Review Bungalo Cafe - Birkenhead

Emily Rose P
I've visited twice with a group of friends, and we had a great experience both times. After the first visit I made a comment that I'd like a different vegan option and the next time they told me a new vegan option (sounded good but I wanted something warmer due to the weather) and were really helpful in ensuring my meal was vegan. Chris was super friendly, as was the woman working (didn't get her name) and did his best to make sure we were all happy! We are definitely planning to return Food pictured: vegan warrior (without mushrooms) and the bagel with hummus and tomato with the "wake up smoothie" (without honey)

Great cafe ! Large breakfast/brunch/lunch menu with good prices. Yummy cabinet food and hot/cold drink selection ! Picnic tables, covered patio and indoor seating to accommodate quite a few people. I had the ginger latte and the “feel good” breakfast it was so unique and delicious ! The staff is so friendly and helpful :)
The Duvals
Very busy little cafe but it is worth the wait. The coffee is just the right amount of kick in the morning. All the food coming out the kitchen looked amazing. Staff were very friendly and trying to work as quickly as possible. There is a lovely outside seated area which is covered and uncovered to enjoy on the warmer days. Great little breakfast post.

Ice choc here is my favorite. Carrot cake was good. My sandwich was a bit chewy and I did't like the porridge. Nice view and service.

Had a really nice time at Bungalo Cafe. The staff were very friendly and went the extra mile wherever they could. The flat white and iced coffees were really tasty. The flat white wasn't bitter and the iced coffee wasn't overly sweet like other places. The Bongalo (Big Breakfast) was delicious. Everything was good quality, flavourful and complimented each other really well. I would recommend going here for a sit-down meal with friends or just popping in to grab a takeaway coffee. Thanks for the enjoyable time team.

Chris and his team provided the perfect location for a get-together with some friends who were over from Perth. The food was divine and the place was clean and comfortable. We were there chatting for a couple of hours while we enjoyed some nutritious and tasty meals. Happy to recommend!!

Owner Chris helms a fantastic cafe. Outdoor and indoor seating. Everything on the menu seems great. I would highly recommend it. Love the smoothie (green 💚 smoothie with a hint of ginger was very refreshing), chicken salad was delicious, croque madame and spice hash were tasty.

I booked and I got the table, great coffee, service and hospitality. Good ambiance too, a bit crowded on a weekend so make sure to book a table. My friend loves their eggs bene and open omelette, unfortunately my Vegan warrior kale is not fresh produce. A bit stale and no flavour, hardly trying to finish it thinking no to wasting food. I will come back and try the other menu.

A nice surprise. Converted house with parking round the back, very tight but its there. Service is excellent and food was generous and tasty. Even busy they did well. Baccon and egg pie from the cabinet with a sausage roll and salad. Great! The cheese scone was ok. Will go back!

Popped in for breakfast with my partner, it was busy but managed to get a table without booking. He got the salmon and I got the kale omelette. The omelette had kale, caramelised onion and brie. I love all 3 of those ingredients but it was a bit too sweet for me, could have used a bit more kale to balance it out. Overall food was great and so were the drinks (grabbed a coffee and a raspberry iced tea), the service was also great with all the staff we interreacted with being really friendly and helpful.

Give 4 stars for using coffee beans from atomic😋

Staff/service: 4/5
Venue: 4/5
Price/portion: 3.9/5

Was a busy cafe. All table is full and we waited 15min for a table.

I had the spiced hash brown which I swapped the bacon for mushrooms @$19. The hash brown have a kick of spice which is nice. Husband ordered the beef burger @$19.50. Food here is about normal and nothing fantastic. We went to the Bungalo in Birkenhead last week for lunch. It is situated in a old house with a range of seating inside and outside, and ample off-road parking. We sat inside at a corner window table with fantastic views of the harbour and the bridge. We ordered the Big breakfast ($20.50) and the Spicy hash cake ($19.50). Both meals were tasty, substantial and extremely good value. The hash cake was indeed very spicy and tasty and went perfectly with the fried eggs, bacon and avocado salad. The big breakfast lived up to its name, with generous servings of all elements, and was one of the best that we have had. The service was also very efficient. We recommend that you visit the Bungalo and we will certainly be back to try other options on the menu.

We came for brunch yesterday with the kids, my usual French Toast it's really nice as usual so is the beef burger. The kids mac n cheese are tasteless and full of cream with hardly any cheese.

I had the eggs bene which was pretty average - eggs were cooked too long so no runny yolk whatsoever and a strong taste of vinegar, the muffin thing they were on tasted stale.

My partners dish looked ok but again pretty basic.

I wouldn’t come back here again anytime soon.

Came for brunch on Wednesday. Cozy little cafe with nice outdoor setting area. Ordered the big bungalo breakfast, eggs bene with salmon and iced coffee. Didn't wait too long for food. The Bungalo breakfast was delicious! Had nice variety of everything and cooked well. Eggs bene with salmon was ok, bread was bit too dry/floury tasting for me but others might prefer it. Iced coffee was nice and big. Total meal was only $26.50. Will come back again :)

Great food and location in Birkenhead / always consistent and friendly - especially nice on a hot sunny day.

It’s hard to find a great consistent coffee and bene.

Recommend!

As you can see from the omelette and hash brown, food here is pretty average in terms of the taste and presentation. The price they charge is a bit too much for the quality and/or the quality of the food.

Came in for a late lunch today after visiting the Chelsea sugar factory. Ordered the spiced hashbrown and the creamy mushrooms with zomato gold. The creamy mushrooms were quite big and the toast was 5 grain. There were two slices that came with it, one was soaked up in sauce already and the other was half soaked. If you like soggy bread then that is the dish for you but otherwise you should probably ask for your bread on the side. Sauce was really good though. Food took a while to come out but staff were nice and friendly. Spiced hashbrown tasted quite crispy but the cheese inside wasn't melted enough. Eggs were perfectly cooked. Avocado and tomato was a great addition to the dish.

My friend recommend here so we come for breakfast. It's a small cute cafe. Not too much decor but really busy. Smoothie was good, egg on toast taste ok , porridge just not my type but ingredients were fresh.

Decided to try out this little cute cafe on Mokoia Road, it has one small corner window overlooking the City. Would make a great view if they extend the windows. Have a great courtyard if you want to sit outside. Food is okay. We had the big brekkie and mince on toasts. The coffee is alright too. I had better beetroot latte elsewhere. Food took a while though and it wasn’t that busy. We got 25%off with Entertainment Book. So total bill came to less than $40 for two.

Creamy pesto mushrooms are a big yesssss, along with the cold brew coffee with soda water. Lots of dogs here which is always a win in my books.
Denise
Went here for a late breakfast with a friend and enjoyed The Bungalo, which was their full breakfast. Really good with the scambled eggs option. Friend had the Spiced Hash Brown, however she couldn't finish it due to too much cheese, but that might be a good thing for others. Food was nice and fresh and service was good, so we will be back.
Melissa Blanc
Not bad. Pretty good eggs benny. Only thing I didn't like was that the eggs tasted strongly of vinegar. If it weren't for that, the meal would have been a lot better.

Great Cafe-Great Food-Great Service

The guy who is responsible for this and another cafe in Birkenhead is a very nice chap who understands great service and great food.

Bungalow is always good, it’s a very laidback cafe, that locals won’t drive past without grabbing something.

Staff are great
Food great
Coffee great

It’s a little on the small side but I guess it is called bungalow after all!

Came here for breakfast as it had reviewed pretty well on here lately. A bit disappointed really, coffee was bitter and too hot and poached eggs were hard. Pretty average all in all, with all the cafes in this area they need to up their game.
Jaffa
Popular cafe just up from Birkenhead mall-they make great coffee and have a fab view.

We don’t often eat full breakfast here but it’s good food-the French toast is a popular dish and for good reason it’s huge, sweet and tasty as anything.

The spicy hash with eggs and bacon also a good find.

Staff are friendly and they have a room for large groups (hopefully you can book this table in advance). Popular in summer as they have a good deck you can sit on too.

Really nice food, lovely place and amazing service. Ordered and within 10 minutes food was ready and delicious. Strongly recommend The Fritz and the Pulled Pork Burger
Mike
Went here or brunch ....I ordered the pulled pork burger and wedges ( extremely small serving of wedges ??,,for goodness sake potatoes 🥔 don't cost much ...seems to be the latest craze by cafes to give undersize chips or wedges portions ?),,,,/and the bun should have been lightly toasted not fresh ?,,,they were soggy ( buns ),,half way through the meal ....not much crunchy lettuce ...and not much else except some stringy pork with too much sauce .... not been picky but I could go to burger Wisconsin or burger fuel and get a much bigger burger and fries for the same .....mentioned this to the waitress ..she gave a shrug ....upon paying ...🙁

Went here for a quick breaky on a Saturday mid-morning and was pleasantly surprised at the friendly helpful service, good portion sizes and nice uncomplicated breakfast food - not overly expensive either. Loved the laid back unpretentious atmosphere as well. Our long blacks were a little bitter but we were so stoked with everything else it didn't bother us. This is sure to be our local from now on.
Dini
The staff are friendly depending on the day, the drinks are good and can be made dairy free. It always seems like there's not a lot of personality indoors but is always nice outside in summer

Very upset that I have just eaten raw chicken. Praying I don't get food poisoning. Ordered 2 chicken salads with a side of wedges. Looked very unappealing when it came out, wedges were just soggy and some of the potatoes were brown. After a few mouthfuls of my salad realised the chicken was still raw. Waitress was apologetic and gave me my money back however feel as if the whole meal should have been refunded. Will never go back!

Have been lots and service is sometimes good sometimes awful. Unfortunately not a lot of better choices nearby.they often run out of things so best to go early.menu is quite limited but generally food taste and execution is good. Coffee generally very good. Ordered wedges but very disappointed as there were only 8 wedges for $9. There must be gold inside the potatoes...

Dined here for brunch with a friend. This cafe is in the heart of Birkenhead & is set in a lovely old Bungalow, hence the name. There is a lovely deck out the front of the building with plenty of outdoor seating & from the rear of the building there's an awesome view of the city & the water. There's a decent menu with a range of cabinet food, breakfast & lunch meals. The prices are reasonable enough too. My friend & I both had the French toast, to drink I had a mocca & my friend had a mango smoothie. There isn't much to comment on sound service, the staff were polite enough however this is the sort of place where you order at the counter & pour your own water, so really they only take your order & serve your food & drinks. We weren't waiting long for our meals & we both enjoyed our food. The portion size is huge & everything on the dish was pleasant enough, the coffee was average. Overall we left satisfied I would possibly return to try some more of the menu

Great cafe with a nice setting. Watch out the portion sizes are big! We got told afterwards you could get half portions. I got The Fritz and my wife got French toast. Recommend both.

Bungalo must be a popular cafe among the locals with quite a lot of customers at lunch. We had grilled chicken salad (with some crispy noodles), pulled pork burger, ginger & pear cake, & coffees. Grilled chicken was on the down side - chicken was too tough (maybe thighs would make a better dish) & the noodles didn't appeal to me. Otherwise everything else was good. Ginger & pear cake was particularly lovely.

I work here, and no, no one asked me to do a review, that's just silly!
I take full responsibility for it and any outcome!

I'm doing this one for the team of this place.
A bunch of people that always work passionately hard to get better at what we do.
Sure, we had some problems and they are currently being fixed.
Really, I'm giving it a 5.0 because you guys are awesome and I am extremely proud to be part of this team!
We will push harder to continue on getting better at what we do and to achieve our goals and customers satisfaction!
Proud of you team!
Chef Eder.

Considering this place is so busy I thought it would be great. I have to go back there from time to time as my networking group meets there. The staff are my main issue. I've often got to the counter to place an order and have a staff member say hi, and I'm just about to reply when they literally run off to do something else. Even if they could say just moment before they dash off as I'm in the middle of an order that would be something. Perhaps they are literally run off their feet but I find it rude. Not a great selection of food either.

Food was great. However the service not so much.

We were left waiting nearly an hour for our breakfast and had to remind the staff about our order. Sure it was busy, but which decent cafe isn't? An hour long wait is unacceptable when you turn up on an empty stomach.
I have been to Bungaloo a few times with family & my partner, the service is great and so is the food!

It is a great place to pop in for a coffee with your fur buddy, or if you're after one of the best eggs bene's in Auckland!

The staff are fantastic & when it's busy they do a fantastic job at being efficient and making everyone comfortable!
Jessica
Went here with my family and it was so busy I found it very hard to talk and have a conversation with everyone cause the tables are all very close together. I had the feel good meal for breakfast and it was okay. I personally wouldn't bother coming back here. I find there are so many other nice places to eat for breakfast instead in Birkenhead.

Always a great brekkie and a fantastic latte. Particularly adore the Fritz (vege fritter with poached eggs and bacon topped with aoli) but basically everything here is consistently great. Lovely staff, quick service, beautiful city view. Make this place your local 😎

This is our go to place particularly for the coffee on Saturday Morning. We have eaten her on several occasions for breakfast, brunch & lunch. Burgers are great, big breakfast is great too. Service is always prompt.Sundays can be a busy day here but if the sun is out then sitting on th@ table on the grass is great. Pretty of space inside or on the covered decks. Very child friendly with highchairs & they make great Fluffys so the kids will be kept well entertained.

Pretty mint experience on a chilly sat morning! Eggs benny sure sent that hangover to someplace else! Fantastic coffee, brill chill service and k am obsessed with the feature wall! Might suggest heaters for winter tho as was a wee bit chilly! Great cafe team can't wait to return

I love this local cafe, I go there all the time and often hold client meetings there. The staff are always helpful and friendly, the food is great and the coffee excellent. I'm also partial to the green smoothie. They are obviously a well-liked cafe in this neighbourhood as it's often bustling and has a great energy to it. Never been disappointed.

My husband and I spend a lot of time in cafes, and once we found Bungalo, with its FAB food and coffee (note: we are uber-fussy ex-Ponsonby-dwelling coffee connoisseurs) and its brilliantly friendly, happy and eager-to-please staff, it has become our local. They have a massive variety of options for breakfast and lunch, including the usual essentials like eggs benedict, but also some creative and uber-healthy options too. If there is ever a requirement to swap out an ingredient, make something bigger or smaller, or ANYTHING wrong with a meal or coffee, they are MORE than happy to make it right! BIG UPS to Chris and the team for being our Top Cafe on the shore.

This cafe always looks busy- so my friend persuaded me o try it out for breakfast. I was very unhappy that I gave in and went. Ordered 'The Bungalo' half-size (but not half price). First of all had to wait a very long time- 25 mins. Seems like a long wait to me for just a normal full breakfast. Now I am a big fan of a full breakfast, and in a good one, i am looking for a tasty sausage, good scrambled eggs and a crispy hashbrown. Not too much to ask or a fancy cafe, right?? Wrong!!! If you see the pic, I got half a sliver of oily tasteless 'rosti'- it was so bad I was happy at getting only half after i tasted it. The sausage was really good- lots of rosemary- and thats why the review score is 2- not 1. Next time I will stick with my usual breakfast place- it charges less, gives me better AND more, and all with a smile.

Best place in Birkenhead for breakfast. My favourite are the eggs benedict with salmon and spinach and normally I order mushrooms as an additional side to it. Perfectly cooked eggs and delicious holondaise and veggies. Soy flat white is very nice. Food and drinks get served quickly and service is friendly and welcoming. We go there frequently with our sleepover family visitors.
Michaela
Nice simple cafe with good coffee and delicious food. The wait is never too long and the staff always friendly. Parking can be a struggle if you want to meet with people. The tables seem too jammed together so the option of bean bags out side gives a nice homey touch.

Always wanted to go any try Bungalo as its literally a converted Bungalo into a cafe! Food is simple and tasty. We had the chicken salad (the new man food of 2016) and eggs with toast and a little Greek salad thing on the side plus we had home made lemonade (big ups to Cafes that make it home made)
Mara Andrea Martinez
One of the best coffees on the North Shore. Bought coffee here a few times while waiting for morning traffic to die down. Also had the French toast, though I couldn't finish it (serving size is massive), I definitely enjoyed it. Good place for value and quality.
Sandra
So great here! Good coffee and food! The staff are also friendly and although it's busy, I've never had to wait long for a seat and to be served. Great to have somewhere good, that's local.
Chelsea Mae Smith
So delicious!! Amazing breakfast with the family! Would recommend. Great service and friendly staff. I had the Feel Good breakfast and throughly enjoyed it.
SK
Coffee on point, every time! Consistently friendly, helpful service with a smile! Banana cake and vegetable frittata are delicious, highly recommend The Fritz also. Best local cafe.
Cindy Ong
It is a good place to hang out with friends. The coffee is good and I like their french toast! If you look for something light, go for their fruit salad.

Mothers day

One of the biggest days on a cafe calendar.
You would think you would stock up on the most popular meals. But no!
No English muffins for eggs Benedict
No glasses for water
No french toast
This all before 11am

But not all negative coffee was loverly venue beautiful.

Maybe u just caught u on a off day.

My partner and i took my daughter and grand daughter out for coffee today and after researching different places we came across this place.
Started out good, arrived and the place looked great!
We ordered our drinks and eats and sat down at the table and chatted away until our order came out. A couple of mouth fulls into my Latte and hello whats this... a blow fly under the froth on top, hmmm, ok... so i took it back and the Staff said "sorry we will replace that for you." Next Latte came out and after mixing in the sugar my grand daughter says the same thing ..."there's a blowie in my chocolate", cept she had almost drunk half of hers!
Up to the counter we go again and after asking the staff whats going on here was told they were busy and they would make my grand daughter another...To me one would of thought after having two drinks with two non paying guests aboard, one might almost warrant a refund, but no, just a sorry and a another drink.
Sad to say both of us didn't want to risk finding more unwanted guests in our drinks and we didn't end up drinking them ..... maybe something to watch out for!

We visited this place the Sunday just gone and on first impressions it was a great location, we were there at 9am i because our little one gave us an early wake up call!. We were greeted nicely and the drinks came out nice and promptly and the quality was fantastic, I started with a berry smoothie and it was great, nice fresh ingredients and well presented. Onto the food - I had the standard eggs bene with bacon and my partner had the porridge and a toast selection for baby, the food was fantastic - I will go out on a limb and say it's the best and freshest eggs bene I have ever had in a Cafe on the North Shore, the spinach was wilted perfectly both eggs were cooked to perfection the hollandaise sauce was perfect the bagel toasted just right and the bacon not to crispy, I would recommend this place and defiantly worth a visit, I'm sure I will be back.
Kim Ormsby
Came here with my partner on a busy Saturday morning, lovely atmosphere, service was really good, friendly staff, we ordered the Bungalo Breakasts, flat white and smoothie. Food was great, coffee great, the only small thing would be the smoothie came out lukewarm, where I think it should have been ice cold, but will definitely come back, staff, location fab.
Kathryn Lee
This is our go to Brunch location, food is consistently great, coffee varies from good to excellent depending on who you get behind the machine, views are amazing, service is good, no bad options on the menu, we have tried all of them. Often busy, but usually fine to get a seat.
Richard J
Coffee is inconsistent at best which is a great shame.
Food is great but bring a snack to tide you over till it arrives ...
Sonya Thorpe
Great Coffee as they use Atomic.
Vicki White
Went there last weekend for brunch. Very very average food. (In fact my eggs Benedict that I cook at home are better than here) coffee very good, but when there is soooo much great cafe on the point would go back.
Todd Perry
I went here last weekend with a friend. The coffee was delicious and the food was to a good standard. The only downside was the service, it was very very slow and the waiter clearly didn't want to be there. The coffee arrived at a good pace but be prepared to wait for food. Only three stars based on the hour+ wait and grumpy waiter.
Antoinette Cassrels
Excellent coffee. They know how to make a long black. Great service.
Rachelle Roxburgh
Good food and great service! My sisters and I went there for brunch today and they went out of their way to accommodate my two sisters, one who is a vegetarian and another who is pregnant.

I had their bacon and egg pie and salad which was really good.

We'll definitely be back :)
Lucien
By far one of the best cafes around .. The food and coffee are exceptional. The atmosphere is awesome .. The staff are so attentive and fun and the place is always busy
Adele La Trobe
A friend took me for my first visit last weekend and after enjoying their french toast I took my husband there yesterday.

Meals were wonderful but our only complaint would be the bacon was cremated a little for our liking, so much so that you couldn't get a fork through it.

Overall it's a beautiful place to sit on the deck in the sunshine and enjoy a nice coffee.
Christine Thackwell
Just alright. Not bad not great. Not much atmosphere. Like so many in the area...
Daryl Clune
This cafe is situated with easy access to parking, both onsite and street parking and has lovely views from inside the cafe itself.
It portraits a rustic, yet modern look that provides a warmth like a sunny winters day.

I would rate the staff as friendly, apart from seeming to wear their stress on their sleeves, they still manage to display a welcoming smile.

I purchased a Latte, which arrived promptly in a glass. The presentation of the coffee looked as good as it tasted, full of a mildly roasted coffee bean flavor topped with good milk consistency and foam.

The Judah Burger I ordered sounded nice from the description on the chalkboard, however failed to deliver on both quality and value. When the meal finally arrived, it was a very small burger served alone, on an oversized cold plate. The Judah Burger lacked flavors other than a slight burnt singe with the bacon. The chicken was bland and dry and left me disappointed and out of pocket by nearly $20 Unfortunately, while their service and coffee was adequate, they let themselves down with the quality of food they produce and it's associated value. If its a decent coffee with friends on a sunny weekend afternoon, this place is for you. Just don't order from their food menu.
Brunchalicious
Went there for the first time for breakfast and brunch. The place looks shabby chique, like quite a few places really ... So nice but not unique. Staff were friendly and efficient. Food was great. I had the French toast and it was delish! I didn't leave the table on an empty stomach, loved the crispy bacon ( asked for crispy bacon but staff told me the bacon was already crispy... It did appear he was slightly offended I would have thought otherwise... But maybe I was just overly sensitive:-) the maple Sirup was the real thing and the vanilla bean yoghurt condiment refreshing and complimenting . I will go again!
