Review Yaruki Japanese Restaurant - Browns Bay

Kin Cheung
Beautiful Japanese restaurant located in Browns Bay. The interior gives you a comfortable Japan style vibe, excellent services too! A bit crowded and noisy as tables are located quite close to each other. The sashimi dishes are fresh, cooked food is what you would expect from a standard Japanese restaurant.

We had a fantastic dinner tonight! So glad we decided to dine here. The food was amazing. Fresh and plentiful. Menu was extensive and staff were friendly and courteous. They made a special effort to wish my son happy birthday and gave him a free ice cream with bananas. Great atmosphere too. Cannot fault the wonderful experience. This is our new go to place for sure!

Our third visit here and it is amazing. The flavours, the food, the staff, one cannot fault! Very tentative and super friendly, such a relaxed atmosphere. Thank you for the lovely experience

This was our first visit and we were blown away by the amazing food! Loved Udon here. The staffs including chefs were extremely friendly and we felt very welcomed. I cannot wait to go back and try Udon again! Highly recommend :)

Beautiful atmosphere and fresh sashimi. Tempura was not the best choice though. Loved the service. Will recommend. Ordered- medium sashmi/salmon nuta Chicken Teriyaki was very disappointing- it is not what I have expected. Plain chicken roast taste. Very light and little teriyaki sauce.

Yaruki restaurant have been my go-to place recently. Eventhough the place is always so busy, the foods are come out super fast but still delicious and well-presented. Definitely highly recommend 👍

Yaruki has been my favourite Japanese restaurant for over a decade. Was taken here by my parents as a kid and love to come back to experience the nostalgia and wonderful team, including Yoshi. Meals are affordable and service is SUPER fast. Highly recommended, but can be busy. Best to call ahead to avoid disappointment.

This was the greatest dining experience of my life. I have never been anywhere that reserved 5 stars as much as here. The staff went so above and beyond for our table's birthday and I will be back for every person I know's birthday forever. I wish I could rate higher than just 5/5.
Liz Scott
Love this place. Never disappointed. Beautiful presentation of all the dishes, fresh and delicious. Great attentive and friendly service.

Fresh sashimi, every meal is so tasty and well presented. Ambience and service is great. A definite bookmarked restaurant to revisit again.

Me and my family have been fans of Yaruki since 2005. It's only gotten better and better each year. The head chef Yoshi is super friendly and makes the best Japanese food in Auckland fo sho. Master of his craft.

The food was very aesthetically pleasing and well displayed. Perfect for the gram!

The house was full on a Friday night and I can see that a lot of people enjoy this restaurant but personally I just found the foods not that “Japanese”. Maybe cuz they’re a fusion restaurant? The two main meals we ordered tasted like something that I can taste at a chinese restaurant. Banana in the tempura icecream wasn’t well ripened so it was quite starchy and hard.

Extremely good service and all the staff were so so so kind.

We book at table for 7.30 pm last night
but had to wait 40 minutes in the crowded foyer for it to become available and even then there was no cutlery. We then waited another 25 minutes for our food to arrive and when it did was cold.

We will not be back.

#1 Japanese restaurant in Auckland! If you’re wanting authentic Japanese dishes that is not only fresh but good in quantity, this is the only place to go to! Amazing interior, and loveliest staffs and the best sushi chef 💓 Taste and presentation are always consistent! Their bento sets, yakiniku and sukiyaki are just amazing

Great food and interesting menu. The deserts were great and the soup amazing. Service was not the usual standard, had to call for service constantly.

This is my favourite Japanese restaurant in Auckland, all their dishes are very authentic and tastes fresh. The Bento boxes have good portions.

First time came here and it became one of my favourite restaurant in Browns Bay!
I came here with my partner on a Wednesday night about 7:40pm. Its quite busy at that time. So highly recommand to book a table before you go.
Friendly staff with great customer service!
The food was really good and highly recommand the sushi combo! Or any sushi~ its just not any sushi you grabed for a quick lunch.
Everything we ordered surprised us and will definately go again.
The atmosphere is nice and they got a photo wall with all the pics that people celebrating birthday there❀

One of my favourite places in Browns Bay.
I love coming here the food is always lovely and the staff are friendly and organized.
I've tried a variety of things and am yet to be disappointed. It's always filling and yum.
It's pretty busy in the evenings so its ideal to book ahead of time.

I used Zomato gold in Yaruki, the manager (maybe) took care of us. The food was delicious, a little bit pricey if I was not using zomato gold. Good service, really Japanese atmosphere. Overall, highly recommended.

Seafood hotpot soup was seasoned really really well too.
I was quite sad they didnt let me order from the special menu with Zomato Gold but the food didn’t disappoint me at all.
One of our local favourites to go to often for lunch or dinner 😋 never disappointed in the service or quality of the food. Staff always give us a warm welcoming 😊

Yaruki's has been my number one favourite restaurant on the North Shore since I was introduced to it years ago by a school friend. I go as often as I can and LOVE the food. The works of art that emerge from that kitchen are a feast for eyes and taste buds alike. Friendly, helpful staff, wonderful feel to the place, enjoyable location... and FANTASTIC food! I definitely recommend booking a table in advance as you will not want to miss out. I hope they never change. I take everyone to this restaurant and plan to have my 50th birthday there too!

A visit to Japan from the streets of Browns Bay. The authentic Japanese restaurant has neatly decorated interior and serves a range of intricately made Japanese cuisine - ranging from sushi, sashimi, and tempera. There is a good variety of foods to order at reasonable prices. The waitress was helpful in explaining the different options on the menu, and the service was reasonably fast. Enjoyed my stop here!

Food: 7/10
Ambience: 8/10
Service: 7/10
Yummy food and superb service team, but the combos are a little too expensive. The look of the shop is also really good . I recommend you to go there

😋 Really nice Japanese restaurant. Recommended by a my Japanese friend, she said this restaurant has an authentic Japanese cuisine! Cosy decor, feels like you are in Japan now. Service was very friendly, lovely Japanese girl. I had a lunch bento, it was so nice and so much food to eat them all. Strongly recommended for friends. I will come back definitely.

Gorgeous wee spot for dinner - do call ahead to book as they get very busy. Favourite is the salmon sashimi - always very fresh and best I’ve had on the shore. The bento is always good value for the amount of food you get.

We came tonight without reservation and the resraurant was fully booked! But lucky they let us sit at one of the reserved table! The ambience gave warm feeling with creative japanese decorations! We ordered dinner bento set, california rolls! Sashimi were really fresh. Dinner bento portion was quite big, suitable for sharing between 2 people! Overall nice dinning experience! Fast and professional services from fun of house and kitchen! 👍👍

We go there regularly and it's always good.

When they are busy they prefer that people finish within a reasonable time because it's such a popular place with limited seats. This is also to be considerate to the people waiting for a table. It's very unfair that some people give this place a very low rating only because of the time limit to eat. This doesn't do justice to the high quality of the meals. These people can visit other restaurants if they want to sit there for ages.
Laura Oliveira
Go to Japanese place when we want to go somewhere local! Food is always tasty and reasonably priced. Service is always friendly as well. Only thing which could use a bit of improvement is the teriyaki chicken sometimes could use a little more sauce.
Abby Liu
After doble confirmed with my Japanese friend me and my Mr went to the place. Accidentally booked at another Yaruki in west auckland... but they also kindly gave us a seat for dinner :) very appreciate, food and deco was stunning and at suitable portion, absolute in love with the tempura btw

We have been going to Yaruki for several years now. This restaurant always serves a high standard of food which is nicely presented. The food is fresh and tasty. Service is great. This restaurant has become very popular in Browns Bay so would recommend booking a table.
Anna Leech
Delicious food and excellent service. Highly recommend. Will certainly be back. Great to have a restaurant like this locally. Make sure you book as always busy!
Jess
This restaurant deserves a genuine 5/5 for food, service, atmosphere, and overall experience.

Myself and 2 others went along on a saturday night (we made a booking because it's always so popular). A lovely waitress seated us and gave us our menus, and about 8 minutes later was back to take our orders. When told that one diner's orders must not contain any dairy, not only did she check, but the chef came by to double-check that certain ingredients were ok. That is quality service.

The drinks we ordered arrived promptly, and the food we ordered arrived after a short wait. At no time did we feel we were kicking our heels.

Everything was artfully arranged and delicious. And there was so much! I highly recommend the hot pot, and the sake.

Definitely worth a visit here.

When your best friend loves Japanese food... I have to constantly find Japanese restaurants to go to. She absolutely loved the food here, and we've found ourselves coming back quite often for casual dinners! It may look plain and simply on the outside, but once you step in, you'll be surprised and overwhelmed by its authentic atmosphere. The staff are dressed in traditional Japanese yukatas and the whole lay out of the restaurant feels warm and cozy. The entrees are delicious and the mains are served with decent sized potions. My favourite is the Chicken Combo. For those who are indecisive and don't know whether to get Teriyaki or Katsu chicken, why not get a taste of both? They are usually quite busy on Friday and Saturday nights, so calling in and booking beforehand is recommended!

Went there for dinner. There was a group of 6 of us. As soon as we sat down they were trying to take orders when we didn't have drinks or had a chance to look at menu. Main was good dessert I had banana and it was pale coloured and oily (under cooked) is my opinion and rushed given what happened before and after. Before we had ordered dessert they were asking how long we were going to be as they wanted our table at 8 for another booking. We had only arrived at 6.30. Really rude. We were spending good money ordering three courses and purchasing alcohol and were there to have a enjoyable evening out but were rushed and felt pushed out before we had finished. Very rude given the amount we all spent there. When we were there for dinner and a night out and ordering sign I can't $$ dishes. Eg prawns etc that were some of the most expensive on the menu the service was far from great
Xushi
Beware - you only get 1.5 hr window to eat there with a side order of bad service!

I made a booking for 6pm to catch up with a friend. After I sat down and ordered a drink and entree, apologising for my friend is running 10 mins late, I was told by the waitress: “...just to let you know we need your table back by 7.30, because "an hour and half is enough time to finish dinner". Barely time to eat dinner! We are in a restaurant not fast food chain! And when you are spending $$ for your dinner, you most certainly expect to ENJOY your meal and the surroundings, instead of just shovelling it in and rushing out.

I told her I wish I was informed about their policy on the time of booking! She said she will see if they can move us over to another table. They couldn't and at 7.30 sharp we were told by the chef we need to vacate the table immediately with a Thank you thank you, now here's the door" upon payment. Shocked and disappointed, we paid and will never return. Way to treat loyal customers!

We never even got our dessert because we were rushed out. If that's how you treat customers then we'll spend our money elsewhere.

We have been going to this restaurant for few years now and always found it charming and great service without this issue before. All has changed, their attitude is appalling. Never again.

The best Japanese hands down! We have tried various Japanese resterants. This is by far the best Japanese i have had. They never disappoint time and time again.
Donna Nelson
We love this place. The food is always delicious and the presentation fantastic. It is usually busy so always good to make a booking. Service is consistently good, friendly chef and staff, and a nice relaxed environment. Vegetarian options available. If you like Japanese food, this is the place to go!
Warren
An unassuming entrance and nothing from the outside that really calls you in, that all changes when you get inside. Lovely cozy feeling, very compact yet comforting.
Service is excellent, friendly and welcoming. The food is outstanding, great selection, great flavour and worth every bite.
Go give it a go, you won't be disappointed!
Jessica
Went here for dinner last night and it was nice. I had the salmon steak as my main & my boyfriend had chicken katsu. We also shared the Yaruki O'Makase Course A set and to be honest it was so filling we didn't really need the mains also! So if I was to go again, I would just get the course A to share cause it was really nice & lots of food to share between 2 people unless your super hungry you could order more food. Service was fine and the décor was lovely.
Caitlin
Unreal food. Best Japanese I've ever had. Cute little restaurant which was inviting, clean and warm. Food was so fresh and sooo hot when it was served. Only reason why it's not a 5 is because the service was pretty bad & we waited ages for our order to be taken and the waitress didn't bring me any water and after I asked for it she brought over a tiny, half full glass. We had to wait for a while to pay too. Would recommend highly apart from that!
Cecilia Wu
This restaurant is always busy, maybe because it's a small setting, the slowest food service we ever experienced, 5-7 mins wait between dishes. Food was fine, not authentic Japanese food we would expect, a bit of western twist added.
Mike Wazowsky
First of all, the services of the waitresses were awful. There were no greetings, after we sat down for 20 mins, we asked for hot tea as it doesn't seem like there were anyone going to offer anything. The chef came out explaining some dishes were going to be late, which was fine, he was nice and polite. But the waitresses just couldn't care less.

And it's NOT real Japanese. The dishes doesn't really taste like Japanese, apart from sashimi, which is really hard to go wrong. I ordered Salmon steak, it tastes like Korean stir fry. My friend ordered beef steak, it's literally Korean BBQ beef on hot plate. The salad dressing was also WRONG, if you want to know what I mean, try Takara just 200 meters away, their salad is way better, and they specialise in noodles... The green tea was so plain, it was almost tasteless. Just replacing fresh tea bags is not that hard, come on. The plum wine I ordered was not nice and smooth too.

Don't get me wrong, we enjoy Korean food too, but not Korean food with Japanese wrappings.
Megan Yang
We had dinner here tonight, that is really “impressive" experience! The service is terrible as if you think it's a really a Japanese restaurant. But it's actually a Korean restaurant! Because we are the only Asian customers, they thought we are Korean as well. They confirmed the menu in Korean, and the food is really Korean style. Won't consider to go this place again!

BEST BYO Japanese Restaurant on the North Shore........Great service, Great menu with fresh delicious food, great location, plenty of parking, lovely friendly atmosphere.
Good idea to make a booking as this restaurant is very popular and is always busy.
Victoria
Small, intimate and warm!

Charming little location with welcoming staff and delicious food. Would recommend everyone to go here but do book in advance because tables fill up fast!

Nice Japanese restaurant in Browns Bay. Came on weekend night without booking, fortunately came around 5:30 otherwise I don't think we can have a seat. So make ur reservation first. Sashimi is fresh and tempera is yummy, the best is soft shell crab.
Raspberry Beret
Very good but there's some exquisite competition down the road in the form of Ramen Takara. The food here is good, as with the service and pricing, but just lacks the 'wow' factor

I had never been to a japenese restaurant previous to my visit to Yaruki and I was so impressed! I decided to try new and 'interesting' dishes and enjoyed all of them. For my entree I had the tofu steak which was delicious. It came out on a hot plate (which I stupidly burnt myself in the quest to discover if it was hot) and the tofu covered in a sticky, tasty sauce. My main was the eel dish which I was intrigued by and again, it was very tasty as well as being something I had never tried before. Finally for my desert I had the tempura banana (yet another first time dish) which I really liked although I had to go to the counter myself to order as I believe the waiters had assumed that my group was finished ordering food, and no one asked if we'd like desert once we'd finished. Apart from that little thing, it was a good experience and I would recommend!

Nice local // Very friendly staff // beautiful food // beautiful decor

I absolutely love Yaruki and is definitely one of my favourite Japanese restaurants locally. I've been here several times and each and every time the food and service was faultless. This time round I came for dinner for my birthday, we booked a table because this place does get very busy so booking is recommended. I ordered the tempura udon and my partner ordered the chicken combo. My tempura udon came on a stove which I found very exciting and unique! The waiter that night was very helpful and friendly as well, I have never been to Yaruki and had bad service, it's always good and always well looked after.

Definitely recommend Yaruki, however booking is strongly recommended.

For those who have been here before you will know just how great this place is but for those who don't know, well..... the staff here are so friendly and polite, they always remember you ( or atleast put in the effort to ) the food is fantastic with great lunch deals to keep you going through the day, the service is excellent and the atmosphere is very fun to be in especially with a group of friends or family drinking sake during the evening while talking about the fun times and joking about the loser bullies of high school and wondering where they are in life ( I dislike bullies however they are usually bullies because of their own negative upbringing so please note I am understanding of this fact, also I am not saying that parents or guardians of kids who have been bullies have given the child a bad upbringing). Birthdays are fun here and they even have a photo wall for all the memories of their customers which they truely value and their food and service reflect how much they care about people. Definitley come here and experience this place if you havn't already.

Fantastic little restaurant with loads of character and charm. We visited on a Thursday for my son's birthday with 8 of us and managed to book a table the same day. The food was fresh and delicious, all of us loved our meals and even the big eaters were satisfied. I recommend the salmon steak which was cooked beautifully with loads of vegetables. Service is very efficient, the staff are lovely and they celebrate someone's birthday with a song and free dessert - a bit of fun. Would highly recommend if you want a Japanese restaurant with great food and it's not too expensive either.
Matt
Lovely place to eat, really nice food and service.
We had the two person meal, with a lot of different eats.

The fresh raw fresh was fresh.

The only bad thing is say, is that I found the chairs very uncomfortable, and I'm only small guy, felt like it cut my legs in half.

Will go back again....
Toru Tres
Good pricing for bento at lunch time, then price goes up at dinner time. Anyhow food is good, customer service is great. A bit limited with their wine selection. This is a very jap restaurant.

Been here on many occasions and its one of my favourite Japanese Restaurants.
Reasonably priced, a night out for 2 people including drinks adds up to approx. $80. Always excellent service, takeaway is also really good if you dont want to eat in. Never had any issues with the food!
Jade Lim
Yaruki, a humble little Japanese restaurant in Browns Bay which places importance on freshness, quality and authenticity.

Always busy. So make sure you make your bookings beforehand.

We had the Japanese Dinner Bento ($27.90), and Special Dinner Bento ($31.90)...which comes with their daily special. And so happen that day when we dined, sashimi was their daily special! Yum yum!

Highly recommended, and will be back.

Best sushi !!

And the owner** yoshi he is a very welcoming guy and sweet.:)
All dishes are divine my favorite are boat sashimi and Nuta yumm

Always enjoying to go to that restaurant has a character!
FoodieOodie95
Love my Japanese!! I always go for their Bento boxes when I go and Ive had their Chicken Teri Bento & Yaruki Lunch Bento so far. The food's always promt and fresh and Ive always been full and satisfied :) Mmm their tempura and sashimi is 👌👌
Minily
Yaruki is a small and cosy restaurant that can be relied on for fresh Japanese food.

I would recommend new diners to order the daily sashimi (the medium size is beautifully presented), with the sushi roll, takoyaki and scallops also a favourite.

For main dishes, on a cool evening, I’m a fan of the ‘Hot Pot Sukiyaki’ and enjoying it all to myself :)

The special set and bento boxes are of a generous serving, and for those less adventurous, the Teriyaki or Katsu dishes are a good choice too.

This is a warm, local, favourite spot that you can count on for good food. What you can’t count on is a table. Diners are advised to book in advance.
Geoff Cronhelm
Great little Japanese place. Staff can be a little standoffish but food is beautiful. Great decor and a nice atmosphere. Sake list is OK but not that broad.

I absolutely love Japanese food - I have high expectations when it comes to Japanese but surprisingly, Yaruki was decent! I would definitely come back again (it's up there with my favourites: JANKEN and TAKARA). The portions are good, the food is fresh, the flavours come together and really tastes like authentic Japanese.

The salad I had was different to the usual ones from Japanese take out places, which I actually liked because of the punchy flavours. Sashimi was delicious and very generous. The food is definitely good value for money. The service was fast (we were starving and didn't have to wait long) and there is nothing I can really fault!
Rebecca Cook
Fantastic night. Went for a birthday they play loud birthday music which was hilarious! Great food and they really went the extra mile with the surprise celebration!
Ian
Went for dinner. Great food and service. Everyone loved all their meals and all were different. My second time there so was great to see the standards were still very good. Wouldn't hesitate to go back again.
Alana Geach
This place is always full which reflects their delicious food. Last time I went the waitress accidentally spilt miso soup on my friend but they gave her meal to her for free which kept everyone happy. The staff were friendly and were very apologetic, would definitely go back!
Trin
Came here for dinner with a group of friends. Lucky we booked a table because this place gets full super fast! The restaurant had to turn down a few people due to fully booked that night. I definitely prefer lunch over dinner though. I started going to yaruki in Henderson over 4 years ago and I absolutely loved that place that I went through a phase where I used to go every week. The quality of their meals have slightly changed over the years but they are still pretty good. Would recommend more friends to come here.

We finally went for lunch at the Yaruki in Browns Bay as we have meaning to for a number of years. We are both partial to Japanese food and we ordered the Chicken Combo lunch special ($9.99) of Chicken Katsu/Chicken Teriyaki/ salad/rice. The teriyaki was tender, succulent and delicious, and the Katsu was crisp and tasty. When we arrived the place was pretty full but even so the service was efficient and rapid. Overall an excellent lunch at a reasonable price. The popular bento lunch special ($15.90) looked amazing and definitely worth trying next visit.

Always enjoy yaruki, fantastic for date night or with the kids

We have followed Yoshi of Yaruki from small beginnings in Henderson and now go to Browns Bay. What great food, we think its the very best. Mention your birthday and you will get a wonderful surprise.
Thanks see you again very soon.
Vicki Williams
Very good. Great food. Booking is a must. Definitely going back
Ryu L
Yaruki has gradually become my favorite Japanese restaurant in browns Bay even if the head cook/owner/staff is actually Korean. Dont be ashemed. But he trained in Japan and the food. yaruki puts up has in my experience always been well prepared, well served and solidly middle of te road Japanese.
Poricasol
Always packed. My partner and I have been going there regularly as the food is really amazing. Probs most kiwis won't have it but the unagi kabayaki is the best I've ever had. Staffs have always been warm and friendly. Definitely a great choice for casual eating out.
Les Howe
Enjoyed a birthday celebratory lunch here today. Service was quick & efficient. Food was as good as we expected after reading others reviews! Reasonable prices too.
Will go there again.(Jan 2014) Back again, one year later! The food for the 3 of us was fine but we were disappointed with the slip up in the service today. One order for a Sushi & Sashimi set (#49) was mucked up & only the Sashimi was delivered. The rest of us had almost finished eating our meals (Salmon Teri Bento & Seafood Bento) when we enquired if there wasn't some more food to come? Oops, yes! The Sushi then arrived quick smart. 9/1/15

We often visit this restaurant and really like the consistantly good Japanese meals on offer. The owner chef always seems to be enjoying preparing the meals. The waitress's are efficient and prompt with their service. We also like the fact that it is BYOW and the food prices are reasonable. iT is very hard not to like this restaurant.
Bramford Horton
A group of 7 of us had never been here but figured we'd give it a shot. Every single one of us could stop raving about how sizable, tasty and good value our meals were. We arrived late and it looked like they were closing but they kept the kitchen open for us and even brought out some complimentary sushi on the house. The service was great and the meals were brought out quickly. If I could give 6 stars I would.
Jin Gao
Have been at this place for lunch on two separate occasions and ordered their teriyaki chicken lunch box and chicken special. Both times, the meals were delicious. Service was also great, meals came out fast.
Would definitely recommend this place. Good value for money too :)
Alyse M
Great food at reasonable prices. Service is slow but friendly.
Tracey Senf
This place would have to be one of my favourites yet for Japanese food. I have tried many now but still come back to Yaruki, especially for the lunch boxes. The service is great, nice and friendly, the food is delicious and the ambience is nice too. So glad this place is not too far from me...thank you!
Rob Bickford
This restaurant has fantastic Japanese Cuisine. We used to frequent this establishment when owned by the original owners. It was always popular but now even more so with Yoshi at the helm.To be sure of a table I recommend you make a reservation - now that says something!.
Graham
Great atmosphere, excellent service, good food, very good value for money.
Never disappointed after many visits.

If you like Japanese food, I recommend you try this out. The chef creates delicious, attractive food and the service is always to a high standard.
Alex
Brilliant Japanese.
I always have excellent service- staff are very friendly and inviting.

The meals are averagely priced but well worth it as dishes are really tastey and well presented.

This is my regular!
Brian Casey
Great menu, and excellent value combination meals. For those with children who haven't eaten Japanese, the menu offers meals for the most fastidious children!
Lots of parking and you can bring your own wine (BYOW), or enjoy their authentic Japanese beers and Saki.
Jessica
Having moved from the City to the shore, it's hard to find good 'international' restaurants. This is a lovely place which is great for both lunch and dinner and I was very pleased to find it! The staff are very friendly and it is well priced with quality ingredients. I visit about once a month and really enjoy it.

Recently, we took our 5 year old there for dinner and it was a great experience for dining out with children, although, book early so that you don't disturb other patrons as the premises are still quite small.

I can highly recommend the lunch boxes which are tasty and very good value. A lovely local place!
Kristina
very nice food not too pricey did for get one of our meals but was getting a bit busy at the time .

My favourite Japanese haunt. The chef greets you by first name basis. Staff are attentive and friendly. Sashimi is fresh and prepared with care.

The menu is fantastic and the restaurant is BYO. There are a few Japanese restaurants on the stretch of road but this joint is always busy and full of regular punters.
