we all really enjoyed the fish - it was Terakihi and melted in our mouths. They also had really good family meal deals. I hope this new business does well. They've obivously put a lot of effort into making this a really clean shop and have a great menu (that's cheap too). What a welcome addition to the neighbourhood!
Annabelle Robertson
Fish was good but that was about all. The caramelized onions on my chicken burger were more like pickled onions and the relish was more like tomato sauce with mustard seeds in it. The chips were old and dull.
Not going back there.

I'm pretty committed to Mt Eden Fisheries and eat Fish and Chips once a week. I generally only buy Fish & Chips from places that sell fresh fish. However, I had to try the Fish & Chip Shop because it just opened around corner and looks great. Crab Sticks and Chips were delicious. However, I could not eat my fish because it tasted and smelt of ammonia. I wasn't worried because it definitely seemed fresh. I expressed this to my 6 year old son who said "great, I'll eat yours then" and promptly did so, loving it. I will get next weeks Fish & Chips from Mt Eden Fisheries.
Charlie M.
What I love about this place are the fish and chips the staff is simply delicious. This fish and chip shop also has great staff too. Only thing I don't like is the place closes early at 8.30pm and wish it could open late for those wanting their fish and chip as an after 9pm snack. Overall, it is a great place for fish and chips.
