Review Penny Fish & Chips Takeaway - Auckland

Robyn Brown
A scoop of chips was smaller/overpriced than other outlets but the terakihi was lovely

As good as any fish and chip shop in Auckland. We typically have fish, chips, potato and pineapple fritters, fish cakes and spring rolls, and all of it is top quality every time. The fish in particular is what matters most to me and it is always cooked just right - firm, with a crisp batter. Generous servings and friendly staff.

Out of all the fish and chip shops this is definitely a gourmet selection. Bit pricey but so worth every cent we drive out 3 times a year from pukekohe just to have this best option for me is the battered oysters can still taste the ocean juicy and fat. Chips perfect, fish wasn't to bad hot dog was great and so was the burgers!! Great service overall great shop!

The toasted sandwiches are the best thing at this shop. Apart from being white bread, they are good portions and taste pretty good. The gourmet burgers aren't bad either, if you can afford one. The guy on the hot plate takes care about his cooking and he even fries the cheese, but the classic steak and egg burger has no meat paddy, the lettuce isn't fresh and the egg is always way overcooked. The fish is fresh, but the batter is a bit disappointing. The oysters tasted a bit off too. The chips are ok, but you really don't get much for your money. I mean, how much does it cost them for a little bit of potatoe? It would have been n nice to walk away feeling full, but overall, not a bad place to go. The staff have always been really friendly. With a few improvements, this place could be awesome. Let's hope they read these reviews

The most amazing burgers and chips. I ordered the crumbed chicken burger and an angus burger. Great size, good value and the chicken wasn't processed! Perfect place to stop in and grab food to take to the domain. I will definately be back to try more from the menu.

This place goes above and beyond with their toasted sandwiches. 4 stars because they always seem to overcook the fried food. Delish otherwise đź‘Ś

IMHO best burgers in Auckland. Scotch fillet burger always a perfect medium rare. Cheese melted on the hotplate before adding to burger makes all the difference, so too simple but very fresh salad.

Penny is our regular take away shop. The food is good quality and tasty. There are vegetarian hot dogs which are really nice. Not as cheap as a provincial take away shop but still good value for being in Remuera/Newmarket/Parnell.

Not super cheap, and the portions aren’t huge, but we struggled to finish it - it was all good though so we persisted! The Tarakihi impressed us by not being soggy. Will absolutely stop by here again next time I’m staying in Parnell.

Sandwiches and burgers were great. Chips were a bit over fried though. Otherwise would have been 5 stars for my experience.

Great fish and chips, as well as burgers. Classic fry up takeaways. Parking can be a bit problematic during rush hours

I haven’t lived at home in NZ for many years, and always say one of the things I miss is the fish & chips. Tried Penny at random, and they didn’t disappoint. Very clean oil, high quality ingredients and perfectly prepared. As good as, or better than, fish & chips I’ve had anywhere. Excellent.

This is a very interesting takeaway on Parnell Road, a short distance from Newmarket. They have a very good range of fast food options with a friendly customer service.

Haven't been here in a while, but their toasted sandwiches are really good. Three pieces of bread with salad as well as the toppings you order. Burgers are generally pretty good, and so are the chips. Haven't tried the fish.

I came here about 6 months ago and the fish and chips were amazing but went tonight and was Appalled! I never leave reviews but I was so disgusted that I had to. The half scoop of chips was literally 12 chips and the cheeseburger was so gross I threw it out! I don't even think it was actual beef in the patties it tasted off. The lettuce was limp and the bun, although toasted, was noticeably stale. Avoid this place!!! YUCK!!

I've been to this fish and chip store a few times since moving to this neighbourhood  haven't tried a proper burger from here. Their chips are good, but they are much better at corn fritters and/or American style hot dogs.

Decent burgers and good service. At the location there are hardly any fish and chips place these guys definitely know how to do the business right. Price is great for the portions they serve. I usually go here to pick up lunch sometimes and am always content. I won't say they are the best and make the most delicious burgers, but for the price and taste, quality and service is excellent.

With a range of vegan/vegetarian options including a tofu toasted sammie, this is the place to go if you are needing your fix of greasy food. Cheap and cheerful food, though can't say the same for the owner, (cheerful) as she is very abrupt.

We came here one Monday night with our friends from overseas who have not had fish and chips before. <br/>Unfortunately the service wasn't the best. My friend advised the owner that we're ordering separately but it will be quite big. The owner rolled her eyes. <br/><br/>The batter on the fish and deep fried food was a bit too brown for my liking. <br/>The milkshake was blended for too long and went too creamy and not enough syrup was used. <br/><br/>The food was ok. I will be coming back only because it's the only takeaway place in Parnell

Stumbled upon this place by accident and I definitely did not regret it.<br/><br/>Love the fish and chips, now that I have read other people's comments, it seems that my hunch about their awesome fish and chips is true.<br/><br/>Not sure about other food on the menu but the fish and chips is great!

Went there with my wife and kids yesterday. We had 4 of the best cooked pieces of fish I have had in Auckland. Really moist fish, light crisp batter and really good portion size for fish. It would be nice if there was a family meal option, but we will definitely be back.

This place used to be known as Al & Pete's takeaways, where they specialized in fish & chips, burgers and toasted sandwiches.  The change of ownership has taken place but the menu is still the same with additional items like spring rolls etc.  I have had the fish and chips here and it's pretty good, but I much prefer their toastie sandwiches.  <br/><br/>They make them in 3 layers with lettuce, tomato and mayo with your choice of filling.  The portions of the chips and wedges are also very good and it's somewhere that I would go to almost everyday if I could.  <br/><br/>Their burgers are not like the gourmet styles but still tastes good.

The Best Burgers in town.<br/>- Collossus Burger - Massive Steak Egg and Cheese burger<br/>- Whale - Fish Burger<br/><br/>I visit this often, last time was Thursday 13th September 2012.<br/><br/>The quality is always consistent.<br/><br/>Only gripe is they close at 10pm with no late Fri or Sat.<br/><br/>Menu Mania wants me to write more text, but why? in this case less is more, it is not a candle-lit dining experience... the ambience is... well... classic Fish &amp; Chip shop - a la - Burger Bar!

Great burgers. But I have one main thing to say; "Bring back the Gutbuster!"<br/> This burger satisfied my hunger. Had all the meats and veges I wanted. And the perfect size, a picnic dinner plate.

Excellent local Fish n Chips/ Burger shop. I can particularly recommend the fish burgers and the triple decker toasted sandwiches.

Just A-OK, not brilliant but certainly better value than fancy chippies in St Heliers. <br/><br/>Terakihi and chips for two under $15.

Considering this is a fish and chips place and mainly a takeaway, the value for money is really good and the quality of the fish is great. I would not have the sausage again but the fish and chips is great. Don`t go for nothing else!
