Review Thai Yum - Birkenhead

First time trying Thai food as a Canadian in New Zealand. It was highly recommended you me by a local here as 'the best place for Thai food in Auckland'. Overall the food was good and they were able to accommodate to my spice levels (haha). I ordered the beef black garlic, chicken pineapple fried rice, tofu drunken noodles, and shrimp red Thai curry with a side of rice (at an additional cost of $2 NZD), to try to get a variety of food. My favorite was the drunken noodles, which was a very Thai classic mix of spicy, salty, sweet, and sour. I found the red Thai curry a bit too runny and watered down for my liking, but it was very flavorful otherwise. Overall, I would go back again when I'm craving some Thai food! PS: Parking is quiet limited at this location.

Friendly staff, decent pricing. They were happy to make almost anything on the menu in a vegan version meaning we had a lot of options Dinner for four and enough leftovers for everyones lunch the next day came to around $80 for vege dishes Will definitely go back

Vegan friendly if you ask. Would be nice to see some vegetarian and vegan options on their menu though. Meal was delicious. Good range of veges and well balanced flavours. I had the green curry with tofu, served Thai hot ('Pet!').

They make the best Thai food and great service. I had a mistake on my order and they offered to drop the correct item to our house. Thank you! 😁

Super tasty and well priced. Food was very good and decent spice levels which was nice. Plenty left over for lunch the next day also!

Just ordered the yellow and green curry and roti , soooooooo good and fresh ingredients , beef on noodles not my cup of tea but getting the curries again 5/5

I eat here many times, and the food is always delicious! Very consistent quality each and every time, and the wait time for takeaway is unbelievably quick - approx 5 mins (7 at most). The staff are super friendly too, and always remember me and my usual order. Mostly a takeaway place, but does provide a cosy atmosphere with some seating for those that wish to eat there. Huge menu selection.

Loved it and would go again, reasonable price

Ordered takeaway vegetarian satay and rice - after opening and serving it up I realised they’d given me chicken! They replaced the meal but charged me for another rice which was pretty cheeky. Unfortunately not a great experience and the food wasn’t amazing either.

Been here a number of times over the years, on this occasion we ordered the Mixed Entrees, Thai Red Curry w/ Pork and Rice, and the Pad Thai w/ Beef to takeaway. <br/><br/>Everything was amazing; delicious, fresh flavours and great portion sizes for the price, which is significantly lower compared to some other Thai spots. <br/><br/>Really friendly and fast service as well.

Very tasty, and reasonably priced! Glad to have found a place that does a nice yellow curry which has a nice balance of potatoes, Kumara, and carrots and not just chock full of onions. This has become a regular takeaway spot for us.

My favourite local Thai. Yum flavours and friendly service. Usually order pad see ew which is amazing, even vegetarian! Keen to try more dishes :)

My go to Thai! Always great and reliable - their peanut sauce is the best and love the Red Curry. Service is good, we go here so much the lady knows my partners name and order :)

Amazing food and lovely staff. This place is cute for dining in and great for takeaway. Excellent value at $13.90 for a main and rice - perfect meal for two. Entrees are delicious. Highly recommended.

I have had good meals at this place but I felt that the taste has changed. Today I had noodle and curry but both are too salty. Curry tastes like cream plus too much water? I'm sorry that their taste is not good as it used to anymore.

Delicious Pad Thai and great speedy service! This is definitely my preferred Thai in the area. The staff are always nice and I hardly ever have to wait for my food

This is our ‘go to’ when we are feeling like Thai takeaways. <br/><br/>The dishes are;<br/>- full of vegetables that are always fresh and never over cooked<br/>- tasty<br/>- typically ready 15 minutes after ordering <br/>- awesome value for money.<br/><br/>Over a year ago we found on a couple of occasions that the dishes were lacking a bit of pep (they were mild as a default) and subsequently we always order ‘medium’ and the food now consistently delivers on pep.

I love Thai, so I was excited for dinner and especially since this place is very close. I kinda wish I didn’t. Told me to pick up in 15 minutes, I showed up on time and waited another 20 minutes! The lady was nice so I give them a star for her. Then the food omg... was so below average. Extremely flavourless and so not worth it. I was disappointed with everything I ordered. The green curry had no flavour.... the pad thai was so bland. The Tom yum soup wasn’t even spicey - what’s the point?! I would never order here again and would pay extra and go extra distance to another Thai place

Thai Yum..indeed yum!<br/><br/>This little restaurant serves delicious dishes. As a tom yum fan, I highly recommend this place.<br/><br/>Just FYI, the portions are a little smaller than most Thai places around. But in terms of flavour, cleanliness and speed..Thai Yum is sure a place to go to.

Awesome place to get Thai takeaway. Food is always fresh with lots of yummy veges. I always order the red curry. Food usually ready in 15 mins after calling.

Just had takeaway meals from here ...just now ,,,spicy beef ...and a chicken cashew meal ( no cashews!!!),,,it was spot the beef ..and chewy beef at that !!.....all colyflower and not much else ...really ??,I could have made this st home for half the price and had decent cuts of beef ...( not over cooked rubber !!,really how much does it take to put all the ingredients in properly and not over cook them and give a decent portion ...not half filled containers of the dish selected ,,,won't be coming back here !!,very disappointed ,,,,,,,check your takeaways before exiting the place here ....

Pretty fast service, your food will generally be ready in the time they tell you if you're getting takeaway. Good value for what you're getting and fresh ingredients.

Ate here a few years ago with my grandma, sister and mum. I had the tom yum soup - it was flavoursome and filling. Every dish there was of a generous portion for a cheap price - totally worth. The curry puffs and fish cakes at Thai Hut are 5/5.<br/><br/>Went back recently and had the pad Thai with tofu. It was flavoursome and heavy. It was ok but I prefer a fresher taste such as the one from Sunflower Thai.

Went to this thai place based on it being close to home. To my surprise for its price is definitely value for money. Not to mention very tasty. Awesome<br/> place, generous portions and quick service waited just under 10 minutes for my order.

I used to love this place and probably went there every week , sometimes twice a week. Then I read a article on some blog  saying that some restaurants dont use vegetable  stock for their vegetarian meals (Im vegetarian) so I thought I would ask Thai Yum  just to make sure that they use vegetable stock in their  vege/.tofu meals, to my horror the lady told me" no no we use chicken stock for all our meals" she said people dont mind cause when they order tofu or vegetable dishes its only because they want a break from meat but chicken stock is ok" Well NO its not! I cancelled my order and have never been back. I actually felt sick thinking all this time I have been eating chicken stock Gross. They really need to change this, Im sure most people who order tofu or vege meals from Thai Yum would be vegetarians and Im sure they would be horrified knowing they are eating chicken stock

One of our Thai friends recommends us to this place. We try it and always come to this place since if we crave some thai foods.<br/>We like almost everything that they have on their menu but our favourite is their pad mee goreng.<br/>We rate this place 5 out of 5 for their beautiful foods, reasonble price and generous servings.<br/>

Thai YUM Food Hut;excuse me for dining next door for the past few months paying huge prices for meals that,wouldnt satisfie my hunger. Beautiful Thai food. I have come in twice in the last 5 days. Friendly service on both occasions(Same lovely lady) & two well enjoyed curries;Green Thai Curry & Panang curry. Personally I'd love a bigger portion of white rice as the yummy curry portions are a good size..others may disagree. I also feel the 'medium' spice level could be a little more spicier, then again maybe I should ask for Thai medium as I can only imagine some of the complaints you may get that ' ' is too spicy. I will be back to try more dishes off your menu! Glad I have found my regular Thai Restaurant&take-away!

This Thai take away they have only a row of bar seats and 2 two sweaters table.<br/>Most people call and take away from the shop.<br/>We prefer dine in.<br/><br/>They have wonderful Thai food. Tom yum and pineapple fried rice are our favourite.<br/>Tom yum can be very hot if you request them for hot tom yum. We also had requested them to prepare tom yum koay teow (flat rice noodle cooked in tom yum soup), very nice.<br/><br/>A good try if you are in Birkenhead.

Absolutely amazing! My girlfriend and I come here weekly as a day off treat, and have tried both eat in and take out. The food is almost always perfect, yet on saturday nights when the are swamped the standard can drop a little. Still my favourite place to eat, with comforting food and lovely staff.

Very nice food, only been once so far, would recommend the mixed entrée as a little snack or to share as a start to your meal, good value and tasty.

Delicious and affordable! Love love love their authentic food. Portions are so big, will definitely leave you with a full tummy. I especially like the way they cook their vegetables it's just so yummy! Just wish they had a bigger dining place, although I do understand that it's a takeaway place. I just feel like the price are gradually increasing (though majority of food places do) and they used to include (free) rice with the meals.

My go to for local thai takeaway! Always friendly & fast service. The cashew chicken is my usual order & it's always full of flavour! A little on the spicy side for a medium heat request but I like it

Ordered dinner through a work colleague who picked it up on the way to work. Got the five star chicken. Disappointing how they forgot to include the sauce so now I'm sitting here with dry chicken/vegetables and rice thinking how I'm gonna eat it. The spring rolls went down a treat, they included the sauce for that. Just a message for everyone to check they include the sauce with your meals so you don't end up in the same predicament as I have.

Great place for a quick dinner. The staff is friendly and the food is great. We've only ever had takeaway from here and it has always been good. It's a lot cheaper than the other thai places nearby. Our favourites are the chicken green curry and tom yum soup.

Great Thai takeaways in Birkenhead. There are a few small tables to dine in but we usually order to take home. The meals are always delicious one of our favourites!

Been craving Thai all week and found this little gem here on Zomato. Not only is the food delicious it's cheap and the portions are huge. Highly recommended

Very disappointed. Tried the place because of the good reviews but the guy could barely understand me on the phone, our order came without rice which is usually complimentary and we weren't informed, ordered a medium and it's way hotter than I expected and tastes awful. In fact I've had three mouthfuls and am throwing it out. Ordered the mixed entree as well which is $9 and was very small. I won't be going back.

Tried this place once. I am not a big Thai eater and I decided to make a trip here given the excellent reviews. The service was lovely and food was delicious. Not to mention the prices were fantastic.Very honest and filling meal which was made very quickly (cant have been longer than 7 minutes for 3 dishes)!

Hi, my partner and I have been ordering once a week for about a year, I would say that the food is great about 90% of the time. Whenever we have had bad food Thai Yum has been good to deal with. But tonight we have found a large blow fly in one of our meals and this is in winter. I'm sorry to say but after this disgusting find we will never eat from Thai Yum again.<br/>There has to be better standards and there is below average.

Very tasty food, bought pad thai(?), didn't wait longer than 5 min, and it came with big portion, my mom and me shared one takeout and we both were very full after the meal! but as other ppl said, too less table. But will definitely come back for more takeouts:)

They claim that they don't use MSG... I don't know if I believe that because the food is way too yummy.<br/>We go there all the time and have NEVER been disappointed, it's weird because the food is really amazing and the price is really low... I always leave feeling like I should have been charged more.

I read the reviews and thought I would check out Thai Yum on the way to home last Friday . It was busy but the service was good and I decided to takeaway , what can I say the reviews were correct great tasting Thai good at a great price :-)

Thai Yum is outstanding! My wife and I will often get home from work and decide we want Thai food - and Thai Yum absolutely delivers.<br/><br/>So far the only 'complaint' is that we can't eat more! HIGHLY reccomend the Chicken Satay and the Pra Ram, but order anything and you will not be disappointed!

Called in to Thai Yum on Friday night after phoning in my order picked up my food on time great service and when I got home the taste was even better so yummy. Phad Thai and Choo Chee prawn such good flavour. My first time there and will be back :-)

Grabbed some takeaways from here the other night, Huge portions, super tasty food, I agree, would be good to have more seats to dine in, but it's perfect for a local takeout. Will be back!

loveeeee the food and service! portions were reasonable and the food tasted fresh and nice. However, I really do hope that they open a bigger place that can actually seat more people, was planning to bring my family there but don't think the restaurant can fit more than 4 people at a table. But! definitely going back there for thai food :)

I just got back from Thailand and this place didn't disappoint for authentic taste! We went here expecting cheap take away (and with that never the highest expectations for flavour) but were pleasantly surprised. Highly recommend the pancakes and chicken laab. Will be back asap!

We always get it but we have had thhis happened two times and they missed out adding our yellow curry but the food is really nice. they service is really good and they kiddly made the curry and we came and got it :)

I had to visit this place being a Thai food lover and reading a great review about the place in Viva supplement in the herald. We arrived early when it opened at 4.30pm for dinner(they also open for lunch) and we were lucky we did. The lovely owner told us as soon as the article was published, that night they had to turn people away as they were so busy. No sooner had we been seated that it started to pump and now I know why!<br/><br/>The food in a word was delicious! We started with the fishcakes and the curry puffs. You can't go past the curry puffs. I can honestly say they are the best I've ever tried. Melt in your mouth,beautiful texture and flavour,I could've eaten many more.<br/><br/>Our mains were next and we ordered the Choo Chee Goong (stir-fried prawns with red curry paste, kaffir lime leaves, peas and coconut cream) and the larb,a thai salad with minced chicken,fish sauce,lime and herbs. They were just as good as the appetizers The Choo Chee Goong was superb, didn't feel heavy and the prawns were perfectly cooked. The larb was an experience for the taste buds..a perfect mixture of savoury and sour.<br/><br/>We drove out of the area to get there and it did not disappoint. Next time I'll try some different options. There is seating but it is pretty limited, a couple of tables and a bench with seating but it is more of a takeaway venue. The only question remains...when do they open a restaurant..please!!!!

An above average Thai food experience. The spring rolls entrees were delicious as were our mains (Honey Prawns 12/10). The staff are very pleasant and willing to do anything to make you happy. My only gripe is the lack of seating, but I would eat those honey prawns standing on my head. We highly recommend this place, and the honey prawns....and my wife loves the chicken cashew nut dish too... you gotta go.. thanks guys see ya Sunday

Yum! great food big portions and great service lady at counter always got a smile. when i went i had the pad thai it was so nice and i even got some free tea when i was waiting very relaxing atmosphere nice music and magazine's to read i highly recommended this place 5 stars :)

Mmmm, I can't wait to go back here. The food was fresh and tasty and the serving sizes very generous. The meals are very reasonably priced and there was copious hot green tea. The service was attentive and friendly and we hardly had to wait for our meals. It's just what you want for an delicious, affordable meal out - and they do takeaway too!

The best Curry Puffs in Auckland. Last night we had a great meal here.We enjoyed Red Curry Prawns, Satay Chicken, Beef with garlic, Yellow Chicken Curry, Honey Chicken and Five Star Chicken. All meals were of an excellent standard and generous portions. Prices were very reasonable. We will certainly be back and will be telling all our friends.

I love Thai yum ! Its so good! Karen is lovely and always remembers you. She is always worried about you and if your food is good she has excellent atmosphere. Great food a lovely attitude and and amazing restaurant. Great place to go would recommend to any one! It's my FAVOURITE place to eat in the world

AMAZING thai!!<br/>really fresh ingredients and lots of them -theres always some left over for lunch the next day. <br/>the owners are extremely friendly -she was telling us that she only wants to provide great food, -even though it costs them bit more, so that the customers are happy (and will come back)<br/>we drive a long way to come to get thai from here, passing heaps of other thai places on the way!!<br/>p.s. try the curry puffs -they're hand made and are freakin great!!

Fantastic food and wonderful welcoming staff, every time I've gone I cant help but feel lucky to have found such a gem of a place! and know they wont stay small for long.

The cute, wee woman who takes orders is oh so helpful &amp; friendly and her chef husband makes amazing, fresh food. Portions are huge and I usually take half of my Pad Thai for lunch the next day.
