Review Asian Wok - Browns Bay

William Lin
I've dine here on numerous occasions for dinner and it's always highly recommended by friends who live on the shore. The table layout is spacious and there is ample parking on and off street at night. Food came out quickly after ordering. Good value for money and very tasty! The Peking Duck was very good.

We went for a Birthday dinner. There are plenty of car parks off the street. The restaurant environment is spacious. The staff is polite. Food came out quickly, large serves. The tastes are as good as always. The shop owner is very nice and gave us a very big surprise. Highly recommended.

We had a great end of season team dinner here. Food was really good, with quick service considering there were over 20 of us. Have also been here for casual lunches and look forward to it each time.

Great restaurant, food is always delicious and fresh. Chilli chicken, cumin lamb and bao buns and beans with pork mince the best I've ever tasted. Highly recommend Asian Wok Browns Bay. The owner is amazing as well as all.the staff especially Grace. We visit at least once a week.

Very good place for a Chinese Asian banquet. I had plenty of food it was well done and not heavy, for example their Peking Duck is excellent. Pleasant atmosphere, range of Chinese and Pakeha families. If you have a Chinese friend, take them here so they can unlock the best of the menu for you n

Tasty authentic Chinese food. Value for money, large serves, the mains would be better for 4 or more people. Too much of one thing for a couple, but you can always take away the left overs. Remember the chillies are ornamental, don’t be like me on my first trip to China and try to eat them all.

we frequent this place often. the people there are very nice and the food is very good. the beans. bro the beans are so good. picture this: you're feeling down on your luck, you're sad, life is not going well, but you go to asian wok, you order Beans and Pork. you eat it and suddenly you're filled with endorphins and happiness and you can feel the sunlight on your face and suddenly the world seems full of colour again. the beans bro... even though they're like $30 i am so passionate about them that i could slam back the whole box don't even test me. (i've done it before.) i also thoroughly enjoy the peking duck when we can splash out a little. mmm duck pancake. P.S. the beans bro... - the bean bro fanclub

Third time here. The more you come the more you like this restaurant. The menu covers a wide range of food from north to south, east and west part of China. Skeptical about the kitchen could handle these wide range of selections. But apparently, the cooks back there are pretty versatile. Regarding the taste, I would rate it 4 star if this restaurant is in Beijing or Shanghai. But in brown bay offering this good taste, it deserves 5 star. The ambiance is nice though hardwares are a bit rundown, no luxury, not spotless clean. Services are pretty good. Hope I set the right expectations for you.

Wonderful and polite service and generous portions for all food ordered compared to other similar priced Chinese restaurants. No allocated parking for customers but had free off-road parking near by. Offers yumcha at lunch and dishes at dinner. Family friendly restaurant and had bright and large atmosphere. Highly recommended.

Good solid Chinese dinner. The food was good but I am a push over for good dumplings which we had to start and I wish I had more of. Quick easy service and a special mention to the man at the main desk for adding that bit more to our evening with his hospitality :)

Food:(4.5/5)
All dishes were super tasty except the beef tripe and the chicken feet were not tender enough.
Service:(10/5)
Service was really good compared to other yum cha places and staff were super friendly.

Has your usual yum char dishes with excellent sao mai and pork buns. The prices are really high though - one tiny portion of duck is $16, and most dishes have a very low meat to carb ratio to save costs. Customer service was also really poor, and many loud young children made it hard to enjoy lunch with the family.

A 40 minute venture to the otherside of Auckland, well worth it.

Love finding new places to yumcha, and this place did not disappoint. So reasonably priced, 9 dishes for $65~ and 2 extremely full bellies.

Loved that the dimsums came out in smaller lots, many came out on trays piping hot. They're also very happy to prepare foods when requested and topped up tea often.

Would recommend!

I went to a lot of yum char places in the past. The standard of the dishes here are really high. Service is also pretty decent. Owner is nice and welcoming.

They do a lot of durian desserts here, so if you are a big fan of durian give this place a try.

Taste - 4
Service - 3.5
Ambiance - 3.5

Asian Wok used to be my family's go-to dine in but we've not come in for a long time (partly due to long wait times) so I got takeaway from here for the first time yesterday. The pad thai was just as delicious as I remembered and the portions are still massive (could easily feed 2 and only $14). The calamari was soggy and not so great but this was the first time having a "bad batch" and the pad thai definitely made up for it.
Grace
Went here for yumcha and was pleasantly surprised. Great authentic dim sums served quickly. We were seated and food was served almost immediately. Service was nice and nice seating. Prices are above average.

Absolutely love the food here, it's my go to for yamcha. Very hygienic and spacious. Also the service is great. Browns Bay beach is nearby so it's nice for a good walk after a big feed.

Ordered dinner last night, Peking duck and sweet sour pork 锅包肉. Pancakes for Peking duck are too thick and prawn crackers are smashed :/ duck is dry as well. Sweet sour pork was joking only sauce is tasty but pork was soggy and covered by really thick corn starched not even deep fried enough... totally failure. Probably only yum cha is still good this place, won’t come back for dinner:/

Some food is good. Highly recommend the pan-fried turnip cake & egg tarts.

Unlike other yum cha restaurants, which used a lot of rice flour to make the cake tougher, I could easily taste the turnip and the flavor of Cantonese sausages from the turnip cakes.

The pastry of the egg tart is really fluffy, especially when they were just taken out from the ovens.
Ellie
The dim sum here is consistent and pleasant. It’s about a 1-2 minute’s walk from the beach, perfect for any post-food strolls haha! Asian Wok is my go-to yum cha place on the North Shore.
Jinjing Fang
One of the best yum cha place in Auckland! I truly love their custard bun and beef strips, which are dencently cooked and presented. The chicken feet is around average but can fix my craving for this dish. I would not recommend wrapped chicken with sticky rice because it's flavour is kinda plain. I will try peking duck next time go see if this one will stand out as others said.
Susanne Monica
Reasonably quick service, food taste is acceptable. The dishes all look good but the ingredients are not freshness. I would recommend going to any other random eatery.
Kitty So
I tasted dim sum but it's below standard. I've been there on peak hours and they force us to leave and impolite and they took away the table cloth without notice. I spent there not for 40 minutes only. Not recommended.
J Eats
Probably the best service for yumcha you can get in Auckland. The egg tarts are so good although the pastry isn't as flakey as you'd normally expect. Xiao mai and xia jiao are 👌👌👌. Tender and juicy enough for 1 biters. The bbq pork rice rolls and turnip cake were our least favourite as they tasted quite bland.
Coffee Macarons
Wonderful and polite service and generous portions for all food ordered compared to other similar priced Chinese restaurants. No allocated parking for customers but had free off-road parking near by. Offers yumcha at lunch and dishes at dinner. Family friendly restaurant and had bright and large atmosphere. Highly recommended.

My favourite restaurant in the shore for yumchar, available for both lunch and dinner. Other restaurants usually only have yumchar service for lunch. They are really busy over the weekends so it would be a good idea to book a table if you dont want to wait. Durian puff is my absolute goes to everytime, very soft and puffy.
Food 5/5
Ambience 4/5
Service 4/5

This rating is for their yumcha lunch on 03-Jan-2019. We lost count on the number of dishes we tried here. Two dishes stood out for us - the original prawn rice rolls and crispy prawns pancakes - we liked them so much that we re-ordered them three times!

Taro balls are light and crispy but the fillings were lacking in flavor and quantity.

Steamed pork buns fillings were lacking in flavor, however, the skin were super nice - fluffy, chewy and sweet.

Durian pastry was ok; as we prefer durian pastry/tarts from Star Seafood at Botany Downs (The Hub).

One good Sunday, we shall return again to try their Portuguese egg tarts!
Emma
Decent dim sum, most of the dishes we ordered were hot, fresh and delicious. Service was nothing to complain about. Perfectly decent place for a Sunday yumcha.

Came here with my family to try their yum cha today. The customer service was good and friendly. The staff were attentive, promptly refilling the tea and clearing the empty plates. They have many special snacks where you wouldn't find anywhere else like the durian pastry, steamed mushroom bun, special prawn red rice roll and many more! I really enjoyed the egg tarts that were freshly baked and still hot out of the oven. The special prawn red rice roll was also really unique, with the inside being really crispy and the outside being really smooth. I personally found some of the sweet snacks like the taro & almond roll a bit on the bland side (but it's probably just me as I have quite a sweet tooth XD). Unfortunately they ran out on the steamed mushroom buns when we arrived and they only have the Portuguese egg tarts on Sundays. Nonetheless, the food was quite good! :))))

We arrived at around 1 pm and the yum char trolley already finished.
We had to order off the menu but there was no staff could speak Eng.
Food and atmosphere were average. Cannot find any special reasons to come all the way to Brownsbay for this yumchar.

Tried the “yamcha” here on a busy weekend. The food here was Okay but the services were really great despite how hectic it was. The staff members were really friendly and often recommended different dishes that we’ve never tried before. We ordered so “much” until we can hardly finish it. Overall, my friends and I were satisfied 😊

Been coming here for a number of years for both yumcha lunch and dinner. We always feel well looked after and welcomed each time, although it can be a bit chaotic at times when it’s fully packed.

We had yumcha on this particular day and there was a good variety of dishes to choose from, which left us full and satisfied.
Chillxx
Love their food! Really do enjoy a bit of yumcha and lovely fried rice there! My favourite are the dumplings as they are fab xxx Great place to enjoy a bit of a Chinese atmosphere for a change

Asian wok is a family friendly Chinese restaurant where we visited for yumcha on this particular occasion. We arrived quite late (past lunch rush hour) but the staff were very happy to seat us and gave us a menu to order from.

Food was fresh and yummy.

Would recommend!

Haven't been here in 6 years (due to allergies not allowing me to eat the food). Awesome to see they now cater to my gluten allergy and the staff are super friendly!
Angela
Their spicy fish pot (shui zhu yu) is the best I’ve had in Auckland! The fish is cooked beautifully to the point it literally melts in your mouth. I’ve been here a few times with different people and this dish is a consistent favourite. The atmosphere and surroundings is pretty good for a typical authentic Asian resturaunt and service is good.

Perfect service. Friendly people and delicious food what more can you ask for. Was soo fulling. Had to take some of the food home it was soo fulling. Will deffinately be coming back again soon.

I LOVE Asian Wok, they probably have the best yumcha in Auckland. Not only are they consistent in the quality of yumcha items that they deliver, but they also have a massive range of dimsum and are consistently being innovative. For example, the red changfen is a specialty where they wrap tempura prawn inside. They also have a variety of buns including the mushroom and walnut ones where you can't find else where. The durian pastry is also an all time favourite as well as the Portuguese style egg tarts!

My friend asked me to write a review for him. Because he had diarrhea each time after he had been to there. I was speechless when I heard him saying that.

We went at 10:30am for a Saturday yum cha session. Overall, we had a good time and appreciated their friendly service. When we left at 11:45, it was starting to get busy so would definitely recommending booking for a slot before then.

The food was generally of a good standard and reasonable pricing, but I don’t remember any stand out dishes. One new dish we encountered was the 'mushroom buns’: they look like big mushrooms but are actually buns that contain beef mince, peppercorn, and mushrooms. Very fragrant with a strong peppery aftertaste.

The food here is cheap and worth the price. The delightful platters here for yumcha include the fried squid and pork buns. I ordered one of my favorite fried rice, and there was a lot of it, the shrimp and chicken. Worth the price, however not the best quality, but with such a large platter, this is a good restaurant to try.

Must do the crispy duck. Yum cha lunches are also great. Please remember this place is always busy so had better book. Not to be missed for sure.

We came here pretty often for yumcha or shared dinner with family. Their dishes are yum, quick and no hassle. Service can be on and off sometimes depending on whether it's busy or not but overall our experience were always quite good. We went here for yumcha recently and the food was good as always. Recommend their prawn toast, siu mai, kungpao chicken, prawn balls, tofu and veggies, will definitely come back again!

Should have taken photos for you since we ordered such a variety, but the phone was running low on juice. I’ll make up for it by putting some effort into it and being detailed.

Our party of 9 (half were big eaters) ordered:
- BBQ pork (small)
- *Kung pao chicken
- Braised beef brisket with turnip
- *Salt and pepper prawn
- Salt and pepper squid
- Stir fried lamb with ginger and onion
- *Sweet and sour pork
- *Mapo tofu
- *Deep fried salt and pepper tofu
- *Young chow fried rice
- *Dry stir fried rice noodles with beef
- Plain rice (need this for mapo tofu and Kung pao)

It is definitely the big family’s favourite place for Chinese. Even my dad, who isn’t a fan of Chinese food because it’s usually either too greasy, salty, smelly (his words, not mine) really enjoys this place, and is usually the last to put his chopsticks down.

The dishes with * are ones we always order without fail. Out of those, their sweet and sour pork (just enough batter to be slightly crispy but not so much that you feel like you’re just eating fried batter), Kung pao chicken (moreish and not incredibly spicy, so even those with low tolerance can attempt it) and young chow fried rice are among the best that I’ve had in Auckland. The key really is that their food is not greasy and there’s none of that overbearing MSG after taste and effect. Good for them - not only does that make their food taste cleaner, but it also means you can easily overeat without feeling the same sluggish sickness you may feel with most Chinese restaurants.

First time with the lamb and it will probably be the last time - a little salty with no distinct flavour, and the lamb was quite chewy. The braised beef, on the other hand, was perfectly seasoned and, as expected of a braised casserole dish, very tender. Squid was also a first and last - a bit on the dry side. The BBQ pork was tender and moist. I’m a true believer of good BBQ pork having a wee bit of fat, so for that I’d go to 100 Seafood Restaurant in Rosedale. But everyone else was more into lean meat so this was perfect for them.

The portions are all very good for the price. I don’t know about takeaway since containers come with restrictions (lid and all) but they are definitely on the generous side. Corkage is also very well priced for BYO. Our entire meal came to under $260 for 9 adults bursting and some leftovers to go. If you have some big eaters like we did, it would feed 8-9. For the average eaters, I think our order could easily feed 12 people.

We’ve never directly encountered bad service, but I can see how it can be luck of the draw depending on who you get. Yum cha, being so busy and packed and squashed for room, can be a little lacking in general customer care - but nothing worse than the usual yum cha place. This time, our waitress started off a little on the curt side but she suddenly became this ray of super helpful sunshine (maybe because we ordered so much?) By the end, she was all smiles.

If you’re not a fan of lots of noise and chatter at head splitting volumes that’s so common in Chinese restaurants, we definitely recommend that you come early - we came for dinner as soon as they were open for it and it wasn’t till the end of our meal that the noise became too much - and this was on a Monday night. Also meant that our food arrived quickly, too. At the end of the meal, the waitress brought out a plate of watermelon slices on the house.

The only gripe this time is that for some reason, our reservation didn’t exist when we arrived. It was made that morning, and we called them about half an hour before arriving to see if we could bring it forward by 15 minutes, which they were fine with...except they couldn’t find our booking anywhere. Luckily (perhaps being Monday) there was a big table free - especially because it was for my dad’s birthday (told you he really liked this place). They do get very busy though, so I definitely recommend making a reservation.
One of my favourite Chinese restaurant in North shore and never disappoints me, the owner expanded shop and you don't have to wait line outside and I love their durian puff and durian pastry,, A+

we went to Asian Wok, 3x last month.

we've tried their dim sum and I've tried their rice dishes as well. We should go back for their noodles hehe.

nice to find a good Cantonese restaurant nearby.

Hi,

Customer service ???? I booked in Friday appointment for my son 17th in Sunday. As he wanted to drive as part of present and missed intersection we arrived 20 min late. We were told table was taken and we don't understand due to different cultures that have to be on time. They got my mobile and we weren't aware of penalties. What a rudeness, we were late, but no call of cancellation and all our evening was ruined.

Been here for dinner a few times, the food is amazing! Staff are friendly and the service is ok. The lighting is always a little bright but if you like Asian food then I highly recommend trying Asain Wok!

We WAIT for 40 minutes and MORE.

Asked the owner and the waiter, and results they did not go to the kitchen to ask .... but go to the other table ....

Finally, we went to other place eat ramen.....

I love this place! I always end up coming back here and struggle to try other Asian food places. The food is always amazing and very reasonably priced! It's always busy which can make it hard to have a good chat, however I think it's part of Asian Wok's character and I feel like it's always a good sign when you struggle to get a table on a week night. It means there's got to be something amazing about a place. The service is always great too, there is this older man that always tends to serve us (not sure if he is the owner/manager) but he is fantastic! Always so happy and attentive.
I do sometimes wish Asian Wok would do up their decor as it does remind me a little bit of an Asian food court, so probably not the best place to go if you're wanting a romantic date night. However, if you come with a group and are looking to share an amazing feed that is well priced, definitely the place to go!

Asian Wok is no longer friendly as they've now grown and don't care about the customers who supported them when they were 'small'. My son and daughter took me there for Mother's Day and because we haven't been there in a long time, never realised they became so posh! The waiter (who used to be so friendly before) was so rude, almost shouted "do you have a reservation". It's all good you're big now, but that waiter was all friendly when you were small. Be careful - don't let your growth go to your head - Hansen is so much better

We used to dine here quite frequently long time ago, but not anymore. I guess standard has dropped a little.. Taste is pretty average, but service is good.

I have been going to this wonderful restaurant over 5 years. I love their good and some of the staff but today I had the worst experience while I was ordering food for take away. I have been waiting over 45 minutes and I asked this tall guy with glass to check what is going on with my order and he did not even look at me and said "he'd go and check for me" which clearly didn't because I was watching him. every time I make me stop going to restaurant is because of this tall middle aged guy with a glass (there is only one). I had so many bad experience from him and I've had enough. I am never going back to this restaurant anymore

Actully I've been here several times. But first time to see the boss of this restaurant and feeling disappointed as he keep putting us to order more dishes which we didn't want to. We 5 girls and 1 kid and we ordered 4-5 dishes. The boss put us to have more dishes and said "If you are not going to order more dishes this time, I wont be able to do it for you later because in the kitchen are now busy" why the hell he said this to the customer. I wont be here again next time!!!!!

The Kung pao chicken is one of the best in Auckland..a great family restaurant, with hospitable staff and very good quantities..we seem to keep going back..they also do really great Yum Cha
Grace Huang
I come here often with my family and friends. I enjoy most of the food and there is quite a selection. I don't go for the yum cha I just go for the dinner menu. The amount of food for each plate is quite a lot. For about 12 people it was only $350 and for 4 people it was about 60. The entrees are absolutely delicious, you should totally order at least one. The food service is quite slow but it's ok because the food it still good.
Greg Holmes
Unfortunately a terrible experience from start to finish. The beer was warm and flat, our order was served wrong, contained allergens that we specifically asked about and the rice was brought out about 10 minutes after the hot dishes. There was no cold water available and it took several attempts to order drink refills. The staff lacked basic hygiene (several of them would wipe their foreheads and then handle dishes) and had rather loud arguments with each other in the middle of the restaurant. The salt and pepper squid (which I had been most looking forward to) was dry, tough and overpowered in taste by the thick batter and heavy helping of chilli flakes accompanying the dish. The staff made very little effort to apologise or rectify the mistakes that had made and judging by the general atmosphere in the restaurant, our table wasn't the only one suffering from the poor customer service. I would not recommend eating here.
Shay Richardson
We went here for the first time last night and unfortunately it didn't live up to our expectations. We ordered the sweet and sour pork, chicken and cashew dish and salt and pepper squid. Due to a mushroom allergy we asked if any of the dishes came with mushroom and were told no - to our surprise the chicken and cashew dish came with mushrooms.
We also received our dishes with about 20 minutes in between, and got 2 sweet and sour pork and no salt and pepper squid - this dish took over 40 minutes to arrive (just before which we got our tiny portions of rice). By that time we'd finished the other 2 dishes already as we were so hungry.

The sweet and sour pork was the only dish that resembled what we thought it should taste like, the other two were really awful (so we were grateful they got our order wrong and gave us two sweet and sour pork).
The salt and pepper squid was very tough and there was a lot of batter. It also came with chili all through it which we weren't expecting, so if you can't tolerate heat I wouldn't recommend it.

The service was terrible, not one person came over despite us all trying to wave them over, and when I finally got someone's attention I was told "please wait" before they left again. We couldn't order anything extra or get drinks as no one would come to our table.
The beer we did end up getting was flat, so I wouldn't recommend getting drinks there.

When the time came to leave most of the tables were visibly upset due to the poor service and lack of food with some of the staff having to shout at the others in the kitchen as well.
We all came out hungry, disappointed and dissatisfied.

It was our first time there, but we definitely won't be back.

My go to place for lunch time takeaway pad thai. Being $14 for the prawn and chicken pad thai, the price is on the steeper end for a lunch dine out.

Still the taste is great and usually gets ready within 10-15mins on calling to order so it works out well.

*****Newly added:Oct 2016*****

Had to give the dine in menu a go. I was surprised with the quality if food serviced and this being provided in Browns Bay.

I had the kung pao chicken (delicious) and also the Pad thai (more delicious served straight from the kitchen).

Environment was busy, but heaps of rooms.

Price was on the bit expensive side compared to other chinese/thai food, but considering the food quality it was worth it.

Service was friendly.

Will return to try more of their dine in menu!

Yummy food and friendly staff, can get very busy, but they also do take aways! Not too expensive and very fast service :) would recommend to friends

Good value, and best of all they do Yum Cha dinner unlike others who are lunch only. However only half the menu at night, but lots of choice. order from a photo card rather than the carts being wheeled around

Food was good, and for two of us it was $46 dollars and ate plenty.

Would go back and order off the menu next time as some of the other dishes looked real good

Love love Asian wok! Everything I've had I've loved! Dumplings, cumin spicy pork, fried rice noodles with beef amazing ! Amazing service.

Maybe there is the unique place to enjoy Yum Cha in Browns Bay. It is a traditional cuisine in southern and eastern parts of China. Acceptable price and friendly staff.

First time here and yum char is good. Service is surprisingly friendly (usually yum char place is so busy, we often get the I can't be bothered attitude). We arrived when they just open, so not many people - I would recommend booking for next time. Price is about $5-$6s for your usual siumai, dumplings, buns etc... The dishes are okay, average I would say but worth going when you are in neighbourhood. We spent about $55 for 3 people (Tea is $2 pp, I think).

A group of friends and I headed here for a night out and I was very pleasantly surprised! I was a bit put off by the decor, it has a bit of a dingy look about the place but the food was awesome. As we had a large group, we decided to all choose one main each and then share them between us, resulting in about 8 dishes between us! I found I was stuffing myself as not only there was a lot if food but it was really good as well, I would definitely recommend the Peking duck curry and the beef stir fry. As well as being large portions and tasty, the person I was with and I found that we spent only about $30 between us for the dinner, so it was easy on the pocket too. I'd definitely be back again sometime.

Came here with a big group of people last night. The food as you'd expect in a Chinese restaurant was very varied. We had the whole range of meats and veg. The have large tables with lazy susans to allow for sharing of food. The best dish was a fried pork one. It was lean pork similar to an escalope fried and had glutinous rice around it. The sauce was very similar to Vietnamese sauce. Not seen this type of dish in a Chinese restaurant before.

Love coming here, will miss it when I leave :( the Thai crispy pork is wonderfully spicy (hot) w delicious Bok choy! Highly recommended - had pad Thai as well last night - ordered too much, as usual but of course enjoyed it all

■ Incredibly fast service
■ Good , reasonable prices
■ Yummy food

■ Very Busy
■ Not the best customer service

Not the best experience as the food was sorta lacking in flavour as I found the Nasi Goreng and Chicken Pad Thai a little bland. But the service is very fast and prompt. Ill need to try more of their BBQ dishes and seafood dishes next time maybe but trying it first hand, the food was good but it wasn't too out of the ordinary.

This place is wonderful. My family are regulars here and I always take my extended family whenever they come over. We normally go for a Yumcha lunch and there is a wide selection available and you can always whatever you like if it's not there. Great place to take a big group of people and there is a great range of prices. The lunch/dinner range from $15 and then they also have set menus for a minimum of four people that start from $40 pp for something a little bit fancier. It's always a great choice!
Jaya Soma
I came to eat here with my extended family about a week ago - there were about 12 of us. If you're a canton lover (like myself) then this place is a lot similar in terms of ambience and service.

Between the lot of us we ordered many dishes including deep fried squid, prawns, pork, vege noodles and fried rice. The food was okay. Since I'm a massive canton fan I was constantly comparing the two restaurants together and unfortunately Asian Wok didn't quite do it justice.

In terms of service, the food comes out relatively fast and the waiters were attentive when you needed something. My favourite dish out of the lot had to be the vege noodles - you can't go wrong with a hearty noodle dish.

Since moving from Mt Welly to BB, we have let behind the best Yum Cha restaurant in town @ Greenlane - Injoy Inn.
We started using Asian Wok the first week in BB, with great displeasure!

The food is not authentic Yum Cha, Southern China food, it tastes like crap, & the LAST time we used ova month ago, my custard filled dumpling smelt like vomit!

When I approached the owner, be used the typical Chinese method of dealing with problems, do nothing.

We will NEVER revisit again!!!
Jonathanelms1979
Terrible. Perhaps one of the worst meals we have had in a very long time. Restaurant was cold. Waitress shouted at us across the room. We were seated, then asked to move tables twice as bigger tables were needed for others (despite waitress situating us, both times). Manager then scrapped tables across the room in preparation for later bookings. Food was ample - but was gluppy and tasteless. Fried quid was basically fried flour, fried in old oil. The best thing we had was fresh apple slices. Simply awful.

Best Asian place in town! The crispy pork is so addictive, im yet to have a dish there i dont like. The service is great too always smiling and greeting you as you enter. Would reccomend to everyone!

We are regulars here. The food is tasty and the meals cheap. The manager recognises us as regulars and is always friendly. You would not book a table for a group you are wanting to impress as the restaurant itself is not very impressive. It is eating in very basic surroundings. Great for families and friends to catch up and have a nice meal.

My family and I are weekly regulars here. The staff all know us now but they have always been very friendly and welcoming. We order a variety of dishes like and have even been here for the morning Yum Cha! Everything always comes out smelling, looking, and most importantly, tasting great. They're not the cheapest of Chinese restaurants, but it's definitely worth the price. I don't believe we've ever had anything go wrong with a dish otherwise we wouldn't go so often (my family are really tough...) Sometimes you have to wait awhile for a table, especially on a Sat night. They're almost always completely full, so you best book in advance! One problem we've had were when they gave other customers our booked table temporarily and the customers decide not to move. They don't seem to want to assert themselves so we're occassionally given a table too small for our group (usually around 10ppl +)Otherwise, it's an overall great place. Then again I feel like I'm biased xD

Very good if you are wanting a cheap takeaway or meal however you definitely wouldn't go here for the decor or atmosphere. Top picks: pad Thai, sweet and your pork or the lemon chicken.

We went the Asian Wok for dinner on 07/03/15 as we be there often, but this time we experienced terrible service, I paid $192 for the meal, 10 minutes later my wife went to counter to pay the bill again as she didn't know that I've already paid for it. they received her payment again,

I just can't understand why they charge twice payments on the same Bill, amount should be cleared once payment accepted. I think this restaurant is not honest if not the issue of the till system.

when we found the double paid the bill went to counter and ask for a refund, the manager just told us that perhaps the mistake but no apologize, I believe these sort of case occur just because they may do something manually operate for the tax purpose.

Did a deal here where 13 of us paid $30 and they brought out 12 different dishes. I really enjoyed it got to have a bit of everything. Really enjoyed the sweet and sour pork, lemon chicken, pork buns and the dumplings. There was heaps of left overs and we were all very full. Only fault was a friend didn't want to take part so she ordered her own meal which ended up being brought out as if it was park of our $30 deal and was eaten before she even realized. Over all enjoyed my experience here.

This is a nice and quite place, close to community library close to the heart of Browns Bay. Nice service in English, Cantonese and Mandarin, and a TV inside can provide Chinese TV channels to view programmes (feels good especially to me really).

I enjoyed Yum Cha here with good flavour. The price is relatively competitive and taste is pretty good.

Used to eat here alot for lunch.. awesome service and friendly team. Food is what you would expect. Yum cha food is above average and reasonably priced. So amazing for price range.. nothing fancy

Have been there once. Had to wait for nearly 40 minutes to be seated for which I was prepared as we did not have a reservation and knew there would be a queue. Finally a lady kindly guided us to a shared big round table. I was struggling a bit to decide what to order as the menu had a gazillian dish names but the friendly chef explained to me all the differeces in an easy to understand manner. Ordered a fried pork rib and black bean sauce beef noodle and had a variety of dim sum. Impressed by how quickly the dishes came out given the place was almost chaotically busy. Again impressed by all the staffs as they never seemed to have lost their composure and friendliness and were highly responsive. Food wise the fried pork rib tasted really good. Great foods in general. Great eating out experience in an upbeat atmosphere. It was worth the wait.

My favourites here are lemon chicken, sweet and sour pork, dim sum, and the char kway teow. The dim sum that I recommended are the hakau, shiew may, deep-fried shrimp meatball, chicken feet, beef tendon. Most of them are nice though. My favourite non-dim sum meals here are sesame ball with red bean filling and durian mochi.

Update: we tried the Peking Duck here and gosh they are so DELISH! Love their duck soup as well as their Pork Loin Chop with Peking Sauce! They are to die for! Perfect meal for family dinner. However, it's better to make a reservation if u plan to have dinner around 6-7 pm as the place is often quite full and the waitress are super busy.

Recommended to try!

Had lunch here last week, good variety of quality authentic dishes and good service. Prices are reasonable.

Have been there many many times for yum char and dinner. Both are super! Yum char tastes great and reasonably priced! Recommend their spicy sichuan fish if you love spicy food! Peking duck is also great!

Sigh... where do I start with this place.. went here on the weekend for yum cha. Ordered variety of dumplings and $12 yang zhou fried rice. When the fried rice came out we were like.."what is this???"
Little more than single portion of rice that is fried with frozen vegetables and 1~2 eggs. We had to ask which dish it was and asked if this was the proper yang zhou fried rice. They replied it was small size that doesn't come with prawns and BBQ pork, and asked us if we were willing to pay $3 more for proper? yang zhou fried rice...
Was such a waste of time.

As a Chinese New Zealander growing up in an English speaking country I am often put off going to Chinese restaurants in the horrid fear they would start communicating to me in their language and I would just stand there in awkward silence, but dining at Asian Wok was actually really lovely.

Firstly they spoke English to me which was very helpful. I liked that they didn't assume I spoke Chinese, or maybe they are trained to greet all people in English (which I think is good for customer service) and for the area the restaurant was in. When ordering too they all spoke English to me and even my partner (who is non-Asian) could understand perfectly.

Secondly, the food was fantastic. My family and I have been to plenty of Chinese restaurants for dinner but I definitely think Asian Wok tops them all. We ordered Peking Duck (the food I could live on for the rest of my life if I were stuck on a deserted island), BBQ pork, crispy roasted pork, wonton soup, and other dishes that were to die for. Pretty much everything we ordered was delicious and exceeded way past our standards. The staff were so helpful too, they even extended our table to accommodate our massive selection of dishes.

You know you don't mind paying the bill at the end when you're utterly satisfied. That was the feeling I got after my meal was complete - I was spent. The bill was quite large (due to the tens of things my partner and I ordered on impulse) but no regrets!!! I want to come back more often but I know every time I come I'll just eat everything. Maybe in a few months time when I'm ready to put on more kilos. Nice job Asian Wok I will forever love you!

This restaurant is a favourite for us. We have been going there for years. We enjoy the relaxed family atmosphere and quick and friendly service.
The food is to our taste and always great.
This time we had a special family occasion so we had a large order of takeaways. It was ready promptly, well packed and stayed hot for ages! The owner even carried it to our car for us.
Our guests all were positive and said what high quality catering it was. All sauces were in separate containers and the dishes were all freshly cooked.
Many thanks for a very special time.

Came here yesterdAy for the second time with my parents as thought out initial experience was relatively decent but unfortunately yesterday was terrible and i vow never to return.

We had reserved a table as in the past this place got very busy for dinner. The staff were initially very polite and seated us quickly and gave us the menu. Without giving us any time to look through the menu one waitress came to take our order and when we sent him away another female came immediately after as if they wanted to get rid of us asap for the table.

We ordered three things on the menu - which would have been more than enough for three but the female waitress pushed snd pushed for us to order another dish. When we looked through the menu for the 4th dish, the female waitress continuous rattled off random items depending on the page we flicked to. We had to send her away as well as we felt like our brains were to explode ( not a nice feeling when you are looking to relax and enjoy a dinner out), we eventually ordered our 4th dish probably 2 min before our 1st orders came out.

When our 1st orders came out, we realised that the portion sizes were very large (about the only thing going for this place) and asked one of the waiters if its possible to cancel our last dish as it was obvious that we were not going to be able to finish it all. The waiter said he will check with the chef and cancel it if it hadnt been made. - this was actually only ~2 min after we had made the order. And 15 min later, he returns to tell us the dish was already made and then only 10min later it was served.... Chinese stirfries do not take 25min to make....

Its one thing for staff to try upsell, but another to upsell despite knowing that the customers are ordering wayyy too much.

Anyway- 1 star for the portion siZe. Taste was average and service terrible... My father is normally a very pleasant and polite person- and even he was anoyed...

Went with a group of 8 in March 2012. Restaurant was busy for a week night. Food and service were good value for money.

This restaurant has gone through some major changes by increasing the number of covers, however I don't think they have increased the kitchen size to suit the extra turnover. This has lead to long waiting times, 1 1/2 hours in our case.
This in turn has had a detrimental effect in the quality of the food, which is unfortunate, as the quality was supurb when they were coping with around 30 covers in their old premises.
They need to reoganise the operation to accomodate the increase of business promptly as customers will not wait this long to be served substandard food, especially when the standard was soo high before.
I was a regular there as it was fantastic value for money dining. I want to stay a regular, however, I will return when they have sorted the service side out, which for all concerned, must come sooner rather than later to allow this jewel to shine.

Lovely little place for the authentic Asian experience! Good value, with a lot to choose from and a chef willing to make it to suit.

I love Asian wok, my partner and I eat here at least once a week, I'm so addicted to their pad thai that I was craving it while I was actually IN Asia.
