Review Speaker's Corner Ale House - Auckland

Big meals at good prices and the wait wasn’t long. British pub grub sums up the menu. Unfortunately my medium rare steak was a fair way beyond medium but overall it was a good feed for everyone.

I really like this place, the food is amazing!!! And the people and service is so kind and really on to it. 100/100 would recommend and we will be back again.

Went here on 01/07/23 for a family pub lunch. It's always good to have a pint of ice cold Kilkenny on tap. The food and service were by far the best I've seen in a long time from any place. Huge servings for a reasonable price that came out super fast and hot. Chips were slightly dry but didn't bother us. Friendly and kind waitress and bar staff. Great view of the ocean from inside and out. Everyone seemed happy and enjoyed themselves. Highly recommend to all to come along and visit this place if you're in the area. Will be back soon

Great pub experience. Come for the weekly dinner specials! We came on a Thursday so my boyfriend could have the 500gram steak for $20. What a bargain! He ordered it medium and had a little regret for not choosing medium rare as it was a tad dry - but he was otherwise really happy with the meal. There's always a nive buzz in the place with plenty of people having a good time. I love how efficient they are with their ordering system as well

Food was very tasty, very generous servings and great prices. Awesome service too. It is just like an old English pub complete with cosy warm fire. We will be back again for sure.

Aside from being slightly busy, this place was great, the patrons were friendly and warm, the restaurant/bar area was tidy and well kept, plenty of seating even when it was busy, the service staff were pleasant and the food was delicious, highly reccomend

A fantastic place to be after work whether it is sunny, windy or rainy as the venue accommodates all sorts of weather as you keep contemplating the wonders of one of the beautiful beach in New Zealand. You will be attempted to go everyday to be served nice evening meal + free glass of wine or beer (enjoy your choice).

Food was absolutely amazing,no long wait, waiters were polite and very helpful and prices were great for portions !

For the price, food is not bad at all. Cheaper compared to most. Always a great catchup here with friends, good vibe.

Great English Pub vibe. The garlic prawn pasta and fish and chips with mushy peas were delicioso. Next time I must try the mulled cider 🤠🤙🏾!

The only truly independent pub I know. Great selection of tap and bottle beer and not tied to any single brewery. Food is great value - get the curry of the day with half chips and half rice!
Kerry “Kerry”
Love the old English pub style. Staff are lovely!! Got a plate of Wedges was huge and had plenty of the toppings. Food has changed alot since I was last here. Atmosphere can be serene during the day or on a quiet night to all out fun and rowdy when a big game is on. Highly recommend

Great pub in that resembles a British pub. Great outside area with a view of the beach. Tasty pub grub with excellent prices and amazing selection of drinks however the service wasn't good but i feel the girl was new. Recommended coming here if your in the area.

Great place to hang out. Food portions are huge and good for sharing.

The staff are always friendly and professional. A good place to just sit, have something to drink and unwind

More than meets the eye. A great English pub vibe inside with a decent beer selection and great value grub.

Went today for lunch. Hubby had roast of the day. The veg was dry and shrivelled, one piece of meat, not impressed. I had the breakfast. Was all ok, but the beans were congealed and looked likethey had been reheated over and over. Seems to have gone downhill a bit. Different chef maybe?

If I could review a negative I would. Was at this establishment in the afternoon over the weekend and absolutely disgusted by four foul mouthed so called "women", certainly not ladies swearing and cursing loudly out the front. This was considered my local, not any more. At least hree tables of patrons sitting outside all hastily retreated inside and the general consensus was we wont be back ever again. This pub has gone to the dogs and I mean literally.

We had some food here recently (Sunday) and it was lovely. Reasonable price and quick service. Food was very nice and filling. Will be back again soon. Magners on tap just topped of a very nice meal.

Normally a great place to enjoy a family dinner but quality has slipped greatly. Waited ages for food that came very staggered, time between first and last dish to come was around 15 min. Quality of food was disappointing. Burgers were very average and the ham roast special was burnt and had little to no potatoes. Service wasn’t great either. Such a shame as they used to be such a great place to eat and prices are always very reasonable.

Extacy in it's the finest form. The view is breathtaking, the food is delicate and delicious, the staff are friendly and attentive. Truly a pub worth dying for. #DishyBois4Life

It would be very hard to find anything bad to say about this place. The atmosphere was vibrant, and the food was nothing short of amazing. Enjoy the night!

Good prices however the food wasn’t great - very bland, there is no atmosphere and the service is non existent. Would not recommend unless all you want is a drink.

Fantastic bar with a great selection of food and beers, always made to feel welcome by the lovely staff and patrons lovely location by the beach, would highly recommend

My favourite pub lunch venue. I love the full English breakfast and the staff are always friendly. It is good value for money as there is plenty of food and after brunch here I only need a snack for dinner. I've been many times with friends and family who have had many of the different items on the menu and they have always been happy and satisfied with their choice. There is an extensive menu but their English breakfast is my happy place.

Awesome pub! Great staff drinks aren't too badly priced ... food is super awesome and good value for money... when it's busy it's quite a loud place and not very nice to be in, must be the really low ceiling? But overall great pub when it's quiet

Steak was awful and could not eat. Covered in gravey all over which was the same gravey they had on the ribs... very average. Waited for 40 mins for meals we didn't finish. View was good.

Great place to go on a cold Tuesday night with the pub quiz, food all good for the price, bar staff friendly and good selection of beer, good parking nearby. Have never had to wait long for the food.

Great pub but some of the regulars need reigning in. Went there tonight to watch the All Blacks v the Lions and was unhappy with the racist comments of Lions supporters. Yelling out "black bas***d" at one stage. They are obnoxious and offensive and need to be pulled in to line. Shame about them, but otherwise a nice place to visit.
Raspberry Beret
Dire. Only given it the extra .5 because prices are reasonable. The beer tasted like the pipes hadn't been cleaned yet this year, the food wasn't up to muster at all - how can a medium rare steak come out blackened? The toilets were so vile, I used the public loos nearby. And to top it off, I took my kids and had to move them inside as the foul language from other patrons outside was embarrassing. A poor attempt at an English Ale House. (P.S. I am a Pom.)

This place needs to improve quickly for their own sake, or give up serving proper meals at all.

Place was under staffed resulting in a 45 minute for food. When the food did come the quality left much to be desired considering the price. The burger I had was made out of a cheap looking and dry bun with a patty that was obviously frozen and contained a lot of fillers. The fish and chips was very oily and the eggs benedict my dad had looked like plastic.

I would recommend you to give this a pass until they get their act together.

Terrible food, slow food service. Not enough staff to handle the Christmas break up rush. Also we were seated first for our work break up and had asked for the retractable awning to be retracted so we could sit in the sun. Other customers turned up and asked to bring the awning out and the staff did it for them with out considering what we wanted. NOT A GOOD PLACE TO GO

Been coming here for at least 15 years. Now that I am old enough to drink something other than their delicious pink panthers and rasberry cokes I am able to appreciate just how nice it is to actually have a decent pub as finding a bar with good food at good prices aswell as proper pints proper beer at prices that aren't going to break bank ( you won't find $12 half pints here ) with friendly staff and lovely owners with a warm atmosphere you will love your stay here. ( I write this as I am sat by the fire with a nice cold pint of monteith original a personal favourite of mine ) . Overall these guys are winners and I feel like a winner when I am here

Pretty standard pub with the usual pub food trimmings. Steak night Thursday, roast Sunday. There's probably more in there but I haven't really taken notice of them. Overall not incredible, but it's not like you expect the ritz when you come to a place like this. Decent imported beer selection actually. Even have Tennants on tap as well as decent German beers, good wise I would dart across the road to ramen takura.

We always go there for beers, and always have a great time. Many options to choose from, great place for beer fans. They always have sprots event showing

We came here in an attempt to avoid the Boxing Day sale madness and to just relax and enjoy the sun. The venue seemed adequately staffed however there were a load of dirty tables left around and it wasn't all that busy. We ordered a beer - which ended up being flat which might be due to the massive range of tap beers they have available (hence not enough people buy it and it sits there for a while). We also ordered a surf and turf and steak meal, it took a while to come out and even when it did the presentation was less than appealing. The food was very mediocre, the pepper sauce I ordered with my steak was very runny, almost watery and the veges were alright, except the carrots which they seem to either have forgotten to peel or just serve them as it (if it's the latter I do hope it's been washed thoroughly). The surf and turf was okay, my boyfriend says he enjoyed it.

I'm not too sure whether I would return here, the food was very average and the view was okay. The service was great though :)

Absolutely poor service, very disappointin,g would recommend never going there, bad chef, food was not worth the very very very very long wait. On a plus they have good range of beer, would never go there again though.

I use to live local and have been in a few times, My family and I visited recently and we were very disappointed. They were having a busy night and we were told there was a half hour wait for food, which was fine, except that half an hour turned into an hour and a half without any staff bothering to let us know. Even on a busy night a heads up would have been good, even someone asking if we wanted other drinks etc would have been good customer service. After waiting so long, I expected the food to be worth the wait, sadly it was not at all. We ordered the platter which was much different than the menu stated, Elements were missing and the "home made dips" were BBQ sauce and Thousands Islands dressing (from a bottle I am sure) The prawns were undercooked, as was the squid. The staff removed the surcharge on our drinks, which was very nice of them, but a little more attention to detail for our meals would have made it much more enjoyable. The drinks selection was great, as was the entertainment, and the decor was nice but I will definitely not be returning for food as for the price we paid and the wait we had I expected something much different. Even on a busy night, for an hour and a half It should have been at least cooked properly and when dealing with seafood a little attention would have been good.

Visited this pub the other day, had a couple of there beers. The 1st beer tasted off so spoke to the bar maid only to be told that no one else had complained. So thought it was only me. So tried another beer to find same result. So thought I would call it a day. Went to the men's only to find a smelly urinal & what I can only say as being third world conditions, no hand wash & second grade hand dryer. Disgusting will never drink there again specially when there are so many other clean bars to drink in Browns Bay.

Went to a talent show at speakers corner to watch my friend take part and perform. It was a real shame as the guy who was the MC all night and hosting it was so drunk and constantly swearing and making offensive jokes over the microphone. I personally could handle it but there were many elders in the crowd watching their children/grand children perform and it was disappointing that they had to listen to a lot of the junk that was being said. It could've been a really nice night but unfortunately we were forced to listen to constant loud drunk bellowing down the mic from the MC and Judges where every second word was f***. I probably wouldn't go back as its put me off, along with my friends.
Claire Wallbank
We had the chicken burgers. What a disappointment. The chicken was dry and tough. The buns were cheap nasty and dry. The salad was not that good. The chips were marginal. A very unfortunate choice of venue to eat at.
Patricia Naomi
I must say that beer wise there was a good selection of local & imported beers but do they have to chill their English ales as much as they do?? These are supposed to be cool but not to the extent of turning the glass foggy. As for the food, a huge disappointment. The hamburger buns were dry & thick The Wedges & Nachos looked a bit lifeless. More attention to presentation would help.
Christine Swann
The food was crap my eggs were really dry and my toast was rock hard. Worst of all was the service especially this one waitress in particular. Short olive skin brown hair Maori looking features. Worst attitude ever. She is the reason I am never going back.
David Watson-Smith
Very good choice of beers, good food with very cheap lunch and weekday evening specials.
Pamela Smith
Really bad food but the service was good.Paid 16.50 for a sea food basket which was just about all chips and then they forgot to put some of the food in the basket so had to ask for it not that it was worth it .2 battered mussles,2 scallops,1 crab stick,2 small fish bites that looked like food for a little kid. Very sad
Glenn
One out of three meals were about average to poor but mine was not eatable. I complained to be told they were sorry I wasn't happy, and that was it. Not as sorry as me because I paid $16.00 to fill there rubbish bin . The pie was so salty it was disgusting. I recommend you stay away if you want to eat a nice meal. The beer was good but you can buy that at the super market.

The secret to enjoying your experience at Speaker's is to forget everything that most modern pubs are trying to be. Don't get dressed up or worry too much about your appearance.
You wont find small portions of fancy food stacked delicately on massive plates, or frou-frou cocktails with equally fruity names.
Instead you'll be treated to a decent feed at a fair price.
The burgers are probably the best bang for your buck.

Would have got a higher mark but has gone down hill over the last couple of years. Whoever did the refurb needs to go to design school, instead of improving it, it looks worse - no taste. Beer choice is still pretty good but again was better a few years ago for the overseas beers. Typical pub grub and is well priced
