Review The Buckhorn - Carterton

Chris Barrow
Wonderful warm welcome as we arrived, the staff were very attentive and looked after us well đź‘Ť The pan fried fish was delicious as was the chicken supreme. The death by chocolate looked great, but the chocolate sponge was a little dry and would have benefited from some cream. There's no choice of vegetarian dish for the main meal, so you would have to stick to starters. I did notice that you could have your choice of fillings for the burritos mains. Looked to be very popular with a number of tables pre-booked we were lucky getting there early that there was a table free for us. There is outside seating but the day we were there it was raining.

This place was recommended to us from The Matador Motel in Carterton. From the moment we entered through the door the service was impeccable. We ordered and shared an entree. We loved our meals ( thank you to the chefs). It's a lovely atmosphere with a Western theme (Cowboys and Indians). Highly recommend going here. We will return in the future. Thank you everyone at Buckthorn Bar &Grill.

A cow boy themed bar and grill with cheap healthy and tasty food. The service is good as is the beer and warm open fire with snow on the surrounding hills. The theme and gun collection is worth the visit

Love the pub grub! Excellent all around food experience. Reasonable prices for a decent size serve and high food standard. Friendly atmosphere. Can book a table or drop in.

Awesome pub and atmosphere. Shame the kitchen was closed last Sunday arvo but I guess it can't stay open all day and night. We will remember to get there earlier because the food is nice as. Had a awesome chicken salad there a month or so ago

I like this place. It is very cowboy decor. Food price, quantity, and staff are all friendly. I had fish of the day: two big pieces of pan fried fish, chips are very hot but a bit dry, salad is little but that's kiwi style. Next time I will try the dessert!

Booked for wedding anniversary meal. Had been before but this time the service was excellent and friendly, the meal & dessert reasonably priced & delicious. Will definitely go back not just for a special occasion

Can’t say enough nice things about this place. Staff are top tier. Friendly, attentive, just really good all rounders. Food is exactly what you’d expect, good portions, good flavours, simple home cooking style. Nice range of drinks. Colouring books for the kids, GF options for allergies, fun decor.

We've been wanting to try this place for a while now but have never been in Carterton around dinner time. Tonight we had to go & collect a Trade Me win so stopped here to have dinner before going back over the hill. The decor and background music were just right. The fire was roaring. The staff were very friendly and the service prompt. We shared a rather large garlic bread to begin with; I then had the marinated fish entree which was superb. Mains were the rib eye and the pork chops (all as shown). The food was well prepared and I have no complaints (it was not microwaved). The hubby reckoned the pepper sauce was very strong. It was ... but it didn't matter as the steak was cooked perfectly. We will be going back to try other things when we can ... especially the death by chocolate dessert!<br/><br/>Here's the hubby's 10 cents worth:<br/>"We have eyed this place up for a while now on jaunts thru the Wairarapa but only found ourselves available for dinner last night as the missus wanted to collect a TM purchase in Carterton.<br/> The restaurant has an awesome Western feel and is superbly fitted out. Background music was appropriate and at a well thought out volume. I checked out the Garden Bar out the back and this seemed very inviting, complete with cacti etc. This would rock in summer. We ordered a garlic bread and marinated fish for starters, and pork chops and rib eye steak with pepper sauce for mains. The mains were $26 and $28 respectively. The missus said her marinated fish was very good, and so were the mains, though quite basic. Think Cobb & Co and you're there, and that's not a bad thing. My rare steak was very rare, just how it should be, though the pepper 'sauce' was a let down. What I got was something the consistency of a thick paste that was smeared on the meat, as opposed to what most people would consider a sauce. I am a big pepper fan, however this was blindingly hot and even after being scraped off the meat the residue had a kick.  No room for dessert unfortunately, but we'll have that when we go back. And we will."

Came as a group and staff were very welcoming. Meals ordered and came out in good timing. Scallops as an entree came out served on rice and a family member said they were just average. Had Chicken Supreme as a main and tasted very nice. Children's meals very good but had to approach the bar and remind staff about the children's ice-creams. Was disappointed that staff did not come and ask if our group wanted desserts after our main meal. Free drink was offered for the birthday boy and lollies offered to the children afterwards. Overall a pleasant evening just a couple of disappointing things.

Sat in the room next to the outdoor garden... I booked the table with family members for my birthday dinner... I have to say the food was stunning, service was awesome... very friendly people.. The owner JK is a very lovely man and took a shining to my kids and took the time to keep them entertained and happy who are under 3 as well as an 8 year old running around in the garden... He came over when we first sat down and said hello etc... the guy who took our orders was very lovely also! Fully recommend The Buckhorn made us feel very welcomed! Will definitely return!

Sat in the room next to the outdoor garden. If weather was better would've preferred to sit out there.<br/>Service was ok, the owner was very friendly and two guests were below the age of 3 and were being entertained well.<br/>I didn't have high hopes when ordering my meal but was very pleasantly surprised to have had the best Surf and Turf I've ever eaten! Just amazing.<br/>Will most certainly return.

Shocking meal, left before the hour after owners were rude to our children. Buckhorn website is misleading, families (children) not welcome. Feel very ripped off, $300 for an incomplete meal that was bland.

Good ambiance. Pity most of the food is done in a microwave. For the prices charged I would have expected the food to have been freshly cooked at the time.

Food was good and value for money. Great service though had to ask for water for the table - necessary when drinking wine. Would've been nice if the fire was going in June. But overall a good experience.
