Review The Bay Cafe - Auckland

Just moved in to the neighborhood couple months ago, first time here to have my brunch. Friend highly recommended I should give it a try saying despite the old fashioned style they do make good foods. I ordered big breakfast and I loved it! Good meal Good service Good price

What a hearty meal in a winter day: beef meatball pasta with lemon ginger tea, all with the price of $20!

On a sunny day, this is a great place. Good coffee (although not quite sure why it was served in cardboard cups when we also ordered food). The Oreo Smoothie came complete with an Oreo - and was great tasting. But the thing that will make us visit again was the waffles. We shared a plate (even though it is only $11.50) and it was a good way of finishing off a nice drink sitting outside watching people. Friendly staff, clean and good value.

Great Breakfasts and excellent coffee. Lots of seating. Sit and read the paper. Friendly staff. Worth a visit. Popular with the elder folk of Blockhouse Bay.

Great little cafe to come to after our adventures in the Waitakere ranges. Plenty of choices on the blackboard menu, plenty more on the menu, and even more in the chilled cabinet. Service was friendly, great and efficient. Food was yum. Kids loved oreo shakes. They do a mini breakfast for less than $10 which has bacon, eggs, tomato, and so much more. Great value for money!
Johanna Callander
Always good coffee and friendly service.

This cafe is simple but that hides their great food, coffee and staff. Been going here for years and it is a must do for anyone who visits us as their request to come brunch at.
Annelle Hunter
Yummy food everytime and amazing, friendly staff! Favourite place in Blockhouse Bay.
Raksha Tailor
0/10. Poor customer service. Rude as staff member who claims she's a manager. Overcooked eggs. Cold coffee. Do not enter.
Jan Pitout
Great new menu, very friendly staff and, best of all, a good cup of hot, strong coffee. Well worth the visit.

The Best Cafe in Blockhouse Bay!!! And I'm the favourite customer. Lol

Pancakes were like thin pikelets fresh fruit was half a grape and two small bits of sour orange. No cream given. Must have new chef as this was a joke. Not hard to give at least a few pieces of fruit. Pikelets were rubbery and looked like they had been pikelets out of a packet and cooked. Not good enough, will go next door to Icocos next time

They need more staff, couldn't handle everyone's orders. 3 times getting our order wrong was a joke.. Then forgetting something we had paid for... 😖

You can't hide The Food Safety Grade. Disgusting!

Food is nice, but the place needs a good clean!

This is one of my favourite cafes in Auckland! The service is lovely, food is great and drinks. The coffee is yum but the iced drinks are an absolute standout - best iced mocha / coffee i have ever had! We've tried alot off the menu and the eggs benedict, the CLT and the savoury muffin are some of my favourites. Definitely worth giving this place a try!

Wasn’t expecting much from this place just wanted a quick breakfast close to home but was pleasantly surprised. Service was fast and food was delicious

Asked for vege risotto gave us the slightest bit of chicken fed through it. Also menu said two garlic breads. Only given one. Besides that Algood cafe. It's unfortunate that a religious vegetarian day was ruined like that.

In Blockhouse Bay on business and feeling the need for a snack, and I found The Bay Café. And what a find! Great coffee and the best cheese scone I’ve ever had. I like my scones with lashings of butter but I didn’t even open the butter for this one. The cheese scone stood on its own.

So it was back there for lunch and again the next day. I can recommend the rosti and the BLT – they happily replaced the bacon with sliced chicken for me and it was delicious.

Came here for a Sunday brunch and was not disappointed! The ambience was nice with inside and outside dining, the staff were friendly and the food is incredible value for money. I ordered a medium flat white which tasted great, along with the chicken quesadilla and a side of bacon. Only minor thing I would say that could have made the meal better was if the chicken was seasoned a little more as I feel it lacked a little flavour, but other than that I enjoyed my meal and will definitely be back again. Thanks!

found this place on Zomato over the weekend as I was new to the area. I had The Big B breakfast and it was fantastic! good portion sizes and cooked well.

Just over in the next suburb from my house so decided to pop in for a taste. The atmosphere was quite welcoming, the staff were polite and helpful. We were handed worn menus, mine had something weird smeared on it.
B ordered the mini breakfast (only $10) and a flat white. I ordered the B.L.A.T for $15.80. I grabbed a glass of water (the glass was severely scratched making it look kinda unhygienic) When then snagged a table outside. The furnishings in the shop do seem a little worn out but that may just be to create a homely feel? haha The coffee arrived not long after we were seated and the wait for food was short.
B’s coffee was very hot and strong. His breakfast was worth the $10; cute little samples from their big breakfast option -must have been tasty because he swallowed it! My B.L.A.T looked so good! The fries were a bit pasty and needed salt but were fresh and crispy. A few bites into my sandwich I had to add salt and pepper for more flavour. I swallowed it all though, it was good! The bacon was crispy, bread was soft and the avocado was creamy. Yum!
B went back to look at the cabinet selection that had a lot of tasty morsels for less than $5!! Came back with a chocolate cheesecake which was so sweet... we were lucky we shared! Would recommend.
With good service and tasty food this place would be rated higher if not for the let down of the crockery/furnishings and menus. Thank you, we will be back!

I went to cafe last week, I ordered French toast, my friend had one piece of chocolate cake n coffee. French toast is so soft n it goes very well with other components. My friend said coffee is great and chocolate cake is moist n delicious. The environment is clean and staffs are friendly. I definitely would recommend this place. Great experience!

This is the biggest big breakfast ever!!! I love their mushroom with the special sauce!!! They also have a pretty Asian coffee barista called Shannon who always gives good customer services. Really Enjoyed the time there ~~~

Absolutely LOVE The Bay, coffee is always awesome (Allpress beans) staff friendly and welcoming and the food is outstanding. Recommend this cafe for coffee and a sweet treat or a meal especially the waffles, the risotto and the carbonara!

The oasis in a desert of austerity! The Bay Cafe has layers... the Owner, staff and customers are engaged and always in the moment of a euphoric, culinary ambience.
The food is of high end quality delivered at cafe pricing, presentation always brings a smile to one's face. Whether just sitting in for full service or grabbing a takeaway beverage and snack you will not be disappointed.

Neat, clean little cafe. Food is solid fare, staff are very friendly. Nice place for lunch. Prices are affordable. Kiddie friendly play area for tots.

Delicious coffee and food!!! I tried the iced chocolate and bacon omelette, very nice!! Also great service! Recommend this place a 100% Will definitely come back again 😀😀

Their service is lovely, so as their food! We always come here every time we want to treat ourselves a good lunch! I love their beef quesadilla, their sandwiches, carbonara and iced coffee.

Went here as a little treat with my son and ordered the "mini breakfast" and "kids pancakes" along with a banana smoothie.

Overall, everything tasted delicious! The mini breakfast was just enough and for $10, you can't go wrong! The table next to me also raved about them!

As for the kids pancakes, they tasted fine however they came covered with maple syrup, berries, whipped cream and some form of berry coulis topped with a sprinkle of icing sugar, if I had know there was sugar after sugar on top of sugar I would've asked for plain pancakes with syrup on the side as these were for a young child.

I will definitely go back as it's within walking distance and the food was yummy overall, however I will be a little more cautious when ordering for my son and asking to make to order.
.
Come here quite often and I love the amount of choices! Savoury and sweet cabinet food~ Cakes, slices, brownies and more, including gluten free options aswell as a delicious All Day Menu for Breakfast and Lunch. Friendly service and excellent coffee. Great for kids, little play area and a nice kids menu.

Taste wise this was very good I ordered your classic mince on toast and my partner ordered the vegetarian sandwich, my meal was very tasty until I realised the hair I consumed as seen in the picture on the lower half of my mince which disturbed me slightly as I'm very anti germs I didn't realise it was in the meal until checking my photos which I had taken as soon as the plates were placed in front of me, the egg was perfectly poached, my coffee was terrible (I had to add three sugars) on a positive note the iced chocolate was really nice and the vegetarian sandwich with a side of fries was also tasty but not worth the extra money for the small amount minus the strange tasting aioli, presentation of the mince was very high class looking just a shame about the hair in my meal you should check that before serving next time, the staff were pleasant and meals were served quickly, atmosphere wasn't very busy, didn't let the hair put me completely off this cafe but they need to be more thorough and consistent with the drink quality.

Came here for lunch with my brother on Tuesday. The place was relatively busy for a Tuesday but our food came within 15 minutes. The service was fast and the girl serving us was very upbeat and cheery. I ordered the bacon and egg sandwich on foccacia bread with a side of chips, this was $10. The price was very reasonable especially considering the quantity. The sandwich was tasty but not unlike what I have tasted before, the bacon was crispy, egg well cooked and bread nicely toasted. The chips were a bit bland, maybe some flavouring or dip would cure that. My brother ordered the mini breakfast which he said was very good and left him full afterwards. This was again $10. Overall, the Bay Cafe is a quality cafe with reasonable prices and good service.

After a lovely walk with the dog and the husband around Waikōwhai Walkway, we stopped in at The Bay Cafe and decided on the $10 Mini Breakfast. It was amazingly delicious. Eggs, toast, tomato, mushrooms, hashbrowns, bacon and a kransky, topped off with a fine tasting cappuccino. Both my husband and I said it was one of the best breakfasts we have had in a long time. Yum!

Hubby and I just had lunch here with our 1 year old and really enjoyed it. We've been here quite a few times and it's always been good. The Buttermilk Hotcakes were yummy with lots of berries, bacon and banana; and the Chicken Quesadilla was delicious. We really loved the Iced Chocolates and they do good coffee too. Great friendly service, fast to get our order and a pleasant atmosphere. Will definitely be back!
Rebben
Lovely service and great play area for the little ones, but found food and milkshake to be disappointing. The taste of the cheese scone was good, but it was a rather flat scone. The milkshake was just milk and flavoured syrup.

Have been here a few times for coffee and decided to go for a brunch. Had a mixed experience with food, big breakfast was ok but chicken carbonara was nice. Service was good.

We came here for breakfast to try a different cafe and was very disappointed with the food... Not very good at all.... Very mediocre ....Haven't been back since.

We ordered an egg Benedict and steak open sandwich, it take so long time to serve, the steak is hard to cut and not easy to eat/chew, and the fries came with the sandwich is cold already. The dishes are messy, taste just so so. And so many flies around. Don't wanna come back anymore

May 2013 ...we went ... to the Bay Cafe. We discovered "Jason" the Manager… as we walked inside, the first thing we noticed (and commented on) was the background music, softly playing in the corner of the cafe/restaurant. The place had a lovely, light, friendly atmosphere and we explained to Jason we’d just had a bad experience elsewhere – and described it. He seated us at a lovely table, offered us a FREE coffee by way of trying to make up for our bad experience in the area [at another local cafe - see my other reviews]. We ordered the "all day breakfast" and it arrived in about 15min, meantime we'd been given a lovely ice cold bottle of water with glasses. Our meal was outstanding! Very worth the money!! We ordered extra coffee and commented on how lovely it was, very smooth and gorgeous flavour.
We were so taken with the service and the extremely professional manner of the staff that we wrote a letter to the Western Leader – and later took a copy to Jason for his cafe to know about…. Jason said that he was only visiting that day and there were new owners in now – he was off on a new venture with his wife (having a new family). We were very sad to see him go as we enjoyed popping in every week following our 'disastrous experience' and had become 'fond' of seeing his smiling face.
We have since been to The Bay Cafe many, many times. We always take our friends up there and, when our overseas guests arrive this month, we will be taking them also. This is the most outstanding cafe in the area…
There used to be a cafe next to the Post Shop but that closed down and became a Sushi Shop. We miss the friendly service from the old cafe but we are thrilled with the gem that we have found in The Bay Cafe! The new people are just as friendly and professional, the food is just as great….
There is only 1 feedback comment we would offer and that is that they attempt to get some floor rugs to absorb the echo of people's talking. Since the lovely refurbishment (which is really great to see!) the noise has increased a little in the cafe and it can play havoc with people's hearing aids. Due to safety, it may not be practical to have 'floor rugs' but definitely putting down some kind of mats in safe areas where they won't be tripped up on, would be a good idea. Not a criticism though. This place is very hard to find fault with!

I went to The Bay cafe for brunch with a group of 7. The staff member greeted me by name (from my booking) which was nice. The food was great and the service also. I would go back if in the area again.

Best vegetarian nachoes I have EVER eaten! I am pretty predictable in ordering these off a menu when going out for dinner, these were well made, very tasty and generous in the portion. My child had pancakes which looked lovely, well presented and also generous.
The staff were lovely and we were made to feel very welcome the moment we walked in.
I purposefully went to tell them they were the best nachoes and was greeted with a heartfelt thank you.
Will definitely be going back for those nachoes!

I enjoyed popping into Barefoot when I was out this way with two littlies in tow. We found a good spot to sit, where we could easily hear each other talk. I liked that the mezzanine area with tables is far enough away from the coffee machine, and the floor coverings seem to absorb noise - so hearing each other chat away was no problem - great!

The girls were happy with their 'chicken nuggets and chips', even though I almost managed to up-sell them to some fresh and tasty-looking tomato, lettuce, ham multigrain club sandwiches in the cabinet which looked great... but when I found out about the aforementioned kids meal, they were hooked on that instead!

I enjoyed a vegetarian sandwich - which was a range of nicely roasted veges on thick focaccia, with just the right amount of melted cheese. Salting it well to my liking, I very much enjoyed the flavours.

The lovely coffee was great.
It was good to have a wee basket of toys in the corner for the girls to quietly potter with after they'd eaten.

One downside to those great noise-friendly floor coverings, is that they're getting quite well-used. So maybe time for a spruce up of the matting sometime soon?

But aside from that, we found the amenities were clean, the staff were smiley and very helpful. And of course free parking in the street made it all nice and easy.

Friendly service, place was busy which is always a good sign

This is a lovely little place. Friendly service, good food. I had a delicious soup that was on special on that day. My friend enjoyed her food also. I would love to go back sometime and try something else from the menu. Would not hesitate to recommend.

Barefoot In The Bay Cafe, what can i say, I highly recommend this great cafe all the time. Best coffee around, great food with a extensive brunch lunch menu and a wide range of cabinet food. The Mushroom Linguine is to die for as to their full breakfast, the cafe style fries we love. Iced Chocolates are a favourite with our kids. Love the atmosphere, a great place to meet up with friends or if just quickly calling in for a great take away coffee. The Manager and staff are very friendly they go that extra mile to please you, now this is service and with a smile. Visit this great cafe in the bay if you love good food, fantastic coffee and great service.

Natalie C.

I haven't tried the food, but they do very good iced coffee. It is a popular cafe especially on Market Days (last Saturday of the month) and it's worth waiting for a table.

We enjoyed a superb dinner at Barefoot in the Bay. There were 7 of us and everyone really loved the meal the meal they chose. I had the lamb shanks and the meat was superbly tender and well presented. The service was excellent and the restaurant was not too busy or noisy so we were able to enjoy a relaxed friendly family dinner. Thanks Rita and team.

Feeling adventures we headed to cafe in Blockhouse Bay. We were astonished at this great little cafe that we discovered in Blockhouse Bay Village. The Service was incredible. Our Waiter was Helpful and delightful. The Breakfast Menu had great options, and the food was amazing. Will definitely be returning!

Having recently moved to the area we'd been looking for somewhere for weekend brunch and evening suppers when we didn't want to have to cook. Barefoot is such a find and we're really happy to recommend it to others (though not too many though otherwise we won't be able to get in......). Really friendly staff, fast and efficient service and great food and coffee. Parking is easy and right outside, but we're within walking distance anyway. Great place to meet friends as it's easy to get to, doesn't have the crush of Titirangi and has loads of other shops around so you can get all your other bits and pieces before heading home. Excellent work everyone at Barefoot - thanks for making The Bay an even better place to be!

We pop in regularly for a coffee or tea and yummy snack, but went for dinner the other night. It was a revelation! The fries were superb, Dad and daughter had the steak which was tender and delicious, and I had the risotto of the day (spinach and smoked salmon) which was creamy and sublime. Pudding won hands down though - the most gooey and scrummy brownies we have ever tasted, beautifully presented with cream, ice cream and a velvet smooth berry coulis - top class. Would definitely recommend!

Barefoot in the Bay is an undiscovered Gem. They are local, the parking is a breeze, e.g Thursday night parked right out the front!
The staff are all very friendly and helpful.
The food is extremely good, compliments to the chef. Tried the fish of the day and the ribs last night all of which both loved and well the brownie, it is always good there.
To anyone that has not been, I suggest you pop in, whether just for a coffee, lunch or dinner.
Tracey Ashton
I have been going to barefoot quite a lot recently as found its a great place to meet clients for coffee, its not too noisy, the staff arent trying to hurry you along to clear the table and there is heaps of free parking. All in all much easier to get to than the hustle and bustle of Titirangi.
Food was lovely and found the staff to be really friendly. Since the new owners have taken over this place has really started to shine with the new decor and menu - well done guys keep up the good work.
Karin
Excellent local cafe. Staff are friendly and welcoming, environment clean and tidy and the food is well priced and delicious. Have been back several times, and will continue to visit.
Steph
Be wary of the black pepper! We each had the steak sandwich with fries (an extra $2) and everything was liberally coated in black pepper, even the few fries that we'd paid extra for. We also ordered two apple juices and it wasn't until they arrived that we realised they were freshly squeezed, we just thought we'd get the Phoenix ones out of the fridge we could see. The staff didn't give us the option.
This was out first visit to this cafe although we live locally and we won't be back. Yes it was clean, parking was easy and the staff reasonably welcoming but the food was disappointing.
